I read an article in The Daily Telegraph the other day, it was dated the 30th April and the author, Henry Winter had a few things to say about our frailties.

At the time of the article being written we had played ten games since the massive loss at Wembley, we had also been knocked out of both the FA Cup and Champions League. It was a horrid time for all Arsenal fans. On top of that, we had won just eight points from a possible twenty-one in the Premier League.

This is basically what the author had to say with snippets quoted from the paper.

β€˜Arsenal’s intelligent manager must comprehend the team will mature into a trophy-winning force only if, individually and collectively, they begin to take responsibility.’

‘Take the 89th minute at Wembley. Both Arsenal players were culpable but Koscielny should really have responded in the assertive manner of a previous, far more illustrious wearer of the red No 6 shirt’.

‘Tony Adams would have smashed the ball clear, and anybody in the way, rather than wait expectantly for the keeper’.

‘Arsenal are a team of talented souls hampered by a failure to take responsibility as danger unfolds or, when things go wrong, accept responsibility’.

Henry Winter then went on to talk about Emmanuel Eboue’s rash penalty-bringing challenge on Liverpool’s Lucas at the Emirates and how no-one in his view shouldered the blame. He suggests that Wenger needs to take responsibility himself and stop complaining about decisions against us.

‘As has been repeatedly highlighted since Wembley, Wenger’s body language has hardly radiated confidence. He looks a man on the edge, not a man in control. That’s a bad image for his players to see’.

Sir Alex Ferguson observed that β€œthe personality of a manager is the most important thing at a football club’.

β€˜That personality can inspire the players to be better’’. said Fergie.

Fergie was not referring to Wenger allegedly, which is possibly a good thing seeing as we have just played them off the park to win earn three points.

Winter suggests that the β€˜constant clamour for a revolution at Arsenal, for the team to be dismantled and rebuilt should be ignored’

‘Arsenal need a tweak in Wenger’s mind-set, instructing his players in the importance of taking responsibility’.

‘Wenger also needs to recruit a couple of established winners, natural leaders, to instill some backbone into the team so they did not bend and break under late-season pressure’.

This is where you and I will all agree, he goes on to say we just need a few tweaks in our side, we need tough characters like Vieira and Adams, not whimps like Denilson and Eboue.

One of the players he suggests we would benefit from signing is Scott Parker – well a few of us agree with him there don’t we but as we said yesterday, he is more likely to end up down the road from us.

Then he talks about the others we should cut free this summer –

EbouΓ©, Nicklas Bendtner, Tomas Rosicky, Manuel Almunia and Denilson are listed, funny how his list is nearly the same as most fans list.

Then, go get a few players who are up for the fight, up for games like we have on Sunday – up for the trips to the north of England in the middle of Winter and bring home 3 points, that’s what we need.

Finally, Henry Winter makes one last remark, and that is about Cesc Fabregas. Should he and Arsenal decide he will go this summer, Arsene Wenger must hand the armband to a real leader.

But he has to buy one firstΒ

I kind of got the impression from that article that Henry Winter thinks we are a bit soft mentally, maybe he is right too. If we were a stronger side we wouldn’t have let the Wembley debacle knock us back, we wouldn’t have gone on to have such a dreadful run of results would we? In fact the Wembley debacle probably wouldn’t have occurred.

Is he right, do we really have a proper leader in our camp who is ready to take the armband IF Cesc goes, or will Arsene Wenger have to buy one?

Maybe we will get our answer tomorrow when we face Stoke City…
