What has happened to Denilson, the once Brazilian Captain?

Not long ago we all read the ‘alleged’ comments made by our Brazilian. Most papers ran the story and the gist of what he said was, he’s a winner, he wants to win trophies and medals and feels that in order to do so, he needs to find himself a new club.

Anyway, since that all came out, everything has gone very quite. The papers haven’t said a lot, he has said no more and AFC.com, well they don’t say a lot about anything in any case, not until there is something definite to report. To be fair to them, they haven’t responded to any of the media speculation about who is leaving, other than Wenger saying that Nasri won’t be sold to the Mancs and he will do all he can to keep our captain.

Two clubs have been rumoured to be interested in our young Brazilian.

Seville have been reported to be keen to offer him a way out of our club and the price mentioned in the Daily Mirror is £8 Million – well, if we get that for him, I actually believe that is a very good deal.

For us I mean, not Seville…

Denílson Pereira Neves – joined us in 2006 for £3.4 Million!!

He was unproved and had little experience in club football! After he signed, Wenger described him as being described as “a little bit in between Tomáš Rosický and Gilberto”.  It’s quite clear the Gilberto comparison was down to him being Brazilian, but Rosicky, well surely that can only be that once upon a time Rosicky used to shoot from outside the penalty area. Denilson is one of a few in our side who remains confident to take a shot outside the area and credit to him; he has scored a few corkers.

Denilson had not only played for his country at every junior level, he also captained them along the way, ever since he was in the under 15 squad. In November 2006, he was called up for the first time to the Brazilian national side for a friendly match against Switzerland , ironically it was to be in place of his then Arsenal team mate Gilberto Silva who pulled out for personal reasons.

He didn’t make it off the bench sadly…

Anyway, he is Brazilian; we all thought we’d captured a pretty darn good player, didn’t we??

Like Nikki B, Denilson is still only 23 years old and he has many a year in front of him in football.

His Premier League debut came in December 2006 when he came off of the bench diruin a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United.
He scored his first goal in a Carling Cup match against Newcastle, helping to earn us a 2-0 victory in September 2007. He had a good game and later that month AFC announced that Denilson had signed a new contract. Another goal came for him against Sheffield United in the Carling Cup, his was the last goal in a 3-0 victory. A corkder from long range I believe.

He earned his first Premier League start in November 2007 and he had a pretty good game, late goals from Gallas and Rosicky securing our victory late on in the game. The ugly side to his game was shown in the Carling Cup quart-final, a game in which he saw red just before the end of extra time.

2008/09 season came and Denilson would get more playing time. We had lost Gilberto, Flamini and Hleb. During August of this season he started all of our matches and scored his first PL goal for our club in a 3-0 defeat of Newcastle at The Emirates. Most of his playing time was alongside Cesc Fabregas but also replaced the unfit Cesc Fabregas in the latter stages of 2008.

2009/10 season started well for Denilson, he blasted his first goal of the campaign from 25 yards out past Tim Howard in a 6-1 home victory.

A month later he signed a new five-year deal!

Then came his back injury keeping him out for two months. He came back to face Standard Liège on 23 November where he scored our second goal in a 2–0 victory, this was another goal scored from long range, it also marked the 100th game for Arsenal.
Denílson went on to score goals against Hull City, Everton, Stoke City and West Ham United. Six was his goal tally for that season, all from outside the area. He made 28 appearances that season, three of which were from the bench.

2010–11 saw the breakthrough of Jack Wilshere into the first team. We all knew this kid was very good but me personally, I never anticipated him playing as much as he did in his first season. Once he showed how good he truly was, how could any manager leave him out?

This coupled with Denilsons reported injuries meant we saw less of him during last season. Many fans were glad, he had been a victim of a lot of abuse in the blog world and the less he played the happier a large section of fans were. He started just six Premier League matches and featured 16 in total. Overall, he made 32 appearances in all competitions, 20 starts and 12 from the bench.

No doubt Denilson has realised his time is pretty much up with us, Wilshere is on the rise and with players like Lansbury, Coquelin and Frimpong waiting in the wings, his chances for first team football are more likely to lessen than increase.

He may have come out and said what is reported and a lot of what he is supposed to have said is true. It may also be that Wenger has told him that his chances have all but gone and he’s better off elsewhere, we will never know the truth.

One thing we do know though is our young Brazilian has gone from playing and captaining his country at all the youth levels, to a player who looks lost and low in confidence..

Has he been given a fair chance to prove his worth under Arsene Wenger or is he another player who has failed to make his chances count?

He’s not good enough, at least for the Premier League. He might be better off in a slower and less physical league. I never rated him, not even during 08-09, where he played game after game.

Morning all,
A smiling post rico I bet your giggling.
Like most of our players this year, they have not really played their best, supporters frustrations build up with losses and sometimes its accredited to certain players, often coincidence where those players get the blame, and it seems Denilson has been on the end of some fans abuse, my view is Denilson has not played well when he has played but it has to be said that the rest of the team bar a couple have also been very poor. I thought our defence has also been terrible and thought with a new centre back it would make a huge difference but when Vermin came back just the same, so really just bad play all round, If Denilson does finally find a new home I wish him well

We got the wrong Brazilian should of got Sandro, oh well maybe we will go and get Leandro Damaio before the spuds do, he must be some player to be leading the line for Brazil ahead of Pato, Fabiano, and Adriano…..I think hes only 21.

Totally agree Rico, and he doesn’t even try hard enough while tracking back, a sin for a defensive midfielder. He gets bullied out of possession ever so easily, makes accurate but only-sideway passes. Hardly ever makes a telling pass forward. If we get 8 mill for him, it would be quite unbelievable.

Many believe we need many new faces to inject a bit of enthusiasm, personally i think we have the nucleus of a very good team that can beat anyone on their day, but confidence and enthusiasm has been missing and one players mistake can bring a teams spirit down, I believe Wenger knows that, but supporters are not helping with scathing criticism, and now Wenger knows he has to be seen to be doing something. I honestly don’t think we are miles away from victory and i also believe wide spread changes will not guarantee trophies, we have what we need but they have to believe as a team, if we can find that solution we will be on our way.

I kinda agree with Steve. More than personnel, the culture at the club needs to be changed. I don’t know how that will happen by merely bringing in a few new faces, who again, in all likelihood, will be French/African, and just join the clique. Wenger needs to change this summer, more than anyone.

I still think he is a very good player. He is calm and hardly loses the ball. Was at fault for not tracking back a few times but generally a good player that allowed others to do the more dynamic stuff. It is a shame we started playing him in a DM position as I am sure that is not his best. I for one wish him well and hope that he goes on to have a good career.

I feel we need one CB, one CDM, and one striker to replace Bendtner. That should do in terms of squad strength. But they all need to be top class.

Yeah no more of these young Frenchies. And I would love a striker with some magic about him, someone who could score good individual goals you know, out of nothing.

Falcao anyone? 😛

Btw, we apparently did not score a single goal from outside the box in home league games last season. That says enough. I’m not even sure if we scored a single good long range goal in the whole campaign.

Maybe just a change of Captain may just change attitude, granted we will have new faces and new styles maybe bigger defenders and hopefully a defensive coach helping. let Cesc do what Cesc does and stop chasing referee’s, put that in the hands of a Vermaelen, or kosi even a new bloke, make the Captains job just a job and not just a pay rise.

I remember an interview with Cesc & Theo earlier in the season when they were asked who gees up the boys before they go into the tunnel for the start of a game. And they said ‘noone’ ! No one shouts a little, or motivates the players at all before they walk out of the dressing room! I don’t say that shouting is the only way one can get motivated, but this is strange to say the least!

Cesc’s reply was “We’re more European in that way”.

rico, you are probably right but i have always believed that the Captains armband should be worn by a defender, they see a lot more than a striker and can relay messages easier, can often have time to see the manager and take in his orders, you don’t need a captain up front you want a greedy bugger up there just thinking of one thing get that ffffing thing in. A solid disciplined defence needs a strong personality, someone that shouts an order and instinctively its carried out, an armband is not for show, its a respected piece of equipment, and when its used right it shows.

Denilson has played some really good games for us- when he first arrived against Spurs, a couple of years ago away to Portsmouth and last year away to Barca- the only midfielder who did-but these are islands in a sea of mediocrity. You cant say he hasnt had chances- but so what- he is a young player who could improve his impac ton a game. What I’d really like to see is a player who will stop feeling sorry for himself and wait for his chance and give it a real go and over come his internal demons-which lies at the root of his caution. If he thinks life will be rosy elsewhere he is badly mistaken. I believe he has the skills but is not blessed with great pace. So what nor is Fabregas. His situation is not totally unlike Arshavin- except Arshavin does not retreat into his shell when it does not work. Four or five top performances would turn the haters around.

Steve Palmer

Greg
Greg

Spot on goonerboy. He’s certainly not “crap”, but he’s short on confidence. Like Song was when he started out, but Song has shown the strength to overcome it. Having a barrage of abuse from the fans can’t help, and he gets that partly because he’s a subtle player, plays neat possession, nothing thrilling.

His blog reputation is for not tracking back and playing sideways passes – something that a couple of people already repeated above as though it was their own opinion – but blog reputations are bollocks frankly, as people spread ideas they read in someone else’s post after one poor game. He’s just not as bad as people like to say.

Maybe he’s not right for Arsenal in the current set-up. But it would have been good to see him win the fans over.

allezkev

I’ve only been on-line since Aug of last year, so my opinion of Denilson, and for that matter Diaby,Eboue and Song, were/are based on what i’ve seen on the pitch. I don’t rate the first 3 and think we can do better than Song, but he’s adequate for now. I’ve not been a fan of any of them for around 3 season’s, people may have different views and fair enough, but to me , none of them are the kind of players that win you honours on a consistant basis. We might get away with carrying a couple of them, but 4 is just too much. Simply not good enough in my opinion…

Come on, it’s ridiculous to imply that bloggers have trashed Denilson so readers like me have turned against him. I supported him whenever he was on the pitch. But I don’t think he offers unique to this team. We have better players in each of the three central midfield positions, and we need to replace him with a world class experienced midfielder.

allezkev
allezkev

Wath, i love a drop wine mate, luvly jubbly.

A, some people on here earlier were suggesting that critism of Denilson on blogs, had turned fans against him. I was just putting my point of view. I’m not an expert by any stretch of your imagination, but i think i’ve got a passing idea about a player. For example, when i first saw Nigel Winterburn, i liked him and he became one of my all time favourite players. When i first saw Denilson i simply couldn’t see what he offered. No pace, no good in the air, couldn’t tackle, didn’t shoot, couldn’t cross a ball, didn’t have an eye for a defence splitting pass, all he did was play ‘safe’ sideways passes…well pardon me if i don’t get excited by that…

allezkev
allezkev

I don’t expect players to come in and ‘rock your socks off’ straight away. But you look for something, anything that might have you saying to your mates that, ‘that was good’. Players develop at different rates, for every Wilshere there’ll be someone who’ll take more time. But you still look for that ‘something’ in their game, that they can bring to the team.

allezkev
allezkev

Wath haha.
Yeah i know what you mean, but for example Gilberto wasn’t exactly dynamic, and it took awhile for me to see his value, but eventually the penny dropped and i luved him. He developed into a great defensive m/f.
Denilson brings nothing to the table, not to me.
All the same i wish him well, wherever he goes…i just hope he hurries up and leaves

hello!
Give another chance to Denilson!
It’s a great player. When you lose, dump it on read the full fury because he’s little one and does not shine like the others. If someone makes 8 million purchase of a good deal. Little appreciated. Arsenal loses. Denilson, stay! You could launch a petition to get Denilson. NB to another.
AW can go to South America but all players, good and reasonable, the 1st and 2nd division teams are all referenced from Spain, Portugal and Italy. It will not discover anything. Or on the other hand, may find one or more players who do not play in teams but are referenced in these three countries. In addition to the scouts, newspapers, etc., are seen the matches in Argentina, Brazil, Libertadores, etc.. We know everything that goes on in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru …

Now, we have a typical Arsenal match in defense versus english strikers. Imagine Almunia in the goal, JD and Senderos central backs and if I’m a swiss I will be nervous…

hes the closest thing to paul scholes and he’ll get better..hes such a talent i dont think people actually realise what weve got in jack..like pearce..why does jack have to go u21..hes a senior member of the full squad its disrespectful to say take a step down..its like banfield picking him for our reserves lol..

Hi rico,
Sorry 🙂 Jeff Astle was a good center forward on the beginning of 70ths. I remember him at WBA, at least

You watching Britain’s Got Talent???
Yeah, as you said, an early breakthrough in the morning and our bowlers tails will be up.
If Cookie had taken that catch, i reckon we would have got among them. A couple of wickets and the Sri Lankans will be bricking it…

I’m not too worried, you just get days like today, when the radar is a bit off. Tomorrow Finn could blow them away.
Is that right about the weather, as my garden is gasping.

Allez, I’ve an idea of that game. Clearly in my mind is that goal by Jairzinho against Banks.
Brazil had a wonderful team in that world Cup.

allezkev

JM, that England team was probably a better side than the team that won in 1966. But somebody spiked Banks’ food/drink and he couldn’t play against Germany in a quarter-final game that England were leading 2-0 in before somehow conceding 3 goals to lose 3-2. The substitute goalkeeper was a guy called Peter Bonetti, and he had a nightmare.
I know i’m biased but i honestly believe that a Brazil vs England final in 1970 would have pitted the best two teams in the world, at that time, together. Brazil would probably still have won as they were a fantastic team, but it would have been a great final.

yes, was from chelsea…maybe the reason 🙂
Italy, Germany and Uruguay had also good teams.
