Arsenal’s campaign so far.

Looking at the league table, it’s hard to fight the slight feeling of disappointment. I don’t mean that we sit currently at seventh, that’s not important yet as we are not even a quarter of the way into the season. I actually have very high aspirations for us this season, as well as beyond.

I am really just a bit bothered that we blew an opportunity to smack Chelsea at our place and maybe that we didn’t take three points from Sunderland. The latter I can excuse a little, considering all the changes to our squad from last season. How can we expect our new attacking players to be ready with only one match together (Cologne) in the whole pre-season.

Even without all the new players, this was a ridiculous schedule. We have to be better prepared if we want stronger starts each year and Stoke away is a war for every top team, usually with points being dropped, so we must accept its difficulty.

On the positive side, a battle at Man City saw us come away with a point, something which not many will do and the rest of the fixtures to date we have won as expected.

Satisfactory?

Most encouraging, is that we have not been outplayed by any opponent yet. Chelsea played very well, as did we but it was down to organisational mistakes on set pieces which was our downfall.

Maybe with Szczesny it could have been different, we won’t ever know but we can’t really complain about Mannone’s work overall – I would say sufficient for a third choice. Anyway, that’s the part that hurts a bit, a victory would have seen us right up close to the top sides around the 15 point area, and Chelsea wouldn’t be as far away as they seem. I’m sure they will add Falcao, so they could be hard to beat with their fortunate start.

Also, we must admit that our foolish sale of van Persie to a desperate Manchester United has saved them so far. Without his contributions and the typical help from referees, they would be closer to the bottom than the top. I think they are overrated and I fully expect us to finish ahead of them this season, even with van Persie. This will happen, as long as we don’t choke when we go head to head. We should go in expecting to win, and forgetting the recent past. We are an almost completely new team from just a couple of years ago, and we need to make a statement to them.

The overall signs and game play are very positive. We’ve all spoken about the new discipline on defence which has only slipped momentarily from Vermaelen. Most of us agree that despite what the media was trying to stir up about Giroud, he has played very well in many aspects, and looks like he will be good for us. Cazorla could end up the player of the year for the league if he’s properly recognized. If Silva’s been considered recently, Santi should have a great chance and Podolski is even better addition than I expected. He has an impact all over the pitch, such a hard worker with great attitude, especially on defence.

For a quick mention : Steve Bould is really making a difference. Gervinho is living up to his potential finally and Arteta – his game is as perfect as his hair. Our fullbacks as a pair, are the best in the league so far if you think about it. This, with Sagna coming back, leads to my next point. Just a mention of Jenkinson here, his season has been so impressive, England manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed that he is in his plans and our young defender has reportedly now chosen England, snubbing Finland, the country he represented at under 21 level. At least when he’s older he’ll be able to tell his kids he was so good he played for two countries….

The returning strength and depth, with Rosicky, Wilshere, Sagna, Szczesny, and maybe even Diaby. With just a little luck, and as long as we take it very slow with Jack, we have a lot to look forward to. Talking of Jack, he is scheduled for a ‘behind closed doors’ game on Wednesday against a Chelsea side as he continues his comeback. If all goes well, he is expected to be involved in the Capital One Cup fixture against Reading.

Let’s not forget our solid start to the Champions League either, that takes some pressure off as we go into the next few matches in that competition. In the Capital One Cup, I love to watch our future stars. If Theo walks away, maybe one of them will step up to help out.

As January approaches, the rumours will begin about signings. I don’t pay any attention to all the stories about all our available cash, we won’t spend much anyway. I hope we add depth up front, my choice would be Huntelaar and he would not be expensive because contract is running down. Although he has held talks with his current club, no agreement has been made so no doubt, he will be available in January.

Word is he doesn’t like van Persie- which is a bonus, but most of all, he can do the job as well as almost anybody, regardless of the cost.

So, moving forward, my confidence is high and I hope our players feel the same way.
