Morning all.

Well that was a tricky encounter and we made hard work of that match against Crystal Palace, but hard work was required and that’s just what the players put in. A lot of it.

It was funny old game, the returning Mathieu Flamini had to go off ย very soon after we kicked off with what looked like a groin injury, Mikel Arteta, having put us a goal up through a penalty, also went off but this wasn’t by choice. Well, actually it was, referee Chris Foy’s choice though! As soon as the incident took place I thought ‘he’s off’ as Chamakh looked like he could go through on goal but with the benefit of a replay, the decision looked harsh. Not only did we have other players who could have easily cut across to prevent Chamakh from scoring, it also looked like Chamakh actually made the first push.

Will Arsene Wenger decide to appeal? I don’t know of course and with the penalty being just the one match ban, he may very well not. We know the FA would love to award an extra game to Arteta’s ban for a ‘frivolous appeal’, even though it clearly wouldn’t be.

Talking of decisions that didn’t go our way, Serge Gnabry, who had come on for Flamini, was brought down on the edge of the penalty area. On another day, with a different set of officials, a penalty could have easily been awarded instead of a free-kick but it was the latter and we couldn’t make it count.

Shortly after half-time, the same player burst into the penalty area and was wiped out byย Adlene Guedioura. No doubts this time and up stepped Mikel Arteta to fire home. Finally, we had broken the deadlock.

I loved reading this:

On BT Sport, former referee Mark Halsey says he would only have given a yellow for the challenge, while Michael Owen, a card-carrying member of the strikers’ union, says Foy made the correct decision.

So we were down to ten men after the sending off of our captain and we only had a one goal advantage with twenty five minutes of the game left..

(Arsene Wenger made a change, bringing on Jack Wilshere for Santi Cazorla and the Englishman didn’t disappoint did he? Neither did Nacho Monreal when he came on Serge Gnabry later in the game.)

The alarm clocks went off inside the Palace players and they certainly woke up and caused us a few problems, but not ones we couldn’t deal with.

Wojciech Szczesny, who was awarded the MOTM award after the game showed just how good he can be when he made two outstanding saves. The first was fromย Joel Ward and the big Pole got the slightest of touches on the ball but enough to deflect it onto the crossbar and out. The second shot, which came after the resulting corner, looked destined for the net from the boot of Jedinak but somehow, our keeper, at full stretch, manage to get a very strong hand on the ball to keep it out. Stunning.

As much as Palace huffed and puffed and gave their all to grab an equaliser, three minutes before time, we broke away down the left with Ramsey, Giroud made a run into the penalty area, the Welshman looked up, picked him out and the big man headed home.

Game over.

We were far from our best again, even with eleven on the pitch we struggled to break down a side who set-up to nullify our creative players and we have to find a way to get around that and fast.

Going down to ten didn’t help our cause in the second half but as it turns out, it didn’t help us lose points either and credit has to go to the players for digging in, working hard and grinding out a result.

I honestly don’t think we’d have done that a year ago…..

I’ll leave you to pick the bones out of the game….

Suggestion is that Mathieu Flamini could be sidelined for three weeks which is a huge blow ahead of a tough month for us. Chelsea and Liverpool at home over the next week and at the end of the month we travel to Old Trafford. Hopefully, he’ll be back in time for that one.

Bit of transfer gossip to finish with and according to The Mirror, weย are plotting a ยฃ7million January bid for West Brom midfield enforcer Youssouf Mulumbu.ย Arsene Wenger had the 26-year-old watchedย at Stoke a week agoย and was given glowing reports on his performance.

I doubt Arsene Wenger would need a scout to tell him what the player is like, he was part of a very good West Brom side which held us to a draw..

That’s your lot….
