Wenger wants Uruguay's Cavani!! 2-0 and we mucked it up – AGAIN!!!

Morning all,

Eleven minutes into the game and we got what we all hoped, an early goal. Walcott fired in a corner and Giroud headed home. simples!

The perfect start got better just over ten minutes later. Arteta pulled the ball back across the six-yard box and Podolski got ahead of the Fulham defender to poke the ball past Schwarzer.

Why couldn’t Dowd have ended the game their and done us all a favour?

Shocking defending yet again allowed Fulham to equalise just before the half an hour mark when from a corner, Berbatov was given a free header which he buried into the net.

Our heads seem to go down, we were struggling to win anything in the midfield and no doubt I wasn’t the only one fully expecting another goal soon, and not for us either. Five minutes before half-time, that goal came.

Berbatov was given far too much space down our left, he crossed into the box and Kacaniklic headed into bottom corner past the diving Vito Mannone.

John Arne Riise gave us all a scare just before the half-time whistle went, but thankfully his ball across the box failed to find a player in white.

Fulham sniffed a victory yesterday afternoon and they started the second half strongly.

Walcott fired a cross in from the right which was fractionally too high for Giroud and shortly after, the Englishman broke with the ball and drove on towards goal before firing a curling shot which just missed the target.

Francis Coquelin, who had not have a great time out then on the turf, was replaced by Aaron Ramsey just before the hour mark.

Fulham should have been down to ten men soon after when Steve Sidwell, who had been cautioned in the first half, upended Santi Cazorla 25 yards from goal, but was given a final warning by a very lenient referee Phil Dowd. No surprise eh!

Dowd had little choice but to award Fulham a penalty though when Ruiz robbed Arteta on the right side of the penalty area but our Spaniard then pulled the player back. Up stepped Berbatov who sent Mannone the wrong way. Moments later Mannone saved well to prevent Kacaniklic from making it 4-2.

Twenty minutes of the game left and we needed some of the spirit we saw in the League Cup, but would we get it?

Well we soon drew level through our big number 12. His first shot hit the far post and came out to Walcott who crossed the ball back into the box. There was Giroud, who made no mistake this time, to head past Schwarzer. 3-3.

Ruiz fired a shot goal bound but again, Mannone kept it out.

We were putting pressure on Fulhams goal but the away side were causing us problems on the break, and Koscienly had to make a outstanding tackle on Berbatov to prevent him from having a chance to get his third for the afternoon.

With 15 minutes left, Podolski, who again didn’t live up to his reputation, was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Giroud then had a chance to get his own hat-trick and would have done but for Schwarzer making a very good save.

Walcott, who appeared to not want to play for England be injured, was replaced by Andrey Arshavin. Giroud had another chance but his free header went wide and then in the final seconds of the game, Arshavin’s cross hit Sascha Riether on the arm and Dowd pointed to the spot. Tad harsh I thought but hey, we get them like that given against us.

When was our last penalty at The Emirates?? Answers on a postcard please!

Up stepped Arteta, which to be honest, surprised me. I thought Giroud would have taken the chance to walk off with the match ball, or even Cazorla would have taken the responsibly but no, it was our vice captain…

Anyway, you know the rest. The whistle went and another two points dropped after surrendering a two goal lead.

I’ll leave you all to chew the cud, all I will say is anyone who believes that we don’t need a midfield enforcer hasn’t watched us this season.

Mind you, I strongly suspect there is only one person out there who thinks that and we all know who that is…

The same man who said this after the game:

In the second half we gave absolutely everything and I have to give credit to the players, in the last three games what they have done physically is amazing.

Even at 3-2 down we didn’t give up and continued to go forward and we had the chances to win the game.

No wonder our players are going through what they are!!

How can any side get any credit for surrendering a two goal lead, twice?

Finally a rumour from the Sunday newspapers and that is Wenger wants to sign Uruguayan Edinson Cavani. The 25 year old striker who plays for Napoli is value around the £30 Million mark so I strongly suspect there is little truth to this story.

Anyway, he won’t stop us leaking goals and he won’t stop us losing the battle in midfield will he?

That’s it for another day…..

    Morning all…

esp – glad they are focussing on the board. I honestly believe that Wenger would welcome a change of ownership too…

  2. rico says:

Scott – ‘fair result’ shows just how rubbish we must have been…

If our level of play was equal to that of Fulham the club should be ashamed of themselves!

  3. Bendtnersgone says:

    Morning,
I can’t say anymore than you have about us losing a 2 goal lead twice. Appalling is about all I’ll add. As far as a new striker goes I’d ask what more our recently acquired front boys can do than score 3 between them. Whether Podolski was pants or not he still scored. Buying Cavani, which is another in a long list of ridiculous rumours, would solve nothing. Would he not also take time to adjust? You’re bang on that we need someone strong in midfield to emulate Paddy. I wouldn’t mind Fellaini. While we’re at it we need a left back we can rely on. Waft £15m under Everton’s noses for Baines. We got Mikel for £10m and they’re skint. The opposition quite rightly target our left hand side as the weak point. Time to address that problem.

  4. rico says:

I bet most wouldn’t mind paying what we have too right now if we had a squad of players to match that value and we played the kind of football we used to under Wenger

  5. rico says:

Bg, Fellaini is ready to leave Everton if they don’t qualify for the CL, he wants to play in the competition and knows he may have to move to do so.

I’m not so sure though, they have more chance of getting top 4 than we do right now….

  6. Bendtnersgone says:

Ahh, but should we progress to the knock out stage we can offer it to him in January. And he knows we always end up in the top four somehow. He would certainly help with that.

  7. rico says:

Good point there Bg, but then so could Manure and Chelsea…

I’d still rather a beast in midfield, one who would put the fear factor back in our side….

  8. Scott from Oz says:

I reckon Jack would have made a massive difference, but i really feel sorry for Arteta.
So many people are giving it to him,yet he has been sensational for us.
A week ago, plenty were saying he should’ve been made skipper, now he is shit.
This is all over the net guys, not on here….i promise!!

  9. Bendtnersgone says:

I’d be disappointed if us signing him had actually been a possibilty. But then Diaby is the second coming so we don’t really need him. He and Gibbs will be like new signings, honest.

  10. frednerk says:

We need a captain………………….we need to find and buy an english centre-half…under george we had Adams,Bould and Keown..
Foriegn players can’t get used to the intense pressure week in week out .
Wenger managed to get Sol from spurs..don’t tell me he was cheap.his the riches ex-pro I know.
At some stage the other team will have a bit of play..thats when you need a leader and captain.
We need a voice on the pitch.
We need someone to tell the ref thats was wrong..did you see that.
    We have no one.
We had Fab he tried to have a go..then pissed off
We had Robin he tried to have a go…then pissed off
We now have Jack he tried to have a go..got sent off
We need help for Jack.before he gets fed up.
George..the first thing he done was make a very young Tony Adams captain..he new that Tony was a winner and would do anything to win a game..even if it ment him playing shit
That will to win is what we need..
We have some very good players.
I like Kossy but has wenger made another big bollock-up by signing him instead of Cahill.

    What do you think

  11. Bendtnersgone says:

Agreed Scott, yesterday wasn’t his best but he’s impressed me this season and doesn’t deserve grief. I still think he should be captain. The armband has done Thomas no good at all.

  12. smudge says:

No point guys and gals talking about who we should or shouldn’t sign in January. Until The Board and Wenger are gone all expenditure would be futile 🙁

  13. smudge says:

    frednerk

All those problems have been created by the tight fisted Board (FFP my arse) and Mr Wenger. Until changes are made , nothing will change on the pitch. In fact I actually think we have some good players and a reasonable squad….thats the real frustration

  14. Scott from Oz says:

    BG,
Kozzer showed some great signs yesterday….he made a few sensational tackles in very, very dangerous situations.
Personally,i think we got that one right.
Then again, why the hell not have both??

  15. Bendtnersgone says:

I just feel Arteta knows what being captain of a prem is all about. Also, it seems to always be him on Arse.com saying all the captainy things. Where’s TV?

  16. rico says:

Scott – I don’t think Arteta deserves too much stick, he’s not a DM and shouldn’t be played there imho. Desperation measures due to Wengers failure to replace Song.

    He’s no spring chicken either,…

  17. tsGH says:

    morning all,

A painful but fair result imo.

    A very good analyses Rico.

The midfield display yesterday shows why we need to buy a DM if AW can not trust Eastmond, Yennaris or Frimps.

AW did something when we went 1 up which I never expected him to do. He swapped Le Coq and Arteta’s position. The pro was that MA08 was involved in the creation of the 2nd goal but on the other hand it proved my point on why I disagree with folks who think MA08 should play further up field. He does not have the speed to play in that position the same way Pirlo does not either so they are best played deeper behind a proper DM as he has done and we did last season.

As Dev has stated before Le Coq should either be cover for the FBs or be played on the right wing in a 4-4-2 as he was played when he was on loan with L’Orient. He is not a DM at all and even against Reading he was very poor in the first half.

$hitty should do us a favour by beating the scums.

  18. rico says:

smudge, depends is Wenger wakes up and grows a pair. if he could finally do that and bang Kroenke’s door down demanding money then anything could happen…

    However…

  19. tsGH says:

Scott I am with you on Kozzer.

I like the idea of Cavani on the RHS of a pure 4-3-3 formation but we dont play that so I can not see how he will track back in the 4-2-3-1 formation he plays.

I agree with Smudge on the formation. AW needs to changed that formation because Poldi and TW14 are lazy buggers who do not want to track back but neither are skillful enough to create chances on their own.

  20. rico says:

fred – I agree re cahill, we missed a huge trick there and had Wenger/SK not been so tight, we’d have got him but we ended up getting Merts instead…

  21. rico says:

Kos was much better yesterday, so much so he was hardly mentioned…

Who was at fault for letting Berbytoff have a free header?

  22. rico says:

    fred –

Thinking long and hard, no. The two who imho will be fighting it our for the deserved captains armband in a few years time will be Carl Jenkinson and Jack Wilshere…

    Maybe even Frimpong too

  23. rico says:

Yes Scott… is he playing for his Arsenal career or a move I wonder…

Funny how since RvP has gone, his head is up again…

  24. Scott from Oz says:

    Fred is right.
Watching the replay today, and the amount of clearing headers Giroud did was incredible, but he also tracked back throughout the game.
I am glad he is getting his dues.
Rico, maybe Arshavin does still have a future.
    He looks sharp.

  25. frednerk says:

    Kos is a good player,Tom is a good player.BFG is a good player,Bacri is a good player…………
as soon as you mention any player someone will say his a good player because of this and that
If a pub team over the marshes lost a 2-0 lead twice in a week, I can tell you this the manager would either be playing in the next game or be replaced

  26. rico says:

Tsgh – right now, any of those three would be a great addition although I haven’t a clue who Mertens is 😉

But, I have another thought, why not drop a league and go sign the hardest b*****d from the Championship, a player who is used to the English game….

  27. tsGH says:

Guys I diagree on Cahill. I blame Bolton for wanting £15M for him when in the end he went for £1m less than what we offered in August for him.

  28. rico says:

For all you Theo haters, the player is reported to have an injury to his buttocks…

See, you all say he’s a pain in the arse 😉

    You’ll miss him when he’s gone though…..

  29. rico says:

    Scott,

The way he is playing right now, let’s hope so. I changed my view on him (again 😉 ) when we played Reading. A year ago he wouldn’t have lasted 90 mins, let alone 120 and be there at the end to help us the 6th goal….

Tsgh – Had we offered £10m, I bet we’d have got him and he wanted to join us so I heard…

  30. frednerk says:

I was a bit taken back when he dropprd Carl..he improved every game..he loves arsenal and run through a brick wall for us,
he played 9 times at left back for charlton just before we bought him.
I just don’t get it wenger any more

  31. rico says:

Julio Cesar claims he met with Arsenal before taking the decision to link up with Queens Park Rangers.

The Brazilian goalkeeper arrived in the Premier League over the summer in a surprise switch from Inter Milan.

The UEFA Champions League winner has graced the very top of the game and was expected to join another title-chasing club after taking the decision to leave Italy.

He admits he could have made a move to the Emirates, but says he was enticed to Loftus Road as there is greater scope to fill a directorial role there once he hangs up his gloves.

Cesar told The Sunday People: “I accepted this proposal because I wanted to live in London.

“I have an amazing way of life here and I’m giving my family a great opportunity to grow up culturally.

“I talked with Arsenal in the last transfer window, and they were really happy about me playing for them, but at the last minute I moved to QPR.

  32. tsGH says:

But we offered 9m and they went to the media and lied that we offered £6m. After all we do for them with loans etc. I expected better from both Coyle and Gartside.

The thing is they do not even reject the bid but went public to say we have offered an insulting figure. And what is the guarantee he is better than the BFG. The chavs have worse defense than us and he can’t even go ahead of Ruiz who is less disciplined than Santos

  33. JW says:

    Good morning all,

When bould was appointed assistant manager we all thought our defensive troubles were over, Bouldy would turn the sieve we called a back-four into the footballing equivalent of the Great wall of China. Dream on!

Our defence has got worse! Vermaelen is not a full-back, he keeps getting pulled into the middle and leaves just as much space as Santos does and Santos is far more of a threat going forward.

Never mind £30 million on a striker, buy Baines, Gibbs is OK but far too prone to injury, Santos is a joke and I’ve said my piece on Vermaelen. While on the subject of full-backs, offer Sagna a five year contract and £150,000 a week, we just cannot afford to lose him now.

Poor old Podolski must be wondering what he has got himself into, he’s expected to cover for our p**s poor left backs, play out of position and score goals and even when he does score he gets slagged off and dragged off.

The calls for a mid-field enforcer are pointless, tackling has all but been refereed out of the game which is fast becoming a non-contact sport.

Two up and leak three goals at home to Fulham! P****d off? Me? You bet I am!!

  34. rico says:

Agree re the loans etc etc, and I too was surprised to hear Coyle saying what he did…

We will never know now, but I bet he’s quicker than Merts 😉

  35. rico says:

This could explain Arshavin’s weight problem 🙂

Millionaire footballer Andrey Arshavin collects McDonald’s discount vouchers to buy his family cheap meals at the famous burger joint.

The Russian midfielder trousers £80,000-a-week, but instead of lavishing expensive meals at posh restaurants, Arshavin prefers the cheap and cheerful option at the Golden Arches.

Arshavin is a regular at the chain’s restaurant in Hampstead, north London, where he has been taking his family on regular outings.

One stunned worker told The Sun: ‘None of us can believe it when we see Andrey in here with his family.

‘He’s a regular, so collects the £1.99 meal deal vouchers to cut down on the total when they’re in. He could easily afford to eat anywhere in town.

‘But he says he loves the taste of our food and recognises it’s cheap for a full family.’

The fish meal is almost 400 calories on its own and nearly 1,000 calories when he adds his fries and drink.

  36. frednerk says:

Everyone at the arsenal knows wenger is a control freak…wenger knows what players he should buy and what positions..wenger is no mug..but somehow he seems to bollock it up nearly every time.
We keep reading about these players were on the verge
The goalkeeper(QPR) the striker(Everton)..why not sign someone else if we need that type of player.

  37. rico says:

    JW –

I share your anger and totally agree re signing a striker. Yes, we need a goal scorer but we bigger problems to address right now.

We can’t defend for toffee right now and as much as I never wish injury to anyone (well, normally) I really hope Defoe picks up an injury later because he is going to cause our defence all sorts of problems next weekend…

  38. rico says:

    So am I Tsgh …..

fred – same thing went through my mind, and those two would have made a difference, especially Cesar..

  39. JW says:

So Andrei Arshavin goes to MacDonalds…Shock horror! Have any of you tried taking your kid, for a nice healthy meal in a posh restaurant? The kids want to go where their mates go, it’s fashionable for them to eat crap food in noisy burger bars and if you’re going there anyway why not collect the cheap deal vouchers?

  40. tsGH says:

Those keen on tactics. The link below is a must read. ANd EPL agree on my assertion on what SC19 does for the team. Nothing defensively. Look at the 3rd diagram and see why we have lost the matches we have by having the opponents DM dictate play whilst the occupy our midfield and make us toothless.

Santi is a great player but has offered us nothing since he has been with us. Unfair maybe but that I will stand on. Compare his role and effect with what Oscar does for chelski and tell me who is better.

  41. JW says:

    tsGH,

Good morning my friend, I ducked out of the racing as it was p*****g down but I hear that it went well although my neighbour, who is as old as me and should know better, fell into the beck while helping to recover some ducks stuck in the reeds. 🙂

  42. NashuaGunners says:

    Good Morning Rico and All.

@tsGH, you cant compared Mazerati and BMW. How much Oscar cost Chelsea and how much SC19 cost Arsenal? If you want talented or gifted player, you have to pay. We are always in the basement bargain looking for cheap, then improve them and, sell them off.

  43. NashuaGunners says:

@jw, men of our ages would careless whether we have Vauxhall or BMW, as long as it takes us to point ‘A’ and point ‘B’. But, if you want the job done you bring in the right re-enforcement that are deem necessary to take us forward.

  44. NashuaGunners says:

Hi Kev, but don’t get your hopes too high. We being there before and it will never be the last.

Besides the deadwoods, who are we going to sell to makeup for the profit, keep the Board happy and SK smiling?

  45. tsGH says:

Hey Sir Kev- AW thought the window opened in December so that does not bode well.

Ha ha BMW and Masereti well it depends if its an X5 or a 1 series.

I think in this case it is not the price but what he is being asked to do or is not doing. SC19 buy out clause was £45M so under usual conditions he would not have been within our price range. I just think SC19 is not a number 10 and the formation requires a DB10 or Kanu to play in that role. JW10 is not the answer nor is SC19.

A number 10 like Gullit or DB10 or a proper number 8 like Gazza will naturally sit near the defensive midfielder.

  46. emma says:

    Hi gunnersphere
Like i said a couple of days ago, we should concentrate on the cups and if we are lucky to get 4th place as that seems the only we have being after for the last 7 years we should count it as bonus. The team is so imbalance that it will continue to tip over irrespective of whom we are up against.
AW gambling on the fitness of Gibbs/Diaby has really being a pain on the neck. Before the summer transfer window we were all shouting about signing vertoghen/capoue/m’vila etc but none materialized.
This team will continue to struggle irrespective of the team put in front of them. Our midfielders don’t simultaneously press the ball high up the field. The left hand side is so imbalance. If Arteta gets sidelined by injury do we have someone capable enough to step into his shoes when that time come? Will AW change into a 2 prong attack(Giroud/Podi)? Will he play SC19 through the left hand side of attack?
Poldi is so ineffective through the left. SC19 playing the CAM doesnt arrive on the box on time and it will take him 6month or a season to get used to it. Can we afford the luxury to wait that long?
Gervinho is very effective when played through the LHS of the attack as well as Arshavin.
Team will come good eventually but AW needs to ring the changes. The sooner the better, otherwise we are looking at the 2nd half of the season for this team to peak 🙁

  47. tsGH says:

Who mentioned on here that most of the issues seem to be due to the team playing on small pitches during training?

Looking at the team play recently I have to agree.

  48. allezkev says:

Hi Nasher. Just having a snooze, dreaming about Arsenal’s inactivity in the January Window…

Hiya Ginge, give me a Ford Granada, what a lovely car that was…

  49. Joaquim Moreira says:

I had written in a previous post a few days ago, most of the statements emma.
I agree with what was written.
Cavanni? He’s a good player, but I think that is already predict the exit of TW.
January market is a bit ungrateful. It’s difficult buy someone able to play in CL; most of players are not free. The sud-american market it’s a good bet. Also, we can make contacts and contracts for the next season

  50. rico says:

Tsgh – did you see the article about Suarez? If Liverpool didn’t have his goals, they’d be bottom of the PL with 2 points

  51. JW says:

    Hi Rico,

Where would we have been last season without the Little Dutch Boy’s goals? and where will we be this season without them?

  52. allezkev says:

Relax everyone, Diaby & Gervinho will soon be back.

Hi Rico, just been reading Untold Arsenal, it’s like LG even on there.
God, we are in the shit.

I know it’s a long shot, but we so need to beat the Scum next weekend.

  53. tsGH says:

    No I didn’t Rico.

JW I think last season any decent striker would have scored with the midfield we had. This year nobody wants to play where they are told to. Even Ox is not happy playing on the wings.

Gerv works hard for the team even if his final ball is not good. And we have really missed him with his pace. If TR07 comes back as good as he was in the Euros we will be ok.

  54. Micko says:

Lets be honest here, if you turned up for work to find your Boss wearing a sleeping bag would you take him seriously ? Me neither.

  55. allezkev says:

Nuri Sahin would have been just fine for us Rico.

But Mr Sahin can thank the intervention of that fine young tosser Jose Mourinho.
And maybe the greed of his agent?

  56. allezkev says:

    Saints preserve us, it’s Mick.

What’s wrong with a sleeping bag?
All the top european managers have one….

    Except Jose.

  57. vida says:

    hey everyone,
Have EPL teams forgot to how to defend from corners. it seems like a lot of goal are flying n from corners.

  58. allezkev says:

Tbh Rico, I thought it was all to do with Arsenal wanting him on a permanant deal, and Mourinho only wanting him to leave on loan, but I could be wrong.
That has happened before, many times… 🙂

  59. rico says:

vida, chelsea and liverpool have also been guilty of slopping defending… maybe it’s catching 😉

You are more likely right Kev, I just read the red tops too much 🙂

  60. Micko says:

rico 11.51, how did we let Julio Cesar slip through the net after having talks with him, someone needs a good kicking !

Tsgh, ever wondered why Lada dealers are always situated at the top of hills.
Kev, remember those classic ‘reasons to be cheerful’ posts of yours, they were the days.

  61. rico says:

I suspect Almunia did the talking Micko, everything slipped through his hands….

But seriously, a real muck up there….

Popping off to eat, back shortly…

  62. Joaquim Moreira says:

9th -10th in the League Table.
What we want to do with a so poor performance? 3 games lost, only 3 wins in 11 games played,
WbA,WH, Everton, toots all are upper us.
Mancs and chelsea with 0 or 1 game lost…it’s the big difference

  63. tsGH says:

I am positive about next week. Even at our worse we are still Arsenal.

The scums are alleged to have a better squad than ours in the last 3 seasons but we finished above ‘arry on all occasions.

The Evertons have all their players available and are 4 points ahead but that is not impossible to beat. Remember everyman favourite manager ‘arry brown envelope was 10 points ahead of us last season and we still beat them to the CL stop.

    COYGsss

  64. rico says:

    love your optimism Tsgh…

if we play next weekend, like we are at the moment, we have to pray that the totts have an off day….

  65. rico says:

What is the point of some of our players going out on loan.

Benik Afobe was an un-used substitute as Bolton Wanderers drew with Blackpool

Conor Henderson was again not part of the Coventry City squad,

Daniel Boateng wasn’t involved for Oxford United.

Injury again denied Ryo participation in Wigan Athletic’s matchday squad.

Denilson‘s Sao Paulo face Gremio tonight, whilst Nicklas Bendtner was a second-half substitute as Juventus thrashed Pescara 6-1. Joel Campbell was not involved for Real Betis. Ju-Young Park made the bench for Celta Vigo but was un-used throughout their loss to Rayo Vallecano.

  66. Scott from Oz says:

Didn’t Cesar go to QPR because they offered him a gig after he retires??
That hardly constitutes a stuff up on our behalf guys.
    Morning all.

  67. Scott from Oz says:

Rico, the concern is that these guys are not deemed good enough to play for these clubs, yet are on our books.
    Some are young,but others aren’t.
Park was signed just to piss Lille off after they stuffed us around on Hazard,of that,i have no doubt.

  68. rico says:

Hi Scott, can’t believe Cesar is already thinking about life after footie, certainly not at Qpr 😉

They have a rich owner, no doubt they offered him more, or he wasn’t prepared to go head to head with Ches…

  69. rico says:

I’m not fussed about Park or Nik tbh Scott, nor Denilson.

Its the others, some who are deemed not far off our squad, gone to wrong clubs I think….

I am always optimistic when more than 1 person is scoring.
