Van Persie boost, Wenger only looking short term……

Spot On Arsene, let’s stop thinking about the end of the season and whether we can win the league or not, whether we can win any of the cup competitions or not or indeed whether we can even make it into the top four.

Let’s just focus on the next game, then the next and then the next – if we win on Sunday, let’s not believe that all is rosy either, it takes more than one win to get our season back on track and we haven’t won that game yet either and if we don’t start performing and players don’t start working for each other, themselves, the club and the red and white shirt, we won’t win on Sunday either.

Wenger:

What we are hopeful for and what we can achieve is to win our next game.

It is seven games played, we have had some difficult away games. I am convinced we have good potential, we have rebuilt the team and of course we were a bit disturbed at the start of the season for different reasons. But we just want to focus on short-term at the moment; we are not in a position to make long-term plans.

I’m not so sure all our away games were difficult though, well apart from Manchester United and they are always a difficult side to face, let alone playing them at Old Trafford with half a team out injured or suspended!

The rest though were winnable, we threw away the game at Blackburn, we failed to close down players at Shite Hart Lane to gift them a victory and as for Newcastle, we just didn’t appear up for it!

On Sunday the team need to be up for it, we need to start winning now, not in a few games time but now. If we are to make those steady steps up the league table things need to change and fast.

Suggestion is that the planned protest prior to the match will go ahead, well if it does, I hope it has the same effect on our players as it did on the Blackburn players when their fans made clear their views, as that’s the kind of spirit we need to be showing and we need Robin to lead us to victory….

Robin has been talking about his fitness, and this should give us all something to feel good about, he says he has never felt better!

I played 90 minutes in both international games, and I feel great, I feel so fit these days, I recover well, don’t have any pain and feel really good. I’m enjoying it, playing all the games, doing all the training sessions.

A couple of years ago, I had periods where I struggled to play two 90 minutes in a few days, but now I can do it, recover well, and for me it’s the best feeling for years.

Trust me Robin, that makes us fans feel the best we have about you for years….

I could be a cynic of course and wonder if he is saying this so Barcelona think he’s worth signing… 😉

Have a good day all, the boys are back tomorrow……

Two comments left by devilgunner last night, i bought them over…

    devilgunner says:

Although I do despise Myles Palmer to the depths of my emotional reservoir, he said something which is true. Wenger is trying to make Arsenal play like Barcelona with West Ham players. While this is true the reason may be one of the following.

Either he is trying to perfect the playing system until he has players like Wilshere, Frimpong, Oxo, Coquelin, Jenks, Song , TV, Mert, Gibbs, Ryo, Afobe ready to take on the mantel of the first team and play the way football should be played. In such I a case I raise my hat, bow my head and ask forgiveness from the big man. Barca themselves did this and spent 7 years without winning the league or any cup of note till their style was perfected.

Or else he is stubborn enough to continue to persevere with his philosophy to just prove a point. In which case I like others will tell him thanks for the memories but its time to move on.

Time will tell which reason is right.

    October 14, 2011 at 9:14 pm (Edit)

I will try to make this a bit more clearer…….Arsene wants to buy/develop 5 defensive midfielders who can play anywhere across the back four and the CM/DM postiions, while he tries to buy Advanced midfielders who can play anywhere along the attack, advance midfield and wings. In its essence this is a good philosophy since you have intelligent players all around the pitch who like to pass and dribble the ball and are confident in every position.

But, and for that a big BUT….he seems to have forgotten that you cannot send a duck to an eagle’s school. It will always remain a duck. For example AA, RVP, TR, FF,SN all are best in the hole. So here we see 5 players who play in the hole spread around the W formed attack. And that is simply like a committee who met to decide something (win the game) and discuss so much (pass the ball) that in the end they decide to do nothing (try to pass the ball to death and end up f****ng the move) when a simple direct decision (cross and shoot/head or shoot from a distance) would have proved more effective.

‘Wenger is trying to make Arsenal play like Barcelona with West Ham players.’

MP is not too far off the mark there…..

  3. marinello says:

I still feel that we still need 2 experienced central defenders in the mold of Cahill, to complement Vermaalen. Too many individual schoolboy defensive errors have cost us in games so far this season.
I also think that Miss Haversham (Pat Rice) needs to hang his training cones up, and someone like Bould or Keown come in, as they will give Arsene the defensive coaching know how that is lacking.

  4. Joaquim Moreira says:

    Good morning
    I’m watching the rugby
I’m focus on the team we have now.
and of course, in the next game

  5. goonster says:

Morning guys…play like barca with west ham players? Now that’s the quote of the year. Looking forward to tomorrow’s game though I fear for us. Sunderland have players who play the ball out of defense in a faster tempo than any other team we ve faced this season that is apart from manure. You guys remember how hoilett made sagna work for every ball? Sesegnon will do far better and the scary part is….we don’t have sagna! Oh well, am expecting a home win…3:1 to the good guys. COYGS!

  6. stevepalmer1 says:

    Morning all,
What makes you think we can win Sunday.
We have the wrong Manager we have the wrong shareholder owner we have brought the wrong players and have the worst training staff and we are languishing at the bottom of the table we have 7 pts out of 7 games and our fans are rebelling, and wer’e supposed to be a top club Ha Ha fantastic supporters ha ha

  7. marinello says:

    Hi Steve,
Its certainly a new experience for many Arsenal fans to see their team languishing near the relegation zone, but I don’t think that they have become a poor team over night. This has been coming for a while. The team lacks experience, and maybe a coach who when the neat quick inter passing doesn’t always work, or are unable to break down a defensive team, can tactically change things. I only see Arsene subsituting like for like. We have too many mediocre players like Djourau, Koselny, and what with many players always injured like Vermaalen and Diaby, the squad is lacking in a bit of experience older heads that have the ability to lift the younger players when things aren’t going right. When Ray Lewington was Physio, I don’t remember there being so many players out with recurring injuries.
The Board appear happy with top 4 finish, taking the money that comes with that, getting their end of year dividend. But, without qualifying for Champions League, the millions will not be there. They need to release the purse strings and go and buy some good defenders like Samba and Cahill, and not make derisory offers of £10m. Arsene’s history of buying good defenders is not good, look at Senderos, the cart horse russian, Stepanov, etc.
Let’s see where we are in January, and whether the Board are forced, due to position in league, growing injuries etc to spend big on Cahill and Samba.

  8. stevepalmer1 says:

Good points Marinello, supporters were calling for more experience prior to the season starting Mertsackers name was mentioned on this blog nearly everyday, benny and Arteta and santos are all experienced professionals with mert playing in quite a difficult league benny and Art both with emense experience with the premier league Wenger made as you say a low offer for Cahill knowing he will go for free at the end of the season there wasn’t a rush of clubs to snap his services up and at that time we wasn’t aware of toms problems or wilsheres come to that, in my mind Wenger did a lot more than i was expecting and i had hoped that Cesc may of stayed, looking back i think wenger made some sound transactions and without the injuries and early suspensions i have no doubts we wouldn’t be where we are, a pocket of supporters are doing their best to get Wenger out and are trying as hard as posible to gain support but as our players start to recover Thomas in a fortnight may just be the tonic this team needs to start the move up , i definitly am not listening to the negative press and negative support and i believe wenger will turn our fortunes round.

  9. devilgunner says:

Good afternoon Rico, guys and chicks.

Thanks for transferring my quotes from yesterday. That was very nice of you.

At the moment I am not well. Still weak and practically its all day in the bed. I hate it but there is nothing I can do. And its off to the bed again so that I can get a bit of strength.

Hope to see you again when I wake up. I feel like I have been whacked by Mike Tyson…..exept that I did not get paid a couple of millions for it

  10. marinello says:

    Hi Devil Gunner,
Try and have some chicken soup, its supposed to contain healing qualities that have worked for many years, especially with things like flu.
Hope you start feeling better soon, what better a tonic than Arsenal beating Sunderland.
    Take care now.
    Marinello

  11. rico says:

    Hi Steve

Just because we all have different views, different opinions on who we would like to see in and around our club, it doesn’t mean we don’t support them and want them to win.

It doesn’t mean that prior to every game and right through until the final whistle I/we won’t be supporting them…

Oh, and if we can’t win tomorrow, it shows that most of the criticism that is around isn’t far off the mark!

  12. rico says:

9jagun – we all want to see Park, he’s overdue a game

Hi goonster and devilgunner, you are welcome, two good comments that would other wise been missed devil…

  13. marinello says:

    Hi Rico,
I agree, freedom of speech and each person (and fan) is entitled to their point of view.
The Board has to stand up and accept responsibility as well as the Manager. Arsene has created fantastic things over the years and the football played has at times been out of this world. But there comes a time when Arsene has to ask himself that soul searching question, “Can I make a difference anymore?” The Board will never ask him to step down, they have always said that. I think he needs a good strong No2, like Dalglish has in Steve Clark, someone who will question him on things. I never see Pat Rice move off the bench, in fact I think he has a specially adapted car that enables the bench and him to be winched through the sun roof and into the car…..
We all want to see success at Arsenal and see the team lifting a few trophies, and I think that with a few canny additions in defence, (no, not more midfield players Arsene), and another keeper to support Czesny, and more bite in the tackle, and a bit more passion to get the ball back when its lost, the team will staer moving up the league.

  14. rico says:

sorry to hear you are still poorly devilgunner, as marinello says, a good win tomorrow could get you back on your feet soon 😉

  15. rico says:

    Hi marinello

you and me both, if fans want to think that everything is fine at our club then so be it, but sitting 15th in the league tells the truth.

It’s the board i would like to see out, and then an owner who has OUR clubs interests at heart and is not just focussed on making the club debt free, not to the detriment of the squad…

Arsene, well if he is just the puppet for a board then a more dynamic owner might set him free to manager like he used to and not as he is doing now….

  16. marinello says:

    Hi Rico,
Its nice to hear the point of view from an Arsenal fan who does not show blind loyalty, very refreshing. Maybe one day if and when Arsene decides to call it a day, he’ll open the lid on what really goes on in the Boardroom with the mixture of Old Etonians and Russian Mafia, strange mix that one.
Would you like to see David Dein at the helm? That seemed a good pairing back in 96, when Wenger first arrived.
I’ll come on line when I get the time and thanks again for your honest forthright views.

  17. rico says:

I’m an AFC fan Marinello, not a board or manager fan 😉

That’s why i think the board would never sack Wenger, he’d cost too much, not only to terminate his contract, but to ‘keep him quiet’ – i think there is a lot he could tell….

  18. Joaquim Moreira says:

    yes, rico but wasn’t enought
Something is wrong. In a few comments, some of us saying we haven’t good central defenders. However all of them play in their own national teams. From which national team Samba is playing? Germany? France? Belgium? Swiss?

  19. rico says:

Training JM, it has to be the training, are we going through defensive training in units, with the whole team involved?

  20. goonster says:

Hi. Guys…..am not watching the liverpool/united game. Please update me. What’s the score? The scorers and other stuff. My girl won’t let me out. She wants to cuddle! Who cuddles on a Saturday? Arrgghh!

  21. marinello says:

    hi Joaquim,
Philpe Sendeross plays for Switzerland and he’s still a waste of skin, as is Bendtner. These players are just pumped up Championship players made to look good when playing with half decent players.
Having watched Samba playing in a mediocre team, and seen the strength, intelligence and passion and technical prowess, he’d be worth a punt. In the big games, we always get muscled out. With him alongside Thomas, it would tighten things up.

  22. goonster says:

1-1…oh man! I want manure to lose so bad. I hate those bastards more than I hate the spuddies. I ll bet they cheated to get a penalty to rescue a draw.

  23. goonster says:

On the balance of play who did you guys think deserved it? A part of me is scared shitless. I have a feeling fergusnose wanna go unbeaten before he quits and he might do it this year. He survived again today…..Invisibles anyone? I just don’t wanna see his poxy face smiling at the end of the season. That’s the only title we have and I don’t want any one equaling it…..especially not a lying, dirty cheating bastard like fergunose.

  24. marinello says:

Love him or hate him, Ferguson keeps building teams that win matches and ultimately trophies. We are so far behind Utd now in terms of our team and theirs, I bet they really look forward to playing us, bit like a training session for them, especially at set pieces and corners…..
Saying that, they can afford to buy the best, and attract the best youngsters.
I am so pleased that Gary Neville has packed it in, I can’t stand him, or his pathetic adolescent bum fluffed face…..
I can see them going through the season unbeaten. Even when their new keeper was making howlers, they still won the games.

  25. goonster says:

Spot on marinello….I weep for us. Where did all go wrong? One word. Wenger! He’s so infuriating it hurts. What other manager ll wait till the last day of the season to shore up a leaky defense. Same old same old. Like they ll say back there in legrove…..I don’t think we ever win anything with lescrooge in charge!

  26. goonster says:

That’s my fear marinello…..they might do it. The fucking bastard came so close last season..they lost…how many games was that? And worse still, they ve started well and they look like they really wanna do it…..I ll bet you the media ll crow for years to come….they might even say its a greater feat than ours. I just hope they don’t….I ll be devastated.

  27. marinello says:

    Hi Goonster,
If they beat Sunderland tomorrow, Arsene will be saying “we showed good movement, I think we were a little nervous first half and gave them too much respect, but overall my team have shown great spirit to come back very strongly after the narrow Spurs defeat.” But all it will do is paper over the cracks. I hate to say it, but its a bit like an illness, it may have to get worse before it gets better. Only then will the fat cat Hill Wood and the other Bored (sic) members, wake up and start putting pressure on Wenger to strengthen the team.
I am not convinced that Chamaka will make it, and get increasingly worried that Theo will be known as the “Nearly Man.” Will RVP run his contract down and leave on a free, or will the Board get greedy again and sell him before for £25m to City or Utd. I wouldn’t blame Robin for moving on, he’s been a good servant to the club, only now are we really seeing the best from a player who was a little injury prone.
I can’t understand selling Eboue for £3m, alright he was a bit erratic but very popular in the dressing room and was a good utility player who could play right back.
I want to see Aluminium sold, Bendtner sold, the little brazilian lightweight sold and the french defender sold. Trouble is who would pay, what we did for them?

  28. goonster says:

Good one marinello…..that’s what he ll say…..plus we showed character and were in control for long periods…..overall I think sunderland tired in the second half and we decided to take the “handbrake’ off…..hahahahaha what a schmoo.

  29. rico says:

I hate Fergie marinello, but, i absoultely admire the man for what he has done and continues to do – he never rests, even when his side wins the PL, he goes out and buys players to make sure they are stronger the following season.

Look at this summer just gone, players in early and fast…

That’s what Arsenal should be doing, not leaving it til deadline day….

  30. goonster says:

Robin ll sign marinello….don’t ask me how or why. I just have a feeling he will. He’s bergy all over again. He wants to win trophies but only in a arsenal shirt. I believe he ll stay. Bendtner can fuck off for all I care.

  31. rico says:

I don’t think we paid much for any of those players marinello, and if we sell Nik for 8million, we’d have made a profit i’m sure…

What we need to worry about though, Wenger has said that Niks career with is us not closed… 😮

  32. goonster says:

Hi rico….I will only take nicky pink boots back if wenger reverts to our normal classic 442 with robin playing off him. Anything less than that….he’s not welcome. Wenger ll only chuck him on the wings and make him look stupid all season long.

  33. rico says:

goonster – i am really hoping that wenger read the article in the daily mail, the one with Begy and Keown – Bergy made it clear that RvP is vey much like him, and not only because he’s born in Holland 😉

RvP isn’t a true centre forward, yes he scores goals but played in the right way, he not only score, he’d create so many, just as the great man did….

However, if RvP plays that kind of role in a 4-4-2, we need a more clinical finisher than Nik, maybe Drogba 😉

  34. Joaquim Moreira says:

yes, always with the help of the referees. Ferdinand must be sent off. The football rules are very clear except for some clubs like MU.
Bendtner is the reference of Denmark squad now. Denmark will be again in European Cup this summer. Sendereos is a Swiss international. He is not a very good central back. The question is how optimize the players for together be integrate in the team. This is the mean question and not buy more players and players for replace others in a completely random way.

  35. marinello says:

    God help us….
I thought Denilsson cost about £6m, Koshelny 30 pence, Bendtner came through his Fathers PR company for free. I sometimes think that Niks Dad has something on Wenger, I cannot see for the life of me what Wenger sees in him, he’s no Crouch, has no first touch and talks himself up too much.
I just want to get them off the wage bill.
I really hope Robin does sign, he certainly appears to be Arsenal through and through.

  36. goonster says:

I hear ya rico but will wenger listens….noooooo! He only listens to himself….funny cause he seem to talk out of his ass most times. He’s so full of himself….can’t wait for him to leave.

  37. goonster says:

Marinello, beats me too but if played in his preferred role I think bendtner might cut it with us. He just needs to play regularly in the same position and not just chucked out on the wings. We do tend to forget he’s still just 23! He can’t lead the line, he can’t link up play so why play a 4231 when you have a player as deficient as bendtner. Let’s get back to 442 and maybe just maybe we ll see the real nicky. Cross those balls to him and let him attack them. We got a bunch of players now who can cross the ball well.

  38. rico says:

We need to forget what goes on at the top, anything can happen guys, we just need to satrt winning, slowly get up the table and see….

  39. mog says:

rico i think arsene has seen the article in the daily mail.

arsene wengers reply to bergkamps suggestion that van persie should change position.
(the gunning hawk) its in news nows top stories, have not read it so do’nt know what he said.
    probobly i know best.

  40. rico says:

JM, if we can’t win everything in englan, i always hope man utd do, and that’s because of the way they go about their business….

Oh, and I don’t like Fergie, I don’t like Man utd, but, left only to football, they deserves all they get and, I hate the other top sides more than them….

  41. goonster says:

Rico we can on dream…..the guys up top ain’t as erratic as us…come on we ll be lucky to finish in the top 4.

  42. goonster says:

I hate manure rico wish they all fall down and die…..fergie first. That lying no good dirty price of a manager. I ll never wish them well. Fucking bastards.

  43. rico says:

    On van Persie, Wenger said:

[Dennis Bergkamp believes Robin van Persie is playing in a wrong position?] Of course [I spoke with Robin about his position], it’s on the football pitch.

On the right, on the left, up front, behind the strikers, he can play everywhere, it’s as simple as that.

What is more suited to the team and adjusted to the qualities of the other players, it’s the best.

In this position he has scored 26 goals in 32 games so you cannot say he’s in a bad position because the numbers go against you.

But you have to be open-minded, he can play as well behind the striker or on the right or on the left.

When I bought him he played on the left, winger. At Feyenoord he was educated like that, you know, I put him central because he’s a quality player.

  44. rico says:

goonster, top 6 would be a miracle, right now… But, anything can change….

I can understand why you don’t like Fergie and Manure, but for football only, you can’t fault them or Fergies vision….

  45. rico says:

Well, my second team have just scored a 90th minute winner and that makes me happy – as i said yesterday, they too are 15th in their league – good omen, we’ll get a home victory tomorrow 😛

  46. EastSidePaul says:

Good afternoon all! I have been busy as of late doing things that aspiring Petrologists do!

I am looking forward to tomorrows match, Is TV back? Any chance of a 4-4-2 line up tomorrow?

  47. marinello says:

Has Dennis got his coaching badges yet? Be great to get him involved, with Keown or tony adams coaching the defence. When George Graham used to coach, he used to tie a rope, that attached to each of the defenders in training so that they were one unit, ie, Winterburn, Dixon, Adams etc, so that when they moved or pivoted, they all moved together. Now where’s that rope….

  48. mog says:

i do’nt really think you can question wengers transfer policy
    (profit and loss) qualiity maybe.
but thats usually defensive positions, i think if you take all the ins and outs while wengers been in charge it averages out hes only spent something like 1 million a season. some people will say thats why were 15th in the league now at least hes never spent 30 million on a player thats been total crap. i do’nt know for facted but is there any other team / manager could have done that and stopped in the prem let aloan top 4 for 14/15 years.

  49. goonster says:

Bergy is the assistant manager at ajax so he ll definitely must have gotten his badge. Boy, what I ll give to have him bould and keown back in the fold.

  50. rico says:

marinello – bergy has his badges, i’m sure…

mog – until a few seasons ago, i wouldn’t question wenger’s transfer policies but now, i think most fans question them…

not only who he buys, but as in the summer, the timing…

  51. mog says:

    marinello

pheraps tie that rope around some of the present defenders necks see if that gives them the kick up the arse they so badly need.

  52. rico says:

I’m off out for dinner tonight guys, so i have to check out the house for the night…

you all have a good evening and catch you all tomorrow, match day 😛

    Stay safe, nighty…..

  53. mog says:

not for a minuite am i surjesting the sun shines out of arsenes arse but i think some people would blame wenger for everything.
it car’nt all be down to one man there must loads of things we do’nt know about.

  54. marinello says:

See you later Rico, nice chatting, well typing really….
East Side Paul: is a Petrologist, the same as an Arsonist? Only joking….
With regards Wengers buying and selling policy, yeh he’s done the Board proud, buying Anelka, Henry, Cesc, Nasri, Overmarrs, Lundberg, Pires (who we let go too soon), Vierra, Petit, Adebyore and selling them on for good profits, but then swept under the carpet are the bad buys, Stepanovs, Chris Wreh, Sendeross, Reyas (13m, sold for 6m), Jefferies (the nob in the box).

  55. goonster says:

seems we might be getting gourcuff in january. The rumor story just won’t die. Hope we do though cause a part of me thinks jack wilshere won’t be seeing any action this season.

  56. EastSidePaul says:

Hey Goonster, guess who is super happy to hear about Gourcuff joining in Jan??! Where did you read about it?

    ME!

I agree with jack not playing at all this season, how many times have we seen this before.

  57. goonster says:

Hi ESP…its every where on the news. The player himself confirmed we inquired about his services on the last day of the TW. He has even issued a “come and get me plea”. Lequipe thinks he should be our star signing in january. I hope so.

  58. Joaquim Moreira says:

    January is in next year.
The success or failure of the season will be set up in January. From January, or we fight for something, or is likely to save the season with a dignified classification or the team starts to prepare for the coming season.

  59. goonster says:

Jm…we need to start fighting now…january is still a long way off. If we wait till january we ll be further behind than we are now..

  60. EastSidePaul says:

Your right the fight does start now, want to see Arsene dropping some elbows on the sideline tomorrow!

Any more news on Usmanov? Please say its going to happen….

  61. goonster says:

The yank won’t budge ESP….he knows he has a lot to lose. I hate that smug faced mouthace wearing bastard. Him and PHW.

  62. goonster says:

Yeah I know JM but while we wait the turds down the road ll only extend the gap between us. We need to start fighting now….from tomorrow we need to hit the ground running. We need to smash sunderland, trash stoke to build up momentum. Hopefully with TV and diaby coming back soon we should be stronger before the busy christmas period.

  63. goonster says:

I really hope we overhaul the spuds cause robin sagna TV theo won’t wanna play in the europa league…..add chesny to that list.

  64. stevepalmer1 says:

    Morning Gooners,
Sorry about yesterday i made a couple of comments and disapeared had other things on, same today i’m afraid, people are talking about our fragile defence and they have a point, but we know that Vermaelen will be back within the next month, but i have been running some of the games we have played this season and would just like to point out that we have been beaten from range quite a few times, too many in my opinion, i am reading that our No2 keeper is talking about finding another position and in all honesty i can’t blame him, prior to his injury i think he had shown a good spell of form Fabianski may not be everybodies cup of tea but the goalkeeping position could be one to cause problems later on. Czezsney has shown that he can be a a good shot stopper from short range but he has let quite a few in from outside the box, dont like to point out a players frailties but when a keeper calls you would expect him to gather it, also takes the pressure off of defenders under the cosh.I believe today will be a good test it will be a physicle game and we need to keep our passing crisp but controlled not giving the ball awayshould be paramount, i would like to think that we shall see the Ox and Ju Park maybe even Ryo before the final result. With top teams dropping points yesterday gives us a good chance to claw back a couple of points. Young Jenks will probably cover for Sagna and i wish him all the best, i would hope he doesn’t get to adventurous and keeps it simple, we need to start moveing and today should be where we start.catch you all later. Morning Steve,
Some very good observations there. Interesting about Czesny. We’ve never ever replaced Seaman in my eyes. But then when he was in goal he also had a back four that instinctively defended and worked as a unit, and had Vierra and Petit protecting them, (Dixons words, not mine).
Czesny is still young and most great keepers improve with age, but he needs maybe an experienced no2 to work with in training, who can help him improve on the weak parts of his game. Seaman had Bob Wilson as coach and the ex Leeds keeper whose name escapes me but looked like Herman Munster.
As you say, today, crisp passing, no giving silly balls away, and a bit of bite in the tackle. Hoping for 3 points and the start of the fight back.
