Tonight should be a walkover, Vermaelen signs but could do so much better off the pitch…..

Well, what a boost for every Arsenal yesterday when afc.com announced that Thomas Vermaelen signed a new long-term contract, now all we need is for van Persie, Walcott and Sagna to follow suit.

Robin van Persie however, feels that Thomas could do so much better, not on the football front though, he’s referring to his choice of motor vehicle.

Yep, Robin has told Thomas via twitter that he can now afford to buy a better car and he should ditch the one above…

How cruel eh 😉

Back to the good news and that is about Almunia, he could be staying with West Ham a bit longer which is good, the longer he stays there, the less likely it is that Wenger could be tempted to play him in a cup match..

On to tonight and this the travelling squad:

Wojciech Szczesny
Lukasz Fabianski
Carl Jenkinson
Andre Santos
Per Mertesacker
Laurent Koscielny
Johan Djourou
Tomas Rosicky
Mikel Arteta
Alex Song
Theo Walcott
Gervinho
Yossi Benayoun
Francis Coquelin
Andrey Arshavin
Aaron Ramsey
Robin van Persie
Marouane Chamakh

Ramsey returns, Gibbs is out injured and there is no place for Park or Chamberlain, which is a bit of a surprise, in fact I am beginning to wonder why Wenger signed Park. He scores for fun for his country but still no sign of a chance for his club……..

Loïc Rémy believes that everyone is expecting an easy home victory:

Everyone sees us beating Arsenal easily. We proved that we could respond in big games such as when we played Dortmund. We have the necessary capacity and quality to play such teams.

But Arsenal remain a team who can play extremely well and therefore we will be wary.

As Remy points out, they battered Dortmund so we are in for a tough night in Marseille.

Well, we have thought similar to that in the past and it’s bitten us on the butt, just look back at the Carling Cup final and other games last season that we all thought we’d win at a canter.

We didn’t win them though; in fact we struggled in many of them and that in my opinion that was a lot down to being complacent, too complacent.

Remy went on to add:

We must remain humble in relation to their situation.

The Champions League is an entirely different competition and Arsene Wenger’s men will have the desire to make amends.

He is right there, If Marseille think we are going to be a pushover, they need to rethink!

Ok, many may think they we don’t stand a cat in hells chance of going to France and coming back with anything from tonight’s game but why can’t we?

The pressure is off of us for this one fixture because we have already been written off, so the players can play without the tonne of bricks on their shoulders that so often seems present these days.

Loïc Rémy is a player that has been linked to us on many occasion, so no doubt all eyes will be on him, well after we have beaten his side tonight, maybe he’ll think about it…

Not that we want him now of course do we, he’s had the Marseille touch…. 😉

Have a good day all….

Still no Chamberlain? Why should Wenger continues playing Walcott when clearly he failed to deliver again and again in every matches we played this season?

I’m beginning to accept the fact that Walcott somehow doesn’t equipped with “football” brain like players such as Bale or even Adam Johnson. I thought Chamberlain is much suited to play in Walcott’s place nowadays.

C’mmon, drop the lad, Give him sometime to think about his performance. Yes, while Chamberlain not good enough to track back and defend but one thing for sure, he sure has this “football” brain when we’re on the attack.

Morning all

It wont be easy but there is no reason why we cant get something out of this game. i would start with Rosicky Arteta and Song in the middle and Gervinho and Walcott on the wings, Jenks on the RB and the rest pick them selfs.

We need to start with rosciky rico….ramsey ll only slow us down. My team ll be chesny jenko mert kozzer santos song arteta rosicky gervinho robin arshavin. This team should give marseille something to think about….then bring on theo to run them ragged in dying minutes of the encounter….1:3 to the good guys. With Robin scoring a brace. You heard it here first.

Good one rico….so what’s your prediction mama bear? Think we thump them. OM isn’t playing well at the moment. Saw them play this past weekend. Rosciky song and arteta should dominate the mid field. We just need to make the possession count. I ll play robin for only 60 minutes though.

I would not put the defensive cock up between Szczesny and Koscieny in the Carling Cup final or other Koscieny’s other ones as being down to complacency . Koscieny has a bad defensive record and usually plays a part in the our poor defending that we see so much of.
A lack of confidence is a more plausable reason for much of this – rather than as you suggest complacency.
I’m pleased about Vermaelen signing a new contract he does bring confidence to the defense that is lacking when Koscieny plays.
Vermaelen needs to stay fit now to justify his deal,we don’t see too much of him and Mertesacker and Koscieny together are always an accident waiting to happen.
I reckon that a draw is the most likely result tonight with hopefully no injuries to key players.

That was harsh adam….try playing in a new country with new team mates and that damned “high line”. I rate kozzer and I believe he ll come good eventually. Vidic wasn’t a hit in his first season was he? I saw a clip on john terry a few days back where he was given a torrid time by our own jose reyes. What most fans and pundits tend to forget is that in verm in his first season had a seasoned professional in gallas to partner him in defense….who did kozzer have? JD and squillaci? Please. This is the same guy who kept messi quiet at the emirates and for pete’s sake he’s not our first choice CB so get off his back and get behind the team.

Thanks DG….I just hate it when folks pick on new players. A whole lot of people wrote vermalin off before he even kicked a ball. He’s too short was the cry. Its appalling. Check out kozzer’s stats. He is amazing when intercepting. He’s good on the ball and can read the game. I remember a certain jaap stam turned around by kanu. The guy is in his second season and just 25! Rio ferdinand was called error prone in his time at west ham.

Then to make matters worse song ll bomb forward and expose the defense to quick counter attacks. Who can blame him when our manager thinks he should be playing just in front of the opposition’s 18 yard box.

Spot on TT in a well balanced team he ll shine like a million bucks. Remember when we had the whole team last season including theovanasrigas (damn I miss that lot) we went a few games without conceding a goal. And on transfers the great L’pool team of the 70’s and 80’s almost always bought one good player every year and kept the momentum going with players that where familiar with each other and always had a few old hands to steer the new guy’s and introduce them to the Liverpool way. That gave the team an enormous stability that helped them dominate for over a decade and a half. We on the other hand buy maybe 1 top player every 3 years on average and total dross between and youngsters nowhere ready for regular 1st team, neither physically or mentally.

Don’t understand why he signed Park if he’s not going to play him at all!
As for the Ox and Walcott, I agree with everyone else. If Cescand Wilshere were young enough but good enough to not be ignored, then why is he being stubborn about the Ox?

Micko
Micko

Don’t see no reason why we can’t go over there and win tonight, from what i’ve read they haven’t had a great start to their season either, beating dortmund probably being their highlight so far.
It is interesting to hear how other players see us now, spurs players were saying the same about us a couple of weeks back how they thought the gap had closed, now marseille are getting a bit cocky, we gotta get back to our old ways.
And in fairness that is a bit of a girlie car.

Mada

Rico, it’s a fair point, but when he insists on playing players so out of form, there is surely a better option? Unless he is trying to allow Walcott to play through the bad form, but then he’ll probably just get injured…

Wenger has shown faith in the Ox, he’s played a part in all competetions this sesason, I just think he’s being really careful with him, Ryo probably still needs more time before he’s ready for the premiership but the Park situation I can’t understand, he’s been scoring goals for fun for his country, he’s fully fit,he must be raring to go, what’s he gotta do to get a start, if he doesn’t make the CC team next week then something is awry.

morning all…i don’t think it will be quite the stroll in the park “everyone” (according to remy) thinks it will be, for om…but neither do i think we are going to show up and roll them. i’ll go for 1-1, which is a reasonable result. om may be poor in their league, but they have won both their european ties so far, and last season they gave man united arguably their toughest tie leading up to the final.

do the basics, winning our home ties and doing no worse than drawing away, and we should be fine…

oliver
oliver

we’ve won 3 of 4 league matches at home, but that may – or may not – be fools gold, as the three wins have come against bottom feeders swansea, bolton and sunderland…stoke will be much more formidable than any of those these, and will give us a more accurate idea of what we are…are we really building a formidable home record, or are we just beating up on struggling teams?

oliver
oliver

for ju, arsene implied a few weeks ago that he was having a bit of difficulty adapting…perhaps that spot of difficult has just been prolonged…or perhaps arsene only dropped chamakh for a game to get his attention…

i think this should be the last chance saloon for chamakh, but it probably isn’t. nothing at all personal against the guy, but we are coming up on a year or, welll…nothing…how long can we afford to wait for him to get his act together? especially when robin is our only consistent source of goals…

goonster
goonster

You re right there oliver about us only beating teams below us but I beg to disagree on stoke being a fair reflection on how good we are so far this season cause apart from the debacle at old toilet I think we played remarkably well. The spuds, geordie and Liverpool games were a bit harsh on us. A draw would have been a fair reflection. I even think we coulda gotten the three maximum points against the scoursers had frimpong not been sent off. Verm and kozzer shot carroll out for long spells. We did beat udinese at udine!

oliver
oliver

morning rico and gs…

rico, i think arsene implied the difficulties were more cultural than football-wise…

gs, have to disagree with you…even in many of our wins, we have not been convincing. i would not say we played particularly well against the mackems the weekend…we started great and dominated the second half, but right before/after we conceded we were all over the place, and cattermole really should have gotten them a second. colback also could have scored right before the whistle…

we were toothless against the scousers. i am not sure they would have scored against 11 men, but we created absolutely nothing that afternoon – i think frim had a shot from distance, but that was it…

nor can i say that we played well against swansea…arsh’s goal was gift-wrapped on a platter…and they had a great chance to equalize in stoppage time, with szcz on the deck, but they wasted it…

i give us credit for grinding out wins against teams we really should be beating regardless, but i cannot say we have looked good…we are pretty much a one-man band at the moment…we are getting next to nothing from the midfield or support strikers…imo, formation and players do not suit what we are doing. we are starting to get a lot of mileage out of our captain again, but it is coming at a cost, namely little to nothing from anyone else.

oliver
oliver

that was a good win at udine, and once they scored we took control and battered them…that was the best half of football we played this season…but we have not been really able to replicate it. we created several great chances that half…the second half against the mackems saw us dominate and then robin finally scored, but what did we really create before then?

don’t forget what happened after the spuds scored their second? did we respond? no, too many players went into hiding, and we didn’t create a significant chance for the rest of the game, despite having plenty of time to equlize again.

oliver

oliver

who knows…with miyaichi, perhaps it is recognition that there has to be a development period, that throwing him and asking him to save us is in nobody’s interests…again, let him prove he is ready to step up by playing well in the reserves…but don’t put starters minutes on him until he proves he can handle the reserve minutes…

oc has also disappeared as of late…i have a suspicion that arsene may have moved him out of the spotlight for his own protection. oc has a couple of excellent games, and just like that, theo needs to be dropped and people start talking about england call-ups…if arsene has moved him out of the first-team picture until the hyperbole dies down, then i applaud him (arsene) for it…like all our younger players, he has time to develop, should not be annointed our saviour, and should only be considered for england once he gets regular first team minutes and plays well. if this is what arsene is doing with him, it is absolutely the right thing imo…

Oliver I seriously don’t know what you want from a team that lost its two best player and a relatively experienced left back. Arteta song and ramsey are still getting to know each other. These are players that hadn’t had up 20 hours of football together. Am not sticking up for wenger here but you ve got to admit we ve played some really good football this season….blackburn first half, udinese second half and my favorite sunderland first twenty minutes. We ll only get better and credit must go to the manager for bringing out the best in them. I don’t know about you guys but I see a whole lot of positives each time we play…like Santos showing he’s not only good bombing forward but can also defend too. We have AOC,frompong and le coq showing the younger players the way forward. Am looking forward to the game tonight. Just can’t wait.COYGs.

gs, we may have new additions who need time to settle in, but we have plenty of other players who have been here quite a while…

i expect the team to play as a team, to create chances – not always convert – but create more than we do. i expect players other than robin to have a go at goal…i expect the team to recognize when to pass and when to shoot…i expect the team put in a decent cross at a rate better than one in every ten…i expect the team to score off a corner occasionally…

perhaps you are right – i do expect too much…but if that is true, i think it says more about the players and arsene than me…

i admire your optimism, but i won’t buy completely into it – i see too many flaws in our players, our makeup and how we play. i don’t think i am alone in this, either…

no disrespect intended, but i cannot possibly disagree more with the statment “credit must go to the manager for bringing out the best in them” we’re getting goals from robin, but sporadic performances from everyone else…that is not in any way bringing out the “best” in them…

Oliver, a couple of seasons ago you and I were complaining we weren’t winning ugly…now we do and its not good enough? Come on man we beat the mackems with a depleted side, what we couldn’t achieve last season with a better team. I ll take every win I get from now on till the team gels completely…..cause when they finally do. There ll be fireworks. we are presently missing our first choice CB, first choice RB, sold our first choice left back, we are also missing our player of the past season(wilshere) add to that we lost the best player in the world in his position and another gifted mid fielder in nasri! Dude we are not doing so bad. Imagine chelsea without terry, ivanovic, cole, lampard and malouda. Where do you think they ll be? Worse than where we are I tell you!

oliver
oliver

gs, it is all good…you see it as we are playing well yet not as good as we can because we are missing people/integrating new people…

i have been distinctly unimpressed with our overall form…i further see our root problems stemming from fundamental flaws in how we are structured, what our players are asked to do, and our collective squad mentality…your arguments have utterly failed to persuade me otherwise.

on the other hand, i fully accept that my arguments have completely failed to persuade you of how i see things…that is fine – we can both still support the team despite seeing it through different perspectives…

Interesting both of your points of view GS and Oliver, I probably slightly side with Olivwer on this that I do feel that there is something deeply wrong with our team (more than just a drop of form and new additions). For me it is more psychological and this stems back to the Birmingham match and the fact that for the last 4 odd seasons we have not had the ‘mental strength’ to compeete right to the end of the season.

However that is not to say that I don’t hope that you are right GS, I just feel that I don’t trust Wengers decisions and that we will be back under his leadership.

So Marseille match….score prediction anyone?

oliver

Some bloody pundit wrote us off before a ball was even kicked…said OM will turn us over 4:1 the little prick predicted. Wish I can see his face now….scummy little bastard. Come you fucking gunners…..Come the fuck on.

Sod the quality, 3 precious points is all that counts.
BFG throws his shirt into the Arsenal fans.
I think our Merts is becoming a bit of a crowd favourite.

Not one of the best games i have ever seen but the right result, Our luck is starting to change taken long enough, but lets hope it stays with us.Will we ever see our other 3 signings, or is there a problem with them.

You won’t have seen this on MotD last Sunday.
But at the end of the Sunderland game. BFG & Theo went to the middle of the pitch & walked around the centre circle applauding every side of the ground. It got a great response from us fans still in TheGrove. Then as they walked off Theo leaped onto big Merts back and got a piggy back off of the pitch. They were both laughing and so was all the fans. It showed a great spirit and that link, recently missing, between us and the players. Tonights result should go a long way to rebuilding that spirit.

I thought we would lead something this season, just the groupe at the moment, who knows what else later.

As for Oxo. His time will come Steve. And he will be a sensation. Now as JM said, as only JM can, the same score vs Stoke. COYG

Some simple maths…….

If AFC win their next game and Dortmund/Olympiakos get a draw, then whatever happens in the last two games Arsenal will still finish 1st
