As we enter another period of inaction, while F.A.s around the world boost their finances by putting on a whole host of pointless games, maybe it’s time to reflect on Arsenal’s recent change in fortunes.

Personally I’m still sunning myself in the glow of that fantastic performance and result at Stamford Bridge.

Before the Chelsea game many fans and pundits claimed that ‘This is the real test of where Arsenal stand this season’, and in truth, many of us expected the team to fail that test.

I kind of hoped for a draw, so that the teams unbeaten run continued, so a 5-3 win was beyond my wildest dreams. It was an emotional roller-coaster of a game.

After that fixture, I am sure that mentally the players were still coming down from the high of fighting back from 3 massive disappointments, hence the lacklustre display at home to Marseilles. Those 3 disappointments would have sunk some Arsenal teams of recent seasons, going 1-0 down initially, then conceding late in the 1st half to go 2-1 behind and finally failing to hold onto a 3-2 lead and going 3-3.

Chelsea could have taken advantage but tellingly they failed to do so and the New Arsenal had the strength and character to fight back again, to win a memorable match.

The influence of more experienced players in the squad cannot be ignored. They seem to be having a positive effect, dare I say the beginnings of what George Graham continually referred to as ‘resilience’…Β  That is the ability to suffer reverses during games but not to panic or let your head drop.

We cannot be sure but whatever our opinions might be concerning the likes of Mertesacker, Arteta, Benayoun and Santos on the football field, their influence inside the club, in the dressing room, on the training ground and how they encourage some of our less resilient team/squad members during games, is obviously having a positive effect.

The culmination of all the players hard work was the wonderful performance at Stamford Bridge, and the teams celebrations at the end, played out in front of the fantastic Arsenal away support, showed to me the influence and leadership of Robin Van Persie.

A big corner turned..!

Yes, there were plenty of holes that you could pick in that performance but if a 5-3 win at Stamford Bridge cannot enthuse you, then maybe nothing can…

Following the Marseilles anti-climax it was vital to get back into the groove, to win those bread & butter games that the Old Arsenal often slipped up in. West Brom are one of those bread & butter opponents, well coached and organised by Roy Hodgson. Dropping points to WBA would have rendered the Chelsea result as less important.

All the old doubts would have come rushing back had we lost.

Wenger rotated, giving Big Mert a breather and the New Arsenal just did an efficient job in brushing aside a resolute West Brom and picking up 3 points.

So the recovery and The Show, goes on….

Now we wait and hope and pray that all our players return fit for the two games a week programme up to the New Year.
