The Show goes on, now we sit and wait……

As we enter another period of inaction, while F.A.s around the world boost their finances by putting on a whole host of pointless games, maybe it’s time to reflect on Arsenal’s recent change in fortunes.

Personally I’m still sunning myself in the glow of that fantastic performance and result at Stamford Bridge.

Before the Chelsea game many fans and pundits claimed that ‘This is the real test of where Arsenal stand this season’, and in truth, many of us expected the team to fail that test.

I kind of hoped for a draw, so that the teams unbeaten run continued, so a 5-3 win was beyond my wildest dreams. It was an emotional roller-coaster of a game.

After that fixture, I am sure that mentally the players were still coming down from the high of fighting back from 3 massive disappointments, hence the lacklustre display at home to Marseilles. Those 3 disappointments would have sunk some Arsenal teams of recent seasons, going 1-0 down initially, then conceding late in the 1st half to go 2-1 behind and finally failing to hold onto a 3-2 lead and going 3-3.

Chelsea could have taken advantage but tellingly they failed to do so and the New Arsenal had the strength and character to fight back again, to win a memorable match.

The influence of more experienced players in the squad cannot be ignored. They seem to be having a positive effect, dare I say the beginnings of what George Graham continually referred to as ‘resilience’…Β  That is the ability to suffer reverses during games but not to panic or let your head drop.

We cannot be sure but whatever our opinions might be concerning the likes of Mertesacker, Arteta, Benayoun and Santos on the football field, their influence inside the club, in the dressing room, on the training ground and how they encourage some of our less resilient team/squad members during games, is obviously having a positive effect.

The culmination of all the players hard work was the wonderful performance at Stamford Bridge, and the teams celebrations at the end, played out in front of the fantastic Arsenal away support, showed to me the influence and leadership of Robin Van Persie.

A big corner turned..!

Yes, there were plenty of holes that you could pick in that performance but if a 5-3 win at Stamford Bridge cannot enthuse you, then maybe nothing can…

Following the Marseilles anti-climax it was vital to get back into the groove, to win those bread & butter games that the Old Arsenal often slipped up in. West Brom are one of those bread & butter opponents, well coached and organised by Roy Hodgson. Dropping points to WBA would have rendered the Chelsea result as less important.

All the old doubts would have come rushing back had we lost.

Wenger rotated, giving Big Mert a breather and the New Arsenal just did an efficient job in brushing aside a resolute West Brom and picking up 3 points.

So the recovery and The Show, goes on….

Now we wait and hope and pray that all our players return fit for the two games a week programme up to the New Year.

    Morning…..

Nice one AK, how long is it since we have had a ‘proper leader’ – have we finally got one again with RvP, he certainly seems to have the dressing room according to players and his on pitch performances are certainly not for questioning….

Norwich up next, another so called ‘bread and butter’ side, but they’ll be tricky…..

  2. potter says:

Still don’t think the corner has been turned ,but we may just have reached it. A few more results yet and we need to see the reaction from a poor result before we get ahead of ourselves.

  3. devilgunner says:

    Morning guys and chicks.

Good post and some inteligent points AK.

I agree that RVP is a good leader. However I think that TV05 is a better leader especially in tactics.

Having said that we are lucky that RVP is the charismatic type of leader (that means he leads you by the heart) while TV05 is the tactical leader on the pitch. He organizes the team.

In that case I was very happy that RVP scored first and then TV05 got the 2nd vs WBA….since that shows that both are leading the team in the right direction.

Maybe that was what was missing in the Fabregas era as a captain. Fabregas was the best player…..but was he an emotional or organizational leader. Or none of them?????

That is open to our opinion and how we view things.

    Morning Gooners.
    Morning Rico.
    Very interesting post on LG.
    Worth a peek.
Yes Rico, agree re: Robin & Norwich.
    Morning Potter, how are you?

  5. rico says:

hi potter – i think we have turned a corner but we still have a long way to go before i’m convinced. we are vulnerable on the left side of defence and we still lack creativity in some matches..

  6. allezkev says:

    Morning DG, thanks.
Tbh, Verm would have been my choice as skipper when Cesc left. But i’ve been pleasantly suprised at how well Robin is doing the job.

  7. potter says:

Morning all , thanks for asking I am fine, It is a good read on Le-Grove and shows how seriously we are addressing the fitness of the players. Makes a change to get an insight instead of the usual diet of smoke and mirrors that comes from the club.

  8. allezkev says:

I wonder how many Norwich players have left the club to join up with international squads???
They have a very intelligent manager, so we need to be carefull with this game.
Do you know how many of the squad that played against WBA will not be playing for international sides over thios period.
And how far from fitness is Diaby and Afobe anyone?

  9. allezkev says:

Thank you Lee, your appreciation makes my scribbling all worthwhile. πŸ˜‰
How was the early train this morning….? πŸ™

  10. stevepalmer1 says:

    Morning all,
    Good post AK,
Your points about our new players influence in the dressing room and the training ground, made me remember Eboue, i had read several times how his enthusiasm and jokes off the field made him a popular addition to the squad. Now Eboue has been shipped out I hear that Czezseney has become the joker in the pack, and i see that as a positive. As i watched Czez the other day, i noticed how his confidence which he has never been short of, had moved forward where he was directing the defensive line to who they should mark and where they should be, i was also suprised by how the experienced defenders responded without question, and i see that as a step forward. This young goalkeeper that at first i felt was out of his depths has realised that part of his job is to command his goal space, I still think he will make mistakes that will ultimatly hurt us but i feel that this is a big step forward, Also AK you mentioned the celebrations after the Chelsea game, good points you made there, the lads showed a comradery that will only grow, also that has got the supporters behind them as well, this team is on the way up and i believe they are going to suprise a lot of people, tip top post as Usual which is now expected.

  11. goonster says:

Potter what else do you want….we whupped sunderland whom we couldn’t with cesc and nashit, beat bolton and stoke easily. Then went to the bridge and shit on it. We ve turned the corner. The west brom game proved it. We are back baby! Morning good people and kev!….*whispering* cause kev is bad!

  12. rico says:

Just been reading the LG post, very interesting AK, the two Gary’s sound like really good guys and Ivan plays footie, well fancy that eh πŸ˜‰

  13. allezkev says:

Thank you Steve, you and Rico set the standard mate.
Yeah, there definately seems to be the beginnings of a togtherness in this group of players.
Robin might be the main-man but he isn’t a big-time Charlie, i still see him as part of the group.
The spirt of this squad is still evolving, but i’m more optimistic now, than i have been for 2 or 3 years.

  14. devilgunner says:

    Morning Goonster.

I am sorry but I beg to differ.

THE ONLY WAY THAT PROVES WE HAVE TURNED THE CORNER IS THE MOMENT WHEN WE LIFT A BLOODY CUP……yes even the Carling cup or FA cup. After all the great sides like Arsenal of the 30’s, Liverpool of the 70’s and 80’s, Manure of SAF have all started their dominance by winning the FA cup first. Then it went from there. Few have started with the league immediately. The moment when a cup is lifted all the pressure is lifted. Remember when Pearce missed that penalty in the WC???? it stayed with him till he banged one in and it was a decisive moment for him. All the tension came out and his roar was a sign that a ghost has been laid to rest.

Until this team wins a cup whatever it may be it will remain in the shadow of the Invincibles of 2004.

Even AW is not immune to that.

  15. goonster says:

Thanks lee…..hey WATH get ready to change your name amigo! Morning rico, boy are you looking mighty fine this morning. X factor?

  16. allezkev says:

Lee, i hate it when the clocks go back.
Mornings are just so shitty and evenings are non-existant.
Wonder if the time change had any effect on the M5 crash?

  17. allezkev says:

Rico, what a welcome change it is to see the club opening up.
In the past they’ve acted more like Freemason’s in terms of not be frank with us fans.
No wonder so many of us have scant respect for those running our club.
This change in policy is very welcome.

  18. goonster says:

Hey DG slow down there fella. We are still in 4 competitions ain’t we? Come on, chill out relax…go get a drink. We have indeed turned the corner and in january,We re getting granero and a marquee signing! You heard it here first.

  19. rico says:

Hi Steve, re Ches, I think all keepers will make mistakes, Renia, who many consider to be one of the worlds best made plenty at the weekend – like you, i had my concerns and only because he is very young and wondered how he would bounce back after defeats…

Since the 8-2, i think he has made it clear that he has that bouncebackabilty in abundance πŸ™‚

Charlie Nik and Merse reckon he is the best in the PL right now….

  20. rico says:

Hi DG – i’m kind of with you on that, yes things are vastly imroving but there is a long way to go to before we start thinking we have cracked it, but it;s certainly a lot better than it was a few weeks ago..

Hi Lee – I hate the winter too, dark by 4.40pm and it’s still dark now, i feel for you with your early starts, had a few years of them myself and just horrid πŸ™

  21. TT says:

I agree with you on TV as a tactical leader dg but I recon that’s because he is a CB and sees the game much better than a striker.

As for charismatic qualitys of RvP spot on, he is hugely admired by the other players and staff.

  22. rico says:

    Hi goonster – X factor, I wish πŸ˜‰

AK, agree re the club opening up, thought more would have gone…

The M5 incident is being atrributed to a huge firework display nearby…

Sad about Smokin Joe passing away, another taken by the horrid evil disease….

  23. goonster says:

Goddamn it rico…its just november. We are still in 4 major competitions. We ll be playing the quarters at home against shitty who might wanna rest players for the trip to merseyside. Win that and we are three games to a major title. Believe you guys believe! I ll tell you one thing though….this team won’t lose that carling cup final last season. COYGS. Come on! Yes am done. Thank you very much.

  24. rico says:

Behave Stanley, we are not even in the final…

Take a peep at Citeh’s second string, they would be most sides…. And, don’t forget we too will be resting players for the CC fixture, it will be really tough….

  25. rico says:

TT – i’m not a fan of captains as strikers, nor midfileders really, always a keeper or central defender if it were down to me….

  26. goonster says:

well am not buying it…shitty are beatable. Take out silva and they are pretty toothless. We ll turn them around and you know why…cause we ve got santos!

  27. allezkev says:

Gotta say that Cittie have a remorseless drive about the way they play. Efficient but lacking in joy, a bit like Mourinho’s Chelsea if less defensive.
They also have a whole host of players who can snatch a goal/goals to save/win games that they should lose.
I fear that they could go uncomfortably close to our records.

  28. goonster says:

That’s what am here for ma’am, that’s what am here for! Anyway I believe we ve turned the corner and I don’t care what you lot think!

  29. rico says:

AK, qpr cam very close at the weekend, i think that the further they progress in the CL, it will take it’s toll – they will slip up soon but not too often, mind you, just once will do for us πŸ˜‰

Certainly can’t Lee, i think Stanley’s cup is already full though πŸ˜‰

    Wonder what percentage πŸ˜‰

  30. allezkev says:

    Rico, i hope you’re right.
But yes, as much as i want to see them knocked outta europe, them staying in, with all the extra games, should see our records survive.
But i can only see them getting stronger and stronger over the next 3 or 4 years, so we may only see it postponed.

  31. allezkev says:

Funnily enough Rico, Citties next away game, in the EPL, is at Anfield and they have an awfull record at Liverpool.
    Fingers crossed…. :I

  32. allezkev says:

According to another player at Rennes, it’s between Arsenal and Real Madrid for M’Vila in the summer…..
Maybe we missed the boat last August?

  33. rico says:

Agree about them and the CL AK….

Guess that means i have to be cheering the dippers on for their next game πŸ™ What is the world coming too….

Lee, did you see the peice by Wenger about the ffp? He reckons it won’t mean much….

  34. goonster says:

AK,hahahahaahaha dude lee really did you in men. Hahahaha. Hey lee what cheap root did you get kev. I need it for me boss. Am hoping to get a payrise soon. Who knows maybe he ll agree too!

  35. allezkev says:

I’ll tell ya what, don’t worry about Cittie, have a look at the scummers fixtures up to the New Year.
On their present form, they could, sadly, win the lot… 😑

  36. allezkev says:

December 17th and December 21st could be two seminal fixtures for our season.
The first game could have quite a bearing on the outcome of the second…

  37. devilgunner says:

No Goonster, I am being realistic. I know we are in 4 competitions still but I also know that until this team wins a cup it will not have surmounted the peak.

Until we are in four competitions I always like to think that the glass is more than half full, but psychologically this team needs to win something which is meaningful.

But I do agree that we have developed spine which was missing in the last 2 to 3 years. Its like hearing the musical piece by Tchaikovsky 1812…..it builds up slowly and reaches its peak bit by bit. Or the soundtrack Gladiator.

A team takes a lot of time to build. And its not only in tactics and players. Its also mentally which needs to be built. And the togetherness. its the WE AGAINST THE WORLD. .That takes a very long time. The more this team stays and plays together the more it will grow stronger.

But 95% of it will come out of lifting a cup.

  38. goonster says:

Throw some of that root my direction aK. Papa needs a new car! Rico don’t worry your pretty head about the scummers. Come they are scums and you know where we find such! There luck ll run out sometime then we ll now see “arry’s atomic twitch.

  39. goonster says:

Them roots are beginning to take effect……can’t spell right. Hey AK how do cope my man.I can barely see. Lord this is some good shit.

  40. allezkev says:

Lee, that’s only three bloody days in between journey’s to Madchester and Birmingham, where that Scottish shit McLeish will be waiting to ambush us.
    Bloody hard core.
    Needs some carefull rotation methinks.

  41. devilgunner says:

Careful mates……soon there will be time when hell would be unleashed and I can tell you friends……the team facing us will not cherish it. It will come. It came to us and the laws of life say that one day or another we will unleash hell.

Sorry to be so long getting back (working), However I want to see how we react when something goes wrong, a loss another injury. We may have pulled up our socks a bit but it’s how we react to adversity that will define for me whether we have turned the proverbial corner.

  44. allezkev says:

I know your gone now Rico. But i’ve just been into the garden to wrap some cloth around our outside tap [protect it from the frost] and winter is acoming. It’s bloody bitter out there.

  46. goonster says:

Hi rico….seen the news yet? Wenger was in contact with maureen over the granero issue. We ll get him. You just wait.

  47. rico says:

Hi goonster, i did read that little article, Maureen wants to keep him though until the summer doesn’t he? Β£6m though, that’s a wenger signing πŸ˜‰

AK – re the tap, done our too with bubble wrap, won’t be long before the ice comes i think…..

  48. Micko says:

Much better than your last one kev,

Dunno about turning a corner, scoring from one would be a bonus though.

  49. goonster says:

Hey micko we did score from a corner over the weekend. Forgotten already? Vermaelin’s goal was courtesy a corner!

  50. rico says:

It’s all in the best possible taste Lee πŸ˜‰

goonster, would be nice for Merts to get off the mark with a thumping header from one of Robin’s corner…

  51. Micko says:

Wath, talking of links, do you remember when we were linked with platini, apparently we were pretty close to signing him, what a player he would have been for us at the time.
It allegedly fell through because tottenham were also interested in signing the player who was having an affair with platini’s wife and platani said he didn’t want to be anywhere near him, you couldn’t make it up.

  52. goonster says:

And hey we did get ricky….parlemo’s president can attest to that. Mata’s a greedy mug. Not fit to wear the glorious red and white just like nashit.

  53. W.A.T.H says:

I remember the Ruud Krol story as well Micko and Maradona at one stage…! there have been soooooo so many over the years eh….!

  54. goonster says:

Hold the phone! We were after maradona? Diego maradona? Diego maradona of Argentina? Diego maradona of the “hand of god” fame? Diego maradona that made the English team look silly? Wow! So what happened?

  55. W.A.T.H says:

Think we were also liked with Neijskins and Rencenbrink as well from that awesome dutch side…! Them two with Ruud Krol would of done me…! πŸ™‚

  56. W.A.T.H says:

We were linked with his very early 80’s Stan and I would say work permits and money is why it never happened but we were def trying to get him at one point…!

  57. goonster says:

Yeah WATH still hurts as hell. The little shrimp broke my heart when he signed for the chavs. Good thing he didn’t sign for the abomination down seven sisters…..brrrrr.

  58. allezkev says:

Yeah Wath, i remember all that Platini stuff.
Apparantly the guy sorting out his Missus was link with a move to Scummers at the same time we was chasing him.
As you said, Platini wanted to move as far away from his crafty team mate as he could.
Think they were both playing for St Etienne at the time.

  59. Micko says:

Just a little micky take goonster, don’t worry he’s got broad shoulders he can handle it, he was probably playing left back for strasbourg when all these deals were going down.

  60. Micko says:

Kev, the sooner that shower move out of shite hart lane the sooner we can use it as a car park on match days.

  61. goonster says:

    Javi’s agenda Arsenal
    Por Gonzalo GuimarΓ£es
Arsene Wenger wants to strengthen the midfield and admire the qualities of the Spanish. It was the best field in the Eusebio Cup with the Gunners. Termination clause of 30 million.
The Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia, 24, is a target for Arsenal next season, according to Cadena SER radio, which resembles the admiration of the Arsenal coach, Arsene Wenger for Spanish players.

The departure of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona was filled with the hiring of a compatriot, Mikel Arteta (ex-Everton), and Wenger will have in your notebook, two more names from the neighboring country, Javi Garcia, Benfica, and Granero of Real Madrid.

After the bad start to the season, the coach of the emblem of London is now seeking to recover and, above all, to stabilize the club, after several important outputs, cases of Fabregas, Nasri and Clichy. While plans have next season, and Javi Garcia is seen as an excellent choice for a place where there are abundant options, because Denilson was on loan to Sao Paulo.
The Cameroonian Alex Song has been the usual bet, while the Frenchman Diaby recovering from injury, leaving the young Frimpong, Ghanaian-born English. Few alternatives to the aspirations of a club like Arsenal, who struggle to overcome all the evidence

I’ve probably got more chances of a midweek game tbh Lee.
