Striker deal looming? Fans will decide Wenger's Future!…..

This summer is as far as I know, the first time this name has been linked with Arsenal..

Emmanuel Rivière is 21 years old and currently plays for French club AS Saint-Étienne in Ligue 1.

He’s described a s being a main striker BUT can also play on either wing!

Here he is......................

He’s played through the age levels for France but has yet to represent the ‘big boys’, his nickname is ‘Manu’

Well, we have already had one Manu who was just mighty fine, we have also had a striker who could operate on either wing – he was just awesome and holds the clubs goal scoring record, probably always will….

Inevitably, because Rivière plays in his dual role of striker come winger, he’s been labelled as the ‘New Henry’ – I am not sure his career stats back that up.

84 Appearances – 19 goals and 8 assists hardly make him the next wonder striker in the making do they?

Or do they??

Well, let me remind you of our own Thierry Henry and his stats before he joined Arsenal…

At Monaco he made 141 appearances, scored 28 goals and had 37 assists, then at Juventus he made 20 appearances, scored just 3 goals and had just 2 assists!

Hardly figures that would make every Arsenal fan shout from the roof tops ‘Go get him Arsene’ are they?? Not today anyway, we are all so desperate for the club to sign a striker who will score goals for fun aren’t we…..?

The player himself is chuffed to be linked with us –

I am flattered to be linked with the clubs mentioned. I am a young player, so to be linked with Arsenal is fantastic for me.

If Arsene Wenger is interested in you it means you have potential to be a very good player. People compare me to Thierry Henry, and that is a big compliment. If I can achieve half of his career I will be happy.

He only signed a new deal at Saint-Etienne last season but, he’s hardly likely to cost the earth, he’s still pretty much unknown.

Yep, like I said earlier, he’s got Wenger’s name written all over it……

The only thing is, Kenny Dalglish is taking an interest in him too so if Rivière really is a target of Arsene Wenger, he best act fast because sure as heck, King Kenny won’t hang around…

Maybe this fella really could be the ‘next Thierry Henry’ – Only because he can play central and on both wings of course, and he’s French… 😉

There will only ever be one Thierry Henry and he was ours and always will be in every Arsenal fans heart…

Just as we will always be in his….…..

Just briefly touching on last night’s goings on, I was quite surprised to read that Ivan Gazidis suggested that Wengers future would be ultimately be down to the fans.

He said:

Arsene is ultimately accountable to the fans – they ultimately make judgment. If you are seeing the relationship between the fans and the manager break down over time that is unsustainable. But I don’t think we are anywhere near that.

Hasn’t this ‘relationship’ already broken down??

Anyway, Mr G promised a busy summer in the transfer market, just like Wenger has before him. We are supposedly talking to many targets but the bit he left out is that those targets have all said ‘No’…. 😉

Otherwise, we’d have signed a few of them by now wouldn’t we?

I forgot:: is a good sense announce a player only when the League finishs. In my opinion, it’s what is done with Alvarez.

Argentianian League. finish next weekend. Velez is the champion (Alvarez club). Brasil I think was finished. Last weekend was the final cup. July is the American cup. Colombia won Toulon tournament.
And the price of the players is very important…
News, comment by others ones:
a)Arsenal are in talks with Ivorian striker Gervinho, currently serving in Lille, said Frédéric Paquet, director general of the French champions.
“He wants to go and has been in contact with Arsenal. Let’s see what happens, “he assures, adding that the club is not willing to sell Gervinho for PSG.
“We’re not thinking about strengthening a competitor, ” he said in remarks to the newspaper La voix des sports.
This season, Gervinho, which only has one more year contract with Lille, scored 15 goals and ten assists in the championship held.
Frédéric Paquet also assured that the Belgian Hazard, the orbit of several clubs, is not transferable
b) Fellow team Fabregas at Arsenal, the Frenchman Bacary Sagna admitted the Spaniard wants to play for Barcelona.
“I can say that it is true that Cesc wants to go to Barca-fabregas wants to return his homeland, to their hometown. Want to play one of the best teams in the world, FC Barcelona, and understandably so.
At the moment, is still the captain of Arsenal, “Sagna admitted to the program by Luis Fernandez on RMC radio.
Hiring Fabregas is a big priority for Barcelona next season.

Rico, I am sorry but i think you are living in the past, Love the club, i think that is Bull nowadays, Ronaldo has been offered 21 million supposedly to move to city, he is on 13million a year at Real and he has said no, he said he would be quite happy to sign for life at Real if they asked him, does that mean he loves Real, or he has enough money already and likes sunshine. Ive worked for loads of firms and never loved any of them, footballers are no different in my opinion. I moved from one job to another for a few quid, At the end of the day its just a job

AW continues in South America?
In my opinion, is to find players to replace Fabregas and Nasri, without great cost (up from 4 million to 5 million) and risks. Any player in Europe is hired at 20 or 30 million and may be a failure. Risking a maximum of 5 million can be an asset or in case of failure, be relatively easy to be transacted

rico, i think samir can love the club while still hedging his bets, absolutely…

he may love arsenal football club as an institution, but if he sees the extent of this club’s ambition as simply to finish top four year after year and “compete” (not necessarily win) for trophies – and if neither arsene or anyone else can provide assurance that this ambition won’t change, i would consider him perfectly entitled to consider his position…i certainly would under those circumstances. and for me, it wouldn’t mean that i don’t love the club – it may mean i don’t love the people running or managing the club…

my argument may be complete nonsense and it may indeed be all about the $$ for samir…if that is the case, the club should draw a line in the sand with him and prepare themselves to sell him if he won’t extend his deal. however, i am not convinced this is actually the case, and until i am, i am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. or until it becomes clear that he is holding the club to ransom. for, while considering his options, he also needs be prepared for the eventuality that the club and he will not come to an agreement…if this happens, samir needs to be just as ready to move on as the club should be…

steve, my view is similar to rico’s…we cannot keep hoping for the next great kid to get us over the hump…we have some good young players and some not-so-good young players on the books…not everyone will make it.

what we should not do is be afraid to address the “here and now” needs in our squad simply because we have bartley and miquel already on the books. there are no guarantees the either of them will make it, and i think our club expects that many of our youth players won’t make it here, and so can be sold for profit.

Oliver thats what i am afraid of, we have bought One or two young defenders but if we buy two ready players whats the point, IG said they will be busy in the summer, He is going to have to be.

rico, do you think arsene would come out and say that samir has not affixed his signature because he is not sure we are set up to win during the next couple of years? or because he doubts arsene is the best man to get the most out of this squad? when asked, arsene is, of course, going to say that there are “little problems” with the contract…that could mean anything. i have heard tons of speculation that samir wants more money – but none i would necessarily deem as credible.

i don’t think we should be so quick to label samir as a greedy mercenary. if there are other underlying issues, our club is not one that will publicize them.

point is that we don’t know what samir is demanding – if demand is even the right term – be it wages, assurances, etc…for now, i am willing to give samir the benefit of the doubt and say it is not as simple as many in the media seem to make it…

oliver

steve, i get your point, but your argument can easily be flipped…i.e., stockpiling kids leads to trouble…if you have more kids on the books than you have squad slots, you are forced into playing them, and can possibly lock yourself out of purchasing ready-made, experienced players – which i think every squad needs – the type of players which will get a promising, oh-so-close squad over the proverbial hump…

the answer is in expectations…not every player that is brought through the ranks should be considered potential first team regulars…there will be some hit-and-miss…every player should ideally have exposure to the first team, with the view of attracting suitors for the players who show themselves a level or two below our best and brightest…

not everybody is ready for the first team, and i don’t think that everyone is potentially first team material…there is room for at least a couple of experienced squad purchases…

Been thinking about Cesc and Nas and i have to admit i have now reservations. I sat with a piece of paper and tried to put down my best team and found i had too many good players to chose from. I started to think of all your preferences, Samba Cahill Gervinho Benzema Young Parker and so on only too find i had far too many players to field in a team of eleven i found that if i put who i would like in the back line, just say Sagna. Cahill Samba Virmin then i looked at midfield Nas Cesc Jack Rambo. Then up front Robin and Theo. what do i do with.
Squil, Kosi Bartley Miquel Song Frimpong Lansbury DiabyRyo Vela Chamy Arsh and so on.

So when we look at buying, where is everybody going to go, if say we bought two experienced back liners we must lose quite a few,Would you want to lose Kosi Bartley and the rest, and midfield if Cesc and Nas stays and Lansbury moves in where do we put these players.

if…as with everything else, if…

i think i am in the minority when i say that i feel samir not yet signing a contract does not automatically equate to him not wanting to play for us – i don’t know enough about his reasons to characterize this as a “he wants to play for us or he doesn’t” black or white situation. do i wish he would commit now? certainly…if he has reservations regarding arsene, where the club is heading, his team-mates, would i blame him? certainly not…after all, don’t many of us have at least some reservations about all three of these aforementioned aspects? should we really blame samir for hedging his bets if these things are influencing his decision?

i think a big difference between your perspective and mine is that i don’t see this as a situation where samir is holding the club to ransom – at least not yet…the longer it drags on, the closer we get to that situation. but hopefully things will come to a head before then, and this will be resolved one way or another. in an ideal world, samir discuss his particular reservations – whatever they may be – openly…yet that would effectively hold the club to ransom, as to do so will publicly call the club out…

this situation is anything but ideal…if his motivations are purely money, the club should draw a line in the sand – take it or leave it, if you will…if samir has other reservations, such as the club’s direction, management, quality of players, style of play, etc, the club and he should try and work these out privately – hopefully they are…

i won’t say he is holding us to ransom or is only interested in sick jack just yet…

oliver
oliver

samir’s situation is a little more complicated for me – i am not certain it is entirely about money. i think it is at least possible that his apparent reluctance to commit may be linked to cesc’s status in one way or another…i don’t know…

if samir is about money, then sell him to spain or italy. don’t worry about the club selling him to man united – that will never, in a million years, happen. united need a midfielder like him, and we are not going strengthen them, no matter what the circumstances…in fact, we won’t strengthen any prem rival with a player of his caliber.

we’ll see how that goes. whatever his motivations, i doubt that he will be allowed to start next season in a position where he can walk away for nothing after the season…

oliver
oliver

possibly…we’ll see how things go this summer. i think we are fast approaching the point where we need to ask whether or not sanctioning a cesc transfer to barcelona might not be in all parties best interests…obviously, getting fleeced will not be in afc’s interests in any way, shape or form…but if a reasonable deal can be done, perhaps this summer is the time to do it.

cesc is our captain and a huge player for us, but he is not irreplacable. any player – or manager – can be replaced…

oliver
oliver

rico, i don’t think he is either…yet, should we see a summer of inertia, his comment from yesterday could then be cast as referring to what already took place. it would be revisionist, but its vague enough allow the club room to do that (recast)…

i think samir will ultimately stay – cesc, i am not so sure…part of me thinks that something has already been in place for a while (perhaps as far back as last summer) and the transfer (to barcelona) will not be confirmed until a point where it will be more palatable for arsenal supports…the fee will, of course, be “undisclosed”…

maybe…maybe not…

it was an orchestrated pr event, no more, no less. i certainly had no illusions that ig would say anything that could pin the club down…and i understand why he wouldn’t – so i am not necessarily disappointed with last night’s meeting…just apathetic, as i expected very little from it.

take ig’s comment that we will have “some new signings coming in and some of the existing squad going out” that sounds great on the face of it, as i don’t think anyone can reasonably argue that our squad needs some freshening up…however…

we have already had one signing (jenkinson) arrive, and several youth (randall, cruise, etc) players released. the cynic can point to that as possibly the extent of our summer activity. ig was intentionally vague here – i agree with not tipping our proverbial hand. yet it also serves as cover if, as some probably suspect, the club plans to follow the recent season pattern of only limited player transactions…

i personally do not think that is the case – i do think we will see more departures than arrivals, but as we have some young players who may well be ready to make the step up to the senior squad, i do not consider this as necessarily a bad thing…

i think that jenkinson will not be our only arrival, but i also think that we will not see a massive influx. i struggle to believe that even arsene thinks we can stand still considering how last season panned out. who comes and who goes remains to be seen, but i do think that we will have a busier summer than the last few…it may be slow now, but i think things will pick up over the next few weeks…

whether things change for the better or not…well, that remains to be seen…and that will be a discussion for another day, supported by an adequate sampling…

News:
Chelsea seem willing to do anything to ensure the Croatian midfielder Luka Modric, Tottenham. According to British media on Tuesday, the Blues are willing to offer Didier Drogba in order to amortize the amount payable to the Spurs.
Given the reluctance of Spurs losing your brain’s midfield, the team Abramovich “waves” now with Drogba, a former love of Harry Redknapp, who never hid like a lot of the qualities of the Ivorian.
At Stamford Bridge, Modric would earn a weekly salary of 130,000 pounds (150,000 euros), a value close to triple the Croatian earns at White Hart Lane.
The coach of the Spurs conceded last week that did not want to lose his star: “Of course we want to keep Luka. It’s a special player and we want to keep it. If we sell, we will basically sell the club …”.

Good morning!
No news on new players and the players coming out?
Not yet realized how we lost Gameiro …
I remembered yesterday the 1st game of the League in Liverpool. We played with Almunia, Wilshere (replaced), Chamack (the large rib), Vermaelen … against 10 and we got a whole lot drawing 1-1 against the “new” Liverpool with its new large acquisitions, Joe Cole, Jovanovic, N’gob … (where we are going to these big acquisitions …). It curiosocomo summarized the season: the highest percentage of ball, conceding a goal in numerical advantage and only get a draw “miraculously, ” many of the ball passes without progression, an inability to shoot forward and create shots on goal and a defense / goalkeeper who is frightened and trembles with any ball pumped into the area

I’m hoping we will sign him, I agree with you oliver, that we need a striker, but Gervinho is a winger. We exactly don’t have many of those, have we? 😉

Also, i’m really hoping that Theo will be used as a striker.. He could cause a lot of problems for the defenders with his pace if you asked me.. and he could create extra space for the other players..

I don’t think the relationship with the fans has broken down already.

We hear a lot from the vocal minority, who, it must be said, are somewhat irrational and emotional but the majority still support the current management. We were all frustrated at the end of last season, as Mr G said himself but we are not one of the also-ran clubs who sack the manager whenever they get a few bad results.

In the end, our implosion at the end of last season may be a blessing in disguise, because it has made crystal clear that there are problems to be addressed, whereas, in the past, it has been possible to write off failure as a fluke or bad luck. It seems from what Mr G said that everybody is on the same page now on that point.
