Sanchez trying to delay Arsenal return? Last chance for a few this weekend…

Morning all.

The Emirates Cup, love it of loathe it it’s back having skipped a year in 2016 so the turf could be tarted up. It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year already really.

This weekend is the last time for younger players and fringe players to push their way into contention for when the new season kicks off. Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock have continued to train with the first team since landing back in London and they were joined by Jack Wilshere who has returned from injury, Callum Chambers, Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin too after being on international duty during the summer. Yet to return though is Alexis Sanchez and Shkodran Mustafi although they are set to join up with their team-mates over the weekend.

“Alexis and Mustafi, their first training session will be on Sunday, the day we play against Sevilla [in the Emirates Cup],” Arsene Wenger told Arsenal Player. “They are practising on the day.”

Lucas Perez, Kieran Gibbs, Chuba Akpom, Mathieu Debuchy and Carl Jenkinson, all of whom have been linked with an exit before the transfer window closes, were also involved in training yesterday and some and some got a run out last night in a friendly against Boreham Wood. Akpom opened the scoring from the penalty spot, Stephy Mavididi grabbed himself a brace and Jon Toral popped up with a goal too. Whether either of those three will be involved at the weekend remains to be seen, same with young Eddie Nketiah but I’d have thought thy’ll be resting.

Santi Cazorla, Joel Campbell and Gabriel are the only ones on the injury list as far as I know. Campbell is long term, which pretty much blows any chance of him being sold and bearing in mind he’s into his last year of contract, it looks like he might be in line to leave for free this time next year if he’s not in the long-term plans of Arsene Wenger which I doubt he is. Gabriel’s injury isn’t too serious and should be back in a few weeks time according to the manager.

So, up first for us tomorrow is Benfica, the team who snatched Chris Willock from us this summer. Then on Sunday, we face Seville, both of whom are pretty tough opponents. The other club making up the four is RB Leipzig, a team with a player who a few Arsenal fans believe would slot into our midfield quite nicely, although his heart seems to be set on joining Liverpool according to the media. Goodness only knows why! It’ll certainly be worth watching Leipzig just to see what Keita would bring to the Premier League.

Anyway, as said, neither of the teams we are facing are weak, so both should give this Arsenal team another good workout which is just what they need so close to the season opener next week at Wembley against the team which in all honesty, batter us good and proper just a few days ago. This weekend is also about Arsene Wenger making final decisions on players and whether they are good enough to make the step up into the first team, or does he need to dig deep into his pockets to find a few quid for one or two new ones. What do you mean, he wouldn’t leave it this late?……….

Theo Walcott has been talking about the weekend’s tournament and how important it is for the season ahead:

It’s time to get in the right frame of mind, play against strong teams on a nice pitch, and just do the right things, the things that get you into the team,” he told Arsenal Player. “You want to win as well, to get into the winning habit. We tend to have quite a good record at that.

We’ve lost the opening game of the season over the past few years I think, so we need to make sure that pattern changes this year. We’re playing against strong teams in all the games we’re playing in pre-season, so there’s no excuse for a slow start.

This team’s had ups and downs but we need to start well first. Starting well is the main priority and then we’ve got to push on from there.

The manager has said that right from the first day here: make sure there’s a fast start. That’s why it’s important for us to play these bigger teams in pre-season, to be mentally ready and switched on. We need to get into good habits, that’s the main thing. It’s all about a positive start, and results will make that happen.

Poor old Theo, why does it always seem to be him who’s shoved in front of a microphone and expected to reel out all the positive talk ahead of the new season? Mind you, he’s right. The players do need to get into the habit of winning, winning breeds confidence and we need that right from the get go.

Have a good Friday guys and gals….

PS- Alexis Sanchez has posted on Instagram that he’s sick. I wonder if he’s trying to wriggle out of returning on Sunday. The plot thickens, or am I just an old cynic….?

  1. George says:

    Hi Rico,

Are you going? It will be interesting to see how we face up to Seville, as we are expected to turn over Benfica and Leipzig…

Alexis is delaying , that’s not the old cynic…the plot will thicken as the transfer window approches its close.

I am optimitistic Jens Lehman will push some of these brittle youngsters and lift them to the next level. I am curious to see what happens to Toral, Bielik and Akpom…These players are ready to compete , at squad level and snathc minutes alongside Maitland Niles…

As for Jack, Theo , Gibbs, Chambers and Jenks…I would be worried if i wasnt sold and the squad started brightly without them…

Nketiah, Willock ,Nelson,Brammall and Malen will be U23 squad playrs and a handful of League cup appearances.

Has Jeff R A got a squad number yet?

  2. rico says:

Hi George, no, it’s the TV for me although I’d like to go one year. Perhaps once AW has left…

Jens has it in him to be strong, but will Wenger allow him to be?

    Not sure re Jeff.

  3. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, seeing as though people have said for years Wenger wouldn’t employ strong characters, I reckon it’s a good chance he will allow Jens to be Jens.

  4. potter says:

I am holding out for Mavididi , 2″ taller than Mbappe , Has a good scoring record , same age , got to be worth a punt as once was Akpom. You send these guys away and they don’t progress. If you keep them and blood them early develop them at home you might just save £ 100 million pounds.

Powerful striker Stephy was the under-21s’ top goalscorer last season, hitting the target 17 times in 30 appearances to help Steve Gatting’s side earn promotion to Division One.

In the play-off final, the front man struck twice against Aston Villa in an emphatic 3-1 victory at Emirates Stadium. The forward was also ever present in Arsenal’s FA Youth Cup run to the semi-final, scoring three times in the competition.

  5. Wavy says:

Oldest excuse in the book! Ring in sick, shits and socks is the usual one, muffle the speaker with a sock and sound slow and poorly! No one ever disbelievers you and you can keep it up for days! I know plenty who used this practise for years, and got away with it, we’ll sort of. Work mates learn, especially when it happens on a regular basis, as it was the rest of the staff who picked up the pieces and had to work twice as hard to compensate for yet another absence! Perhaps that’s part of Alexis’ master escape plan strategy? Cunning, very cunning!

Morning all. Sunny intervals here. Not a bad summer’s day…..so far.

  6. Wavy says:

Socks = sicks – auto correct syndrome!
Plus a couple more but, I’m feeling sick and I can’t be bothered?

  7. potter says:

Haven’t seen him live Scott , so can’t really comment but he looks promising and another I would want to keep at the club. Look what Pulis did to Gnabry , we can’t risk that again.

  8. ScottfromOz says:

Agreed, Potter, and this is where a year of Europa League may come in handy-trying to find a positive 🙂
Rico, Nelson was brilliant over here.
I know the competition wasn’t the absolute best, but these kids were still playing experienced professional footballers, and grown men, so stood up very well.

  9. rico says:

    Ha ha Wavy.

Why would he be any different though Scott. Who’d have thought Bould would have been quiet. Jens has already spoken in the ‘Wenger’ way I’m sure..

Neymar has been brawling in training, guess he wants out of Barca then…

  10. rico says:

He does Scott, a few look as if they might to be fair. I know the PL etc is very different to a friendly, but I’m sure a few will feature in the cup matches…

  11. frednerk says:

    Afternoon Rico and All

Friday’s Arsene like’s friday’s when it comes to announcements
this is his day for signing player’s.
I still think Lemar is the one he wants.

  12. West Sussex gooner says:

I still think lemar will be an arsenal player by the start of the season , what do people think is Sanchez going or staying? ?????

  13. Obi says:

Hi All don’t know how true it is, but the reported latest rejected bid for Lemar was 44.7m ……incredible, that’s showing ambition…… if am Sanchez I will be sick in Chile until am sold.

  14. Adam says:

Afternoon Rico. But surely Wenger has said that Sanchez will not be sold. That means an open invitation to his detractors if he is sold.

  15. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning all.
We have a solid defensive unit.
We’ve always had a decent midfield-now we have some solid DM options.
We have bought a top class striker.
I reckon we just need that winger who can deliver a cross and we will be ok.
    Morning all.

  16. rico says:

    Morning Adam, Scott and all..

Agree, same old problems. No Santi replacement signed, Alexis is off and no-one is to replace him, if he can even be replaced. Still think we need another CB and probably another goal scorer if Perez is departing.

  17. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, do we really need another CB?
That’s one spot I reckon we are solid in.
Santi will be back so no need to replace him.
Alexis-well, not sure how you replace a world class Prima Donna, and not sure I want us to 🙂 🙂
Shame his temperament and attitude isn’t better because he could just win that Ballon D’or he’s spoken about.
    The ability is there.

  18. rico says:

    I think so Scott.

Kos seems to pick up a lot of injuries, Merts is older, Gabriel is dodgy, Holding is very good, Chambers is off it seems – Santi can’t be relied on, not one bit after his injury and his position is crucial. When he plays he’s our main man and we’ve seriously missed him. None of Ramsey, Elneny, Xhaka etc can do what he does, or even come close imo.

I’m convinced Alexis is off, so who will get the 30 odd goals he got for us last season?

I don’t really see much of a problem with Alexis attitude, he’s just a winner and at any cost..

  19. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, I certainly wouldn’t complain if we got another CB.
Lacazette will bang plenty in, and if we get that top class winger, we might finally see the very best of Giroud so I’d say we are ok there.
Santi-not sure how you replace him, to be honest.
Such a unique and talented player, we must pray he stays healthy this season.
We are cursing until he copped an injury last season.
We should not rely on one player, but we missed him more than I ever thought we would.
Winning at all costs describes the attitude of guys who dive and you know my thoughts on that 🙂

  20. Adam says:

Rico. Wenger has never really ‘done’ defence but I agree that a truly top-class centre back would give us an entirely more secure look. I imagined that this would be the close season when things might change but so far I see little evidence of anything other than tinkering. If Alexis does go then there will be a big hole to fill and a Santi replacement would be difficult to find but Wenger really should be making moves in that direction.

  21. rico says:

Alexis doesn’t dive imo. I think that allegation is harsh.

Expecting Lacazette to hit the ground running is a big ask, and Wenger would be foolish imo to rely on just him and Giroud as our strike force. If he does, we’ll win bugger all this season imo.

Different if Alexis stays, or even if Perez stays, but just two strikers isn’t enough imo.

I’d have thought with the glut of midfielders we have, a top coach would have one of them emulating the work Santi puts in by now, or at least doing something similar… However…

  22. frednerk says:

    Morning Rico and All

Arsene has spoken about how he is keeping active in
    the transfer market..snozzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Anyway he says that he will try to improve what we have
meaning I think make them better players.
Wrecking me brain trying to think of who has improved
    so far.
The brit pack have all fallen by the wayside:
Wheelchair..Jack gets injured putting his socks on.
Gibbs..He wants1st team action squad player only.
    Jenkinson..The invisibleman
Theooo…Arsene still don’t know where to play him.
Ramsey…Has now started to disappear of hie backside.
    Ox…Just wants to play..Position who know’s.
So who’s he talking about improving..
    Nurse.

  23. rico says:

Adam, ditto, and I thought we’d see those changes long before now but as you say, a bit of tinkering is all we’ve got so far and time is pressing on..

Seems to me that as soon as we went on tour, transfer plans were put on hold because Wenger wants to be involved. As so many have mentioned before, this club seriously needs a Director of Football to get things moving and leave Wenger to get on with whatever it is he should be getting on with.

  24. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, I’ll continue to consider him a diver but so be it:
We can’t afford to lose him and Perez, however, , and if we do, once again Wenger will have failed in a TW.

  25. rico says:

Morning Fred. I read those comments on the official site earlier and I couldn’t help but smile. I’m sure the words were copied and pasted from last summer…

I know he won’t tell us who his targets are etc and I wouldn’t expect him too, but something more promising would be nice for a change.

  26. rico says:

Scott, I know you will, but you’re often wrong. lol

Guess Pires was a diver too, and Henry etc. All have gone over once or twice when perhaps they could have stayed on their feet…

And Eduardo should have been banned for ten matches after his dive against Celtic….

  27. frednerk says:

Please god we get to see another player like Sanchez
Scott you must have your Tv upside down.

This squad needs leaders a couple of dirty players
not sure this lot at the back have that.
The only player that stood out getting to the end was
Monrail and he is not what you would a call a fighter,
maybe this new leftback can have a go he looks a scrapper.

  28. Adam says:

If Sanchez does leave then surely the club must have seen it coming. Why haven’t they got a replacement lined up or are they going to embroil themselves in a messy divorce that nobody needs?

  29. rico says:

I’d love half of the Chile international side in our team Fred… lol

They’ll know Adam, all this talk from Wenger is just poppycock imo, he’ll be sold before the window closes because there’s no way the club would risk losing so much money next summer. Kroenke and Wenger would have nightmares about that…

  30. Adam says:

Rico. I’m not so sure. It will depend on what fee they could get. But it surely should have been sorted out a long time ago.

  31. frednerk says:

The stakes are higher,we were supposed to be up with
the big boys, very little has changed for me.
What was once exciting has now become the same old bore
4th spot looks a dream from here to me.
How many gooners think we can win the league with this lot.
The FA cup is only 6 games..Is that Arsene’s only goal again.

    I know I’m boring.

Only part I like is that the young players may be given a go.

  32. rico says:

Adam, surely they wouldn’t get much ore than we paid for him with just a year on his contract?

If he is forced to stay, will we see the same level of commitment we’ve seen so far I wonder? He doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who’d sulk etc, so I hope so. But who knows what we’d get from an unhappy player IF he does 100% want out.

  33. Adam says:

If Man City or Chelsea are desperate enough for him Rico then the amount of money will mean little to them I would imagine. Selling him to other PL club would be risky but, at the bottom of it all, a contract is merely a business arrangement for some.

  34. ScottfromOz says:

I’m always wrong, Rico, after all, I am married 🙂 🙂
If Arsene does sell Alexis, going against everything he’s said, I’m sure nobody will be surprised but if he sells to a competitor, he’s going to bring more criticism and abuse than he’s ever encountered, and will have nobody to blame but himself.

  35. ScottfromOz says:

Ps, Rico, you’ll never see me defending any diver, no matter who they play for, nor how good they are/were.

  36. Adam says:

I would think that his goals ‘might’ be replaced by some creativity in the transfer market though. We wait with anticipation.

  37. rico says:

Ha ha Adam, but I’ve always been an old cynic. Just more cynical these days, certainly when it comes to Arsenal under Wenger… 😉

  38. Obi says:

    Hi All:

Even if Sanchez stays, big if, how can AW sit still with the squad that he has in comparison to what other teams are doing.

AW has only bought one player for 52m and got Sead for free, a player that City and Inter were willing to pay 25 and 30m for last January, but he’s still dithering with a bid of 45m for Lemar. Why not spend some of the money you saved on Sead n offer 50-60m for Lemar who can replace Santi also? Additionally, he can still sell about 5 players and use that money also to improve the squad. Honestly it’s not rocket science.

Granted Sanchez is getting bad advice and going about things in a wrong way, but if you can achieve your ambition and get loads of money for it why not. Stop blaming Sanchez, blame AW, he makes promises and don’t keep them.

  39. rico says:

What a bizarre question. If you don’t know that answer Gg, perhaps you need to read a few books about the club… lol

  40. Bondex says:

I just Love this place….. Hi everyone. I couldn’t post any comment yesterday don’t know why. The truth is we all seem to be able to see where this team is heading in the coming season…except Arsene.

  41. rico says:

That’s annoying Bondex, I didn’t notice any problems yesterday. Could you email me please if that happens again..

  42. rico says:

That was enjoyable in parts. Xhaka looks knackered and the season hasn’t even begun… lol

Anyway, talking to myself is boring…. Later.

  43. Meerkat says:

    Evening all.
So, sulky Sanchez pulls a sicky. So much for wanting to play every game, and giving the club 100%.

Well after a shaky start we won easily. We don’t want any injuries, so I thought the team did enough, just enough, to win.

Will we miss Sanchez? Yes of course, his goals, but not his whinging attitude, which must piss his teammates off.
This game convinces me even more, that Giroud and Theo should stay. they can be relied upon for goals.

Le Prof looked rejuvenated, I hope it lasts, but he will have the world on his back if we start the season poorly. He should never have come out and said Sanchez is not going anywhere, he needed to make it clear that he would cost top dollar.

If Citeh and Chavs want him so badly, why haven’t they put in a sensible offer for him yet? If money’s no object they are a bit slow. Unless they won’t pay that much for a bit-part player, who will warm the bench most games.

I wouldn’t trust Ospina if Cech (who is too old really) gets an injury, so a new goalie is a priority for me.

Good result, but the season starts with the Shield next week, when we should be beating Chavs as we did in the FACup final.

We have Welbeck, Giroud, Theo, Lacazette, Ozil if he turns up, up front and they have lost Costa, so we may just nick it if we keep it tight.

  44. Rick says:

    Evening Rico and the House.
Its been a very wet day down south but watching todays game it seems a little bit brighter now.
Very impressed with Kola the new L/B just like one we had a few years ago.
On todays performance it will be a mistake not to keep Chambers at the club
I thought he looked a lot better then Holding.

I notice that M.Niles is taking some stick for the way played
For the last 2years it has been clear to me (and his Mum) that the lad is not a defender.
But what do they do. In the tour games and todays he has been played at R/B,right wing back C/H and today L/B and Lwng back not once in his best place.
I have left the best to last
    Reiss Nelson
Rico I first saw Reiss play for England School boys 3 years ago and I think I told you about him at the time and said I thought he would be fast tracked. Seeing the way he has played in the last few games lead me to think and with the right coaching that this lad could be another Rocky. I really rate him that high.
    One thing for certain
    Watch your back OX

  45. ScottfromOz says:

Rick, Neilson has certainly impressed over the last few weeks.
Let’s hope that rate of improvement continues because he could end up anything.
On Sanchez-when I jump on here and read the overnight (my time) comments, I see plenty of things that defend him, and do make plenty of sense, so I find myself questioning my own opinion about the man and the entire saga, and where the real problem lies.
Then I get to Meerkats comment and I’m back to square one, because Meerkat criticises Wenger on occasions, and defends him on others yet is critical of the player here.
I then realise that most, if not all, defending Alexis also hate Wenger.

  46. gnarleygeorge9 says:

Just watched the Benfica highlights. Defence still not sured up, but some good signs overall. Must keep Alexis to win the PL. My feeling is he will stay. TBH, I think this sickie thing is him taking the piss. He, for instance, could be holding out so that pressure is put on old Froggie to sign the sort of players that will win the Title. Alexis staying will be the cream on top.

  47. Meerkat says:

Sanchez is gone. The sooner we accept that, and move on, the better. He is one player, and one player does not make or break Arsenal. He doesn’t respect the club and it’s traditions, or the fans.
The club are still paying his wages, and sick or not, he should be back here seeing the club doctor.
He is taking the piss gg.

Scott, you’re right. It does appear that it’s Sanchez or le prof with many people. We are all entitled to our opinions, but Wenger is here for the forseeable, and Sanchez isn’t, so I support the manager.

The fact is, I do feel he should have gone on a high after the FA Cup win, and don’t I agree with a lot of what he does, or has done, for the last few years. But I do believe he is loyal to the club and has it’s best interests at heart.
How many managers currently at our top clubs can you say that about? None that I can think of, although perhaps Klopp has at Liverpool, but only time will tell.
None of those managers will stay at their clubs for more than two or three seasons.
Like so many players, they are mercenaries, that’s all.
Wenger and Ferguson are a different breed, staying with the same club for so many years.
There comes a time though, that players have heard it all before and the same manager finds it difficult to keep them motivated. Fergie left at the right time, leaving Moyes to inherit an ageing side.

I just hope Wenger doesn’t hang on and subject himself to all the abuse again from unhappy fans. I don’t actually think any manager would do well under Stan Kroenke’s ownership.

  48. ScottfromOz says:

Meerkat, I’m labelled an AKB all the time, yet I’ve criticised him often enough.
Seems you either must want him gone, or to stay forever as there’s no in between.
I wanted him to go after the 2014 cup-a perfect opportunity, for mine.
I really don’t know why he stayed because I doubt he can actually improve as a manager at his age, but he stayed so I figured why get bitter, I’ll continue to support him as I will any manager at the club-any player, as well.
Alexis though, in my opinion, has never been an Arsenal player, wasn’t a Barca or Udinse player, either, he’s an Alexis player.
I’d love to see him stay and embrace the club, but it just won’t happen so off he goes BUT overseas.
The comparison to the RVP situation has its similarity-only one, for mine.
It involves selfish men with no bloody loyalty to the club and it’s fans whatsoever.
RVP used that infamous excuse of “lack of ambition” from the club as a way of walking away and copping a massive pay increase-weak approach from a piss weak human being, imo.
The bastard never once complained about ambition when laid up for months on end reach season, collecting his handsmone salary.
Why ANY fan would want the likes of these men to remain at the club, yet want someone who’s given their heart and soul for over 20 years is something I’ll never understand but so be it, we all have opinions and are entitled to them.
Oh yes, he’s been damn well paid is the reason Wener stays.
    And players aren’t?
The difference is, if Wenger was a mercenary he’d have taken one of the offers over the years but stayed, these players will jump ship for more money
    I’m an instant.
There’s your difference-well, in my mind, at least.
    He loves the club.
Alexis doesn’t, not a bit and nor did RVP.

  49. Obi says:

Why are people saying Sanchez is going? He goes only if Arsenal wants him to go….. Yes he wants to go, though he hasn’t said it publicly, but let’s not forget he has a contact.

On the flip side of the argument, AW don’t have to sell him. He can force him to stay. Arsenal is the 4th richest football club, its a big club, they should act like it…..Arsenal holds the cards; I know it’s an extreme position, but if he acts up sue him for breach of contract. AW is 100% right in his stance. Lets see if Chelsea or City will wait a year for him at 29 y.o.

  50. ScottfromOz says:

Obi, you’re right, but do we want a player at the club that doesn’t want to be there?
Even if he behaves himself, can any player be expected to give 100% under the circumstances?
Tough situation for the club, but it really should have been sorted 6-12 months ago.
Strange we aren’t hearing anything about Ozil possibly leaving, as he’s in the same boat, contract wise.

  51. rico says:

    Morning all.

Hi Rick. I do recall you talking about Reiss Nelson and right now it looks like you were spot on. He has slotted into this side like he’s been playing first team football for years. I hope he’s not sent out on loan because imo that would be a backwards move. If Mbappe can do it for Monaco, why can’t Nelson for us? It’s not like their age is that much different.

You’re right about Maitland-Niles too, he certainly doesn’t look comfortable defending but that’s what Wenger does, a bit like playing Bielik in defence instead of midfield. All very odd but nothing new..

Just because it worked with Toure and Lauren, it’s like he thinks it’ll work with everyone.

  52. Le Coq Monster says:

    Morning all.

    Scott AKA AKB ! 😆

I know in the past Wenger has contradicted himself, but this Alexis thing is really full blown on and he(Wenger) is going to look a right mug if Alexsis sold, so Alexis is going nowhere this season and this will only be put to bed (thank god) when the TW is over and Alexis being the person he is will play his heart out like he always does !…………………………………………….no doubt for the next month people on here will be saying ………………he`s going……….he`s staying…………………..but on this one I`m going to be a ………………..In Wenger We Trust !………………….the rest of it…….other transfers, tactics etc`………………..Im…………..In Wenger We Rust !……………..yes!………….half and half ………………………..a bit bisexual `till TW closes ! hahaha

  53. Le Coq Monster says:

Just hope Wenger doesn`t think we are the dogs doodahs just because we beat Benfica and Theo scored two !…………………….my granny could have scored the first one and she`s in an urn above the fire place !……………..probably need to lose against Sevilla to make Wenger check out who`s for sale at DFS !

  54. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, was Sagna a free transfer?
I can’t remember that far back lol
Flamini-was he EVER sold during his career?
    Morning all.

Good morning all, I know I am year off and a day on…..but it gets tougher daily to keep up with these rumor. If I was Arsene I will offer Sanchez to PSG and get £50m for him, I don’t want a repeat of 2012 summer, since Rvp left us high and dry I stopped having a favorite Arsenal player, I liked Alexis delivering the goals I never liked his person, you can’t keep complaining every minute, even the G.O.A.T messi never does that ( yes that’s a dig to that Whinger Ronaldo) I say if Alexis wants to go let him go, for me it’s all about the Arsenal and I can care less who goes so far Arsene gets the best out of those who wants to stay then I will always support my dear Arsenal
