Onana close to Arsenal move according to respected journalist.

Morning all.

Bukayo Saka has had a really good season for Arsenal. If one was to be super critical about his game, he doesn’t score enough goals. The same can be said of Arsenal in general though. Our young midfielder, winger/left back has been nominated for the Premier League Young Player Of The Season Award. He won’t get it though, just like Thierry Henry never won the Balloon.

The list of nominees:

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)
Ruben Dias (Manchester City)
Phil Foden (Manchester City)
Illan Meslier (Leeds)
Mason Mount (Chelsea)
Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)
Declan Rice (West Ham)

Dias or Foden are favourites I’m sure, so any player outside of Manchester City can forget it. I reckon Mount will come third.

A big congratulations to Bukayo Saka though for his call up to the England squad for this summers Euros. Selfishly though, I’d hoped he’d just miss out so his body would get a proper rest away from the game. Every player wants to represent his country though so it’ll be a proud moment for him when he steps out in England colours for the first time in a major competition.

The transfer rumours relating to Arsenal are in overdrive. Exciting eh? Ok, maybe not but they’re out there in numbers and one or two might turn out to be true. A combination of Sky Sports Paper Talk, NewsNow and Social Media have us linked to:

RB – Zeki Celik
CM – Albert Sambi Lokonga or Yves Bissouma
GK’s – Mat Ryan and Andre Onana

Sterling and Odegaard stories rumble on too.

If, and I know it’s a big if, Arsenal are looking to snap Ryan up for free and Onana on what is likely to be a much reduced fee because of his ‘drugs ban’ – surely Bernd Leno must be leaving?

If Arsenal are signing a right-back, Hector Bellerin is jetting off to pastures new.

A central midfielder? A must this summer I think but who’ll it’ll be remains to be seen.

I saw this on Twitter.

Funny eh.

A more serious note re Onana though is his appeal hearing today. He’s currently serving a twelve month ban which began in February after testing positive for the banned substance Furosemide the previous October. The player has always maintained his innocence, saying he’d mistaken his wife’s prescription medication for Asprin.

I looked up Furosemide and this is what Wikipedia says: Furosemide, sold under the brand name Lasix among others, is a loop diuretic medication used to treat fluid build-up due to heart failure, liver scarring, or kidney disease. It may also be used for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Not nice for his wife if she suffers from any of the above health issues.

What are the most common side effects?

Common side effects include feeling lightheaded with standing, ringing in the ears, and sensitivity to light. Potentially serious side effects include electrolyte abnormalities, low blood pressure, and hearing loss.

Why on earth would any sportsperson think taking Furosemide might enhance their performance? No one of sound mind would in my opinion so unless Onana is himself is not in the best of health, in which case I wouldn’t have thought he’d be playing football in the first place.

If a person is going to take such a risk to improve their game, I think they’d be taking something other than Furosemide. Fresh air, a healthy diet and exercise would be my advice…

Didn’t Kolo Toure once take his wife’s medication by accident? He served a six month ban I think so perhaps Onana will have at least have his reduced. Cut in half would be ideal if he’s heading to Arsenal.

See you in the comments.

    Morning Rico and all
If Onana does come to us I hope the medical team are on the ball when they check him and if in dealt fail him. The last thing we is a player to pass out during the match.

  2. rico says:

    Morning Geoff, all.

I’m sure any club, including his present one will be all over him. I’d have thought hos behaviour would have changed had he been taking this drug for a while.

  3. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning all,
Rico, the U.S. actually allows Lasix to be used on racehorses (I haven’t checked that now, but until a year or two back they did).
It helps prevent horses “bleeding” from the nostrils during races.
It’s banned in Oz-bleeders get a holiday the first time and banned for life the second.
It mustn’t impact badly on performance at a guess, but it does mask other issues, that’s for sure.

  4. Aussie Geoff says:

I glad for Saka as long as England don’t over play him as he needs a good break a head of a busy season to come.

  5. ScottfromOz says:

It’s hard to complain that Saka made the squad-even harder to argue the point lol
Like all Gooners, gee I wish he hadn’t.
A break would’ve been perfect for the lad.
At least ESR is having a break.

  6. ScottfromOz says:

    Rico, absolutely.
Oz racing is renowned as being as clean/drug free as anywhere, so the fact we ban its use says everything for me.
Even though it might not harm the athlete, it’s clearly masks something that can.
    Not good at all.

  7. Aussie Geoff says:

I have never heard of this drug / medication before but was wondering could a player take this to stop / prevent them self from getting a blood nose due to being to hot or is it more like some one getting cut during a match and not being able to stop the bleeding.

  8. ScottfromOz says:

Geoff, for a footballer, If used intentionally, I’d say it’s either to lose weight quickly, or to allow them to flush their system of other substances.
It makes you pass a lot of urine, so hypothetically, if I took drugs last night at a party and found out I was being drug tested tonight, I’d potentially use lasix, drink litres of water and hopefully flush all traces out of my system out before the test.

  9. rico says:

Agree Scott and the underlying issue can be huge.

The Americans do seem more ‘relaxed’ with some of the views/rules.

  10. ScottfromOz says:

    Rico, for sure.
The reason most countries ban that product in racing is if a horse is leading a race and haemorrhages, it can drop dead instantly and possibly have 12-16 horses behind it.
That’s why even a slight nose bleed after a ever incurs a suspension, followed by a life ban for a second occurrence.
Why it’s not banned in the U.S. is beyond me.
Anyway, if we sign the guy, we can only hope he did use it accidentally, or worst case, he has learned his lesson.

  11. Joaquim Moreira says:

I don’t think highly of Onana.
We need to renew the team in various sectors. Has anyone thought about Vitinha (Wolwes)?

  12. Devilgunner says:

Good afternoon everyone and thanks for post Rico

Furosemide is a masking agent. Which means that if taken traces of other drugs cant be found in urine. That is why its banned. Because a footballer or athlete can take any performance boosting drugs he can take take Furosemide which literally removes any traces of the PBD. For example the recent scandal involving the winning song of Eurovision where the Italian singer was accused of taking cocaine. He offered to take a test….safe in the knowledge that if he took Furosemide, traces of cocaine will not show in the urine test. So he would be clean.

The only way that both Furosemide and cocaine can be detected is through a blood test. Something which UEFA did failed to do on Onana. With all their lawyers etc, I am astounded why something as simple as this would have escaped them. Had they done a blood test on Onana they would have found whether or not he had taken other drugs. And much hassle would have been avoided.

  13. Devilgunner says:

Let’s say any goalkeeper took a drug which is high on caffeine, thus making him more alert and have better reflexes. He goes out, has the game of his life, saves the proverbial kitchen sink, cannon balls etc, and the minute the ref whistles full time takes the Furosemide pill. He goes around the pitch shaking hands with everyone, takes time to go to the dressing room and a few minutes later the pill begins having its own effect. He goes to the dressing room and then off for the urine test. The test is done and urine is sent for analysis. What happens is that no traces of PBD are shown but instead urine is full of furosemide.

That is why UEFA have banned that pill.

whether or not Onana took it we dont know. However, a simple blood test would have revealed everything.

  14. Devilgunner says:

What I find galling is that the club, Ajax, failed to stand by their keeper. He could not even train with them and if he had to make use of the gym he had to go when no players or coaching staff were there.

He was literally left alone and have to fend for himself.

Personally I would refuse to play for such a club ever. They just accepted everything they were told and did not contest anything. It was up to Onana himself to challenge the ban through CAS.

  15. Aussie Geoff says:

Scott thanks for that as I said I have not herd of this drug before.

I hope Onana is mentally strong because even if he is found not guilty there will all ways be opposition fans and some in the media that will still call him a drug cheat.

  16. Cicero says:

Surely it was a condition of his sentence that Onana could not train with his club, or use the facilities when they were in use by team-mates.

That being the case, no blame can be laid at the door of Ajax.

  17. Cicero says:

The statement was issued by Fabrizio Romana on twitter, today. Google it. Iv’e tried copy and paste, it don’t work.

  18. Aussie Geoff says:

For Ajax to dump him so easily the question is, are they just a club who don’t care and used it to dump him or had he done some thing similar and was warned and did not listen.

  19. rico says:

Airplane We’re heading to the Sunshine State! Smiling face with sunglasses

Flag of United States Florida, we’ll be touching down in July for the
    @Florida_Cup
    Trophy

  20. Rick says:

    Rico.
We fly to Orlando on 21st July andreturn 28th.
We play Milan on the 25th the same day that Everton play Millonarios (Clombo)

The winners of both games play in the Florida Cup final on wed 28th
The losers play on the same day.
In total we now have at least 6 First XL games before the start of the season
plenty for the youngsters to show what they can do.

  21. Devilgunner says:

Why shouldn’t he be allowed to train with his mates?? That seems so weird. Not playing at competitive level yes I agree. But not allowed to train with his mates is strange. And outdated imo.

Never knew that Toure was also banned from training as well. I thought it was only in competitive games he was banned.

I still say that Pope should be the answer seeing that Man Utd will not make Henderson available. Pope is a very good keeper and I feel he will excel at Arsenal.

  22. rico says:

We do Rick, I guess Kroenke will show up out there.

I’m looking forward to that one, especially see a few of the younger guys. Our future hopefully.

  23. Cicero says:

With the players at his disposal Southgate should be getting a good team together, but on the evidence of tonight’s game it’s just not happening.

Great goal by Saka, running from the halfway line and not giving up.

    Good night all.

  24. ScottfromOz says:

We have an Aussie Rugby League player making his comeback to the came on the weekend after 2 1/2 years out.
The reason, accusations of sexual assault against him.
Two jury trials couldn’t find him guilty and they’ve decided not to push forward with a 3rd.
Now, I can’t say he was innocent, but 2 1/2 years out of the game because of an accusation is ridiculous, imo.
If guilty, well, it would not have been an issue as he’d have been locked up but how can a code cast someone adrift because of an accusation?
Surely, the right thing would be to allow due process to take place and then make a decision.
Now, he’s free to go on his merry way but a comeback after 2 1/2 years out is tough going.

  25. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning all.
Interesting question sprung to mind just now.
All the talk of potential purchases for us, but what would ESR and Saka be worth atm?
Both young and just massively talented, and English, to boot.
    The mind boggles.
Now if Stan is as evil and money hungry as plenty (including yours truly) believe, would he be tempted to take an offer of 100 million each, or thereabouts?
If he is selling up soon but wants to really stick it to his critics (yours truly, again), then he could sell them, then sell the club leaving us in a right mess.
If we keep them, and he stays PLUS invests what he’s allowed to within FFP rules, I’ll happily take everything I’ve said back about him.
    Well, some of it 🙂
If we keep them and he sells up, even better.
    As always, interesting times ahead!!!

  26. rico says:

    Morning Scott, all.

I know I sound like a broken record but Stan Kroenke, as his son said, doesn’t decide who the club buys or sells, that’s down to Arteta, Edu etc. I believe all he does, again according to his son, is get involved with the ‘big decisions’ – which I take to mean managerial sackings etc etc. I also once read that he’s never denied a manager money to spend on transfers.

  27. ScottfromOz says:

Morning Rico, my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek with that post 🙂
More raising the question of what those two lads would be worth, not that I hope we find out lol

  28. rico says:

If a club offered £150m for either though Scott, I think Arsenal would have to think seriously about accepting it.

  29. Aussie Geoff says:

Rico if Stan claims he never has refused a manager money to spend then Arteta is laughing all he has to do is tell Stan I need 500 million pounds in the next 2 weeks to buy new players problem solved

  30. potter says:

According to the Daily Telegraph you might find out sooner than you would like. Amid rumours of Grealish being tapped up by Manchester City , Dean Smith is quoted as saying that he would want Smith-Rowe to replace him.

As much as I don’t think it will happen ,the ESR bit , it would bring a valuation into the foreground.

  31. rico says:

ESR has a contract until 2023 and there’s little to no chance of him not signing a new one imo. He’s an Arsenal boy through and through.

  32. ScottfromOz says:

    Rico, that’s true.
150 million can buy a few quality players!!
They’d have to be amongst the top 5-6 local youngsters in England, I’d have thought.
Potter, unless the offers are ridiculous, we really need to hold on to these two, but it’ll make for interesting viewing 🙂

  33. potter says:

I have no interest in selling ESR or Saka , in ESR’s case I have followed him for a few years and apart from his hair his play is so reminescent of Merson that I have been waiting for his breakthrough and now it’s here .
He and Saka are the family silver that we don’t contemplate selling under any circumstances.

  34. rico says:

Personally speaking, I Hope Saka and ESR, other younger Hale End players too who break into the first team, stay for their entire career. They are the ones we need to build around.

  35. Wavy says:

    Morning all

Didn’t one of the Kroenkes’ pull Nasri off a plane because citeh had offered £25.m and they were desperate for the cash? I think they’re as involved or not as they see fit, all the rest is smoke and mirrors. Oh and of course CASH!

At the time he was the only really decent player left sell. The demise continued unabated. And the rest is history. The mismanagement has been and still is shameful. I can’t see much changing in that regard in the near future. Arsenal football club is manacled by miserly, misanthropic millionaires who are only in it for the cash that AFC can generate for their already over extensive franchises and other businesses. Football? It ain’t football, it’s soccer all!

A bit cloudy here in every sense!

  36. ScottfromOz says:

Wavy, I saw an interview a few years back where Nasri himself stated that Arsene didn’t want to sell him, but was over ruled.
    Stan, Ivan?
    Who knows
The other story was someone above Arsene accepted a lowball fee for RVP, and when Arsene stepped in, the price went up.
    That came direct from Fergie.
I do wonder if we will ever find out the truth about that era.

  37. Cicero says:

“big descions only”. Selling a couple of players for £100 million each, rates as a big descion in any Kroenke’s book.

    ‘morning all.

  38. allezkev says:

Martinelli and Gabriel off to the Olympics with Brazil it seems therefore two more key players returning late to pre-season.

The opportunities are there this summer for all our best young players to really push their cases to be included in the senior squad this coming season and for them to save Arsenal from spending big bucks on new signings, who may or may not make any difference.

So the likes of Azeez, Cottrell, Ballard, Olayinka, John Jules, Cirjan, Balogun and McGuiness etc will not have a better chance to crack it as they have this summer.

  39. ScottfromOz says:

    Kev, bring on the youngsters!!!!
    They’re the future for us.
The talent is there, we’ve brought them this far so let’s see what they can do.

  40. allezkev says:

I’m all in favour of bringing on the youngsters Scott but I’m not sure that the majority of the rest of the fan base would actually share that view, not in this age, the age of online banter, there is precious little patience is there?

With Chelsea supporters crowing about a 2nd Champions League success would those Arsenal fans on the receiving end of the piss taking be content to see Arteta go with the youngsters if we lost a couple of early games? I doubt it.

And just imagine (God help us) if you was walking in the shoes of Mikel Arteta, with a sizeable proportion of that same self fan base wanting you out of the door, do you look to the future with the youngsters or do you go with the here and now and preserve your job?

It’s an impossible job Scott in fact I wonder if anyone can do it anymore?

  41. ScottfromOz says:

Kev, fwiw, I couldn’t possibly care less about those fans.
If they can’t accept a rebuild, and demand I stand success, they can change clubs.
Saying that, as long as it was made clear by the club we are going to give the kids every chance so everyone is clear on the plan.
It wouldn’t matter who were manager, many would complain imo.

  42. rico says:

I thought, at the time of Nasri leaving, ‘he was only chasing the money’ – He said differently, of course he did.

As for RvP, it was because of the way Gazidis and Wenger were ‘running’ the club, he quit. Regardless of how much we sold him for, he was leaving that summer.

  43. rico says:

Kev, had the level of football been better, I think those who want Arteta gone, probably wouldn’t right now. But some of his decisions, the team selection, signing Willian and selling Martinez, followed by some really awful football has gone against him.

I think a team full of super stars won’t change fans opinion of Arteta if the way the team play doesn’t improve, regardless of results.

  44. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, we all thought he was chasing the money.
    Every Arsenal fan alive did.
We could well have been wrong.
When we signed Podolski and Santi from memory, RVP asked to stay.
Too late was the answer, or so the story goes but again, will we ever find out exactly what’s happened in those times?
It would make a hell of a good read 🙂

  45. potter says:

I can’t remember if I have already said this a few weeks ago but Arsenal is the most followed football club on social media. Even the arsewipe Adrian Durham confessed that he only had to mention the club and his 4 hour radio talk show was innundated with callers and throughout the Wenger dismissal years he led the anti Arsenal narrative.
People are led by his ilk and like politics if you tell the same story day after day eventually it becomes the norm to believe it.
There are so many blogs out there and sites that all have their agendas and they have become anti Arsenal , anti Kroenke , and now anti Arteta and the more they spew their bile the more people will believe them. Now we have the aftv , Robbie and his cohort of complainants.
If you are listening to these programmes or reading them online it doesn’t take long to find the Spurs and Chelsea supporters sticking their oars in. Remember the opposition terraces singing Arsene Wenger we want you to stay whilst we were staggering to a defeat . It allc comes from the same source.
We are an easy target, we will get taunted by other clubs and as our history fades into the past our position as London’s premier club becomes harder to defend . We have won more F. A cups and more Domestic leagues but Chelsea are making a habit of winning the big ones in Europe beating us on their way and current form is on their side .
If we announce that we are going without too much investment and the kids are the only way forward we will be met with a bombardment of derision.
The average man in the street has been blinded by the Oil investment and money laundering clubs . They are winning things and we are not , which is all that matters in our world of instant gratification.

  46. ScottfromOz says:

    Well said, Potter.
I want it, and I want it now, no matter the consequences.
One factor is that while we’d love to see the local lads play a part, these kids really matter most to proper Football fans, and local fans.
The average overseas fan won’t have any more love for Saka than they would an equally talented kid from Russia or China.
Trophies is all they’re interested in.

  47. Aussie Geoff says:

If we play too many young kids and say 2 turn out to be good but we keep loosing will they stay or take the first big offer and leave for a club that wins

  48. Devilgunner says:

    Bendtner has announced his retirement.

Farewell Lord Bendtner….who scored with a header against the spuds after just 10 seconds of coming on.

    Good afternoon Rico and all

  49. rico says:

Scott, if overseas fans don’t care about the guys who come from the academy, one has to wonder why they bother to support the club in the first place.

Of all the League titles we won under Arsene, none of them beat 1989 at Anfield for me personally.

  50. ScottfromOz says:

Geoff, If they leave, let them go.
We want kids who want to help win our club trophies.
As Potter said, instant gratification is the way if the world today and that includes players.
Imagine every Arsenal player who left over the last decade to “win trophies” actually hung around and helped us build a top squad?
We’d have nearly matched it with any club in the world.
Though leaving to “win trophies” always managed to see them cop a massive pay hike.
    Funny that 😉

  51. Devilgunner says:

Next January and February….Obama?, Partey, Elneny, Pepe, Bissouma?, Auba, will all be off for at least 8 weeks. So it must be the youngsters who take their place. That is 6 players already.

  52. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, the Invincibles and that era is why plenty support the club.
Why is it Utd have so many fans around the world in their 20’s and 30’s?
City have stuff all but watch in 5-10 years time when these kids who are now growing up watching them win.
    Yes, Anfield is THE one.

  53. rico says:

Depends who Arsenal sign this summer though Devil. Plus, it could well be that many younger players are out on loan by January.

  54. rico says:

Arsene Wenger is the reason a lot of fans follow the club too Scott but sadly, they couldn’t recognise the decline under him, hence the good old AKB label thrown around.

Everything about the winning at Anfield was and always will be so very special.

  55. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, yes, though some is could see the signs of decline, yet wouldn’t sit back and accept the abuse and personal attacks on the man so naturally we were labelled AKb’s by the WOB’s 🙂
    Fun times lol
To be underdogs, to win in the last minute……..football perfection.

  56. Wavy says:

Sky showed the highlights a week or two ago. I recorded it and thoroughly enjoyed the game ……again. Notably I gave the game up with one minute to go. My last live look was McMahon signalling to his team mates ‘one to go, one to go’. So I went! (To the pub) five minutes away. As I walked in through the door the drinking chums applauded and asked how I was feeling? I didn’t know at that point that Thomas had scored the winner! It was one of those moments, especially in football, that you wish and bitterly regret leaving the ‘ground’ early in your eagerness for a pint or two of the amber nectar. Four pints later I was feeling a little more sanguine about my own lack of patience but, despite seeing the goal again and again subsequently, I have never experienced the adrenalin high of the actual moment. Sad.

    Ah me!

What a game, what a moment what a win. Wiltord’s goal at Man U was almost as good a decade or so later!

  57. Aussie Geoff says:

Hopefully we can get to see a few of the younger kids during our practice matches and rest our top players for the main season.

  58. potter says:

Anfield , unlike the other 500,000 people that I have met since that claim to have been there , I wasn’t . I was in my mother in laws house full of Fulham supporter swatching on the sofa . The only real difference is that I waited those 5 minutes before i left for the pub..

  59. Devilgunner says:

yesterday’s performance by Saka reminds me so much of Raheem Sterling. The way they turn with the ball, the way they run, the way they open up their body, their link up play and they way they go about the wings…..practically very similar.

Did any one else notice this??

I have a sneaky feeling that Sterling will come to Arsenal. If yes it will be Saka, Sterling, Pepe and Martinelli for the wings. And if, a wild dream I know, Grealish does come to us it will be au revoir to Nelson, Willian, Nketiah. I doubt it though, because Grealish would be near impossible. However stranger things have happened. In that case, It will be that one or both of Auba and LAca will go and Martinelli goes in attack.

    What a mouthwatering attacking dept……

Saka, Pepe, Sterling, ESR, Grealilsh, Martinelli, Willock.

    I can dream no??

  60. Devilgunner says:

I still remember where I was on that day in 89.

My Pa and I were in our sitting room watching the game live. And to cap it our neighbour was a dipper who had bored us to hell with his stereo of YNWA all day.

When Thomas scored the winner we made sure he heard our shouting and also fist banging the walls. And to rub it in I got out my stereo on the balcony and belting out We are the Champions by Queen…….at 23.00 hours. And we ended up with the police ringing our door bell telling us to stop. 😂😂😂😂

Oh well. I had to take the stereo in.

We continued to rub it in the next day…..I had a red Morris Marina back then. My dad had a white Lada. And we parked them in front of our neighbour’s house.

He did not talk to us for a whole month at least.

And every morning he woke up to Freddie Mercury’s voice.

Oh…..and we were in the same sitting room when we won the league title at Man Utd and also at the spuddies shit hole. But nothing beats that night at Anfield.

  61. Rick says:

    Afternoon Rico and the House.
The clear out has started for the firstXL and the academy
9 players at the moment more to come.

  62. Rick says:

    Kev
Kido Taylor Hart is one of 5 2nd year scholars offered professional contracts.
They left it late didn’t they Come on Kido I need chearing up
    sign the bloody contract.

  63. rico says:

I think Anfield wins it for me because it was the final day, at their place and a winner takes all game.

    Others came close though.. lol

  64. Cicero says:

Top for me will always be 1971. Winning the league at Totnumb on Monday night and the. FA Cup Final at Wembley on the Saturday afternoon. And as Max Boyce always said “I was there” , on both occasions.

  65. allezkev says:

Rick, I wonder if Arsenal will loan out one of our uncut diamonds to Portsmouth next season given that the managerial team of the Cowley brothers are in charge?

Tyreece John Jules, Lincoln City and more recently Emile Smith Rowe, Huddersfield Town, have been trusted to the Cowley Bros, so there is a connection.

Tim Akinola has also played for the Cowley’s when he was a Lincoln player…

Rick, getting Taylor Hart to sign is imperative because when he eventually gets a chance in the 1st team people are going to sit up, wonder where he came from and say “We’ve done it again, another Hale Ender”…

  66. allezkev says:

I’ve always had very fond memories for Copenhagen 1994, not least because we are so damn crap at winning european trophies.
