Mikel Arteta Car Crash! Learn and Move On………

Morning all.

We are very disappointed, especially with the first half. We know we are better than that. So in that sense we are gutted. But these things happen in football and it is our responsibility to turn that around and we have great opportunity on Wednesday night.

When the first goal went early you have to respond and ‘see out’ the next 10 or 15 minutes. We failed to do that and, credit to Liverpool, I thought they were brilliant and we were not up to scratch.

In the second half we knew we had to improve and I believe that we did that. So there are some mental positives today but we have to put it right on Wednesday.

Those are words from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

I guess he’s right in one sense, freak results like Saturdays are all part and parcel of football, especially when one entire team fails to show up and to be honest, that’s just what we did. It wasn’t a case of one or two not putting in a shift, it seemed to me, especially in the first half, everyone was still playing like they were still in bed waiting for the second alarm call to go off…

No excuses for Wednesday night though as we don’t kick-off until the evening, so there’s plenty of time to prepare both physically and mentally and be up for the challenge.

Mikel Arteta has also spoken:

It was like a car crash. The manager was really upset at half-time – that’s normal because it wasn’t good enough for this football club. It was the angriest I have seen him.

Good, I’m glad the manager was angry, he should be after a performance like that and now he has to use that anger and turn it into something positive.

We cannot afford another display like that this season.

It’s funny how just one defeat though turns us into a side which cannot compete any more. Just a few days ago we were top of the league and the media were saying we had a real chance to win the league, now though those same people have changed their mind.

At the end of the day we dropped 3 points and many of the clubs around us still have to face Liverpool at Anfield and they could easily suffer the same outcome.

No-one wrote Manchester City off when they were beaten at home by Chelsea, so there’s is no reason to believe we are out of this Premier League race just yet…

Respond well on Wednesday night and move on…..

That’s your lot for another day…..

Good morning lady of the house and all residents.
evryone is gutted, all we need now it turn it all around and make some people look stupid with their comments..
nice post mostly during this dark period…..
    thanks Rico

  2. ArsenalDK says:

Playing against the mancs is the perfect opportunity for us to raise moral. Breathing them would bring back belief. The game on wednesday is massive!

  3. rico says:

    Merts:

“To be honest, it’s one of the worst setbacks of this season,” the defender told Arsenal Player. “We feel very bad at the moment, disappointed with our performance right from the start.

“It was just not good enough to compete at that level. Liverpool seemed full of confidence. At the start we were eight points clear of Liverpool so we should have been more confident and more aware of the situation but that wasn’t the case.

“We have the opportunity to respond quickly on Wednesday and we have to remind ourselves what we have done from Man City until now. That is at stake and to show that responsibility for ourselves and for the pride our club.

“We have huge games coming up but we can rely on our fans that they will push us again. I think the team will give something back in the next couple of weeks.”

  4. bradster says:

    Morning fans,

I’m expecting the Mancs to step up against us. We need to watch out for Rooney.
I still don’t think we lost 3 points against Liverpool. If we got a draw I would’ve been happy.

  5. rico says:

And the old badger Bradster, he’ll be up for this one. Mata likes to score against us too..

Just have this sneaky feeling we will see a very different Arsenal tomorrow…

    Night Sean, go to sleep!

  6. Colin says:

I think Arsene Wenger needs to blame himself too. We have been sleepwalking to a defeat like this for sometime, and if it hadn’t been for Flamini’s hard work as a DM, we could have been smashed by Southampton too. After the Dortmund game teams recognised that we found it dificult to play our game if they pressed high and rushed us, and since then the better teams have used this tactic against us to great effect.
Second, since Cazola has been playing with Ozil our attack seems to have lost it’s pace and drive, I find it hard to remember a decent exchange between them, and an hardly remember Cazola passing to Ozil at all. The dynamic attack of the first Napoli and other first half of the season came when Ramsey, Ozil and Rosicky played together, with delightful one two’s between Ramsey and Ozil in and around the opposition’s box. Surely someone at Arsenal has noticed that this doesn’t happen anymore.
I don’t think we are a bad team at all, it just feels that with a few tweaks and a little more positive play we could be unstoppable again.

  7. mattyboy86 says:

Where was ozil? his attitude to recent is shocking… doesnt track back after HIS mistakes, doesnt defend and looks like he would be else where. The kid is pure lazy and should be dropped if you asked me.

  8. rico says:

Colin, agree re Tomas Rosicky, he is the one who makes the midfield/attack click as a unit..

I think we miss Flamini big time, not everyone on here agrees with that theory though but I think Arteta is too slow against the sides with pace…

  9. Scott from Oz says:

Matty, that is debatable, but plenty thought Jack was decent, yet i reckon his lack of tracking back killed us.

  10. rico says:

Fg, I read that article – what the writer doesn’t address though is we do have plenty of money which was generated by stinging the fans and selling our best players. All the time of course, pocketing much if not most of he money and failing to address the severe weaknesses within the squad.

Had the latter been addressed and rectified over the last 2/3 years, we’d be sat at the top of Everest already, having experienced and conquered the tough and challenging journey along the way….

  11. rico says:

I wouldn’t drop Ozil, never in a million years.

What I would do is organise/build a team to work around him, just as we should have done with Cesc..

But AW didn’t do that either….

  12. bradster says:

I just wonder where Moyes will play Mata. 4-4-2 he’ll be ineffectual. If in the number 10 role, where does he play Rooney?

  13. rico says:

Olympiakos are in talks to sign Joel Campbell…

I’m going to do a Ts here, I said at the time we should never have signed him…. 😉

  14. mattyboy86 says:

The difference there is jack isnt world class star (yet) who getting paid over 100k a week and plays with a poor attitude.. some do say jack wasnt up to scratch, however you got to bare in mind he was coming over a injury, but at least you could say jack played with passion. Ozil doesnt look committed in the slightest and it not just been the liverpool game you get to witness that!

  15. Fatgun-Ug says:

    thanks Rico,
just looked at the positives and didn’t want to look at -ves. my mood desperately needed uplifting…
at least our fans have worked so hard for where the club is right now, that is why we have arsenal in our blood and long may it continue until those that make decisions start investing reasonably in the squad.
am positive that day wil come and soon

  16. mattyboy86 says:

i would why would you playing ozil in the middle who hasnt gave anything to recent and pushing santi out to the left who most effective in the middle?

  17. mattyboy86 says:

Scott, i guess jack must of been in the Bahamas on leave and not nursing a ankle injury he got in training before the liverpool game then.

  18. rico says:

Worked hard and paid a lot of money Fg, and they are set to pay even more next season.. Financial expenditure cuts both ways and it’s about time the club started giving some of that money back in the way of signings and better performances…

matty, I’m not sure it’s as simple as one or the other. Our problem is we have too many players who play the same and not enough wide players or wingers so right now, something has to give. Ozil can play on the right but we aren’t giving him an option when he gets the ball.

For me that’s when his head goes down as he has to yet again play a sideways/backward pass…

He’s a ‘get the ball, head up and see who is in front of him to pick out with a pass’ – no-one…..

  19. rico says:

Jack got a knock a couple of weeks ago and missed a game or two didn’t he and AW said he was fully fit before the game.

He certainly didn’t look like he was injured… Up for a fight yes, but injured, not imo…

  20. Scott from Oz says:

Lol Matty, if we was not fit, why was he playing??
If he was underdone, are you seriousy suggesting it would have an effect straight away?
Funny, though i always thought players tire towards the END of a match, but not Jack, i guess.

  21. mattyboy86 says:

Rico – Ozil doenst play with passion and in his 1st year that is appauling. He looks like he doesnt even want to be there and this is my statement.. you cant say he has shown his worth since we’ve signed him surely? Arsenal as a team were shocking on sat but at least the other 10 play with a bit of passion.. Also even giroud a cm was back tracking doing defensive duties for the 2nd goal.. where was ozil in no mans land!

  22. Scott from Oz says:

I maintain the 3 players that worked hard were Giroud, Ox and Kozzer.
Nobody else gave 100% in my opinion….especially in defence.

  23. mattyboy86 says:

Scott, maybe cause we are desperate… or maybe Scott he didnt sign anyone in January window and our squad is thin might be a massive hint there! An ankle injury that has had a major impact on a players career over a two year period doesn’t get nurtured over night and i would bet my right arm he didnt go in that game 100% fit.

  24. rico says:

We’ll have to agree to differ matty. Ok, his body language isn’t the best but I think he’s frustrated with our tactics.

The problem is not with Ozil imho, it’s not making the most of summer/winter transfer windows to sign a couple of players who would have brought the best out of him..

Pires didn’t have the best first season, I’m not going to get on Ozil bandwagon just yet….

  25. rico says:

Giroud said he had a stinker Scott, but yes, he does always seem to try, just what he tries doesn’t come off often enough.

  26. Scott from Oz says:

Matty, he certainly showed plenty if dash with the ball, so how can you explain that?
I am not picking on Jack here, as he was one of many, but to take shots at Ozil when Jack did no better is wrong, IMO.

  27. mattyboy86 says:

That fair enough of course your entitled to your opinion.. but if i had spent £42mil on a super star making his 1st year debut in the PL the 1st thing i would expect from him would be a positive attitude and for me his stinks along with his performances and it too soon for him to being pulling off a balotelli in my eyes!

  28. rico says:

    🙂 Scott, I knew who you meant…

I knew what you meant by the way, and to be fair, he usually does work hard…

    I agree re a price tag, it’s irrelevant imho…

    Jenks is proof of that….

  29. mattyboy86 says:

Deep heat… works wonders! will leave it there scott as ive repeated a 100times already Jack was out for his ankle prior the game and my argument is jack played with a great attitude despite his performance to some.. where ozil didnt and doesnt and if i can see this, half of the arsenal fans on twitter and blogs along with the pundit who get paid to analyse players performances then i guess we must be all wrong on this 🙂

  30. mattyboy86 says:

exactly lol and his not giving everything… the same you wouldnt pay a manager in a business a high wage salary if he wasnt performing??

  31. Scott from Oz says:

Matty, in simple English, justify a player working hard with the ball, and bludging without it.
Injury or no injury, that is ridiculous.

  32. Scott from Oz says:

Matty, it is easy to be a smart arse because you have no logical response, but I can not remember once saying Ozil played well, so answer my question or continue to look silly…. Your call.

  33. mattyboy86 says:

Scott lol you went on about jack mate.. my argument was simply ozil performances and how he hasnt proved his worth. In simple English as you put it 🙂

  34. Scott from Oz says:

Keith, have you actually read any previous comments?
Ignore the facts all you like, but not a single person has said Ozil played well.
    Why is this so hard?

  35. Scott from Oz says:

A joke, Matty, but it was the closest thing to an attempt at a defence of your opinion.
I guess there is the joke.

  36. mattyboy86 says:

Thank you keith common sense mate and it doesnt cost a penny! cause you cant manage to grasp the concept of the debate thats why lol!!!

  37. stevepalmer1 says:

Morning all and nice one Rico,
I knew Wenger would have gone mental at half time and his team talk must have been worth listening to, but the players must have been shell shocked and his words was going in one ear and out the other. I would imagine that after the game the air must have been blue and hopfully when the Arsenal players left Liverpool his words would still have been ringing in their ears. Thinking that we can undo all that has gone before on Wednesday night, will be harder than we think, United have been playing very well but decisions they have always had in the past has been held back for some reason. I personally think that Arsenal FC is not liked by almost every pundit comentator and the media so i am not getting carried away that a bollocking by Wenger can get our team ticking like a Rolex, this game will be a hard match United have something to prove and what better team to do it against than a team who got thrashed on their last outing. United is a team of winners many of their players are used to winning, yes this first six month’s has not been up to their normal standards but with Red Nose bailing out and his influence with officials United have had a tough time. Players have been getting upset and little squabbles have started appearing but deep down Moyes knows that decisions are what its all about, and at the moment his clubs fortune is up to what they have to do on the field by themselves. Wednesday night is a fixture that could go either way, and its my opinion that United would fancy their chances more than our boys will, United will be after the win where our boys would settle for a draw, you may disagree with me but United are used to our games and being how they normally beat us they will expect that again. Arsenal can no more play different than they did Saturday as we have who we have, but they can show a bit more effort than they did, United will be ruthless they will attack as they always have, direct and fast, they will cross the ball at every oppotunity they get, and we will be pinned in our own half most of the game. United get back fast and they love to get physical and we will struggle to break them down. United at their best will defend well and the way we attack will let United form their wall, it will be tough, but not impossible. United’s confidence is low, nothing seems to be going for them and the frustration has started to sink in, but Arsenals confidence is not that high so its a bit of a mix and match. I think we will lose, but this is the best time to take them and show our worth.

  38. Scott from Oz says:

No, Keith, I am saying he, like about 7-8 of our guys, showed no urgency when off the ball, and that includes Jack.
I am saying it for probably the tenth time….you must have missed it each time lol

  39. mattyboy86 says:

Scott i wasnt going on about one performance!!! i said since we’ve signed him he hasnt shown his worth… what are you not getting?

  40. mattyboy86 says:

I dont think that was the context it was used in by your angry buddy… If so he could of at least put a ‘lol’ or something! 🙂

  41. Scott from Oz says:

Matty, so you were not being a smart arsenal with Bahaa comment?
    Grow up champ.
Stick on topic, use logic and no dramas.
    You are none for two.

  42. Keith says:

he lost possesion twice that led directly to goals and didnt bother to track or chase back!! dont remember jack doung that…..and at least it was visible that jack cared and almost got in trouble for being too passionate/petulant. Btw scott i think u confuse urself! lol

  43. rico says:

Good time to draw a line under the Ozil debate maybe??

Just agree to differ and hope Ozil shines against the Mancs…

  44. Scott from Oz says:

And Matty, your first input asked ” where was Ozil”.
Kind if hints at the fact you were talking about the Liverpool game, doesn’t it???
    Anyway, enough.
I am sick as a dog so maybe I can grab some that deep heat lol

  45. Scott from Oz says:

Rico, he will if he has some pacey options up front, I reckon.
We paid big dollars for him, so should use him the right way.

  46. mattyboy86 says:

so what if i was, i was putting a bit of humor in a debate that got heated… your not the blog sheriff pal! so Scott go and put your dummy back in pal and stop taking it personal… if you cant keep up with a debate or want to comment in on a individual opinion at least grasp it, seriously!

  47. Lewis says:

I was surprised by the performance on Saturday, but not sure why. We have been sauntering along of late, relying on one of our players to pop up and do something to win us some points. We haven’t dominated any of the ‘lesser’ teams and have been lucky on more than a few occasions. This result has been coming!

We had a chance to strengthen but instead we get some bullshit about how the winter window should be abolished and then sign someone with a broken back, you couldn’t write this stuff! I imagine that has had an effect on squad morale, they know our squad is thread bare, a bit of help would have boosted them.

Maybe I’m a doomer or maybe just a realist but I’m expecting our annual feb/march total collapse and out of all comps, anything to the contrary will be a bonus.

  48. Scott from Oz says:

Matty, I suggest you ask others if I was heated or not.
Cool, calm and collected and simply picked apart your comments…..you had the chance to explain but didn’t and that is fine.
    We move on.

  49. rico says:

That’s pretty much my view too Scott…

And just why AW made a great mistake in not signing that kind of player in the summer and again in January…

  50. W.A.T.H says:

Think we picking hairs when we moaning about one player or the other when basically the whole 10 outfield players on Saturday were utterly shit…!

We all know certain players are luxury players but I still expect effort even when your getting a good thumping. It’s as if we gave up after 54 seconds…! To be fair we not done that before this season so lets see if they respond on Wednesday.

As for Ozil’s worth, in what context do you judge worth when players get bought and sold for 50/60/80 million quid… Also his first season and remembering back wasn’t Pires pants for the best part of his first season? for me Ozil hasn’t been pants at all I think the bloke is quality whats missing is more quality around him and using him in the right area of the pitch… Still zero excuse for loosing the ball and not chasing back but as said he certainly wasn’t the only one guilty of that on Saturday.

  51. Lewis says:

No Matt, I don’t. But he does need time, I know with that price tag people expect immediate results, but the prem is a totally different animal to La Liga. He has shown flashes of brilliance but not consistently enough, as someone has pointed out we are not playing to his strengths, we need some pace up front. He has gone from supplying some of the best forwards on the planet to Giroud, it will take time for him to adapt.

  52. bradster says:

Personally I think Jack is naïve and needs to calm down to play better. Passion directed correctly is good for the team, getting hot headed and throwing tantrums on your ass is not passion nor good for the team. A worse ref could have let Wilshere have 2 yellows for decent and a bad tackle when he lost the ball.

Ozil for me was never what this team needed at the start of the season. I always called for a goal scoring number 10 ala Bergkamp.
Now that we have him, Wenger needs to either build a team around his way of play or he’ll seem rubbish, dishearted and lazy all the time.

I think moulding the team around Ozil benefits the team as he should be like Coutinho but we have no width or pace in attack.

So for the rest of the season Rosicky needs to play with him to allow him the passing option to go forward or drop Ozil.

  53. Scott from Oz says:

    Well said Waith and Lewis.
I am off guys, enjoy the banter. And play fair while the “Sheriff” is gone.
    Nothing personal, hey Matty lol

  54. mattyboy86 says:

Yeah ok and i understand that PL is a hard league to adapt too… but least show you want to be there… Giroud last year wasnt at his best.. however his work rate made up for that along with his body language.

  55. Lewis says:

Rico, we normally fall to bits and go out of all the comps in a 4-5 game spell and then pick ourselves up for the 4th place trophy. Lol.

  56. Lewis says:

Agreed, I would like to see more passion from him, but I want more from all of them.

Anything other than 3 points at home to the man a will not be good enough.

  57. W.A.T.H says:

Good point Brad but the fact we have no width or speed up front not only stifles Ozil it also hampers Santi…! Ozil gets the ball looks up and no one is available… same for Santi and then we go backwards and sideways and play those poxy useless 5 yard one two’s…!

Matty, Ozil is grumpy looking at the best of times, is it looking interested or just how he is, I’d get pissed off as well when I have no one to pass to and all i can do is keep going backwards or sideways because there is no attacking movement and off the ball runners…! As Brad says build the team round him.. put him where he can hurt the opposition but he needs pace and brains round him and grafters behind him..!

  58. W.A.T.H says:

The problem is after Sat Wenger says the players are intelligent enough to know what they did wrong, he’s said it for years… He says they don’t need motivating… I think that’s bollox…! They need a gigantic kick up the Arse… he needs to remind them the shirt they wearing and he also needs to take a long look in the mirror and admit his mistakes as well. How many more times will he make the same mistake over and over and not put it right…!?!?

  59. stevepalmer1 says:

I didn;t think i would ever say this but with theo’s pace missing up front we have started to move Crablike, we have very little pace in the side both up front and at the back so our midfield seem to be playing in defensive mode, When a team attack us or close us down quickly we pass sideways or backwards and what seems to be happening is that teams realise that they can swamp us. When this happens our midfield have had to hold onto the ball Arteta Ozil and the rest have started to go forward for lack of passing options and they are being picked off or robbed, that in itself has left us suseptical to a fast break, and that is the reason of our demise. Slow forwards and slow defenders is our problem. Ozil allthough he is class he is not a breaking through kind of player Arteta also, Jack tries but goes down at the slightest touch. In my mind we have two players that may get chances and they are Chamberlain and Gnabry both these players can see oppotunites and they will purge forwards, Just Lately 3 goals have come from Chamberlains runs Gnabry also has the same movement. Oliver is a work horse and a great holder of the ball but he has no forward runners so has to pass backwards. While Ramsey is injured i would play both these surging players and i would push them up.

  60. tsgh says:

    Good afternoon all…

”I’m going to do a Ts here, I said at the time we should never have signed him…. ;)”- Rico, I will get my CID bully friend to flash is plastic card to you next time for that comment… 😀

    Scottie, always negative… 😛

I agree WAth re.Ozil; he may look lethargic but his distance covered has not dropped according to stats so we can’t question is attitude imho…

As I ways say we lack intelligent players in the squad… the reason why Ozil plays better with TR07 and AR16 next to him with MA08 of course…

  61. W.A.T.H says:

Lewis, Am sure the players know they didn’t turn up on Saturday but if they are left to ponder where is the guidance where is the leadership….? The boss needs to ram it down their throats that commitment and effort and non negotiable but he’s the one who picks the team and the tactics and for that he needs to accept change. We have a team lacking grafters and physically strong players who can also play, still seems when the game is hard and tough we have way to many who go missing. We’ve all said we lack pace and width from day one of the season. We used to have a team that was lightning quick now we have 2/3 players only and one of those is out til next season. Use what you have and use it properly and if that means change of formation or tactics then Wenger needs to do it… fuck his pretty football principles it’s about getting results.

  62. W.A.T.H says:

Ts, having “clever” players next to you is one thing but Ozil needs “clever” players in front of him as well and we just don’t have any…!
Ox for me needs to be played up front or out wide he isn’t a midfielders arse in my opinion. We need his speed and direct running to attck the full backs and or centre backs so him and Gnabry need to be used more…! I’d also play Jenks n Gibbs in front of Sagna and Monreal Weds night to be different and give us more power down the wings going forward and as importantly to not leave the full backs exposed…! 2 up front solide in the centre if at all possible… Rosicky n Arteta…! Again no one else we can use as we all know Diaby should of been replaced 3 years ago…!

  63. AndrewH says:

Before the Pool game, I said to myself be reasonably happy if we can get 3 points from the next two league games. Still a good chance, but a bit more pressure to do it.

  64. AndrewH says:

I had hoped a draw away and a win. Never thought we would win, that would have been a bonus. Didn’t want to delude myself 😉

  65. AndrewH says:

Lewis, maybe Monreal as a DM? I don’t know, AW wouldn’t be that pro-active anyway. Our midfield better click from the off Weds. Blast, just looked, its on BT again! It’s worse when you cant watch it.

  66. bradster says:

I prefer that one Rico. Not so sure of Monreal’s discipline and positioning at DM. Especially against Rooney, he has the tendency to give away fouls and Rooney is deadly on the free kick just outside the box.

  67. ArsenalDK says:

According to Wenger and Arsenal.com, Sanogo has been back from injury for about 3 weeks already. Why is there no news about him?

  68. tsgh says:

typical crap from IG… time for him to do is promotion for season ticket renewal…

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis accepts it will be a “big summer” for the club in the transfer market.

  69. tsgh says:

ha ha ha- Moyes the clown: ‘Fulham centre-back Dan Burn says Manchester United’s tactics yesterday reminded him of facing Conference teams:’

Ribery is definitely out for the clash against us…

Kroos is being told to he is a squad player… AW should move for me pronto… he is better than most almost all our midfielders apart from the likes of AR16 and TR07 imo…

    Arsenal’s Premier League record v Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea & Liverpool since start of 2009/10: P37 W10 D9 L18 F43 A62

  70. Lewis says:

Kroos would be nice TS, That stat at the bottom says it all really!

That better read P38 W11 by the end of play Wednesday!!

  71. AndrewH says:

ts – “Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis accepts it will be a “big summer” for the club in the transfer market”

Oh dear. Usually when he’s that excited, we are about to sell a Fabregas or RVP and make a few bob 😉

  72. frednerk says:

Having beaten Liverpool quiet comfortably at home,
what was it that was different…………Surely not the dippers singing,

“Your never walk alone” or “The fields of Athenry”

Have I missed somethink with Monreal..is he the no:1 Left-back.

I have a thing about foreign players and away matches,
I think the Harris starts making buttons when the home fans get behind there team, and are then looking for leadership from someone/anyone.

A lot fans are digging Ozil out ..workrate/on the wing/not tracking back/looks tired/body language/too physical.

I think he was bought to be the cherry on the cake
    Not to carry the Water.

  73. AndrewH says:

If that’s the case fred, he will always look better when we are playing well and dictating. Although winning recently, we haven’t in all honesty been playing that well.

  74. rico says:

    Afternoon all..

I actually think the loss of Ramsey has made us suffer greatly, and Theo of course…

See Ts, I like Ramsey, you just assume I don’t 😉

  75. tsgh says:

Ozil not as bad as being proposed imho…

    First 5 months:
    Özil: 4 goals, 8 assists
    First full season:
    Coutinho: 3 goals, 5 assists
    Silva: 4 goals, 7 assists
    Mata: 6 goals, 13 assists
