Morning all.
Arsenal face Chelsea at The Emirates today, just a few days after we were royally thumped by Man City. So often in the past we’d be tempted to deflect such a defeat by dismissing the League Cup, or that the manager had played a second string team which is true of course, but the first team has been doing worse.
As far as injuries go, there’s still no return for Partey but Xhaka is available after suspension but Aubameyang is a doubt as is Martinelli.
Chelsea have Ziyech out injured and Chilwell along with James are both doubts. Recently, they have been beaten by both Wolves and Everton although they gave West Ham a 3-0 thumping on Monday night.
Mikel Arteta:
Things have to turn around. This is a crucial moment for us in the season and we have to do it this week. I’m really feeling for the players, and obviously for our fans because something is happening every game for different reasons. But we need results.
Mikel Arteta also acknowledged that the first two goals we conceded against City were soft. An understatement I think as I’ve seen Sunday League football teams defend better than Arsenal did on both occasions. Pub teams even. The one thing Mikel Arteta did improve during his first few months as coach was the defending, so much so that for a while, we had the meanest defence in the League. Where has that discipline and organised defending gone? The midfield pairing of Xhaka and Ceballos was kind of working, but now?
Ok, we weren’t scoring bucket loads of goals but nevertheless, we were scoring goals. The opening game of the season, we scored four but now, they are rare. The possession and ’creativity’ stats have improved but there’s no real end product. No urgency in and around the box or in the build up either.
We saw the difference Gabriel Martinelli’s style of football brought to the team, Arsenal need more of that. Mikel Arteta needs more of that if he wants us to stop this awful run.
As I keep saying, he’s has choices and he has options. ESR, Nelson and Balogun are just three of them. AMN is a must for this game I’d have thought because he is one of a handful who’ll give everything on the pitch for his manager. The other three would give us something different, something Frank Lampard won’t be expecting. How often did we on here say that a player like Giroud but with pace would be great? We have him in Balogun who could sign a deal with another club as early as next week if he’s not convinced his chances will come at Arsenal. Nelson might want to jump ship too because he isn’t getting any playing time but to replace him would cost millions. Why waste millions before his quality hasn’t been truly tested in the League. Pepe is proving to be an expensive disaster, William a free one who earns a lot of money for doing very little. Thank goodness they’ll be no Chelsea fans at The Emirates to ridicule that deal.
Arsenal have a handful of players who simply aren’t going to turn things around. I don’t want to go on some kind of witch-hunt but Willian hasn’t got the legs to get up and down the pitch all game and neither has Xhaka, Aubameyang seems as if he’s not interested anymore and Bellerin and Pepe playing on the same side of the pitch is a recipe for disaster as neither can defend particularly well. Pepe plays like he has lead in his boots as his legs just don’t seem to move very quickly. Yet Willian and Pepe are our attacking players, the ones who should in theory be making things happen. If a young Martinelli can put City’s defence under pressure each time he gets the ball why aren’t others others able to do the same? Simple answer, their hearts not in it. Simple solution, from my armchair, don’t play them.
Mikel is right when he says we’re at a crucial time and that we have to turn things around fast but I fear he’s putting his faith in the wrong players to achieve better results. And yes, Arsenal are at a stage where results matter more than performances because results will bring confidence, or at least I hope they will.
If we can get something out of today’s game then it’d be a positive result before heading into a string of fixtures which will either see us drop into the relegation places or begin a climb up the table. Or put some distance between ourselves and the bottom three at least.
It’s Boxing Day and Arsenal need to start fighting. Metaphorically speaking of course.
See you in the comments…
Got it by E -mail but not by the normal firefox system
G’day all, have the indigestion and hangovers subsided yet? I hope so. 😉
Todays referee, for a London derby, is Michael Oliver from Ashington Northumberland. That is 5 hr 15 min (300.0 miles) by road via A1(M) and M1. A ludicrous round trip of 10 hr 30 min (600.0 miles) at anytime, let alone when almost the entire country is in virtual lockdown.
https://www.premierleague.com/referees/index
Interesting site gives the refs how many matches , red cards , yellows and if you open each refs info where they come from .
It would be impossible to get someone local to ref this derby because there isn’t anybody from the London area The nearest is Graham Scott from Rico’s neck of the woods 50 odd miles away.
Hooper from Wiltshire and Marriner and Atwell come next from Birmingham all the rest are from well north of those.
Riley of course comes from Leeds and does seem to preside over a northern biased organisation
It doesn’t seem credible that the capital city with a population of over 9 miilion cannot supply 1 referee .
Anyway there you go . it doesnt seem like boxing day and I am bored.
Afternoon guys, well that’s the festivities over for another year.
Now to finish it off with a massive Christmas three points. Lol
Two London teams will always be officiated by a northern, midlands or extreme southern ref imo.
Interesting you post that Potter, I was listening to the commentary on the Utd v Leicester game, apparently both clubs top the table for penalty awards they said, as if it was something to be proud of.
I’d be wondering why they are, although I probably already know the answer.
Leno, Bellerin, Holding, Mari, Tierney, Xhaka, Elneny, Saka, Smith Rowe, Lacazette, Martinelli.
Slow internet. 😉

Looks like 4-4-2 smith-Rowe and Martinelli looks interesting
Didn’t Graham Scott officiate one of our recent games and was really good. You’re right Potter, he’s just up the road from me, in fact I could have popped in with a mince pie on my travels yesterday. Lol
Wonder what’s up with Gabriel. Mustafi ahead of Luiz in the subs department. Has Mikel finally seen the light. Lol
Evening Rico and All
Amazing how every team we play seem
to get all the players back for us.
Arseblog.
Back in June, we relayed news of Arsenal’s interest in PSG physio Bruno Mazziotti.
It’s taken six months, but, judging by his bio on Instagram, the Brazilian has now joined the club’s medical team.
Mazziotti crossed paths with Edu at both Corinthians and the Brazil national team set-up and moves to London having spent two seasons at the Parc des Princes.
It’s not clear at this point what title Mazziotti holds. In August, the Gunners confirmed that Jordan Reece, previously head of academy physiotherapy, had taken on Chris Morgan’s duties after our former head physiotherapist returned to Liverpool.
Given Mazziotti’s previous experience, we expect to see him involved with the first team. Look out for a burly bearded bloke on the bench when we face Chelsea later this evening.
According to The Athletic’s [£] David Ornstein, the Gunners have further bolstered the medical team with Bournemouth’s first-team physio Nick Court.
Gabriel’s absences is Covid related. Probably after Jesus and Walker tested positive at City.
No william in the squad. No luiz either,
Mari needs to be very careful..
Oliver not giving many decisions our way. What a surprise that is. Not!
Evening, couldn’t get on earlier on phone, ok on tablet now. Always knew Xhaka was there for something! Why has it taken so long for a shot like that, when he first came he was known for it!
Best first half from Arsenal in ages. What a difference a bit of young blood makes.
And then we are gifted a penalty which Lacazette calmly converts. Not only that but Saka wins a free kick which Xhaka las into the top corner.
We need to maintain the momentum in the second half.
C’mon Arsenal.
Xhaka’s free kick was superb but some of his passes have been really good too.
The audacity… 😂😂
Squeaky bum time…
Leno you star..
👏👏👏 Arsenal, excellent performance. I really hope Mikel doesn’t forget who won that game for him. Imo, today showed that youth and energy works so much better.
As Mr. Punch used to say “That’s the way to do it” 😉
🙂
Finnally !!!!
Mari could be sent off…
Just for one day ………. we have our Arsenal back😃
I wanted ESR and Martinelli bought back on . Willock and Pepe came on and the intensity dropped and Chelsea got into it . They scored and our bottle started wobbling
Felt the same after the changes.
Morning all.
These kids will be in and out of the starting 11 for a while yet and I think that’s the right way forward.
They’re the future but they need to be handled well and not thrown to the wolves week in, week out.
They certainly did show up their more experienced team mates!!!
The future is bright guys.
Evening Rico and All
Have to say one thing sorry 2 things
well done to all you guys who have puttered Smith Rowe I haven’t seen that performance from him loved his link play but I was very impressed Hackneygazette he showed leadership.
Evening Fred. Best game from Lacazette in a while I reckon. I know this sounds stupid but he looked happy. Maybe because of the energy around him.
They did Scott, and in a big way. Just hope Mikel doesn’t ditch them for the next game or as soon as Willian is fit.
Rico,
Same here.
Let the “stars” play in Europe until they prove themselves again.
But we want to win the Europa League Cup Scott..
Hurrah!
I can wake up happy tomorrow and even the day after, long may it continue. Perhaps we could now go on a long winning streak, having learned how to win again.
Good game .good result.
It proves we are capable of beating teams with a bit of
luck, fans have to be savie,We are big club teams want
to beat us,The Chaves turned up ..Thats all
Anyway Gloat you Gooners.
Hahahaha, that’s True Rico lol
I think we can say a collective “ I told you so “.
The introduction of younger , faster more energetic players and hey presto
Sometimes you need a bit of luck, you know the fickle finger of fate pointing at you and saying ‘yeah it’s time you had some good luck’ and that seems to be the case after today’s game.
According to MotD both Luiz and Willian are injured and of course Gabriel is in isolation, this it seems forced the hand of Arteta, it wasn’t some inspired squad selection by our manager.
And this is where the luck comes in because it seems as if Arteta stumbled upon this particular line up and with that in mind I guess we’ll know for sure when we visit our Jonah ground the Amex next time around especially if either or both of the terrible twins return to the squad?
After today’s display I think that it would be stupidly in the extreme if Arteta changed the starting XI and even the subs bench. These guys have put in a shift and maybe turned this season around and thoroughly deserve to retain their places in the squad.
Of course Graham Potter will have a plan for Arsenal as he always seems to have, but Arteta must keep faith with these players because he needs a run of good results now and fiddling with a winning squad could only end up seeing him kicked in the gonads.
Hi Rico and all finally enjoyed watching us play, and the win made it even better.
Lets hope they keep playing like this and don’t stop after the January transfer market.
Good morning all.
It must be clear to Arteta that Aubameyang and Willian bring very little to the table.
The future of the club lies in the hands of the youngsters, who bring energy, enthusiasm and fearlessness rather than the lethargy, carelessness and staleness of the older highly paid players.
Morning all.
Let’s not pretend that this was a fluke.
Equally, let’s not pretend this is the start of things to come.
We have a long way to go, and we will have lots of poor results before we find some consistency .
For me, the main thing is that we saw exactly how good we can be so that gives us plenty to look forward to.
It’s funny how fate helps, if Willian and Luiz had been available at least one, maybe both would probably have played. We were so much better without them.
I saw that Gabriel had a birthday party last week with several guests. Pretty dumb if true.
I hope Arteta makes use of other young players like AMN, Nelson and Balogan moving forward.
Good morning rico and the House.
Such a lovely feeling to wake up after a thoroughly deserved Arsenal win. It has felt like an age.
I’m with Scott, in the fact that we will have more disappointing results in the near future, but with performances like this, we can be optimistic of escaping the dreaded bottom three.
I’m not with him on the fluke aspect, as I thought we were the dominant team mostly throughout, certainly up to the substitutions of both Martinelli and ESR.
It’s an ominous sign how well we played without Aubameyang…….Is he going to turn into another Ozil situation ?
However well we played, Arteta has still a lot of work to do in clearing deadwood out of this club.
Onwards and upwards Gooners.
Morning Vcc, all.
I couldn’t agree more, that win was no fluke. However, if the only reason ESR played was because Covid kept Willian out, that’s a red flag imo. Willian’s performances should have been the reason he was left out. Same with Luiz.
New post up now
