Morning all.

Panto arrived early yesterday afternoon and didn’t we all love it?

Is there a player more deserving of his two goals than Olivier Giroud right now?

Since the beginning of the season he’s held the front line on his own, yet sometimes it’s others who chip in with the goals but yesterday, the day was his. Β Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care who scores our goals but at the end of the season, strikers can often be judged on how many goals they score. The work he puts in each week is incredible, not only up front either as he’s often found at the back helping our defenders out. Giroud is a top class professional and he’s on the way to being a world class player. Yes, I really like him.

His first was a bit of a gift after Boruc decided to try some fancy footwork instead of simply clearing the ball but credit has to go to our big Frenchman for being there, pressurising the keeper and slotting the ball home. Many strikers would have been tempted to turn away believing that the ball would be cleared but not our man…..

Prior to that, both Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere saw efforts saved by the woodwork.Β Aaron Ramsey won the ball on the edge of the penalty area and his pass fell into theΒ path of Wilshere on the right. His little chip over Boruc from an impossible angle, hit the far post and rebounded straight into the hands of the keeper.

Five minutes later, Mesut Ozil played one of his perfect crosses toΒ Ramsey, his crafty little flick backwards looked like it was heading for goal but again, woodwork saved the away side from going behind.

Both attempts were cheeky and very clever, both attempts were very nearly perfect and had they found the back of the net, the footballing world would be purring this morning.

Then came that Giroud goal……

Southampton were far from fazed by us scoring, in fact soon after, Szczesny tipped a fierce volley from Lallana over the bar and our Pole, who yesterday was far better than their Pole, made another fine save soon after, this time the shot was from Rodriguez.

The break came and went….

Lallana had another chance very early in the second half but thankfully, he fired straight at Szczesny. We weren’t having things all our own way by far and at 1-0, the game was far from won.

Both Ozil and Wilshere had a chance on goal, the German shot straight at Boruc and Wilshere couldn’t get enough on his header to beat him either…

Fifteen minutes before the end, Arteta went off, for what reason I don’t know but if he’s injured, it’s a good job we have Flamini available for Tuesday. Tomas Rosicky came on in his place and just prior to that, Theo Walcott came on for Santi Cazorla.

Southampton tried desperately for an equaliser but our defence stood strong. Very strong.

Theo Walcott had a chance with about ten minutes left, but his shot went wide of the post. He’s been out for a couple of months so hopefully he won’t get too much of a battering for that miss. ( Yes, I mean you Sp! πŸ˜‰ )

The game was drawing to a close and my nerves were being tested but then Jose Fonte did us all a favour by pulling the shirt of Per Mertesacker who was up for our corner. Clattenburg had no doubt in his mind as he pointed to the penalty spot.

Mesut Ozil, who is our 2nd choice penalty taker stood aside as Olivier Giroud made sure that all 3 points were staying in the capital…

I said yesterday that Southampton were sitting in 3rd place for a reason and during that game it was clear to see why. They aren’t the Southampton of years gone by, a side who turn up to be rolled over with ease.

They are organised, determined, physical and they have a squad full of players who may not be the most known, but boy do they give their all for the club. Within the team they have players with flair and that desire/passion which we all so often hear our own manager talk about.

Southampton aren’t a side who have had a lucky start either, they are 3rd because they utterly deserve to be.

Were we poor? I think sometimes it’s all to simple to suggest when we have been given a tough afternoon.Β My own view is that we faced a very good side, one who in my opinion will still be somewhere near the top in May.

Three points yesterday were earned, hard earned so credit where it’s due I say. We lost our last game at Old Trafford and we then had everyone away on International duty during the break, so to come back, regroup and secure three points to stay top of the league, was a very good afternoons work in my opinion.

As for Southampton, I hope they go on and continue to beat a few more of the so called better sides this season…..

They certainly deserve to.

I’ll leave you to pick the bones out of the game…

If you really want to or feel the need to……

That’s it for another day, have a good one.
