Does Arsene Wenger deserve more praise than he gets?

Morning all.

After the draw at home against Spurz, the loss to West Brom and a draw with Norwich away, a game in which I used my bet365 bonus code for new customers, the question ‘Wenger in/Wenger out’ is again being raised on a regular basis.

Should he go?

I’d suggest the balance of opinion is slightly tipped on the scales towards ‘yes’.

On here, other forums and various Facebook pages, I could not possibly count the number of people who perhaps at times, contradict themselves when offering reasons why he should go. Two major arguments are invariably used by those wanting him gone.

Each in it’s own right is a fair point, but when people use both, the contradiction becomes apparent.

Point 1 is ‘Wenger won’t spend, and therefore our squad is always lacking depth and overall class’.

Point 2, which is more a question people ask aloud, is ‘imagine what a top manager would do with our squad’.

Without placing too much emphasis on the fact we are 2nd and just 2 points off top spot without signing a single first team outfield player in the summer, it’s worth mentioning that other clubs who as always, spent a small fortune, are below us. Some more so than others. 🙂

Leicester, who sit above us wouldn’t have spent an awful lot I’d imagine, so the two clubs which didn’t go overboard in the summer are at the top of the table.

Anyway, back to the contradictions.

‘A top manager would succeed with the terrific squad Wenger has assembled.’
‘Our squad is not good enough, and not deep enough.’

It makes you think, well it does me.

Someone whose opinion must be respected, if not enjoyed or even agreed with, is Alex Ferguson, who asked a few months back ‘which other manager in world football could do a better job than Wenger’?

No doubt they’ll be plenty of differing opinions on Fergie’s comments but it’s hard for me to simply dismiss his view.

I’m not for one second suggesting Wenger was right by not strengthening during the summer, quite the contrary, he clearly lost his code for new players, but the flip side is, if our squad is not good enough and not deep enough, shouldn’t he be getting recognition for the fact we are in second spot?

Seems not as the general consensus is that Arsene Wenger should have signed more players back in the summer and had he done so, we could very well be six points clear at the top and flying high. While I agree re the signing of outfield players in the summer, that’s not the really the point I’m trying to make.

If the squad is no that bad then surely he’s a genius. If the squad is good, then he’s doing a half decent job.

You can’t have it both ways, although many seem to.

PS…..I still say him retiring on a high after last years Cup Final would have been simply perfect… 🙂

Having written that, Scott is off to find his tin hat……

Wengers problem is that he does have a deep squad, but a lot of those players are injury prone. It is idiocy to think that Wilshere, Walcott, Gibbs, Chamberlain, Ramsey, Rosicky, and Arteta would not have a period of time on the treatment table. He needed to be ruthless in the summer and get rid of some of those, but he wasn’t and now we are where we are because of his (yet again) bungled transfer business.

No……..

Good thought-provoking post, morning!

Point one, totally agree, so much so that its boring repeating it, but it wont go away and I will carry on believing it.

Point two, totally disagree. Squad is always two to three players short of a title-winning one and cant see another manager doing better.

However good AW is in some aspects, and I actually feel he over-achieves getting us 4th every year, he shoots himself in the foot time and time again. So that is not genius. A Dein (or similar)/Wenger partnership might be closer.

Nice one Scott. Finally a debate in the house. Some people (me too) think the stick he’s getting is because of his own undoing. Sadly we are living in a lifetime where success and winning is glorified and Wenger is not on the winning side.

Problem is he’s not getting the respect he deserves. I recall even when SAF was having those rare bad times, he was still respected. We may not like him but atleast give him the respect he deserves, he got us here- financially stable and a decent squad.

I am in the he should have strengthened camp, had we done that WBA and Norwich wouldn’t have crawled back into the game after us going ahead… even the Sunderland game.

You’re welcomed Scott.

Goonster, true Wenger lied- still slate him for that and the stringent transfers, and player management has been his downfall. Wenger likes to do things the right way, we all hear a so and so player could’ve been signed yet it never happened, part of it could be he’s never a go getter and part is he wants to get players in the right way. (i read some clubs pay agents insane money to coerce players to join their clubs).

He has his dark side, but there’s more good than bad. Look at how we play, we don’t have divers, cheats and thugs in our club. We play beautifully, he teaches players to be professional and be gentlemen as well. AW deserves recognition for that.

i hope after he retires he writes a book, and explains in all honesty how he did his transfers, till then we’ll never know what happened.

Marshall

True rico and goonster, Wenger sentiments towards some players sometimes is the source of his downfall. Now he’s sticking to like of Per and MA. i don’t know what he promised them after they were quickly signed after 8-2 thrashing but it would be a good time if he let them go. AW should be a manager first and a friend later, this the problem imo that we see injury prone and lots of squad members in our team, instead of actual first team competitors.

Wavy

I’m on the fence!
On the one hand I think he should have bought a couple in, but on the other hand I understand why he didn’t. He thought he “had enough.”
I feel he thought his squad was talented and sufficiently good and available to compete with the rich kids. Crucially, he wasn’t going to spend, spend, spend to achieve his EPL and CL ambitions, á la Chavski or shitty or manure et al. Furthermore he felt his squad was double covered, eg two players for every position plus several utility players who he could play in any position, if necessary! Well, with the exception of DM, CF, and CD of course!
His dilemma was if he went out and bought any of the above mentioned he would, unquestionably have upset his current first teasers, who would see their place in the team jeopardised by the newbies! Team spirit is not an easy friend when competition and jealousy or envy is rife amongst the staff! (Look at Debuchy, not a happy bunny, and who can blame him?).
What he didn’t factor in, as many have said already, was the enormous list of players on the ‘sick’! Having got rid of Diaby he thought his troubles were a thing of the past! How wrong was he?
So, the reason there is a general clamour surrounding his future, as a result of his seeming inertia, he could not have envisaged what has happened, although most of the remainder of the squad, the current ‘first team’ are of a good enough quality to win prizes, and points mean prizes!
So, here I am having nailed both legs to the fence! He had a good squad, when they were all fit, but could have found a couple of extre legs as stocking fillers, whom he could use at times of crisis, except of course he already had players on the books of that type, in the form of Arteta and Flamini, so why buy more?etc, etc

scottfromoz

So you’ve learnt the lesson after 5, Adam…better late than never Hahahaha.
Stan, what if we are about to offer Alexis and Ozil new bumper contracts….there’s a decent joke in the kitty.

It’s just a theory, but what if?

Stan, that 8-2 is the most over hyped, needlessly stress causing game in history, IMO.
We had more shots on goal, missed a penalty and a sitter, Young scored goals he never would in a million years and they copped a ridiculous penalty.
We should have led easily at half time.
That result was a myth for mine.

I think regardless of what argument you follow re Wenger, one thing is clear: we’ve been here before.

We never looked like winning the league last season as the team, yet again, could not cope with injuries and loss of form or fatigue to key players.

On that backdrop, not strengthening last summer sufficiently with a mountain of cash eclipsing the Emirates, was simply preposterous to say the least.

The inevitable injury-laden winter has hit and our great manager has not planned for the big chill. It’s really tiresome actually. I’m completely bored of repeating myself for 6 years.

This is what will happen. This injury period will cost us long-term re the title race bc I can’t see us surviving this number of absentees. We will go on a run later in the season but just fall short. A glorious failure moment where we lambast injuries and praise Wenger for even challenging.

That’s the positive scenario. Knowing Arsenal as well as I have….I expect a massive meltdown and Wenger out brigades after the January window when he brings in inadequate players if any.

The writing is on the wall.

Rico, I agree re the DM but for the rest I do believe he thought he had enough. He hasn’t, of course, but the club has been really unfortunate with so many injuries, or do the conspiracy theorists have a case?

Incidentally, AFC have sent out a tweet :

Arsenal tribute to legendary fan
Football
Posted at 12:05
Arsenal have paid tribute to a “legendary” 90-year-old fan of the club, Ernie Crouch, who died after he was blown by the wind against a bus in north London on his way to Saturday’s match with Sunderland.

Arsenal tweeted: “Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong fan Ernie Crouch. May he rest in peace.”

According to fans on social media, he had supported Arsenal since 1934.

At least they have acknowledged his passing, whether they’ll do more, who knows? It would be a fitting tribute if they marked it in some more tangible way, a minutes silence or applause in recognition of a life dedicated to ‘his club’. Extraordinary.

On Ozil, shows how thin our squad really is. I wouldn’t count on JW cause he’s always a nick away back to treatment bay. Does anybody actually want to win the title this season? And if so who?

I think this bloke James Whaling opinion in Mirror is much reasonable than the other writer’s opinions as excerpted:

“I’ve never known a season be quite so open – and it is great for the neutral.
It isn’t a case of teams not wanting to win the title, but each side has fundamental flaws which are contributing towards their inconsistencies. It could be a record low amount of points to take glory in May.”

Hmmm…interesting.

Wavy. Isn’t that Walthamstow? Not far from here. And I eat in Station Road, Chingford E4 quite often.
Please send her straight down. 🙂

Right on both counts.
Last time I went through E4, Station Road was largely charity shops, eateries and estate agents! Where have all the shops gone?

Adam

Wavy. Opposite the bus station is a lovely little Thai called Patpong. That end is full of restaurants but the rest is as you say. Walthamstow is undergoing something of a gentrification.
Hard to believe I know. House prices in Chingford are mental.

Adam,

maybe, these players wages is beyond belief eh…

maybe I could work my arse off till my retirement just to match 3 months wages of Wilshere or ramsey, and they are even work on daily basis match, but mostly in crocked center room.

Afternoon all.

I would rather break Wenger’s in half. The first half at Highbury, the presence in the side, the board and most of all the trophies. The second half at The Emirates and all that entailed, new majority share holder, selling our best players and yet keeping us in the top 4, yet the last three years there has been gradually more and more money, many buys haven’t worked ot, we have generally no real physical presence and no leader.
Wenger wanted a replica of Barcelona but it was never going to happen. Now he stumbled on Coqulin and brought him back by default but the world and it’s dog knew what we needed in the Summer and at a minimum all we got was Cech.
We are a top club but as many of us think and know,we aren’t consistent, haven’t been for years and Wenger must take a good proportion of the blame and he has aged and too an extent the game is passing him by and he is too set in his ways.
Support I always will, but my expectations for the time being remain low .Amen 😉

The more money that’s pumped into the PL the more it costs the fans and the worse the football gets. If I could be bothered I would produce a detailed graph and publish it here to be ridiculed.

That was very close to where I lived, almost next to the Plain. Before I left the were more than several tea rooms and restaurants that had opened up in the stretch from the post office to the bus terminus, well, Station. A nd Roy King,s sports shop! Next to the building that housed Chingford Golf Club . Ah happy days!

Kelsey mate,

maybe Xhaka-Le Coq pairing will add the physical presence for our play.

Interesting duo IMO, remind me a little bit of Petit-Viera.

Xhaka and Aubameyang for this jan window, please Ze arsene, pretty please?

Currently I would like him to retire gracefully simply because of his clear inability to see inherent weaknesses in his squad. For the past 3 summers we have not bought the players we needed. Starting last season with just 2 experienced CB’s was insane and predictably resulted in us dropping too many points before we could rectify the issue in January. He knew before the previous season ended that we would lose both TV and Sagna, yet he failed to replace them properly. Debuchy had never played CB so Chambers, with 13 EPL games, mostly at RB, was our 3rd choice CB.
Arsene has still not addressed the DM situation as he was forced to try Le Coq and he still considers the failed experiments of Arteta and Flamini at DM as good enough. Saturdays game should be a wake up call for Arsene because what I saw was the same Arsenal pre Le Coq. Ramsey (or Jack) charging up-field with no consideration for defence, leaving a slow Flamini (or Arteta) to get by passed with ease.
Arsene cost us a serious shot at the title last season and could very possibly do the same this time because of his refusal to buy another defensively minded midfielder. Quite honestly if we don’t win the league this season he has to go.
As to who replaces him, well there you have me. I wanted Klopp but we missed that boat. Pep is not an option as he said he isn’t looking for a long term project. The only thing I can say with any certainty is it won’t be Maureen.

Allan, you’re right.

This season is a must or a bust for arsene.

Next season would be another major overhaul with the likes coming of:

– Pep to Man City

– Carlo to Man utd,

and Klopp with liverpool….

can you imagine the chances with the same old stubborn wenger odds compared to those mentioned above?

good grief.

Adam
Adam

Allan. I find it hard to argue with a lot of that. The positive side is that he has bought some good or even great players but he probably hasn’t bought enough of them, or at the right time.

With our injured players back we have a strong squad.. We just have to stay with the pack until January then buy that dm and possible strike <not so sure we will buy a striker thou.. . Front three of welbeck walcott/giroud sanchez is not bad thou.

I reckon it’s the mud from the nearby River Thames oozing outward, through the ground, yet being filtered by the limestone deposits from the Thames basin, rendering the black stuff invisible to the naked eye. Then, while being blasted in the iron to the super-heated temperature of a Red dwarf it reacts with the aluminium water chamber within the device and the gunk coalesces through some obscure form of osmosis into the very substance that is an unwanted by product of the whole ironing process Rico.
