Defender deal done, Offer made for international midfielder and another being discussed.

Morning All,

Today’s gossip…..

Well it seems Dubuchy is a done deal, well depending on if you believe the papers and the fact fee agreed to having a medical shortly is a done deal. Dubuchy in my mind is pretty decent and knows the premier league. He’s a few years younger than Sagna but not that young that he’ll maybe get in the way of the progress of Bellerin and Jenks. I don’t go along with anyone stopping a players progress, in my view if a player is good enough they will improve and then you play your best player simple as that, the cream always rises so they say. If a player gets dropped and is deemed 2nd fiddle if they don’t like it and don’t want to fight for their place then leave…!

There are now quite a few rumours saying we have made an offer for Sami Khedira in teh region of 20million pounds…. Other stories are saying Morgan Schneiderlin has told team mates that he will not be playing for the Saints next season and that Arsenal are not looking to discuss a deal possibly as well we’re interested in Lovren but I really cant see us paying 20million for him. For me as said before I’d prefer Schneiderlin but either player would be good for us and give us more bite and physicality in central midfield.

A brief post from AllezKev….

You see them everywhere at the moment, Striding around London bold as brass in their bright yellow shirts. The nearest to South America most of them have been has been to a Zumba dance class.

They used to be lifelong hardcore fans of Manchester United via the armchair and TV remote of course.
It now seems they are fans of Brazil. Neve rmind where they come from their nondescript lives draw them to the gold shirt of Brazil.
No room for a little bit of imagination or making up their own minds as they could have supported Uruguay, Chile, Mexico or even Costa Rica but no they’d rather follow the trend and be sheep…. Go with the flow, be glory hunters…! Having a mind of their own just wouldn’t do it.

We used to see them striding around proudly displaying their Barcalona shirts but all those red & blue favours are hiding in the back of their wardrobe alongside the Man Yoo shirt hat and underpants…

Thankfully for them Brazil are here to save the day.

It takes a bit if character to support a team that doesn’t win all the time.

I always enjoy chatting to the fans of the less glamorous clubs. As soon as someone says they support Man Utd my interest in anything they have to say just disappears and then you hear the lifelong fan crap and just know they were liverpool fans ten years ago…!

Many of our fantastic overseas fans are drawn to the Arsenal for their skillful play and the way the club conducts itself as opposed to those Petro-Dollar artificial teams. Arsene Wenger also attracts many fans from across the globe for his decency and the way he tries to run the club in the correct manner.
Winning trophies isn’t the be all and end all for these fans (although the odd trophy is nice).

For these johnny come lately Brazil fans who have been recently drawn to Man City after a brief affair with Chelsea they need to be associated with a big team… A team they see as winner and being popular it matters not to have an opinion and support a team because of a reason or a personal connection with that team. They always want to try and back the winners, the champions, the CL winners……. Plastic fans ain’t worth a hoot..!

Me? I’m supporting anybody other than Brazil or Argentina.

Morning all. Very good point about the Brazilian shirts Kev! Although there is a chap in my local pub (mid thirties) who has worn the yellow shirt for years and years and said he has since he was 8 years old! So I’ll let him off.

How about that ref? Give Brazil a helping hand? Anything goes, so in the end both teams got away with lunges that should all have been bookings. Then hilariously, Rodriguez gets a yellow after all the punishment he has taken. Just read Neymar out, not condoning that knee, but after what ref was allowing Brazil to do, its no wonder something like that happened.

James is a very very good player imo.i had not seen much of him before the worldcup but boy he has it.What i liked more is that despite being kicked all over the park by the Brazilians he never shyed away from the ball.that boy has massive cojones.he has character as Wenger puts it.I’ll keep a close eye on his development from now on.

I hope Wenger will get the quality players to strengthen Arsenal. At the same time he has to look at his tactics. He likes to play a predictable short passing game which can be easily stifled as France were in their match against Germany.
The Germans were quick in their attack and came back asap in numbers to nullify the French attack which was slow and predictable like Arsenal.
Hopefully next season Arsenal will be less predictable.

I am sad for Neymar,I truly am.this opportunity to lead your country to WC glory at home will never come again.am not a Brazil fan but its sad he is out.but…

The ref caused all of this.he had absolutely no control in this match.James was kicked all over the park by the likes of fernandinho and paulinho without any of them being carded.Cuadrado was also kicked every time he had the ball. The ref just turned a blind eye.The Colombians in the 1st half had a penalty at the edge of the area where the Brazilians charged out of the line before it was even taken…the ref ignored this.

Guess what?…The Colombians decided to give as good as they got.The 1st foul James made he was carded!the hatchet men on the other hand despite committing multiple fouls were not booked. This ultimately led to a violent match and Neymar got injured badly as a result. The ref is to blame.

I feel sad for Neymar but not Brazil.I hope the Germans knock them out now.

Ref let so much go last night it was pretty obvious who he wanted to win and who was going to win. It sort of came back to bite Brazil in the arse with the injury to Neymar which is not nice but reap what you sow…!

Good Morning all fellow Gooners in residence.

Kev – Amen to your rant about plastic fans and their membership in The Flavour of the Month Club. It’ll probably be a different sport, far less a different club or country, next month. A prawn sandwich anyone?

Just one small question though. What were you doing trolling through all those peoples’ closets, wardrobes and underwear drawers?

kt – I’m in total agreement with your 12:28 pm post. Sad for Neymar, but not Brazil.

I think the the ref was in over his head and was so scared of making a wrong decision that he made no decision other than to wave play on. He was extremely lucky that both teams more or less held their discipline as the game could easily have degenerated into a brawl.

Ginge – I went back and read your article from a few days ago. Thank you for the acknowledgement in your byline.

I really enjoyed the article. It covered the range of possible DM/holding options and their pros and cons very well. It was helpful to see a list of applicable/suitable players for each category so we could more easily put the categories into context. It certainly got me thinking more about who and what we need. It even got me scratching my head more than once.

I agree that we don’t need a Destroyer type, especially one in the the De Jong mold. Not very mobile, lacks pace and prone to rash tackles to recover from errors or being outpaced; resulting in more bookings and free-kicks conceded in critical areas.

The Invisible Wall type a la our Brazilian Irishman Gilbert O’Silva has worked well for us in the past. It wasn’t until he was injured for a few weeks that many fans began to appreciate what he did for the team. This was, in great part, due to his ability to do it in seamless and unruffled way that belied his reading of the game, ability to anticipate the direction of play and adjust his position accordingly. He cut out many of the high balls over the top and long through passes and generally broke up the opposition’s play, thereby giving our defence time to recover and regroup. He was also adept at passing the ball off to a forward player with little delay and good accuracy. If no one was immediately open and available, he was capable of carrying the ball forward till he found someone free.

The Hybrid/Box-to-Box type a la Patrick Vieira has also worked well for us and needs little explanation to any Arsenal supporter with the exception of some youngsters or recent fans.

The Deep-lying Playmaker or Quarterback type goes contrary to our recent style of play where the forward players have licence to roam freely and interchange positions. This style would be tempered by a deep lying player dictating the play. Such a player would make the team more predictable, something they have been regularly accused of recently and also more vulnerable if such a player was marked out of the game or injured.

As for Jack Wilshere possibly being able to fill this role, I have my doubts. He is a capable and talented player, but I still see him as the joker in the deck. Arsene is still trying to find where he works best, but every time he seems to be finding his feet, he goes down injured. Just when he is starting to develop that sympatico with his team mates he is out for an extended period. So, the jury is still out.

The more I tried to weigh up and choose between the Invisible Wall and Hybrid/Box-to-Box the more I realized that it is totally dependent on who else is in and/or will be in the team for the coming season. Also, it depends on what system Arsene anticipates on playing this coming season (4-2-3-1, 4-1-4-1, etc.)

Thierry Henry said he wouldn’t have scored as many goals without his partner Dennis Bergkamp laying them on a plate for him. Patrick Vieira also had a great partner in Emmanuel Petit, who held the fort so to speak in front of our back four, thereby allowing Patrick to gallop forward and link up with the forwards. They could also interchange on occasion with Paddy staying back and Manu bombing forward.

Manu was tall and capable at cutting out the high balls like Gilberto. Also like Gilberto, he read the game well, anticipated the direction of play and was mobile enough to close down the breakout player or intercept the through pass and robust enough not to be easily dispossessed.

Although Aaron Ramsey is the not the tough tackler that Paddy was, he possesses many the same capabilities and qualities that made him so successful for Arsenal. If Arsene intends to stick with the double pivot at the back, he needs to find someone fairly young and compatible with Aaron. Someone like Manu or Gilberto who are intelligent, mobile, robust, reasonably speedy, tall and most of all – patient. Not easy, for as you said most players with those abilities don’t want to play the holding role.

We have been lucky that Mikel Arteta, who is not a natural holding player, has been willing to play that role for the team even though he is not tall enough or robust enough and is losing pace. Flamoney is tough enough, but lacks the intelligence and patience required. Yet, they are both good squad players and still have a role to play as we integrate new players into the squad.

So, my choice is the Invisible Wall.

Lol. Some people cannot help but be sheep.

Neymar’s never been a fave, but he has almost single-handedly borne the weight of expectations on this Brazil team. An unfortunate way to end his campaign, and I hope his recovery is quick. It should give the thugs in his team food for thought though, eye for an eye and all that.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee is looking into Colombia defender Juan Zuniga’s challenge that left Neymar and the Brazilian nation in agony.

Zuniga bundled into the back of Neymar two minutes from the end of Friday’s World Cup quarter-final, putting the Brazilian superstar out of the rest of the tournament with a fractured vertebra.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee is analysing all the elements provided, the videos and the match reports and will decide whether or not to take action,” FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer said.

Fifa are just pandering to the demands of the Brazilian public. The hypocrisy of Scolari is a little embarrassing. I really don’t rate Debuchy. The only logical way of looking at it is that Wenger feels jenks/bellerin are not far away and Debuchy is also PL experienced.at least going forward he is better than Sagna…

Defensively am worried.Sagna was a beast at the back.he covered BFG excellently to an extent his lack of pace wasn’t an issue.just look at BFG for Germany to see what i mean. Can Debuchy play that role?…I seriously doubt that though i hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I like Griezmann kev.he is like a silkier version of Theo with more ability.he makes very intelligent forward runs into very awkward areas for defenders to control him.however,he has a limitation in that when teams really restrict the spacea to run into he is ineffective.just look at how he played vs Germany.he lacks that extra level a Sanchez will give you when the going gets tough and you need an individual to step up.We have theo though an probably/hopefully “S” so i see no need for him.

Valbuena is brilliant. If santi were to leave i’d sign him.he plays a very similar role to Santi abd would slot in seamlessly.

Gdna, we agree on one thing at least: that Neymar should not have had to exit the WC this way. But on official count, Brazil committed more fouls than Colombia (and many more fouls were not called); so they set the tone for the downfall of one of their own. Other Brazilian players have to step up. Outside of the goals of Luiz and Neymar, they have been absolute crap.

Our best display last season imo was at Craven Cottage when we started a midfield of Rosicky,Santi and Ramsey. It was so fluid and a joy to watch.for that deep midfield role you don’t necessarily need a brute…intelligence is key imo.if the deepest player has intelligence and the teams plays a good pressing game its a very good system.I’d certainly prefer it over a dedicated DM.

Good Evening everyone and a very warm welcome back to The Lady of the House.

Rico – I trust you had a relaxing and satisfying holiday at the beach.

I see Stan’s resolution to ignore and not to discuss the transfer window lasted a matter of minutes. However, I do agree with his assessment of Jenkinson. I too think he will come good if given a run of games with the first team.

I’m growing tired of people running down our young players who have yet to be given an adequate chance to prove themselves. We had enough of that two seasons ago with them running down Ramsey and calling him shit. Yet, we certainly missed him when he was injured last season.

Canadian Gooner

Ginge – KT reinforced a point I was trying to make. The new holding player needs to be intelligent, able to read the game and react quickly to the evolving situation. He has to be mobile in order to patrol the gap that often opens up between attackers and defence. Plugging the holes that open up due to our free roaming and fluid forward players, especially when one or more of our defenders venture forward.

What do Arsenal do, considering that he has only two years left on his deal???

Do we bring him into the fold, give him the perfect stage to perform, then see him angle for a big contract raise or agitate for a transfer to a Petro-Dollar club in 12 months?

Or…

Do we sell him now while he is a hot property?

It also depends if AFC sign Sanches and Remy. If both of them come then one has to go…..and I cannot see it being one of Giroud and Poldi.

So it will be a straight one between Campbell and Sanogo. And there is no need to bet who that one will be.

tsgh
tsgh

interesting question kev..

i guess if you look at his figures then he is not a AFC ready but he is a big game player who can still improve under A. his all round game is very advanced. If he can be as good as Paolo Wanchope then it isn’t bad to keep him as a 3rd choice striker/midfielder.
on his modest salary he is worth

Galindo back to Bolivia. Seems that we can bid cheerio to him. His contract finishes next summer so I cannot see the club offering him a new contract and thus he will be left free.

Canadian Gooner
Canadian Gooner

Ginge – I think Arsene will wait till late autumn, so he has ample time to assess Theo’s recovery and future potential, before starting talks with him about extending his contract. Who and how many forwards we sign this transfer window and how Sanogo and Joel Campbell progress will also have a bearing on those matters.

FFP is having an effect on even the petrodollar clubs. Note $amir Nasti’s rumoured ‘significant pay cut’ in his new contract as an indication of the shape of things to come.

Hell Raising Devil

Theo has fast feet and a fast brain. The problem is that his brain was in the inner lane while his feet where in the fast lane. So about time now he gets them in the same lane.
