Morning all,
Something makes me wonder whether Liverpool and Arsenal have thrashed out a price for Luis Suarez and all has, in principle, been agreed.
Why?
Well, Liverpool seem to be on the verge of signing £20m Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, who is by all accounts, worse than Suarez for his on-field antics. Surely Brenda Rodgers wouldn’t want two bad boys in his first team?
And yesterday, Arsene Wenger talked about how the player would, if he signed, have to conform to the clubs ways and behaviour which Suarez has displayed whilst at Liverpool, would not be tolerated:
We have values that we want our players to respect. No matter where they come from, we will be very touchy on that of course.
This club has built a reputation, not only during my period here but over 127 years, and the values that are very important for this club have to be respected by every player, no matter where he comes from. That will be with every potential signing.
Why would he feel the need to make such comments? Even if some plank asked him a question relating to Suarez and his behaviour, Wenger would dismiss the question by simply saying ‘He’s a Liverpool player, it’s not an Arsenal problem’ – or something similar, surely?
And, going back to Liverpool being close to signing another striker, well maybe they know that once other clubs see they have vast money from a player sale, they’d be ripped off.
Didn’t Real Madrid do that to us over Higuain?
Suggestion is that both Liverpool and Arsenal held further talks yesterday. Fingers crossed eh….
Another quote from Arsene Wenger:
We want to [sign Suarez] if it is feasible in an amicable way.
We will respect what Liverpool want to do. I don’t want to speak about Suarez, because that is between Liverpool and Arsenal.
I am a great believer you have to keep as much confidentiality as possible, which is quite difficult in the modern world.
But we work very hard, not only on the case you name, but on other different cases. We can still strengthen the squad, there is one month to go. We are at the beginning of August and working very hard to strengthen our squad.
I am confident. You look at many teams around us. Nothing has happened until now. At the moment the market hasn’t moved a lot. Apart from Manchester City, nobody has done anything.
So there’s hope……
Most of the newspapers report that we are stepping up our attempts to sign Ashley Williams. Well for me it’s simple. Swansea want £10 million, we need a solid central defender before the season starts and he fits the bill nicely, so just go and pay and move on.
Players need signings, fans need signings, and funny enough, this squad needs bolstering, fast! Just two weeks today, the season kicks off and we need to be ready!
One new signing, well, our only new signing to date is set to make his debut this weekend and Arsene Wenger suggests that he will surprise Arsenal fans:
Sanogo will surprise you, because your expectation doesn’t look to be high. He will not surprise me because my expectation is very high. He’s a top class striker.
I hope for the players sake, and us fans, Sanogo is another ‘Anelka’ and not another ‘Chamakh’!
But Wenger insists that we are still looking to strengthen our squad:
There is still one month to go. We are working very hard to strengthen our squad.
He’s had June and July already, why should August be any different?
Well, because things aren’t good, he’s raised players hopes, he raised fans hopes too…
Undo all that hope and they’ll be a whole lot of grief coming his way…
Anyway, enough of that, enjoy The Emirates Cup which kicks off at 2pm today. We don’t play until 4.20pm and we are up against Napoli…
Will the stadium be full of happy proud Gooners in full voice of support?
Will it be full of Napoli and Galatasary fans?
Or, will it be an absolute wash out with empty seats all over the place?

I’ve always said it, things will be done the Arsenal way when it comes to transfer. I am not on the trian that has high expectations, only to be disappointed. However, my expectation to challenge for the titles is very high.

I must agree on Williams. Wenger knows he’ll be short, will be using Sagna as make shift if there’s an injury. Needs a prem experienced defender as all foreigners struggle in their first season and with our style. So yeah, i agree, just pay near the 10m and get it done.

Bentner wil be like a new signing for us when he sorts out his bank account. Lady Arse are suggesting he has just turned down a move to Twente. I have heard the Orient are looking for a new striker, big man up front. That’s what he’ll have left by this time next year. Even Orient are a more discerning team they wouldn’t employ him either, on the basis of a lack of ability!

This is my first comment on the site even though I have been a regular reader for almost a year 🙂 I simply love this blog and the people who comment here…..
The blog has rumors about transfers or lack of 😉 you guys talk about the players, arsene, board and almost everything and I enjoy it. I started following arsenal almost 11 years back and over this period have realised that i cannot support any other team. The believes the squad and the manager I think its just the best club……
Anyway, I will be try and become a regular active member of HH although my football knowledge is very limited as compared to TS, KT, DG, Adam and offcourse RICO….

Nice one Rico, Suarez is in the bag that’s a definite, Williams too, I have reservations about Wayne the pain i honestly think he thought we may make an offer and i believe he would have jumped at the chance, but i see him in blue. Arsenal and Liverpool are working together to keep prices down that’s pretty obvious in these days of stupid prices many clubs keep mum and work together. We all understand that Torres prices and Carrol’s have a habit of backfirering. I like you believe that deals are struck quite early a kind of secret squirrel between supposedly rival clubs. We forget at times that football is a business and the supporter is the client. I know i am sticking my neck out but i reckon our supporters will not be disappointed this year.

Am I the only one who thinks that the bloody Suarez story just keeps going a round in circles.
Good read rico.I have the same suspicions since i doubt Wenger would talk openly about Suarez if a deal was not close or even agreed in principle.Liverpool fans are deluding themselves that he will stay but we as Arsenal fans know all the indications of a player leaving.if he wasn’t leaving liverpool would’ve made a huge public statement by now.Also when Bale goes to madrid they are not coming for suarez.and no way would they sell Ronaldo to accomodate him.in preseason Ronaldo has played as a striker in preparation for the arrival of bale.if suarez is willing to hand in a transfer request or even go to court its just a matter of time before he leaves.

Think about it like this STEVE,
If Wenger had spent £70 mill in the first week of the window how stupid would he be if said player broke a leg in Asia. Suarez is banned for quite a few games so whats the point in signing him now were not a benevolent fund. Many clubs as it gets to the end of the window panic that they wont sell players, and that is when reasonable deals can be made. Your comments may ring true but we will have to wait till the window shuts to find out. I suspect that you will be chewing on your comment before the league kicks off.

However, I have always wondered why we are not going after Lewandoski? I know he wants Bayern move but still we could have atleast tried. I think he would come around 30M.

I thought Arsene looked in better health yesterday than I have seen him for quite a while in his smartly tailored suit. I thought the part about him being under pressure to make signings was particularly interesting.

Morning all, nothing like a good dose of Super Rugby to get the day started and there’s Arsenal today as well. Should be a good sporting day.
I expect the Suarez stuff to run for a while, he can’t play until September /October so I suspect neither us nor Liverpool are in any rush. Liverpool buying another striker is a good sign though. As for the CD, I would actually like to be Sakho from PSG or Rannochia from Inter, sure neither has premier league experience but given that they won’t be first choice it will probably be easier to settle in.
@ Adam your point about Madrid is spot on, except the Catalunya part, didn’t they just spend 50 million on Neymar? Seems like both RM and Barca live in alternate universe.

Rico. But hasn’t Costa got a release clause and price? If so, Liverpool would have to meet that to get him (assuming he wants to play for a giant of the game like Brenda). So whether they are or are not perceived to have money might seem irrelevant.

Breezy. No, the point was that the historical animosity between RM and Barcelona is founded in some part in the fact that the good General used to like nothing more than a regular bit of Catalan slaughter. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the Catalans have never forgotten.
But, I agree that both teams and management are full of a decidedly sickening sense of entitlement and their stench of superiority hangs in the air like the putrid atmosphere of the Antelope House at the Zoo on a hot day. When you consider the absolute economic and social disaster Spain is at the moment, it does say something about the social conscience of both clubs.

Kt- we (CH,Cg, yourself and me) have discussed what we will have to do in order to conclude the suarez saga in our favour on a few occasions on here and I have always maintained that AFC will have to advice the clueless dippers how to save face without coming out weak or unambitious.
My hypothesis is very simple, Liverpool and AFC will agree confidentially that both us and Suarez will have to come out of this badly in terms of reputation. That means the dippers will say a week or so after buying Costa, that they do not think LS07’s attitude is good for the greater good of the club. This will probably be announced after the dippers win a game in the new season with Alberto, Coutinho scoring some great goals without Suarez.
Originally I thought that announcement could come after the Gerard testimonial match today but maybe because Costa’s deal has not been agreed we will have to wait.
@ Adam, and Barca’s motto is “more than a club” it would actally be funny if it wasn’t so sickening.

I also don’t get why pool.fans think suarez moving to us is a move sideways.we have consistently finiehed above them in the league over the past couple of seasons.last season we finished 12 points ahead of them while they finished below Everton.we were 5 points behind man city in 2nd and 2 points off chelsea in 3rd despite our inconsistencies over the season and losing 2 of our most influential players in Rvp/Song.anyway it doesn’t matter what Arsenal or Lpool fans think or even stevie me or Brenda for that matter;all that matters is what suarez thinks.he views us a step up and thats all that matters in this case.

Going back to this period 14 years ago, I believe the atmosphere was more hostile than now. Anelka the one who the English media claim single-handedly won us the title in 1998 had done a Suarez. He also blamed the English media for his unhappiness. He was eventually shipped out to Real Madrid for just over £23m. But did AW go for Patrick Kluivert to partner his fellow Dutchman up front?
No AW did it his way and spent far less than the £23M we got for Le Sulk on an other inconsistent french ‘boy’. This was with DD in charge and there were no plans for a stadium as yet. We were still making profits instead of buying to please fans who claim to be more ambitious than the club…
The rest is history… TH14 may not have won us the title that season because TA06, PV04 and Lee Dixon watched and allowed a carpet chested left footed weak looking Welsh boy to go past them like Denilson on a Sunday afternoon after having cassava for lunch to score one of the best individual goals I have seen…
That did not end there, the so called gods of football who are not like our current crop bottled it when we had a penalty before Giggs scored.

No matter what you think of Wenger i’ll always be eternally grateful for him bringing Thierry Henry.Watching him play is one of the greatest sights in football and we maybe took what he did for granted at the time.he was special and i’ll never know how he never won the balon d’or when he was at his peak.we can only dream of getting another player like him…lets hope Sanogo proves to be an astute buy.

Sanogo is more likely to be an Anelka type of striker or a faster Treszequet than TH14 me think.

I’ve seen just one preseason game involving BVB and that was the tie against Bayern whereby they mainly stuck with the 4-2-3-1.yesterday i said wenger will not go for Gustavo because he wants complete midfielders and Gundogan typifies that.Last season he played the arteta role for them but in that game he played as a no.10 and he never looked out of his depth.if we sign a midfielder I expect him to have similar characteristics.
On the 4-1-4-1 formation which Guardiola is trying to implement at Bayern it seems he is keen on developing Thiago to be his Busquets in midfield.I don’t know if it will work over the long haul but it seems to me that he is trying to change too much too soon.
Great observation rico.I wonder how theo feels at times when he is so high up while Giroud is at full sprint on the half way line 😉 Wenger knows suarez is maybe one of the few players that can play as a false nine and he can go up a couple of levels if he is in a better team under a better manager.

I think the Suarez business finds itself in a bit of Catch 22 situation. The clause, that none of us has seen, seems to suggestthat if a bid of £40+1 is made then it opens the door for the player to leave but, only a team in the CL. At this point AFC are not in the CL, or at least that is the basis of the dippers response, as such they can ask a fe of whatever they like as the ‘deal’ is to a non qualifying CL club. But as soon as we qualify I think we will find that the dippers will have to sell for £40+1m. End of story, well not quite. We need the player for the pre-qualifying round, to ensure we do qualify! So where does that leave us or them and LS0? ?
We do need to buy him, but then again we don’t. We need him for CL, but can’t have for EPL until Sept. ah whar’s to done?

I think it worked because Sahin and Gundogan are comfortable in both attack and defence with Bender doing the donkey work in between allowing the aforementioned 2 players orchestrate the midfield.
I thought Bayern played well but Dortmund won because when they won the ball they were able to break through the press of the opposition and were able to overwhelm thiago who was isolated deep in midfield alone.the likes of Reus made very intelligent runs in such sitiuations and Bayern back 5 couldn’t cope with these transitions.

Anybody who understands that football is played on a football pitch and not a statistic sheet knew, as soon as they saw Gervinho miss all those goals, that he was never Arsenal quality. Wenger realised it too. The downgrading of expectations has really caught up with Wenger now. The board know it, Gazidis knows it and anyone with a brain knows it.
How does a manager know whether a player (kezman) who had scored 105 goals in 122 games for PSV will be a complete disaster in the EPL in a winning world class squad?

Feel the treatment show towards Chamakh has been harsh. I think would have been a good player if given a chance. Only played until RVP came back from inury in the first season he joined and did really well since then hasn’t been given a chance apart from a few league cup games and a few meaningless champions league game if given the same opportunity as say Giroud would have scored the same amount of goals if not more.
I really liked hleb imo.in the hole he was excellent at everything bar scoring.if you could count preassists i bet half our goals that season came from him being involved.cesc even said he enjoyed playing football with hleb.

We have need of more defensive cover, just on the injury list but as a defensive unit, the stats say we are up there with the best. He improved on it after the 2nd goal was conceded and in the 2nd half before he was replaced. I think if he can sort that part of his game we will be solid in the midfield area irrespective who plays alongside him(arteta/ramsey). We need a quicker version of arteta

Rosicky’s pressing game was very impressive.Ramsey helped him but our pressing became useless when jack failed to do so as typified by Napoli’s 2nd goal.in the 2nd half ox and arteta dovetailed well with reference to rosicky and napoli barely had a kick in midfield as a result.there were also fewer gaps in between the lines too.Ox looks like a better CM than jack imo.

Kt- I use to watch a lot of youth games 3 or 4 years ago and JW was never a CM. He was always behind JET, Frimps and Ozyakup. AW is obviously determined to make JW a star for the media so he will persist…

As much as i like Rosicky who is my favourite Arsenal player we still need to solve the issue of in between the lines.we really struggled in that part in attack since we had no one working the channels between CB/FB.thats why we either need a false 9 in the mould of Suarez to work there or buy a no.10 in the mould of Oscar.Rosicky kept running into brick walls in the middle since no one took the initiative of working the channels to disrupt napoli’s structure to allow other attackers gaps to run into.Suarez would really improve us in that aspect.

Kos has been my 2nd faviurite player behind TR07 for a while but I think Kos deserves a promotion.. At least before PSG come for him.
I still believe Sagna/Kos will be the best CB pairing.. both are aggressive, speedy, powerful and both read the game very well.

Wenger on his team’s performance…
Napoli is a good side. They finished second in the league in Italy last year. They are very good at counter-attacking. I feel overall during the 90 minutes that we played very well going forward. It took us some time to adjust defensively. It was as well a mental test because we were 2-0 down against such a good team to come back to 2-2. It was very interesting for us.
I think our defence in the second half played very well. Defensively in the first half we gave too much distance to their players, we marked them from too big a distance and we shortened up a little bit in the second half. Our distances between the lines was shorter and we played higher up and overall we did very well on that.
The u-21 performances are really troubling. We don’t have a striker from u-9 to u-100 level.
Almost every player at Arsenal is playing in an unnatural position. Even Akpom was a midfielder until last August.
ts – I think it will be ok after the clearout of 15 players in the U21. What’s happening now is a bunch of players playing together for the first time trying to get to know each other. Chemistry is not there yet

I missed the game, but having just watched the highlights it looked like we had enough chances to win the game about 4/5-2. Defence looked shaky, defenders needed. Attack didn’t finish clear cut chances, top striker needed. No cover in midfield after we attack, defencive midfielder needed. What we need to sign is glaringly obvious every time we play!

Morning all . Some good chat yesterday
Morning all, Didn’t know a lot about our new striker Yaya Sanogo so googled him. 6’3″ 12 stone and looks pretty good with both feet but looks predominantly a lefty. Saw a clip of his goals and assists from what i saw this guy takes up very forward positions as the old fashion centre forward. This guy looks like he has a good understanding of all around him takes his chances well and has a good eye for a killer pass as well. He is not shrugged off the ball easily and will fight for the 50 50. at 6’3″ he is also good with his head and doesn’t look like he’s afraid of mixing it up. He looks as if he has a good turn of pace with good ball control, and he knows where his team mates are. Not getting carried away but this 20 year old striker looks like he could be a very useful player for us. Today he plays for us against Galataseray, don’t know how his nerves are for big games and debute’s but i am looking forward to finding out. Good luck Ya ya

Thought our boy’s did pretty good yesterday, they showed the fighting spirit we like to see. Giroud’s after match interview made me think that the team were a little supprised at Napoli’s capabilities, A bit of a step up from what they have been facing in Asia. Playing youngsters against better sides will make them realise that they have to work that much harder. We pressed a bit more in the second half and their side took their foot off the gas,our injection of pace seemed to unsettle them. I was impressed with BFGs header and Kosi.s final header he had a very good game in my opinion and it showed with the them coming up. Yes we also need signings we all know that but i was still entertained and liked the guys spirit.
I think it is a ploy or diversion tactic devised by Levy and Lewis to throw the scent of other clubs who may want part of the reported record signing fee.
On the other hand if UnReal were going to pay upfront I am sure they would have bitten their hands off for the fees already. Rumours are they only paid £10M up front for Modric… ha ha ha
