The English Premier League has been hailed as the best league in the world, the league that every player wants to play in. The Media tells us this at every given opportunity, managers say it and players also have been heard to boast about it.
Well I for one can’t see it.
Every time the English sides come face to face with the so-called best from other leagues in football, seldom do they come out on top.
There is no doubt in my mind that the EPL is not the best.
If you take the best team in our league, which at this point in time is Manchester United and see how they have fared this year, you have to agree that they only won the Premier league by others misfortunes.
In all honesty four to five teams could have won the league this season but mistake after mistake opened the door for United. Our own team, The Arsenal could so easily have won the league if only they hadn’t self destructed.
Chelsea had the same problems as us, they had injuries which resulted in bad games at times and bad results followed, the sacking of Wilkins didn’t help their cause either. Manchester City also had their chances but new players, which they acquired often need time to gel. That, coupled with silly slip ups saw their chance go.
So how in all honesty are we the best?
Manchester United may have reached the final in the Champions League but it has to be said they had the help of the draws throughout the rounds but in the final they were matched with what the media have hailed as the best team of all time. Great praise for a team who supposedly play in an inferior league to us.
Barcelona. I could write about Barcelona exploits all day long but at the end of the day they absolutely hammered our best team. To be fair they hammered us as well, yes I can say that we beat them at The Emirates but an honest fan would say that it really was against the run of play.
When we played the return leg at The Camp Nou, Barcelona overpowered us to the point of us not having many shots on target other than our goal. That was an absolute hiding for a team who are supposedly the fourth best team in the best league in the world. I could of course mention that we played almost the whole of the second half with only ten men, but that still wouldn’t detract from the point that we were battered.
In my eyes Manchester United have been the best team in the EPL for many years not forgetting Chelsea who have had their own successes as well, but Utd have been there all the time.
Utd were humbled in the final and this will ultimately affect them in the future, you only have to look at our own Arsenal who self destructed after their humiliated defeat against Barcelona. We plummeted from second in the best league in the world to a fortunate fourth.
We were fortunate that the season ended when it did as we could so easily been out in the cold had it continued for another couple of games but it didn’t and we secured fourth, just.
Manchester United have been fortunate that they played Barcelona in the last game of the season, they will now have the close season to try and build their confidence back up and make changes where needed. I have no doubts that the hammering they encountered will stay with the players for quite some time but I am sure Ferguson will endeavour to replace some of his players in the hope that this humiliating defeat will be diluted.
Of course we have to remember the other teams in the Premier league; the teams that make this league the best in the world. Birmingham must receive some acclaim, they beat us in the final of the Carling Cup but they will be playing their football next year in a lower division owing to their relegation from the best league in the world.
Manchester City winners of The FA Cup made a spirited surge at the end of the season to squeeze into third place they could be the dark horses of the Premier league for next season, although when they played us they shut up shop and were quite happy with a point. Next season should they get paired with Barcelona or Madrid a point will not help them much.
Our Old neighbour’s Totteringham made their début in The Champions League this season but after getting hammered by Real Madrid, they too will have to wait a few years before they reach these dizzy heights again.
So who has the best league in the world?
I just believe that when all our top teams have been well and truly humiliated surely it cannot be ours, can it?

Bit of news re the squad, Mark Randall has been told his services are no longer required at the club. Young Guns report that he has been released after the decision was made not to offer him a new contract – he is the third young gunner to be released this summer, George Brislen-Hall and Roarie Deacon being the other two.
I hope they all find new clubs and do well in the future….

I would love Barcelona to play in the PL, not sure they would maintain their high standards playing against some of the sides in our league 😉
I can’t agree with that though, as the fact that 5 teams could of won it this year, makes it a better league, than the la liga, which is Barcelona’s every year. No competition. Barcelona may be better than United, and United are the best in the Premier league and Barcelona are best in La Liga, but that’s a comparison on which league has the best team, not which league has the most competition.

Hi ricolicious,I must admit rico it would be an eye opener Barca in our league we could bring them down to our level pretty quick, or maybe we could reach theirs, always two sides to a penny. It did seem like they were in our league last year and the year before seeing how we played them twice in both years, and in all honesty we hav,nt done that bad against them, overall we lost but we can do that against any team as has been proved this year. But next year, yeh next year we’ll have the beating of them, as long as we get through that is.
I still cannot believe how we reacted to that loss at wenbley….

No doubt the best of england isnt as good as barca but our league has a stronger 4-20th teams and it isnt a 2 horse race. You have wolves beating manure and birmingham beating arsenal etc.
Also the financial power of the premier league with Man City and Chelsea means the best players and coaches are brought in from around the globe.
Hi all.Steve i have to disagree with you on this one.Barca and madrid are probably the best teams in Europe but that doesn’t make their league the strongest.bar madrid/barca our top 5 teams would beat their 3rd-5th teams.there is more competition here both top and bottom.also don’t forget madrid/barca get 60% of the TV revenue in Spain unlike in England where it is equally shared so id be very surprised if they weren’t the top 2 teams in the world.
There is a big difference between a league with ‘the best team’ in it (Barca) and ‘the best league’. The latter would demand that Barca and RM were faced with teams who could regularly and genuinely compete (both financially and performance wise). That is not the case unlike the EPL.
This seems so obvious that it makes me want to question the knowledge and/or viewpoints of the author of this blog.

I also think you could argue that the mancs are not the best team in the league but the most consistent.they are built to win the league.we on the other hand are more technical than them/chavs/city and thats why we performed better especially at home against barca.we were closer to beating them than madrid themselves despite us finishing 4th.going on that i don’t think that your theory that the mancs loss in the final makes la liga the best holds.
How would Barca fare if they had to play teams like stoke, Blackburn and Bolton every week? Kevin Davis would make mincemeat of their defence with English refs.

I don’t think it’s as clear cut as everyone’s making it out to be. Outside of the top two the Spanish league is very competitive.
If competition is the key sign of the quality of a league, then the Dutch and French leagues are better than the EPL.

I was gonna mention Bundesliga, but Dortmund cake walked it, so I’m ignoring that league this season. But last year and before, yes, it’s a very competitive league.
In the last 8 years, they’ve had 5 different teams win it. They might not have the best teams in their league, but I’d have to say they have the best league.
Even Werder Bremen almost got relegated.

Funny, I read a lot of blogs (this is the only one i comment on) and pretty much every one of them is calling for the same players to leave.
Surely Wenger and his staff must see this.
Barca are the best team ever. The only position I think they can strengthen is in goal. When we beat them Messi missed a first half hatrick and in the second half they tired. Before Sat their key players had the previous 2 weeks off – given that kind of preparation they are unbeatable. They humiliated ManU – it would have been the same whoever they’d played. When Inter beat them last year they were not at their physical peak. You can only beat that team if they are tired, and still you need a lot of luck (ie they need to miss a hatfull of chances)
Our league is the best in the world. Barca are just on another planet.

People are just blinded by the billing given to the EPL. It’s a strong league, but it’s too lazy to just declare it the best, the most competitive, when there are indications that it isn’t.
Will, it’s just a statement pundits have been rolling out for years because the EPL makes the most money and in the Champions league the four English teams make it out the group stages most of the time.
Now fans are just echoing that statement without paying attention to the other leagues. These are the same pundits that tried to mention Rooney and Messi in the same breath. Nonsense.

Where to play better football is the Spanish league. They are good games, emotional, exciting and good football. All clubs have great players. The Corunha come down, is far superior Professional Football, the majority of English clubs. And I could speak also of Malaga,Gijon, etc.
The German league is well played. Play to score goals.
French is very technical and also play to score goals.
In Italy, they play not to lose. It’s annoying to see.
PL, is soulful, has a good environment, have good players is very combative. It’s good, because that’s where Arsenal play. It’s not where you play better football. Fight a lot. It is very muscular.
In the Netherlands, throws himself forward. Do not know how to defend. There is always a lot of goals.
In Portugal, football is a slower, very technical, it is very argued.
With their idea of defending? Most leagues.

I see we have different views about our leagues, and you guys make great comments and i take in all you say, even the ones doubting my mental state, i must agree i am as mad as a hatter even madder after this year. But you must admit that we have seen some good football from foreign leagues this year not just the top clubs that win everything but clubs like shalka who were given no chance and stayed in for ages, even that team down the road played some cracking stuff, never to be seen again of course but i don’t mind that. I must admit i look through our league and am not impressed by what i see, billionaires dictating what happens and i see that as manipulation by money, Transfers are only fair when everybody has the same money How could teams without billionaires compete, and when the fair play rules come in the big clubs will have acquired all the talent about, to sustain them for the next five years and with the youth all being assigned to these top teams will also dominate for another ten years, you may think its the best but definitely not the fairest

Good points JJ, but how many games did Messi miss this year, and i have seen him bowled over everytime i have seen him play he’s pretty robust.
JJ barca would only really come unstuck at the back as thats where I think they very average and its hoof ball that would bother them I reckon but they’ll still beat 98% of teams in the PL. I think the PL is the most competative but is it the best…??? hard to say it’s def not the most skillful thats for sure.
The question of the best league is answered by the make up of the UEFACL Quarter finals. Of the 8 teams 4 are EPL sides. This is further backed up by the competitive nature of games featuring top and bottom sides in the 2010-11 season.

I gave my opinion about the championships. There are other factors:
a) The number of teams in each
b) The climate and conditions of the pitch during the season
c) the stops, such as French and German League who quit one month
d) The number of internal competitions and how they are structured. Many countries have a league, cup and league and cup where the cups have different rules, especially in the playoffs two hands
e) International Commitments
f) Quality of power players and the media. Now starting to be previewed Russian league, which I think quality and disputed. Is the level of Dutch, French and Portuguese in importance.
g) the dissemination of world championship teams and the own
Steve, that is far too one sided. You have to look at both Euro comps to get a wider view of each countries league, factor in the Uefa cup then give us some new stats please.

Afternoon all.Steve i think nasri is very talented.i however think he has yet to show that he can turn on that ruthless streak that he can turn on at will.if you saw messi’s eyes as he alighted the team bus you could see something in his eyes.he gets ideas on the pitch that he isn’t afraid to try even if it means running past a half a dozen defenders to score.nasri has lots of talent but he lacks that streak that top top players have.
Remember henry’s solo effort against the spuds or madrid?thats what top players can do at will.nasri has shown he can do it like the fulham and porto goals but he isn’t consistent enough to do that week in week out regardless of the opposition.
JJ re your earlier comment tika taka doesnt work in the PL just look at us, well they happen to be twice as good at it than us and park the bus and try stop them won’t work in my opinion as they have far to many options where as we don’t…!

a point i would like to make is that all the other leagues have a their winter breaks
and if you take barcelona for example i wouldnt be suprised to see them in our position ,
6-7 games in two weeks iniesta out for a season due to a leg break due to a horrible tackle by shawcross or messi out for 4 months due to a late tackle by robinson they would struggle for sure…..

Wigan Athletic – Dave Whelan by Whelco Holdings is the owner of Wigan. Whelan has invested in the club £ 52 million (60 million) of which £ 7.5 million, are borrowing at 5% interest per year.
Wolverhamptom – The club is owned 25% by Steve Morgan, the remaining 75% also belong to Morgan, but through his company Bridgemere Investments, based in Guernsey. The club owner has already invested £ 30 million (about Euro 34 million) in new shares.

Tiki taka can very easily work in the PL.The 07/08 team almost won the league that way.there a key component that makes barca better at it than us apart from the obvious one that they have better players.in iniesta and messi they have insane dribblers of the ball.when pass pass doesn’t work these two will run at the defence forcing you to commit.the CL final was a perfect example.in the 1st half messi was beating players for fun creating lots of space for others.in the 2nd half the mancs were scared to charge at him leaving lots of space and time for him to score.you need dribblers for tiki taka to beat all forms of defences.hleb got castigated for not shooting but he was our key to slicing apart parked buses.cesc enjoyed playing with him because of the amount of space he created by beating players.this season we were doing fine when nasri was on fire but when he stopped we had very few options.direct dribblers accelerate play in and around the area to open up options.messi/iniesta do that villa/pedro/alves make the off the ball runs knowing xavi will find them.we need more direct dribblers i say.

JJ it was tiki taka no doubt but the key difference was that we played 100miles/hr when we reached the opposition penalty area.

hello everybody, i think the clear out should start from the 1st team but i think Stan Kroenke has started to look at the accounts.
Then why the transfer rumours , the window is not opened until the 1st of July now i have decided not to read any transfer rumours anymore.
