Morning all.
Premier League Champions David Raya, Gabriel, William Saliba Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice were selected for the PFA Premier League Team of the Year, the other six being Nico O’Reilly, Rayan Cherki, Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo and Igor Thiago. Not one of the eleven went on to win the individual award of players player of the season, crazily that went to Bruno Fernandes for his 21 assists for Utd throughout the season.
So neither the players or football writers thought that a Premier League winner and Champions League finalist or domestic cup winner was more deserving of an individual award than a player whose team won nothing. How bonkers is that? The stand out player of last season in my opinion is David Raya but it could quite easily be any of our players or even Haaland or Thiago for the sheer number of goals they scored. Thinking outside the box, what about players who stood out for Sunderland, Bournemouth and Brighton, clubs who secured European football against the odds?
Football isn’t just about the so called big clubs is it? There are 20 in the Premier League and not all can spend the amounts the so called big clubs do yet they go about their business quietly and in many ways, more smartly than those at the top. Did anyone watch Brentford batter Totts? Mamadou Sangare, Brentford’s record signing cost £38 million and he’s 24 years old. He was outstanding. Whether or not he continues to play as well throughout the season remains to be seen but if he does, he’s going to be considered an absolute bargain. He’s just one example of the deals which are done for a lot less money than the ‘big club’ signings.
Our only ‘bargain’ this summer is Christos Tzolis who right now looks an absolute steal at £35m or thereabouts. He’s certainly started strongly and long may that remain but why aren’t we able to do more deals like his? Why do we, other clubs do, simply shell out double or even triple the amount we paid for Tzolis just because the player has a name which is already recognised around the world?
This summer has been like a Premier League club swap shop as so many players have switched clubs for hideous amounts of money. Overseas clubs are totally ripping off Premier League clubs too just because they know they can. How on earth can Barcola who seems to be out of favour at PSG, be valued at £145m give or take a few million? Don’t get me started on Julian Alvarez, I’ve already had my moan about him.
I thought Andrea Berta was about spotting talent everywhere and at all clubs, not just players who you and I can identify because we see them play each week or when they play against us. That’s easy, especially if the finances to sign them are available. If the likes of Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth etc etc are spotting great younger signings, surely Arsenal should be as well. I don’t mean 16-18 year olds by the way, we seem to ok at that this summer although we won’t know how good any of our academy signings will be just yet, but what about the 20-22 year olds who on the cusp of great things but just need a little bit of refinement?
Another little moan and grown over with…

New post up.
I think we got the best player too but sadly, our opinion doesn’t count.
It’s amazing how many internet fans cannot wait to see the back of him because Havertz is better.. Weird.
That’s a relief Cicero as a CL league match is scheduled for the same date.. lol
There were a number of high profile strikers signed by Premiership clubs last summer, Isak, Sesko, Etikite, Delap and Gyokeres. I believe, despite the doubters in the media, that we got the best of the bunch.
Gyokeres on fitness, availability and goals scored wins hands down when compared to the others and we didn’t have to break the bank in terms of transfer fee and wages.
A good bit of business.
Dot com saying date and time to be announced
Sky must have jumped the gun Rico. The official E F L website lists the fixture as T B C, to be confirmed.
On a Tuesday at 3pm according to Sky fixture list. They must have that wrong.
Morning Cicero, all.
Ipswich away in the Carabao Cup.
Ha ha.
What a plonker he is..
I see that Raheem Sterling is in court for driving offenses including driving under the influence of shisha pipe and dangerous driving .Probably will get more points than Tottenham
He’s obviously not deemed a big enough name for us, or he’s too short as Cicero pointed out yesterday 😜
I see Igor Paixo from Marseille who Arsenal were linked with is close to a move to Sunderland.
League Cup draw tonight, I hope we get Southampton at The Emirates..
‘We’d like our offer accepted,’ says Barca president on AlvarezBarcelona president Joan Laporta has said they would like Atletico Madrid to accept their offer for Julian Alvarez.
In a video from the club’s channels posted on X, Laporta said: “The truth is that we’re very interested in the player. We’d like our offer to be accepted, and we say this with all due respect for Atletico Madrid.
“We want them to know that, if they are open to selling during this summer transfer window, we would be willing to buy the player, in accordance with the offer we’ve submitted to them.”
Alvarez wants to move to Barcelona but Atletico do not want to sell to them.
Arsenal are also interested in Alvarez but would need the player to indicate to them that he was willing to join before making a move.
Please Atlético, say yes to Barca.
Goodness knows why he was in the team though..
Well I got that wrong because Bruno Fernandez was in the 25/26 team of the season or whatever they call it…
It’s annoying because I can’t think of anyone to blame for my mistake. 😬
Moving on swiftly….
Hi Geoff, thanks. I certainly wouldn’t have picked Fernandes.
If there was an award for penalties then no Arsenal player would get it.
I bet your swim was warmer than my last two Cicero. Lol
Morning Rico and all.
Nice write up Rico with some interesting points. Personally, I would have picked David on the grounds he helped arsenal to reach finals and win the premier league while also winning the golden gloves award with 19 clean sheets,
Yes, Haaland scored 27 goals but how many of them were from penalty shot.
If I had my way I would change the rules for the golden boot and make it that only goals scored in play count and then add a separate trophy for penalties,
Good morning all, just back from the weekly swim so I will now read the post.
The Delap sale value is hilarious, kind of but also ridiculous. I don’t know how Chelsea do it.
Im keeping quiet about my suggestions to sign him last summer. Lol
Morning Limey, Kev, all.
Agree on Rice but at least he was still young. I know it’s not my money and all that and I shouldn’t care but there’s nothing better imo than seeing a young unknown signed who turns out to be superb.
Other one of our own I should add.
Morning Rico/everyone
The PFA main award was a joke,I would agree with the team of the year, well 9 out of 11. I can’t stand Fernandes anyway,I wouldn’t select Cherki,I’m glad they recognised Thiago,he has been outstanding for a couple of years.
Yes we’ve got to be smart, although sometimes the biggest price tag is value – Declan Rice anyone. It’s difficult, especially up against Man City and Chelsea who mysteriously receive inflated prices for underwhelming players. Look at Liam Delap, his value increased 40% in a year where he only scored 1 league goal(as a main striker by the way) admittedly affected by injury. Also look at the fees received for Savinho and Marmoush, something doesn’t ring true.
One player I’d love Arsenal to get is Kroupi of Bournemouth. I think he’s injured now,I reckon he will be highly sought after though.
RIP Dolly Parton, what a life and much loved.
Apparently she gave away millions too.
The Football Writers award lost a lot of its sheen quite a few years ago, but the PFA awards were always considered the gold standard as it was from fellow professionals but giving the main award to a guy who couldn’t even get into the best XI of 25/26 seems laughable and maybe shows how little thought many players give. Sky Sports and Match of the Day went on endlessly about Bruno Fernandez all through last season so maybe the influence is there for us to see. Funnily enough Bruno admitted that he voted for Declan Rice himself so I wonder if he was slightly embarrassed as well as delighted?
Who really cares, it’s just another example of the influence of the thinly veiled media campaign to undermine Arsenal. What doesn’t hurt us makes us stronger.
Sad to see the demise of Dolly Parton, I’m not a Country fan but she had a really nice voice, a great bubbly personality and was all woman, RIP.
