Morning Gooners,

Gossip first and then onto Allezkev’s match report from yesterday.

Reports are coming out of Spain suggesting that Barcelona have made an offer for Alex Song, €15 Million is the amount quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Jamie Sanderson of Young Guns commented on Twitter yesterday that it’s a busy week ahead for Arsenal as player exits and arrivals are expected. 1 maybe 2 on their way in is the important bit.

Back to yesterday and Arsenal concluded their pre-season in emphatic style, beating FC Koln 4-0, and most importantly keeping a clean sheet.

It’s not often in top-level football that any team, even Barcelona, can go through an entire game without a few defensive scares and there was a couple for Arsenal in this game but, as I am not in the habit of being hyper-critical, I shall concentrate on the positives.

So if that offends you, well, you can do one!

Not withstanding the clinical finishing of Lukas Podolski, what struck me was the defensive shape and discipline shown by defenders who had finished 2011-12 by conceding a total of 49 EPL goals, occasionally in comical circumstances.

Are we seeing the beginnings of the influence of Steve Bould and Neil Banfield????

Arsene fielded all of his big money purchases in the starting XI, and the influence of Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla could be clearly seen during the first half.

Santi looked comfortable on the ball and retained possession against much bigger and more physical opponents, a useful quality to have with Stoke RFU on the horizon. He gave me the impression of a midfield orchestrator, someone who can hold onto the ball and relieve pressure on our defence if need be. Also someone who could evolve into the heartbeat of our team, the brains of our team, a player who can dictate the tempo, and drive us forward.

He looks a gem…

Olivier Giroud on another day could have had a hat-trick, but FC Koln’s teenage goalkeeper seemed to save all his best saves for our new French striker, preventing the big man from opening his Arsenal account. Giroud reminds me little of Alan Smith. A tall mobile intelligent centre-forward, with a sure touch who will provide Wenger with the attacking variety we lacked 12 months ago.

His aerial threat will give more of our opponents something different to think about from Arsenal corners, free-kicks and general play.

Another top class addition to what is fast, beginning to look, like a trophy winning squad.

Finally Lukas Podolski, here is a man on a mission.

He looks highly motivated and just the type of tough hard-nut forward who’ll love the challenge of giving opposing defenders sleepless nights. Direct, but also intelligent, as shown as he was involved in 3 of the 4 goals Arsenal scored.

A provider of clinical passes as well as a clinical taker of goals.

The next big fans favourite????

“Lukas Podolski, he scores when he wants”, as the song went, in Koln…

It was great to see Mertesaker fit again, he fitted in seamlessly alongside Vermaelen and flicked on in Bouldy style, for the first goal.

Andre Santos also had the look of a man who had spent most of the summer ‘On the Salads’…

All the 23 players on display looked fit and raring to goal, well 22 of them.

RVP had the look of a man who had had his nose pushed out of joint, despite wearing the captain’s armband. That’s what you get for allowing yourself to be manipulated by money-motivated agents Robin…!

The first goal followed a slick move, with Giroud’s low shot being pushed wide for a corner.

Well Arsenal are pretty rubbish at corners aren’t we…?

Not anymore we aren’t..!

Mertesacker met the corner at the near post, flicked it on, and Vermaelen came steaming in to score with a firm header.

Ah all our yesterdays I mused, Bouldy on the near post, a delicate flick on with Tony Adams meeting it on the far post to thump home…

More of this to come me thinks, maybe a couple at the Britannia Rugby Ground, now that is a very satisfying thought…

Koln had hardly recovered from the shock, when another Arsenal corner led to the 2nd goal. That’s right, another corner, I’m typing this and can hardly believe it myself…

Mertesacker’s flick on was collected and controlled by Podolski, who was facing away from goal. Quick as a flash, Podolski laid the ball onto the onrushing Oxlade-Chamberlain, who drove into the box.

AOC skipped past one challenge before another Koln defender clumsily shoved him over. The ref checked with his linesman, before pointing to the spot.

Cue the whistles and cat-call as the ex-Koln hero stepped up to take the penalty and Podolski dispatched the ball into the net as only a German can.

A low-key clench of his fist and then back to business. No classless Adebayor type celebrations by our man.

Koln then missed their best chance of the half, when one of their forwards fired wide. He should have scored, but he didn’t, so calm down you hyper-critics.

Two minutes later and a Walcott run and pull-back saw another goal bound shot from Giroud saved.

Mon Dieu Olivier!

A Cazorla corner was met by a looping goalbound header from Giroud, again saved. That was the 4th top class save from Koln’s teenage goalkeeper, at least 3 of them against Giroud.

With half-time approaching Podolski again was heavily involved. His thoughtful pass put Gibbs in for a dangerous overlap.
Podolski then sprinted into the box to meet Gibbs smart low pull-back, before crashing home his 2nd and Arsenal’s 3rd goal…

Half-time 0-3 to the visitors.

Podolski was the only survivor from the 1st half as Wenger made 10 changes.

Serge Gnabry made a useful cameo before both he and Podolski were pulled off to be replaced by Chamakh and RVP…

Just before Podolski was substituted, he laid on an incisive pass for Gervinho to burn-up the Koln right-back. Gerv dribbled into the box, beating his right-back again, before smashing home Arsenal’s 4th goal. I believe that the Koln right-back was last seen in Gervinho’s pocket at London Airport…

Arsenal could have racked up 3 or 4 more goals, with Gerv and Arshavin going close, but you’ve gotta be happy with 4-0 and a clean sheet?!

Even you hyper-critics…

Now lets bear in mind, this squad still has to come back ; Arteta, Ramsey, Frimpong, Wilshere, Sagna and Rosicky. I don’t know about you lot, but I think that’s a pretty strong squad being assembled by Arsene Wenger.

Are the financial shackles off???

Maybe one or two more quality signings will tell us more.

I get the feeling that we Gooners are in for a very good season.

‘Wenger Out’ – I don’t think we’ll be hearing that either…….
