Will it be ‘Arsenal haven’t won the league for thirteen years……?

Morning all.

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League for twelve years and boy don’t the media like to remind us every day and it’s quite likely that when May arrives, they’ll all enjoy adding another year to that tally. As Utd, City and that ghastly West London club have changed managers, Arsenal as a club, stand by Arsene Wenger. The manager of the other mentioned clubs are spending as much money as they are allowed in order to build ‘their’ squad. Jurgen Klopp too, he’s now settled and by the time the new campaign kicks off, he’ll have a squad full of players he wants rather than a squad simply inherited from Brenda Rogers.

Arsene Wenger however, has just signed one experienced outfield player, one young defender and a striker from Japan. Hardly much to get too excited about, certainly not for the media. They want to see big names through the door, millions of pounds spent as they play football manager in the back pages when writing ‘5 strikers Arsenal could sign’ or ‘ten defenders Arsene could do with’. But all the time, they probably no very little about the man they suggest, other than what they’ve researched on the internet. I doubt they know what his temperament is like, whether he’s a team player or whether he’s a smart arse who could potentially divide what appears to be, a happy changing room at Arsenal…

The media wanted us to sign Mario Ballotelli, I think they anticipated Arsene going for Ibra too, after all, he was free but not for one minute would either of those two have fitted in at Arsenal imo as both have enormous egos and we as a club, don’t need that. Football seems to be about them, rather than them and their team-mates too. But no, the media believe they would have been perfect for Arsenal, so perfect, we’d have won the league with one of them in the side as we are so desperate for a striker and anyone will do.

Except anyone won’t do. He has to be right, he has to be different to Ollie, he has to be much better than Walcott (cough), Akpom and the guy from Japan and yes, that might mean spending big but the club has money. We can all name names, that part is easy but Arsene Wenger seems to go for nice players who will do as their asked and not cause a fuss on or off the pitch. That’s certainly how it looks to me, however, I could of course, be very very wrong. But seldom do Arsenal players hit the headlines for the wrong reasons, other than Szczesny, Bendtner of late and occasionally Wilshere, but two of those didn’t last long, not really and as Szczesny heads back to Italy, I doubt he’ll ever return.

As for the defenders, the media again come up with their own list of ‘perfect’ signings for Arsenal, but the same rule applies here as it does for strikers, they probably haven’t done much homework, other than to search the internet and come up with a few big names, because big names mean big money and they want Arsenal to spend plenty because only spending millions will bring success.

No, signing the right players, having a balanced squad and doing good things with that squad brings success, not just throwing money around like a kid in a sweet shop. We haven’t got a balanced squad imo, the midfield has finally been sorted out but two or even three more signings – a striker, experienced defender and a winger with pace would make us much stronger and better balanced. You guys might think differently, but that’s fine, we don’t always agree in life.

Leicester won the league because Ranieri had the right players, players who worked hard for each other, players who were united as a group. They didn’t have big names or big egos but they had a manager who tried something new and they got lucky. But you build your own luck and if you work hard, success will come.

If Arsene Wenger and his team do exactly that this coming season and we don’t get to see players put in half-hearted performances on a match day, those buffoons in the media might not get the option of writing ‘Arsenal haven’t won the league for thirteen years’……

    Good Morning Lovelies and Hunkies.

Good one Rico boss. Maybe you should write one with the headline…..Manure went 26 years without the title…..or…..Shitty went 45 years without winning it….or……who were the Chavs before Mourinho won them two on the trot.

  2. allezkev says:

Please remind me, how many years is it since Liverpool won The League…

I’ve used the term The League, because it was the Football League in 1989-90…

And let’s not start on Middlesex Hotspurs, what is it ?
    1960-61, when Wath was 25…

  3. rico says:

Couldn’t agree more Devil, but as always, it’s Arsenal the media like to name…

🙂 DB, I thin I know who you mean, they flopped at the Euros…

George, very true, but we just know that’s unlikely but if by chance we have good season with injuries, it’ll certainly help big time…

  4. rico says:

Tony Cascarino has been speaking with Sky Sports News HQ and said that his own sources in France, where he spent three seasons as a player, have assured him that Lacazette would complete his move to the Emirates before the end of the week.

    🙂

  5. allezkev says:

Whatever we may or may not feel about the club, be it Kroenke, Chips & chums, Gazides or Wenger, and who we blame, never lose sight of the fact that the majority of the Press, Media and Click Bait Websites (which aren’t run by Arsenal fans, but arse holes) all, but for a few exceptions, hate our club and never lose an opportunity to stick the knife in, like that shitbag Chris Sutton…

Just be aware of that fellas…

  6. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Morning Cousin Kev.

Is it true that when the spuddies last won the league Wath was only 25 years??? I though he was something around 45 back then.

Rico……so you reckon we will get Lacazette by Saturday??

  7. allezkev says:

Hiya Coach, I wonder if we’ll see some transfer movement when Wenger arrives back from the USA..?

It won’t surprise me if we don’t, but we live in hope…

Rico, that was a very good post btw…

  8. Wavy says:

Cascarino is np Arsenal lover. He’s one of the many sub-humans identified by Kev earlier. If he’s right he’ll be considered a ‘pundit’ if he’s wrong hell blame Wenger et al, because his source was certain, so it’ll be Arsenal’s fault and their inadequate negotiators. Win, win for Cascarino and not much of a win for the club. After all Local gazette is only a second rate French striker anyway!

Morning all. Dull and wet here.

  9. Delford Magaya says:

I am surprised with people who talk of Arsenal not winning the title for 12 years. Chelsea went for 50 years without winning a trophy until Mourinho joined them, that is when they managed to win the title but after 50 years.

  10. Robin says:

Why not bet on arsenal winning the title this season? Because you know they will always fall short towards the end of the season

  11. Hell Raising Devil says:

I read that Rico….but shrugged it off. I don’t see Griezmann as achievable. another one off the list. At over Eur100mill its impossible. Even if AW sanctioned it I doubt the club would do so.

  12. Wavy says:

Rico, didn’t Griezemann (sp) sign a new long term contract either just before or just after the Euro’s? He’ll be out of our league in terms of cost. Marvellous if we sign him but wait for Arsenal.com to pronounce!!

  13. allezkev says:

I’ve long harboured serious doubts about Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but he looked quite lively in the brief highlights I saw on YouTube of our 3-1 win over Chivas…

Walcott got in some good scoring positions, missed but at least he was there…

Not sure what to make of Holding and Chambers as a pair, I think the defensive-midfielders still don’t give our back-four enough protection. It’s a tactical thing and until Wenger addresses that problem our defence will continue to look vulnerable…

Considering that were still without most of our more effective performers, I think our team has done ok…
Ok ain’t enough to win the league I know, but as an exercise in match sharpness, it is what it is at this stage of proceedings…

  14. rico says:

DM, but they overlook other clubs lack of title wins because they only look at the here and now but how then can go on about us whilst leaving the likes of Liverpool free from criticism, beggars belief…

  15. rico says:

I think so Wavy, but perhaps that was just to increase his get out clause or to insert one.. Who knows but £84 million would have AW quaking in his boots….

  16. allezkev says:

I have to say, that the cheese on toast, with tomatoes, that I had yesterday evening, was a triumph.
    Simple, but oh so tasty…

I cannot imagine a better way to unwind, cheese on toast with a cuppa, whilst listening to the blues.

  17. Hell Raising Devil says:

The Perez rumours continue to persist. Even if Debuchy leaves I doubt whether he would want to come and play second fiddle to Bellerin.

Perez can play on both right and left. And he is more of an offensive player than a defensive one.

So imo I feel that he will be bought to play as a winger and if needs be he will be drafted in to replace Bellerin.

Last season he scored 3 and assisted 10.

  18. allezkev says:

    I ain’t sure that a full-back is such a priority Coach.
Bellerin is not injury prone fortunately, nor is Monreal.
Gibbs should be able to cover for both of them.
Holding can fill in as can Coquelin, so Debuchy could be sold without the need for a like for like replacement imo…

  19. tsgh says:

    Good read Rico.
Kev-‘I think the defensive-midfielders still don’t give our back-four enough protection. It’s a tactical thing and until Wenger addresses that problem our defence will continue to look vulnerable…’ I have to concur with that.

Apart from the defensive side the wrong pairing of Xhaka/Coq/Ramsey/Elneny will make Ozil come even deeper to pick the ball unless Xhaka and SC19 become the defacto pivote.

That will mean AW will have to earn a bit more of his salary by thinking about how to rotate the boy wonder who when fit is our best box to box player imho

  20. rico says:

Agree Kev re right and left back. Holding can play both sides too can’t he?

Much rather other areas are addressed before another left/right back…

Plus Jenks should be fit before Christmas…

  21. allezkev says:

Ginge a Vieira/Petit type combo in front of our back four is a no brainer, the rest of the midfield/attack can look after itself, but I just want to see that extra security in front of our centre-backs…

When you have the likes of Ozil, Ramsey, Santi, Wilshere you can afford to have two sitting midfielders.

I’m not sure why Wenger seems to find that so difficult to replicate, he had it before and it brought him success, so go figure???

  22. rico says:

Maybe Ivan was playing with the media about not spending big? Just a thought, and then he goes in big and get’s Griezmann…

    🙂

  23. Hell Raising Devil says:

I agree with regards the CB position Kev. Much more important than RB. But remember its AW we are talking about.

If AW gets Peres than Debuchy goes. If no Peres than Debuchy stays till January.

If AW gets a CB then Debuchy goes. No other defender and he will stay.

As I said though….Peres can play on the wings, right and left, as well……so watch this space.

  24. allezkev says:

Coach, we really need a like for like centre-back like BFG, that is a giraffe type to deal with the high ball into our box…

I guess that why I liked the links to Mustafi, as he’s a big bastard and he that German mentality.

  25. allezkev says:

Coach/Ginge, the combo isn’t as important to me, to me it is discipline, that is, don’t do a Ramsey, charging all over the place, your job is protect the defence, so stay in fcuking situ and do your job…

  26. allezkev says:

Rico, I think that that was part of the attraction of Holding as Wenger does like a versatile player…

He’s young and is gonna make mistakes, but from what I’ve seen of him it’s encouraging…

  27. Hell Raising Devil says:

German mentality Kev??? I really would love to have that in our team.

tbh if it were for me I would sell Ches and Ospina and get Horn from Cologne. He would learn a lot from Cech and would take over in three years time.

I would sell Nacho and get Hector from Cologne as well. NAcho is over 30 and would fetch a good fee atm. Hector would get the nod over Gibbs as he is superior.

I would get Shkodran mustafi for the CB position.

  28. Hell Raising Devil says:

That is one thing I noticed about Holding as well.

Don’t be surprised to see him nailing one of the CB spots at the expense of all the others and leave them to fight for the remaining place.

  29. Hell Raising Devil says:

Kev…that is why I came up with those combos……because Xhaka, Cazorla, Coqulein and Elneny are disciplined.

If AW was to get Mustafi I bet that come February onwards it will be a CB pairing of Mustafi and Holding. What about Kos you may ask??? Don’t know but I feel Holding is here to stay.

  30. scottfromoz says:

Holding could well turn out to be another case of a player who, if he cost 5 X’s much, everyone would love.
We have a few that almost everybody was against at the time, though onfield performances put that debate aside quite quickly.
Elneny is the latest, who hardly anybody was enthused about, yet now it’s a case of people hoping we find another cheap gem such as…………..Elneny 🙂 🙂
    Morning all.

  31. rico says:

To be fair Scott, most on here just said judge him once he’s played re Elneny. Probably fearing he was going to be another AW cheap flop…

  32. tsgh says:

Dev- agree with your combo of Xhaka, Cazorla, Ozil.

Kev- In the ideal world we could unearth similar giants of yester-years to look after the midfield on their own.. saying that DB10, Ljunberg, Wiltord all put in a shift defensively unlike our current Ox and Theo’s of this world…

  33. rico says:

I’m not so sure Scott. Perhaps people may have thought ‘typical Wenger signing’ but no-one really knows how a player will adapt to the PL when they move, even very expensive ones have often flopped…

  34. rico says:

Or Ramsey Ts… His defensive skills were non existent last season, yet stick him in a Wales shirt and he’s very different.

  35. Hell Raising Devil says:

Scott I am amazed that AW does not look more at the lower divisions or Europe’s little leagues. I believe that there is the next Holding, the next Elneny, the next Koscielny waiting to be discovered.

Yes we might pay 25mill for someone like Mustafi but I would never sniff at the cost of Holding since I believe that he will make it.

The same goes for players who have come through the club’s youth system.

I will be very happy if Akpom makes it.

  36. scottfromoz says:

Some Arsenal fans here, as well as everywhere else, Rico…..
Reading my own comment back, I realised one thing-Wenger should trust himself when spending up.
Ozil, Sanchez……when he does spend, look what he’s bought.
Xhaka will prove a ripper purchase as well, I reckon.

  37. rico says:

Ok Scott.. But I care more about who he signs and how good they are, bugger the price high or low. As I said in the post, it’s not about the price, it’s about getting the right player for the position needed…

  38. Hell Raising Devil says:

Rico you are just 1/4 right about Peres.

Yes he does play for Torino in the serie A. Yes he does play at RB. But…….he is equally adept at playing LB and is also very good when playing as RW and LW.

He can play in any formation…..4-4-2……4-2-3-1…….3-5-2.

I see him regularly as I watch Italian football.

And at 18million Eur we will be getting a good player. Personally I would offer them Debuchy and money for him.

  39. Obi says:

Last year the season went south when Santi got injured simply because the ball stopped moving rapidly. Teams were able to key on Ozil which meant he had to come even deeper to get the ball. And this is TE reason for preferring a Santi, Ozil and Xhaka combo – park the bus if you want to, we will take our chances.
Btw Scott, Elnery to me was not a surprise because I had watched him several times in Basel/ Europa games and for Egypt where imho he has been their best player. I also remember other raving about him after his performance against Liverpool. I was surprise that we took that long to sign him. You are right, the cost of a player is irrelevant, thats the reason I will take Ben Yedder over Lacazette any day. Goal TV, Univisonand Bein Sports show lower division games from South America, Mexico and Europe here. There is an abundance of talents in these games and I have often wonder why scouts are not all over these guys.

  40. tsgh says:

    Agreed Rico.

I am with you Obi…I think Le Coq will find himself a bit more in defence this season. I think his reaction type of play did not suit the need for a ‘quarter back’ in our set up

  41. rico says:

We’ve missed the boat re Yedder Obi, yet I thought he’d be the one Arsene would go for. Perhaps there’s more to the Griezmann stories than just idle rumours, or perhaps I’m just hoping a bit too much…

  42. Hell Raising Devil says:

If Griezmann comes I hope he will not be shafted to the right or left but played in his proper position.

  43. Hell Raising Devil says:

Griezmann on the left and Alexis on the right. Ozil/Aaron behind the CF. Xhaka and Cazorla manning the midfield. Frightening.

But I still think that Griezmann should play centrally.

  44. tsgh says:

Dev- with an English CB plus left footed DM.. who knows but winning EPL is not far off…

I think Greizmann on the lhs with Monreal behind him and Xhaka tacking a bit inside left to cover Greizmann when the team is on the offensive and SC19 doing what Gabi does for Ath as the pivote will be sensational… one can only wish…

I think Greizmann would have played on the lhs more if Valbuena was available in euros…

    where is Sir-Cream -A-lot btw?

  45. Herb's Army says:

    Hi Rico and the House.

Arsenal are always big news because we’re embedded in the Establishment. The BoD’s is made up of aristocratic Old Etonians – or it used to be – which I think creates an air of triumphalism amongst certain journalists and traditional newspapers.
And the more the media lay it on, the more Arsenal pander to their wishes and play the part of the ‘wounded animal’. That’s the reason Adrian Durham’s ‘Daily Arsenal’ became so popular on TalkSport. Absolutely nothing has changed at the club since he stopped doing it. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear Arsenal were deliberately failing because of the publicity and keeping their brand in the headlines.
There’s no doubt Arsenal should have done better and should be doing better, but we’re like a ‘Spitting Image’ cartoon character that the press glorify in lampooning.
Chelsea don’t get the same criticism because they’re noveau riche (new money), same for City, Tottenham don’t get it because Arsenal have always been perceived as being a much bigger club, Liverpool and United don’t get it because both clubs have experienced great personal tragedies, as well as being the top two clubs in England in terms of their trophy hauls.
Arsenal are the architects of their own negative media perception, but maybe if they did things the way everyone expects and actually tried to live up to their perceived status, they’d have nothing interesting to talk about.

  46. Rick says:

    Evening Rico and the House.
Another great post Rico followed by some very good comments.

This is your headline for next May
Arsenal end 13 year wait with title win.

Tesco are already increasing their stock of humble pie for the media.

  47. rico says:

Wouldn’t we just Herb. I’d so love the media to have their words shoved right down their throat! Horrid and anti Arsenal lot…

  48. allezkev says:

Herb, was it not Herbert Chapman and then George Allison who were the originators of the policy of ensuring that Arsenal were in the news…
No other team had a Daily Arsenal type feature on Talk Sport, because no other team had such wide appeal….

    It’s a complement of sorts…

  49. allezkev says:

When it comes to the biggest club in England it’s ManU of course…

But I’d say that Arsenal have superseded Liverpool now despite all their trophies and are now the second biggest club in England.
No title in 26 years and being out of Europe has seen Liverpool fade despite all their luvvies in the media…

ManC and Chelsea will both revert to being top 8 clubs once the money has dried up, as it surely will one day…

And the rest are, well, the rest…

  50. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Date….May 2017

    EPL winners …..AFC

Journalist…..Mr Mourinho, what do you make of AFC winning the title.

Mourinho….you can be sure that this year AW bought the title. He bought Griezmann for 84mill, Lacazette for 40mill, Xhaka for 30mill, Shkodran for 25mill and even Holding for 2mill. That is a lot of money.

How much did Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Ibrahimovic cost will not be mentioned.

  51. Herb's Army says:

Hi Kev, yes, Chapman made Arsenal the talk of the town, which was carried on splendidly by Allison. And of course ‘The Great Highbury Stadium Mystery’
The thing that sets Liverpool apart from Arsenal, Kev, is Europe. They’ve stood up on the big stage and won five European Cups (and they were robbed in 1985 against Platini and Juve).
    That’s the dichotomy of Arsenal.
If Europe devised a ‘Super League’ would Arsenal be invited?
If it were based on finance, we’re a guaranteed shoo-in, if it were based on football achievements, we’d be no-where near.

  52. Herb's Army says:

Thanks HRD, it’s difficult to find some positivity supporting Arsenal, particularly with a divided fan-base.
Strong arguments and opinions on both sides, contradictions from the club every twelve months, it’s all a bit of a horrible mess that no-one inside the club wants to take responsibility for.

  53. Micko says:

And it doesn’t help when there’s no-one out there that can improve our squad either, see Pep made his 5th signing of the summer today, same shit…different circus.

  54. allezkev says:

Herb, good point re: a European Superliga, but Arsenal would be in it for exactly the same reason Man City would be in it and that Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa wouldn’t – money…

Arsenal’s record in European competition is a fcuking scandle mate a total embarrassment….

For a club of Arsenal’s size, our record is a complete and utter failure.
And has always be a mystery to me…

  55. Lee says:

Micko you’re always so negative, it’s not like Arsene has left the squad short before is it? Or relied on perms crocks or had faith in players that should never wear the canon on their chest….

There’s no pleasing some people! ?

I too always enjoy Herb’s posts, did you know that Kev went to school with Chapman? That’ll cost me 2 & 2 at Keely’s! 😉

  56. Lee says:

Leicester star Riyad Mahrez has met with Arsene Wenger and agreed to join Arsenal, according to reports in Algeria.

Last season’s player of the year has been heavily linked with a move to The Emirates despite Claudio Ranieri insisting the forward will stay with the champions.

Now though Algerian outlet Le Buteur claims Mahrez has agreed to join Arsenal for £100,000 a week. In a lengthy article they insist that Wenger has had a meeting with the player and his representatives and a deal has been hammered out between the parties.

The Gunners are not keen on paying Mahrez a six-figure weekly wage, but Leicester are ready to offer the player a new contract in the region of £100,000 a week. The 25-year-old, who has three years to run on his current deal, has reportedly rejected that new deal.

Le Buteur claim that Wenger has met with Mahrez & his agent and convinced him to join Arsenal for £100k/wk. #afc pic.twitter.com/M0x2ZrxWzX

    — UberArsenal™ (@UberAFC) August 2, 2016

Leicester meanwhile are believed to be annoyed that Wenger was in the stands during their 4-0 friendly loss to Paris Saint-Germain over the weekend, but that is believed to have been leaked to the British tabloids.

And the remainder of the article purports to reports in the “British press”, while they reference an “unnamed British journalist”, who has reportedly told them Mahrez will be an Arsenal player by the end of the transfer window.

Wenger has admitted he is scouring the market for new players. but has so far refused to comment on specific individuals.

“The best way to conclude transfers is not to talk about them, which is very difficult in the press conference!

“We are on the market but I don’t want to talk specifically about any player because that makes it more difficult for me – and it’s difficult enough,” said Wenger.

Unfortunately “Le Buteur” is Algeria’s version of the Sun! 🙁

I did read somewhere that this summer alone, Arsenal have been reported to be signing 92 different players…

    Isn’t it exciting… ?

  59. rico says:

Isn’t it embarrassing when you here the pundits on SS’s say something like ‘when you look at the top seven clubs and how they’ve done their transfer business, take Arsenal out of that, they’ll all be expecting to win the PL’….

  60. frednerk says:

    So the average Joe Public

  62. Lee says:

He’s got to be more ruthless with these players BUT Wenger is too nice and that’s not changing anytime soon……..whereas that vertically challenged, self-opinionated, eye-poking, self named fucktard is the polar opposite! #justsaying

£25.000 a week would have done me.
I would have promised not to say a
    negative word about the club.
    As a fan it’s a bit different.

  65. Lee says:

I think players want to join Arsenal, I think the Wenger factor is definitely waning. It’s not like he’s been a roaring success in the PL or Cl is it?

  66. rico says:

I think some choose to leave because of him too Scott. Either his lack of ambition in the transfer window, on the pitch or because he doesn’t win much these days….

  67. Wath says:

Think players choose Arsenal and state the Wenger factor because it’s cushy, they know he will wrap them in cotton wool and make sure they treated like royalty..! Sad but true..!

  68. scottfromoz says:

Lee, plenty have stated he’s a massive reason they join.
Rico, which ones have left and done better elsewhere, though?
2 FA cups in the last 2 and a bit years isn’t much?
Damn, we have high standards 🙂

  69. rico says:

Exactly Fred, players won’t say anything bad about the club/manager whilst they are earning a nice amount of money….

    Hi Wath…

  70. Wath says:

The only ones with high standards Scott are the fans, shame the club doesn’t, 5th richest sporting “franchise” on the planet and all they seem to aspire to is a massive bank balance….

Three FA Cups in 12 years is hardly living up to expectations is it…. Then again the club is run in a fit and proper way so the powers that be are always telling us..! Yippee…. All whilst fleecing the fans with false bravado year after year.

  71. potter says:

which ones have left and done better elsewhere, though?

RVP for starters Scott and Fabregas hasn’t done too bad either.

  72. scottfromoz says:

Wath, 3 in 12 sounds a lot different to 2 in 3, though, doesn’t it?
Rico, RVP had one great season then ended up on the bench in Turkey, but still he did what he set out to.
Plenty more have stated they love playing for Wenger-why shouldn’t we believe them?

  73. Wath says:

Well it’s easy to make that look good mate if you gonna ignore the whole picture but in reality your only as good as your last season which we won fuck all so it’s then zero for zero in that case eh…!

  74. Lee says:

Yeah, but it’s the 2 FA Cups in 11yrs that doesn’t sit well with me, not really challenging for the PL in that time too or just making the numbers up in CL for that time too!

We should definitely should of won more imho.

  75. Wath says:

The truth is you can make any stats look good or bad depending on your point of view the bottom line is as stated for the 5th richest sporting “franchise” on the planet we totally under achieve and consistently are nowhere near competitive enough…! There is no papering over that one or tarting it up with a nice fresh coat of paint it’s how it is..!

  76. Wath says:

Had a chat to mate yesterday who spoke to Lauren, he asked him if he hated that shower of shit down the road…. Lauren smiled and replied of course I hate them, my mate said “why” he said because of David Dein, he spoke to all the new players, he told us the history of the club and the rivalry with the “vermin” and we also had Pat Rice who never let us forget what it means to the fans…….

Made me think who at the club now does that sort of thing…? who tells the players of the history of the club and the rivalries and what the fans expect etc etc…. No one cos none of them actually have a fucking clue themselves…!

No wonder half the fans and players think the Chavs are our biggest rivals…!

  77. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Afternoon Lovelies and Hunkies.

Acc2NN we will soon land Mahrez. But until I see him play I will not believe it.

Att 140Kpw Theo should know by now what is his best position. Imo it should be at AFC bookshop signing copies of books for kids. And stay away from the pitch as possible.

I feel that as it is now the wings should be occupied by…..Alexis, OX, Iwobi, Campbell, Gnabry, Danny (even on one leg), Reine Adelaide, the tea lady, Rico, Kev, Wath…….and if backs to wall Theo.

And if we get Mahrez everyone drops back a position.

  78. Adam says:

The ‘art’ of management is surely multi-faceted and different managers are either delegators or not. From the outside it looks as if our players sometimes appear as if they are just coasting when you would ideally like to see a bit more edge. Perhaps Wenger is too old school for today’s footballers. He certainly hasn’t been doing enough for the past decade or so, as our lack of the PL title will confirm. If we are to be successful he probably has to change a bit. Whether he can do so or not will be interesting.

  79. frednerk says:

    Thats why we need leaders
    Wenger was very lucky with
the players we had and the players
in got in when he first arrived
    Example:
    Chavs how many managers have
that shower of sh*t got through
    but always win stuff.
Manager changes left right and centre
    players coming and going.

Only one Geezer has seen it all.
    Leader..call him what you like.

  80. allezkev says:

Rico; 10.04, yep it was on there, not sure how accurate the 92 figure is, but it’s gotta be close to that rediculous number…

    Right I’m off for a Keely pie… ?

  81. Le Coq Monster says:

    Afternoon all .

So Theo wants to be a winger after demanding to be a striker !………..hahaha…………….listen son !, you aint no great shakes as a striker and not much good as a winger !………they track back nowadays and tackle !………oh and you have to be able to dribble !…………..and I dont mean having a sneaky admiring look at Giroud`s hampton in the showers !.

Can anyone tell me if Lacazette is french for…….The Cassette ?………..if so, is he a VHS or a Betamax and does he come with Dolby Surround Sound ?

Bloody Hell !!!……….rumours of Draxler wants us !…………The Cassette wants us !……….Mahrez wants us !………………………………..and Griezman too !………………..how can none of these be true !……..title nailed on !. 😀

  82. rico says:

They probably listed the links from the last ten years Kev…. lol

Thing is though LC, does Wenger want any of them? I sure hope so.

  83. frednerk says:

    Just heard from a
    very reliable sauce(Barbecue),
that Walnut has changed his mind
    again.

He wants to be a centre-Half or
    a sweeper.
    When training stated to-day
    the players were asking wenger
    where theoooo was.

He will be out when the changing rooms
    are clean.

  84. Le Coq Monster says:

True Rico !……………………….us fans dont know who decent players are !……………………if we were paid £8M per year we`d be experts !………………….I`d have to phone Arsene to tell me if Messi is any good as I have no idea !…………………..so I`m afraid that you lot are as bad as me, you know nothing !…………bunch of rubbish scouts !. hahaha

  85. rico says:

    Lauren:

“Don’t get me wrong. I respect Olivier Giroud and he has an important part to play next season through the goals he does score,” he said.

“But you need people with ‘charisma’. It’s more than about scoring goals, you need a striker with the X-factor… with charisma. And despite being a fantastic player Giroud doesn’t have that.”

    🙂

  86. rico says:

I’m sure Wenger knows which players are decent, his problem is not getting deals done.. He ponders too much and is afraid to spend too much money… Not sure why though, it’s not like it’s his.

  87. Le Coq Monster says:

Would it be inconcievable to think that Wenger`s salary is partly based on Arsenal`s turnover/profits and that it is more in Arsene`s personal benefit not to over spend than it is in our clubs trophy ambitions to spend more……………………someone deep in AFC PLC accounts will know for sure !…………….

  88. Lee says:

LC, I reckon you could definitely be on to something there!

On another note my kids are trying to drag me to Boardmasters in Newquay, do you know anything about it???

  89. Hell Raising Devil says:

If Draxler joins then it will be clear that AW sees him as a CF. He has it all. Two good feet, 6ft 2ins, speed, is a good passer of the ball plus he has a very strong shot. AW did it with TH and he will do it again with Draxler.

If Mahrez comes and AFC fail to get Lacazette or Icardi you can bet on it that Draxler will be the one who AW gets and transforms.

  90. Hell Raising Devil says:

Unless AW plans to put Alexis up front with Ozil behind him and Draxler on the left and Mahrez on the right.

    Mahrez, Ozil, Draxler
    Alexis

    Ox, Aaron, Iwobi
    Ollie

    Still……..its all ifs and buts

  91. Obi says:

The issue is not whether players come or go because of AW. The issues is even when players want to come AW is low balling bids therefore the player goes somewhere else. For example Ben Yedder goes to Seville for 9m euros Arsenal bids 7m. So I think we tend to lose more players because of AW unrealistic evaluation.

  92. Le Coq Monster says:

    I`ve never been Lee !
Although I have to drive through it all to deliver, pot luck whether I`m stuck in traffic or clean sweep through !.
I love the coastal road from Padstow going that way to Newquay, there`s some great little beaches all along it where I deliver to……………Trevone, Constatine, Treyarnon, Harlyn, Porthcothan, Bedruthan, Mawgan Porth, Watergate Bay, Porth………spoilt for choice if you want some sand !. hahaha

    http://www.boardmasters.co.uk/

  93. Le Coq Monster says:

Obi……………….lucky I`m not manager as I would have given £12M for Ben Yedder…………Kroenke would have been pulling his hair out !.

  94. Le Coq Monster says:

Never trust a man who wears a syrup, Kev !…………….they could be concealing any manner of weapon underneath it !……….a WMD !……Walmart Maple Donut !
You have to be dodgy if you`re a billionaire and wear a syrup !. He could pull woman just for his wealth and then he could have as many hair transplants as he wanted……I mean…how many Beavers are there in North America !

  95. Le Coq Monster says:

I actually think that if Man had not been the most dominant force on the planet the world would have been run by Beavers !………………….what other animal is as intelligent as the hairy beaver ?………………..builds dams, canals and even lodges……………some of which are more habitable than some of the Travel Lodges I have satyed in !……………………a world dominated by Beavers !.

  96. Obi says:

LC, I could see this already, next year if we play Seville in the CL AW saying how he “nearly signed” him…. of course it will probably be after he scores 2 goals against us….lol.

  97. Micko says:

rico 12.36, now your talking !

Fred 1.23, think you’ll find he’s just behind Le Coq in the pecking order for centre half closely followed by Holding, your sauce needs a good grilling mate.

  98. rico says:

He’s probably had the most money available Devil, so he should but compare him to other top clubs of late, he’s tight.

  99. Hell Raising Devil says:

Ospina has decided to stay and fight for the mumber 1 spot. That is good as the competition will be good. However I still think that AW should sell him and Ches and go for Timo Horn of Cologne. The latter is only 22 years and can be Arsenal keeper in 3/4 years time. He will be a top keeper.

Having said that I like Ospina as well. So I am happy with his decision

  100. Herb's Army says:

The two recent FA Cup wins need to be put into perspective.
At the end of January 2014, Arsenal were top of the PL, in a position of strength with just 14 games to go. We were eight points ahead of the Luis Suarez inspired Liverpool. We’d already lost Walcott for the season after his injuy in the 3rd Rnd FA Cup tie with Tottenham, Giroud picked up an injury too – (which is the reason Arsenal were left with Sanogo to start against Bayern in CL) –
so the natural reaction is to protect your lead and build on it. The world was screaming at Wenger to bring in a striker (well, the Arsenal-loving world),
The pivotal game in the 2014 FA Cup for me, was the 5th Rnd tie with Liverpool at The Emirates.
Just a week before Liverpool had blown Arsenal away 5-1 at Anfield, and they were 5-0 up before they took their foot off the gas.
Arsenal were fortunate 2-1 winners, but at 2-1 the Ox blatantly brought down Suarez and Liverpool were denied a stone-wall penalty. But this game was all about salvaging some pride having meekly accepted their CL fate, and watching in horror as another PL season was going as most predicted, because Wenger didn’t bring in the much-needed additions.
After Liverpool, our FA Cup opponents were Everton, Wigan now (2014-now) of the Championship who took us all the way to penalties, and Hull in the final, who took a two-goal lead before Arsenal finally woke up.
But 2014 is defined by Wenger casually surrendering the title when he had it in his grasp. Putting out Arsenal teams that couldn’t score in 180 minutes football against Moyes’ United when everyone else in the top six had beaten them, or giving up on winning our CL group by sending a virtual second-string to Napoli, or watching us get dismantled at Anfield and destroyed at Chelsea.
Or watching a nice eight-point lead over Liverpool evaporate, until within the space of eleven games and three left to play, we couldn’t catch Liverpool.
Significantly, Wenger was rewarded for his spectacular failure with a nice new bumper contract.
But surely he would learn from those experiences, and by signing a new contract was making a statement that he could take Arsenal to the next level, right? Well two years into that contract we are as far away as is humanly imaginable.
After being almost there, surely 2015 offered realistic hope of finally getting the job done. But no, it became all about Chelsea, with Wenger and Arsenal for the umpteenth time being on the peripherals. But hey look, we’ve got another shiny FA Cup to celebrate. We don’t have to settle for wildly celebrating fourth spot, we’ve got a real cup! Again, in football’s bigger picture, it’s a consolation prize. Reading almost did what Wigan had done a year earlier by taking us to extra-time, and Villa, as we witnessed in the PL were just there to be beat. Even Theo had a decent game, which tells you how poor the opposition were.
Could Arsenal create history by becoming the first club since the 1800’s to win the FA Cup three years in a row? Not when you have an egotistical manager who is more concerned about his own personal records than he is Arsenal’s. We could and should quite comfortably have beaten Watford at home in the QF’s, but Wenger rested key players, gave Watford all the incentive they needed, and with his own personal FA Cup record written in history, didn’t give Arsenal’s chances a second thought.
This is a competition where Wenger has repeatedly used his second-string. His Arsenal side went out at home in the 5th Rnd a couple of seasons back to Championship side Blackburn so that he could rest players to subsequently get knocked out of the CL by Bayern a few days later.
Wenger decides how important the FA Cup is to Arsenal, and he used it to gloss over abject failure in 2014. Normal services were resumed this year.

  101. Herb's Army says:

Hi Lee, cheers mate, and thanks for the earlier complimentary comment.
i don’t look to fight or argue with folk, it’s more about being honest about where Arsenal are and what they represent, and as long as people refuse to face up to it by pretending everything is rosy in the garden, the club will continue to under-achieve and shamelessly rinse the supporters.

  102. allezkev says:

Great post Herb, I agreed with everything you wrote, that 5-1 at Anfield was disgraceful and didn’t Arsenal lose 6-0 to Chelsea that season, fcuking shambolic, as Scott knows because he was there.

Wengers tenure as Arsenal manager, will always be tainted by, what I believe, were avoidable calamities brought about by his arrogance tactical nativity and inability to adapt and think on his feet, and don’t mention his parsimony in the transfer market and complete lack of decisiveness when in a position to bring in the quality talent we needed and still need to compete…

Arsenal are like the BEF, Lions led by Donkeys…

  103. ScottfromOz says:

Let’s HOPE Wenger has deliberately built the squad up slowly in recent years.
He’s bought quality at a young age so when the squad is complete, it’ll have a few years of their best football ahead of them.
This theory might be proven if, and only if, he tops the squad up right now.
I’d prefer us to get a top winger and striker as a priority, and a CB afterwards if possible.
    Dreaming???
Maybe, but don’t any of you dare tell me you know what goes through Wengers mind, because I doubt he tells himself what he’s thinking 🙂

  104. Wavy says:

Sadly, as his advanced years may imply, he probably can’t remember what he had for breakfast, let alone who or what he needs to improve his current squad. Furthermore he’ll not be able to remember who he’s even got in his current squad! Why would he want to buy a new CD when he still has Tony Adams or a winger when Overmars has now become a world beater?
Ah, happy days that are no more!

    Moons up. I’m off baying………

  105. Herb's Army says:

Whatever goes through his mind, Scott, his abilities as a football manager have been vastly over exaggerated and tolerated for far too long. The two seperate halves of his time at Arsenal – Highbury and The Emirates – have barely any correlation. And he’s been stuck by a tactical conundrum that he created with Fabregas. He refuses to go back to the 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 that was ‘The Invincibles’ and persists with brittle technically gifted light-weight players who just don’t have the heart or desire to fight for you in the trenches or dig in when it really matters.
Some of his choices of centre-halves have been baffling to say the least. Stepanovs, Tavlaridis, Lydersen, Cygan, Senderos, Djourou, Squillaci, Silvestre, even Vermaelen looked dreadful in an Arsenal shirt. The three I’ll give him some credit for are Sol Campbell, Toure and Koscielny. Mertesacker is in the ‘okay but not top-class’ category, and the jury is still out on Gabriel Paulista. Can anyone explain why William Gallas wore the number 10 shirt? How many shockingly poor centre-backs do you have to buy before someone politely takes you to one side and tells you to give up? It’s like a revolving door of sycophantic insanity.
And there is something fundamentally wrong with the set-up when you accumulate as many soft-tissue injuries and problems as Arsenal. No club in the PL lose as many key players as Arsenal, or for the same length of time. Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky spent almost all of their Arsenal careers nursing injury, Danny Welbeck had no injury problems at United, Jack Wilshere can’t put a run of five games together, on and on the madness and unaccountability goes on. Are there any Arsenal players who haven’t been victims of lengthy injuries?
It is absolutely incredible that a global institution the size of Arsenal operate in such a blase, naive and frankly, bizarre manner considering the business they’re in.

  106. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Morning Lovelies and Hunkies

Take a look at the table below.

    Longest gap between titles…….
Tottenham (2 titles)..55 years (and still counting) 😛
    Chelsea(5)…………… 50 years
    Man City (4)………….45 years
    Manutd (20)………….41 years
    Man Utd……………….26 years
    Liverpool (18)………..26 years
    Arsenal (13)………….18 years
    Arsenal………………..12 years

  107. Hell Raising Devil says:

The cheek of it all. Teasing Arsenal because of failing to land title for 12 years.

When looking at the table it is easily noticeable that even the longest Arsenal went without the title is still the lowest of the so called top 6. At least the spuddies are top in something. lol

  108. Hell Raising Devil says:

It will take us a massive 14 years to even equal the record of the dippers. The thing is that even if we go that long without the title, who is to say that the dippers will not increase theirs. lol

  109. Hell Raising Devil says:

And we can rest assured that the top of the table will always be taken by the spuddies.

45 more years and it will be 100 years since spuds won the league. I pray that I will still be alive to see it.

  110. rico says:

Some cracking comments there Herb, I wish you’d emailed me them, I could have used either as a post… 🙂

    Morning Devil and all..

  111. Lee says:

Morning Rico and all…………do you all think we are getting a Striker/Winger and CB?

Today I do, I’m half full! Brudder don’t urinate on my fireworks! 🙂

  112. scottfromoz says:

    Morning all.
Herb, I’ve always said Wenger was over rated as far as tactics are concerned.
He was ahead of his time when it came to professionalism, nutrition and scouting but the world caught up.
For that, he should be congratulated, not ridiculed, and that’s one thing that disgusts me with so many fans.
    Morning all.

  113. rico says:

Morning Lee. I reckon we’ll get a striker and CB. I’m convinced Marhez is about getting a new deal where he is but you never know.

I just wish Wenger would get on with it…

  114. rico says:

Scott, he was praised at the time but since then, he’s stagnated. No longer is he plucking talent from overseas, certainly not as much as he used to and he’s left the squad short for far too long and as for the nutrition, I still truly believe that what the players eat has a lot to do with why we suffer so many injuries during the season.

As you say, other clubs have caught up but in the meantime, Wenger has moved forward…

  115. scottfromoz says:

Rico, has he stagnated, or as I suggested, others caught up?
    Its all opinions, I guess.
His transfer dealings is something I’ll never understand, though.

  116. Adam says:

    Morning Rico, Brudder and all.
Prevarication is an apt description I think. From the outside that is. What is actually happening at the club we can only speculate. But we tend to take snippets from the press and bend them to our own uninformed views. Whatever the situation it seems clear that things take too long to be entirely rational.

  117. rico says:

Stagnated imo Scott. Yes others have caught up, but why, for a man so intelligent and who professes to know more about the game than most, hasn’t he tried something different?

As far as transfers go, I’d say he’s gone backwards…

  118. tsgh says:

Good morning Rico, Scott and all…

Not sure why if a deal is taken across the line its always attributed to IG, whilst when deals fall through its due to AW treating club money as his…
then again it fits the narrative for folks so…

  119. allezkev says:

    Morning All

    Morning Rico

Herb, George Graham signed Lydersen, just saying!

But that’s quite a list of rather ordinary centre-backs.
Do you remember Luzhny at CB…?
We had him there for the 2003 FACup Final…
He actually didn’t do too bad as it goes, but our defence has often been shambolic.

Sorry Lee, I can’t see Wenger bringing in three more quality players.
I bet we end up with Jonny Evans…

  120. tsgh says:

The lose at the bridge 2 seasons ago was pure comedy… with Gibbs getting sent off mistakenly instead of the Ox… plus Ox being so poor playing in CM I couldn’t restrain myself sitting in the home section I had to leave at half time… That was the day I lost complete hope in Ox becoming a WC player..imo

  121. allezkev says:

Rico, I don’t think that Wenger has gone backwards at all, with respect, I think he is where he’s always been on transfers, it’s just during his Highbury era, or for most of it, he had David Dein doing the deals…

If Wenger and not Dein, had been in charge during that time, it’s doubtful that we would have got half of the players we eventually had.
That’s possibly no Henry or Pires or Campbell or Lauren or Reyes or Wiltord or, well we can speculate…

    Basically half of the Invincibles

  122. tsgh says:

Kev- Luhzny the horse… I remember him at Wembley against us in our first season in the UCL under AW… he looked a revelation…

Luzhny and my fave Stepanovs’ centre back pairing at Old Trafford in the 6-2 lose will forever remain with me…

Of course with Grimandi as the CDM in front of those 2…

  123. allezkev says:

Ginge, that’s an interesting point you make re: Gazides and Wenger.

But to me, sorry to labour the point, the fact that Dein got transfers over the line and since his demise the fact that getting deals done is such an issue, speaks for itself…

You see, I imagine that Dein enjoyed the cut and thrust and the challenge of dealing with agents and getting the deals done, it’s in his DNA as a business man. But Wenger, it seems, cannot deal with it, hence the dithering and penny-pinching…

I know that the Media love to bash Arsenal, but this doesn’t seem to be an issue for any other wealthy club, only Arsenal.
    Or that’s how it appears…

  124. tsgh says:

Before Fx left for AV he was handsomely paid by the club but spent less than half of his time at Colney with the rest in the USA… his short stint at AV showed how clueless he is at club management…

He allowed Delphi to sign a small extension and sold him on the following week.. what a humpty?

Some may say AW is too controlling but IG and Fox cant even sell our better players for a decent fee.. AW has to step in an get better for the club and put in clause e.g Vela, RvP etc

I am not an AW apologist but looking at all the evidence, those in charge of transfers at the club are absolutely useless at it.

  125. allezkev says:

    Sorry Rico… ?

I do hope that I’m wrong, but Arsenal do have previous…

Maybe if we lose to Liverpool it will force Wengers hand…?
    But…..
If we beat Liverpool I think we can forget any major signings…

Sorry to rain on your parade Mr Double pie n mash ?

  126. tsgh says:

    Fox.*

Kev- I agree with what you say above… but why should it be AW’s job in the first place?

I know AW and the club have ‘beef’ with certain agents rightly or wrongly because of ethics but aside from that we handle transfers badly… there is no coherent strategic approach…

Also Jorge’s grief with AW started when Dein was around I,e Ronaldo deal etc so it has more to do with club approach to not sucking up to dodgy agents.. imho..

  127. tsgh says:

Odd how Klopp is also struggling to make signings he wants.. UCL or not..

The yank influence.. odd how AW said 10 years ago (when the yanks come to Europe to look at soccer ownership ) he would never won under one…

saying that we are still the most successful yankee owned club. 😛

  128. tsgh says:

Rico- Klopp’s new signing defender Mario Rui, suffered an ACL injury last Friday, which could make the Portuguese left back unavailable for the entire 2016-2017 season not all good news at Scouser land it appears… 🙂
