Where have you been hiding it Arsene? Key moment re Bellerin….

Morning all.

When Michael Oliver booked Hector Bellerin very early in the game, I thought, oh no, here we go again, the officials have it in for us. But to be honest, the tackle was a sign of a young man who was eager to win his war on the right hand side of defence but got his timing all wrong. Did that bother him, it sure didn’t, he was superb and played beyond his young years.

In the centre of defence was a very different Per Mertesacker – so much so, imo, last night was one of his better performances in an Arsenal shirt. He did absolutely nothing wrong as far as I could see, he was calm, disciplined and just got so much right. Koscielny alongside him the same, and my only criticism is between them, they gifted Rooney far too much space for the Utd equaliser…..

Nacho Monreal, his goal was fabulous, his defensive play equally as good. He knew when to attack and he sure knew when to defend and when he did, he got it very right.

Happy Nacho

Szczesny – well he’s very low in confidence, something which I never thought I’d say but even though he made a few saves, his distribution was very poor and nearly caused us all sorts of problems too often. IF we get to the final, I really hope Ospina comes in…

1-1 at half time – I’m not sure how Fellaini was still on the pitch at this time, his rotational fouling on our players was getting missed by Oliver and his officials, as was the free kick/penalty on Welbeck. Match changes moments going….

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – well he was up for last night wasn’t he. Direct and at them, and he didn’t forget his defensive duties either. Such a shame he picked up what looked like a hamstring injury early in the second half…

Something happened at half-time, it must have done because Michael Oliver changed. Gone was the man who allowed Utd to get away with a bit too much and suddenly we saw what I believed was one of the better refereeing performances this season. No longer were the Utd players getting away with fouling, nor were their cheating antics being bought and the yellow card was waved at a few of their players. Fellaini, Rojo, Young, Januzaj and Herrara all went into the book for either diving or a naughty tackle…

On the 60 minute mark, a cock-up by Valencia allowed Danny Welbeck in. He chased down a poor back pass, went round De Gea who was left stranded on the floor and then buried the ball into the back of the net with all the calmness in the world. He’d found the game difficult imo, but he finished like a top striker would do and boy did he celebrate… I liked that…

Danny Boy

Just a few minutes later, Hector Bellerin caught Young, the latter made the most of it no doubt believing Olivier would brand a second yellow card. He didn’t and Arsene Wenger reacted quickly. Off went the young Spaniard and on came Chambers. The latter did well too.

Oh Danny Boy

Back to the players – Ozil and Cazorla had started slowly but as the game went on, they both grew in stature, Mesut on two occasions  lost the ball easily, too easily but instead of his head going down, off he went, chased the ball and got it back. Just what we want to see from our German. He could have scored, as could Santi and Alexis but De Gea was being just De Gea. Superb in goal.

Angel Di Maria also got booked and then stupidly, he shoved Olivier in the back. Big mistake as into the pocket went the yellow card and out came the red one. Off he went.

Utd were lucky, they could have been down to ten long before that sending off and as much as they threw a lot at us during the final stages of the game, or the dive by Januzaj in attempt to get a penalty, nothing would stop us from having our moment of glory, not even Michael Oliver who read through their antics like a book….

The final whistle blew……

All over

Today’s not a day to single out players whether for being good, great or off the pace because as a team, they worked their nuts off from start to finish.

But for me, a special word goes to Francis Coquelin who not only had to suffer a smack in the face from Fellaini, right on his fractured nose but during the latter stages of the game he was clearly struggling, even hobbling around at times, yet not once did he give up. He soldiered on and worked hard like a true warrior.

A mention for Arsene Wenger too. He stood by Danny Welbeck who was giving a lot when defending but was struggling to make an impact up front on his own. That decision was rewarded with the winning goal and unlike earlier in the year when he left Chambers at right back when he was struggling big time, he reacted quickly to protect Hector Bellerin from being sent off.

I don’t know where he’s been hiding his mojo but in my opinion, it’s starting to rear it’s head again and that can only be great for our club.

Finally, the 9000 travelling fans. What a top class performance from them. Their voices could be heard all the way through and they really were a 12th man, they were superb and right at the end hearing them sing ‘He left you ’cause you’re s**t’ was just awesome……. Loved it…..

Top performance all round I’d say and certainly a great win and finally, we know how to win at the Old Toilet and long may that remain…

Have a great day all….

Good Morning to The Lady of the House and all fellow Gooners.

    YES! YES! YES!
Not a typical free flowing Arsenal game, but pragmatic play and a great team effort to win the game. Well done lads.

  2. Adam says:

Rico. Nice write up but I believe it was Januzaj who went down looking for a cheap penalty later in the game. Herrera had been substituted by the genius LVG at half time. Not that it matters much as their whole team are a bunch of cheating scumbags living in the fading shadow of Ferguson’s feign of terror.

  3. potter says:

Just got up , this retirement has advantages. Monreal is a better player than the credit he gets , you need his type in a squad. Theo is being bought down to earth , no doubt his agent has been talking silly money. Like Rico , I am not sure about the quality of the goalkeeping coaching we seem to have a glass ceiling that since Seaman we have not gone through. Lehmann was good but only because of his German-ness and his single minded approach meant he was able to coach himself whilst watching Khan .I have great hopes for Martinez but then I did for Flappy and Szczesney , Manninger and a few others . All seem able to play a great game but have a concentration problem the next , it has to be in their preparation. We got our just desserts last night so it’s time to capitalise on it , onwards and upwards from now then.

Posted this on yesterday’s thread as you posted this one

  4. rogerbij says:

Thanks for the writeup Rico, reliving the moment through your writing. Ive been singing all morning 🙂 🙂
Im so happy because we won, but also because we showed we deserved to!

  5. Canadian Gooner says:

It must have been a real shock to ManUre’s collective system to have a real referee at Old Toilet. LVG or the front office staff must have neglected to mail the monthly cheque to the referee scheduler. For once Arsenal got the rub of the green and not ManUre.

Now if our team can only carry that attitude and effort over to our away match against Monaco.

  6. scottfromoz says:

The Mancs played a very cynical game…..it was hardly football.
I can not stand them, and rate them above the spuds on my most hated list.
Everything that club stands for is what’s bad in the game.
We deserved that win, and every player, as well as everyone on the coaching staff got it right.
    Morning all.

  7. Canadian Gooner says:

Potter – I’m not so sure the problem lies with the goalkeeping coaches, but rather a lack of true competition until recently. The same can be said for almost every other position. The team has enough depth that now most of the players have to put in a real effort if they want to play regularly. That’s as it should be.

Szczesney, unlike in the past, can no longer consider himself an automatic choice; he has to earn that privilege. Not before time.

  8. Canadian Gooner says:

Scott – Good evening! It would be more than fitting if both ManUre and Tottenscum miss out on a European place. ManUre still think they should be eligible by divine right.

I’d much rather see Sotton or, God forbid, even Liverfool.

  9. rogerbij says:

I actually hope Man U get Europa league qualification for next year… thatll knock the stuffing out of them next premier league season, since running around Europe and playing midweek games is pretty tough. That, and the indignity of playing in the Europe B league.
In general I couldnt really care less about Man U as long as we finish ahead of them in everything we do.

  10. Canadian Gooner says:

Scott – That would be great, but highly improbable.

It’s a bit like elections. You choose the lesser of the available evils.

Roger – You make a good point about ManUre and the trials and tribulations of the Europa League. However, if ManUre miss out on Europe, it is likely they will have a new manager next season. One who is unlikely to be given the money to make the team in his own image.

Missing out on Europe would be a big financial blow to their odious club.

  11. rico says:

    Agree Roger…

Cg, I read that yesterday and to be honest, I agree with the article. Afobe was shipped out a season to early imho. Especially when we consider Sanogo is still on our books…

  12. rico says:

Going back to Michael Oliver. What pleases me is he’s getting no criticism at all from anyone as far as I have seen, not even the journo’s for sending off Di Maria.

I hope all the other PL referees have taken note and follow his example because week in week out we see players with their hands on the ref, especially Terry and co…

Let’s hope the booking for such offence catches on…

  13. Adam says:

I seem to recall Raheem Sterling pushing a ref square in the chest last season in a match against us and getting no punishment at all.

  14. andrewh1313 says:

Great post rico, cant read enough about it! Highlight of the season, even more so than City because I don’t hate them in same way. GIve LVG a bit of credit though, he didn’t blame ref and is it little more honest than that red-cheeked chap they used to have.

  15. potter says:

Gerry Peyton GK coach , ex Fulham keeper . Must be close to 60 now, played in an age of back passing , keepers picking it up , three bounces before kicking long. The current back pass rule means a lot more 50 -50 long kicks , with our possession style our back line have to be more aware and become available for actual passes out. One thing that hasn’t changed is shot stopping which we seem good at , it’s the decision making on coming for the ball that seems to be our major fault.

  16. rico says:

The refs need to grow a par and start being a bit more firm Adam.

The good thing though is Oliver has now upped the bar and set a precedence and others will be highlighted in the papers and on Sky Sports etc…

  17. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – A number of articles in the daily newspapers suggested that referee Michael Oliver should have gotten Man-of-the-Match. I have to agree.

  18. kel says:

Great post Rico… what a game eh.. i went to my local which is full of plastic utd fans I sat among them giving the banter back n forth, For yrs it’s been one way traffic but last night the boys done us proud which allowed me to stick it to them 😀 and I loved it.
For once a referee that didn’t bow to utds cheating ways, or constant badgering from Rooney.

The whole team played well they fought and ran and got stuck in. The Ox and bellerin was scaring the life outta them on the right side.

Le coq was taking no shit from fouleni

Cazorla and Ozil were head and shoulders above anything utd had in midfield. Ozil’s use of space was superb imo.

Alexis was causing valencia problems all night and Danny never gave up.

If not for de gea could have been 4 or 5 what a keeper he is. Unlike are nervous wreck, hopefully that win gives scez a bit of a confidence boost.

  19. tsgh says:

    Super post Rico.

Last night’s atmosphere was very tense initially but the away fans are always up for it…
I will take Blind from Utd though. I thought he was superb for Yanited. AW should have bought him.

Excellent point Potter re Goalie coach…

  20. allezkev says:

Just been catching up on some earlier comments….

Coach, that was a great night in Arsrnals recent history.
Results like that can mould the season and set a team up for further success…

A bit like the 1-0 win at OT in 1998 when Overmars scored…

  21. allezkev says:

Coach, a very good friend of mine has suggested that Walcott could be leaving in the summer in a player exchange..,
He didn’t name the other player, but said that it would be a surprise… 🙂

Then Adam made his comments, and I thought that that is spooky…

Theo does have the look of a player, who is finding himself, suddenly, surplus to requirements…

He seems a bit non-plus’d by the speed of developments…

How things are changing at Arsenal….

  22. Canadian Gooner says:

    Kev – As you’re familiar with Hackney Marshes, I thought this might give you a chuckle;

Manchester United are playing Hackney Marshes football… but does Louis van Gaal’s constant changing tell us more about the limitations of the manager or players?

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2987853/Manchester-United-s-problems-Louis-van-Gaal-deeper-just-selling-Danny-Welbeck-negative-subs-Juan-Mata-Radamel-Falcao-wasted.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

  23. tsgh says:

Cg- … For the English media to even question the quality of LVG is laughable imho and shows their lack of knowledge on the beautiful game.

This man has coached 3 very elite teams before arriving at Yanited… He developed players at Ajax and Barca and even brought through none other than Kroos at BM..
The issue is Utd is going through a transition; they have a NICE team now… similar to our teams of 2008 to 2012 there is no Phil or Gary to do a Reyes on us…

  24. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Afternoon Lovelies and Hunkies.

    Wonderful match report Lady.

I enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed watching the match. Without the high rush of adrenalin and without being tense. lol

Seems as if everyone is in shock. That was an un-Arsenal result. everyone expected that they would win. But our lads proved that this time they were not going to be intimidated.

On a side note…..did you hear about the Arsenal museum offer??? Apparently they offered to take Diaby’s bed. But the physios and the medical team do not want to…..they would rather keep it as a memento.

  25. Canadian Gooner says:

Ginge – I thought it was interesting from the point of view of the noticeable change in attitude of the national press. In previous years ManUre could do no or at least very little wrong. Now they are questioning the club, the team and the manager.

As good as LVG is or possibly was, he may not make it to next season at Old Toilet.

  26. Canadian Gooner says:

Kev – You, me and most, if not all, of the House residents have been chuckling since last night.

  27. tsgh says:

I wich I could chuckle; I have been trying to stay awake in Office- Cg

M6 traffic plus delay getting out of Manchester and so did not arrive home until nearly 3…

  28. Canadian Gooner says:

Ginge – Your suffering was all in a very good cause. The faces of LVG, his players and the ManUre fans said it all for me. With 15 to 20 minutes to go you could see the faith and hope slowly draining away from them.

The only real downside to Arsenal winning is that Piers Morgan didn’t electrocute himself.

As for Carlo and CR07, if ManUre don’t make Europe this year, they wont be able to afford them. Also, they have other positions that require more desperate and immediate attention.

  29. Canadian Gooner says:

Well it is almost dawn here. So, I am off to bed and chortling all the way.

Have a great day everyone. Keep The Faith!

  30. andrewh1313 says:

Sorry rico, just been informed that your report and all our glowing enthusiasm is misplaced. The Sun only considers three Arsenal player performed better than a 6/10.

  31. frednerk says:

    Afternoon All,
We all agree about our great win.
Decision making last night was something that impressed me,
Welbeck chasing down the mancs defence with Sanchez,
    paid off.
Taking Bellerin off another good decision.
On the negitive side Kosser ball watching again,
    for rooneys goal.
The two who stood out for me last night,
were the Coq,who took on that big lump
in the middle of the park,
    and that little Ref Oliver
    Coq could/should crack on now.
And for once in my life,
this Ref,could go on to be one of the best.

  32. allezkev says:

Referees now, it seems, are being instructed to keep 22 players on the pitch…

It’s a difficult balancing act and some people are gonna be upset that so and so wasn’t sent off…

Oliver could have easily sent off Bellerin, despite the fact that Fellaini should have gone earlier or that Rojas or Herrira could have gone…

But we’ve seen many cowardly refereeing performances at this ground in the past, where our players have suffered violence but we end up a man down…

So I think that Oliver referee’d honestly and wasn’t afraid to take unpopular decisions…
    To both sides…

It’s a shame we haven’t got few more refs of his quality…

  33. Hell Raising Devil says:

    bigging up a ref??????

Like KEv…….I’ve heard it all now.

    tsk tsk tsk

The monkey supporters are showing their true colours its seems……police are investigating tweets against DW23……racist and death threats.

  34. Wavy says:

If the Sn’s awarding 6/10 for our lot, what on earth are they giving the manurers? 6/10 or more perhaps? Or have they been as honest as Oliver and given them what they deserved 2/10 or maybe even 3/10 as that’s all that they worth!

  35. Hell Raising Devil says:

I never give an arse about the ratings they give the team. Its all a matter of opinion to me. One may see a performance as worthy of 7. Another may see the same performance worthy of 8 while another might give 6.

Its like marking an essay during the correction of exam papers.

  36. frednerk says:

    Payback time Mancs,
After that Judas scoring everytime we played them,
How loverly to watch our Danny, score the winner.

  37. Lee says:

Coq/Monreal photo finish for best player last night…. how the fook did that pile of shite beat us at the Emirates?

  38. andrewh1313 says:

Sun gave Cazorla top mark with 8. Welbeck next with 7 alongside Rooney, Fellaini, Blind and Kos.

Bellerin got 5, Di Maria got 2!!!!

But Ox, Ozil and Coq 6. They were watching another game, or not even watching?

  39. Lee says:

Ozil ” Utd offered us mistakes & we exploited them well. We concentrated on our work off the ball & followed the manager’s game plan!”

  40. rico says:

    2pm Andrew, so would I…

Fred, I loved it too re Danny, and the fans singing at the end…. Credit to a few Manc fans though, they clapped him off and clearly, they never wanted him to leave…

    Afternoon all…

  41. Hell Raising Devil says:

Arsenal have reportedly held discussions about signing Manchester United duo Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

The Gunners are on the lookout for more centre back options as they plan for next season.

Austrian star Aleksandar Dragovic is in their sights, but the Daily Mail says Arsenal are also looking at United pair Evans and Smalling.

According to reports, Arsenal have held talks about possibly signing the pair, in what would be the most unlikely double deal ever.

Evans and Smalling are both likely to be surplus to requirements this summer, with United targeting big money replacements.

    .
    .
    .
.SURELY THEY ARE OVERAGE FOR THE UNDER 21 SQUAD????

  42. Wavy says:

Sorry to disagree Rico, but he reminded me of Sylvestre last night! And I’m not joking. If that’s the best we can do we won’t be looking at big ears in 4 years time! A spitter and a shi**er…..I don’t think so!
Manures back four are worse than ours were last year! Heaven save us from the shore heaps cast offs!

  43. Micko says:

Don’t worry agag, normal service will be resumed Wednesday week !

You gotta love Monday nite football.

  44. Rick says:

    Evening Rico and the House
Excellent post Rico I bet you enjoyed writing it as much as everyone has enjoyed reading it.
What a great night to be a gooner and a member of H/H as Tom Hanks would say “Its Magic”
I don’t think I could make any player MOM but I was delighted for LeCoq and Bellerin both are getting better with every game.
I’m hoping the U21’s will follow up with a must needed win tonight, they really need it.

  45. rico says:

    I’m good thanks Agag, you?

Evening Rick, thanks and I did. It’s been a long time since a victorious report about a Utd game has been written by me. Long before HH started that’s for sure….

  46. rico says:

Can’t see it myself either really Micko, must be tempting for AW to send the reserves over and concentrate on the CL place and Fa cup…

  47. Micko says:

    Indeed agag, very intermittent !

tsgh, all the pikeys I’ve spoken to over-here would love to see the back of Blind, they’re not too impressed with him, everything goes sideways, he looked great at the World Cup it must be said.

  48. Rick says:

    Tonights U21 Team.
Ilieve,Kamara,Dobson,O’connor, Boo,Bielik,Maitland Niles, Zelalem,Crowley Iwobi Akpom. Subs Macey Bola Willock Jebb Mavididi

Chuba ‘s first start since Jan 5th, Boo’s first since October .
    Disappointed no Serge.
Come on boys make it two wins in 24 hours

  49. joe says:

evening all, the ref does the job hhe’s paid for he still showed a bias to man utd when it came to fouls and the media goes mad.
Here’s a point if refs did their job fairly and had not been a bunch of cheats we might have won a few more games at old toilet over the years

  50. scottfromoz says:

Guys, why is it when some of us have raised poor refereeing as a FACTOR why Arsenals record over the last few seasons could have and should have been better, we get howled down for it, yet here we all are saying how refreshing it was to have a decent and honest performance from an official!!!
So do they make a difference or don’t they?
If no, then let’s forget about Oliver.
If they do, then don’t crucify people for complaining when we have a 1-1 draw and don’t receive two stonewall penalties…….and, be more lenient on the players and manager when that occurs.
Now, I’ve seen two referees of Arsenal in the last few years who I felt were totally honest…Oliver and Clattenburg.
They will make mistakes, but for the right reasons.
How ridiculous we are celebrating an honest official though!!
The FA ought to hang their heads in shame.
    I’m still happy 🙂

  51. rico says:

If by chance we beat Monaco, drawing Real Madrid wouldn’t be all that bad. They were shocking last night and lucky to go through…

  52. Lee says:

Is it the referees fault that Wenger has never beaten Jose? I can’t see any official favouring that hi hi fucktard…..
    Morning Rico…

  53. rico says:

Recently it may have been Lee, especially when one looks at some of the red card challenges that have been made by them. The Cahill one still riles me….

  54. rico says:

Saying that. I don’t think its right to blame a ref for us losing a game, but I sure as heck blame them when they miss key bookings/fouls and red cards….

  55. HenryB says:

Having a read thru the comments from yesterday, I tend to agree with Scottfromoz regarding referees.

They do have an adverse impact on games and can materially affect the results.

The thing is tho that it is not just Arsenal who have been victimised – some of the decisions elsewhere have been appalling too.

It is a disgrace that the standard of refereeing and their incompetence is not being addressed by the FA/Premier League.

  56. Lee says:

But it’s not always us that’s on the wrong end of the decisions…. I find it a cop out. Still each to their own I guess…

  57. Adam says:

Morning Rico and Brudder. I find it easier to blame the refs for everything that is detrimental to Arsenal. Like the end of a digestive cycle.

  58. rico says:

Agree Henry/Lee – even Jose has had some awful decisions go against him as did Qpr last weekend against the Toots…

This is an 11 v 11 sport and we shouldn’t be relying on someone to be sent off in order to win… Of course it’s darn annoying when continual fouling on our players goes unpunished, especially when our players go in the book for something much less.

  59. Adam says:

Everyone knows that the future integrity of the game depends on the introduction of technology and the sweeping away of the stupid rule that determines that no retrospective action can be taken if a referee has either seen the incident or taken some kind of action at the time.
Let’s just get on with it but make sure that Mike Riley is nowhere near anything that might be construed as decisive.

  60. tsgh says:

    Morning Rico and all…

Would love it if Psg dump Rumpelstiltskin and the chavs out of the UCL tonight…

The it seems like the pressure cooker is about to pop at the Wastelands… training ground brawls again. lol

  61. rico says:

Adam, surely technology is not that far away, especially as more and more refereeing howlers are made…

    Ts, so would I….

  62. Adam says:

Rico. Technology is coming but I imagine there are vested interests that include financial considerations that are delaying it. As soon as Blatter is no more things might happen. But you are right in that there are some really appalling decisions happening weekly that make Its introduction very soon an imperative.
One thing is for sure and that is that the malign influence of Ferguson is noticeably absent and that has made the game better. Witness Monday night’s game. A researched article looking back on his relationship to refereeing decisions would be fascinating, if one could dig deep enough.

  63. allezkev says:

    Morning All…

For someone, who has been criticised in the Press/Media for belittling the FACup in the past, and not taking it seriously.
It’s rather ironic to find that Arsene Wenger holds the all-time record of any manager in the history of the competition of 11 semi-finals…

  64. Lee says:

I’m just not 100% sure what “herbs” Adam uses in his green tea, but I’ve never seen Kev eat food like it after a cup of it…..
