What’s all this about Henry..?

Well the international break is now finished and now we can get back to some proper football. Well hopefully.

I know news is at a minimum during these international breaks but why all the news gossip and articles from Arsenal and Wenger on Thierry Henry..?

We all know he has been doing his coaching badges with the club and helping our at the Academy but why has Wenger stated Henry need to be more selfish and change his ways if he is to be a manager.? Is it good advice or a warning to TH that his media job isn’t about moaning at the club for not spending and pointing out players we should or should not of bought.

On one hand TH said we should of bought and added to the squad but then later said he understood why we hadn’t.

Has TH made is clear that he wants to take over from Wenger..? Is this Wenger telling him what he needs to do to be a success or is it just a friend giving advice to another friend on his job prospects?

Is seems a little strange even when footie news is so quiet that the club runs articles on TH and his aspirations at a time when Arsene comes out with comments about him? Is it the Club PR wagon jumping on board to give the fans the idea that TH could well be in line for a call to step up a level..?

I think at the moment there are a few good young managers in the game, does our board have the foresight to be planning for Arsene’s retirement or are they just thinking “oh shit what do we do when he calls it a day”…? I think the latter if I am honest, seems we don’t really do anything in a pro-active manner do we..? The board will be thinking a new manager would want money, the owner won’t want to spend ( or will he..? )  If we stuff it up then we are the ones who failed to replace the great Arsene Wenger………. I think Arsene has a job for many years to come but thats for another day.

Have a good one.

    Boom. Bang. Kerrrunnnccchhhhh. Fizzzzzzzzzzzz. Phiuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

    Good Afternoon Lovelies and hunkies.

International footy is over. At least for the time being.

    No injuries it seems.

So we are near a full squad now.

    How are you Wath???

  2. tsgh says:

Wath- did you share a bottle or 2 of the dark stuff with Malaga gooner before you wrote the post? Good one. 🙂

Hi Dev- Thank heavens that bore-fest is over… watch England last night was a bit painful

  3. Martin Wengrow says:

In my view Thierry will never be a football manager, let alone the manager of Arsenal. You can sense that he’s just not tailored for it. I always felt the same about Tony Adams and unfortunately that proved correct. Perhaps he can be useful to the club in some kind of coaching capacity, perhaps with young players, like he is doing currently.

  4. Wath says:

I’ll have to keep these comments for a few years and see who is right and wrong…!

I’m good Dev, hope you’re well mate.

Ts, I never ever share my GG… only with Lee…! Alas i drank alone last night, so no conspiracy stuff necessary thank you 🙂

  5. Wavy says:

TH, a wonderful footballer, a cult legend, a true hero………..on the pitch!

A bit of a dork off it! Studio or training ground he’s not up to snuff! Sad, but there it is.

    Afternoon all.

  6. Wath says:

    What constitutes a good/great manager….?

Until someone does the job can we actually say if they will be a success or not..? We can have an opinion obviously but until they step up and actually do the job no one will know for sure.

  7. Wavy says:

To an extent I agree with you Wath but, most people can recognise a person who is quite clearly not suited the job, in this case, of chief coach! I can offer a few Arsenal managers from the past who, on the surface, had all the right credentials but when it came to the day to day running of the club, coaching ‘the right way’ managing the all too sensitive modern day footballers, co-ordininating with the Board, in fact running an efficient, well oiled, cohesive business they were found wanting!
Shall we start with Billy Wright, legend for England and Wolves, a crap manager!
Bertie Mee ‘unknown’ footballer brilliant man manager and tactician, along with Don Howe, of course.
Terrt Neill, an ordinary CH, (we used to call him ‘club foot’ very cruel and extremely un PC these days). An ordinary manager who had a bit of Irish blarney but very little substance. A relative failure at Arsenal and later down the slum!
George Graham, for all the success he had in his tenure the last two years were dire! The signing of John Jensen who unwittingly was the cause of GG’s downfall was one of several pathetic signings he made during his death knell period, Glenn Helder, Kiwomya etc.
Bruce Rioch, a one year failure, apart from having something to do with signing DB10.
And now we come to the vacancy that will have to be filled sooner rather than later. Many candidates will be lining themselves up to takeover what must be perceived as one of the top jobs in football. Henry is one and I think at one point a year or so ago, Wenger would have endorsed him 100% now I’m not so sure. Adams, thinks he is or should be a ‘shoe in’, but I don’t think he even talks the talk leave alone ‘walks the walk’! So he’s a no no too!
I’m not going to labour the point but there are very very few people in football who could ever replace our old Frenchman. It will be interesting to see who is appointed but I think, no matter who the person is they won’t last long a la Moyes and Sexton at manure!
    It’ll be interesting, won’t it?
But you are right we won’t know until the new appointment is in situ, will we?

  8. Wath says:

It will indeed be interesting Wavy, maybe the persona that we see and relate to would be completely different if they became AFC manager..?

A great player makes not a great manager… A great manager wasn’t in some cases even a decent player let alone good or great at all so there is no hard and fast rule.

I think in this day and age a man manager is important and the back room staff vital. If you have a good coash by your side and the team around you is good then maybe we’d be surprised by who could and may be a success after Wenger leaves, the point is what would the board class as risky or not and would they have the balls to go with someone who isn’t a household name..?

  9. Simon Ngulube says:

We can’t rule out someone simply because he doesn’t support the philosophy of the current manager who we deem as successful….everyone has his time..Pep, a great footballer and yet a great manager too. In my opinion TH can make it.. In todays football it’s all about buying players….They are doing it at City and they have done it at Chelsea…

And we have failed at Emirates…….I write what I see…

  10. allezkev says:

Being a Manager is different from being a Coach, in the English sense…

Tony Adams did a good job, albeit over a short period, as the Coach at Portsmouth.
Wasn’t he the Coach when they won the FACup?
As a Manager he was a lot less successful, and once you have failed in that job, it’s fairly difficult to get another chance.

  11. allezkev says:

Martin Keown was quite impressive during his spell Coaching at Arsenal…
Why he wasn’t offered or didn’t want a permanent position at Arsenal, I have no idea?

He seems to have the right temperament and is a deep thinker on the game…

Maybe he was too opinionated for Wengers taste?

  12. allezkev says:

Thierry Henry is doing it the right way, starting at the bottom, unlike, say, Roy Keane…

If he was an idiot, then Jonker wouldn’t have him around, so he must have something…

Being Arsenal manager is, of course, another level.
But there’s no harm in being ambitious…

As it goes, my vote for the man to succeed Arsene Wenger goes Bob Magabe…

  13. Wavy says:

You’re a daft sod Kev. Bobbie Mugabe, ever young at ninety one! But scarily still in charge and doesn’t look like handing in his meal ticket for a while yet!
Begs a question, will Le Chef still be on the training pitch down the Colney at a similar age? Still in charge. He could be you know! The Committee to re-elect may never have to sit before 2040!

  14. Lewis says:

    Good eve all.

    Nice post.

Does no one else think it’ll be bouldy?

Wouldn’t mind seeing De Boer, Bergy and overmars tbh.

  15. Simon Ngulube says:

On another note; I can’t remember winning any game in the last two years… Soon after the internationals… The best we have managed is the draw… Am a bit uncomfortable with Stoke game….lol…

  16. Marinello says:

Lewis: not really sure what Steve Bould does apart from lay out the cones and warm the players up…
Wenger will be a massive act to follow, especially if the Board move him upstairs and his presence will still be felt around the Club.

  17. Micko says:

No French surrender monkeys need apply.

Marinello, that would never work, the new guy in would only be his tea wallah, when he decides to call it a day all ties need to be cut.

Don’t forget to put the chickens out Wath will ya !

  18. Micko says:

Haha Wath, I promised rico I’d keep an eye on ya !

Truth is, only Mg really knows.

This week’s back has been broken, it’s all downhill from here on in, catch you tomorrow.

  19. scottfromoz says:

I’ve seen a lot of ex players who were absolute superstars fail dismally when given a coaching/managing role.
IMO, it’s because the game was so easy for them, and came so naturally….how do you teach that to someone?
    You can’t.
Intelligent footballers, players who were always thinking on the pitch, and not just playing on instinct are those who succeed off the pitch.
Most top managers were fair or average players, but guys who made the absolute most of their talent.
There’s always an exception, but history tells me Henry won’t succeed.
Dennis would because he had it all…..obviously, he had ridiculous talent, but he was also a damn intelligent player.
The fact he came through the Ajax system also stands him in good stead, as he knows what’s required.

  20. Wavy says:

They say 90 is the new 65!
Just watch Wenger’s reign last for another 40 years! He’s determined to out queen the Queen!

  21. Wath says:

Scott, If you have not listened to the interview with Andries Jonker on Arsenal dor com it’s very very interesting…!

    I’m off, night all..! Morning Scott…! 🙂

  22. Wath says:

That any good for the old tikker Lee….?

I’d possibly at Rosicky to Arteta Potter, both seem to have the right intelligence and the respect of the layers around them..!

  23. Adam says:

The way that the financial pyramid within the PL is going I would think that the best man for the job is probably still Arsene. If Kroenke won’t release the funds to compete for the top players or make a massive cash injection, then where does that leave us ? – except for being a club that develops players and picks up the occasional gem who is then sold to one of the big 3 or to a sugar daddy club abroad, so we can fund moves to more promising young players who can then be.. Oh well, you get the picture.
