Wengers beautiful game, could it be our downfall?

The beautiful game has been Arsene Wengers dream way of playing for many years, slick quick passing, team mates moving like a well oiled gearbox, synchronised meshing, often making lesser teams seem as if they are running around like headless chickens.  Media, Pundits, Managers and players all agree that when Arsenal play like this its beautiful to watch. Playing this way takes tremendous amounts of training and practice but if you have a sticky gear it can upset the smooth running.

This way of playing has its for’s and against, I will start with the for’s:

When we are in possession, the quick passes that we play seldom gives the opposing team a chance, they run from player to player and just as they are about to tackle the ball is gone. Large amounts of possession is accumulated, making the game look one-sided, our players gain confidence and try trick passes which often work and can split any defence but if they don’t, we hand the ball to the opposition.

The against:

We play the beautiful game but we play it slow.  Most of the time we bring the ball out from our keeper, sometimes we have five or six passes before we cross the halfway line, the same on the other half.  But what we have achieved with all these passes is to allow the opposition time to form their defensive lines, we spread the passing from one side of the ground to the other but there are so many played back, we appear to be knocking on the door but are not allowed in.

This was apparent in our game with City, a team who visited with no demands but with the belief that they could earn a result and with their dogged defending did it very well, albeit only a point but an away point against one of their rivals in the top four of the league. They set their stall up not to lose and that’s exactly what happened.

They had a tactical plan and apart from one, maybe two shots on target from us it was a resilient defending night from City, I know some would say we hit the post three times and stranded their impressive goalkeeper Joe Hart but I count that as a shot not on target but a miss, Hart at no stage looked under pressure.

How can we work this out so that we retain possession and score goals and turn these frustrating draws into happy wins. Wenger appears to struggle with this scenario, we appear to play the same whoever we play and the rest of the league know it too. Most of the other teams are using the same ploy against us and all who use it often get results. We ought to learn a lesson from games like these and watch how other teams perform given the same circumstances.

Look no further than Manchester United, I understand a lot of readers will find this distasteful but if it helps us to pull our head out of the sand it has to be done.

Now Manchester Utd  play a similar game to us but faster, they are more direct and push forward extremely quickly defences hate this pressure.  Forwards race into the box awaiting a quick cross which often produces the wanted goal, they catch the defenders before they have formed their back line everybody is running at sixes and sevens.

Tottenham have also adopted this ploy this season to good effect, with Gareth Bale a spurting run direct with forwards running for all their worth to get in the box has attributed to their goal tally as was shown against us, Chelsea, although not at their best this season, are also past masters of this ploy and with eager forwards have reaped the rewards in passed seasons.

Perhaps its time to swallow our pride and attempt a new approach as of our rivals as we have become a team who are becoming predictable and easy to play against. We need to mix our play up so that opposing teams do not know what is coming.

If we carry on as we are the beautiful game we play could also end up being our downfall.

Time to look and learn from others?

It’s no weakness, it’s the way forward……

Titbits – our reserves got a hammering last night, 10-1 they lost against Aston Villa, both regular centre halves, Ignasi Miquel and Sead Hajrovic were missing from the line up which suggests one or even both could be in the squad travelling to Ipswich, Miquel has to be on the bus.

Arsenal old boy John Jensen is set for the Assistant Manager’s job at Blackburn and David Wheater is on the verge of joining Bolton. Coyle insists there is a place for both he and Cahill but now is the time for us to make our move, we need a Centre Half and Cahill or Samba seem the obvious choice, we’ve got the money, Wenger just needs to get on and spend it….

Have a good day all, tomorrow it’s the Carling Cup semi-final, it’s been a long time coming….

    Morning all

Another good read Steve with good points made, we certainly spend too much time passing sideways…

I struggled with spell check on your post, everytime it hovered over the words Manu utd and Tottenham it asked me to change the word to ‘crap’….

    Don’t know why 😉

Great post! I couldn’t have said it better myself! The problem is: The players know this, the fans know this, even the commentators know this, and i know that Wenger does too! We won’t be winning titles with the leaky defence we have. Song is a great ball winner, but should be told to stay back and protect the back 4. Look at Barca and Busquets. They bomb forward, but still have a rock solid defence, because mascherano or busquets stay behind to protect, therefore they are not vulnerable to counter attacks as we are! I hate it when Wenger says: Now we can also win ugly, just because we have one game like that. It’s no use to play so attacking football against strong opposition.. but will he ever learn? sigh..

    Morning rico,
i understand what you mean, i hate having to include them, but if it helps us get that long awaited trophy i’ll suffer it.

    Wenger winning a trophy? lol

I agree with u there Steve, with regards to the way we start slow when “playing the beautiful game…”. Compared to the way Barca play theres its like x4 the way we play. On watching their game against Real, the passing was good to watch, and they were always on the move hence creating passing options. Its going to be a very interesting game when we play them in the CL, I ave to say but I hope we really give our best and surprise them.

    ha ha classic 🙂

  6. Will says:

    Morning.

I have to disagree re: The Man City game. They came not to attack. It would have been extremely hard to have played quick, counter attack football against a team that never left their own half. They had exactly zero attacking intent.

As for Tottenham, they play football from our 1997 era. Think Bergkamp, Overmars and Anelka attacking with three passes at pace.

I have to say, I am getting feed up with this slow tippy tap football. I want us to be more direct, using the clever passers we have to set players like Theo, AA and Nasri away.

I have heard JET is fast as hell. Get rid of Nik B, bring in JET and return to those halcyon days of defending the halfway line and having one pass to set through two or more players.

  7. rico says:

    Me too Steve 😉

T-buzz, incredible really he got that award but I suspect it’s down to the way he runs the club and doesn’t get us into debt – all very well to a dgree but we want a trophy and this CC has to be the stepping stone. Big selection headache for Wenger today/tomorrow me thinks….

  8. rico says:

Morning Will – i can see what you are saying about City but after 10/15 minutes Wenger should have seen that and changed our system to negate theirs, how though i don’t know, but thats why i’m not a footie manager 😉

JET played last night so I guess that means Nikki plays tomorrow 🙁

    Hope i’m wrong though….

  9. arsenalDK says:

    I feel you Steve

we’ve seen it so many times, and on saturday, we saw it against weaker opposition, Leeds. And they didn’t even park the bus, they came to play football! It’s so frustrating, we have the players for it, but we have no variation in our slick passing game, and therefore our game is easy to read 🙁

  10. K-TR7 says:

Morning all.fantastic post.i’ll add barca to that list.they knock the ball around similar to us but when the ball reaches to messi/iniesta in the final third they accelerate their play while villa/pedro/xavi make off the ball movements to form triangles enabling the aforementioned two perform one-twos to slice apart defenses.against city we were doing exactly that but we couldn’t maintain it.with proper training am sure we’ll be able to do it over 90 minutes.nasri/cesc/theo are vital if this is to be achieved.

  11. James says:

Beautiful game! What a myth. Arsenal don’t play beautiful football, or very rarely. Again, this is speaking without thinking. Did Arsenal play beautiful football against Leeds? Ridiculous. Arsenal played beautiful football under the Invincibles, that was 7 years ago. Since then, there have been flashes, but all I see now is boring tripe, and the occasional piece of passing brilliance from Nasri or Fabregas. We should get over ourselves. Arsenal win nothing and don’t play exciting beautiful football either. It’s actually quite dull, passing sideways all the time and never being incisive.

  12. K-TR7 says:

I hate the manc reference but its true.it helps when howard webb MBE (Manchester’s Best Employee) is part of the team.

  13. Will says:

There is no tactic to overcome what Man City did other than long shots or knocking it high into the box hoping for a scrap.

  14. T-buzz says:

Nikki needs to go and he can take his pink boots and Almunia with him as well.
Is Sanchez-Watt a loanie at Leeds or moved there for good? I have to say, he was good against us at the weekend IMO

  15. gunnerwilliam says:

The barren years is solid proof. If the special one and top winning trophy bosses can do it,they would have done so years ago.
If this season ends barren other than the micky mouse cup,the finger must be pointed at Wenger. The problem is WEnger is convinced his wengerball will succeed.
We will have to withold judgement until may.

  16. Steve Palmer says:

ADK,i know many would say that i dig Wenger a bit to much, i love the man and what he’s done for us, what gets me is, i can see we had problems in goal problems at the back and he leaves it, i dont understand that, saying that our problems are easing with the keepers so maybe his right

  17. P-McG says:

This thesis would have merit if we struggled to break down Leeds, we didn’t, we exposed them a lot, two one on ones missed from two direct balls burning them. City came for a point, as said when there’s no space you go long or you recycle possession and work, there are no real other options, again chances were there, they weren’t taken.

Recycling possession has to be done at home, away from home the team is extremely direct, and usually can be be poor possession wise, losing the ball a lot, but getting results due to the space being there to exploit.

  18. Steve Palmer says:

I see our league is attracting a lot of older players with TH and Becks, dont they have training anywhere else

  19. rico says:

morning to those who have just joined us here on HH…

James, there was a time when we played beautiful football, to be fair at times we still do, what urks is when we face the ‘park the bus’ side, it all goes wrong as we don’t seem to have a plan b…

In theory, with the two tall strikers we should be able to play hoof ball up to them every now and again just to break the deadlock and make those teams have to play, thats when we can hit them hard..

Sadly, especially Nikki, doesn’t have the ability to be that striker….

  20. rico says:

The American Soccer season has finished so they go to Europe Steve, where else would Henry want to go? Other than his footballing home.. 🙂

I think Becks really wanted to come to us again and not the spuddies….

  21. rico says:

P-Mc, against Leeds we were our own downfall, yes Leeds defended well in my book but Nik and AA wasted chance after chance….

  22. Steve Palmer says:

I can take in a lot of your comments, but dont you think that with eight or nine changes in every game, its makeing the gelling part of the game difficult

  23. rico says:

8/9 unforced changes are wrong….. up to five at most i say, otherwise the balance is all wrong, would be different if we truly had like for like, but we dont….

  24. Steve Palmer says:

Goog point that rico, i was only thinking about that the other day,how to use that to our advantage, American football although completly different to ours, have two teams within a team offence and defence, we could use that idea when playing certain teams. e.g big forwards them, and big keeper us if you get my meaning and so on

  25. rico says:

KT, re your earlier about sneijder, i can’t answer that as i don’t watch them enough to make comment but anyone other than messi would bebetter – as i said yesterday and you have said before, the fact that TH never won it makes me think it’s all a fix anyway….

  26. Steve Palmer says:

I was reading this morning that SW Philips was on the move, he could have been a good buy for us and let Theo go central both are speed freeks at least there would be someone in the middle when he crossed, with Bentner or RVP comeing up behind they would be there when the ball came out

  27. Steve Palmer says:

Also i see Paul Jewell has taken the managers job at Ipswitch but has declined to take over untill after our game , i hope that means he dosn’t fancy their chances

  28. Red Arse says:

    Morning all,

    Good write up again Steve.

A couple of other items you could add to your analysis would be; that when we played at our best this season, we were terrific at closing down the oppo’ when we lost the ball. The Chelsea game was an example.

The other factor is that when we play poorly or slowly, it is evident that we simply pass to the oppo’ players all too often. The Leeds game was typical of this.

Finally, if we had a proper goal scoring CF, we would have beaten Manc Citeh and Leeds easily. How many times are we going to hit the post or screw up one on ones with the oppo’ goalkeepers?

KT, I think Sneijder was a good call for the Ballon D’Or too. He was brilliant last season. But I cannot begrudge Messi, he is absolutely brilliant too! 🙂

  29. rico says:

SWP is over the hill Steve and another midget 😉

Morning RA, i bgrudge any of the stains an award…

Walkies time for me, back in a bit….

  30. arsenalDK says:

Does anyone know about the Vela to Bolton situation? Why Wenger hasn’t given the boy more chances, and still says that he has a future at the club, is beyond me..

  31. P-McG says:

Agreed that the changes are clearly the root of the recent problem, not the style. The only real problem with how we set up is that the defence cannot deal with being so isolated, coupled with the alarming regression of Clichy, but that has improved as Kos and Djorou have come on.

That said the team played well enough and should have had three points at Wigan and beaten Leeds, the personel were more than good enough. The performances were not actually as bad as being made out, bar Arshavin, and Nick has been out for Half a year and always takes time to settle, just look at how he dragged us through last season and was the only reason we were still in the title race before the defence went predictably to shit.

  32. Steve Palmer says:

ADK, wouldnt be supprised to see him tomorow night, not heared anything yet, if we keep loaning out, we will be playing ourselves soon

  33. Steve Palmer says:

PMG,Clicky has had the yips, like a dart player cant get rid of it, and our strikers have gone the other way, they shoot at the bull and hit the doubles

  34. JonJon says:

    hi guys..
thought provoking piece steve my good man..
i can understand everyones concerns. but i can feel that we are on the verge of something special this season

  35. P-McG says:

Not sure Steve, had always thought Clichy was just out of sorts and would work it out. He was always one of my favourites due to his attitude and genuine love for the club, but the fact is he has been poorer for longer than he has been excellent at this stage, hard as it is to accept.

  36. K-TR7 says:

RA I don’t begrudge messi at all.he had 62 goals in the 2010 calendar year.he has 28 goals in 26 games this season alone.in la liga he has 18 goals and 12 assists in 15 games.he has 155 goals in 240 games for barca.he is a beast of a player but i thought sneijder/diego milito/xavi had more successful years.however no one can dispute that no player is close to him in terms of individual talent and perfomance.

  37. JonJon says:

thing is steve is that you balanced it out..everyone knows we play shit hot footy and yet at the same time when it doesnt work we can look incredibily poor..

only thing i will say is that manutd have been shite this season theyve been long ballers i can count on one hand the amount of times theyve played fast free flowing footy this season, the rest of the time its just hit a hope to berba

  38. Steve Palmer says:

What i like about Utd is how fast they go into attack and how many they get in the box, although as you say they havnt been at their best the slick passing and fast forward play un nerves a lot of teams

  39. Steve Palmer says:

just to add, refs help does make a difference, but you have to have the bodies in the box, to get the penalties

  40. oliver says:

morning all, good post steve. i sometimes think our “beautiful football” is a myth – a condescending “well, they won’t win anything but they are…” from other supporters and media. there is no doubt that when it works, it is nice to look at and effective – but i don’t think we always work hard enough, or are direct enough. i see the extra pass we often make as a safety valve of sorts – something to revert to when things are not working or we have run out of ideas. the slow-it-down pass-pass-pass-pass is not pretty, and is often extremely frustrating.

all (or most) are points you already made…

  41. Steve Palmer says:

    JJ,
you know and i know that, that would never happen the FA or govening bodies will have some sort of get out, the amount of traveling fans, and television want them there Utd that is

  42. angelicbeardy says:

Didn’t Man City play defensive against Tottenham and Man United and got 0-0 draws against them both also.

  43. K-TR7 says:

JJ Manchesters Best Employee (H.Webb) has awarded 5 penalties in the last 10 games at Old Trafford since October 2008 when the mancs last lost a game with webb in charge against city.in the same period he bottled decisions to send off rafael for a last man foul against Blackburn in the closing moments of the game which would’ve been a penalty and a red card.the game ended 2-1 to the mancs which left Big sam fuming as he also expected the winker to be sent off for flicking out (barely kicking) David Dunn.he also bottled sending of rio in the clash against m.city in a clash between rio and tevez.he also failed to send off o’shea in last seasons game despite him being the last man…i hope these facts smoke your manc buddy.

  44. Will says:

Anyone else getting fed up with “not won anything for 5 years” every 5 minutes?

When was the last time Liverpool won anything? Tottenham? Everton?

  45. JonJon says:

i always thought that as well mate but chelsea and manu have already started the ball rolling

this ruling has scared them their must me substance to it

  46. arsenalDK says:

ha ha Steve, good one! let’s loan half of our team out to Bolton, it would be interesting to meet them afterwards 😀

  47. Father Bear says:

    Hey Steve

Your article is spot on. We are just too predictable far too often and Wenger is just too stubborn to admit our obvious deficiencies and do anything about it. It is “his way or no way”. In addition, has anyone else noticed our strikers are just not producing goals to the degree we need. Since we sold Adebayor we have not had a high profile striker that can consistently score big goals to compliment our talented midfielders… Is it just me thinking this???

  48. JonJon says:

will, the 5 years thing is abit over exaggerated..theres a good reason why weve gone that long without a trophy and its more complex than ppl think..its not for lack of trying

    ktr thanks mate..
it really is diabolical. theres not even no randomness to it..its systemised decision making 1 pen every two games, enough to help them and not enough for ppl to suspect..until you see the actual incidents and think wait a minute he dived..again..

    bullschlacken

  49. Steve Palmer says:

    KT,
I only hope we play a full team of our best players, he wouldnt gamble with all our hopes would he?
please tell me he wouldn’t !

  50. JonJon says:

i wish ppl would stop worrying about the CC…
    we are the arsenal..
we are playing sodding ipswich, and then relegation fodder wham or brum
come on guys do u think chelsea or the mancs would be scared of those teams??
how can we complain the players dont have the winning mentality when the fans are worried about ipswich??
have faith ppl..stop the negatives we’ll go mad if we lose but until then have faith
if we dont beleive then we cant complain about the players attitudes can we??

  51. Steve Palmer says:

Father Bear, sorry mate just noticed your comment, your right mate Adebayour was never my favorite striker but he knew how to put them away, i personally was happy with Chamakh, but he never scored in a game and it looks like he got up AW nose and hasn’t been the same since i’d like him back as he was, every body else hits it straight at the keeper, but at least he did get some past, not been that impressed with RVP since he came back, perhaps his about to unleash, either that or we may have to look elsewhere. Bendy needs an opperation his mind should look at his shooting He’s the only one who can’t see it

  52. Suhail.TV says:

Hi, rico,.. Good post by author. But I feel it’s not fair to dubb it as a downfall after city game who are now in top 2. We done it well against chels and birs.. who both were supposed to be exploiters of our style. FA performance infact deserves slaps..por stupesto.

  53. Steve Palmer says:

Hi Suhail.tv, when you have as much of the play as we did in that game, and fail to win, something is not right.

  54. Will says:

No point being on target if they are not working the keeper.

I will keep saying it, we need an instinctive striker.

  55. Suhail.TV says:

Hi, palmer, you are right.. Seeing that game, I had a feeling we could play it for 2 days and could’nt score. Hope that’s an odd one.

  56. JonJon says:

    basically what im saying is

    FUCK ADEBAYOR 🙂

the man was a pretender if you guys wanna talk about clinical strikers…this is the man 😉

  57. JonJon says:

suhail theos been abit good last few games
and titis back next few weeks to show em all how to shoot properly 😉

  58. JonJon says:

because if they dont webb will expose them for helping manutd..if they dont protect him its basically admitting what a set of corrupt fixing bastards they are
you scratch my back and il scratch yours and everybody makes loads of money

  59. Steve Palmer says:

I have a feeling our Theo could just be the change we need, his still a bit naive but he has toughened up, ive got good feelings for his and our future

  60. Joaquim Moreira says:

wonder if Wenger watched Leeds play. I say watch and see not. See, everyone can see, is important to observe the coaches and eventually to the commentators. Also this weekend, said in one of our facebook groups (Latin America) that Arsenal should see the summary of the last game of the Fc. Porto. Two major goals were scored off the area. This is because the Fc Porto has a similar game with Arsenal but with alternatives. Arsenal is always the same beautiful game, but without resorting to alternatives (good) that has to play both ends, shooting from a distance, etc.. Add your comment to this: for whom he played football (:-)), knows that a well-formed defense, playing together, closing the pass lines and knowing the players or the gambling habits of the enemy, much less get tired, and psychological advantage gained cheer and entertainment (eg Braga 2 Arsenal 0). Wenger does not change the game at the interval. Again this weekend we saw the cunning of Mourinho (Vila Real Madrid). In Part 1, Madrid was a great team disoriented before the Villa game. Mourinho moved to break the team: forward left the Brazilian defense and went on to play with three defenders, and drew Diarra and entered Khedira, “pointed” to Ronaldo who had to solve the game. Result: The Villa Real longer has the ball, and Madrid won 4-2 (2-2 at halftime but it is remaining the same, Madrid lose …). For the rest: chelsea had a very strong defense, strong midfield and a forward from another world besides being very well targeted, MU, strong defense, collective cohesive, some above average players and referees to help, I think spuds that can take over the team they have.

im expecting the club to move quickly now, will
none of the usual bollox we do with transfers
    ‘how much?’
    ’15mil’
    ‘no way. 14.95 mil’
    ‘no, we want 15mil’
    ‘deals off then’

just pay it and get him and he better be decent not no cygan or senderos or stepanovs

  63. P-McG says:

Joaquim Arsenal have had more shots on target than any other Premier League club this season – 134 in 21 games at an average of over six per game. Shots from distance are a regular part of this side for a while, not sure why people don’t recognise that, fans get angsty when players don’t shoot through 11 opposition players from outside the box when it isn’t on.

The two problems Arsenal have that are real, and not illusions are lack of a coherent plan without the ball, whether to press or not press. And the isolation of the back four and Wenger wanting Song to play further up. Playing the offside trap so high at times and the CB’s floundering when it doesn’t come off.

Solve the Back 5 and get a coherent plan off the ball = League title.

  64. P-McG says:

Weird that Wenger has announced he will have to but, usually he knows that means the price goes up vastly.

20m for Mertsacker is pretty funny, do people not watch the guy, he has been God awful for ages, he’d be about as useful as Squillachi.

  65. Red Arse says:

    Will,

If you want a CB who is a mean bastard it sounds like you want Sol.

Rumour is he never gets a round in! 🙂

  66. Red Arse says:

    P-Mc,

Could not agree more. Mertsacker has been slow and poor for most of this season.

He is tall but useless, not worth £5m. Actually he is worthless to us, in my opinion.

    Hi Jonjon. 🙂

  67. SD-London says:

Got 2 minutes before jetting off, howdy everyone ?

Responding to the post, yes please dont say we should look at MAnure Utd and The Spuds for lesson on effective passing attacking football.

We are the masters of that kind of game and we taught them all.

We know what we lacked and what has being preventing us from winning a trophy in the past 5years,

We lacked good CBs and good goalkeepers simples.
We do score goals and shed loads of goals.
Game against MAn cIty was a one off and we were to urgent and unlucky at that.

But concerning the fact that our attack is not fast enough , it is only due to the fact that we lost Flamini and Rosicki has lost his old spark.

Flamini could run with Hleb and Henry and that made us unstoppable.
FAbregas’s speed has increased lately and with Walcott getting more clinical in front of goal, it is a matter of time before we unleash the speed kings in Walcott , Arshavin and Fabregas in a Nuclear mind bugling attack.

Watch that space , they are all going to fall under our attacking killer instinct.

PLEASE DONT SAY WE SHOULD LEARN FROM THOSE CLUBS ANYMORE.

GOOD POST THOUGH. 🙂 SEE YAH

  68. rico says:

  73. SD-London says:

I haven’t read the post yet but i am very sure it is worth a read , so i will do that later.

But men those Arsenal players do know how to make life difficult for someone.

    Wao , Ipswich.

Well i have discovered Wenger’s weakness eventually(Apart from not buying the obvious CB and goal keeper when needed)
Wenger has no idea how to Mix his players in relation to fixtures.

Why play Fabregas when he played just 3 days ago, why play Gibbs,Walcott Arshavin , they all played 3days ago.
They all looked seriously unfit and tired he should have used NAsri who had a rest at leeds and Rosicki who hasn’t really played too many games and Denilson to as DM .

Vela should have played with Charmack really and mix the rest with our Real Carling cup team(Youth Team)i am sure they could have beaten Ipswich.

Now we are in trouble because we now have to take second leg seriously and that is definitely going to affect selection for some PL games .
