Wenger to re-sign or time for change.

Well nothing much potting today just the constant stirring of rumours and gossip so while we all trawl the headlines and the stories lets chat about something else for a change that isn’t all about who we are supposed to be buying.

Today’s post by SP, Thanks mate.

Morning Gooner’s,

Speculation mounting and most supporters feeling that by the end of the week or early next week our first big signing in quite a few years will finally emerge.
Our Usbek share holder has had his say on the subject and of course he knows that Rooney would be a welcome signing. I felt that his statement to the press was quite well timed, the man comes out with little one liners a couple of times a season. Pick the bones out of that Stan, that’s how i take them anyhow.
Gazidiz has got to come out with a major signing of that i am  sure,  what a mug he will look if after all the talk we end up with a couple of cheapies, supporters would never believe a statement again from him prior to the season ticket closing date.
Wenger has kept his head down over the last few weeks, has he been at the Emirates or has he been chatting to perspective players, or family. I read that Wenger has been holidaying but the way Wenger likes the personal touch with players i feel that he will be trying to negotiate with perspective candidates. Players love to feel that a clubs Manager has put himself out specially for them, its a way to get close to a player and his family, like a welcoming hand, words and contracts spoken in person mean so much more than just an offer from one club to another. Personal details that are found out by a personal meeting can be very beneficial if said player signs. Many players know Wenger  by sight, they also read that he honours contracts, even if said player does not work out he will still have a job until his contract runs out, even if he has not got the win bonuses from playing regularly he will still collect his negotiated wage.
Wenger in my mind has been Arsenals greatest Manager of all time, he has though become stale in my opinion. We’re told our accounts at Arsenal have never looked better. Huge profits being recorded and commercial deals signed and of course one of the best stadiums in the World.
Under Wenger we are now attracting sponsors who want to be a part of Arsenals future, Mega millions are being reported to be invested and that in itself is successful, only thing missing is success on the pitch. Many will say that success has come with inclusion to champions league since it started and i would have to agree. As a supporter i feel my loyalties should be to the team itself, trophies are what supporters claim as proper success, i am no different but i have to stand in admiration for what Wenger has done for Arsenal FC.
Is Wenger the man to lead us in what now seems a new era, if our spending power has now changed and we are now ready to compete with the top spenders in the premier league/World is Wenger the man to mount that pedestal and finally end the barren years we have had to endure. Personally i feel that Wenger has done fantastically well for us, yes i have my moans and groans about him all the time in fact but i then ask myself who i would install to replace him, would the new man know enough about the hard times we have gone through, would it be fair to Wenger now things have picked up to change Managers.
Reading between the lines of what has been written and said by the Arsenal hierarchy Wenger will say when he wants to go but the Club obviously want him to stay on for longer than his current contract.
I feel that now could be a very good time for Wenger to go and a new man come in, i wonder if Wenger now 63 years old has the go in him to start to change his ways, by that i mean to actually spend on top players to enter bidding wars with the top teams and to actually win those bids. For years now Wenger has seemed to duck out as soon as a big spender enters the fray.
Speaking personally i feel Wenger would buckle if he came up against a Mourinho in a bidding war, i feel he would think about the money and feel he could get the same kind of talent cheaper, i feel Wenger would always look at the expense and knowing how tight things have been in the past would struggle to sign that very special player. So for me a new Manager for a new era. I feel that we have to show our muscle and show commitment to the team we field, top players gelled with top players and success will follow. Players around the world, clubs as well, need to quake when they know we are interested in them or their players, they need to know that Champions League matches with our manager in the stands because he has been suspended from the season before would be intolerable. We need to impose ourselves and show the kind of football which claims respect.
Wenger for me has been superb, i personally could not think of a better Manager to get us through the tough times, but we are out of the tough times and i wonder if Wenger is tough enough to take us that step forward. Wenger has over the years been ridiculed he has had to endure sitting in the stands on Champions league Matches he has been sent to the stands against one of our biggest rivals United and made fun of by media and pundits for not getting further up the terraces. He has been ridiculed for his Basil Fawlty impressions when frustration has got the better of him. Is he the man to lead us on our new venture to greatness will he be taken seriously, will future signings respect him will supporters stand by him. they are the questions being asked is he a man to lead us in our quest for greatness. What’s your view.?

  1. tsgh says:

Very good SP1… you ask all the right questions in the post.

WATH, you know Ak also flies helicopters? He does not even need navigational aids to fly from the airport to Chelsea helipad via London Colney…

  2. chiangmaisteve says:

Think I would have preferred re-run of Higuain and Fellaini than having to read about Steve Palmer’s feelings. The truth of the matter is there are 5 or 6 quality high profile managers in world football – currently they are being shuffled like cards – look who is at Chelsea, Real Madrid and PSG – all very familiar names all having shelf lives with clubs of 2 or 3 years. Arsenal do not do short term flash in the pan appointments. If Wenger’s time is up who do you pick to follow.

  3. W.A.T.H says:

SP’s thoughts are as good as anyones seeing as he is prepared to do a post thats not just boring transfer bollox..!

Who do you pick to follow Wenger? That’s exactly what SP is asking chiangmaisteve…!

  4. tsgh says:

Chiangmaisteve its a matter of bringing up a topic for debate… Hig and Felliani ‘rumours’ are currently just that… until Arsenal.com confirms the said signings if any….

  5. Reece says:

If wenger was to leave id want the germany manager or the dortmund manager. Although both are unlikely to leave. But the worry for me is, ALOT of players choose arsenal because of wenger

  6. George says:

    Good post SP.

Will be a scary thought when AW decides to go , or in the unlikely event is asked to go.
I would like to see a former player involved with the club have a go.

If you see how nervous manure fans are with Moyes appointment , and that’s a good mgr with 10 yrs experience at the top level, it really is tough.

Along with th same 5/6 names that get shifted every few years , there will always be 1/2 mgrs of the moment from Spain France Italy or Germany.

Up and coming British managers??? Well , we have a few ok ones but just ok.

When we get one that is half decent the media destroy him, and quite often nicknamed and ridiculed beyond belief.

Someone who enjoyed a good career at Arsenal could also be a nervous gamble but a more popular one. No one hates shearer at Newcastle or klinsmann at spurs….

  7. saa21 says:

I think Wenger is the best manager in football today and if he leaves it would be a devastating blow to the club. He should be given a place on the board after he retires as a manager. as a fan I dont expect the team to win trophies every single year and considering the financial situation the club had with the stadium and all, a nine years drought is understandable but to be in the champions league every year thats a great achievement. Also consider the money poured in to other historically average clubs like Chelsea and Man city. clubs like that ruin the game, in American baseball there was an example like that when Florida Marlins won the world series (that’s the league championship trophy!) in the late nineties only one year then the backers turned to other ventures so the club was shit after that. I do not understand why anybody would become a fan for clubs like these, (especially after the money came in), only shallow people. And if the money stops, they would easily find another sheik backed club. Arsenal and Man United are in a league of their own, no matter how many times there pretenders win trophies they will always be average in my eyes. .

  16. Jay says:

Good post Steve, you will always get some pratt that thinks he can do better .I have always had mixed views on Wenger, often wondered who we would have got if he had left ,say 5 years ago ,and where we would be now.Not sure if anyone could have done better with Gazidis and co on their backs ,and the financial constraints from the move from Highbury. If you believe the press we will find out next season.

  17. devilgunner says:

Chaingmaisteve……….if you do not want to read about Sir SP’s genuine feelings I suggest you go and look at another site. That was deplorable and appalling.

Like Scott I challenge you to come up with tomorrow’s post if you are capable of doing so.

Unlike Steve I am not an AW fan. I call a spade a spade. But your lack of respect and sensitivity towards the feelings and writings of others throw more light on you than it does on on Sir Steve.

    Rant over.

    Good Morning Gentleman and Gentlemen.

Have we signed Bingo Bongo yet?

Is Adam earmarked for the hole or is WATH being touted for the Master’s tournament? 😆

  18. tsgh says:

You AW lover… admit it Dev… howdy?

A bid of £20M has been accept by Sicknote FC for Diaby Se Diaby… his profile says he has 2 times the leg length of Diaby and the injury record to match…
Our answer to the box to box midfielder is here…

  19. devilgunner says:

    Hi Ginge.

I am an AW lover and hater at the same time. I like the man as a person and how he portrays himself. Yet I feel that as a manager (which is different than AW the person) he has a lot to answer for decisions these last 4 to 5 years.

  20. Chuck Ekemezuma says:

I don’t think many people realise that Arsene is Arsenal. Both need each other right now for all that has taken place since since our last trophy. When two parties enter into a program of development and progress, their is usually a time-scale for acheiving a goal and will almost always mean making sacrifices, such glory in this case. It wouldn’t make sense for a change right now or any time in the near future whilst the ‘fruits of your labour’ are beginning bear fruit. A game-plan has been in-place and from what I can see, barring any trophies, things are ticking over just fine. Arsdenal needed to make huge sacrifices to compete with and to be included amongst the worlds footballing elites. Anyone cared to research this will see for themselves.

If I was a prospective manager and I had Wenger on the board I would refuse the job. When he goes he should leave with his head held high but cut his ties with the club for at least a few years to give the new man an even chance. Trying to change things with him looking over your shoulder would be a near to impossible situation. However I am convinced that before he goes the club needs to find a more proactive board because with a continuation of the present regime they will only be looking for a Wenger clone so they might as well keep the original.

  22. frednerk says:

    Afternoon All,
    Well put steve,
I agree with you on wenger, but fear for his legacy.
We all know wenger can balance the books,
We all know..Be careful what you wish for…Brigaide.

But what riles me the most about wenger is,
He has refused to replace the strong midfield presents,
we need and point blank denyed us the experienced keeper,
    we need.

  23. tsgh says:

I see Llorente has still not been confirmed at Juve yet?

He is free so I hope no funny business is happening with us taking Llorente and Hig going that way…

  24. tsgh says:

I have a question… do people truly believe that Perez is waiting for his new manager to sanction Higuain’s move? RM president’s have always bought who they wanted.. especially in a re-electio year… just being curious!

  25. Gonerjoe says:

I find it hard to believe that a manager who kept Arsenal there or there abouts on a shoestring because of the stadium debt.
Would be unable to spend the current transfer budget on big money players that would not improve Arsenal even further and win major thropies in the future.
I say get behind A Wenger and the board should another 3 years at the helm.

  26. agirlagunner says:

Hello, all!! SSP, great write. You’re getting more upbeat by the day. 😛 I do think AW is still the man to lead us. But he needs to take a gamble at the transfer market. He’s been hedging his bets for too long. And we have ended up paying considerable money for only middling players. 😕

  27. agirlagunner says:

Ginge, I don’t believe that bit on waiting for Ancelotti’s “approval” either. I think RM are just waiting for a bidding war. 😕

Goonerjoe, l am optimistic about this transfer myself. 🙂

  28. agirlagunner says:

I approve, I approve. 🙂 I hope she doesn’t read our blog, would ruin the surprise. Looks like a Chanel. 🙂 🙂 Hardly, cheap, Ginge!! 😉

I hope we sign Higuain soon so we can move on to Fellaini. 😀

  29. tsgh says:

No she doesn’t.se supports NUFC so…
Its alright I suppose. I got here a chanel one after my son was born. That set me back nearly £700… I was ‘stupid’ once… lol

I will take fellaini over any other signing this summer… Capoue will do too…

  30. agirlagunner says:

Your push present gets a big check mark. 😀

I’d like AW to bring in a more experienced keeper. Still shopping around for one though. 😉

  31. tsgh says:

    yes… what a ‘bummer’ lol

the chavs have confirmed the Schurlle deal…

Only Utd and us left now to make a move… the scums don’t count of course.

  32. stevepalmer1 says:

Evening all, Thank you all for the support with the post, and those that didn’t like it, you can’t please everybody all the time 🙂 . Thank you Wath you made it readable. I look back to the middle of last season when horrible results were coming in and i can remember th comments that were being said about our Manager. Past It, Has been, living on another planet, I can remember supporters wearing black neck warmers and talking about marches. Wenger just carried on .Fans were singing what a load of rubbish at the end of the game, and when asked Wenger said Yes we were not good, but i believe in this team and i believe they will deliver. Or words to that effect. All the blog sites were up in arms and many ST holders refused to go . All i do is ask a question and Wengers minders come out of hiding from all over the place. Yes the post was my opinion, I have been a Wenger supporter since he came but i have to be honest and say that he has got under my skin at times. But now it seems Wenger is the supporters darling again. I wonder how you will feel after the window shuts.

  33. allezkev says:

ChaingMaiSteve… I have to say, that your comments were rather mean spirited…

Well done SirStevo, a great effort on a no news day…

I have to say, that I share some of your reservations about Wenger…

  34. agirlagunner says:

Can’t have it all, Ginge. 😉

SSP!!! Where have you been? AW will only be elevated to Darling status if he buys well this summer. To at least give supporters the feeling that the club has a fighting chance at the title. We obviously can’t compete with petrodollars or ruble-bankrolled clubs; but we have to stop rummaging around the bargain bins. 😉

  35. allezkev says:

Ah, Adam beat me to it…

I must have influenced by reading about too many volts and amps… 😉

  36. stevepalmer1 says:

Hi Agag, Water off a Ducks back, :). Had to work today can you believe it, 🙂 and for the rest of the week, how else can i afford Waths tipple.

  37. allezkev says:

Tbh Steve, I reckon Wenger will probably sign a 2 year extension to his currant deal.

He’ll want to see and hopefully enjoy the fruition of the work he’s done since Nasri & Fabregas jumped ship…

Hiya Agag…. And yes, I have been shopping me ol’ buddy 😉

  38. agirlagunner says:

GG, you mean? WATH’s fine-feathered friend? 😛 He’s been a bad influence, I see. Tut tut.

AK, howdy?? 🙂 How’s driving? Been sneaking in a few trips to the shops, I hope. 🙂

  39. agirlagunner says:

Spooky, you answered before, I even asked, Kev. 😯 Well, I do usually ask THAT question.

  40. allezkev says:

Actually Agag, it’s been very busy, thanks to the tennis, I’ve not stopped till now…
More of the same tomorrow, hopefully…

  41. agirlagunner says:

Latin? What do you mean? You and Adam are spending too much time together, you said the exact same thing to that guy from Chiang Mai. 😀

  42. agirlagunner says:

Haha, Kev. I’ll make sure my bills are paid, we don’t want that cosmic connection to go fuzzy. 😉

  43. Kevin KJ says:

Hi all, W.A.T.H, Kev, Agag, ts

Well said GonerJoe, george and saa21

    SP
Interesting post Steve. Well done for taking the time to generate that for us all to have something to read and debate. Excellent. That is exactly what a forum/blog like this is for. Great that we all have different opinions and are allowed to share them and discuss, without fear of abuse. We are all Arsenal fans and are all entitled to our different opinions.that is why LG is so boring, anyone with an opposite view gets abused, so you just end up with the same posts and posters every day.

I agree with some of what you say and disagree with other points which i shall share once I get back

  44. stevepalmer1 says:

I reckon one good signing AK, and big promises after the sponsers money filters down. But i could be wrong 🙂 I feel in my bones that Wenger will only quit when he keels over in the dugout.

  45. agirlagunner says:

I’m sure she’s enjoying, Kev with her bucket (for the cava) and woofa. 😀

KKJ, Not to knock LG, but I visited once when we lost a game, and maaaan, the comments were so toxic. I didn’t ever care to repeat the experience.

  46. Adam says:

Evening all. The margin between success and failure is small. One point with regards to last season. I am not blind to Wenger’s attributes but I believe he has benefitted from the short memories of Arsenal supporters. He has had a stroke or two of luck and a fresh start. Here it is. If he seizes the opportunity and puts quality first and to some extent, money second and then buys the right players, sets an atmosphere of competitive hunger and ambition, then why not? If he once again pisses around and trades promise for pragmatism, then he will be writing his own epitaph as the fans, the financially besieged fans, will soon have had enough.

  47. agirlagunner says:

Drowning in work, eeeek. 🙁 Waiting (in vain, it feels) for our club’s first purchase of the summer. 😀

  48. Adam says:

Yes, our transfer windows are always tedious, drawn out affairs, tinged with disappointment. I really hope this one is different.

  49. agirlagunner says:

We live in hope, Adam. 😉 We are big club, lately with the mentality of a small one. 😉

  50. Adam says:

True Agag, but Wenger has some goodwill and presumably some serious money now so the wriggle room has diminished.
On that note I am off for the evening so I bid you all a good evening and Agag, a good night. 🙂

  51. Kevin KJ says:

    Agag,
Yep, me too. Some idiot on there called me a stupid ‘f’ and then that horrid ‘c’ word, just because I disagreed with him. In fact, there was a whole paragraph of profanity, could not believe it. Luckily Google translate came to the rescue 🙂 He had some strange name, Gamboo or Gambon or something. He went on to claim that Rooney is better than Dennis Bergkamp. I assumed he was a resident of some institution and was probably typing with his nose, while getting treatment for Tourette’s. It is not for kids or ladies a sad example of society and Arsenal fans. HH is different class.

  52. agirlagunner says:

    Good night, Adam! 🙂

KKJ, you know, unless I’m much mistaken, Gambon would drop in here with a comment or two, but he toes the line here. I think there are not many errr any rules about profanities at LG.

rico is very, very strict with the C word. 😉

  53. Kevin KJ says:

Yes Agag, good for Rico it must be an age thing.
Actually it’s not just age that is unfair – my two gooner sons are 23 and 20 and they would never use that language on a forum/blog – It’s more respect and upbringing I suppose, social problem. It’s not the great country it used to be unfortunately.

Looking forward to news on Higuain, hopefully that’s the first serious signing on board. Could be a good season.

  54. Lewis says:

    Good day all.

Bit late reading the post today, but a good read SP.

My personal feelings on Arsene are that this is his last chance summer. Sign some big players and have a go at the league this year, the intent would do wonders for his support. But if he does the usual and takes a punt on a cheaper alternative from ligue un and we’re out of every comp by February then it really is time to leave. I hope he takes a chance on some top players, they don’t always have to have enormous price tags but more often than not they do, so lets compete for their signatures and see where that takes us.

  55. tsgh says:

Tevez moving to Turin makes things very murky.

Llorente not confirmed… Manuel being Higuain’s fave boy… $hitty pulling out of Cavani after HH posted stats showing Pipita’s goal return was better than Cavani’s… hmmm

  56. W.A.T.H says:

Evening Ts, most seem to think Tevez to Juve makes Hig to us a certainty…! Maybe Citeh gonna go for Suarez…? Lewandowski..?

  57. allezkev says:

Wath, I know you’re probably in bed now, poor old soul, but what’s the inside track on season ticket renewals. Was the take-up the same as previous season’s, or has there been a definate drop-off in renewals?
Also, what is the actual waiting time on the much vaunted ‘waiting-list’ these days?
See ya in the morning mate….

  58. allezkev says:

Apparently, both Arsenal loanees, Wellington Silva and Samuel Galindo, can now apply for Spanish citizenship.
If true, it means they don’t need work permits to play in England.
I suppose we’ll now see if these two South American youngsters actually have any kind of future at the club?!
Wellington is a pacey winger, Galindo is a centre-mid.

  59. allezkev says:

The situation with Wellington and Galindo (if accurate) also means that Wenger only needs to apply for a work-permit for Joel Campbell.
Bring all three over and loan them out to English clubs, to see how they adapt…
All three have a couple of years left on their contracts…

  60. allezkev says:

Hopefully by Thursday, we might have some positive news concerning Higuain…

Interesting to see that both Koscielny and Carzorla have reaffirmed their ‘commitment’ to Arsenal.

I’m usually fairly cynical about these kinds of developments as they usually lead to the player/players leaving 12 months later.

But I wonder if Wenger has given them an indication of the players he’s bringing in this summer???

And with those wildly optimistic ‘Adam’ type views, i’m offski.

    Night Gooners..

  61. Adam says:

Morning Scott. People like him never come up with anything remotely constructive or interesting do they?

  62. Scott from Oz says:

Shit, even i come up with one worth reading every now and again.
    Not too often though 🙂
I have some empathy for them……until they start waffling about all that is wrong with HH.
I started on an Arsenal news aggregator, and you just see a list of titles each day.
You then jump in head first and fire away.
    I did it.
I pissed everyone off but a few were fairly tolerant and eventually you come to realise that HH is the most fair minded gang of the lot.
Where they go wrong is making one comment and then disappearing.
They will never know what they are missing.

  63. W.A.T.H says:

Afternoon you lot….. Well I was awaiting the flood of posts for this morning but nothing arrived so we’re back to the usual suspects…!

New one going up shortly but I think I’m going to do a post on Kev being camped out at Heathrow awaiting our new signings and his contract work of dropping them off at Colney..!
