Wenger set for contract extension! Gabriel reaction said it all. Ollie stars as Arsenal got top, for a few hours….

Morning all.

Arsene Wenger made three changes to the side which beat Bayern Munich on Tuesday. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came in for the injured Aaron Ramsey and Gabriel replaced Per Mertesacker who had some kind of illness. I personally believe the change was due to the pace of Lukaku. Giroud started up front with Theo Walcott dropping to the bench.

A tired Arsenal up against a strong, dogged and sometimes cheating Everton. Well, Deulofeu! But just like Lee Mason, I’ll give the guy no more of my time…

We didn’t quite hit the dizzy heights I thought we would but perhaps that was down to Ollie starting instead of Theo. Or simply because of a different tactical approach in order to incorporate the big guy, after all, he’s never going to sit on the last defenders shoulder and out do him for pace is he?

But what he did do, which Theo probably never could, is rise to height required to head home our opener from a superb Ozil cross. If that was good, Koscielny’s was perhaps better. The pace and direction from our little Spaniard’s free kick was wicked, the header to make it 2-0 was good. Very good! Ollie might not be the quickest striker in the world but his link up play yesterday was superb and to his credit, he was often in the box just begging for the right ball into him.

Barkley took a chance and shot. Gabriel stuck a foot out, the ball took a huge deflection and Petr Cech was left stranded. He had no chance…

We had chances to extend the lead. Ollie hit the bar, Ozil hit the post and a few other opportunities went begging.

Everton too had chances to snatch a point, maybe even a victory but for the first time in a long time, I truly had faith in our defence and certainly our keeper…

There was a moment late in the game which summed up this Arsenal side. Gabriel had just won a tackle and the ball had gone. He punched the air with great delight as he knew we were almost over the line…

That’s passion, that’s desire and that’s all we ask for….

Tough fixture, tough game, great result and a great week…

So, top of the league we are for a few hours at least as if City get a draw or better later, they’ll replace us… What’s more important for us is to keep the same results coming and maintain the same focus each game.

Next up is the Capital One Cup fixture against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday and I hope we see a totally different team line up against the Championship side. Many of our players need a rest after what has been a tough week.

Have a good Sunday guys and keep smiling.. Laughing even when thinking about what’s going on in West London…

PS – According to The Mirror, the Arsenal hierarchy are planning to offer Arsene a two year contract extension which would keep him at the club until 2019. On this current form, I can understand why……

Did I really just type that….? 😉

    Good Morning Lovelies and Hunkies.

Good read Rico. I enjoyed reading it. just one thing I do not agree…….If Manure win by 1-0 or 2-0 we will still be 1st on goal difference so they will not overtake us. any other result will see us go 2nd. But for now its better to keep results coming as you said.

I enjoyed yesterday’s game although we were not at the same level as the game against United. However we have to take into consideration the midweek excursions.

People are beginning to comment on the OX now. Before him it was Aaron. Patience is needed….he will come good do not worry.

  2. Tai says:

    Morning All…

    Great post Rico.

Dev…where the hell have you been? I think Arsenal will still top if Man U win by 3 – 0 only based on alphabetical order. They don’t do head-to-head in England, do they?

  3. Hell Raising Devil says:

hehe. just for me?? geez I am so lucky….. 😛

should I laugh at the chavs expense?? why should I??? I would not even pee on them if they caught fire. Esp their so called best manager.

The worst thing is that I already know that they will not become embroiled in a relegation battle.

And by the way…..if Abramovich sacks him he will have to give him 37mill. So they are caught in a catch 22 situation.

  4. Marinello says:

    Good post Rico.
What a week of great results.
Nice to see Ian Wright on MOTD highlighting some of Girouds strengths and what he brings to the team etc.
Sheffield Wednesday up next and I am sure Arsene will rest many players.
The team are all digging in and helping each other. Having Cech behind the back four must inspire confidence.
Ten games in and in a good position.

  5. Hell Raising Devil says:

    hi Tai.

I am always busy at work at this time of the year. The month of October and half of November are always tough……and I end up taking work at home with me.

On Wednesday I will go with this team……

    Macey,
    Debuchy, Mertesaker, Chamberlain, Gibbs
    Arteta, Flamini
    Ox, Ozil, Iwobi
    Ollie.

  6. Madhav - Indian Gunner says:

    Good post Rico.
“Manure will be 2nd, due to us winning the direct encounter which is superior to anything else” – Definetly re Devil…
I would like to add to that. “By winning, but by winning in Arsenal Style”.

It’s time for a change in starting line-up against shefield to give everyone a deserved rest…

I think Gabriel have all the traits to become a leader, a Captain… I will not be surprised if he become Arsenal captain in the future…

  7. potter says:

I thought yesterday that the Ox is short on confidence and sometimes is a little overawed by his opponents reputations. Twice i saw him get one on one with Jagielka and freeze , it was like he was unsure about taking on a full England international ,maybe something in the England camp has got to him. I am sure that he will come through, we discussed on the way home how his development mirrors that of Theo as he is having to wait for a place in the team . I think Wenger really wants to play him in the middle though, rather than out wide, but because of our Cazorla/ Coquelin axis using two places he suffers as does Ramsey and gets pushed out wide.

  8. Tai says:

People out again urging Wenger to spend in January.

By this time last season we didn’t know Ballerina was this good neither did we know Coquelin was our answer to the DM worries. But all Wenger did despite near disastrous first half of season was keep faith with his convictions and add only Gabriel.

Last summer he added just Cech despite screams all over the place, including from our own Henry that we needed a world class striker. Le Prof sent the vulnerable on a wild goose chase that he was after Benzema while he perfected his plans with Walcott.

Ox Chamberlain’s performance yesterday is a worry but who knows what plans AW has for all players on loan?

I think that by now Wenger more than deserves our respect and trust. Let him buy whoever if he’s convinced he’s absolutely necessary. He just proved you needn’t Vidal to beat best side in Europe and that wasn’t by luck. He made maximum use of the potentials of the players he believes in.

The little I know of Wenger tells me he’ll only add to this squad if there’s a season-ending injury to a major major player. Otherwise it’s another window of heartbreaks for those who believe the best tubers of yams are in his neighbour’s barn.

  9. Hell Raising Devil says:

I like the Theo/Ollie rotation system. No one is the main man….yet both are important. So they will be played according to requirements.

I would go for Ollie against Sheff since I feel that they will try to play a lot of high balls and Ollie, for all those who criticise him does use his height to help in defence. Mertesaker as well.

I played Iwobi instead of Campbell as I feel that if the latter is going to leave in January then its better to blood in Iwobi. Plus in the game he played, Campbell did not even warrant a 6 out of 10 rating although he did work hard.

  10. rico says:

Potter, I though OC was our weakest link yesterday but he’s good, and I’m sure he’ll get much better the more he plays. He really needs to take advantage of Ramsey being injured…

I’d certainly play him on Tuesday again…

  11. rico says:

I’d rest nearly all of who played yesterday, and Theo. Give Campbell a game up front and see what he has to offer, then the likes of Gibbs, Debuchy, Flamini, Iwobi, Jeff (if fit) Ospina (if fit) and a few other kids…

  12. Tai says:

    Dev…

Oh good. Make a living first then hobby… lol.

You’re risking Ozil and Ollie for COC? Not me and I doubt Wenger would either.

    I’d go with

    Mackey

    Debuchy, Per, Chambers, Gibbs

    Flamini, Arleta

    Sheaf(spelling)

    Iwobi, Campbell, Ox

  13. Canadian Gooner says:

Good Morning to The Lady of the House and all fellow Gooners in residence.

Rico – Another concise summation of our most recent game.

Devil – I understand your sentiments. However, I hope you’ll forgive me for I can’t suppress my urge to chortle at the situation at Smirnoff Bridge.

Oh how the mighty have fallen! It is just so delicious watching those arrogant prats, manager and players, being given such an extended lesson in humility. Whether they learn from their lesson is another matter, but long may it continue.

  14. Canadian Gooner says:

Tai – Were to emergence of Bellerin and Le Coq good planning or good luck. Regardless, the club are a possible couple of injuries away from disaster. We still more depth in a few key positions, especially if we have long runs in the cups.

  15. rico says:

Morning Cg, hope life treats you well… I’ve given up thanking people re my posts by the way… lol

Spot on re that little club in West London…

  16. Allan Michaud says:

Just wondering what the line up will be in midweek? We really need to rest pretty much everyone and I hope the only starters from the Everton game are Giroud, Ox and Gabriel. However, we seem to be lacking an attacking midfield option if we rest both Santi and Ozil. Even if Arteta is fit we are still short as I think he needs to replace Santi, while Flamini taken the DM spot. I guess Ox could play in the middle with Iwobi out wide maybe. One thing is for sure, we are going to have a hell of a bench.
    Macey
    Gibbs
    Debuchy
    Chambers
    Gabriel
    Flamini
    Arteta
    Attacking Mid????
    Ox
    Campbell
    Giroud

  17. Allan Michaud says:

With The Ox looking like very much like a weak link so far this season, I wonder if Gnabry could feature after Christmas as he’s not getting games at West Brom. I’d really like to see him get some games for us as for me he looks a more rounded player than Ox.

  18. rico says:

    Welcome Allan..

I hope all the first 11/13 get rested, bar OC and perhaps one of Merts/Gabriel depending on Merts fitness/illness…

  19. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – Regarding “…I’ve given up thanking people re my posts by the way… lol” – no problem there, as long as you keep up the good work.

  20. Adam says:

Morning Rico and all. I don’t know what it looked like on TV but in the ground we were very dominant and Everton were really feeding on scraps as they had difficulty actually constructing much themselves. Having said that, we really should have closed the game out with a third goal. Why Arsene didn’t make the substitutions that seemed very obvious I don’t know, but seeing Gibbs come on and go straight into a striker’s role and noting that Flamini did the same was odd, to say the least. It was, by that time, obvious that conceding 20 yards of open space in front of Barkley could prove potentially damaging so that made things even more curious.
But, a well deserved win and a useful 3 points. Mourinho’s meltdown is the gift that just keeps giving but I really hope they don’t sack the disgusting little creep as the entertainment factor is excellent.

  21. scottfromoz says:

Failure to buy means taking a massive risk.
Strengthening means leaving no stone unturned, so it’ll come down to simply being good enough, or not.
    I say buy 🙂
Even one player will help, if it’s the right one.

  22. rico says:

    Morning Mg and Adam..

Not surprised re Sherwood, no managers are given much time these days…. Monk saved his job yesterday, if the press are to be believed…

  23. rico says:

I’d blame Flamini and Gibbs Adam, total lack of discipline imo. They must have been told before going on the pitch that their job was to shut up shop however…..

Glory hunters perhaps and could be the reason both seldom get much playing time…

  24. Adam says:

If it’s true that a team is a reflection of its manager then it is no surprise that Villa are drab and rather grey under the hangdog Sherwood.
Perhaps Mourinho could turn then into title contenders with his brilliance.

  25. Canadian Gooner says:

Adam – “… Mourinho’s meltdown is the gift that just keeps giving but I really hope they don’t sack the disgusting little creep as the entertainment factor is excellent.” Amen to that!

It would be even more amusing to see Chelski battling relegation at the end of the season, but I’m sure Abramovich will be throwing more money at the problem come January.

  26. Canadian Gooner says:

Adam – I doubt even Abramovich has enough money to turn Villa into contenders, at least not this season.

  27. Tai says:

I don’t see Man City beating Man U today…the best they get is a draw. They can’t go to Old Trafford without Aguero and Silva and win…they do that and they can as well be crowned champions. They should drop points when injuries come knocking or we stand no chance.

I’m praying for a slim victory for Man U.

  28. Hell Raising Devil says:

Always pray for draws between opponents Tai. That way a point is lost by everyone. remember…3 draws are equivalent to one win and two losses.

So yes I pray for a draw between Shitty and manure.

  29. Dublingunner says:

Afternoon, I think we,ve found our new warrior in Gabriel, I,d definitely play him Tuesday along with a few first teamers, I think it,s an insult to Sheff wed, if we were to rest 7 or 8 players, We simply must take all matches serious, as a defeat whoever it,s against or whatever trophy it,s in, filters down and confidence does take a knock.
I,m sure AW will get the balance right, but needs to get the lads up for this game and not think they,ve only to turn up, Thats what makes the great teams, great

Tai, i,ll think reserve judgement till the end of the season, before i acknowledge that he,s lack of business in the Transfer window was warrented, while rightly so,there is a feel good factor at the moment, there is still a long way to go, I still feel we are only an injury to a striker or Coquelin etc, away from blown our chances of the title this season, we have been here before.

  30. potter says:

Agreed about the draw, let it be a low scoring draw with a few sendings off and possibly the odd knock or hamstring pulls here or there.

  31. Adam says:

CG. I agree. The little tosser is certainly giving him something to think about but I hope he doesn’t sack him. I think I read that it would cost £30 million to get rid of him. I’d like to see Abramovich hire Ancelotti and tell the little creep that he is going to be his assistant manager from now on. I doubt that marriage would last long but it would be fun.
Then, after that, he should be keel hauled.

  32. potter says:

I’ve got a boat only a little one but then so is he . I sell tow ropes so all we need is to kidnap him and find a river.

  33. potter says:

If it’s to be the wash we will have to wait until they play Peterborough or Cambridge although the way things are going that might not be such a long time.

  34. Hell Raising Devil says:

I feel that what we are seeing now is the result of Mourinho being forced to sell Cech to AFC. Maybe he is sulking? maybe he wants to pay back Abramovich for over ruling him? maybe the players have taken it badly? maybe the players feel that the chavs are now a selling club?

    Who knows.

I bet though, that the Cech transfer has more to it than meets the eye.

Remember…..even salt looks like sugar from a disance.

  35. Dublingunner says:

This season is definitely proving how important a player Cech was to Chelsea,
It,s looking increasingly likely that they,ve sold us their best player, which must be sickening Mourinho.
What a master stroke by Wenger to really rub it in.
Still appears to be the signing of the season.

  36. rico says:

Totally agree re Cech, one of AW’s best signings during his time at Arsenal… Certainly in the GK department… 😉

What do you guys make of the Vieira stories?

  37. Dublingunner says:

Ye, not watching it Rico, but from what im reading about it, it,s a scrappy game, neither side can put together a cohesive attack. looking increasingly like a no score draw at the moment.

  38. rico says:

I’ve just turned it on Dublin, it is scrappy…

Spent the last few hours racing around to ensure I was back by 4pm… Needn’t have bothered… lol

Totts are 4-1 up against Bournemouth…

  39. Dublingunner says:

Bit of late drama, I believe. City definitely missing both Silva and Aguera,
Jeez judging on today, The title is there for the taking, If we can keep players fit, I know thats a big if, but stranger things have happened.

  40. potter says:

0-0 finished , a few bookings and little else . We go second on goal difference . No real problem there.Totts won 5 – 1 . no problem there either.

  41. Joe says:

New players in January how about
Jack Wilshire what can I say
Danny Welbeck 10 months with a knock on the knee
Tomas Rosicky if he still exists
    And a new DM
I’d like a really fast out and out winger

  42. Tai says:

I wanted a slim Man U win but a draw ain’t bad. Any team that misses Aguero and Silva should struggle against top opposition. If Rooney was anywhere like a striker, Man U should have won. Poor City display, very poor.

  43. tsgh says:

Dg- As mentioned in August; the table will most probably finish
    1. City
    2. Arsenal
    3. Yanited
    4. Chavs.

This is only because City did not kicked off at 15:00 on saturday on sunday but on the Monday night…

  44. Tai says:

Ts, that your finish table stinks…one, I’m betting we’re winning this title this season. Two, Chelsea won’t make top 4.

  45. Tai says:

Rico…with Klopp, Liverpool stand best bets to knock Chelsea out of top 4. I’m supporting them all the way until they play Arsenal. I was celebrating Benteke’s 77th minute strike before Mane killed my joy with the 88th minute equaliser.

  46. tsgh says:

Tai- I always said we had a chance to win title. The caveat is no tem kicking off at 3pm has won title in over 10 years…

But records are there to be broken so; all the luck to the boys
Before first game was kicked this season I also said Jose will have struggle due to 3rd season syndrome… history repeats itself…

  47. rico says:

Tai, I detest Liverpool so no supporting them at all from me… I’d rather they finish mid-table and Saints or another club get top four…

  48. tsgh says:

I think Klopp will do well next season when he gets his chance to implement his philosophy…; this season its not looking good. He will finish 5th like he did at BVB in his first season.

  49. rico says:

Ts, they’ll probably ship a few out to get a few pounds back a then spend again. That’s been their theme over the last couple of summers….

  50. Tai says:

Chelsea are in so much deep shit that I think Klopp may grab 4th spot. Sorry Rico…I’d support any team to make certain they make Chelsea drop out of top 4. The only team I trust to do that presently is Liverpool. Spurs are looking good but can they? And no Gunner would wish Tots top 4 all the same.

  51. tsgh says:

Basically, the winner of EPL never kicks off at 3pm.

Chavs last season winners kicked off against Burnley at 8pm; the season before city against NUFC…; it goes all the way to Fergie’s era

  52. rico says:

Tai, each to their own eh… Lol by the way, I didn’t mention the Totts…. Lol

Ts, every team kicks off at 3pm at some stage, your theory makes no sense at all… Well, not to me…

  53. tsgh says:

Tai- Its one of those trivial stats I keep an eye on…

Like our near perfect stats on late saturday k.o and near abysmal record at 12:45pm k.o; the caveat at 12:45 is whether we played away or home mid-week.

🙂 Chelsea are not in shite. The points difference is no worst than the season when Pobin Van Judas captained us and he scored 30 goals for us…
Difference is that Jose’s tactics are just a glorified version of Fat sam’s tactics. They both work on the short term bases…; its unsustainable past 2 seasons that is why apart from Porto he has been sacked after 3 seasons at every club..

  54. tsgh says:

    Tai- re. your 6:57pm I meant no team kicking off on the opening day of the season at 3pm…;

It could just be that a team watching their title competitors draw or lose on saturday gives them much more of an incentive to make sure they win when they play on sunday or monday night…

  55. tsgh says:

Only 4 winners out of 16 EPL seasons have kicked off at 3pm.
During AW’s tenure we have won title 2 times kicking off at 3pm against Everton in 2003. 2-1 and leeds 1-1 in 1997.

Yanited kicked off at 3pm also winning 4-0 against Bolton. In 1997 Yanited also kicked off at 3pm.

  56. tsgh says:

    Lol Tai. Not a jinx…

I think Dg will back me up on this stats as well.. we discussed it in August….
but the title is there for taking if we can rotate squad properly…

  57. tsgh says:

Tai just a flavour of last 5 seasons winners. my stats are always water tight. 😉 😛
    2010-11 – Manchester United
    Manchester United 3-0 Newcastle (August 16 2010)
    2011-12 – Manchester City- Manchester City 4-0 Swansea (August 15 2011)
    2012-13 – Manchester United- Everton 1-0 Manchester United (August 20 2012)
    2013-14 – Manchester City- Manchester City 4-0 Newcastle (August 19 2013)
    2014-15 – Chelsea- Burnley 1-3 Chelsea (August 18 2014)

** 2015-2016- Arsenal- Arsenal vs WHU- 0-3… breaking the chain… no voodoo or juju. 😛

Rico- are the drivers a bit too brave todayor I am just imagining things? lol

  58. tsgh says:

History does not repeat itself? not sure it is all coincidence Tai. Empires and kingdoms have been built the same way…

When you have the chance read the ‘The Search for the Manchurian Candidate’ or Project MKUltra… you may change your mind….

  59. rico says:

Tai, the only stat I think holds substance is possession and even that proves very little as goals scored wins football matches, nothing else…

All the stuff in history is nothing more than history…. It’s totally irrelevant imo….

  60. scottfromoz says:

    Draws…..live it.
    Keep the, coming.
As for 4th spot, West Ham are in a better position than Chelksi at present to claim it, so why not?
    Anyone but Chelski, though.

    Mourinho Must Stay….

  64. allezkev says:

Nope Rico, nor rubber rings… 😉

The Jurgen Klopp experience has gone off like a lead balloon…

Another draw at the Bridge next weekend methinks….

Chelski at Stoke in midweek should be interesting….

  65. potter says:

Next time your up that way try the Constantia just past Cromer at East Runton. A Cypriot family restaurant where the brothers do a musical act on Saturday nights . Always worth the taxi fare home after the party.

  66. scottfromoz says:

Rico, a mate who is a serious Chelski fan….long term ST holder…forgive me as I know him through greyhounds lol….for the first time even he says they’re in serious trouble.
Fans do not understand Joe Says obsession with Wenger unless he truly fears us, and he reckons the title is there for us to lose, if we strengthen in January-yeah I know 🙂
It’s the first time he’s treated us as serious threat as well as being really worried where his club is headed.
Now I was quite gracious as he’s a good guy, but I was laughing my bloody head off on the inside 🙂 🙂 🙂

  67. Tai says:

    Morning All…

I have more Chelsea friends than Arsenal’s…

I wouldn’t want Mourinho to be sacked…I’d love to see him struggle all season and miss top 4. I’d love to see him answer the question on what really is failure.

I want to see him rebuild a team next season from an all-time low. I want to see him manage crisis all season long…then I’ll write my last piece on him. Idiot!

  68. Wavy says:

We’ve seen this chavs meltdown with the poisonous Pygmy before. His first incarnation in a very similar way. Team losing, team style pragmatic rather than fluent, loads of tempestuous pressers, etc etc. At the end of his first manifestation I concluded that he was bored and had had enough! He figured his payoff was wuorth taking and he went. A great deal of laughing and cheering accompanied his dismissal and departure.
Has anything changed this time? No I don’t think so! A leopard cannot change his spots anymore than tiny feet can’t alter his patterns of behaviour, personality or even his charmless soul! I believe he was knocked back by the owner when he demanded new players and got none, he was even more peeved when de Bruyne returned to these shores so expensively and so far so successfully, that must have upset him, a very grazed ego there then. The dropping of Terry, the public admonishing of several high profile players, public criticism is never conducive to team morale! And of course his own ‘special one’ agenda? An enormous payoff? A less public profile? A need for a monastic retreat to search for his inner self? Or is it, he just can’t be arsed anymore!

I’m rambling now! But time he was gone, he has become a pariah and is besmirching the good( ish) name of football. And as an unwanted immigrant he should be repatriated forthwith!

    Morning all

  69. Adam says:

Morning Rico and all. The Chelsea stuff is great isn’t it? To me it confirms what I have always thought in that you can be very good at something yet still be an idiot and a fool. He has been a successful manager and has found himself in the right place at the right time but has believed his own hype for years now. His obvious obsession with Wenger, fuelled by the scumbag press in this country who have been blowing smoke up his arse for years, is now laid bare for all to see.
Wenger’s words before the Everton game and subsequently included a pointed reference to humility, a term that is completely unknown to that revolting craphead Mourinho. Once you lose perspective and actually believe you are the dogs bollox then a fall won’t be far away. His pathetic little plot to try and humiliate Arsene after the Charity Shield with the handshake stuff told me that he was actually more interested in bringing the weight of his supposed superiority down upon our club in trying to show the world Mourinho, the gracious loser. Yeah right. Wenger saw through it and we saw through it, but it was only the usual morons who accused Wenger of snubbing the Portuguese knob. It has become completely out of control and quite sick and his press friends are now distancing themselves from him. Except for that gas-meter thief Danny Murphy who trotted out the “We all love him” crap again on MOTD. We don’t. We effing detest him because he is a total and absolute prick of the highest order.
Everything that is coming down on him, he deserves fully. His midweek quotes about the referee being weak and naive exposed him for the stupid, little childish pratt he really is and I bet that quite a few of his players think so too. The fact that, when Wenger used those terms to describe Mike Dean, he was right, has completely eluded him as he sees the world through the prism of his own egotistical greatness and arrogance.
Personally I hope that his fall from grace and his subsequent disintegration take place over a long time and in the public eye. I want Chelsea to stick with him for a decent while yet.
