Vela return is on! Will Arsene Wenger target relegated clubs in the summer?

Morning all,

Sorry to desert you all on this fine sunny day, but not knowing when the sun will next shine, I’ve decided to pack me and Fido off for a day at coast…

So, Loric Remy has joined Julio Cesar in saying that he wants to stay in the Premier League next season. Obviously, that won’t be with his current club because good old Arry couldn’t work his magic this time around and QPR are relegated.

Arsene Wenger has so often talked up the striker.

Just a couple of years ago, our manager was full of praise for the now Qpr man:

Remy improves all the time. Reminds me of a young Thierry: his runs and the speed at which he plays.

And, if Wenger really has been keeping an eye on him and plans to make a move for him this summer, I doubt Remy will take too much time before saying yes. Well, that’s if he spoke the truth back in 2010:

Arsenal are the club I want to join. I won’t deny they are my priority. Arsenal are a young, ambitious side and I love to watch them play.

It is the ideal place for me. I spoke with Thierry about them and asked him lots of questions about life there.

That is because I have been an Arsenal fan since I was little. I was not disappointed with what he told me.

We so often ask for Wenger to sign Premier League proved players, and surely we have to agree that since coming to England, Remy has proved he can play in this league.

He’s scored a few cracking goals for a side which really is poor. Would it be quite so bad if he did make a summer switch to us?

I’m not sure it would, especially if we signed Jovetic as well…..

Another linked to us is Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, a defensive midfielder who, according to The Daily Express, has caught our managers eye. He’s been in England now since 2008 and despite signing a new contract back in February, I bet a move to London would be tempting.

Finally, Carlos Vela admits he could return to Arsenal, talking to L’Equipe he said:

Going back to Arsenal? It could happen at any moment, but I don’t want to think about it.

My life is at Real Sociedad, and it is with that shirt that I want to play in the Champions League next season.

I think that would be a silly move. Vela clearly doesn’t want to come back, his comments make that clear.

Wenger failed him once, don’t do it again I say.

That’s enough for today, catch up a bit later…

Have a good one all….

  1. TT says:

God not Remy please no! We need a world class striker and even though he is good he aint that. We should be aiming much higher than this and buying basement bargain OK players from relegated teams is going to see us regress not move forward.

  2. Canadian Gooner says:

Good Morning to the Lady of the House and fellow Gooners in residence.

Rico – Enjoy your day at the beach.

  3. Canadian Gooner says:

The season hasn’t even ended, yet the silly season has well and truly begun; but the transfer window wont open for weeks. We have already been linked with dozens of players, including eight or more goalies. Obviously we will be linked with many more players before the window closes. Will we be linked with more than a hundred before that happens?

Either way, I’ll be happy if we buy three to four quality, hopefully world class experienced, players in the spinal positions we have already discussed ad nauseum this season. Hopefully Arsene will do some, most or all of his business early; so we the long suffering supporters can enjoy a nice long and relaxing summer vacation. If not, I may turn off my computer, drop off the net and put player transfers out of my mind before returning in August.

  4. Lewis says:

Agreed CG. Every year the broken promises basically shape the fans views for the year, when results don’t come as they haven’t for years we quite rightly look back at the previous transfer windows and see there was ample time to sort out the glaring holes in our squad. This shouldn’t have been acceptable but now is even less acceptable, Arsene must address these issues this close season! We all know what they are.

  5. devilgunner says:

Or Gus Ceasar for that matter. He will shore up the defence and move us on the next level. 😆

    How are you WATTY mate?

  6. Canadian Gooner says:

Jay – I hope your tongue is planted firmly you in your cheak and you’re not serious.

W.A.T.H – All too true, that is why I may drop out until August. If we have a repeat of last summer’s window, I will have ripped out my hair and be found babbling incoherently while banging my head against walls, lamp posts, etc.. In dropping out I will remain ignorant of the transfers, if any, and have a blissful summer.

  7. W.A.T.H says:

Dev, Add Chris Whyte to that awesome defense with Gus…. I am fine mate hope you and the family are well.

Is Jovetic also what we need Lewis…? Is he the proper goalscorer that we need and crave..? Lewandowski is the one I want and have done for a while… Will we get him..? doubt it..!

  8. Canadian Gooner says:

DG – You must have fallen into a vat of very strong ale or scrumpy and drank your way back to the top. I wouldn’t your head after one like that.

  9. Canadian Gooner says:

W.A.T.H – With the humbling of the ‘Spanish Giants’ this week; they will both be in the market for any and all top players like Lewandowski, whether they can afford them or not. The Special ‘Needs’ One didn’t look so cocky on Tuesday. Mind you he is going to “return to a club where the fans love” him.

  10. devilgunner says:

Bigger than Cesar you say Lewis???

wait a mo…………Champions lge winner, World Cup winner, World club championship winner, 3 italian lges etc etc etc.

And you say we have to think bigger??? 😆

  11. W.A.T.H says:

Dev, the problem is Cesar has also played like a lemon in quite a few games this season, he’s looked class in others and crap in just as many, can he be bothered or has he lost consistency..?

Lewis, I like Jovetic for sure but if we bought him I still feel we would need an out and out goalscorer..! We need that big physical player for central midfield and I think we also are crying out for a proper winger… we don’t have one… Look at the chaos both Ribery and Robben cause… Bayern use width properly with 2 proper wingers…!

  12. devilgunner says:

I agree with your point about the wingers Watty.

But I guess even the best keeper on earthwould look pathetic behind a leaky defence.

But I still would like him in front of Chezzer……..he would help him a lot.

    Righto off now

    cu later Lady and Gentlemen

  13. Lewis says:

Very good points Wath. I was thinking the same thing when writing about Cesar. Keepers always seem to have their best game of the season against us!

  14. W.A.T.H says:

Cheers Dev, also agree with you Cesar has BIG experience so could be a good buy, I like Adler and also Bergovic but would we spend 15mil on a keeper? highly unlikely.

  15. Micko says:

Make hay while the sun shines rico, Wenger’s been doing that for years.
Thought we were finally trying to get rid of the deadwood this summer not bring more in.
    Morning all and you wath.

  16. Micko says:

Ticking over wath, me cynical, never, well maybe a bit, more envious really, the sun never comes out over here.

  17. W.A.T.H says:

Least it’s always nice and green where you are though Micko 😀

I want the next three games out the way so we can get on with the summer and finally see exactly where our club wants to head…. Do they at last genuinely see we need quality or are they just there to rip us off and carry on with the spin and bullshit?

  18. Wavy says:

So what you are all saying is we need a goalscorer. Someone like the prolific John Jensen! That’s what we’ll end up with a bargain basement midfielder who Mr Wenger thinks he can turn into a top goal scorer?
Transfer speculation does my head in. Every player who is considered worthy by the press will be linked to us. I, myself, me, personally I shall wait until all deals are posted on the club web site. Then and only then will I believe we have a new player. Whilst speculation, postulation and equivocation are all part of the close season “game” wondering who will turn up and sign on can be quite exciting but, at the end of the deadline it is utterly pointless.(As we will be) if we don’t buy a …….wait for it……..new goalkeeper, centre back, defensive midfielder, goalscorer, and whilst we are about it, how about a new manager and coach….!
    Waste of good drinkinking time!
    Dream on!

  19. Gooner jim says:

Morning all. I agree with a few voices. Remy is good but we need world class quality, spuds goin in for damiao, that’s what we should be doing. If spurs can do it why not us??? Cavani, capuoe, cesar, and new centre back please. Plus what do people think about this…. Since we’ve been at emirates we play nothing like the highbury days, not as silky and fluid. Simple answer : make the pitch smaller!!!!! We were mustard when playing tight fast football. No one could keep up with us. Just a thought.

  20. W.A.T.H says:

Wavy have you been drinking that cynic drink with Micko 😉

After years of spin and rubbish it’s balls on the block time for the board I reckon….! The worm has finally turned, fans are apathetic they are not going to games you cant even give tkts away is that what the club wants, they not stupid at all and for all the comments they see whats going on, will they act? they have new sponsors they have to have a decent team they must know this… How hard do they push the manager to buy or have they all along been with holding funds…? I think this summer we will finally see a shift BUT if we don’t watch the shit well and truly hit the fan.

  21. Fanzee says:

Nice thots mate. But we need 2 wake up early if we want 2 win trophy ds time arnd. We nid lewandowski and chicharito upfront. Sale giroud if posible and sale gervinho. 4get abt jovetic, go 4 ajax’s erikson at d mdfield. Sale sagna and go 4 sakho. Sale Ramsey, Get Draxler and we can win d whole four at once.

  22. Canadian Gooner says:

W.A.T.H – From his interviews and candid shots of him on the sidelines, I’m sure Arsene is well aware of the fans and supporters feelings about the team and what it needs. Whether Ivan Gazidis and the BOD, especially Silent Stan Kroenke, are aware or even care is another matter. However, Arsene’s recent marked change in dealing with the players; sitting under/non-performing first eleven players, moving on or loaning out fringe Academy players much sooner, etc. gives me reason to believe we may see other changes at our club. Hopefully that includes strengthening the playing squad with some experienced first string recruits. No more promising up and comers or make-dos. We’ll all just have to be patient and wait and see. Hard though that may be on our nerves and spirits. For now, I’m optomistic.

  23. Xr!s says:

I don’t think Remy is that bad but he’s injury prone. A top-notch forward might come in with huge transfer fee and wage and be an Arsenal-made Shevchenko. Superstar names don’t necessarily mean we will be much improved. Madrid spent millions on superstars, they just have few trophies to show for it. Buy the necessary players, motivate them, play to their strengths, give them objectives, any mess-ups you get dropped. It will make players always prepared to perform

  24. allezkev says:

Carlos Vela? No thanks to that lightweight…

    Afternoon Wath, hows Camden today?

The traffic in London is appalling btw…

  25. Xr!s says:

  26. devilgunner says:

Just a short hop……….Gooner Jim we cannot make the pitch smaller. The EPL rules state the size and measurements of the pitch and they have to be the same all over the English grounds.

  27. Canadian Gooner says:

Jim – If we can’t open up these tight assed park the bus teams on the big field, I don’t see how narrowing the playing surface would help. Also, I don’t think that the old Highbury dimensions would be allowed under the current PL rules and regulations.

  28. W.A.T.H says:

Dev, they can change the pitch mate the size has to be within the agreed measurements…! that can make it more narrow but we have no width anyway so matters not how wide the pitch is we only seem to play down the middle…!

AK, Camden is same as always mate, bright sunny warm and inviting..!.

CG, your comment on “do they care” is the big one for me… I think thats why this is the summer we actually get an answer to that..!

  29. Xr!s says:

Tiki-taka football might fade off soon. Teams have learnt how to play against that style of football

  30. W.A.T.H says:

Xr!s, they leant how to play against our tika taka years ago..!
Fanzee…. Interesting to say the least.

  31. Canadian Gooner says:

W.A.T.H – I, and I’m sure most Arsenal supporters, would like to know where the fault for the transfer constipation lies. Is it Arsene being tight with what money he has been allocated? Is it becaused the BOD/owner will not allocate sufficient total funds to the manager &/or will not authorize bids sufficient to get world class players? It would be great if we knew where to direct and target our anger. I believe most, if not all, the fault lies with the owner. Yes, believe, I have no inside source or crystal ball and certainly can’t divine anything from the entrails of animals. Whether the owner has been badly advised by the BOD or has made up his own mind is immaterial. Things can NOT continue as before for the upcoming transfer window.

  32. W.A.T.H says:

Xr, we dont have players with pace which we had then.. our fastest player now can hardly dribble hence our problems arise.

CG, i think we went through a stage where the board did not want to spend but had Arsene asked 4 cash they would of found it from somewhere. I think the last 2/3 yrs has been Arsene refusing to spend thinking he can still do it all with kids… now maybe after Cesc he realises he cant…!

  33. Adam says:

Wath. I agree with your 12.56. I often wonder where his head is at and can only think that the board should have told him that his job is to win football matches by assembling a team to do just that. He identifies the very highest quality transfer targets and the board work out how to afford them. If he hadn’t assumed the role as the financial conscience of the club then things may have gone better for us all.

  34. Canadian Gooner says:

W.A.T.H. – Either way, it must change this summer or it is going to get very nasty for the owner, BOD, manager and the team. The club will suffer, both as a business and as an institution.

Anyway, it is getting late and I have a busy day ahead. So, I will bid you all a good day. Keep the faith.

  35. W.A.T.H says:

    Cheers CG sleep well mate,
Afternoon Adam…. The money is there, no one is preaching to spend what we don’t have or to spend 200 million extra and bankrupt the club. His ego has got in the way of far to many decisions that have backfired to the detriment of the team/squad. He is a very very clever man he knows and sees what we do and knows how to correct it, this summer is last chance saloon. At long last maybe his loyalty to others has been given a swift kick in the nuts and reality has reared it’s ugly head…! Last few signings indicates he has had a change of approach for sure.

  36. Adam says:

Hi Wath. To think that I never used to be cynical but, I will believe it when I see it. If I were him I would hire me as a PR consultant too so I could prevent him from saying thinks like he knew that selling RVP to MU would give them the title. That is a real kick in the nuts for Gooners I think.

  37. W.A.T.H says:

1 thing he has done well the last few yrs Adam is speak with forked tongue and come out with far to many ridiculous statements, as they always say actions speak louder than words, buy the players we need shut up talking about other teams or players and worry about us simple as that..!

  38. Lee says:

Yeah it’s not like the team needs his 100% focus at the moment….he’s got loads of time on his hands to talk about other teams etc! Couldn’t make it up, could you?

  39. N says:

On paper.it looks like an Arsenal win. Don’t be fooled. Harry knows how the gunners play.Don’t be surprised he derails the gunners cl bid.
I hope Wenger watched how BM tore the Barca defence to shreds with slick passing and speed,Wenegr likes to play the barcelona way .All it needs is the other team with quick counter attack
    to beat this style.
As I,ve said, dont,be surprised Harry trips the gunners. It’s up to Wenger.

  40. allezkev says:

    Phew, it’s a scorcher today.

Lucky for me, that I have my usual bottle of Um Bongo… 😉

  41. W.A.T.H says:

I’m just happy to have my feet up with a nice bottle of vino Ak… Least someone keeping the economy going, nice one mate.

If he can get Qpr up for it N then yes would not surprise me if they nick a point off us BUT do most of those Qpr players even give a shit…? I think not…!

Lee, you watching the world go by from across the rd in the pub..?

  42. Lee says:

I managed to sneak out for two pints of Peroni at 11 bells and been back at the coal face all afternoon!
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  43. allezkev says:

    Peroni…….. 🙁

What i’d give for a pint of that.

Btw, Benik Afobe, he swears by Um Bongo. 😉

  44. allezkev says:

Yes Wath, I am putting in the milage mate.

So glad to be appreciated by your good self…

Mind the snakes, Camden is full of them. 🙂

  45. Adam says:

Mi luv di Um Bongo am di Wenger man fur di champeenshipe he need atak di defend. No di 442 ma di 128 am di fing fur di wenger man an di Um Bonogo. Ya brudder.

  46. W.A.T.H says:

Adam, The men in white coats r on their way mate I have made the call………..

AK all the snakes are round by the tube station mate,,, the sharks are there too in Black Cabs 😉

  47. agirlagunner says:

rico, enjoy your day out! Hello, Shopping Buddy. Hi GG Man and Lee. What is Um Bongo? Why are you talking rasta, Adam?

  48. allezkev says:

Afternoon Adam… Camp did you say?
    Can’t say that I really noticed…
Mind you I did like the skirt you was wearing at the Reading game…
    Versace was it? 😛

  49. Adam says:

Agag. That isn’t Rasta, it’s Um Bongo.

Kev. That skirt I was sporting was a Dirk Bikkenberg, not Versace. 🙂 I only got away with it because of some subtle foundation garmentry.

  50. allezkev says:

Loic Remy, is he really gonna be the striking option for us this summer???

Cavani, Falcao, Lewandoski, are all too expensive for Ebeneezer Kroenke to sanction…
But maybe Wenger can work on Remy, improve him and turn him into a £25m striker?

Jovetic and Remy wouldn’t break the bank and would leave some dough for strengthening in other positions…

  51. Adam says:

As Lee said, in an epic and oft quoted post. Cavani? We’ve got more chance of signing Reg Varney!
Still makes me chuckle as it is so bloody true. 🙂

  52. Adam says:

Lee. We all have our own “look”. Tight red jeans happens to be mine. Agag understands. 🙂

  53. W.A.T.H says:

I’m off for a few hours you lot try and behave and lets not make Liberace turn in his grave Adam…!

  54. Micko says:

    Nothing wrong with drain-pipes kev.
Laters wath, don’t forget to put the chickens out for rico.

  55. martin wengrow says:

Wenger wont sign Remy. If he fancied him he would have picked him up in January.

  56. W.A.T.H says:

Maybe you smell of the seaside and everyone has run off…! cockles, welks etc etc….

AK will be drooling… good job I didn’t mention jellied eels…!

  57. allezkev says:

Jellied eels, ugh…!!! Not for me Wath.

Always fish and chips, down near The Kersal (or what’s left of it…

Candy floss and some fresh mini doughnuts, lovely jubly. 😀

A game of crazy golf and a walk down the pier.
    Gawd bless ya guv’nor… 😉

  58. Lee says:

Fucking hell cant get the youtube clip of us winning the league at shitehart lane………. 🙁

  59. Lee says:

Fred, I couldn’t post the clip of game…… these fucking computer things won’t catch on!
