Morning all.
It’s a Bank Holiday here in England, the sun is shining so enjoy it whatever you’re up to. For everyone else, don’t work too hard. Lol
Yesterday, history was created by Ben Stokes, Jack Leach and England as they chased down what looked to be a winning scoreline set by the old enemy Australia. The series so far hasn’t produced the best cricket the world has ever seen with batting disasters, missed run outs, dropped catches and other quite entertaining cockups depending on who you support. There’s been a few quite special spells of bowling too with Jofra Archer standing out from the rest purely because this is his first Ashes test series. Smith had by far been the best batsmen until yesterday. All I’ll say is take a bow Ben Stokes. Jack Leach too for staying with him.
Isn’t this exactly why we all love sport? The excitement, grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat, springing a surprise or causing an upset. There’s been many during my lifetime and I’m sure there’ll be plenty more too before over the years to come.
In cricket this particular test will go down in history but the series is still alive as with two tests to go, its honours even.
1981 will never be forgotten. The year Ian Botham and Bob Willis turned an Ashes series on its head but let’s not forget Graham Dilley’s part either. The 1999 World Cup semi final when Australia looked beaten but a successful run out during the last over saw them through to the final.
Barcelona v PSG was a cracker. Trailing 4-0 from the first leg in their Champions League tie, they turned it around in style. The victory wasn’t a surprise really but three goals from 88 minutes onwards was. Incredible really.
Mark Selby was trailing John Higgins 10-4 on one Sunday evening at the Crucible in a World Championship Final. He looked down and out before a remarkable turnaround saw him overcome Higgins 18-15 in what’s considered to be one of the best comebacks in snooker. Mind you, Dennis Taylor might disagree after his stunning comeback against Steve Davis in 1985 having been 8-0 down after the first session.
Liverpool in Istanbul against AC Milan 2005, Sevilla against Liverpool in 2016, both finals in the Champions League and Europa respectively.
Medinha 2012, The Ryder Cup. A great weekend for Europe as was the turnaround in the Solheim Cup 2000. I’ll never forget that one as Europe were looking beaten until the heavens opened and play was suspended. They returned with a different mindset and battled hard to win with Alison Nicholas using a wood to chip in from off the green on the final hole to earn a half in her match with Sherri Steinha.
I can barely bring myself to mention the 1999 Champions League Final but love of loathe Man Utd, their victory was something else.
Our 2014 comeback and subsequent victory over the mighty Hull City will forever be etched in history too…..
Here’s a tennis one which no doubt went by unnoticed by many. Britain’s Tara Moore, world No 479, was heading for a 6-0 6-0 humiliating thrashing by the French third seed Jessika Ponchet at the ITF World Tour event in Sunderland. 5-0 down in the second set and 30-40 down. No way I hear you mutter but she did.
There are many many more in my mind, especially in tennis as it’s a sport I’ve always loved watched hours and hours of during my life. The late 70’s through to the mid 90’s being my favourite period of time. The John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova years as they battled not only their rivals but the public and media too. Nastase, Connors, Chris Evert, BJK along with many others who moved the game to another level. 1982 was the best year though as I sat on centre court and watched three great finals take place.
But HH is a football website so there’s only one place to end this article and that’s Anfield. 1989, on a day, or rather evening, when no-one gave us a chance. It was up for grabs, and Michael Thomas grabbed it….
As 10cc one belted out, I don’t like cricket, I love it….
So what’s your favourite sporting moment or greatest comeback you’ve seen? Apart from Headingley 2019…
Morning all.
Hats off to your lads.
For all the stirring i did on yesterday’s post, it truly was in jest as the effort was ridiculously good!!!
Anfield ‘89 must be at or at least near the top of the list for any Arsenal fan.
It seemed as unlikely as your boys winning yesterday but that’s what sport is all about!!
There’s been so many massive results against the odds in all sports and it’s part of the charm.
Even us v Reading in that cup tie that ended 7-5.
We were red hot favourites before the game but then we were out on our feet.
Things change so much even during the course of a 90 minute match, let alone a 5 day test or 9 month season.
The 7-5 at Reading was dreadful yet great and made better as I was there with my Reading supporting family..
Half time the teasing texts came my way but I didn’t bite. Another case of she who laughs last……
Morning all and thanks Rico………………..and Scott ! hahaha
I love the banter from you, Scott, but I do take offense at the “English” players such as Archer and Stokes !……..how far do we go back to who is a citizen ?………………other than the Aboriginals ( hope thats correct ) all you Aussies are from another country !…………..where are your roots out of curiosity ?……………………………………I lied at the beginning……………I didn`t take offense !…………………keep it up mate ! 🙂
Winning the title at Anfield may not have been a comeback , but it`s up there as no one expected us to do it…………..especially Steve One Minute McMahon !
Oh LC, I thought you of all people would cop the banter hahahah
I’m a bitza.
English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, German, Danish and Norwegian, so it goes.
Didn’t they have television back in the day lol
Wife and son (obviously) have aboriginal blood back a few generations that we only found about a few years ago.
Rico, I’ll bet that was a hell of a night for you lol
I remember driving to work and someone ringing to tell me we’d won-we we’re down by 2 with a few minutes to go when I left.
I called them a lying bastard then nearly drove off the road!!!
The best game of anything I ever saw was Australia v NZ in the Union.
Kiwis nailed us 42-39, or something close to that.
Big Jonah Lomu scores on the bell to win the game.
It had everything and for pure quality of play, it’s the best.
It was like two all time great fighters going toe to toe for 12 rounds.
So many memories through sport, and yesterday was another one!!!!
On a serious note from your comment Lc, I think all of us here can take/give a bit of banter but when it gets personal and/or insulting, it crosses the line. That’s certainly when I get pissed off.
It was certainly enjoyable at the end Scott but in the first half, we were awful and Reading capitalised on us being so disorganised at the back.
Even Chamakh scored that night…
Rico, I copped my share of insults though lol
As for teenagers my missus will confirm I still have the brain of a 5 year old ! 😆
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so they say………………………………you speak our languge, copy our names !……Smith etc !…………and you drive on the right side of the road !………………………fcuking English wannabees ! ………………..or good luck with becoming the Capatain of Norways cricket team ! hahahaha
Laterz !
I understand Rico. I can only speak for myself when I say I am almost un-piss offerble or un-insultable…either will do ! hahahaha
One of my faults according to my wife is I dont take anything serious and joke about anything at any opportunity, but what does she expect from the brain of a 5 year old !
It’s never personal though Scott and actually, seldom insulting either unless in retaliation.
A load of lol’s or haha’s don’t make amends for insulting the England fans.
I can see why your wife would say that Lc. How is she now by the way?
Rico, people take things how they choose to.
LC, Norway have a damn fine starting 11 🙂
Morning all, was hoping for a run today (lost 2 stone since February doing 22 5k Park Runs) but its just too hot!
Favorite moments in Sport were 2 very close Ryder Cups, (although I like America, beating the smug yanks at Golf does more for me than beating cheating Aussies!), MIchael Thomas and Alan Sunderland matches of course, and most recently winning the Cricket World Cup as it was a first time at 50 overs. Staying up to see Alex Higgins winning the snooker, and a distant memory as a 9 year old of beating Germany were also highlights!
If I look at World events, only watching in amazement as the Two Towers came down sticks as vividly. Funny (and perhaps good), how sport can do that, especially as we only spectators not actually playing!
Although thinking about it, had yesterdays finish been a final deciding test, I think it would be in top 3!
If we go on and lose series, although magnificent, I think it cant quite match a few others. Lets hope its a turning point, as Broad said in interview yesterday, we haven’t actually played very well yet.
Cocker. Probably why I like you so much. We have similar traits. My wife also says I’m a kid at heart. I’m always taking the rise and receiving it, I can beat you in something……she says I act like a four year old hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
The best medicine known to man ……Laughter….. mind you as my wife constantly reminds me, I sail close to the wind on several occasions, not being a hunk myself, but been lucky, only having my nose broken once is a result i suppose.
Scott. I love your comments and have to say you have taken yesterdays loss very well. Not sure I could have smiled had Smith and Warner done the same to us. I hate the pair of them.
It has to be said, no matter who you support, you have to take your hat off to the Aussies yesterday at the end of the match. Man for man they walked up to Ben Stokes and shook his hand, even some were giving man hugs in the middle of the pitch. Can’t say I’ve EVER witnessed that from an Australian to an Englishman.
I have several favourite moments in sport. Having been a sportsman all my life, I like most sports, especially supporting England and of course The Arsenal, but only played football with any success.
My stand out moment must be that night at Anfield. No one gave us a chance, having to beat Liverpool at their patch by two clear goals.
I watched the game at home. When the final whistle sounded I went absolutely berserk, screaming and shouting. So much so that my next door neighbour thought we were being burgled and almost phoned the police, until he realised what was happening.
Not to rub salt in your wounds Scott, but the Johnnie Wilinson drop goal also brought some celebrations to my abode.
As long as things don’t get personal and out of hand theres nothing wrong with friendly banter. Its what I enjoy, being down my local with my Gooner Son and having a few beers supporting our team.
COYG
She`s doing ok, Rico, good days and bad days , it takes it`s time as it was only last November she had the transplant, thanks for asking .
As for the cricket, I would have taken a draw at Bindippers and willingly lost that test match, although extremely exciting nothing takes precedence over Arsenal in sporting terms with Arsenal Women beating Spuds 6-0 an example ……………………beating the Spuds always takes top spot in my world same as losing against them hits me the hardest………..it takes a long time to get over !
Nice one Andrew and keep going but not in this heat.
I know what you mean about beating the smug Americans in the Ryder Cup, its the same in 5be Solheim Cup. I recall Patti Hurst and her bad sportsmanship when she let Sorenstam putt first only to call foul afterwards.
I was watching the news when the second plane went into the second tower. It was like watching something from a movie yet it was real. Horrific really.
I think part of the Aussies newly-found good behavior is a result of team-meeting-orders as they were rocked by their own country turning against them. Or maybe it was a wake-up call, and they had time to reflect that things had gone too far. Probably a bit of both, but the gracious loss reminded me of many sporting golf moments where gentlemanly conduct still (mostly) prevails.
I agree re the way we’ve played and I thought Broad was very mature in what he said. I reckon his bowling might just step up a notch.
Is Jimmy expected back any time soon? I think he’s playing for Lancs at the moment.
Great comment Vics …………………………especially about me ! hahahaha
Have to go down the gym now and for all the moaning I got for being down the gym too much from family, according to the cardio speciallists it was the best thing I was doing !
150 mins cardio per week with a 15 min warm up and a 10 min warm down each session and mixed with 2-4 days of weight training is best for the heart and everything else……………………..ok thats enough preaching ! 🙂
Ps…………………………. stop the saurated fat and trans fats, sugar and salt !
Pps…………………………..and anyone over 40……..have a cholestral test and check your blood pressure, its the silent killer ! 💓💓💓
rico, Broad pointing out that the other 10 players owe it to themselves and Stokes to step up, after being given a chance they didn’t expect or perhaps deserve. While Root told the party line that they always believed until last man standing, Broad was totally honest and admitted he didn’t think we had a cat in hells chance when 9th wicket went down. Top bloke 🙂 ….but crap batting recently! I’d move Leach up the order swapping places, but in cricket, its seems a loyalty to established players remains far too long as if batting order is a fixed right.
Rub away, VCC lol
I give, I receive 🙂
It’s just a game.
It’s to be enjoyed, I reckon.
Andrew, I’m not sure if people realise exactly how pissed off we were with our 3 last year.
Generally speaking, Aussies detest cheats and that’s exactly what holds Football back in this country.
Things had to change in our cricket squad, and they have.
Le Coq, – Pps………..and anyone over 40……..have a cholestral test and check your blood pressure, its the silent killer !
Turn of year after changing Doctors, was told Bad Cholestral far too high, Obese (I knew that from Wii Fit ranking years ago!), and high blood pressure. That’s when she suggested C25k (Couch to 5k) NHS App for beginner runners. I said no chance, I have 2 knees with degenerative arthritis as a result of 40 years competitive Table-Tennis.
Ignored for a few weeks then started to think about her quote that if was able to jog regularly, I would have FORTY per cent less chance of a heart attack or stroke.
Along with my wife, new Hip 2 years ago and worse knees than me, we started the NHS App, 1 minute jogging round local park, 3 minutes walking, repeat 6 times! Bloody killed us after 30 minutes. Week 3, run for 5 mimutes non-stop, now being stupid I thought. Anyway, after 12 weeks program, 3 times a week we now run 5k regularly including Saturday’s 9.00AM Southend Parkrun alongside 400-500 other runners. Some blind being guided by a helper, some recovering on Chemo, others who have found running helps mental health problems. It was a complete eye-opener and now the most important part of our week. The encouragement from Marshals on every corner, clapping, the true real athletic runners who come back and cheer those finishing half an hour later!
So agree Coq, so easy to slip, put on weight, bad habits …. but if anyone had told me running could be enjoyable, and I would be able to do it, I would have thought them mad. To see 18 stone people trundle round the course each week as well is truly inspirational. Every week I’ve lost a pound, it has been a little easier, and Saturday in heat actually got a new PB of 28 and a half minutes.
Not giving up Beer, Wine or Salt though …. just reducing, haha.
Scott, meant to ask you, my hometown club signed the Aussie captain in July and immediately made him Southend United skipper before playing a game! Unfortunately we have now lost our first 5 League 1 games, pointless and bottom except for Bury & Bolton who had 12 points deducted. Any views on Mark Milligan?
Andrew, last year I decided to make a football comeback at 48.
I had an underlying back issue that ended up putting me off work for 3 months, but I got the spine sorted and this year, I’m playing again.
I did a hammy so missed a few weeks during the season but we’ve made the semi finals this week and I’m still rubbish, but loving it!!!
It truly does get a little easier each week.
Andrew, he’s workhorse who always gives 100%.
Seems to be a top man and has been a damn decent player-a true professional.
Is he going ok???
Are they using him as a CB or DM?
Scott, it wasnt just the cheating, Aussie cricketers had pushed sledging and how hard they played a bit too far in my opinion. Did any Australians react to that before the big crash?
It was simmering, Andrew.
People were starting to realise what was happening, but it didn’t just happen all at once, it was a slow build up over several years.
Probably really started with Ponting, possibly increased under Clarke.
I would r say it got worse under Smith but this episode really brought it to a head as when things like that happen, it’s pretty obvious massive changes are required.
I know most disagree and that’s fine but it’s my belief Smith is a decent man who undoubtedly made a stupid decision which he will regret for the rest of life where as Warner has NEVER taken responsibility, even though it was his idea entirely and that’s straight from the mouth of Bancroft.
Warner is poison and I wish he were never allowed to Represent us again.
Smith reacted very, very poorly when under pressure and showed a distinct lack of leadership.
Midfielder Scott. Problem is we appointed John Bond as a caretaker manager last year (after sacking Chris Powell) and we were saved with a last game win over Sunderland. But he’d been out the game for nearly 8 years, and was most known as a number 2 to Harry Redknapp. The team as a whole not jelling. I only watch SU a few times a season as Arsenal is my first love, but reports so far from friends at 2 home matches are he’s doing ok but major changes needed. How many defeats can a Manager lose at start of season, 7, 8?
I think local lad Steve Tilson, ex-player, ex-Southend Manager, ex-Table Tennis teammate of mine! will be considered soon.
Milligan will give his all no matter what, mate.
And I agree with Broad Andrew, our batting has been woeful.
Leach up a couple of places and Roy down to 6,7 or 8 imo.
Never knew it was proved entirely Warner, that makes more sense as Smith comes over as a reasonable chap and can’t help but feel a bit of admiration for the way he wanted to be straight back out facing Archer! His fidgets and style though, amazing for such a top player. I thought he was practicing Fencing shots last test, and that followed defensive prods!
Another strange thing was Leach (lovely chap, played local league cricket week after being dropped by England scoring 90) saying last night how he was put off that Stokes couldn’t watch him playing final deliveries!
Morning Rico, all,
football it’s got to be Anfield 89, what a night. You are more charitable than me Rico, I couldn’t care less about 1999 or Istanbul 2005.
All sport it has to be Headingley 81,although yesterday runs it close. One of the great things about yesterday is it was live on TV, it would have been even better if it was on free to air TV. I distinctly remember hearing the result in the school field, aged 15.In those days Sunday was a rest day in Test Matches. Unbelievable now.
Bizarrely, Wimbledon tennis play 6 days, then have a rest day on the Sunday. I’d be interested in your opinion on that Rico, as a tennis fan. I know tradition is important to tennis fans, but I remember in the early 1980s,the women’s final was played on Friday, the men’s final on the Saturday, that was changed, so things do change, even at Wimbledon. Also equal prize money for Men and Women is even more recent.
Newcastle winning yesterday was so unexpected but Fantastic, howay the lads!
How did Harry Kane get away without a yellow card for diving?
Andrew, Bancroft confirmed it-he threw Warner right under the bus and it’s what most expected had happened.
It doesn’t detract from Smith’s guilt, but certainly the part he played, imo but again, he will carry that.
I reckon Warner only went to England because we didn’t have an opener in decent form.
I doubt anyone knows how the hell Smith can even hit a ball with his technique lol
His eye must be incredible.
10:53 Andrew, brilliant. Pat on the back to you and your wife, seriously….
Ponting lost the plot imo when he accused England of cheating just after a sub fielder caught him out..
One I really liked and admired is Brett Lee. I have the photo of him and Freddie up in my home. A great bowler and superb sportsman from what I can make out.
Rico, Brett Lee always played with a smile on his face, and played hard but fair.
Loved him and your Flintoff, same thing.
No rubbish with them.
Steve Waugh played the game as hard as any man, but I’d put a years wages on the fact the little grub Warner would not have raised ball tampering with him!!!
Waugh would’ve had him out of the squad immediately and yes, that’s an indictment on Smith’s leadership.
Ponting was the boy wonder, destined for captaincy when he was 20 years old and that pressure told on him.
Clarke suffered the same way to an extent.
Thanks rico. However hard last lap of Parkrun is, there’s the thought that we share a bottle of Prosecco Saturday night to reward ourselves :). Also know it may end anytime when knees get too bad, but certainly enjoying while we can. Just a shame didn’t do it twenty years ago, but better late than never. Seeing some in Seventies and Eighties running gives hope!
Sometimes I’m critical of NHS, like I expect a lot of us are, but the cancer treatment my wife got five years ago, and the push to get out there and do something about bad level warning signs has been great and a life changer.
I liked both the Waugh brother Scott. Really good cricketers I thought. Kim Hughes was an odd ball though. 😆
Raise a glass from me Andrew.
The NHS get a lot wrong imo but through no fault of their own I think because of the well publicised lack of funding etc but in an emergency or serious injury, diagnosis etc, they are to beat I think.
Rico, Mark lives a few minutes from me and is married to a racehorse trainer.
He and David Gower are my two favourites batsmen of all time.
My favourite sight in cricket was Waugh coming down the track to a spinner.
Just easy on the eye, as was Gower.
Kim Hughes-he never handled the captaincy at all but damn, it was a tough time to be Aussie skipper.
Out of interest, anyone watch the Hussain series of 5 interviews with Pieterson? Can’t say I really warmed to Kevin which happens after most documentaries, he’s always been devisive, not a team player, but great talent. Maybe we should have put up with such an individual, a team can’t all love each other? Or maybe right to put team and Strauss first?
What appalled me was recalling Piers Morgan’s tweets about Cook being such a creep. I probably agree with Piers on as many things as not, although he’s sensationalist, certainly that AW stayed too long, but he made disgusting remarks to Alistair Cook who is a class and who kept a dignified silence.
I was never a huge fan of Gower Scott, I always thought he was a bit up himself and smug. Thorpe was one of my favs and the two Hollioake brothers. Yes I know they were born in Oz.
Randall my all time favourite fielder I think. Actually, there are so many…
Andrew, the best thing I saw of Morgan was when he faced Brett Lee in the nets 🙂
He put on a brave face but he’d have been sore for days lol
Cook always appears a classy guy.
Jacques Kallis is another.
What a player!!!!!
Richard Hadlee and Martin Crowe from NZ.
The list goes on….
Watched many a great Mark Waugh innings in his two year stint at Essex. He replaced Alan Border as overseas player, and nearly led to another championship. Only a 25 point reduction for a poor pitch robbed us!
Come to think of it, had a few good Australians, not everyone’s cup of tea, but Stewart Law also looked great at times. Liked a drink though, I believe 🙂
Andrew, Law was just about the best batsman in the world at one stage.
He had an incredible run of form and had a pretty good career in general.
David Boon, 48 beers on the flight over is still the record, I believe 🙂
#Stuart Law. In fact could not understand how he only had one test cap
We agreeing too much Scott. Maybe we should get back to you never seeing Koscielny turning his back, but always seeing Sanchez dive! 🙂 🙂
He was in an era of greats, Andrew.
Even at his very best, he couldn’t really crack it but in any other era, he’d have been a regular.
Mike Hussey, who was a brilliant batsmen, never cracked it until his late 20’s.
Have you read KPs book Andrew? If what he’s written is true, he was treated dreadfully. I liked him as a player. 😜
Hahahaha
Just leave Rambo alone lol
Mike ‘the glove’ Hussey Scott. 😂
Rico, I saw a pretty I’m depth interview with KP a few months back and I’d have to agree.
His confidence/cockiness turned plenty off but bloody hell, couldn’t he play!!!
He touched on how he was ostracised.
Even he laughed at THAT blonde streak he had at one stage!!!
His face didn’t fit Scott, imo anyway.
I might start a cricket blog you know.. lol
No rico, but KP made my holiday, first time ever went to Balearic Islands. I remember late breakfast in a bar, about mid-day, then back to apartments which had a tv out in front of the pool. Was it his first hundred? Anyway, his innings clinched the Ashes. I remember everyone out cheeering and raising toasts! Forgot that in my great sporting moments, lol.
Rico, KP made that point to Hussain about how he was treated. Hussain retorted, Kevin, with arguments with x, y, z …… etc, don’t you think it might actually have been you that was in the wrong? He laughed and I think said, maybe, who knows! But Piers summed it up well, no winners, England and KP all lost out. He invented way many play short-form cricket now.
Randall eh rico! Brings back memories of those charming Sunday afternoons, watching John Player league!
Great stuff Andrew, keep it up mate.
The best bit of gear I`ve bought recently was a Garmin 245 music and well worth the £280 I paid as it has so many features but the one I like is the one which shows heart rate from warm up to easy to aerobic to threshold to maximum and is colour coded, it sounds simple but in any exercise it will tell you which zone you are in and if going to high in execise you only have to slow down to recover and build up again.
Sometimes you can be running and feel good but yourheartrate could be high and you wouldn`t know it with out a monitor.
The watch also displays stress levels, energy levels left and so much more and as the watch indicates, holds 500 songs on it so you can listen through wireless head phones / earphones without the need of a phone.
Off to paint the last bit of the house and annexe…………that should get my heart rate up and stress levels !
🙂
It’s an interesting read Andrew, Swan and Prior weren’t particularly pleasant apparently. Strauss is just another who thinks he’s superior to others imo.
A cricket blog-why not 🙂
Diversify and I’ll haunt you there as well ha ha.
The world is buzzing over that test match, and it’s just great!!
I guess Nasser couldn’t be seen to agree with KP Andrew otherwise Sky Sports might push him out. I guess we’ll never know the truth but England was a far better team with him in it..
LC, are you sure you want a watch that shows stress levels, being an Arsenal fan and all 🙂
Similar time to Jonty Rhodes I think Andrew or maybe a bit before. Two superb fielders.
I followed Somerset as Berkshire were and still are rubbish. Loved the Big Joel, Sir Viv and IT days.
I know Randall was Notts though. Lol
Rico, it’s Somerset or Essex for the title this year, 2 teams that can’t compete financially with the Test ground counties. What’s odd is that Somerset yesterday signed Vijay for the last three county matches including against Essex. Last year he played the final three for Essex!
Money … will travel I guess. We have lost Siddle unfortunately, not known yet if we are to sign anyone for last three.
Andrew. I don’t follow county cricket as much as used to or would like to. Too many other things to do these days…
Le Coq, I keep recommending Garmins to other new runners. It’s partly the tech and stats that I’ve found make running fun. I have a walking Garmin GPS, but use Apple Watch for running, similar masses of stats but I’ve had to turn Heartrate off! Apparently hard exercise should not be above 220 minus your age so I shouldn’t be above 159.
But stats after Parkrun Saturday showed I averaged 170 and last 1k was at 181! It was hot, and being competitive I followed a friend of a friend round last lap and didn’t want him to escape me. He did at end with a sprint, but it forced 10 seconds off my best time. Think I might relax now though, not feel sick at end, and follow heartrate 🙂 At least till winter. We started training and going out in 4 or 6 degrees, soon warmed up. Summer is nowhere near as easy.
Do you have a Strava account so we can follow each other’s efforts?
Greatest sports moment for me was a week in 1971. Monday night beating Spurs at the Lane to take the League Title and then Saturday afternoon at Wembley beating Liverpool to take the F A Cup and complete the double. As Max Boyce used to say “I was there” ……on both occasions.
Afternoon Rico and the House.
Its boiling down here and not the day to go running.
With it being a B/H i thought it would be rather quiet on here,
how wrong I was.
Memory not as good now but todays post has got me thinking.
(Great Post Rico by the way)
I have supported ECC as long as I have been a Gooner and spent many
happy hours in the Pav watching them play.
Andrew I loved watching Mark Waugh and Alan Border bat but was not
a big fan of Law.
Talking of Randall and the John Player, were you there the last game of the season,
when we beat Notts to win it. He played a Stokes type of innings but was on losing side
He joined us in the bar after the game and with Easty was laugh a minute .Agreat guy
Great two to be at Cicero.
I was there at Emirates Stadium…….best moment……. mmmmm …… Muse concert!
Don’t think I was actually there Rick, was working too much those days. Are you still a member?I let mine lapse a few years back when couldn’t get to so many games, and it’s not so much fun now in non-members area. Tom Pearce upper or the smaller one next door was my haunt for years. A few I know stopped membership when Southend and Ilford outgrounds were taken away from the roster. I remember seeing them at Chalkwell Park, Southchurch Park and more recently Garons. Keith Boyce, Ken McEwan, two great early overseas players in addition to the Aussies quoted above.
Afternoon Rick, thanks.
It’s quite nice to steer away from moaning about Arsenal. At least that’s what I thought when I wrote the post. Just a fun and lighthearted day. 😀
As for sports greatest moment I would have trouble saying witch is best,
The first year I watched us at Highbury we won the league, then 1971 double,
the league winner Thomas,5-0 at the lane (Chippys Goal)
But saying this its a tossup between my very first visit to highbury (on the North Bank and with my brother) and 1979.
In may that year I was at Wembly to watch Sunderland score the winner against Utd.
Then in June Was at Lords to watch Essex win their first ever trophy.
Gooch 123 Mcewan 79 destroyed Surrey and later on we won the County Champioship
for the first.
What a great year
You certainly hit the Jackpot today Rico.
No Andrew like you I let my membership laspe a few years ago.
With my brother I sat in the Tom Pearce upper stand
but when he passed away I found it hard to go by myself.
Seems so Rick. I love reading old stories. Being so young myself of course. Lol
Remembering cricket and Essex I can’t help thinking of Trevor “Stonewall” Bailey. The way he protected one end was really great. He was a good all rounder as well. Shows my age.
Afternoon rico, Shite Hart Lane 1987, 2 nil down at half time in the league Cup semi-final and the stadium announcer decides there’s no better time to let the home fans know how they can get their tickets for the final…….priceless, will never forget it.
Not overly fussed about the cricket, always prefered the 80’s meself, streakers guaranteed and some proper bouncers to boot lol.
Sorry late getting back to you Andrew, no I dont have a strava account and have no idea what it is……………….so maybe I do ? ……………….if it involves a smart phone then I dont . 😆
Read the Apple watch is the dogs doodahs, but even though my Garmin was £280 it`s about middle of the road price wise and does what I want from such a watch. I will have to get someone to sort the music downloading for me though as I haven`t a clue !
Went on youtube to find someone to explain how to get the stuff I wanted as it`s a complicated bugger for someone tech inept as me. 🙂
Morning all.
We’re any of our Housers at Ali v Cooper at Highbury?
Fascinating how many did the WHL / Wembley double. I was on the shelf for the first one and directly in line with Heighway screaming at Wilson to cover his post . 1971 was a great relief in many ways if only to stop the incessant noise coming from the neighbours.
Ten years,it only took us 10 years,
NoScott I saw the first one it was a long minute almost as long as McMahon’s must have seemed but the second was not ever going to be worth it as we all knew Cooper would cut up . Still Cassius made Cooper’s retirement a lot more comfortable.
New post up now
