The perfect replacement for Arsene Wenger….? Walcott set for summer exit.?

Morning all.

Arsene Wenger will begin the new season with just twelve months left on his contract. Over in Holland, Frank de Boer will be doing the same at Ajax. His agent is already suggesting the Dutchman is keen on a move to Spain or England but nothing has been set in stone.

See where I’m going?

Could Frank de Boer be Arsene’s successor and if he is, would Arsenal fans be pretty happy?

I think I would be, after all, Ajax is a super club which endeavours to play football the right way and has a history of doing so, a bit like Arsenal used to. Frank de Boer has been at Ajax for the last six years and perhaps his biggest blip was believing Yaya Sanogo would be ideal for his striking unit, unlike his brother of course who made it quite clear what he thought of our Frenchman having been quoted as saying Sanogo has ‘no useful qualities’ which to be honest, is probably not far from the truth…..

There’s a really interesting article on Outside Of The Boot which details de Boer’s approach to football and his tactics. The words ‘tactically flexible’ made me smile.

The Dutchman has won many things during his time, both as a player and manager and despite the Dutch league being a bit like so many other European leagues where only two or three teams truly compete for the title, he’s managed to win it a few times during his six year reign. Not this season though as Ajax lost out to PSV by two points on the final day of the season when in Arsenal fashion, they could only manage a draw against De Graafschap, a team second from bottom, a match they needed to win the league.

So in essence, Frank de Boer is the ideal replacement for Arsene Wenger, and if he brings his coaching staff, especially Dennis Bergkamp (happy birthday Dennis) with him, happy days I say…..

Is there a better option out there?

Transfer gossip:

Theo Walcott hits the headlines today as West Ham are reported to interested in signing him this summer. £20 million is the price made up by the media and I suppose that’s around the right figure for an English International striker/winger.

I certainly wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him end up at the Olympic Stadium next season….

de Boer is a nice thought however I don’t know enough about him in terms of personality; don’t know many of the others either. However I think we need to bring in some discipline, less Brylcreem and selfies and more grit…bring back George! A manager who would welcome some tough guys in the squad, Coq and Flam are our hard men lol. As to Walcott please go £20m yes and take some with you….Olivier, Per, Gibbs, for starters…..we are in need of a major reboot as the programme is stuck in a loop…we’re going to buy, oh no we’re not; this is our season, oh no it’s not, top four is a trophy, oh no it’s not, we have mental strength, oh no we don’t.etc etc etc zzzzzzzz

    Good read Rico.

De Boer is a good manager but imho not Arsenal quality or an improvement on AW.soft belly comes to mind

He can’t even beat Philip Cocu at PSV even though he has a bigger budget…; CoCu’s style of play is a bit more Fergie or Huddink than Cruyff (R.I.P) or AW’s,

  3. tsgh says:

    You are probably right Rico.

From transfermarket website Ajax had a smaller net spend but it could be because PSV got more money coming in for players like Depay and Georginio..

  4. Herb's Army says:

    Hi Rico.

I say get behind the team and support them passionately against Villa on Sunday, but once the final whistle goes, every Arsenal fan who wants to see the club progress and move forward must let Arsenal’s hierarchy know that the current malaise is unacceptable.
Make them squirm so that they feel visibly uncomfortable.
We are The Arsenal, not a plucky Bournemouth or Watford, just happy making the numbers up.
The club need a big bolt of lightening to wake them up.
Dare them to prove us wrong and excite us like they did before the Emirates move.

    Morning/Afternoon All…

Hiya Rico, good post, surprised that it hasn’t drawn more interest and comment…

Good points about the club Ginge and the general feeling of stagnation around the place…
    How would Kroenke know anyway???
    He’s never here, the twat…

  6. allezkev says:

Ginge, I find myself agreeing with you over de Boer, which in itself is quite worrying ?
To me Koeman would be the better choice, (and we’ve gotta try and put any romantic feelings iced Dennis Bergkamp to one side when thinking about de Boer), or Bilic…

Interesting U21 game at the Emirates this evening. I’m tempted to go but all the palava connected to getting tickets and being tied to going, whatever my circumstances later today, have meant I won’t bother… ?

I sometimes wonder if the Box Office run their affairs chiefly for their own convenience rather than for the fans’ benefit

  7. rico says:

Hi Herb, totally agree re getting behind the team at the weekend from start to finish, no protests until afterwards, if any…

Afternoon Kev, very quiet old day..

To be honest, I haven’t a clue who would sort this club out and take it forward, all who I thought about are now elsewhere…

  8. Herb's Army says:

    Hi Kev

Interesting about Leslie Knighton, I judged him purely on Arsenal’s league positions, though I guess this was at a time when Arsenal were still very much acclimatising to their new location as well as their top-tier status.
On reflection, he didn’t get us relegated, and left the club reasonably healthy and stable, ready to move on to the next level.
Although Chapman’s record at Huddersfield Town leads me to believe that he could have transformed any club he managed, thankfully it was Arsenal.

  9. rico says:

Bayern Munich have signed Benfica midfielder Renato Sanches and Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels.

Who says you need to wait for a transfer window to open….

  10. Herb's Army says:

    Hahaha Rico 😀

Wasn’t our resident spin-doctor Ivan Gazidis comparing us with Bayern Munich, not too long ago?
The philosophies that drive the two clubs are polar opposites.

    Afternoon Rico and the House.
After heavy rain it is now a muggy day down south.
It was my birthday last Wed family ganged up on me and we all went away for a few days . Watched the game late last and now catching up on every thing.

Your posts for the time I was away were all good reading Rico.
Pleased to see that Nketiah did finish as league top scorer and surprised that he did not make the England U17 team.
Kev tonights U21 game is being shown live on the Arsenal. com player.
Isaac Hayden is a guest in the studio commenting on the game it will be interesting to hear what he has to say about his future.
I have no idea if its true but i have been told that Santi Coq and Chambers are all playing tonight.

    News about Jan Toral’s hattrick.
He won Birminghams Goal of the season
players player of the season and fans player of the season.
When asked can we have him again next season the Manager stated no
he is Arsenals plans for next season ( cat out of the bag??)
    See you latta.

  12. bradster says:

    Afternoon all,

Our saving grace next season may be one of the following:

a)New managers who will alter teams to his style and players needing to accustom themselves with the EPL and each other.
    b) Euro’s will take a toll on most of our rivals as many of them are with England, France and Belgium
    c) Our players will be well rested as they are either injured, returned too late, not likely to be picked or will warm the bench except Ozil.
    d) Leicester will not likely be able to avoid injuries next season with games often 2 – 3 times a week.

So I expect similar to this season

  13. tsgh says:

🙂 Kev- you starting to agree with someone like moi who wears spandex underneath fur coat for a night out is worrying..

How you doing Rick? Its been a while. Hope all is well?

  14. tsgh says:

Rico- unfortunately BVb has accepted its position as a feeder club for FC Hollywood. Reason I attest Pep was not tested in Bundesliga…

At least the old SPL had Rangers and Celtic with similar resources; the Bundesliga has too many AW’s and his ilk

  15. allezkev says:

    Hi Herb

Yes, Herbert Chapman was a genius, no debate needed on that one…

He was already thinking in terms of rebuilding the team halfway through its hat trick of League Titles, 33/34/35.
Not for him any form of stagnation or penny pinching in the transfer market.

George Allison simply ran with the Chapman blueprint up to 1939-40 when football was suspended. The rumour at the time was that a Bryn Jones inspired Arsenal were heavily tipped to reclaim the Title in 1940, but a bloody Charlie Chaplin clone intervened…

Arsenal actually lost several top quality young players during the war, many were RAF aircrew, not least a raft of experienced players who retired during or shortly after the cessation of hostilities in 1945.

It was widely accepted in football circles at the time that Arsenal suffered more heavily in terms of playing staff, than the rest of its competitors, due to the War…

  16. Allan Sutcliffe says:

The object of bringing in new people is to improve the team and i include AW in this and i don’t see anybody who is better. The idea put around that Theo Walcott is on the move is ridiculous, can you honestly see any team paying his £130,000pw wages.Besides in my view he is still a very good and important player in the team.

  17. allezkev says:

    Hi Rick…

    21 again!!! ?

That’s great news regarding Jon Toral, its the whole point of having an Academy and loaning players out.
It’s not always a disaster, recent loanees who’ve established themselves in the 1st team include; Coquelin, Wilshere, Bendtner, Ashley Cole, Szczesny and Bellerin.

  18. Herb's Army says:

Do you think there was a shift in philosophy at Arsenal after WWII Kev?
The perception is that we’re very conservative and very low risk, which has clearly been a major factor in our stagnation, but it wasn’t always that way, was it?

  19. tsgh says:

Kev- some excellent piece of history…
The media loving scousers will disagree with ”It was widely accepted in football circles at the time that Arsenal suffered more heavily in terms of playing staff, than the rest of its competitors, due to the War…”.

The believe the invented football and deserve nothing but to be considered the greatest club ever…

  20. Wavy says:

Transfers? We have just made the first one, obviously! Welcome home, Jon Toral. Right that’s the winger/attacking midfield role taken care of. One box ticked.
Cost nil/zero/ zilch! Just up Wenger’s alley!

Who’s next? Will there be a next? Will it be Wenger’s spawn or will we have a new chief spotter of talent?

  21. rico says:

    Afternoon Rick and all..

Belated happy birthday and hope you had a lovely time away. Good news re Toral, glad it looks like he’s finally going to break through. He’s clearly done very very well at Birmingham…

  22. allezkev says:

That’s an interesting point you pose Herb…

I’d have to say, that for the majority of the club’s history, be it struggling in Woolwich, Norris in the 20’s, immediate post war austerity, stagnation in the late 50’s early 60’s and my time from the mid 60’s to today, that Arsenal have been a penny pinching, ultra conservative club, who have failed in the most part to really make the most of who they are, where they were and the massive support they have/had…

Chapman, Dein, Danskin, Humble, Wenger to a lesser degree, have probably been those involved at the club who saw the bigger picture and how to drive the club towards a more ambitious level.

I love the 1930’s because it showed that with ambitious people at the helm and a no-nonsense transfer policy, just what our club, in the heart of London, one of the greatest, most prosperous cities in the world, could achieve…

  23. allezkev says:

Ginge, Liverpool are a great club, with a great support, but Arsenal are a bigger club, always have been, all we needed was the right people running it, people with ambition and a vision, not the likes of Peter Hill-Wood and his ilk…

  24. rico says:

Apparently Coquelin is playing for the under 21’s tonight. Either he’s in the naughty corner or the manager wants to make sure they best Villa…

  25. Le Coq Monster says:

  28. allezkev says:

Francis Coquelin and Calum Chambers played 90 minutes of Arsenal Under-21s’ 3-1 play-off final win against Aston Villa.

The senior stars were joined by fellow first-teamers Joel Campbell and Santi Cazorla as an experienced Steve Gatting side earned promotion to Division One.

The Gunners’ evening didn’t get off to the best start, as Rushian Hepburn-Murphy capitalised on a defensive error with a powerful header to give the visitors the lead.

The hosts equalised just after the half-hour mark, courtesy of Chris Willock’s poke home from a few yards out.

Arsenal were the better side after the break, and their pressure paid off when Stephy Mavididi looped a header past Matija Sarkic.

The striker was on target again three minutes from the end to secure victory in front of 2,357 fans at Emirates Stadium.
    SETTING THE SCENE
Gatting made three changes to his side following Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers in the semi-final.

Campbell, Coquelin, Cazorla and Chambers all started as Ben Sheaf and Serge Gnabry dropped to the bench. Tomas Rosicky did not feature.
    FIRST HALF
Arsenal were punished for their sluggish start on a drizzly evening in N5 when Hepburn-Murphy headed past Matt Macey, after the goalkeeper was pressured into a rushed clearance.

The Gunners responded to their setback in the right manner though, with Coquelin and Cazorla both seeing efforts miss the target by a matter of inches.

The latter went close again just past the half-hour mark, when his powerful drive forced Sarkic into a wonderful save.

But it was Willock who equalised for Gatting’s side three minutes later, when he bundled the ball into the back of the net after Mavididi had put it on a plate for the winger from a few yards out.

Arsenal went into the break deadlocked, but could have snatched the lead had Sarkic’s reflexes not denied Campbell.
    SECOND HALF
The Gunners started the next 45 minutes on the front foot as Willock continued to cause mayhem with a low drive into the side-netting.

Cazorla was next to go close, when his low drive on the hour mark crept the wrong side of the post after some lovely build-up play.

Arsenal’s pressure later paid off when Willock returned the favour for Mavididi to loop a header into the back of the net.

The striker was on target again three minutes from the end, when he hammered Willock’s pass beyond Sarkic to cue celebrations.

U21 Premier League- Division 2- Play Off Final

    Arsenal 3 (Willock, Mavididi (2) Aston Villa 1 (Hepburn-Murphy)

    By Jeorge Bird @Emirates Stadium

Arsenal U21s secured their place in the top tier of second-string football with a hard-fought victory over their Aston Villa counterparts at Emirates Stadium tonight.

Steve Gatting’s side contained much first-team experience, with Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Calum Chambers and Joel Campbell all starting, but it was two of the club’s young starlets, Chris Willock and Stephy Mavididi, who proved to be the difference.

Willock was initially only named on the bench, but he was catapulted into the starting line-up following the late withdrawal of Serge Gnabry, and that proved to be a blessing in disguise as the winger equalised after an error from Matt Macey had allowed Rushian Hepburn-Murphy to give Villa the lead.

Willock later turned provider for Mavididi, and the latter doubled his tally in the closing stages as Arsenal, at long last, secured their place amongst the elite.

    Macey

    Pleguezuelo-Chambers-Bielik-Moore

    Coquelin-Cazorla

    Campbell-Reine Adelaide-C. Willock

    Mavididi

Subs: Sheaf (for Cazorla, 82), Hinds (for Campbell, 82). Not used: Keto, Johnson, Nketiah.

Arsenal started slowly and they very nearly gave away a goal in the early exchanges as Jeff Reine-Adelaide needlessly squandered possession, but Villa were unable to take advantage.

Jerrell Sellars then fired over as Villa cranked up the pressure, and Arsenal eventually crumbled, with Macey losing control of the ball, and Hepburn-Murphy, who featured for Villa’s first-team last weekend, capitalised.

Arsenal sought to respond instantly, with the ever dangerous Willock seeing his effort cleared off the line. Cazorla, Mavididi and Coquelin all had chances to score, but it was Willock who would equalise as he applied the finishing touch to a slick move involving Cazorla and Mavididi.

Villa had opportunities to equalise before the break, but Arsenal stood firm and went into the break level.

Some supporters thought Willock had doubled his tally early in the second half, but the winger’s shot struck the side-netting.

It wasn’t long, though, before Arsenal went ahead, with Willock turning provider on this occasion for Mavididi, who headed in.

Villa’s confidence was waning, as demonstrated by Sellars’ attempt, which went way over the crossbar.

Macey then somewhat redeemed himself with a good save, before Kaylen Hinds and Ben Sheaf entered the fray in place of Campbell and Cazorla.

Hinds had a header saved, and then Mavididi added further gloss to the scoreline with a calm finish.

There was no way back for Villa after that point, and Arsenal lifted the trophy aloft in front of a small crowd.

Their form may have tailed off a little towards the end of the campaign, and they were reliant on the help of some senior stars along the way, but the important thing is that Arsenal U21s are going up.

Playing against the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool will surely be hugely beneficial for the development of the Arsenal youngsters.

As far as tonight’s game is concerned, Willock and Mavididi were both hugely impressive, whilst Cazorla and Coquelin also caught the eye.

Several of the players on show tonight won’t be regularly involved at this level next season, but those that do feature will be especially grateful for what has been achieved.

Anyone see that fracas at Upton Park last night ?………..stones were chucked at the ManU bus and hundreds of West Ham fans were traumatised after a window broke revealing Phil Jones face !

  31. tsgh says:

typical AW and AFC- we have chanced Xhaka for 2 years asking for player on loan and refusing to meet his Euros 22.7million release clause. When RM and co. start circling as the player’s profile goes up we have no choice but to offer more…

    Good morning Rico and all…

If Xhaka is bought we will have for ourselves a proper no.6 not the 2 by 2 CDM we have used in the last 2 years….

  32. tsgh says:

AW should not stop there, he should make a bid for BVB’s Weigl as well. A midfield of Weigl/Elneny plus Xhaka/AR16 as the pivot will be too strong for even the ATM of this world.
It will be like a hybrid of Kroos and Gattusso.

  33. Le Coq Monster says:

With all these midfielders we have and more to come is Arsene going to play a 1-9-1 formation ?

It’ll probably mean quite a few newbies stuck in moderation though…

  38. tsgh says:

Le coq, our midfield is dire though…; Look at what happened after SC19 went off injured..

We need goal scoring midfielders who could be wingers.
Analysing the so-called creativity stats that fans keep bringing up we are still the 5th/6th most creative team in the EPL. That is also taking into consideration the influence/assist of Ozil.

Although we make one of the least attempt on goals per game we are still the 3rd most efficient team in the league whilst Leicester are the 5th most efficient.

  39. Le Coq Monster says:

tsgh…………….Alexis, Ozil, Ramsey, Cazorla, Elneny, Coq, Wheelchair…..really dire ! 🙂 more like down to tactics and lack of an Suarez/Aguero type striker .

  40. Le Coq Monster says:

C word or F word ?……………………just replace it with the word …..Kroenke !……………..for example…………….Stan Kroenke is a Kroenking Kroenke !.

  41. tsgh says:

Le coq- we may agree to disagree but whether due to tactics or players not fitting together we have a poor midfield in my humble opinion.

Alexis is not a midfielder and so I am not counting him.

In terms of scoring from midfield we score 11th on table… only Ar16, Iwobi, Ox, Ozil have contributed from midfield.

Theo, Alexis, Campbell are forwards… Ozil should actually be considered a forward if we are to go along the traditional view that a no.10 is an attacker or 2nd striker.

In defence areas we have conceded the 4th highest shots from midfield.

  42. tsgh says:

We can blame OG12 for being shite in front of goal but the fact is we have 9th most goals in the league in their home stadium. That is not good at all to win even the Norwegian League…

We do not create enough and score enough from midfield… unfortunately.

Compare winning teams of recent era, Chelsea (Lampard, Hazard, Oscar) City (Toure, Silva, Nasri) to our last winning team with midfielders such as(Pires, ljunberg, Edu) contributing 18+ goals between them in the EPL along shows where the issue lies…

  43. tsgh says:

If Ozil has twice more assist than De Bruyne and Silva put together one can not argue that we are wasteful in front of goal on one hand and also argue that Aguero will win us the title if we had him in our team when stats say City create more chances than us but are less efficient…

  44. bradster says:

    Hi All,

I think the problem is that we are so focused on passing it around that every one is outside the box except Giroud, no one shoots from distance and only Sanchez runs the ball into the box.
2 HM and Ozil who prefers to play out the box will also result in less goals from Midfield, Cazorla and Ozil score very few from free kicks if Sanchez doesn’t take it.

We’re probably one of the smallest sides so headed goals from corners or free kicks are highly unlikely too from anyone other than defenders or Attackers.

  45. tsgh says:

True Brad; maybe its also because majority of our players believe they are good on the ball and so they want to get involved with play.

One other factor is none of our players are comfortable with their back to opponent goal; only OG12 is comfortable in that area and so he does not mind staying ahead of play whilst the others prefer to when the game is in front of them…

The reason SC19 has flourished when he has been moved into the double pivot position whilst apart from Sc19’s first 6 months before he was found out he struggled as a no.10.

  46. Wavy says:

Sorry to hear about Rico’s internet ailments, hope they get better soon! However, when I first read your post Kev I thought you’d written internal problems! My mind raced at overtaking speed wondering what could possibly be wrong, then I read it again, the relief…….tangible. Just pay the bill Rico and they’ll reconnect you! hahahahahahaha!?

  48. Le Coq Monster says:

Oops forgot about Iwobi, tsgh………..and yes, we could do with more goals from midfield, but remember !, Ozil has created the most chances ever in an EPL season so he`s obviously doing his bit, had we had an Aguero or Suarez or even Aubameyang we would probably have won the league, but it`s getting one of those players and Wenger wont pay the extra buck……………..there`s more chance of the fat Spud Adele giving up her Greggs the Bakers season ticket !.

  49. Le Coq Monster says:

Quite surprised there are no signs of a party on here seeing as ManU losing guarenteed us at least 4th spot for the 20th year in a row !…………………where`s the Champers ?.

🙂 Le Coq. 4th is ‘like’ a trophy!

The spuddies dvd division got ahead of themselves and made a dvd showing how they finished above us…

It is likely to prove highly embarrassing if the lose and win on Saturday…

Maybe the DVD will be re-titled the gap is closing…

  51. Le Coq Monster says:

Hahaha…………..if The Spuds manage to Kroenke it up on Sunday and we finish above them, then even though this is one of the most disappointing seaons under Wenger I will probably have my biggest laugh !……………….please Dennis, make it so !.

  52. Wavy says:

9 months! 9 months! It seemed to be a small bend/extension of his knee, and that was all! 9 months! Welbeck on the sick bay bed again.
Now then, will Wenger or his successor buy and adequate replacement or will he, true to type say, we have enough, and promote one of the children? All in the interests of squad loyalty and unity you understand? Whist Ebeneezer Wenger sits in his counting house counting Stan’s money?
He must surely buy a proper forward to replace Welbeck adequately?

    What a shocker!

  53. Adam says:

That is terrible news, especially for Danny. It will be interesting to see how Wenger reacts with regard to a replacement. 🙂

  54. Micko says:

Oddly enough didn’t we nearly sign Frank de Boer and his brother Ronald from Ajax when Arsene first rolled into town all them years ago !
Would have been quite a coup at the time but it wasn’t to be.

  56. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Evening Lovelies and Hunkies.

9 months out. that is terrible. For Danny. I really like him as a player and as a person. he is humble but knows he is good enough for us.

He will be like a new signing next February. Exactly in time when the window shuts. But imo we will see him in August 2017.

I hope its not a lifeline for Theo. I hope its a lifeline for Joel.

  57. Le Coq Monster says:

Ssshhh Devil !……….saying too many names and Arsene will think we dont need to replace Danny !…………………..he probably thinks Chuba can take Danny`s place………..shit !, I`ve just mentioned another name !………and then there`s Eddie Nketiah !……………damn !, I`m such a blabber mouth !…………….I`d better shut up before I save Stan £50M or so !

  58. allezkev says:

Welbeck out for 9 months is a catastrophe for the player, and shit sandwich for the club…

No excuse for Wenger then, not that that’s ever stopped him sitting on his big stupid hands and doing fcuk all…

Well Arsene, you’re drinking at the Last Chance Saloon, mon ami…
Do nothing and you’ll deserve everything that’s thrown at you, no sympathy for you if you procrastinate this summer.

Akpom ain’t the answer, nor is Giroud and as for Walcott, don’t make me laugh.
