The Enigma known as Olivier Giroud. Two way battle for Arsenal man…

Written by Merlin96

Stats

Stats never lie. It’s the manipulation and interpretation that lie.

Let’s compare goal-scoring stats which prove Giroud is 2nd only to Henry when it comes to goals scored.

Thierry Henry’s goal tally went into double figures during each of his eight seasons with us, his lowest figure was 12 goals in 27 games during his injury-plagued final season. Giroud has notched up double figures (17, 22, 14 and 16) in all four seasons he’s been at Arsenal, even though he missed a majority of 2013/14 season and played most games last season from the bench.

Anelka, Wiltord, Kanu, Bergkamp, Adebayor, Walcott and Podolski failed to score a double-figured tally for four seasons. Van Persie scored 13, 20, 22 and 37 goals in 4 out of 8 seasons at Arsenal and Walcott managed 13, 11 and 21 goals in 3 out of 9 seasons. Alexis scored 16 and 13 goals during his two seasons and Welbeck scored 4 in both seasons since signing for us although last season he may have got a lot more had he not been injured for most of the campaign.

A summary from Jonathan Wilson “Inverting the Pyramid” explains the role of a modern forward like Olivier Giroud.

Sniffer forwards like Michael Owen and Theo Walcott are obsolescence today. They need to do more than scoring goals and must be creators and to a degree, defenders. It is not enough in modern football when Michael Owen defined his role as: “I’ve definitely developed my game, coming off and holding the ball up better and trying to link a bit more, but I’ve got to keep the main thing which is scoring goals and trying to get in behind people,” he said. “The main aim at the end of the day is to put the ball in the back of the net.”

“I can’t believe that in England they don’t teach young players to be multi-functional,” Mourinho said. “To them it’s just about knowing one position and playing that position. To them a striker is a striker and that’s it. For me, a striker is not just a striker. He’s somebody who has to move, who has to cross, and who has to do this in a 4-4-2 or in 4-3-3 or in 3-5-2.”

The modern forward can be successful without scoring goals. During Euro 1992, Denmark’s two centre-forwards, Flemming Povlsen and Kim Vilfort, scored between them only one goal and that is in the final. Both were widely perceived having an excellent tournament. Their job was to challenge for long balls, retain possession if they won it, and lay it off for Henrik Larsen and Brian Laudrup, the two more attack-minded midfielders. They seemed at the time an aberration, but it was a sign of things to come.

Zidane, one of the greatest playmakers, but a player of limited pace and almost no defensive instinct. Aime Jacquet’s solution was to deploy a 4-3-2-1 giving Zidane a free role and fielded three defensive midfielders – Didier Deschamps, Emmanuel Petit and Christian Karembeu. Youri Djorkaeff was included as the 2nd creative presence. Stephane Guivarc’h was much derided as the worst centre-forward ever to win a World Cup. But he performed a vital function to provide a focal point and hold the ball up for the creators behind – Zidane and Djorkaeff – to provide assists or to score.

Simply to be a creator is no longer enough, simply to be a goalscorer is not enough; the best modern forwards have at least an element of universality and – crucially – they have to be able to function within the system.

The modern forward, at one end, is a target-man and quick-man, a battering ram and goalscorer, imposing physically and yet also capable of finesse, e.g. Drogba and Adebayor. At the other end, he mixes the best qualities of being a creator and goalscorer, capable of dropping deep or pulling wide and adept at playing the final ball as well as taking chances himself, e.g. Thierry Henry, Luis Suarez.

Somewhere in between is Olivier Giroud, an imposing target-man, physically strong in the box and puts in a defensive shift to chase and harass the opposition once the ball is lost in opponent’s half. He also holds the ball up superbly to bring attacking midfielder’s into play. Many overlook his finesse with his beautifully taken volley and scoring with his very first touch.

This comment in 2013 explained why Olivier Giroud will still remain vital to Wenger’s plan to lead the line for next season.

Arsene Wenger conceded his squad is “lightweight” and relies on the physical input provided by Giroud.

We have a team that is a bit short, lightweight and more focused on mobility and technical movement, so he [Giroud] is the one guy who has that strength and structure for us. That fighting up front is very important for us.

So it looks like Giroud will be at Arsenal for a while yet.

Transfer gossip:

Both Leicester and Liverpool want t sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain according to reports. With him being out injured and no real due back date, I personally can’t see much truth in this but who knows.

Arsenal have made a bid to sign Udinese forward Duvan Zapata, according to the Italian club’s president.

There’s a headline on NN which suggests Flamini might be staying on for one more season which if true, would be a shocking move by the club….

Have a great Sunday guys and gals….

Nice Sunday morning read. I personally think Giroud is a second striker for a top four side. He would come in and smash defences in the premier league when the main man needs a rest or assistance.

  2. rico says:

Thanks Merlin. I personally wouldn’t put the names Giroud and Henry/Bergkamp in the same sentence…

Giroud might score a few goals, but we need someone quicker and more prolific in front of goal. And someone who doesn’t take a holiday for 3 months in a season….

    Morning All

    Morning Rico

    Morning Adam

It’s cloudy and dull in London Town, but it’s a very peaceful day in my neck of the woods…
Interesting reading some cricket stats, and if you just go by the stats, we are currently watching the best bowling attack in the entire history of English cricket…

  4. goonster says:

Great post merlin I am a huge giroud fan and won’t deny the great work he does up front holding the ball up and laying a pass for the midfielders behind him. He’s played some sublime passes in the past that’s bergkampe-esque but if we are going to win a major title i.e premier League or Champions League, he can’t be our main striker. With giroud up top we are guaranteed a top 4 but not the actual premier league title. And as for zapata, oh God no. He’s no better than what we have.

  5. goonster says:

Kev 😀 Kevin pietersen is awesome I guess:D hey when is the ashes series. That’s the only one follow.

  6. goonster says:

The who now kev 😀 he’s Dutch alright but I can’t place the name and the face together. Definitely not a footballer or a porn star so hey I have no clue kev 😀

  7. goonster says:

I ll hold on to oxchambo a little while longer. The kid ll come good. He’s got it all. Pace power and a good shot on him. All he needs is confidence in his ability and coaching. I ll hate to see him somewhere else. He ll rip the league in a less tiki taka team. He ll excel at leceister and blow up under klopp. Can’t take the chance.

  8. goonster says:

Kev I see you guys are doing great with your build up towards the euro. I see a quarter final finish for ingerland. Since the oranj didn’t make it this year I ll be cheering for you guys and err the German national team too. Lol

  9. goonster says:

Am doing fabulous maam. Just bored no real football for another month. Don’t know what I ll do with my time. The euros and copa America don’t count:D just wish wenger ll hurry up and sign a top class center forward. I see ts have been belittling morata’s goal return over the week. Lol ts you just don’t quite do ya. Morata might not be world class yet but just like martial he’s a super talent. Some click early and everything they touch is gold while others bloom slowly but once they hit that stride they never stop till they retire. Sorry ginge I ll take alvaro morata than have no one come in and that includes duvan zapata. He’s shit rico. Lol

  10. allezkev says:

Yeah Stan, I agree, England do look a pretty good outfit, although the defence worries me.

What do you make of Vincent Janssen, Stan?
I saw him on a YouTube vid and he looked good, had that classic Dutch technique, very comfortable on the ball, dealt with the physical challenges ok, left-foot, right-foot, headers, penalties, scored with the lot…

  11. goonster says:

Plus you seem to forget something ts. Santi ozil ensure heck even Sanchez tend to play better with a mobile striker leading the line. Am willing to wager that if we end up signing morata he ll score 25 or more goals in his first season with us. Wanna take that bet ts 😀

  12. goonster says:

Kev Jansen is a work in progress. He still needs to cut it for the top 2 in the eredivisie before I consider him a talent. I think he should head to Ajax or psv this summer. It’s too early to say but he does look good but not Arsenal standard yet. He’s no better than welbeck akpom or Joel currently.

  13. goonster says:

Well that means kane might be moving then. Would Jansen sit on the bench?? I would hope not. If they get him then good on them. I ll love him at arsenal but not as a first choice striker!

  14. goonster says:

Hey Adam what’s up my man?? What are you doing this summer? Got any plans? Gee I met this chic last week and she already wants to take a trip with me to the Maldives!!! Can you believe that? Lol talk about being desperate 😀

  15. goonster says:

Adam 😀 he’s not a blonde adonis that I guarantee you. There’s only one of me in the universe. Two and the universe ll implode 😀

  16. goonster says:

Easy for you to say rico 😀 lol I wish I could relax but am to hyper to ever sit in one place. Hey whatever happened to agag?? Rico when was the last time you heard from her??

  17. goonster says:

I miss agag. She always make me less tense when watching the arsenal. Rico please be a dear and send her an email. Hope she’s alright. The poor dear.

  18. goonster says:

I blame wenger for the apathy felt by most of our fan base. Agag Emma arsenalDK heck even rocky have all been missing in action. Wonder where they all are now. Oh my I forgot about my man KT. Yikes.

  19. goonster says:

I think it’s the state of affairs rico. So many just got fed up and took up other hobbies. I don’t blame them. It’s hard being an arsenal supporter over the past few years.

  20. goonster says:

That’s why this season is so important. We have to hit the ground running. If we get the required players in we might give maureen a run for his money. I see pep Conte and klopp struggling next season. Maureen with his premier league experience and a whooping 500 million transfer kitty might push us all the way. Seriously we need a top class striker.

  21. goonster says:

Give toral a chance. He’s 21 one now and no longer a prospect. Bring him back or lose him to another premier League team. He’s everything flamini isn’t. Stop wasting squad place and number for an old has been. Toral needs to feature in next season’s campaign. He’s too good for the championship.

  22. obi says:

    Morning All:
Goonster, can I get in on that bet..lol. Morata 20 goals first season, am here dying bro. Dude couldn’t manage 12 with a much talented team that plays more direct than Arsenal in a 3 team league, ok. I have only seen Jassen once but he was good and actually has a better goal rate than Morata, about the same size and I think is younger. So Jassen for 15-20m vs Morata for 50m, easy decision at best they are both potential/ 2nd strikers. Morata is overated.

  23. goonster says:

Why keep flamini though?? What football sense does it make? He barely plays??? Why not give his squad place to someone young and exciting??? Toral reminds me of a young fabregas but with pace and better foot work. Under a good manager (old wenger) he could become world class. He needs his chance. Plus he’s good mates with Hector. #Bring back total

  24. goonster says:

Obi are you willing to take that bet??? Morata ll score 25 goals in this current arsenal team.

  25. goonster says:

18 goals in the league 6 in the champions league 4 in the fa cup and maybe 4 in the league cup. So what do we have in the end?

  26. goonster says:

Obi am Dutch and yes (sigh) the eredivisie is shit. Kezman scored 34 goals before joining chelsea the rest is history. Our league had Salomon kalou scoring 28 goals and dirk kuyt 36. What does that tell you? Remember Alphonso alves?? Does he ring a bell??? Hey what about the new Ronaldo Memphis depay??? Look man don’t compare the eredivisie with the liga Calcio. It’s laughable.

  27. goonster says:

DB10 was a hit with the Amsterdam fans ( the only Ajax player I ever loved) he was a hit from the beginning. Went to inter and stagnated. We know what happened next. What am I saying? Am saying some players are shit with some teams and are world class with others. Yes he’s shit with juve (according to you obi not me) but I guarantee you he ll be a hit with us. He’s a big game player. He came off the bench to score the winning goal in the Italian cup final. Yet he’s shit???? I don’t think so.

  28. goonster says:

Scored against his former club (real madrid) both legs when they met in the champions league and you think he’s shit. Alright then. I ll be ready to feed you humble pies my man 😀 wait for it. Lol

  29. goonster says:

Rico I didn’t want to even go there maam. I had to bring more glaring stats and info. If I had said Henry he ll counter with “Henry was a winger and played little under lippi” lol so I went with bergy 😀

  30. goonster says:

Cheers rico. Obi is ts in disguise 😀 they agree on almost everything lol but hey I ll give them this. They know their football just a warped version:D

  31. goonster says:

I know rico I know 😀 if we all agree this comment section ll be over before it even begins. Lol

  32. goonster says:

Maam it’s funny how those names keep popping back at us all those years. Am not gonna lie to you rico I was worried and scared we might actually get kalou!!! A part of me believed it. Lol

  33. goonster says:

Remember Lee’s best mate Chris samba 😀 every window that twat was linked to us until 3 seasons ago. Funny thing was some fans wanted him too. Lol lol lol. Chris samba in an arsenal shirt. That’s a scary prospect 😀

  34. goonster says:

Jiminy cricket I forgot all out sanogo!!! Yikes oh my rico if wenger don’t find any top class center forward do you think he plans on bringing back yaya??? Oh God help us. Knowing wenger he just might. God in heaven.

  35. goonster says:

Lol its been quiet on the transfer front. Something is brewing. I can feel it. Either we get a goezte James Rodriguez type of player or a Titus bramble look alike 😀 I hope it’s the former. My heart can’t take no more disappointments.

  36. goonster says:

Oh God yes 😀 but not gonna happen rico. Wenger won’t be able to handle him plus his wage demands are astronomical. No chance. Lol

  37. goonster says:

But he ll get the job done Rico. That’s all we ask of him. He’s manure bound though. Jose is his best mate. Shame really. He ll make them great again or he ll falter. Pray it’s the latter. Lol

  38. obi says:

You are on the roll Goonster…lol. I will take the bet if we do get Morata. I do agree with you on Toral though and his decision making is better than Iwobi I can’t see him not making the team. Rodriguez over Gozte for me.

  39. goonster says:

Nah I ll take goezte mate. He can play on the wings behind the striker and as a false nine. James is just one dimensional. There’s a reason zizou isn’t playing him. Goezte is a super player. One of my favorite dortmund players ever. After sammer chapuisat Kohler zorg Moller rosciky goezte and then reus. Those are my favorite dortmund players of all time 😀

  40. goonster says:

So you think he’s heading our way rico??? Lol I want some of that Apple pie you had for breakfast 😀 zlatan to arsenal???? Not in a million years. Lol

  41. goonster says:

Maybe he ll stay back in PSG then but if he’s moving to the epl there’s only one team he ll be playing for and that’s maureen’s manure (see what I did there :D) he hates pep, won’t live in a shithole like liverpool so that rules out liverpool. Totenham are just too small for him and he hasn’t forgiven wenger for asking him to come on trial plus we really can’t afford him rico. We really can’t. He’s manure bound.

  42. goonster says:

Played in the series A twice in his career. Have played in Spain and France so hey his next destination has got to be England.

  43. goonster says:

Rico do you know something we don’t know 😀 you sound so confident. Have you been speaking with the tea Lady 😀

  44. Marshall says:

Nice post. Giroud huh, whatever the stats may read he’s definately not a title winning striker. Is there a stat of how much possesion he looses and lifts up his hands or bottles clear cut chances.

A Suarez Aguero esque type who doesn’t give up on a challenge is all we need. A mobile one too. Hate everytime we pick pace to attack he slows down the pace and eventually kills the potential counter and tippy tappy begins.

Auba is moving clubs… I can only dream 🙂

  45. rico says:

    🙂 Marshall re Giroud…

Real Madrid isn’t it for PEA? Which would possibly mean they won’t keep Morata…

  46. goonster says:

I think we sign one more super player and that’s it. Ozil won’t renew his contract and will be sold next season. We ll promote from within. Willock has been getting rave reviews so I expect him and toral to be promoted next season. Joel gnabry and flamini to make way for them. As for the elephant in the room (Walcott) he ll be here next season too. Wenger won’t give up on him and I for one won’t begrudge him. With xhaka in the team we need a speedster who can latch unto his long balls. Am hoping wenger tweaks his formation a lot next season. We can’t keep playing this side to side crabby footie. It’s not good for adam’s health 😀

  47. goonster says:

Hey rico what about that new kid. The right back. What’s his name again? How good is he? Do you see him taking over from bellerin whenever he decides to FUCK off to Barca. Let’s not kid ourselves. It ll happen sometime in the future. So we need a contingency plan.

  48. Adam says:

Goonster. Bang on. With Olivier in the team we are super predictable and lack dimension. Thierry was right about him before Wenger told him to wind it in and start saying nicer things about him. 🙂

  49. goonster says:

Lol olivier ll come in handy Adam against when we need a battering ram but for a championship chasing team he’s not the man to lead us to glory. Everyone knows this evening giroud himself does. Only wenger sees things differently. Signing ozil and not buying a super striker is like buying condoms with holes in it 😀 it just doesn’t make no sense.

  50. goonster says:

Gee rico he just signed a professional contract with us a few weeks ago. Can’t hit his name now.

  51. goonster says:

Rico Henry wants the arsenal job. He ll say anything. Heck he ll even say sanogo us his reincarnation 😀 don’t be surprised maam.

  52. Adam says:

Stan. I believe they are those intensely calorific, tooth-rotting, sugar-rush-inducing, sticky biscuity things that the Dutch use to enhance their pouts.

  53. Adam says:

It was some time ago Stan. When I was a cad and a bounder. 🙂
Mrs Adam rather likes them too, but limits herself to 4 at a time. 🙂

  54. goonster says:

Lol I can them all day long. Haven’t had one in ages though. Mum makes them in large quantities. Bless her heart.

  55. goonster says:

Yes maam Johnson. Can’t remember his first name. How good is he? I ve read only good things about him. Have you watched him play??

  56. Adam says:

I think you might like them Rico. In moderation with a cup of tea they are very sweet and rather indulgent. 🙂

  57. Adam says:

My friend worked in Amsterdam for a year and spent all his time in the coffee shops or eating Stroopwaffels. After a year he had no teeth and weighed about 300 pounds.

  58. rico says:

I’m not a fan of sweet stuff Adam, apart from a cream tea and an odd couple of squares of chocolate….

🙂 Goonie, you want me to type it again to make sure?? lol

  59. goonster says:

Lol Adam you old tease. I ve had them all my life and I have all my full compliment of teeth thank you plus I never added any weight. Adam you re just an exaggerator 😀 is that even a word?? Lol

  60. goonster says:

I would love to meet every last one of them Adam. When I want to write your autobiography 😀

  61. goonster says:

Couldn’t find no videos on chiori Johnson but saw few clips of mavivdi(spelling) and nketiah. Both look promising. But what can I say about willock?? What a player we have on our hands if he keeps improving. He looks too good for the under 18s and 21s. He needs a loan move. Wow am so chuffed. Haven’t felt this way about a player breaking through since jack the lad all those years ago.

  62. Merlin96 says:

    Good day all!

Yes, Wenger will not give up Walcott and also, Walcott insisted he will stay to fight for his place (why, that is earning 140,000pw by sitting on the bench). He also needs Walcott to comply with the “12 homegrown players” rule.

Giroud will lead the line and Wenger is sniffing around for bargains and will only pay silly money for Benzema or Higuaín.

Sadly, going by trend, Wenger will proclaim “Yaya Sanogo as the 2nd coming of Anelka” who will be Giroud back-up. Another tall and physical player but with pace.

Plus, Wenger may promote within and convert Gnabry into a centre-forward.

Yes, Wenger knew the problem, but which proven 20+ league goal scorer is around for sale – Sturridge or Vardy?

Fancy a trade-in with Walcott for Sturridge?

  63. goonster says:

No way he’s a crock and a selfish bastard. He plays only for Sturridge and no one else. Thanks but no thanks besides we already have too many Injury prone players. Walcott for one of their Brazilians and it’s a deal 😀

  64. Adam says:

Rico. Yes, Ricciardo was really pissed off at the end and Lewis, after sulking and pouting through the pressed after qualifying, had cheered up somewhat.

  65. Merlin96 says:

Giroud has scored 14 goals in 46 games for his country and Henry likens his playing style to that of former England striker Emile Heskey.

“I was always feeling sorry for Emily Heskey when he played for England. Giroud is that type of guy.

“Michael Owen was taking all the glory but the people couldn’t see what Heskey was doing for Owen.

“But if you take Owen away then suddenly you look at Heskey and he doesn’t score.

“So you need a Heskey and an Owen.”

    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/519212/Thierry-Henry-This-is-why-Olivier-Giroud-is-the-French-Emile-Heskey

Phew! Thanks Rico for getting this article before Henry’s “Emil Heskey” comparison.

It proved my point that for every “Giroud” there must be a “Michael Owen” to complement him.

Pity, Walcott just did not cut the mustard last season, plus Alexis was injured and off-form when Giroud was off-form with nobody to carry the scoring slake.

Giroud is good for 13+ league per season.
If Walcott should contribute double-figure league goals and Alexis to hit 20+ goals, we are there with the best in goal-scoring department.

Not forgetting bit-part players in Iwobi, Campbell and in the absence of Welbeck, perhaps another new striker may collectively contribute 20+ goals as well.

If we are to score 75 league goals next season, the following contributions are achievable:

    60% = 43 goals by FORWARD
    30% = 22 goals by MIDFIELD
14% = 10 goals by DEFENCE and “own goal”

  66. Merlin96 says:

Yes, Rico, @#$%@ miscommunication amongst pit crew, engineer and pit boss lost Riccardo his win.

Sound like Arsene Wenger trying to change tactic on the pitch without the team getting and understanding his messages.

  67. Merlin96 says:

    Goonster! 😀

You are biased by all those tabloid reports on Sturridge.
You want to keep a satiated 140,000pw injury-prone forward, with no ambition and aggression on the pitch, who skipped out of 50:50 tackle in the box or one who had played with Suarez and can play with Alexis to score 10+ league goal per season?

I will rather trade for an injury-prone proven 10+ league goal scorer rather than keep an injury-prone player who is a headless chicken who simply can’t click with FORWARD-LINE and Ozil.

Piers Morgan offers to pay for Aaron Ramsey’s flights to Barcelona to get him to leave Arsenal

    Read more: http://metro.co.uk/2016/05/29/piers-morgan-offers-to-pay-for-aaron-ramseys-flights-to-barcelona-to-get-him-to-leave-arsenal-5911511/#ixzz4A3bXzcfn

Ramsey is one of the primary reasons why we failed to win the 2015/16 title.
When the chips are down, with Wilshere, Cazorla, Coquelin and OX, he failed to step-up his game and let the team down.

To think that Barca will bid fro him … and we should bite their hand off quickly if they seriously table a 30-mil offer for him.

  69. Merlin96 says:

“If Alves leaves they will need a full-back – there are lots in Europe.”

Having played for Barca’s youth team for eight years, it’s likely that Bellerin harbours hopes of lining out for the senior side one day. His priorities for now though remain firmly in North London.

“I don’t really get informed about offers. My agent is the one that works on these sort of things, but I’m happy to receive interest from such great clubs. As a player it’s really nice.”
    ……………………………………………………..

I like Bellerin’ comments, albeit quite ambiguous.

But if Arsene Wenger should leave next season, and him being the main reason for Bellerin’s rapid development, all bets are off.

I think he will return to Barca when he is 24-25 year old.

  70. Joaquim Moreira says:

    How was Akpom yesterday?
Giroud needs a player close him . A faster player. He his a good player.
    Flamini stays?
with wilshere fit 1 month a year; Cazorla can’t play all the games now; Rosicky and Arteta off and …others?
We need a young player and give opportunities to a young player for be ready to a cal.

  71. rico says:

Adam, as you know I am a big fan of Lewis, so I was rather pleased…

Hi Merlin, it would have been posted sooner had you not used 3,00000 words to defend Olivier Giroud….. 😉

Sri Lanka are making a fight of this Test…

All the same I reckon our bowlers will skittle them out in the morning session tomorrow.

I wonder what next season holds in store for Hayden, Akpom, Toral, Martinez, Sanogo and Wellington Silva?
All of them are into their early twenties and if they don’t feature in and around the 1st team then it looks like many of them will be moved on…

Tomorrow it’ll be fantastic though as I’ll be working… ☹️
