Surprise Vermaelen return tonight? Form goes out the window for this game….

League form bears little relevance to Cup Competitions in my opinion and especially in this Cup.

Teams change, different personnel come in for their chance to show their worth, prove that they deserve a chance on a regular basis.
We can expect little different tonight either, we should see a mix and match of old and new, experience and inexperience but whoever gets their chance, I hope take it.

It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that Robin van Persie will sit this one out, maybe Wenger will keep him on the bench for that ‘just in case scenario’ – but I hope not, he needs to take this opportunity to rest and rest properly, not be sat around on a cold damp chilly night in London.

This is our starting eleven from the last round against Shrewsbury:

Fabianski
Jenkinson
Miquel
Djourou
Gibbs
Chamberlain
Coquelin
Frimpong
Benayoun
Ju Park
Chamakh

Substitutes:

Damien Martinez
Nico Yennaris
Daniel Boateng
Oguzhan Ozyakup
Ryo Miyaichi
Chucks Aneke
Sanchez Watt

Whether Wenger takes tonight’s fixture a little more seriously remains to be seen.

After all, we are facing a fellow Premier League side in Bolton, one that we huffed and puffed against in the league and only managed to score the second and third goal once they had been reduced to ten men.

He has no choice but to makes changes at both left and right back due to injuries to both Gibbs and Jenkinson, no doubt Santos will come in on the left but on the right, I’m not sure who will play.

I strongly suspect that Djourou will continue there, however, we are talking about Arsene Wenger here, who knows what he will do, maybe Yennaris will be his choice. 😉

Squillaci could come in to play alongside Miquel, unless of course Thomas Vermaelen makes a welcome return, he certainly looked ready in training yesterday..

Will he, or won't he??

Wouldn’t it be a sight for sore eyes to see him back in red and white tonight, a massive boost to every player in the side and every fan across the world?

Wenger said yesterday:

He is back in full training again, he is alright now.

I think he will be at least on the bench.

The midfield will no doubt be the same, unless Tomas Rosicky comes in to add a bit more experience to the side and having been an unused substitute on Sunday.

One pairing I hope stays the same as the last round is Ju Park and Chamakh, both need playing time and both need to have a good game. Hopefully they can get a few goals between them, not only for the team of course and the result tonight but maybe more importantly, for themselves.

Things are starting to improve a little for us but we should be very aware of the wounded animal…

Bolton are struggling, they are suffering maybe the worst they ever have done under Owen Coyle and tonight they will be glad to escape the pressure of the Premier League and they have just been on the receiving end of an earful from their captain Gary Cahill:

A few of the lads, myself included, need to have a look and question themselves over whether they are doing enough.

You can maybe afford to carry one player but you cannot afford to carry a handful and it has been different players in different games.

When you are under pressure, there is only so much you can head out and defend. It is difficult because I was out there (against Sunderland) thinking, ‘Why are we under so much pressure?’ We were defending all the time. We have to sort it out.

Owen Coyle has confirmed that he is planning to make seven or eight changes and no doubt those coming in will want to impress their boss, wanting him to believe that they could be the players to turn their season around – another reason for us to stay focussed from start to finish.

This is going to be a tough fixture and nothing should be taken for granted.

I hope Bolton sort their troubles out but not tonight, I hope they have to defend as much if not more than they had to at the weekend when they lost 2-0 to Sunderland.

We need to continue our mini recovery, grow and build each game and there would be no better way to go and face the Pensioners on Saturday than with another win under our belt…

Oh and of course be in the pot for the next round ….

I’d really like to see TV get half hour tonight and maybe against the chavs. Wouldn’t want to rush him back and lose him again but a boost it would be to have him on the park again.
Speaking of Park, it’s about time he made another appearance. The only other striker on the books in goalscoring form, albeit for S Korea, should be getting more opportunities. If (when) RVP gets injured we will be in serious trouble and Chamakh is not the answer. This guy may be just what we and Robin need.

  2. devilgunner says:

I hope he goes for 4-4-1-1 (In case you havent noticed that is my favourite formation)

I think he will go with

    Fabianski
    Yennaris, Miguel, Vermaelen, Santos
    Oxo,Coquelin, Frimpong,Benayoun
    Park
    Chamack

But I guess he will put in Rosicky and/or Squillaci .

Maybe Squillaci at right back??? Dont fall about laughing and dont bet on it either. We know that Arsene might do something crazy as this.

  3. rico says:

    Hi Bg

I hope we see TV at some stage and the way wenger is speaking, he’s ready but like you say, no rush, come on towards the end for 2o mins and see how he is before we travel to the chavs….

Looking forward to seeing Ju Park, if i can get a link 😉

  4. goonster says:

Return of the VERM! Men am so exited we ll thump them guys. Morning mama bear. Hi DG verm could play against the chavs this weekend can’t he? Thinks are looking up you guys.

  5. devilgunner says:

I do not think he will play Vermaelen against the Chavs. He will start him tonight but against the chavs it will be a long shot. So expect him to play vs Bolton but will be sub vs the chavs and then begin the game vs Marseille at home. If he remains healthy then he will play vs Marseille, Olympiakos and Dortmund. Unless we have more injuries. So expect rotation between him, Koscielny and Djourou and Mertesacker to keep them all healthy. Personally I think that the opponents will determine who plays. that is, TV05/Koscielny will play against those who play on the floor, while Per/Koscielny will play where there is aerial bombardments while the rest of the games it will be a combination of the above 4.

  6. rico says:

devil, i had noticed you favor that system, mind you, once we start, i sometimes haven’t a clue what we play…

Squilli and Miquel i think will start sadly, but if Squilli doesn’t start, we can assume that he won’t again unless things get very desperate…

  7. TT says:

The likely team to night for me is

    Flappy
    Yennaris Squid JD Miquel

    Le Coq Pong Rosicky

    Ox Park Benny

And this team with possibly Song,Chamack,AA,Vermalien,Martinez,Santos and Aneke on the bench should be two strong for a weakened Bolton team.

Hope we continue the recovery and get into next round as it will boost the team even more before the game against Chelsea next Saturday.

  8. rico says:

I forgot about Ryo Esp, he’s got to get his chance soon too, otherwise why did we bother keeping him back from a loan……

  9. Erick says:

    Morning all

I want to see Ryo and oxo start…….I also want to see Park get a game with Chamaka form being poor we will need park

  10. TT says:

yea rico he can play pretty much across the defense and many central defenders get their game time and tactical training as full backs as the errors there are not as likely to be as costly as those made in CB positions.

  11. rico says:

Howdy Erick, ditto and Chamakh to have a cracker….

I didn’t realise TT, thanks, you may very well be right then and he’ll play on the left but i don’t want to see Squilli…. 🙁

Off to walk Fido, then back for the day….

  12. Erick says:

Seems to me Arsene will be forced to mix it up today……..experience vs youth but I know Coqulin will play top top player

  13. Joaquim Moreira says:

    hi!
    Coquelin at RB.
We must a have a serious team for next two challenges. Park must play today. Fabiansky no doubt. Ox e Benny too. We have problems in back. Gibbs is ok? but he must rest. TW? maybe…

  14. Erick says:

JM I think Coquelin is another versatile player…wouldnt be surprised to see him plat at RB….top talent and great attitude

  15. Micko says:

    Morning all,
Should be a good game tonight, like you say lots of changes to both teams but we have a good exciting 2nd team to watch so I think we’ll come out on top.
45,000 at the stadium tonight, sign of the times.

  16. terry says:

one player has been crying out that he is a striker and this for me should be his oppourtunity to prove it… i am talkina about none other than walcott.
    ma line would be:
    flappy
    Yennaris, Miguel, squillachi, Santos
    Aox frimpong coquellen yossi
    walcott chamak

bench: park, vermy, diaby, anke, rosicky, watt, schezny.

  17. TT says:

Terry what makes you think that TW decision making is going to be any better if he plays as a striker? In almost all his one on one situations with the keeper he fails to score and most of his opportunities as a striker will be from such scenarios as he would be using his speed to get a way from his markers and towards the goal.

  18. AT88 says:

For us fans outside the UK, does the game play somewhere else than on AP right after the match has finished? United always get prioritised before us. 🙁

  19. terry says:

TW decision making is not the worst he is not a out and out winger. he does not hav the skill to play 1-2 on the wing, neither can he cut from the right wing to the cetre. but if you put in good though balls beyound the defence can run get on the end of the ball in front of the goliee and do what hes best at finishing..
he and ox can keep interchanging positions and strach the opponents back line.
i feel walcott as a striker nd arsahvin as the no 10 in the dennis role can be devastating all u need is some to unleash walcott and hes out of our reach in a jiffy.

  20. TT says:

terry I’m sorry but if finishing is what TW is best at then how bad is he at everything else? I have lost the count of how many times he has been 1 on 1 with a keeper and fluffed his lines and until he can start putting those chances away when playing on the wing there is no point in playing him in the middle.

  21. stevepalmer1 says:

    Morning all,
    Good one rico.
reaing some of your comments i can see one or two of you have not got faith in Theo up front, to be quite honest with you i feel the same theo has said on many occasions that he is a striker and not a winger he’s right about not being a winger, as for all these years he has shown that the hardest thing in the world is to cross the ball to somebody in the box, as for him being a striker that also is in doubt We have Park we have Ryo and we have the Ox whether they will be any better than Theo will only materialise when we finally get to see what they can do. Wenger has got the ideal oppotunity to give these guys a try, he must have faith in them why else would he have brought them, and i must admit i am also gagging to see what their about come on Wenger give the lads a go.

  22. devilgunner says:

According to some websites, Barcelona are considering a bid for Theo. Now this can mean either of the following:

    1) Either he is good and we are missing something.

    2) His agent is pumping up interest (much like Bendtner senior) so that he can get a fact payrise.

    3) It is just paper talk since they have nothing to write they continue to stir up all the shit. When we score we should all remove our tops to uncover “WHY ITS ALWAYS US”. (ladies included of course…. 😉 )

In the meantime…..can we do a part exchange for Messi???

  23. TT says:

No problem doing a part exchange for Messi but I must confess that I doubt Barcelona can afford the sum of money needed to get the deal through…. 😉

  24. stevepalmer1 says:

    Morning Devil,
If i was Theo i would put a lot more practice in, he may consider himself out of position but if he does get the chance to play upfront and fluffs his lines he may even lose any position. Theo as we know has blinding pace but he wastes this natural talent by not taking on his man, whether he has a football brain and his backpasses and forward runs are not being interpreted by other players is something else, but why a team like Barca would be looking at Theo has me bewildered

  25. terry says:

are you serious he misses chances one on one with the keeper.
he is very good on 1on1 situation with the keeper u cannot expect to convert every oppourtunity he gets… he is criticised for his poor decision making/ technique while playing on the wings he dosent think like a winger thats why he will never be a good winger.
he plays on the wings so unlike most strikers he only gets a very narrow angle to shoot from. play him cetrally and see the difference.
try watching walcott or arshavin its not that they donot defend but they jus dont realise it …. i dont know how to explain it to you but i was observing arshavin in the Champions league game v/s marse and he dint realise that he had to track back all of a sudden he realised he had to do so and ran back basically wht i am trying to say is when you players out of position they are mentally not ready always.

  26. rico says:

I think wenger is missing a trcik with theo – give him ten games in the striker role and we’ll see just why other clubs would love to buy him….

I know most will disagree but …..

  27. TT says:

terry go back to previous games and look at TW in 1 on 1. He regularly panics and makes the wrong decision. I have been following Walcott with great interest over the last few years and especially his wing play. He has the speed and agility to get past nearly any defender in the Prem but for some reason he does not utilize this nearly enough and when he does he has shown he can open up defenses and create chances for him self and others. He has a few assists and goals already this season but far to few for a player of his stature and ability. Look at Gervinho, a goal and 2 assist against Stoke. He made mistakes but never stopped trying and got his reward Walcott just stops once he has a couple of failed attempts.

  28. stevepalmer1 says:

Terry, can understand where your coming from, but good footballers can play anywhere not all of them are perfect but if you play a certain position for as long as Theo has you should understand what the job entails, i agree with you Theo is not a natural winger but he could be if he put his mind to it, Jenkinson is starting to show what a useful player he can be for us he will play anywhere the manager puts him that is because he wants to play he is a hundred percent commited thats why he gets hurt but when he comes back he will carry on regardless yes he still has lots of edges that need shaveing off but he is a tryer and will feature for us for some time, Theo can winge about his position but when we have others in the team that have proved their worth Theo will have to knuckle down or leave.

  29. stevepalmer1 says:

    morning rico,
can you honestly see wenger leaveing Van persie out for ten games to see if theo can make it, yes it would prove weter theo has got it or not but what if he hasn’t

  30. terry says:

“Walcott just stops once he has a couple of failed attempts”
i agree to wht you say that he stops after a couple of failed attempts and i think that is all to self confidence and mental strength that arsene keeps talking about. If some how, he could get some confidence and keep trying to reach the next level i think he could be something special. I have my hopes on theo but he needs toimprove with his decision making / his mentality. But for me he is an out and out striker and he will gain confidence by scoring goals and if he plays as a striker he will get goals. he is what 22-23 now he has a lot to learn and a long way to go.

  31. rico says:

i guess what i’m saying is theo admits he is a cack winger, so if he turns out to be a cack striker then sell him but i still believe he has it in him to score many goals, if he plays more central…

  32. stevepalmer1 says:

Sorry rico i miss understood, when Theo first came people put him down to takeover from Henry, but i don’t think Theo has shown enough to warrent a place up front. he is not an Henry sadly

  33. stevepalmer1 says:

Oddly enough i liked Vella, if he hadn;t shown such a likeing for the fairer sex he may of been banging goals in for us

  34. rico says:

thats half the problem imho, theo was labelled, he had so much to live up yet why? he is theo not thierry…

he will always split opinions though but in a side that is creating little, scoring few other than rvp – he is no sorse than many others – maybe when everyone starts ticking, so will he….

yes gervinho had a good game on sunday – let’s hope it wasn’t a one off..

again i think its down to tactics, there are games when theo can do so much without trying, he keeps defences back in their own half because of his pace, and for the same reason he is marked by two oppo players in many games…

i know he isn’t playing well but i still think another manager would get a lot more from him than wenger is right now….

  35. TT says:

terry I don’t disagree with you that TW is a striker 1 and last but he still needs to put in a shift on the wing and prove he is capable of taking over the main striker position. I would love it if he would be able to at least emulate some of the work T Henry did. But the problem is we can not afford to put him up at the top for the extended time that is needed to get him to a top level or even just to find out if he can. That’s why I hope he wakes up, starts picking him self up and tearing the opposition defenses a new one! But he needs to do that on the wing first.

  36. stevepalmer1 says:

Maybe your right rico, we’ll have to wait and see.But in all honesty i don’t see Theo as a saviour no matter how long we wait.

  37. rico says:

Like I said Steve, he’ll always divide fans, but i agree with what TT says too, just because he isn’t doing very well, he could certainly get off his butt and get a bit more involved in matches and not let his head go down so early….

He gives up to quickly when things are going wrong…

I blame Sven…. He made Theo think he’d made it, little did he know he was nowhere near….

  38. stevepalmer1 says:

I know this will sound negative and you know what i think of that but has anybody noticed that when we hit a long high forward pass how many times have our players actually got a head on the ball they all jump and duck the ball and no one has said about it or is it just me.

  39. rico says:

That’s not being negative Steve, it’s true – we used to be the same when defending too – long gone have the days of Paddy and Petit winning everything aerial in midfield…

As for the forwards, do they know how to use their heads 😉

  40. Micko says:

rico, for what its worth it was wenger who recommended sven to take walcott to the world cup, it was all over the tv and papers at the time, it was a bit of a strange one.
SteveP, the last striker we had who was great at getting his head to the ball first, holding it up and taking pressure off the team was alan smudger smith, he also chipped in with a lot of goals, we haven’t had a player like him for quite a while now.

  41. stevepalmer1 says:

sorry Micko had to go out, yeh smudge did have a handy head as you say, mind you TV can be handy at times as well and the sackman has been poor at six ft six you would expect him to get his head on a ball now and again complete waste of time him going up

  42. stevepalmer1 says:

I must admit Micko i never understood the decision to take Theo at that time as i remember he hadn’t kicked a ball in anger for us either.

  43. stevepalmer1 says:

Aparently this is the squad for tonights game
    Lukasz Fabianski
    Vito Mannone
    Sebastien Squillaci
    Thomas Vermaelen
    Andrey Arshavin
    Emmanuel Frimpong
    Yossi Benayoun
    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
    Francis Coquelin
    Ryo
    Ju Young Park
    Nico Yennaris
    Ignasi Miquel
    Jernade Meade
    Oguzhan Ozyakup
    Sanchez Watt
    Chuks Aneke
    Daniel Boateng
should see some new faces tonight, Wenger needs to be on his toes. Pat can sit this one out.

  44. agirlagunner says:

Boo! I hope our boys are up for it; Bolton are not to be underestimated. Keep on building upon our recent good results.

As for Theo… He can be brilliant; but its starts and stops for him, really. And he overstays the ‘stops’ phase of it. Shame.

  45. stevepalmer1 says:

Hi Agag, as you say theo is a bit of a stop starter but he could have a full stop tonight as his name is on the rested list who’s your captain tonight Agag Alex or Thomas or have you a crafty favorite

  46. agirlagunner says:

Hello, Steve. TV5!! It would be a nice welcome for him. But I was really happy Song took the armband the last time. I saw an interview where he said he would cry if he had to leave AFC. He’s no Na$ti or Clicky, our Song. 😉

  47. stevepalmer1 says:

Thats my favorite as well Agag, TV will be hard pushed to make the whole game, and Arsene seems to favour Song, and thats where our captain should operate from. still hot where you are you lucky person

  48. agirlagunner says:

It would be such a relief to see TV actually play again and regain match-fitness. I hope this is not one of those recurring injuries. 🙁

The weather has cleared here; it’s lovely again. 🙂 Not the place for those who can’t stand humidity though. Gone cold where you are?

  49. stevepalmer1 says:

Cooler and a few showers but still good for this time of year, TV has had a bad couple of years injury wise Agag he needs a break and a good run the same as us, and we can start to relax and enjoy the game again, not everyone is a superstar but we still have a decent squad and i am still optimistic that we can battle it out for all the top prizes, with United getting hammered shows just what a precarious league we are in. Even the press have left us alone for a while.

  50. agirlagunner says:

With some astute signings in January (fingers crossed); RvP signing a contract extension; our squad going without any serious injuries; heck, even the return of Diaby, we’ll still secure a place in the top 4.

I think we have a good chance of winning against the chavs. They are an aging lot, and well, Drogba, at least is suspended. Torres hasn’t been exactly on scintillating form, and I hope he isn’t when we play them.

  51. stevepalmer1 says:

Our gates are down on recent times Agag, some supporters are still not complettly happy with all things Arsenal, but if our change in form has anything to go by it won’t be too long before we are at least back in the top four. Arsenal fans are used to being up among the leaders and get very down when we fall down the league, but with teams like United loseing by so many sh ows that not all is well even in the champions camp, supporters enthusiasm goes up as the team move up the table and although i don’t see all our problems are over we can still look forward to the return of injured players that can only make the squad stronger . Hopefull a good return for TV5 and then look forward to Sags and Jack, Jenks won’t be long and Gibbo too,. I look forward to the time we have a full squad to pick from, and i reckon we have a team to challenge any of them, that when i believe we will see Arsenal at its best.

  52. rico says:

Hi Micko, so it’s Wenger’s fault for recomening him and Sven’s for taking him, but worse still, not playing him… 😉

    Afternoon 🙂

  53. stevepalmer1 says:

Good point rico, why wenger recomended a boy not even used in the Arsenal full team, and Sven taking him and not playing him is a mystery i must admit, the worst part about it all is that it stopped an English striker that was in form from playing and helping his country no wonder Sven went.

  54. rico says:

I wondered if it was him or Defoe Steve, either way, bloody crazy decision by both managers….

So, with the squad know for definate, pick the team to start shall we….

  55. stevepalmer1 says:

Wenger allways baffles me with his selection in the Carling cup rico so i will go with
    Mannone
    coquelin
    sqill
    vermin
    Miquel
    frimp
    Song
    Benny
    Park
    OX
    ryo

  56. devilgunner says:

Team in full: Fabianski, Yennaris, Squillaci, Vermaelen, Miquel, Frimpong, Coquelin, Benayoun, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arshavin, Park.

Substitutes: Mannone, Meade, Boateng, Ozyakup, Aneke, Ryo, Watt

  57. devilgunner says:

I will keep you all posted guys and chicks…..but with a three minute delay since here we get it a bit later than the proper time.

  58. rico says:

Steve – i’d be cheating to suggest my side now 😉

Can you believe, i signed up for a streaming season plan today, and they are not showing our game 😮

  59. devilgunner says:

Nearly 15 minutes gone and no shot on goal. Just two corners in our favour. Both teams still have to find some rythm. Game is shared evenly but no seat edge situations yet

  60. devilgunner says:

Steve and Rico…..it would be nice to see Aldershot 9 Manure 1. but I guess we’ll hace to settle for another 6-1 victory. lol

  61. rico says:

Steve, it would be if we played them too, maybe….

devil – all possesion and no chnaces but Bolton have had one?

😛 re the 9-1 – now that would be something worth having a glass of bubbly over….

  62. rico says:

Oh deep joy, now we all know why we miss Squilli so much!

Can’t even replace him, no central defender on the bench, unless AW has a shuffle around with his young pack….

  63. devilgunner says:

As usual we are racking up the statistics….better possession more shots more corners

Park has already had 3 shots on today

  64. rico says:

what i don’t get Steve is how on CL night, sky can cover every game and we choose on the ‘red button’ – why can’t they do the same for the cups??

    grrrr

  65. rico says:

exactly steve – but, if it means we are kept out of the limelight and pounce when least expected – then who gives a flying … one 😉

  66. stevepalmer1 says:

keep up the good work devil, even my internet connection went down for five minutes am pulling my hair out

  67. goonster says:

What’s with our former players always scoring against us? You ll never see an ex united player scoring against his old team. Last week it was larson…now muamba! God help us. Evening guys.

  68. devilgunner says:

AA scored and made another. He drives from the DB10 position which is his natural position. Why does nt Arsene play him in the hole instead of on the wing???

  69. goonster says:

JM steve rico…come on guys update me on the current state of play. What is the score? Have scored another?

  70. stevepalmer1 says:

they scored first Muamba then arshaven then Park your bus the only one in the know is comentator Devil but i think he’s tireing

  71. goonster says:

oh ok..thanks JM. really wish andrey can score more goals to give wenger something to think about when making up his mind on who starts

  72. devilgunner says:

They are pressing hard for an equaliser

Our lads are still young regarding physical endurance

Ryo on for Oxo and Ozyakup on for Frimps

  73. devilgunner says:

not exactly tiring mate…..its that the tv is in one room and the computer is in another. My wife thinks I am crazy darting between one room and the next

  74. goonster says:

Steve I heard wenger wants to send a couple of players on loan to the lowe division. Hope he sends ryo too but to a premier league team. He needs games and bolton could provide the platform.

  75. devilgunner says:

Coming to think of it….why not get CAhill in January and lend them Miguel, Squillaci (AFC to pay his wages), Ryo and Afobe???

  76. devilgunner says:

Fit as me….??? Not with all the body aches I have mate. Its that I have been sick again and feel that I have been beaten by a saucepan

  77. devilgunner says:

The team has gone to 4-5-1 to protect the lead and park is the lone striker.

But its allowing Bolton to attack us……we need to keep them on the backfoot but the team is yuoung and dont have that strength

Only 3 minutes left for the final whistle

  78. devilgunner says:

Yesssssssssssssssssssssss. We are in the hat for the next round

    cheeeeerrrrriooooo guys and chicks

    Off to kiss the pillow

  79. rico says:

You lot are crazy, but bloomin funny…

I’m off too guys, thanks for the updates devil..

    Nighty Night guys…..

Be good, and be happy eh…..

    Morning all guys and chicks.

Good Win yesterday. Shows we do have strength in depth

Seems as if TV05 got injured again…..this time with a calf strain. That is nothing. It is just tightness of the muscle due to lack of activity in the past year and a quarter. So the muscle needs to get back to its normal activity. He will be short for the game vs the chavs but might be a contender for the next game.

A good reason for AW not to rush TV05 immediately and have healthy competition for places. Suddenly for the defence we seem to have 3 players for every position

Right Back……Sagna, Jenkinson, Djourou. (Yennaris is solid but still very raw)
    Left Back……..Santos, Gibbs, Miguel.
Centrebacks…Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Djourou, Squillaci, Miguel. ~(Boateng good but still very raw.)

If that is a crisis then I am really in crisis.
