Should Arsene make summer signings? Will Jackson Martínez be one of them….

Morning all.

We have an important fixture tomorrow, a win will see us into the quarter finals but a loss will be a disaster imo. Any confidence will be battered and our customary fourth spot could seriously be under threat. To be fair, it already is with so many sides all looking like they could beat us to it this year.

That’s all for tomorrow and as much as Arsene Wenger has said he will take the fixture very seriously as he really wants us to win the FA Cup, he’s also hinted at a bit of rotation.

Talking of Arsene Wenger, I hope by the time he departs, he’s won a couple more trophies but to do so, the team needs new and different players. Tomas Rosicky isn’t getting any younger, neither is our club captain or vice captain and Mathieu Flamini fails to impress each time he plays. To move this team forward, the squad needs to be stronger and deeper so we need new faces brought in during the summer, together with one or two coming through the Academy.

So here’s the question, is Arsene Wenger the right manager to spend the transfer kitty and sign the players to make us much stronger or should he just carry on with who we have until he leaves?

My view is, he’s the manager right now and his job is to make sure we have a strong and deep squad and that means signing players we need in the transfer window, after all, if a player like Alexis Sanchez becomes available, would anyone really want our club to miss out, just because it’s Arsene in charge?

Not me….

No doubt Arsene Wenger’s tactics and leadership skills will continue to be called into question but as we saw at The Etihad, we as a team can be organised and disciplined. Our problem is, performances like that are too few and far between and whether that’s down to the manager or certain individuals not putting maxim effort in will always be another question which will divide opinion.

How many of us have said that if we had a squad full of players with Alexis Sanchez work ethic and ability, we’d win the league?

Unless Arsene Wenger plans to walk away in the summer and had the baton over to a younger manager, I hope he signs a few players in the summer to make us great again….

One player who Arsene Wenger has fuelled transfer speculation over is Jackson Martínez:

He has top physical strengths. Hugely efficient, he is the kind of player who can make room for himself in the box.

He could play in the Premier League because he has the body to make the difference. He uses it in a very intelligent way. Very short back lift and he’s a very good finisher.

He’s on the list of many clubs, you know that. He will be the next big transfer who will give a big smile to Pinto da Costa [Porto’s owner].

Jackson Martínez  has scored 85 goals in two-and-a-half seasons at Porto – that’s one heck of a return from a striker and the kind of return we could seriously do with but he’ll be 29 years old this year…..

Mind you, so will Ollie…..

That’s it for today, I’m off to find the postman……..

Rico, think you’ll find the postie hanging around Selhurst Park, looking to deliver something called a ‘goal’

Nice post and good morning y’all, again…

  2. Marinello says:

I agree Rico. If we do not beat Borough the old self confidence will drop even further.
I just never know which Arsenal team will turn up anymore. The rarity that was put out against City, or the one that lost to Spurs. How can a team change so much in terms of hard work, defending from the front, all helping each other out, to the one against the Spuds, where many player either froze, went missing or just appeared apathetic throughout the game.
We have a good chance of getting to the final again this year, but the team have to put in a shift and put in a few tackles that were missing against Spurs.
Borough will fancy there chances tomorrow, and we have to be prepared for a tight physical game.

    Thanks re the post Bt…

Spot on Marinello, like you, I never have a clue which side will turn up but when they all work hard together we are definitely much better but sometimes we just have too many passengers..

Wenger would never do a ‘Ferguson’ and leave us with a squad full of aging players who are lost without being told exactly what to do, if there are players that will improve the team he will buy them. Whether eveyone agrees on which players would improve us, that’s another issue.

I don’t watch the Portuguese league (I doubt many do) but Martinez has looked a little like a Championship kind of striker whenever I’ve seen him, he has the pace and power to bully them so can afford to miss chances as he’ll get plenty but when he steps up against better opposition that know how to deal with him, they dry up a little. Martinez is probably better than the Championship, but it’s the same principle.

Just between you and me. Was it Theo you were waitng to deliver, on the doorstep?

Happy Valentine’s Day to you all.

I’m still waiting for my card and bottle despite the fact that the postie has already been! Next year maybe?

  7. rico says:

Dick, just why I wrote the post really, I’m all for him refreshing the squad until he leaves, and keeping us up around the top. Not just drift away with a load of ageing players and end up being further down the league when the new guy arrives.

I was interested in what other fans views were….

Incidentally, I don’t think it’s work ethic that is the problem, but the confidence issues that we’ve had for the last few years manifest as a kind of dithering. Missing Arteta is hitting us pretty big in some of these games too, Coquelin will learn to control the game better with time.
