Seven wins from Eight, are we out of the slump?

Morning all,

Seven wins out of our last eight, does that mean we are out of the slump?

I would say no but we are getting better though. Our confidence is building and team spirit is improving but we are still a way off winning the league, FA cup or Carling Cup not to mention the Champions League!

The hard reality is that it may take a season or two to get over the loss of Fabregas, Na$ri and Clichy.

Yes we have brought replacements and given time some of them may go close to replacing these old players but that time is not here yet.

Our worst result for many years is still emblazoned in our minds, I know we had a lot of players missing but 8.2 is a drubbing however you dress it up. Since then we have gone on a little run and the teams we have beaten have troubles the same as us in one way or another, so we can’t start praising ourselves up until we inflict some damage to some of those teams at the top end of the table.

The teams above us are there for a reason, they have set targets for themselves that we must reach but have we got the team to do that?

I don’t know the answer this season, unlike previous ones when I have always thought that our team was good enough to compete with the best in our league. It’s hard to say just where we really are this season as we haven’t had all our best players playing at the same time yet. Injury or suspensions has rendered that question impossible to answer.

Supporters are more upbeat than they have been since the start of the season, seven wins out of the last eight seems to have lifted spirits but we are still not playing impressively. We still hold our breath when we face a free kick but thankfully the players have started to deal with these a little better and supporters may have started to fidget less in their seats but they still expect a calamity to happen any minute.

Dependability has gone out of the window and we have gone from confident side to a team that plays one game at a time.

Wenger has started to introduce his latest crop of youngsters and early signs look encouraging but whether he uses them in the first team remains to be seen.

Per Mertesacker has taken a while to fit in but now seems to be settled in and has started to form a good understanding with Kos.

Arteta, who many had thought was a replacement for Cesc, will never be as there is no replacement for our ex captain, he was a one-off and his pin point passes and defence splitting runs is now just a distant memory. He has done a good job and although he maybe guilty of holding the ball too long but when you have no one running for positions what do you do?

Santos has been used spasmodically but with Gibbs injured so often, he’ll feature more no doubt.

As for some of our longer term players, Mr ‘reliable’ Sagna, injured right now with a broken leg, Alex Song, Mr I’ll run through walls for you is still doing his best and Arshavin, who is not one of my favourites is starting to improve. Mind you, maybe playing him in his preferred position helps!

Robin Van Persie has been like a breath of fresh air, his fitness has improved and he has found the back of the net, enough said, I don’t want to jinx him.

Rosicky has done what he needs to do mostly good but not enough, Theo Walcott ‘I’m not a winger’; well his form has been dreadful! He runs around like a headless chicken, where he’s running to nobody knows. Having played as a winger for four years or so, he now thinks he might be a striker.

A striker he may be but he has a lot of competition and Ju Park has just thrown a spanner in Theo’s works and with Chamakh, Gervinho and not forgetting the Ox and Ryo all looking for a start, Theo may be better off staying on the wing.

Chesney seems to have cemented his place as our No1 goalkeeper and from what I have seen of him, he’s probably the best of the three.

Thomas Vermaelen is again like a new signing and supporters want him back but where to field him? Wenger will have to scratch his head and work that one out. Jack Wilshere has been out since the start of the season and I doubt we will see much of him, maybe the last couple of months.

Aaron Ramsey’s form has started to improve but I think he misses Jack and Chamakh, well he has a lot to do and if he doesn’t soon, I think he’ll be off. Frimpong is in there battling with Coquelin for a place in midfield but both will soon become a fixture I am sure.

We also cannot forget that Diaby is yet to feature this season.

There are more that have started waiting in the wings and from what I have seen or heard about them, it’s encouraging for the future of our club.

Chelsea on Saturday, how are we going to do against a top team?

This is where we see if the team’s confidence is high enough to do battle and come out on top.

We will have to wait and see but with our old nemesis Drogba suspended our chances are far better. Chelsea have an ageing team and reading between the lines not all is well in their camp, you can throw money about all you like but ageing players mean slower players, we have to run them ragged.

I believe we will.

    Morning all, good post Steve..

Some will think we are over the worst I am sure, not me though, tomorrow will be a huge test and we’ll know more but if even if we win, i won’t be convinced. in and go on a good run until Christmas then maybe…

I think we have steadied but like you say in the post, we are far from being a trophy winning side

  2. devilgunner says:

    Good morning guys and chicks.

Good post and valid points Steve. But I am not entirely convinced. The team has yet to gel together. We have gone from a collection of individuals to gelling together as different parts (departments), however we still have to gell as a one unit. We are still not yet a team. The defence is gelling together, although constant changing is hindering it a bit. The midfield trio are gelling together while 2/3 of the attack is there. But there is still something missing between defence and midfield, between midfield and attack. The three departments are yet to be linked.

This takes time. And we are winning. Imagine what would happen if we gel as one unit. In the meantime we can expect hiccups and the odd defeat. But we are getting there.

Personally its not a run which will convince me. It needs to be a cup. Seeing our captain holding aloft a trophy will convince us that this team can do it. Like 1989…….Anfield convinced everyone that that team could go places.

    Morning devil

A long winning run and a trophy at the end of the season and i’ll be happy and I don’t care which one 😉

It’s same old though for me, if we are up around the top four at the end of the year, we’ll see just how ambitions Stan and his merrymen are, just two players in the jan window ould see us finally brak our trophy drought…

  4. devilgunner says:

BUT WHY THE HELL ARE WE SPEAKING ABOUT THE TOP FOUR???

    I. W.A.N.T. A. T.R.O.P.H.Y.

    By hook or by crook.

  5. devilgunner says:

At the end of the day its 11 vs 11 not us vs the money of the sheik or the oligarch.

Put GG or Mourinho in charge and we will soon have a defensive dour team. GG never cared for primadonnas……hell Liverpool were the Shitty of today. We went there and managed to pull off a result that the Liverpool fans still squirm and have to get over it when you mention it to them. And it was no flash in the pan since two years later GG’s team was away from being the first invincibles by a whisker.

ITS THE FIRE IN THE BELLY WHICH COUNTS. HOW MANY OF OUR PLAYERS HAVE BALL???

THAT IS WHAT WE HAVE TO ASK.

  6. rico says:

Hi af – top 3 would be better and a cup…

i’m talking about at the end of the year being in the top devil, and push off from there, and getting a couple of players in the jan window…

  7. devilgunner says:

And I do not care if we win all the games 1-0 with dour defensive displays that put everyone to sleep.

  8. TT says:

Agree that we are not out of the hole yet but we are showing signs that we are on our way again. Not sure though that it will take us as long as Steve thinks to get over Cesc and Na$ri. If we change our system a bit, to suit our current players, there is no reason why we can not grab a cup this season.

There are signs that 3 out of the 4 top teams are vulnerable to some extent and that leaves Man shitty as the top dog. To catch shitty would take a total change in wage approach and expenditure which we are never going to see under Wenger or Stan. Therefore the second place is our best hope and we just might get there sooner than we think…

  9. devilgunner says:

    No TT……I do not agree.

Get 22 players with the attitude of Roy Keane or PV04 or Petit or Adams or Bould and Shitty can throw all the money in the world. They would soon be put into their place.

Jenks has the heart and will. He supports Arsenal. Ok he is a bit lacking in experience but he makes up for it through desire and attitude. What would you prefer……a moody Arshavin or a ruthless Drogba. And to think we could have got him for a few thousands. Makes your blood boil.

  10. devilgunner says:

Make us difficult to beat first. Shut up shop. Make the team a fortress. Winning will take care of itself.

Wenger said that he and the players were duty bound towards the supporters to play good stylish football. How the hell no one ever told him that he and the players were duty bound to the supporters, especially those who travel to away games to get the right results and at the end of the season win a cup is beyond me.

  11. TT says:

devilgunner the problem with your theory is Mancini along with that the time of the mentioned players has come and gone, shear willpower will not win us another title. Mancini is a better manager than many give him credit for and he is a strong character and a proven winner as a player. He knows exactly what needs to be done and with Players like De Jung and Toure Barry and many more that are not afraid to put the boot in and if he needs more he’ll just go out and buy 10 more than you have so that will never work.

We need players that can break teams down on their own. Henry and Bergkamp did that for us and two players like that with a top defense and goalie plus a creative midfield and we would be competing again for the top price.

  12. rico says:

devil – it is 11 v 11 but it’s about the subs too – look who Citeh have on their bench compared to ours, similar can be said for the chavs and manure too…

  13. devilgunner says:

There is a story which has always fascinated me since I was a kid.

Little Sam was an intelligent boy. All the older boys used to make fun of him but little Sam remained humble and never got angry. After some years when Sam was around 30 years old he met one of the boys who used to make fun of him.

After some time talking together the other man told him “You have changed. You were so simple that it is very hard to imagine that now you are a company director who is renowned for making crucial decisions and is never afraid to be ruthless.”

Sam replied “what makes you think I was so simple??”

The other said “Well when we used to show you a £2 note and a 50p you always took the 50p. You never took the £2. We used to laugh at you a lot.”

Sam quietly asked “Do you remember how many times did you use to do that?”

The other said “We did it around once every fortnight for around 5 years.”

Sam said “Had I taken the £2 note that would have been the end of it. I would not have taken any more money. But if was so simple than you were stupid enough not to realise that over 5 years I managed to take £65 off you lot instead of just £2 once.”

Now substitute the £2 for the Champions league (Wenger’s obsession) and the 50p for the FA Cup and League Cup. And imagine if we won just one of the latter cups every year between 2006 and now or at least once every 2 years. Would we supporters have been happy??

I for once would have been very happy to have seen Thierry, Gallas and Fabregas holding a cup or two aloft, whether they were the FA Cup or the League Cup.

  14. devilgunner says:

Oh yes I agree about the subs bench. But if on the subs bench we had fire and balls (and not a clown like Eboue, or a megalomaniac like Bendtner) it would still not matter.

TT, I have been following Mancini for much more than you I presume…..since I see Italian football on a daily basis here. And that is the problem with Arsene. Was he a winner as a player?? No he was not.

  15. boyo says:

    @devilgunner

Those players you name all have great attitudes but they were all great players!! Its not easy to find great skilled players who are that tough mentally!!

Fans need to stop complaining that they demand trophy’s- If we dont get one will you stop supporting? Maybe you should enjoy Man C they will buy you a trophy and you wont need to boo and heckle their manager and players who are doing all they can!

  16. rico says:

    I like that devil…

I asked a question here last season when we were still in all four competitions, ‘if we had to sacrice one, which would be your choice’ – mine was the CL..

Get into the top four yes, take the money that comes with CL qualification but i’d much rather see us win something in the domestic league – CL is a huge luck of the draw.

Liverpool won it a few years back, but i bet they’d swap it for the PL crown…..

  17. devilgunner says:

Boyo…….I have been supporting Arsenal since 1975. Dad has been an Arsenal supporter since 1948. And Grandpa since 1925. And Great Grandpa since 1895. The first thing you get to learn in my family is not to say the words ‘Ma’ or ‘Pa’. Its…..ARSENAL.

AK can be a great witness to what I have said.

Bould, Dixon, Winterburn, Keane, all came from the lower divisions. Much like Jenks. PV04 came from the Milan reserves while Petit was rotting away as a centrehalf at Monaco. How much did they cost?? certainly not 17 million like Arshavin.

  18. devilgunner says:

And by the way…….My dad and I have a collection of the Arsenal Home programmes since 1970. By any chance, how old are you and how many home programmes or Annuals do you have???

  19. rico says:

    Morning TT, alan and boyo…

Cesc is a tough one to replace but his best days for us were gone, his fitness and leadership were questionable.

Na$ri, nah, Gervinho is just starting to find the pace of the PL and if last Sunday’s display is a sign of what we are in for this season, then we have more than replaced him already imho.. Let’s not forget that Nasri fade after Christmas…. He was dire…

alan, can’t see wenger playing 2 against the chavs sadly…

  20. rico says:

TT – added to that it seems he is slowly sorting out Ballotelli too.. ok, he lost it wit Tevez though but they will just offload him in Jan….

    Ruthless….

  21. henryguna says:

my very concern is y winger wud leav such a talent lyk jy park on d bench to rot, he shud try n convert him to 8 along side vp who has bin performing miracle now, and stat oc instead of waterlogd brain walcot who tinks we are in 4 a sprint race dn bring him ln like 2o to go to race tru chealrea difence wen there legs ar becoming weak

  22. TT says:

I watched a lot of Mancini years back though not as much as you and he was a class player, one of my favorites. And yes Wenger was never a winner as a player but as a coach, especially at the start he was super for Arsenal but the problem I have with him is that he has to much influence at the club and how it’s run. Can you imagine Mancini being asked what the ticket prices should be!?

The wage structure is of his design and the over 30 policy also, at least he seams to be easing up on the over 30 policy a bit but years to late for me.

Wenger’s policy at the start increased the carer of our back 4 by years but he never went out and replaced them properly as a unit. OK the invincible s defense was good but not a patch on Adams Dixon Bould Winterburn and Keown.

He seams to have some dislike to very strong caracters that are not afragtd to speak up and to tear an under performing player a new back passage.

When that sorry joke of a footballer Trarore got sent of needlessly for QPR the manager screamed at him as he went off that he was a disgrace and he would fine him as much as he could. Why don’t we discipline our players when they do something like that? Anyone think the ban Song got for his petulant stamp will deter him from doing so again and leaving us short?

  23. Erick says:

    Howdy folks,

Hope you are all good…just a quick one today, lets support the team, yes we are not the best squad in the pl but you would be surprised what togetherness would do……We have to add quality in January but lets back what we have.

    Bring on Chelsea

  24. rico says:

Hi hg – i think w’ll soon see more of Park..

Howdy Erick, indeed, bring em on, i think we’ll get something form the game..

  25. TT says:

If you are referring to me about the programs devilgunner then none I always give them away when I go to matches, if I started another collection the other half would kill me 😉 besides I live in Ireland so I only get to a handful of games 🙁

  26. Erick says:

I think we can do a double on the Chavs no Drogba who I must say has been great when playing against us. Think Park should get more games too he seems the ral deal and thank God he wants to shoot outside the box 🙂

  27. devilgunner says:

no mate…….its Boyo I am referring to. My blood boils over when someone tells me to support another club.

At the moment I am listening to some Celtic/Irish music TT. Its wonderfully relaxing.

  28. TT says:

That is the favorite saying of AKB devilgunner….go and support someone else. Personally I think the most loyal of the fans are those that question the current board/owner/manager and the direction they are taking the club in but go out and sing their lungs out every game to support the TEAM.

  29. rico says:

    no worries devil 😉

programmes, one day’s reading another days chip paper 😉 😉

Off to walk the Mutley, back in a bit…

  30. devilgunner says:

    Muttley???????

    Tiihhhhiiiihhhhhiiiiiiihhhhhiiiihhhhhiiiiiiiiiii.

Chip paper?? Say that to Pa and he will go up like a volcano. They are all hard binded yearly.

  31. devilgunner says:

Regarding the 7 wins out of 8 I would consider we have got a good team when we do it only in the league……imagine that around 7 straight wins after the scum game

  32. Nedox says:

Mornin ladies..good post steve, some valid points there. Buh i think Mert did well ryt from the start.

I was almost moved to tears when i watched a clip of ‘best fabregas at arsenal’..NO ONE has d kind of eye he has for a pass! And Theo is massively suffering from that. The worst is that arteta,9 outta 10 wont try a defence splitting pass! Wilshere maybe, buh he is far from being fit. Just sayin…

  33. Micko says:

Ha, devil listens to daniel o’donnell in the mornings.

This season has been completely different to any other under wenger and thats why i believe for the first time he actually will be judged in may, if he strengthens with a couple of quality players in january we have a chance of finishing in the top four, its his call, I don’t believe any of the speil that comes out of gazidas’s mouth saying we can cope without champions league football, all the board seem to do these days is contradict each other.

  34. devilgunner says:

Irish/Celtic music is much more than O’Donell mate. Especially the Irish guitar and harp instrumental music. I am not Irish, not even English……..yet your history, especially the period between 300AD to 1700AD is fascinating.

Seems as if you have lost a lot of your English culture lately.

  35. goonster says:

Morning guys….DG did you say GG almost went the entire season without losing a game? When was that? Which means we coulda done it twice? Heavy!

  36. devilgunner says:

1991. We lost to the chavs when they were still scraping pennies and had Kerry Dixon. And we lost 2-1 only at stamford bridge. And Alan Smith scored a hat-trick vs Manure. That was a great season to be in. Surpassed only by 1989 and 2004.

  37. devilgunner says:

And I tell you mate……if someone tells me that we have been without a cup for 6 years but then do it again I would have it in a heartbeat. I do not want Arsenal to dominate like Manure do, or Liverpool did. All I want is for Arsenal to win around 2 to 3 leagues and around 3 to 4 knockout cups every ten years and be happy. Just that. That would be around 7 trophies per decade.

  38. rico says:

Afternoon guys, don’t know about Mutley exhausted, I am 😛

devil, i was being ironic about the programes as was Micko re DD 😉

DD = Double Diamond doesn’t it, although most of you are probably too young to remember that 😉

  39. goonster says:

Afternoon rico….looking forward to tomorrow ain’t ya? Like I said yesterday I believe we ll come away with a result. Its about time we beat a top four team away. If our players turn up I believe we ll win. Hope they do though. Cause like steve said this chav team is aging we can take them.gervinho ll be a handful for anyone we just need theo or whomever wenger chooses to be on the sane wavelength. DG I ll take that drink now.

  40. rico says:

Hi goonster, yep, i’m really lookig forward to the game and as you say, IF the team turn up wanting to play well and fight for the win, i think we’ll get at least a draw….

  41. goonster says:

I see us getting all three points rico luiz and terry ll be giving a torrid time by robin and ivanovic ll be sent off. You heard it here first. He ll be tugging on gervinho all day long till the ref ll have no choice than to send him off. Hope wenger starts with kozzer on the right than JD. We can win this guys. The omens are right for a top four win away from home. COYGS come on! Yeeeeeaaaah.

  42. oliver says:

morning all, i agree that we are not there yet, although that has not prevented dot com from rolling out the usual “we can…” headlines…

chelsea will be a big test. they have their issues, sure, and i think they are in transition with avb right now, but are still better placed than us at the moment, and have a squad core who have won and are accustomed to winning…they have had our number over the past few years as well…

even if we lose, as long as we play decently, i don’t think it will be cause for alarm. at the moment, we are beating the teams we are supposed to beat, so as long as we keep doing that, we should be able to keep momentum up…even if we started the season well and were already in the top four, we would probably not be expected to win tomorrow’s fixture. if we can turn them over, that will definitely be a statement of intent. if we don’t, as long as we put in a reasonably good performance, it shouldn’t be cause for alarm.

  43. Micko says:

In fairness to devil, my history is pretty patchy, the only thing I remember learning about at school was Henry VIII and his six knives.
Stamford bridge hasn’t been a happy hunting ground lately, a draw would do me, 1-1.

  44. devilgunner says:

Micko…..thank God you are hundreds of miles away. lol 🙂

Just read that Fabregas has alerted Guardiola how much has Theo improved. Maybe he will alert him also how much Bendtner, Almunia, Denilson and Squillaci have improved. Maybe they will fetch something for the good of the club.

  45. goonster says:

Hi Oliver yeah we are not there yet neither is chelsea. We need to hit the ground running. Song has to be massive tomorrow if we are to get anything of the chavs. He needs to cut out his marauding runs into the enemy territory. Mata and sturridge are slippery characters. Keep the two quiet and you ll cut out the supply route to torres. Theo needs to step up or ship out. We need all our big players to be firing soon.

  46. rico says:

depends who the ref is goonster but you could be right, if it’s Webb, he won’t ant the Chavs to win 😉

  47. rico says:

    Hi oliver

i think you and i have said that bfore, sometimes the performance is more important than the result in a funny kind of way – if go there, get rolled over easily, that will be very damaging…

Top peformance and a point would do for me right now, anything more would be awesome…

  48. rico says:

    Micko ‘six knives’ 😆

I not joining in on this one, my history knowledge extends back to yesterday….. and that’s about it

  49. Joaquim Moreira says:

…”He runs around like a headless chicken, where he’s running to nobody knows.
    Touché!
It’s what I’m saying a long time ago.
Commit to the match tomorrow. Any important news?

  50. devilgunner says:

Oui Rico. Six KNIVES. Maybe he should have cut off their tongue instead of their head………maybe that is why he wanted to get rid of them wives.

  51. oliver says:

morning gs and rico…i am interested to see how the team and bench look. for me, ju has already done enough to replace chamakh – at least for now. and theo’s recent run of poor performances has me wondering if he should even start tomorrow…

unless someone is covering up the extent of tv’s “tightness” from tuesday, i am sure he will start. if so, i would move kos to rb (assuming jenks is not yet fit) ahead of jd, who has peformed better than i expected in that slot. arsene has a presser today, so i imagine will get a better picture idea of what tomorrow’s lineup will resemble…

  52. rico says:

Hi JM, Wenger is waiting on TV, he may not be included in the side…

    devil, i think i’ll stick to Arsenal… 😉

  53. goonster says:

Hopefully its not webb rico. We can win this you guys. I ve seen the chavs a couple of times this season. They are a patchy bunch. Take mata out of the equation and they are very “ordinary”. Don’t forget drogba isn’t playing so threat from set piece is minimized. 2:1 to the arsenal with gervinho having a blinder.

  54. devilgunner says:

Whoever he is mates I hope he has DUMBO like ears to hear whatever John Terry has to say. Especially to Gervinho, Song, Theo……or Park.

  55. devilgunner says:

See you mates. Off to my in-laws and out of my house for the first time since last Friday.

Cheers to all of you. Enjoy

  56. goonster says:

I don’t know rico…I just don’t like him…in fact I don’t I like any english referee! They all wear manure jerseys underneath their uniforms. I hate howard webb the most!

  57. Micko says:

Shame we have to talk about the referee’s but I suppose the more controversy that follows them around the more supermarkets they get to open, that’s why it’s always funny to see a ref fall on their arse every now and again, just picturing the di canio incident a few years back still has me in stitches when i think about it.

  58. Micko says:

Dunno JM, probably won’t know till the morning, as long as he doesn’t have a brown paper bag tucked under his arm we should be okay.

  59. goonster says:

Andre mariner yeah….its 3 points to the boys in red. Evening people just heading to the pub with a some friends. Its Friday guys so I bid you all a good night and here’s hoping we thump the chavs tomorrow. Goodnight guys.

  60. stevepalmer1 says:

    Evening all.
Rico, sorry to leave you with it all, didn’t realise that you had posted this one, Been fitting a new shed door, took me all day, not a spare minute to turn my putor on, so i apologise, and to all HH regulars and guests not that i know what i’m talking about, Ricolicious is the Kiddie for that.

  61. allezkev says:

Walcott had a good game at the Bridge last season.
If the Chavs defence lacks something, it’s pace.
No Boswingha might be as damaging as no Drogba?

Is that right Oliver, AFC.Com were giving it the biggun.
Don’t those prats ever learn. Why don’t they just keep their big stupid gobs firmly closed. I despair…!

  62. allezkev says:

    Evening Steve. Great post mate.
I think we’re closer to having some ‘good times’ than you suggest.
The key is holding onto our players.
You’ll never build a winning squad if your losing a couple of key componants every summer.
We’ve got Verm. Now we need to secure Theo RVP & the other one, whose name escapes me.

  63. rico says:

    Have a good one goonster…

    Evening AK and Steve

AK, i knew you sould remember DD in it’s finest 🙂

Steve – I am the one that’s sorry, long story but you saved my day thank you….

  64. rico says:

Theo is a cert for tomorrow, he and RvP will be the first two on Wengers sheet – this is the perfect game for him and he can’t show up, i don’t know when he will…..

  65. allezkev says:

But the bench could be interesting & who comes off of it.
Don’t be suprised if Park & Ryo are on it and make cameo appearances.
As i said. The Chavs lack pace.

  66. stevepalmer1 says:

Thanks AK, I honestly don’t think we have a bad squad, and as you say we don’t want to lose anybody,I watched the french game again last night and we were crap, but watched the Sunderland game and the difference was amazeing, we are definitly improveing.
Cheers rico, i can tell you a long story about a door i can tell ya ha ha
