Santi Cazorla – the five minute wonder.

Morning all.

Well actually, Santi Cazorla was a four minute wonder yesterday. Two goals in the same amount of time made sure that we not only secured all three points but remain top of the Premier League as well.

I haven’t been lucky enough to see the game, just a stream with adverts stuck in the middle and then just highlights but here’s my best attempt at a write up…

We started the far better side and had chances to score. Giroud scuffed a shot over, Cazorla saw a shot blocked and Gnabry saw his chance go wide but our best chance was within the first five minutes when Wilshere and Ozil played a one-two and the little maestro looked like he had scored as his shot beat Maarten Stekelenburg but Brede Hangeland was there on the line to save Fulham.

Yet again we had plenty of the ball but as the first half went on and we failed to score, Fulham started to sneak into the match.

Just before the half hour, Sagna had to head a chance from Berbatov away at the far post and the ball found it’s way to Sidwell who belted his shot on goal. But for a good save by Szczesny, the visitors would have gone 1-0 up.

We had the next opportunity when a Santi Cazorla free-kick was deflected to Sagna, he fired a shot in but Stekelenburg again saved well.

Szczesny, for the second time in the first half, was quick off his line to take the ball from an oncoming Fulham player in a dangerous area.

That was it for the first half.

The second half saw an early chance go to Hangeland but his headed was cleared. Gnaby tested their keeper with a stinging shot and then Sagna had a chance cleared off the line and as the rebound fell to Laurent Koscielny, well he blasted his effort wide…

Then came the magical four minutes.

Cazorla had the ball on the left, he played it to Giroud just outside the area then his pass went to Jack Wilshere who was on the   edge of the box on the left. Jackie boy played in a low cross and there was our little Spanish midfielder to fire home.

1-0

Just like against Aston Villa, we score one, we get two and it was the Spaniard to double his tally. Monreal was the provider this time from the left – he crossed, Santi controlled and then off into the back of the net went the ball….

Serge Gnabry was the first replaced, and on hi place came Lukas Podolski. I love that, one German off and another on, can’t get enough of them in this current side imho.

Podolski very nearly made the change count but Stekelenburg’s stunning save stood in his way. Super shot by our man, really good save by theirs….

Matt Le Tissier shouted ‘penalty for Fulham’ towards the end…

The ref clearly thought otherwise…..

Game over, no additional injuries, three points on the board and we’re still top of the league….

A good day?

It sure was for the players and here’s a few comments they left on Twitter thanks to fellow Arsenal website, Arsenal station.

That’s your lot for today……

f* it: we should just give him his 3 yrs. … unless wenger sees other option thats ready and raring to go – i havent heard of such an option.

  2. rico says:

atomic, agree, just give the guy 3 years and be done with it…

We don’t have anyone else in the squad who is at his level right now…

  3. Scott from Oz says:

    Morning all.
Top of the league, and still people all over the internet whine.
    Why?
I remember 18 months ago we were playing pretty and dropping points…people complained.
Now we are winning and playing ugly….people complain.
    Might as well laugh 🙂
    Top of the league.
4 words we should all remember, because it has been a while 🙂

  4. southyorkshiregunner says:

A fine result yesterday. The first half could be summed up in a Wengeresque cliche – ‘We played with the hadbrake on’.
The second half we were unlucky not to have added several more goals. Like I said, a fine result.

The plus point for me was that Gnabry looks like he’s gaining confidence and to keep Podolski out of the side on merit says everything. The minus point was that Park was on the bench, which dispells everything that Wenger said afterwards about a world class bench. It isn’t.
If Sagna goes we are looking at Jenkinson. I like Jenkinson, but he is in no way ready to be first choice right back. I can see the logic with a 2-year extension and I can see the logic in supporters stating to give him what he wants in a 3-year extension, and looking at the back-up, I can see why.

  5. rico says:

I don’t know Scott, we’ve been saying ‘Top of the league’ for a while now 😉

Get a striker and make sure we stay there….

  6. rico says:

    Spot on re Park Syg.

I’m a Jenks fan too but as you say, he’s not quite ready yet but I do think he gets better when he gets a run of games… Otherwise he always seems to look rusty..

  7. rotterdam gunner says:

if some one deserved long deal should be sagna,3 years he should get 4 years deal, he stuck with us when fab4,nasri clichy v,persie all left while he was one of the best RB in the world, loyalty we should reward hem for hes loyalty, mr wenger.

  8. stevepalmer1 says:

I watched the game on a Dutch Gooners stream and would just like to thank him 🙂
I also had Football Focus on the tv and what i found anoying was that Pundits were screaming goal at Arsenal, and telling me who scored while my stream was still playing us in our own half and i needed to wait a minute before we scored, Strange when you think about it, were in the 20th century and we have to wait a minute before we catch up. Anoying yes it was but when they screamed that we had another my eyes couldn’t wait for the pictures which i took in with great enjoyment. Just goes to show what a tightwad i am get yourself a ticket Steve and you can watch it as it happen’s.

  9. HenryB says:

For someone watching on a dodgy stream, Rico, that is a pretty good match report. 🙂

If I make a comment about the Sagna contract I hope you will not beat me up.

You see, as good as Sagna has been, I think since he broke his leg (twice) he has lost a lot of pace, and at his age, that is not going to get any better over the next 3 years and will probably get worse, in my opinion.

Helmet and flack jacket to hand. 🙂

  10. Scott from Oz says:

Guys, i had a perfect view of the game, and we were not great, but Fulham were better than they have been for quite a while.
One thing is for sure, Jack is damn near back to his best.
Another thing….more a question…..is anyone in the world better over the ball in tight areas than Santi?
    He is incredible.

  11. rico says:

Sp, so did I but my adverts wouldn’t close and I was too frightened to press any of the ‘x’ buttons…

I caught Footy First too Hb 😉 I can see where you are coming from re Sagna…

  12. Scott from Oz says:

Henry, i have never seen Sagna play better.
Considering he can also play CB, there is no way i could consider letting him go…..if it were up to me, of course.

  13. tsgh says:

    morning all,
    Good match report…

It was also interesting reading the assessment and ‘concerns’ of the gents who were at the game yesterday…

Imho Sagna has to stay… the club offering Sagna a ‘2 year’ contract is not the same as a 2 year extension imo…

Sagna is still covering more ground than any other player in the squad apart from AR16 whilst playing at rb and can also be a solid 3rd or 4th choice CB for the rest of his career..

From what I have heard he is amongst the lowest earning senior players in the squad and he is being offered 75k a week for 1.5 years; 90k for 2 years or 75k for 3 years is a fair deal for all parties especially for a loyal servant like Sagna imho…

He can walk to Monaco or Psg and sign a 3 year deal on similar amount to what Abidal is on so…

I understand Aw’s predicament as he promised Bellerin a first team place for him to join us,; he also has Cj25 and Yennaris who should have been promoted imo but due to his height and bout with tropical illness has not had the chance as yet… AW therefore has to strike a balance to ensure the younger guys still get a chance and don’t become impatient.

  14. southyorkshiregunner says:

There are loads of sound right backs around, certainly as good as what we have.

Re; the buttons. On Crichfee just click the two small x buttons and not the larger x’s on the ads.

  15. rico says:

    Welcome rotterdam gunner..

Thanks Ts. Will be interesting to see which of the youngsters play rb against Coventry. Jenks will no doubt get the nod over the other two imo.

  16. tsgh says:

Imho, I have to disagree on Sagna’s loss of pace…

Maybe last season when he came back from his injury and played without having a pre-season then yes that would be a a fair assessment because even then Mr Positive Scott and I disagreed on if Sagna should still be starting ahead of CJ25…

It did not help with TW14 strolling around in front of him without any protection either… 😉

Saying that since March last year until now, his average work rate is the highest amongst the top 10 in the whole EPL in terms of average distances ahead of Seamus Coleman, Riether (Fulham), Rafael and even Zabeleta of all people…

This is not considering he is hardly ever injured and is younger than all his rivals… he has been injured only a handful of times since joining us in 2007

  17. tsgh says:

Hiya Rico, Bellerin is back on loan with Watford so he won’t play…

I think we way see Ajayi and Sagna at CB and maybe Nico J at LB if AW wants to rest Gibbs or Monreal

  18. southyorkshiregunner says:

Two bad leg breaks in one season isn’t just any old injury … To come back from that and the bad reviews he was getting last season re: his form or lack of it is nothing short of immense….

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

  19. southyorkshiregunner says:

When we were pissing about with Alumunia in the nets, Squillaci and Djourou at centre back, Vermaelen at left back on Song allegedly providing DM cover, Sagna was our stand-out performer in what was an average-to-shite defence.

Put good players around him with accountability and look at the result.

    Numero Uno.

We all want him to stay.

  20. Scott from Oz says:

Lol Ginge, in all fairness, at that time, Jenks was playing fantastic football, so my opinion was based more on the point he did nothing to lose his spot.
Still, Sagna came back bigger and better than i could have hoped for.

  21. tsgh says:

    True, Scott…

    I ain’t saying I was right then…
I was just setting the plot to say his performances at that time was so questionable that even YOU thought he should not be starting…

  22. Adam says:

Sagna has been great since he joined the club. Give him the deal he wants. Football contracts aren’t written in stone and the natural order of things will prevail.

  23. tsgh says:

    🙂 Syg…

when you put it that way, we have had some very dubious defenders in the recent past… it was a miracle we even finished 3rd or 4th…

  24. stevepalmer1 says:

re Sagna, I have to admit that i have sung his praises since he arrived i believe him to be a very good player indeed, but i think you have to remember that Arsenal FC have certain rules in place that 30 year old players have a one year deal. Whether you believe that to be right or wrong is not for me to say, but i do believe that keeping a fairly young team is good for Arsenal and once you change the rule for one it then becomes a lottery. Van Persie i believe came to that stage and i would think he was offered a contract for just the one year Persie wanted more security which you can’t blame him for, so off he went to united who were willing to pay him more and to give him the contract he craved. We do have young players who could fill the position just like we did when Cole left then Cliche but at the end of the day we have Gibbs and now Monreal as well. Once you change the rules this opens up problems with the young players who feel that their chance may never come, so start to look elsewhere. Sagna although i feel he is still brilliant, has lost some of his pace and also from his own admission has said that he doesn’t know how long he can keep it up for, personally i think a 2 year deal blinding for him and i suggest he takes it

  25. Adam says:

SP. I don’t know if it’s actually a rule but rather a judgement that Wenger takes on a player by player basis. After all, he sees them in training daily and understands their fitness levels and issues better than any of us.

  26. tsgh says:

SP1, I hear you on Sagna but Sagna is not being overed a 2 year deal…

The same way Theo Walcott did not sign a 4 year deal but a 3.5 year deal about a year ago when he was in a similar situation…

The club see it as a 2 years deal but to the player and his agent it is a 1.5 year extension as he still has 6 months to go which to me is not good imho…

  27. stevepalmer1 says:

Morning Adam, only what i read somewhere, but at the end of the day Wenger runs everything so final decision is his i assume.

  28. Adam says:

Hi TS. If you’re looking for shape then, without Arteta, it can look shambolic. I will say that, at last, Jack seems to have a position and I see his starting positions when the ball is turned over against us as being intelligent. Flamini was superb yesterday offensively and defensively. My main concern is in wide areas. I much prefer Santi floating around in front of the midfield more centrally and I could be persuaded that a specialist wide man with blistering pace and the ability to go past a defender would change the dynamic of our game.
The defence is bailing us out of potential problems. Strangely enough I feel that the addition of a Lacey class striker could actually herald a more defensively stable midfield.

  29. potter says:

Give him a 2 year deal with an option for another , that way he has the possibility of extending or going on a free with a pay deal. At the moment he is too good both for his playing and his experience for us to lose. As the run in to this season proceeds we will find the knowledge in our back 4 coupled with that of Rosicky invaluable . We have to keep these players content and completely focused on their game.

  30. stevepalmer1 says:

Hiya Ginge, i see where your coming from, but in Theo’s case since he’s contract extention he has had almost a year out injured who would have expected that. To be honest i was a bit suprised at the offer he got especially when he demanded a hundred grand and to play up front, i admire his cheek but was still suprised that Wenger relented

  31. tsgh says:

    Cheers Adam…

I concur on JW’s improvement… you can see he looks behind him to see if he has cover before he bombs forward etc…

I think we could do with a proper wide man too as we ask too much from our FB imo… Juan Cuadrado will be a great start if rumours are true as he is one of the best in Serie A after Lichtsteiner…

I think MF20 has improved immensely going forward but I am not so sure he was that great defensively yesterday especially in the first half but maybe I am just nit picking 😉

I thought AV and FFC carved us open with ease on a few times and if they had some quality we may have gone behind in the first half with the chances they created…

I know stats is not everyone’s cup of tea but his average tackles etc are very low and not even amongst the top 30 in the league. Considering that AR16 has been out for a few weeks now he still leads in that area… I agree stats can be misleading but making no tackles against City and getting subbed in the 2nd half is a concern imho..

  32. Adam says:

TS, Flamini closes up a lot of space and reads the game well. He is also very vocal and what he lacks in class he makes up for with attitude. It will be interesting to see how Ramsey blends back into the team when fit.
    I don’t know Cuadrado I am afraid.

  33. tsgh says:

    😀 Sp1 re Theo…
He can be frustrating and like you I do not rate him as a PLAYER but as a footballer who can turn it on on the big stage he is up there with the best of them…and so it is a compromise I guess.

  34. potter says:

Agreed Adam , Flamini covers space and reduces options for through balls . Probably he has had to learn not to tackle because everytime he does he seems to attract a yellow card. Definitely he’s on the referees hit list.

  35. stevepalmer1 says:

To be honest reading the comments about our forward play has nothing to do with the player in my opinion of course, as this is the way Wenger wants them to perform. His stance in my opinion is keep the pressure up and chances will open up. In all honesty that seems to be working not pretty to watch but seems affective. Of course many are right, top of the league and still in domestic cups and Champions league, With Wenger stating that this is the best season he and his team have had for years just tells me things will stay the same until things change.

  36. tsgh says:

Indeed AW will have a headache with AR16 as JW is hitting form…
didn’t cross my mind Potter… and no yellow card in his last match…

  37. Micko says:

rico, stay away from that x certificate stuff, it’s not for your eyes !

Is it just me but it sure sucks being an Arsenal supporter at the moment, performances like yesterday don’t help, still think we can turn this season around.

  38. NashuaGunners says:

Good Afternoon Rico and All. Short but precise ‘Match Report’. I enjoy reading it.

Sagna is an humble employee. He has stick with us during the 4th-as Trophies seasons when others were leaving for ‘trophies and big payday’, and he never complains. With two injuries and he is still performing as he is, 2 years contract with an extension to 3 base on performance, make really sense. Why try to change what is working?

There are enough Wingers in the EPL that could improve us on. Has anyone watch Adam Johnson recently? He is doing well with his defensive duties and he not shy to take defenders one on one. And he is scoring goals.

  39. bradlop says:

    Afternoon all,
I said yesterday that we have too many midfielders cutting inside. No width or pace on the wings to get in behind or beat the fb. If Santi should have the free role then Ozil needs to be more of a proper 10 or second striker.
I personally don’t feel Ozil was the player we needed with so many similar players. We needed a striker and Ozil isn’t pulling the trigger. I just wonder if he’s meeting Wenger’s expectations.
Lastly, we pressed the first 5 mins and then got tired or decided to step off and give them time and space.

  40. NashuaGunners says:

T’s. When SC19 scored yesterday my thoughts went straight to you. You been hard on him of late. 🙂

  41. tsgh says:

🙂 ha ha Ng… I have been hard about his game but I will continue to say he has too much talent and so he needs to turn up on the big games imo…

He is 28 now so about time…

  42. goonster says:

Whoo the fiorentina dude cuadrado(spelling) is a beast. Ghost past players like they are not there, will make a useful sifning dont you think?

  43. goonster says:

Whatever happened to emma i miss her videos. Especially on individual players after a game. Would love to see gnabsor wilshere’s highlights.

  44. tsgh says:

we have watched him for like a year now… I even emailed Rico with a story about D.Law meeting with the president but still no deal has been brokered…

My view is that their maybe work permit issue or that Laviola who have a very rich owner do not need the cash as they sold Jovetic and Ljaiic last summer

  45. goonster says:

Dang what i ll give to have him dance around bpl defenders in that same fashion, especially that twat ivanobitch. Hopefully we ll get him . Dont want turning up against us. I ll probably shit myself.

  46. tsgh says:

I do not know if he holds an EU passport in addition to a Colombia citizenship but 25 games for Colombia since 2013 is not enough for UK work permit imo…

  47. tsgh says:

with AW it could be that the player may be into clubbing/revelling too much or something benign to us but important to AW so he may not sign him…

  48. rico says:

Fab thanks Ts, lovely long walk in the sunshine with the woofa, can’t beat it…

Repairing the gate to where the chickens are was a bit more tricky though, the hinge came off last night and nearly fell on me. 😉

    You had a good day?

  49. bradster says:

Moyes just doesn’t have the Fergie pockets for the ref to fit into. I think Man City have got them now.

  50. bradster says:

Pity we lost out on Hazzard. We seem to get the duds of teams. We get Gerv instead of Hazzard, Eisfeld instead of Gotze. Only exception was Cazorla instead of Mata which was not too much of a loss

  51. rico says:

And Park instead of??? Surely whoever it was, they’d have been better….

And Santos instead of?? A buffet 😉

  52. Adam says:

Oh come great sink hole and consume the whole stinking edifice that is Stamford Bridge. You can take the Chelsea players and that classless dog Mourinho too.

  53. tsgh says:

    Someone’s tweet…

    Jamie LFC ‏@jamie_kop 12m
    Ferdinand – £29m
    Kompany – £6m

    Rooney – £30m
    Negredo – £16.4m

    Toure – £24m
    Fellaini – £28m

    Navas – £14.9m
    Zaha – £15m

    City ruin football

  54. tsgh says:

    Yes Hernandez or Vela? lol

Imho, Hernandez is like Ole in 1999 for Yanited;but for us most fans may call such players dead weight as they feature sparsely… but very influential I must add…

  55. bradster says:

Personally i don’t feel we needed Ozil. We have a few similar players. I wanted and felt we needed a goal scorer with skill, a Suarez or Rooney.
I still think we need pace and skill on the wings too.

  56. rico says:

I’m not convinced – players are out there, just have to go and offer the right money to both club and the player….

Not convinced we could get get the likes of Costa etc, but there has to be players out there who would make us stronger, give us a deeper squad and give us something different…

Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate and that’s where I see us right now…

  57. tsgh says:

Next 2 matches for top 3 will be crucial…

How interesting is it that on christmas day the dippers were on top of the tree but we are now 8 points ahead…

    Arsenal

    Southampton (a)
    Palace (h)

    ManCity:

    Spurs (a)
    Chelsea (h)

    Chelsea

    West Ham (h)
    Man City (a)

  58. tsgh says:

if either teams drop points and we take all 6 it gives us leeway to drop points against the chavs without necessarily affecting us too much…

  59. malaga gooner says:

Gginge we have been lucky with the fixture,we have an opportunity to build a 3-4 point lead coming into the big games,if we come out on top after the big games we will win the pl

  60. tsgh says:

Mg… you must be joking with Vidal joining Yanited… why will the best midfielder in football join a sinking ship? lol

    Contrae I can believe…

  61. tsgh says:

The fact that we play BM, scums, Shitty, and the chavs within 18 days from 11th March is quite scary imo.. not forgetting the dippers and yanited in February plus BM

  62. malaga gooner says:

United are 1 of the biggest clubs in the world, why is Vidal going their uunbelievable.
He is exactly what they need

  63. tsgh says:

I think Pogba, Gundogan and koke have all refused yanited in the last week or so…

Yanited can’t even attract Barnes… lol

Moreover the glaziers lost £250M last week so I am sure they are not looking to break a transfer record…

Vidal is replacing Xavi or Alonso next season mark my words and not yanited… Gundogan is part of that equation too as Barca will want one of them…

  64. rico says:

Ts, not sure they have refused Man Utd, they just refuse to leave the club they are at. There’s a difference imo.

Sometimes players can be loyal to their current club 😉

  65. tsgh says:

Posted by a Man United “Fan” on twitter
“VERY ANGRY WE LOSE TODAY. BEEN A #MUFC FAN SINCE 2007 BUT IF WE DON’T WIN THIS YEAR I WILL SUPPORT MY 2ND TEAM #MCFC OR GO BACK TO #CFC AGAIN”

  66. Cesc says:

An average performance again, think we should have start with poldi on ‎†̥ђƺ left.Carzola is a great player αη∂ he is more decisive than Ozil.To be Ozil is behind carzola αη∂ rosicky but he’s a good player to have around.Koscienly has №t be getting ‎†̥ђƺ praise he deserves.

  67. goonster says:

I was gonna say the samething potter…i just dont get the hype. He is average at the most. Plus the pricetag is ludicrous. Dont need him.

  68. rico says:

Sorry for the delay in letting you out of moderation Cesc.

I think the Mancs might scrape in at the last moment but obviously hoping they don’t.

  69. Nashuagunner says:

I say get one from the EPL to get the job done. There are enough qualities already begging that would love to join Arsenal.

  70. Adam says:

Morning Scott. Just an opposing view really. A vain attempt to balance the scales of a rush to judgement. 🙂

  71. Adam says:

A milder version here Rico. This morning I have to travel to the sh..hole known as Hackney. A land where they cycle on the pavements to get to the pub and exist on a diet of fried chicken, chips and strong cider.

  72. rico says:

My own view is that its’s quite difficult to judge a player who plays outside the PL. He may look awful or outstanding in the league in which he’s playing but the PL is something quite different..

Costa might arrive in England and be awesome.

Ntep might only be playing in the league he does right now but who knows, the PL might suit his game.

    Just two examples 😉

  73. rico says:

At least it’s chilly how it should be in January Adam. Good luck with your travels..

Honest Scott, they were fast asleep, as was I until something in the kitchen fell onto the floor. I thought we had unwanted visitors no with large torch in hand, I went to check.

    Bloody fridge magnet/pad!! 😉

  74. Adam says:

If he did arrive Rico I imagine it would be at Chelsea to play the tedious brand of football so loved by the prancing twat himself. I have never seen a match on Sky where the camera so often found its way to the manager or heard such a fawning bunch of idiots like the increasingly cretinous Jeff Stelling with his teased hair, dripping in product, extolling the man’s great ‘entertainment value’. I must admit I went off Charlie Nicholas a bit more when he stated he could “listen to Mourinho all day”. I find I am happier if I never listen to him at all as he seems incapable of opening his mouth without insulting someone.
I doubt he would last long in Hackney, a place where the laws of man remain unobserved.

  75. rico says:

But can they afford him Adam? They announce loss after loss and Costa wouldn’t be cheap…

I’d rather we signed Rooney but I know that won’t happen.

Seems that Sky have to focus on someone other than Fergie and Jose was always going to be that man….

    I despise the little weasel…

  76. Adam says:

Rico. They can afford anybody and everybody. If Man City and Chelsea can sail through the FFP stipulations then quite honestly, what is the point of it?
I think you are right about Sky. They always aim for the lowest common denominator. They are desperate for ‘personalities’ in the game. Someone to liven things up on their tedious panels of experts. This must explain why the use Merson, though how a man who drives into the back of a 30 ton lorry on a motorway claiming he didn’t see it can be relied upon for insight is beyond me. I would recommend that they get Brother Lee on there. He would shake the place up. 🙂

  77. rico says:

Is FFP finally in place now or is it next season clubs will start to get penalised?

🙂 re Lee Adam, he sure would…

  78. tsgh says:

Morning Rico and gents of HH,

Have you been speaking to Piers Morgan Rico? Wooney has been on his lips the past week… lol

  79. Adam says:

It would be nice Rico but I struggle to see it. I also wonder, as he was an early achiever, if his lifestyle might suggest an early finisher-career wise. I thought that Kev’s favourite Darren Bent made a strong case for himself on Saturday. 🙂

  80. tsgh says:

ha ha ha Adam, I think only Drogba has scored more goals against us than Bent… 8 in 11 appearances… he nearly made it 9 in 11 on saturday bar a fine interception by Kosser…
