Rip it up and start again..

Morning all.

Yesterday’s match was just another in a run of quite pathetic performances. I’d rather forget it really but that would be me burying my head in the sand. In any case, it’s quite likely that a similar kind of performance will rear it’s ugly head very soon.

For us it’s easy to sit back a point the finger of blame in whichever direction we choose but the reality is, Emery, the coaches and players are all to blame. Not for one minute am I suggesting this squad is good enough to win anything big, but it could perhaps be better. Certainly more organised.

I think Emery needs to rip up his plans and start again. He wants to keep Ramsey until the summer, so play him. He speaks highly of Mesut Ozil, play him too because we need his creativity. Accept he won’t track back, he’s a wimp, he’s sulky but deal with it by giving him support in the team he picks.

Accept Xhaka is a liability. Don’t play him, in fact sell him if he can. Mavropanos and Medley, play one or the other alongside Sokratis. Leave the past behind and take a risk on the future. What is there to lose?

It’s all very well thinking experienced players are the ones who’ll handle the Premier League best, but they’re are the ones causing us the most problems all too often. In my opinion anyway. Declan Rice is being praised for his performance against us yesterday and rightly so. He’s 19 years old! Emery has got to start believing in our own younger players too and I don’t just mean in fixtures like we’ve seen them in.

Willock, Smith Rowe and Eddie. Eddie didn’t score against Blackpool I know but does anyone believe he wouldn’t have tried harder against West Ham to do so than Aubameyang did? Aubameyang scores some classy goals I know but the rest of his game is no better than Ozil. Watch Raheem Sterling and then think about Aubameyang. The difference in attitude and work rate is huge.

If things continue as they are or get worse, Unai Emery’s reign isn’t going to last long. At least go out trying…

See you in the comments…

Thanks for the post Rico, how to cheer upon a grey January day, tune in to BT Sport 1 at twelve fifteen for Arsenal v Chelsea Women’s Super League. You know it makes sense. 😉

  2. A says:

Yesterday’s performance was awful. Xhaka needs to be moved on, he is ridiculous , mustafi and Socrates is the worst defence we have had in a while. They can be mentioned in the breath as silvestre, Cygan and stepanovs

As for emery- he was appointed over arteta due to his knowledge of the players and the youth – and he stated he didn’t want massive changes needed to the team as compared to arteta who wanted player changes and a say in transfers – the board must have been delighted with emery with his less demands . Arteta knew the job at hand with arsenal , but knew the youth coming through was of quality

Emery is a good coach and his subsitutions making were spot on but I feel teams have caught up with him lately , his issue with ozil seems as if he finally feels he is at club who will back him unlike PSG where the players went to the board direct . But surely have ozil on the bench at least

As for xhaka, Maitland niles should be playing there and even though we have had injuries I will be shocked to see if emery doesn’t play him there. Wenger played him in midfield on numerous occasions he also gave Willock a space in the first team

Emery may not like ozils work rate – fine – bench him then . But at least play him so he can show some form and then in the summer – someone may come in for him

How he supposed to move ozil on if he isn’t playing?

But surely Emery himself must be looking at xhaka and say to himself ” he listens to my instructions but still screws up” ( along with mustafi they make the most errors )

So why is he selected ?

It’s coming across at arsenal – whoever does what emery says are those will be in the squad and selected – which it should be

But selecting players who are consistent at costing us games isn’t helpful

Emery needs to address that. The last 5 games we have played in the same manner – nothing seems different and it’s not been great viewing

Wenger was criticised as people said his team only knew how to play one way. Emery is doing the same currently

  3. Hobart says:

Emery is almost mimicking Mourinho. He’s looked at the squad. Doesn’t like it so he’s ostracising players, and passing the buck up to the board.

Normally it works for Mourinho for a couple of years. It won’t work for a second here. Also he has a two year deal so sacking him and paying him off would be unfrugal. So I don’t think he’s going anywhere.

  4. rico says:

A – Wenger was also criticised for playing players out of position which again, Emery has been doing.

I struggle to understand why, when we’ve had so many injuries already and with Kos getting on a bit, he’s playing all three centre backs at once.

Torreira on the bench was odd too unless there’s something we don’t know.

  5. Le Coq Monster says:

Thanks Rico for another top one.

Lets face it we all go a bit overboard after a poor performance and then we calm down and think more wisely !………………..I`m ok now and have have chilled out to come to the conclusion that we were indeed shit as I first thought ! hahahaha

Boo me if you like but I like Xhaka……………….booooooo !

I`d love to see us play more of the youngsters especially now that it is more likely than not that we are not going to get top 4. One thing I`m convinced of is trhat they will give an extra few % more than the seniors !……………………….something to prove and impress !

I never wanted Dick !………………..always was Simeone or Arteta !

What has Dick done ?……………………won something in France with a team as rich as Masour City, but with less opposition, hands up who think they could have won something with PSG ?……………………………………..looking outside my window the cows, sheep, horses, rabbits, dogs, grandkids, blow up doll have all put thier hands up I kid you not ! hahahaha

He won the EL 3 times on the trot !……so what !…….nothing in the Spanish league, no Barca, RM, BM, PSG, Man C etc` in EL…………………..Wenger winning 3 FA Cups in 4 years was more impressive…………….a proper cup !

A comment with no mention of Kr…… hahaha

  6. Adam says:

    Morning Rico and all.

Seems to me that Arsenal are a club permanently stuck at a crossroads. I don’t know a single fan who is happy with Kroenke’s ownership and doesn’t, in their dreams, see a much better future than the one he appears to offer. Every few weeks/days we seem to come unglued, the squad is in a delicate state through injuries, contract situations, behind the scenes disputes, bad attitudes, mysterious team selections and tactics. You name it. We live it constantly and it appears that it’s here to stay. As other clubs receive investment and have clear plans as how to move forward I can only see Arsenal slipping further and further back. You can’t build anything on shifting sand.

We all know that our squad is average and that the organisation and in-game tactics, apparently Unai’s strong points, are lousy. The fans who actually attend the games week in, week out, are feeling somewhere between uneasy and rabid. Very, very few can see a bright future. Kroenke we are told never sells a share and isn’t going anywhere so, unless a mega-mad offer comes in from someone who sees the potential and wants the club, we are screwed. Someone who is prepared to circumvent the FFP regulations that have so far not prevented Man City from buying their success. If this man or organisation buys the American out then we will have at least a chance to move towards a place at the top table of European football. Wenger and Gazidis spun a web of cobblers for years and we bought it because of our burning desire to see Arsenal successful but the penny has surely dropped now. Look at our squad, the state it’s in and the lack of funds. It ain’t gonna happen is it?

The only possible way to move the club forward coincides neatly with Stan Kroenke moving out or am I missing something here?

Fan power got rid of Wenger. The empty seats spoke louder than any blog or vlog ever could. The only way I can see to influence the status-quo is to ensure that the Emirates is way less than half-full game in – game out. Empty the place. It requires a leap of financial faith and It might not work as the fans want, but it would certainly give those in power serious pause for thought. Yes, it’s easy to say that nothing would happen but then again it might just draw an interested party out to make Kroenke an offer he might just consider. It would certainly create some serious pressure from sponsors. Who wants to be associated with a club in permanent crisis? At the very least it would be doing something as opposed to moaning about it all the time and essentially doing nothing.

The sad and awful truth is that none of this will happen and that Arsenal will go on being a source of deep frustration and resentment for decades to come.
And who the fuck wants that? Desperate times call for desperate measures.

  7. Le Coq Monster says:

Great comment, Adam……………….I`d make that a post.

Was near enough saying the same to my son yesterday about empty seats to get rid of Kroenke and then I remembered something I read on a BBC article that suggested most teams could play in front of an empty stadium and still survive financially with the TV money !………………………………….we are indeed stuck between a rock and a hard place.

  8. Adam says:

Thanks LC. The Emirates generates over £3 million per game. Stem that revenue stream and couple it with the loss of sponsorship and the bad publicity and that would have to hurt a man whose reason for living is the accumulation of money surely.

  9. Le Coq Monster says:

Make it so !……………………..that`s it !……………. fcuked if I`m having a holiday in Rwanda now !

    🙂

  10. VCC says:

    LC 11:56.

” I like Xhaka” ….not sure if its specsavers you need, or the men in white coats?

I’ll send them both round….take your pick.

Xhaka, is absolute dross. Cannot run, cannot tackle, has the slowest co-ordination brain to foot on a footballer I’ve seen. AND, KEEPS making the same mistakes, stupid passes in and around our area that gets intercepted. The opposition have sussed him out and pressurise him all the time just waiting till he inevitably “cocks” up.

You are of an age that remembers the phrase “clear your lines” I’m not sure UE instructs our players to adopt this attitude.

  11. potter says:

You can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
I don’t think Emery was unaware of the situation when he took over , I just think he thought that the players were better than they are.but.It’s no surprise to me we are seeing the emergence of young players inside our club . In days of yore they would have all been farmed out to the likes of Warnock , Pulis , Allardyce and frequently their progress would have stalled if not foundered and died.
The man is not stupid and he knows that they can’t all come through at once but Maitland Niles is getting game time and who would have thought that we would be missing Holding as much as we are. defensively we started badly but seemed to be making some progress until he was injured and his loss is being felt badly.I would like to know who made the decision to expel Chambers , I thought he and Holding would make a fine pair were they persevered with..
I said last night the best thing would be to pick the team fom the front and fit the players around your best .
A 4-4-2 that could be 4-3-3 screams out at me and that includes letting Ramsey go It means that two midfield players will have to run their whatsits off but to incorporate Ozil that’s what is needed and you can perm any of 3 or 4 players to fill the other place
A solid back 4 :- Bellerin , Sokratis ,Koscielny Monreal. We need Lacazette for his work and eye for goal and we need Ozil to make the passes that gets Aubameyang in the place to score. All three have to play.
it’s the squad he has and he has to get on with it but I think he knew that.

  12. rico says:

Thanks Lc, what is is about Xhaka you like? I ask because not so long ago I would have defended him too but there’s just something about him which annoys the heck out of me…

  13. potter says:

Adam , it’s no surpise that as soon as Kroenke got 100 % the money has been frozen . many of us warned that should he get complete control and take away all the disclosure that the stock market allowed , money could and would get syphoned from London to help with his expenditure on his true love the new Los Angeles stadium and the Rams.
It seems that this could well be the case although we will never know because he does not have to tell us. It’s all going to KSE and it can spend it where and when it wants.
As you say he won’t sell and he is happy with his lot. We can only hope that when they go to play away to the Cowboys that someone parks on a grassy knoll as he drives by.

  14. Adam says:

Morning Potter. I agree and as to Kroenke we can only assume that he sees Arsenal as just another of his shrewd investments. To us of course it is much more.
The one hand the fans can play is to withdraw their support (temporarily) from the club and hope. His God is money.
Failing that perhaps an opportune gopher hole while he is riding around the biggest privately-owned ranch in the US on a very feisty horse, bearing the Kroenke brand no doubt.

  15. Cicero says:

What exactly do people want from Kroenke?

We pour scorn on Man City for for the oil money that floods into the club. We have derided Chelsea for taking Abramovich’s roubles. Yet we call Kroenke a skinflint for not doing exactly the same. Do we want to become a club that buys success?

  16. rico says:

I still want to see what kroenke does in the summer. When the financial problems will start to ease. Maybe I’m being naive, or just hopeful.

  17. Adam says:

Cicero. Personally I just want him to invest what it takes. The ethics in football went out the window donkey’s years ago from what I can see.

  18. Joaquim Moreira says:

    aftenoon all!
    – The same mistake was made at the start of the season: Xhaka and Gendouzi at the same time in the midfield. When Torreira entered the midfield, safety and football was another.
    – Xhaka’s action yesterday in the goal was from a beginner. Or corner or dispatches the ball away. Making an assistance of those is deadly.
    – The team is without passion and joy to play.
    – Ozil will not improve anything, just create more problems in my opinion.
    – The defense has many flaws but the main problem is in the “engine room” of a football team: the midfield.

  19. potter says:

I think what I want from Kroenke is leadership , someone that will take action and drive the club forward. He is an absentee and relies on a board of ex bankers and business men bought up to balance his books who by their very nature are conservative not in the political way but probably are anyway. Mansour has money , so does Abrhamovic but what they have also shown is a will to be the best. We need KSE to do likewise if not by putting in money but by example , pushing all the time for improvement.

  20. rico says:

We agree re the midfield Jm. A strong midfield makes defending a lot easier. We lack height, physicality and speed in ours, mind you, we do in defence too.

  21. rico says:

I’d like to see Kroenke sort the board out. Out with the old and bring some new and ambitious men in. Arsenal men preferably.

Josh told us they let the board make the decisions so why not improve the board members. Proper football men.

  22. allezkev says:

Stan Kroenke is 71 (72 this year) and looks as fit as a fiddle, so unless someone shoots him, we’re stuck with him for a long long time…

I was chatting to a good friend the other day and he said something to me that I’d had on my mind for awhile, but didn’t really want to articulate and that is ‘Its possible Kev that I may never see Arsenal win the League again in my lifetime’…

Now given that my friend is in rude health and I expect to see him around for a long long long time that could mean many many years of this shit in store for us and beyond… 😕

I want to add, that next summer is the acid test, this summer Kroenke put £50m on the table initially before adding another £20m top up…

Because of FFP I’ve cut him some slack, but the spotlight will be turned fully on Enos if his lack of support allied to his reported quarterly hiving off of £4.5m continues to hamstring Emery and whoever comes after him.

With that in mind I cannot overestimate how much I agree with Adam, if this shit continues with the owners lack of interest and underinvestment you can only fight back financially.

It means fans keeping their season tickets and not going, the empty seats really send a powerful message.

It means not buying the merchandise and not just from the club shop, from everywhere.
We can’t affect foreign markets but we can affect the English one.

It’s means not buying the programme.
It mean boycotting the drink and food outlets.

That’s what I can see at this stage next season if we reach January 2019 and are told we can only take loans. Something has to give…

  23. Cicero says:

Oh well that didn’t go too well, nothing much to cheer about. Slow start, two nil down before we even started to play, good surge at the end. Got one back and came close to an equaliser. Reminded me of a certain men’s team. 😉

  24. Cicero says:

Kev, to buy the season ticket and not attend the games won’t hurt Kroenke, the attendance recorded will still be based on tickets sold, just as it is now. Not buying the merchandise, food and drink etc. Will only make it harder to buy any players at all.

  25. Le Coq Monster says:

Been out buying some shrubs, so late getting back to you Rico……………………………I thought Xhaka was going to be our Alonso, but maybe he is at the wrong club or wrong league as when he has his moments he looks class.

Just wonder how much Kroenke has borrowed to buy all the shares from Usmanov and how is he going to pay for them ?…………………..from Arsenal`s money or from his own ?

As to Cicero`s good point……………………I have always said you wont find any City or Chav fan moaning about the buying of trophies and neither would I………………I`d sell my soul to the devil to be in Man City`s position financially !

When FFP first came out I thought it was the best thing for our club, but UEFA`s lack of testi`s and also their corruption has made it a damp squib, until they hit CFG and PSG in the points and not the pocket no one will believe in it.

  26. potter says:

I seem to remember reading that the food and drink is franchised out and we only get a small percentage of sales. Cicero is right if fans gave up their tickets altogether it might rock the boat but the scramble for them afterwards would be interesting.

  27. Adam says:

It’s more playing to an empty stadium really and not buying merchandise or food ‘n drink. I am convinced that the poor attendance figures contributed to getting Wenger out.
The alternative of course is to just keep moaning and do nothing.

  28. potter says:

FFP was always ripe for the coach and horses of the monied clubs . Nice idea but never going to work once the lawyers got into it.

  29. Le Coq Monster says:

That`s why I love the FA Cup, Kev`…………………..I`m too of the opinion I will never see us win the league in our life time without a “Leicester” moment, but the greatest cup comp` in the world is always a chance when you have an unseeded draw with big teams often cancelling each other out ( as per our next opponents)…………………………something we have always been good at whatever the finances and I just hope Dick takes it seriously, because if he doesn`t then he can go and do one imo !

  30. allezkev says:

LC, for me it’s the Europa League, we’re not getting top four, we’re not good enough, in fact I’m beginning to think we’ll finish 6th.

  31. Le Coq Monster says:

The way we are playing Kev I cant see us winning the EL…………………..that league has some better teams than Southampton and W Ham ! 🙂

  32. Cicero says:

Kev, I don’t know if there is an alternative. Massed walkouts at half-time? Massed demonstrations outside the Emirates? Would Kroenke take a blind bit of notice?

So what if the matchday revenue dropped by £1 million each home game, it won’t because the season tickets have already been paid for, but it’s pocket change to Kroenke anyway.

Unsold tickets will be snapped up by agencies happy to ship in tourists, who will buy the merchandise, food and drink.

Bleating about the situation in on-line blogs won’t have much effect either.

  33. potter says:

Letter sent today to the Denver Post .

Here in England we are getting more and more despondant about Stan Kroenke’s KSE and their ownership of The Arsenal . Since he gained 100% control it would seem that suddenly we have gone from a team with the biggest stadium in London with the largest income making over £3 million a game to a team with no money. How do you all feel about the way he runs your clubs ?

  34. andorrabyte says:

    Hello guys,
The comments coming thick and fast today and some interesting points of view – not surprising really given the depressing result.
I just had a peek at GA on the table and we have leaked 32 goals, same as Man Utd and Watford. I’m stating the obvious about where we could be in the table….

Thanks for the YouaremyArsenal.com article Rico from the 11th January, I guess we now know where we stand with regard to purchasing power until the summer. It’s quite a sobering read.
I watched Denis Saurez playing for Barcelona and like his skills and work ethic. Florentino Perez apparently is happy to release him so why don’t Arsenal do a loan deal with the option to buy him in the summer?
I’ve never been fond of Xhaka’s abilities as there’s a definite disconnect, between feet and the grey matter. Could he not have chested the ball down and delivered a clean pass out of the box instead of stooping to head it straight to the opposition.
Mustafi – needs to be told to go for the ball when tackling from behind – maybe his legs lack the pace? He doesn’t even get close!
Iwobi – has definite pace and does some dinky deliveries, so I’d like to see him run into the box more often with the ball and have a go.
We might even get a penalty awarded?
Not enough width to the team. AMN rarely goes wide so it gets congested in the middle of the park……
Our “defence” is 3rd rate but I also wonder whether Steve Bould is the problem with tactical advice?

  35. Cicero says:

Just for once I would be happy to see the spuds win, just to keep Man U off our tail, and they are letting me down. 0 – 1 at half-time. 😠

  36. rico says:

Afternoon guys, a good day on here today, really interesting reading peoples views. I think it’s fair to say that we’re not very happy…

Lc, I was pleased when we signed him too but he’s not what I thought we were getting.

  37. Andrew Halling says:

    Good post rico, afternoon everyone.

Should be some interesting answers in the Q and A I’m going to tomorrow with Parlour and Adams. In fact I’m looking forward to it much more than watching Arsenal games at the moment.

  38. rico says:

Andorra, Iwobi is doing ok isn’t he, his problem imo is not spotting a pass. Too many times he’s opts for the left when a pass to the other side is a better option. AMN got himself into plenty of space at times yesterday but our players ignored him.

  39. Cicero says:

Like you Rico I thought Iwobi did pretty well after the first couple of games, but he’s just not producing anything much from the left. Too many runs into cul-de-sacs.

If we could just get a bit of stability in defence we could afford to play Ozil as our number ten and not worry about his lack of defensive efforts. That might give us a bit of class in attack.

  40. scottfromoz says:

We are smack bang in the middle of the most tumultuous period the club’s seen in a hell of a long time.
We all know what needs to happen for things to change, but it’s not going to happen unless forced by supporters actions as Adam suggests.
No more purchasing merchandise until Stan is gone-my boy will be dirty!!!

  41. allezkev says:

Cicero, I’m not sure about walk outs, have they ever been tried?
Demonstrations outside the ground are a waste of time, but as last season proved, lots of empty seats will have an effect, not least on sponsors. No sponsor wants to be associated with a club that plays in front of a half empty stadium with no atmosphere.

As far as the resale of tickets, I’m not sure if your a season ticket holder, but last season was not organised at all, fans just stopped going and didn’t put their tickets up for resale either, so no tourists etc. It was a protest against Wenger – but I’m sure you know this just as I’m sure you recall that the half empty stadium had Josh Kroenke flying over to see what was going on.

  42. Le Coq Monster says:

Spuds lost and I cant help my Arsenal DNA by smiling, I`m not bothered about Manshafter closing the gap as we aint getting top 4 anyway so if they can then be my guest !……………….we will be in EL with either them or Chavs again, so nice to see Spuds lose .

I know Xhaka is marmite, but we definately need Ozil for imagination in the team……………….I bet if you asked Auba and Lacca who they want it will be The Wizard of Ozil everytime…………………yes, not the best tackler, but he does cover more miles than most in getting into positions ………………………..I know, he`s marmite too ……….
    🙂

  43. allezkev says:

Monaco paid £8.9m to Chelsea for Fabregas, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect Arsenal to get twice as much from Juventus for Ramsey, maybe more..,

  44. Cicero says:

Kev, I’ve never held a season ticket, I always had more pressing needs to finance, and haven’t attended more than a handful of games since departing London in the late 1960s and only ever been to the Emirates once (Portsmouth FA Cup). Watching on TV, there always seems to be a lot of tourists in the crowd, but they could of course be genuine Londoners despite their oriental appearance.

A half-time walkout from a televised match would certainly grab even Kroenke’s attention.

  45. potter says:

Our next four games Chelsea ,Cardiff , Man City, huddersfield W e need at least 6 points to keep pace with United who have Brighton, Burnley,Leicester and Fulham.

  46. Limey says:

For me,the most disappointing thing is the defence is worse than last year. And that’s with a new keeper, new centre half (quite good to be fair) and a much needed defensive midfielder.
We need to get shot of Mustafi and Xhaka ASAP,give youngsters a chance and then who knows.
    At least Spurs lost !

  47. allezkev says:

London is very cosmopolitan Cicero a bit like New York or Melbourne or Paris or most major cities now so I guess, so our supporters reflect that, it’s a nice mix with a friendly atmosphere although the majority accent is still Cockney.

    On the season ticket point:
That’s why I felt that those fans, who didn’t attend last season and left their seats empty made such a big statement, because the cost of a season ticket is so much it’s a big sacrifice to forgo the finance of reselling your ticket in order to make a point and why sponsors, the TV and the club sat up and took notice, it looked really bad.

Nobody should underestimate the influence that the fans still have, despite the great and the good telling us that we’re impotent.

  48. allezkev says:

Rico, I think that Juventus would like Ramsey before the Champions League starts again, that’s the slightest of slight holds we have.

I’m not sure if Cesc was out of contract in the summer Cicero, but I guess that Monaco needed him so they paid a small fee to get him early and therefore I guess it depends on how much Juve want Aaron etc. It’s all a major fcuk up anyway…

  49. allezkev says:

Potter, I felt last summer that we’d finish 5th this season.

A good mate of mine thought we’d finish 7th, which shocked me at the time when he said so.

But with our profligacy in front of goal allied to all our other issues (sulky superstars) alongside Chelsea finding some form and the rebirth of Man Utd it’s looking likely that we’re finishing 6th, so just go game by game mate and don’t have any expectations, because my expectations just left town…

  50. rico says:

Kev, him going in exchange for cash or a player would be the best for all imo. I don’t think it’d be fair of anyone to expect 100% commitment from Ramsey because he won’t want to get injured and he’s been shafted in some ways. He’s no doubt played his own part in his exit but in fairness to this current Arsenal regime, his contract should have been sorted out before the summer.

    Morning all.

  51. Adam says:

    Morning Rico and all.
Kev. I saw that too and he just laid out the values and the lunacy that brought us to this current situation where we appear to have no money to spend. Stupidly large contracts and deranged transfer fees given to too many players who really aren’t good enough. You can’t blame the players.

  52. scottfromoz says:

    Morning all.
Some of the decisions made were desperate last stands by Wenger, no question but that’s where those above him needed to stand up to be counted.
    No wonder Ivan left.
He’s as guilty as any of leaving us in such a position.

  53. rico says:

    For what Scott?

If you mean tying down players on big contracts then I’m fine with that, but only if they deserve it. Imo, Ozil didn’t and Ramsey doesn’t. New contracts yes if the manager at the time believes in them but not on a double your money contract.

We might dislike the Totts, but their wage structure is very very good and proves players will stay if their heart is in the club and not their pocket.

  54. scottfromoz says:

Nah I meant when he was accepting the big wage, himself.
I’m not too sure Spurs best players will hang around for too much longer, though.
If the massive salary isn’t their, and trophies are also absent, they’ll be gone, soon enough.
I think the gloss is off their manager now.
