Patience, Podolski, Ramsey and Ozil make the difference….

Arsenal: My View on yesterday’s performance.

First off, what a fantastic win by the mighty Gunners!

I really enjoyed the patience displayed by the boys, against the same opposition we face a month from now.

I am going to start with a minor worrying detail. Our BFG, Sagna and Kos have been rock solid in our defence this season. Our weakness is at left back. Gibbs is a fantastic left back who is still learning his trade and progressing at a rapid rate, yet the problem lies with his injury.

Vermaelen is the player I’d prefer to see play whilst Gibbs is injured, although yesterday our captain was out injured himself . I like Monreal, he’s Spains second choice left back after all, but I think the English league is a tad too physical for him and I think Vermaelen’s strength could see us benefit.

Now about our strengths.

1-0
1-0

First off,  it’s good to see Aaron Ramsey back on the pitch,  he is our energiser, our Duracell bunnie that we have been seriously missing since last December. He energizes the team and brings that positive attitude and fighting spirit our team desperately craved for during his time out injured.

It’s also good to see Mesut Ozil back and I thought he did ok in his first game for a while. He’ll only get better. Both his and Ramseys return should drive us on through our remaining games..

Ouch!!
Ouch!!

I was really happy with Arteta’s performance too. I have given him stick a few times this season because I believe with age no longer on his side he has lost some pace and strength. Same with Santi Cazorla,  the little Wizard’s feet have been working some magic lately and yesterday was no exception.

My wish in the midfield though is to see more of Oxlade-Chamberlain – you could see he was hungry when he came on from the bench.. I believe we could use his pace and strength against the lower teams who depend on rugby tactics to get their points.

Game over....
Game over….

Going forward I simply love Lukas Podolski who is making a statement right now that, feed him in the box and he’ll put the ball in the net and I think he’s the best striker at our club. Giroud did well too, he held the ball up and provided a physical presence up front.

I think with Ramsey and Ozil coming back,  Giroud may be a bit more clinical and start scoring more goals. I still think he needs to take his chances on a more consistent basis.

That being said, overall we started slow but when Ramsey turned his ignition on, the whole team woke up and together they got the job done.

We needed that positive result too as Everton are hot on our trails having won again yesterday.

Just three fixtures left in the league and we can’t afford to underestimate any one of the side we face, especially Norwich and West Brom who are still flirting around the relegation places.

We need that 4th spot, we may still have a chance to get 3rd place so long as we win our fixtures and City continue to wobble.

    Morning again all.

Thank you Jude for today’s post, I hope Scott didn’t bully you into writing it too much…

Hopefully you’ll get chance to pop on and say hello later….

  2. bradster says:

My point is, for all the spending Liverpool did, they sold too. I would think they’d be nearer half that if you include players sold.

  3. Mayor of the Woolwich says:

    Good morning Jude.
    Good morning all.
Solid Post-Match review. Yesterday’s performance brought back the memories of the earlier days of the season.
Injuries! What have you done to our mighty Arsenal?

  4. Scott from Oz says:

Bradster, why can anyone defend their net spend when attacking ours??
    Morning all.
That was Jude’s first attempt at a post, and he did bloody well.

  5. tsgh says:

Hi Brad, WHU bought him for £15.5M if you factor in the 2m they paid for him the season before as a loanee…

    On the dippers expenditure..

This season they spent £48.8M on Aspas (7M),Luis Alberto (6.8), Kolo (free), llori (7m), Sakho (18M), Mignoley (10M) and recouped £28m by selling Carroll (15.5M), Shelvey (5m), Downing (5M) Spearing (2m) plus Carragher retiring…

The year before they spent £49M on Borini (10M), Joe Allen (15M), Sturridge (12M) and recouped £8M back…

They have always outspent us by at least £15M every season including the spuddies too…

  6. rico says:

Morning Mow, where have you been hiding…? 😉

Fighting for 4th spot often brings out the best in our boys…. lol

  7. tsgh says:

You see we may have £100M in the bank but we still can’t compete…

The fixtures show AW and AFC is over acheiving… the reason why Stan will never sack AW imho..

The bottom lines worked out as follows since 2008:

Arsenal net spend = £11.1 million.

Chelsea net spend = £328.7 million.

Man City net spend = £509.6 million.

  8. bradster says:

Yes, but that’s not 100m every season as was per the previous post.
They should be fine for FFP then?

  9. Scott from Oz says:

Adam, maybe an exaggeration, but we are a much better side when he plays, and we hardly won without him.

  10. tsgh says:

Brad-They will be fine for FFP but if they want to move stadium like our noisy neighbours down shite lane.. they would have to sell imho of course…

  11. tsgh says:

Psg are in serious trouble… Monaco had to pay 200 m euro tax but as I say it depends on who owns the clubs…

  12. rico says:

Think J Henry said they are going to extend Anfield..

Not that I care really 😉

I’d like to see all the top half of the league sides build a new stadium, see how they cope….

  13. Adam says:

Mind you with Brendan Rodger’s new teeth illuminating the path ahead and now he has a new young girl on his podgy little arm to replace his wife who didn’t really fit his new dermaclean image, anything is possible.

  14. tsgh says:

If anyone can explain how this makes sense…

”Other top English clubs have little to fear, with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United being in the black in both years. Chelsea made a £49.4m loss last year but made a £1.4million profit in 2012 so will comply. Liverpool and other clubs such as Monaco, who are not playing in Europe this season, will not have to pass the FFP rules until next autumn, with any sanctions applicable in 2015.”

  15. bradster says:

True ts, but that wasn’t the point. The article was that Liverpool spent over 500m over the last 5 years but doesn’t account for the sales.

  16. rico says:

£90m loss for Liverpool over the last two seasons, ouch!

They are going to have a tricky time in the summer if they are going to sort their finances out in time for the CL….

We should be safe though, just! 😉

  17. tsgh says:

”illuminating the path and drawing on the Spirit Of Hillsborough’ makes me want to visit David Icke’s site… 😛

  18. bradster says:

I wonder if Suarez will still stay if they can’t strengthen. He will know it’ll be tougher next season.

  19. frednerk says:

    Morning rico,
Weak managers…Find it hard to drop a player, and some find it hard to explain why,
My point is injuries at the arsenal these days are like rest periods, for certain players,
I can’t help thinking that with the world cup coming up,all our injuried players are now getting ready for the rest of the season.

Not to mention The FA cup.

  20. rico says:

Brad, I still think he’ll be at Madrid next season. They must be due a big signing…. lol

Think you have a point there fred and morning again to you, even Jack is set to be back in time for the FA Cup and WC…

  21. Adam says:

TS. David Icke? Now you’re talking my language. All my shell suits are Icke models and my Botox is The Moyes Serum. My gleaming mashers are the Rodger’s Hampsteads and my bitter contempt was drawn directly from Jose’s Bile gland and packaged as ‘Small-Man Resentment Potion.

  22. BrainwashedKev says:

    Morning All, again….

Morning Rico, it’s a sunny day in London Town…

Morning Adam, Scott, Wavy, Fred, Brad, et al….

Is it too late to catch ManCity?
Wonder how many of their players have one eye on Brazil?

  23. tsgh says:

    Very true Fred..

How is it that Poldi is all of a sudden playing like it is 2006 again?
He knew Reus and Schurle were ahead of him… but with Reus burnt out due to being over played by Klopp, Poldi has a solid chance now…

As I was saying before Cesc has not had his February to end of March hamstring injury since he joined Barca..

Is it not also interesting how most of our injuries are muscle injuries that can’t be pin pointed…?

Anyway I will stop there before Micko comes to read this rubbish 🙂

  24. Scott from Oz says:

    I hope Suarez goes.
For no other reason than to show he is a farcical little shit with no love for Liverpool!!

  25. rico says:

Morning again Kev,not so bright here and quite chilly… 🙁

I think we can catch City, if they wobble of course. They still have to go to Goodison although I can’t see them losing that or any others to be fair….

  26. Gonerjoe says:

    Tsgh
Left some taughts on injuries on the last post don’t know if you saw them any way have a great day I am off to work.

  27. tsgh says:

Kev- Everton have Southampton and City.

If they take 4 points from those games it puts more pressure on us… if City beat them then it becomes more difficult to catch them… catch 22

  28. rico says:

    Wenger on Jack:

“Jack is close. I’d think two to three weeks — hopefully, he could be back for our last two matches.

“I think he will be selected for the England squad. Jack can be the positive surprise in Brazil. England have very difficult matches and if you come out of a group like that, the belief is going to be really strong.

“Jack has been in and out this year but I think they have sorted out the problem.”

Err, 2-3 weeks and our season is done isn’t it??

  29. devilgunner says:

Good Morning Lady, Sir, Gentlemen and Ladies.

    Thumbs up Jude.

Seems as if Aurier is being bandied again. Good. We get 4 players for the price of one……..

…..The strong, fast and versatile fullback can also play at left-back as well as a winger, which makes him a huge attraction for Arsenal.

he can play RB, LB, RW and LW. Plus he can be an emergency CB having played in a 3 man defence in Ginge’s favourite 3-5-2 formation.

  30. Lee says:

    Morning all…(from previous post)
Injuries have played a part in us not winning the PL, but Wenger had January to add players and decided against it.Lack of intent imho.
As for the refereeing decisions yeah they’ve been diabolical but so we’re our performances against citeh, chavs, scousers and toffees away! We need to stop blaming other forces and look closer to home!!!

  31. rico says:

    Morning Devil and Lee..

Spot on Lee, injuries has cost us and something needs addressing in that department but the biggest department which needs addressing is our depth/strength in the squad.

And finally learn how to beat the sides around and above us….

  32. frednerk says:

Being an old git as I am,I tend to look back a lot,as you all have probably noticed.
1981 Aston Villa won the league with just 14 players..42 games
Yer its quicky, but its not as physical,……..no way.

  33. Scott from Oz says:

    Ok.
Sign Kim as back up for Aaron……he does a similar type of job, allowing others to shine.
    Get a striker.
    Get a DM.
    Get a CB.
    A winger.
Do all this…and make them quality…and i do not think it matter show is manager next season.
We have a dominant “best” side, but a third rate best squad.

  34. devilgunner says:

Bonjour Rico. Good as he is I hope that JW does not make it to the final. I prefer our midfield to realistically comprise Arteta, Aaron and Ozil. with the Ox and Podolski on the wings. And Cazorla and TR07 coming on as sub for any of the advanced midfield 3 positions.

I went for the OX instead of Cazorla from the start for the simple reason that Hull were slow and had the OX been playing from the start we would have been better from the start since we would have stretched their back four on both length and width.

I become angry when I see things which are so simple yet AW keeps on doing the same thing over and over again.

  35. rico says:

I don’t want us to sign Kallstrom Scott, imho the one player who seriously needs replacing in the summer is Abou Diaby.

Get a power horse b2b/HM in the door asap and a top class striker.

Then address the rest before the window closes.

  36. rico says:

Neither do I devil, let him come off of the bench towards the end IF and that’s a big if, we are winning comfortably but I just don’t see the point in playing him for the sake of it…

Hopefully we’ll suffer no more injuries between now and then…

  37. Scott from Oz says:

Rico, from the little i have seen of Kim, he wolud be a decent squad player, imo.
Although i feel sorry for Abou, he must be replaced.

  38. rico says:

But if AW kept Kallstrom Scott, he might be too tempted to neglect signing a proper DM/HM.

Mikel will be another year older, as will Kallstrom and we have to stop ‘making do’ if we are going to be serious contenders…

  39. rico says:

I was surprised OC didn’t start Devil but could be that the semi-final took a lot out of him. I suspect he’ll start next Monday at home…

  40. Adam says:

Oz. United offered very little. I believe Martinez is still dissecting the match on Sky as we speak. He’s been going for about 16 hours now but so far it’s been largely about him and what a genius he is.

  41. ozgunner says:

10.59am been the essence of Arsene Wenger for so many years now and i don’t see it changing now – so hope i am wrong – i see one around the 20/25m (maybe and likely less) one maybe two other wanna be’s at best and maybe a free from somewhere

  42. ozgunner says:

Hats off to him Adam, he’s done well, very well and might still pull off the impossible given the 2 teams resources. Moyes seem to be saying United controlled the game. Never saw any of it so no idea

  43. rico says:

I don’t see it changing either Oz, but if he’s staying for another couple of years, I sure hope we are wrong…

  44. frednerk says:

Bit surprised Hull even tried to play a part in this game,
    if we get 4th spot,
Hull will be in the Europer cup..funny old game.

On our squad size and players needed,if wenger can find a true leader to captain us,a player who will be prepared to fight for our club..we may not need as many players as most people are saying.
Its a leader on the pitch, someone to protect our young players, when the big tackles start going in,away from home,
when we think back,we had several leaders,
Frank,Tony,Boudy,Ray,The Great Patrick,Sol even Ralph new when to get stuck in.

  45. Adam says:

Oz. That’s strange. It is just what Martinez himself said “Hats off to me and my Catalan genius”. He then went on to describe his life and the way that he fed 5000 Barcelona supporters with a basketful of Hake when he was only 6 months old.
Poor old Moyes’ brain is addled with the Botox toxin. He knoweth not of which he speak.

  46. ozgunner says:

nearly 62% possession to United and almost twice the passes – uumm seems Moyes might have a point, we’ve been here often enough

  47. ozgunner says:

must have been a rather satisfying win for him, that is for sure. United fans are grumbling big time ha!

  48. frednerk says:

Dg..Hope wengers not reading your 10.35 on Aurier,
    he might just say,
I have just signed a muti-functional player why do I need to go into the transfer window.

  49. rico says:

fred, I read that about Europe too, I bet Hull want to us get that place because then regardless of what happens in the FA Cup, they will be on television on Thursday nights….

I think we need 3/4 top signings in the summer before anyone leaves, and yes, there has to be a bit of guts/leadership in amongst them….

  50. Lee says:

62% or 99% possession neither here nor there they scored 0 and Everton scored 2…….the most important stat!!! 😉

  51. ozgunner says:

yep i know Lee – we’ve seen this argument on here so many many times concerning ourselves but of course you are right.

  52. Lee says:

Still RVP will be enjoying the “footballing” reasons for joining manure! I mean that midfield (apart from mata) must be a joy to play in front of?!?!

  53. frednerk says:

    Oz,
Its very rare that a coach will have the same session each day,
this stage of the season, once again going back in time,
a well known secret was that match fitness was not what was required at this time but sharpness,so most of the sessions were built around 5/6 a-side keep ball.
How our players pick up these muscle injuries and hamstrings
    beggers belief.

  54. Lee says:

Oz, maybe someone should tell Arsene that having a final product after having all the possession during a game wins games!!! Just a thought…..

  55. ozgunner says:

He wanted the title and got it, he would never have won that with us while Wenger is around (only my opinion) got a huge wage rise as well, win win. Funny how our fans are so much more hostile than our players towards to the lad. Always found that odd

  56. ozgunner says:

fred – agree mate, when i was at it, had my team continually been going down like this lot you’d have to ask a question or two surely, right?

  57. devilgunner says:

    lol Fred. 😀

I guess RVP is feeling like the man who had it all with his wife but then he saw a very sexy model lookalike who heated his little boy inside beyond the 100 degree mark. He went off for a fling with her and the first night was out of this world. He dumped his wife for the new hot chick only for the latter’s false teeth to come off, she likes to see other men and she pays them for sex instead of them paying her, the mascara is washed out, the beautiful wig covers her short boyish hair and her nails are false.

If his former wife does not take him back then daily sessions of self wanking will soon be the norm of the day for him. 😀

  58. Uzochukwu says:

    Nice post Jude.

One wonders if Poldi’s left foot would not be better utilsed if he plays right wing. Cutting in and launching a rocket just like Robben, and Bale in his Tottenham later days.

  59. frednerk says:

Possession football only works,if when you you lose the ball you work your nuts off to get it back.
Unfortunatly wenger got the first bit right, but has’nt worked out the second phase.

  60. Scott from Oz says:

Oz, i am not suggesting our biya have been great, but those we sold have had more impact on the club.

  61. ozgunner says:

screws over his misses, breaks the club rules, plays like a plank for weeks over it and we’re proud of his character, still trying to work that one out

  62. devilgunner says:

    me??? no mate.

but RVP will soon have to be enjoy himself with the playboy version if AFC do not take him back. If Cavani gets signed by Manure then I doubt he will get a look in with RVP and Cavani around.

  63. rico says:

Uz – I often say the same about Theo, play him on the left and I think he’d be a lot more productive…

  64. devilgunner says:

and sitting on the bench he will have to take various playboy mags with him until he gets a look in. He might have to go to AW to get private lessons how to work out the zipper because he is going to have lots of time zipping up and down his zipper while on the bench.

    geddit???? 😉

  65. ozgunner says:

Devil – they are talking serious serious investment this summer, have not taken to being out of the picture well. Be interesting to see who they do actually buy and sell

  66. devilgunner says:

With Theo on the left, OX on the right and Ozil behind a central striker our MO11 will win the player of the year by December.

  67. ozgunner says:

how dare you question the golden boy Adam – we will buy but he wont be challenging the playboy i tell ya that. Wenger has a right hard one for this guy, god knows why at 13% conversion rate

  68. rico says:

I didn’t realise that neither Jelavic or Shane Long will be playing in the final.

Two of their better players yesterday so that’s good news…

  69. tsgh says:

This was the 2nd season since Aw joined us that we had not sold anyone big star… the last time before this season was the season Sol joined us…

I think Aw messed up with the DM/CM recruitment…

When the club delibrately leaked rumours of our link to Gareth Barry to test the reaction of fans; AW should have gone for him instead of Flamini imho…

If we had gone for Barry we may have won 1 or 2 more games against City and the dippers and most definitely Everton imho…

  70. rico says:

Neither would I Lee, he’s made his bed!

If Fabianski goes, yes Oz and the same if Sagna goes… But for me, the striker/HM are vital as other clubs will be looking around…

  71. Lee says:

Cup tied Rico, just hope we don’t get complacent on 17th on the back of that 0-3 win…..I’m sure our motivational manager will get them up for it!!!

  72. ozgunner says:

Its got Birmingham written all over it Rico, one house race, one dog kennel, one horse town but we know better don’t we 🙂 We’ll make hard work of it either way in all likelihood

  73. rico says:

I didn’t realise Lee, but I’m glad. Totally agree, yesterday means nothing as Hull will be up for the cup…

    🙂 re our Mr Motivator

  74. tsgh says:

The striker signing will be a tough one though..
Considering Callejol has been more influential than Higuain for Rafa its a huge gamble with strikers these days…

There are some very young ones like Drmic of Nuremburg who I rate; the few times I have seen Immobile he has looked very solid…

Antonio Cassano of Parma has only scored nine this season, just about making the cut-off point in that regard, but he is one of only two players in the top five leagues to have achieved the massive haul of 70 chances created for the season. That’s a rate of 3.3 per 90 minutes—the best out of any forward on a per-90 basis—while he also registers an impressive 61 percent of his shots on target.

Former Yanited striker G rossi was having a stellar season before he got injured he could be another option even though at 5’8 Rico might disagree…

    Its a shame about Lukaku’s injury…

There are a few ligue 1 strikers knocking about like Lacazette but like 1 strikers are not made like they use to before…

I wonder how our pretense around Greizmann went?

For me Lavezzi, Balo’ or Mandzukic for me…

  75. ozgunner says:

thought Hig has had a great season tsgh – last i saw it was 16 in 32 and i think he scored again last time out to make it 17 now? He’s top producer there is he not? the other lad wasn’t far behind but he’s played more games as well. Will have to look it up as not sure of those figures just what the TV said

  76. potter says:

City would have sold Barry to us but not loaned him. They felt that they were in for the title and didn’t see Everton as a force to worry about. Regular football is necessary at his age , he has had it this season and has recovered his form consequently. Had he come to us , he would have been able to take Jack under his wing and make him a better player. He has the experience that Jack needs to learn from.

  77. tsgh says:

Callejol is not an out and out striker and creates chances too.. hig is a passenger imho… his goals have come against less number of teams too…

Immobile has 20 goals and he plays for Torino top player imho…
In my opinion we have too many bottlers and passengers we don’t need another 1 especially in this league…

Dev, Larsson’s contract ends this summer with Sunderland; would you go for him if you were AW… he could do the Milner job in the bigger games

  78. rico says:

Let’s be honest here, how many of us wanted Barry last summer?

I don’t think there were many as we all hoped for someone younger and better but now he’s had a decent season, it’s maybe easy to look back and think we could, should have signed him…

  79. ozgunner says:

tsgh – i want pace pace pace mate in the summer, all these slow pokes. Any slower and we’ll be kicking the wrong way 🙂

  80. potter says:

Agreed Rico , he would not have been my choice but Kallstrom – Barry -Kallstrom , in the words of the great Homer :- DOH!

  81. tsgh says:

Oz, true but I have 3 issues with Higuain..
    1. he is a well known bottler
    2. he does not work hard enough… imho Soldado was far better and lets look at his productivity in this league…
    3. he is not a lone striker type unlike OG12

I would have like AW to have given Theo a few more chances next to OG12 in the current 4-4-2 system but Theo could not read the game to save himself imho…

  82. rico says:

I stand corrected then Ts, I don’t recall Kev having that view though but I have slept since then 😉

Mine neither Potter, spot on though, Barry over Kallstrom, his PL experience alone would have made a huge difference…

  83. ozgunner says:

34 goals behind Liverpool 26 behind City, these are huge stats and despite the praise from us our defence hasn’t exactly shone either – lots of work to do

  84. tsgh says:

Apart from Rico, I was arguably one of Theo’s biggest supporters with my view that he is a big game player but he made 20 appearances before his injury and scored 6 times…

He scored 2 goals each against City and WHU; 1 goal against Cardiff and OM…

I think he had a poor 12 months but maybe was just coming to form before his injury…

Before his 2 goals against WHU on boxing day and his 2 goals against City 12 days earlier most fans were wondering why he was being played instead of Serge on here…

  85. tsgh says:

Lol Oz, a bit unfair comparing an international star like Hig to Sir-no-goal… 😛

RM wanted £35M for him though and I thought we had only £45M budget contrary to Sir Ivan ‘we can compete’ Gazidis comments…

  86. ozgunner says:

we have so many of these types when you think about it – how many can we actually say can be relied on in the big big games?

  87. ozgunner says:

bit of tongue in cheek mate as you picked 🙂 it was more the fact we had been left in that position but of course King Bent was going to finally prove Wenger right this year wasn’t he?

  88. rico says:

If we are to believe AW, Higuain was never really a ‘top target’….

Wonder if the club have any striker targets in mind yet…..

  89. tsgh says:

Our season could have even been worse if Ozil did not truly want to play under AW…

Did Ozil not take a pay cut to join us… the reason the deal was delayed and according to rumours Mustapha was still touting him about to Yanited and Psg…

The same as LS07 too; when IG was busy telling those who will listen that we can now compete he was only prepared to match Suarez’s fees when they was no guarantee he would win a trophy with us…

    LS07 stayed and earned 80% more….

As I always say IG always talks the talk but when it comes to walking the walk he falters… then again I admit AW hypnotizes me so… lol

  90. rico says:

I think IG talks the right talk, just someone who works alongside him, dilly dallies far too much and doesn’t act quick enough. Sometimes, not at all….

  91. tsgh says:

Negredo was the striker we were going for according to Seville and the player himself…

A deal was agreed but like Ribery and Mata we were dragging our feet on payment terms and agent fees etc…

  92. ozgunner says:

if someone says to you “fine i want him but will only pay this” makes it a tough job in the open markets at times

  93. rico says:

Exactly Oz. As we all say so often, name the players and then bugger off and leave the rest to someone else.

He might do that this year as he’ll no doubt be sunning himself in Rio…

  94. tsgh says:

I though IG said the Havard analysts dictate how much we spend on players salary?

I am still under AW’s spell so forgive me… 🙂

  95. ozgunner says:

dunno Rico – his we work on this everyday worries me a bit. I mean how long does it take to hand a bit of note paper to someone

  96. tsgh says:

what happened in 2010 and 2012?

AW will in the end have to come and do the deals after the world cup as Dick n Fox will most probably say to the player and his agent ‘you are privileged that we are even discussing with you’… 😉

  97. ozgunner says:

He’s made a big deal of getting in early mate and as i am typing this i wonder why i am bothering given his last 3 years summer remarks, damn it

  98. tsgh says:

    Ivan Gazidis..

Billy Beane explained it simply as “getting the most out of your dollar, or pound.”

The revered baseball tactician emphasized it was not about buying cheap or spending less, but it was about value.

“There is a misconception that you never pay much for anybody, but that is not true at all. You want to make sure you are getting more value than you are paying. That may come in the form of a very expensive player, or it may come in the form of a very young player, but it is not about being cheap or not spending money,” exclaimed the icon of modern baseball management.

Looking at this past few weeks’ media coverage on Arsenal’s Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis giving insights into Arsenal’s much anticipated flexing of their financial muscle, one could have mistaken Billy Beane sitting in Gazadis’s hot seat.

Both men sought to dispel the myth that professional sports clubs should instill a maximum price on recruiting any athlete. In the end, it all boiled down to the value which any athlete gives the club, not so much within that particular time and circumstance but for the future returns, and no, nothing about the price.

“When you come back to the socialist wage structure or limit on transfer fees we would pay, these things don’t really exist. It really depends on individual circumstances and how much Arsene believes a particular player is the critical piece for us.”

Gazidis almost sounded like he was about to splash the cash this summer, especially with all the talk about Arsenal being able to recruit Rooney or even Messi. Yes, Arsenal’s hands, bound tight over the past few years by their Emirates stadium investment, are definitely a lot looser for the fabled big dip into their pockets for this summer’s recruitment.

But one suspects the underlying message was simply that there are very few players in the market who are able to add the extra value into the Arsenal squad and who are worth their price tag. Summer shopping with the Arsenal Football Club does feel like being the hopeful child forced into a trip to the stores with the aunt who keeps reminiscing about her last mercurial find in the discount bins.

There must be more than a few Gooners out there hoping Arsenal’s much touted Harvard analysts miss a few zeroes in balancing their spreadsheets this summer and instead top it off with a bit of football romance by snagging a so-called big name player. But before we jump off the ship of sabermetrics into this sea of summer speculation, let’s knock some sense back into that romance.

Gazidis reminded us, “We have outperformed our spend in virtually any metric you can look at consistently for the last 15 years. It’s an extraordinary record. So we are doing something right in the way that we spend although it may frustrate some people.”

  99. tsgh says:

    Gazidis last summer:

In giving hint to Arsenal’s favor for the Billy Beane methods, Gazidis revealed the brains behind their recruitment strategies, “There is a massive amount of thought that goes into it by some very very smart and thoughtful people at the club including Harvard analysts and Arsene Wenger himself is a pretty smart mathematical guy.”

  100. tsgh says:

IG is as I always say a Carnegie graduate..

You would think he was trained by one of the top 4 espionage/counter intelligence agencies in the world with his ‘double speak’ messages…

Last years Q&A he delivered a message framed around his 4 take home points; these were:

    1. We have £70 million to spend on players transfers.
    2. We can compete with the big clubs.
    3. We will spend £200,000 on players wages.
    4. Wenger is responsible for the Socialist wage structure and has complete control over wages

Q: For example, would you be able to buy a player for £25million and £200,000 a week?

IG: “Of course we could do that. We could do more than that. We have a certain amount which we’ve held in reserve. We also have new revenue streams coming on board and all of these things mean we can do some things which would excite you. What excites Arsene isn’t necessarily what excites you. We can think about all kinds of things. The important thing for us as a club, and it may frustrate everybody but we don’t think about what’s going to excite our fans for the next couple of weeks, we think about what’s going to excite them when we start playing in August and hopefully when we’re in March and April and competing. That’s what we’re focusing on. For Arsene, it’s a question of getting the right players, the ones he believes in, not necessarily the players the fans want. He’s very disciplined about his beliefs and how he wants to structure a team. And he’s done a fantastic job at that over a long period. He has new tools available to him financially and I think he’ll make good use of them.”

And Ivans answer is true but only refers to buying one player not multitudes of players.

  101. rico says:

I’m sure with the money we have squirrelled away, we could have signed at least a £25m striker and not all would demand £200,000 a week…

  102. tsgh says:

To me IG is like Mandelson or Kissinger as AW is like Tony Blair or Bill gates or Bush…

Most are front men who are paid well enough to take the abuse…

Finally from last year’s AGM and Q &A…

Q: In the past, Arsene Wenger has called the wage policy a “socialist wage structure.” While we may smile about that in football, is it time for it to change?

IG: “Our biggest expense is our wage bill. It’s not something that we simply stumble upon by accident. There is a massive amount of thought that goes into it by some very very smart and thoughtful people at the club including Harvard analysts and Arsene Wenger himself is a pretty smart mathematical guy.

I have been doing that myself for 14 years at Major League Soccer, where I was responsible for the management of the player pool within a budget.
This is something we think about deeply and we know a lot about. We have outperformed our spend, in virtually any metric you can look at, consistently for the last 15 years. It’s an extraordinary record. So we are doing something right in the way that we spend although it may frustrate some people. We are doing something right and we are very thoughtful about it.

“It’s not something that happens by accident. As we develop new financial capabilities, clearly, that wage bounds will change. It’s under review all the time. It’s never been fixed in stone. It really depends on what the circumstances are as you move forward, what the market looks like, where you see the opportunities, where you think the value is. That will change and if we – which we do – want to attract and also keep the very best talent then we have to pay them the market rate. There is a complete understanding of that at the club. So yes, our wage structure will evolve, as it has over the last five years. It will continue to evolve with a new financial capability behind it, which means we can do some things perhaps that we haven’t been able to do while we have had one hand tied behind our back.

Doesn’t sound like Wenger is on his own making the call on wages from this.
    ——————————
Did anyone notice the classic double speak in the second paragraph; He mentions AW’ full name for it to register to the audience but softly say ‘I’ by referring to a past even that sub-consciously won’t register.

He then kickly say ‘we’ so as not to expose himself to any blame…

The man is a pure genius…

  103. tsgh says:

How and when the salary lie came about imo…

In JAnuary last year during the time we were negotiating Theo’s contract when he couldn’t stop scoring…
Wenger defended the clubs offer of £90k to Walcott and described our wages structure as “We have a more socialist model”

This was translated into to press speak and headlines the following day as…

Arsene Wenger admits he is responsible for Arsenal’s much-maligned ‘socialist’ wage structure.

‘I decide how much my players get paid’: Wenger reveals Arsenal’s ‘socialist’ pay structure

Arsène Wenger has offered a fascinating insight into how he sets a “more socialist model” wage structure at Arsenal and how he believes that the looming financial fair play will end the era of players being paid £200,000 a week.

once again by the wonderful British press make a mountain out of a mole hill…

The only time I can remember anyone taking credit for our wage structure was Fiszman (RIP) around 2008.

  104. goonster says:

In arsene in trust…oh how I loathe that “tall prick”…thanks to him loserpoop ll be crowned champions and Steven mee ll be smiling like a pig at stuck. Gosh I hate him. Moaning all.

  105. Herb'sArmy says:

    Hi Rico and HH.
    Thanks for the write-up, Jude.
Great win yesterday, obviously, but I’m finding it harder and harder to get excited about Arsenal these days.
The title is now out of reach and suddenly we start performing.
The contrast between a club that expects success and a club happy to fleece their fans?
Arsenal get thrashed 3-0 at Everton, the BoD are delighted with Wenger’s work.
Man Utd lose 2-0 at Everton, they’re preparing to sack Moyes.
Yes, I know they’ve had a massive fall from grace, no CL football next season, sworn enemy winning the title etc., but that is passion and desire and taking decisive action in the face of adversity.
A refusal to accept stale mediocrity.
Will Stan Kroenke or Arsenal respond?
    Not a chance!

  106. goonster says:

You said it herb…that’s how you know a champion club. Arsenal is shit as long as that that arsene is in charge. Am tired of folks moaning about kroenke. Yes he is a dick and we all despise him buy assend is the one who picks the team and plays the same way against all opposition. I don’t remember seeing kroenke on the subs bench.

  107. potter says:

Its a double edged sword. Kroenke has the final say and he supports Wenger . So if Wenger is not doing his job its down to Kroenke to do something about it. Kroenke is happy Wenger is too and so is Gazidis .The only ones that are not is a proportion of fans and not all of those.

  108. rico says:

I blame Kroenke first and foremost, he is the only man who can make things change, but as Potter says, he’s happy….

  109. rico says:

I guess the Glazers don’t want Moyes wasting their money in the summer….

Was good thanks goonie, and yours??

  110. goonster says:

Nah I think they want van gaal. At least the Dutch press thinks so…my easter was fabulous maam. Had a swell time.

  111. goonster says:

It’s really going to be a tough one next season and with yours truly in charge I won’t bet a rat’s ass on our chances of playing in Europe. I fear for us rico

  112. goonster says:

Am not overly fussed with manure or the chavs my worry is I don’t want wenger here next season. A younger coach ll be bring out the best in our players. A part from Suarez and maybe gerrard which other player from poop can make it into our side? Arsene must go. He just have to.

  113. Joaquim Moreira says:

    afternoon all
we need midfield stronger and young players and a diferent way of “looking at” each game.We aren’t closer and together enougth. Moreover, I don’t understand why we give so many balls to our nº1, for shooting to Sagna or through out…

  114. Herb'sArmy says:

    Hi Goonster,
Kroenke is as much to blame for Arsenal’s lack of passion as Wenger.
Look at the American owners of Man Utd and Liverpool.
The Glazer’s may not have known quite what they bought into initially, but they were soon put in the picture by the fans who protested so much, some of them formed a new club. Alex Ferguson would have taught them about the club’s history, their community, Munich 1958, the whole package. And if they didn’t know who or what Manchester United were before they arrived, they certainly do now. Their fans aren’t prepared to passively bend-over and be shafted by a rogue owners lack of hunger or desire, which is exactly why they’re getting rid of Moyes.
Same for Liverpool. Gillet and Hicks saw Liverpool as a chance to make a quick buck, what they hadn’t accounted for was the raw passion of the fans, and they were sent packing, tails firmly between their legs. Enter JW Henry and the Fenway Group, whose ambition is to take Liverpool back to where they were in the 1970’s and 1980’s, and they have the financial power to do so. That’s why Kenny Dalglish was sacked. A 7th place finish, a League Cup and losing finalists in the FA Cup just wasn’t good enough.
Then look at Stan Kroenke who has no affinity with Arsenal or their fans, and whose only ambition is to make money, and our fan-base just aren’t as angry or as passionate as either the Manchester United or Liverpool fans, which is why Kroenke gets away with doing what he wants.
Arsene Wenger’s crime is that he is complicit, and is ridiculously over-paid for his compliance, and the lack of transparency in communicating with Arsenal supporters.
Having said that, if we behaved with the same passion as those other two clubs, the situation at Arsenal would drastically change.

  115. goonster says:

I want Conte or the pragmatic Diego Simone. Both coaches ll put maureen where he belongs plus make us a Fearsome force again. Wenger had gone stale limp and devoid of ideas. Those clamoring for him to renew his contract are not arsenal fans. End of.

  116. goonster says:

Herbs I get it….yes we know he is the main culprit but arsene picks the team. Plays the same tactics and run the players into the ground. Year after year jack Wilshire goes missing for huge chunks of the season. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

  117. rico says:

Goonster, I think a few from liverpool would get in our side. Sturridge & Sterling to name just two…

  118. goonster says:

This is the same man that said we need to sign a new striker cos OG can’t carry the team all by himself all season long. And guess what that was before theo’s injury.

  119. goonster says:

That’s a lie maam. I beg to differ. I ll take theo over porridge any day and aoc over sterling. Gosh is it because they play for us everyone thinks they are shit. You know what loan aoc and theo to everton and let Martinez work his magic on em. You ll be astounded.

  120. rico says:

Trouble is Herb, The Emirates is no Anfield or Old Trafford, there are too many JCL’s at the matches and the stewards make sure the place is all nice and calm…

If things remain the same, the fans who go to the home games will surely start to make their voices heard, or they will simply not go.

But, as long as each summer the ST’s are sold, Kroenke wont give a toot…

  121. rico says:

We’ll have to agree to differ Gooster, you know I love TW and OC, but Sturridge is a better option than Giroud, and Sterling is a nippy little player who would fit right in imho…

  122. Herb'sArmy says:

Wilshere isn’t the only one who goes missing, Goonster, we lack big game players all over the pitch.
Man Utd only won one game against the top six this season, guess who that was against? In fact, we’re the only side in the top six not to score against them.

  123. goonster says:

Yes because Rodgers play to their strength. No tippy tappy crab like football. Theo is the bullet just lob the balls to him and he ll do the rest. The same with most pacy English players. This is the same player Messi is known to have said he fears most. Side ways passing is our bane ma

  124. rico says:

Agree Herb, and we need to sign a few who have those kind of qualities.

I cannot believe who average/poor we were against the mancs!

  125. rico says:

I keep hoping and praying the ‘big fella’ is watching on with a cunning plan to rescue us Herb…

  126. Adam says:

Afternoon Rico. You lot better be careful. Scott will give you all a clip round the ear for your negativity.

    Goonster.

  127. rico says:

Afternoon Adam, we are safe, Scott is in the land of nod… lol

Afternoon Kt, how are you? Long time and all that jazz….

  128. rico says:

Aren’t we better than that though snazzer?

What if we lose the FA Cup and Everton pip us to 4th spot?

  129. goonster says:

Titi Henry the best striker the epl had even seen (that includes fuck face Shearer) didn’t terrorize defenses playing tippy tappy crab like football. Put Henry at his prime in this team and he ll struggle too!

  130. rico says:

    🙂 Adam…

Herb, I forgot that Kroenke jnr was now on the board, lord help us eh… But I still hope that if things get worse, he’ll make a move, if not before then….

  131. rico says:

I think Henry in this side would have a ball, he’s just the kind of player we lack up front. Ruthless and lightening quick!

  132. Adam says:

There are going to be a number of truths we, as fans, will soon become aware of. I believe that the powers that be at our club care very little what we think. From what I can see most fans think that Arsene is past it but still feel a sense of loyalty to him. There is absolutely zero support for Kroenke and his ilk. We know why he is here and would like him to either get it together or bugger off. If Usmanov is ever going to make his move then surely it must be soon. Kroenke is tainted with an inert sense of failure and he has become a billionaire off the back of it.

  133. rico says:

I sure hope it’s soon Adam but the longer this all goes on, I wonder….

I wish Kroenke would bugger off right now….

  134. ktr7 says:

am fine guys.its not even funny how much better we look with ramsey and ozil in the side.what could’ve been…

  135. ktr7 says:

we really need that type of striker rico.a dynamic front line with that striker theo and ox with ozil and rambo in support would be too dynamic for anyone.we also need to have a better partner for ramsey.i think we’ll try bender again.

  136. tsgh says:

Hey kt where have you been?
Goonster,Theos style mainly works against 5pur2 and teams who play with a high line.

I also think most are wrong about ambition of JW Henry and the Glazers…
The dippers did not sack daglish for not finishing first or not winning anything..

He was sacked for not making the guest list for the CL…
Same as Moyes being sacked potentially…

AW has his charter and that was to take us into the CL spot.Until he fails with that we are just hazarding a wild guess at the owner really IMHO of course…

  137. tsgh says:

I find it funny how the pundits and other managers make a fuss about us finishing 3rd or 4th when all I hear other managers saying is their aim is to take their clubs into the CL..

Brenda has said live on tv after 2 conservative games that he was given 2 years to get into the CL stops and that it looks like they will be over achieving that?

When we made a bid for LS07 most pundits said it would be bad for them to sell to a team (arsenal) who they can compete with to get into the CL spot…

When Martinez was asked before his exist from the FA cup if his club chairman wanted him to win the FA cup like he did at Wigan? He replied that he promised Bill Kenwright that he would make the CL spot in 2 years…

When Roman and Chelsea sacked Di Matteo the official reason given was that they were concerned he would not make the CL spots again… considering he had done what AW has struggled to do in over 30 years of his managerial career 5 months before he was still sacked.

‘arry wass also given his matching orders for finishing outside teh CL spot… and so was AVB; for fear of not making the CL qualification…

City also sacked Mancini for not progressing beyond the first round…

When Pelle’ was eliminated this season he said on TV that the clubs aim was to go beyond the first round this season…

My point is that it looks like CL is what the chairpersons are looking for…

If they win something along the way then so be it…

  138. tsgh says:

I bet ‘arry’s reason for not making automatic promotion will be that he was forced to loan Remy… 🙂

  139. tsgh says:

If we consider that Chelsea have won over 10 major trophies since 2004 and are still posting losses of £40M plus each season.. no wonder Stan is not bothered to invest…

    Time for him to go…!

I am really surprised that a team like Arsenal do not have Joe Lewis or Ja ack Walker type figure to take over this club…

  140. tsgh says:

Rico, he is faster than OG12 which is not ahrd really.. 🙂

and I think Kev and Syg really like him… 😉

  141. tsgh says:

Rico, what do you think of Alex Sanchez?.. I thought we would have gone for him last season with Neymar arriving.

  142. tsgh says:

23 goals this season so I guess yes…

If you take out the services of Ronaldo, Bale, Alonso and the ex-sperds midget who RM shafted spurs for then I am not sure how prolific he is but… beggars can’t be choosers so…

  143. rico says:

Ratio is one goal every other game and 14 assists…

23 goals in 46 matches this season..

46 games in one season is a good start….

  144. rico says:

I’m not the one to ask really Ts, I don’t watch much football outside of the PL…

I quite like Southampton’s Rodriquez (spelling) Morgan and Lallana…

  145. tsgh says:

Me too Rico re the saints duo…

Not the out and out strikers but they can chip in with the goals and they work hard too…

  146. agirlagunner says:

Booooo!! 🙂 Some really good discussion today! 😉 Hey, Jude!

    Hiya, rico and ginge. Howdy?

United should keep Moyes. In two years, they would be in the championship. 😀

  147. rico says:

Hi agag, it’s been a good day 😉

Two years?? Nah, this time next season they’d be done for 🙂

  148. agirlagunner says:

rico, a busy day in the blog and everyone behaved. 😛 I hope your Easter celebration was good. We had an amazing pork roast for lunch. You’d have loved it.

ginge, Alexis Sanchez is a moaner; I don’t want him. He rather reminds me of Theo, he performs better when he goes on instinct, rather than when he “thinks” about that extra pass or that better angle for goal. He also reminds me of Chamakh, a classic confidence player and who, in Barcelona seems really lost.

  149. rico says:

Had a lovely weekend thanks agag, I am sure your pig was lovely… Once 😉

Hope you have had a good Easter too…?

  150. Herb'sArmy says:

    Hi Tsgh,
if you read back, I didn’t say Dalglish was sacked for not winning anything – he won the League Cup and lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup final. We’re essentially saying the same thing, it was finishing 7th – outside the CL places – that got him sacked.
As for Wenger, all he does is make excuses for continually falling short.
CL is crucial to Arsenal, yet Wenger has complained about the schedule. In January, Arsenal were top, and Wenger was well aware of the fixtures ahead – with the exception of the FA Cup. He knew Walcott was out for the season, he also knew Wilshere, Ramsey and Ozil were in the red-zone, but over-played them regardless. And quite why he put his strongest XI out against Coventry defies logic.
You can’t have it both ways. You either take the money and accept the schedule, or you opt out and become like Newcastle or Aston Villa. But Arsenal can’t do that because that would expose The Emirates move as a pure money-making scam.
He had only two more CL fixtures to fulfil (and even then he played Ozil for 40 mins with a hamstring injury).
He backed himself into a corner in the FA Cup, because of the two shocking performances immediately before the 5th round tie at The Emirates.
From the last time Arsenal were top, Arsenal have played four more games than Liverpool, which is very manageable with the right depth. It makes you wonder how Liverpool coped in the 1970’s/80’s when they regularly played 60+ games a season, with only one sub on the bench!
Mark Pougatch questioned Wenger’s logic after the lethargic 0-0 draw with Man Utd at The Emirates, commenting that Wenger loves this siege mentality of him against the world, and that he ham-strings himself with his transfer policy, as though he is trying to prove something to all his detractors. Pougatch asked if there was enough genuine ambition at Arsenal, and the answer he got in reply was ‘No’.
I genuinely believe Arsenal have an identity crisis.

  151. rico says:

Herb, I thought we moved to the Emirates to compete at the top….

    What a joke eh…. Sometimes I wish we’d stayed at Highbury….

  152. tsgh says:

You make a valid point H army… my post earlier was not necessarily aimed at you; nonetheless you are right that we were making the same points albeit differently…

  153. tsgh says:

HArmy… this bit …’But Arsenal can’t do that because that would expose The Emirates move as a pure money-making scam.’ summs it up perfectly…

  154. rico says:

So do I Herb, didn’t get to go often enough but loved the place, the atmosphere and everything really….

  155. Micko says:

Forget Benzema rico, can’t name my source but tsgh kept reminding me he was a french bottler all last summer !

Is Jude one of Scotts clan ?

  156. tsgh says:

    Night Rico..

Micko, I was beginning to wonder if you were the Pope since you had gone missing over Eostre?

  157. Micko says:

Confession tsgh, had to get a lot of my chest this weekend.

Herb, that’s an easy one to answer, it was all down to Fairclough…..supersub.

  158. Micko says:

tsgh, the weather over here has been unbelievable the last couple of days, a mini heatwave, normal service resumed from tomorrow onwards, lots of rain forecast this week coming over from all places France and Goner ‘that’s a fact’ Joe, I blame wenger.
    Back to work tomorrow.

  159. BrainwashedKev says:

Benzema would fit the bill as our marquee striker signing, but only if we cannot persuade Fulham to sell Darren Bent.

Ginge, you are correct, I would have taken Gareth Barry last summer…

Keeping Sagna, Vermaelen and maybe even Fabianski, would represent a good start to the summer for me.

I’d also keep Podolski. Selling him imho, would be idiotic.

Draxler, Benzema, Bender, Chambers, would do for starters next summer…

    OK, just off to Confessional..

    Night All…

  160. Scott from Oz says:

I genuinely feel sorry for Moyes….he has been left hung out to dry by prima donna ponces acting as footballers.
Wavy, Rico kindly permits me to copy the daily post on to a Facebook page i run, and since then, i have done a few posts for the House, but asked if anyone was keen and Jude put his hand up,
I am hoping for more from him, and others to follow suit.
I know Jude was very nervous about it, but i have told him it went over very, very well, so i am sure he will do more in the near future.
Anything to help the Queen out.
Adam, me responding was a safer bet than us beating Spuds home in the League 🙂

  161. rico says:

Morning Scott, I can see where you are coming from re Moyes. Seems the players wouldn’t play for him and some have gone moaning to Fergie…

What a mess. I hope Van Gaal takes over, he’s old and passed it!

  162. Adam says:

Morning Rico and all. A strange way to go about things. Leaking to the press that you are going to sack your manager within the next 24 hours before actually doing it. Classless, yet so very Man United.
Mourinho next would be lovely. 🙂

  163. rico says:

£10 million, ok, I don’t feel sorry for him one bit. Not bad for ten months ‘work’.

Lee, I thought Adam would beat you to that 😉

  164. Scott from Oz says:

I just saw the low grade act from Ramires….any action taken on it?
Lol Lee….fair call, but still, a terrible way for Yanited to handle things.

  165. potter says:

Sweaty’s stick together. Moyes didn’t stand a chance , Fergie set him up knowing that the squad was past it and that Moyes would be compared unfavourably to him throughout the season and that would continue the Fergie mythology. Question :- Any bones there worth picking ? We don’t want another Sylvestre.

  166. BrainwashedKev says:

And so, David Moyes rides off into the sunset…

    Who cares?

Looks like my lingering hopes for 3rd have gone down the pisser…
What was it in the end Rico, 3-1…

Hope that Shittie smash Everton now…

    Morning All btw…

  167. Lee says:

I’m up in Great Yarmouth with my son for a rugby tour at the start of May…..staying in a caravan dressed s a comic character! The joys of parent hood, I really can’t wait!!!

  168. potter says:

Comic Character ? Which one ? you’ll be fine in Yarmouth , let us know which site you are on and when you are there and I will give you some decent pubs and restaurants to go to.

  169. tsgh says:

Alan Brazil needs to watch his blood pressure… lol

Moyes goes and Talkshite reckon it should be AW instead… lol

    Morning Rico and all

  170. Lee says:

The Gerwankho costumes were totally sold out, I think it’s down to a star trek convention in East Anglia that weekend, apparently people use them as Klingon outfits!!!

  171. Lee says:

Before you ask Adam, the Chamahk outfits were gone too….. they double up as characters from Avatar! Hence Dennis the Menace!
