Ozil back at the weekend & Three hard earned points…

Morning all.

Tackles flying in at one point as were late clumsy ones too. A bit of bite and fury, a tame referee all topped off by a super free kick and a glancing header by Olivier Giroud. Soon after opening his account, Giroud should have made the game safe but he fluffed his lines….

How Tiote didn’t even find himself in the book for the continual fouling is beyond me. Quite fitting that one of his many fouls would result in the free kick to win the game.

As seems to be the case these day with referee’s Lee Probert didn’t hesitate to book our players though. Tomas Rosicky, Mathieu Flamini and Olivier Giroud were all deemed to have done enough to get into the book.

Szczesny appeared eager to get on the ‘assist sheet’ with his lazy clearance to Remy, Cazorla couldn’t find a team-mate and poor old Gibbs was on his own down our left hand side – Debuchy had a field day on the attack for Newcastle and as we attacked, Gibbs was offered nothing in support…

We weren’t much better down the right going forward as Theo insisted on drifting in instead of giving Sagna an outlet but after we took the lead and despite Newcastle throwing everything at us after that, we held on strong.

We were far from our best but we are the ones who have the three points on the board and sometimes, that’s all what matters, especially at a place like St James Park. We could have gone there and played them off the park with beautiful football and yet come away with nothing…

I know which I’d prefer…

Performances like yesterdays show a different side to Arsenal, the side which may just dig in deep enough to win something this season.

Arsene Wenger confirmed that Mesut Ozil has an inflamed shoulder, one which will see him miss the Cardiff fixture but could return for the FA Cup match against the neighbours. Thomas Vermaelen didn’t make the trip yesterday either, apparently he was suffering from a sickness bug.

Now it’s over to Arsene Wenger to get busy in the January transfer window….

That’s your lot for another day….

Good Morning Lady, Sir, Gentlemen and Ladies.

Fine match report Rico. I did not see the game itself as I was out with the family, but from what Pa told me it was pretty much the same as you reported.

As you said……we took the three points is what matters. I dont care how we take them. the best view of the league table is that at the end of the 1st round it is Arsenal who are on top.

On wednesday its against Cardiff. And its the spuddies against the manures. We win and they draw. that is my wish.

  2. rico says:

Morning devil, thanks but it’s not my finest hour…

Weather is awful here and the power/internet keeps going on and off so a rushed one…

  3. AndrewH says:

Morning rico and all, good summing up. We took our one chance of only two I can remember? Newcastle were woeful when shooting. Our central defenders immense I thought. Wilshere dictated what little play we had. Walcott – great free kick and Giroud deft glance.
Was Gibbs replaced at LB by Flamini for tactical reasons or did he take a knock?

  4. rico says:

Morning Ah. I reckon it was tactical, only because AW hasn’t said Gibbs took a knock. I suspect his little legs had run out of steam the work he got through…

  5. Adam says:

Morning Rico. Good post. With the three points in the bag I am not in the mood to entertain a post-mortem this morning. I always enjoy it when we beat Ifman Pardew, as in IF we had scored 3 goals we would have won or IF we had defended properly we wouldn’t have lost.
Terrible news about Schumacher. My thoughts are with him.

  6. rico says:

Morning Adam. Thanks. Can’t say I’ve got too much to moan about really after yesterday, going there is always tough so to grind out a result in the fashion we did wasn’t so bad….

Dreadful news, just been listening to the update and had MS not being wearing a helmet he wouldn’t have survived… Awful.

  7. Adam says:

Still, the transfer window opens in a couple of days so the new blood will shake us out of the seasonal torpor we seem to be sliding into. 🙂
Perhaps the poor darlings are just tired.

  8. stevepalmer1 says:

    Morning all Nice one Rico.
Yes the game was untidy, and yes again in your summery, we wasn’t at our best that’s for sure, but we held on as if our lives depended on it. Half way through our fixtures and we head the league can’t be bad, but i would say that we have rode our luck, I have never felt that we have been that lucky in the past, but the way we have struggled under emense pressure only says that we have tightened up quite a bit. If Ozil has a shoulder injury i’m a monkeys uncle, Wenger rested him as he was getting near the exhaustion stage, I don’t know how as we are only half way through the program, but if Wenger wants to call it injury that’s up to him. It was quite evident that we are struggling up front, not just with the striker position but the ones who should be feeding him, Going forward is painful at the moment, whether Wenger is playing players in positions they are not comfortable with is one excuse, but we lack pace and enthusiasm. Players seem rushed and they seem to feel safer passing back, It seems that the players who should be breaking forward seem to be out of idea’s. Playing football today seems to be easy for the onlooker but for the players they need an injection of talented players who’s sole intention is to get forward and score goals, that is what the transfer window is all about, The lads have done well up to now, better sides are in the league but we are above them, but we need an injection to keep us there. Spend some fffing money Wenger.

  9. AndrewH says:

Newcastle have some talented midfielders but how many chances did they create? Most teams are intent on closing us down at every opportunity, so both teams suffer from a lack of space. When its a stalemate like this game and Chelsea, its a case of taking the chance you get. We didn’t against Chelsea but thankfully did yesterday. Off to hospital for a shoulder Op, hoping they don’t cancel as cold still lingering!

  10. tsgh says:

    Good morning peeps,

I enjoyed reading your terse match report Rico.

SP1, you are a hard man to please so I know a socks for christmas is not for you. 😛

Then again I am easily pleased so… lol

I am with you Ah on NUFC’s form; with 4 wins out of 5 whilst we were potentially looking at 1 win in 5 if we had lost…

  11. devilgunner says:

    GWS Andrew.

what I have been noticing is that other teams do not try to create against us. its merely of trying to stop us playing. And that can be quite a hard thing to do. because once you do that you cannot change your style with only few minutes remaining.

  12. AndrewH says:

If I was a Newcastle fan, I would be disappointed with my own team but wondering if that was due to top-of-the-table Arsenal preventing Toon from creating much. So we must have done quite a lot right!

  13. AndrewH says:

I look back fondly on the George Graham 1-0 to the Arsenal days. Bit surprised with this team playing that way, but will take it!

  14. Bradsterbradlop says:

    Morning all,
Good match review as always Rico.
I still feel we lack pace and width.
I also agree with SP that the players don’t take responsibilty on the ball and take the easy option backwards. Schezny for me is having to kick the ball way too often and is a result of the players not trying to make themselves available and too easy to give responisibilty to the player behind.

  15. Canadian Gooner says:

Good Morning and a belated Merry Christmas to the Lady of the House and all fellow Gooners.

Rico – A terse but accurate report of the game. Not our greatest hour, but we ground out a win where we would have tied or lost last season.

I have to agree with DG – teams are trying to contain us and prevent us from playing our game. So, a win is a great result even if we didn’t play well. Also, it is good to see Arsene rotating the players on a regular basis instead of waiting for burnout or injury before substituting his ‘first eleven’ as in past seasons.

  16. Idris alooma says:

Wenger should use cazorla as central mildfielder nt ozil again. . . . . . Great performance yesterday. . . . Wish chamberlin quick recovery

  17. devilgunner says:

Aye Ginginho. we are all fine. here its cloudy and a bit rainy..the way I like it. I dont like the sun. and the temperature is a low one…around 10 to 12. for me its the perfect weather…..especially for long walks or jogging.

CG…what many supporters fail to see is the overall picture in the grand scheme of things. sometimes we have to grind out results, especially away from home. yes we got whacked for 6-3 against the SP–oilers, but at the end of the day its only 3 points lost. I would have been more annoyed and pissed off with a 0-1 loss than 3-6,especially as we had two good goals disallowed, a penalty etc. as I said immediately after the SP-oilers game…..I would gladly loose four games 0-10 and win the rest 1-0. that would give me an unsurmountable 102 points. who cares that the goal difference is 34 in favour and 40 against.

  18. Canadian Gooner says:

Ginge – The family are all well, thank you. My older son and his family hosted Christmas this year. It was the first time in over two years that that I have had the pleasure of dining with all three kids and all the grandchildren.

Everyone touroughly enjoyed themselves and appreciated and liked their presents. Christmas is so much better with young children around.

On Boxing Day, we all sat down and watched the West Ham vs. Arsenal game and followed that up with a big brunch. I haven’t eaten somuch good food in quiet a while.

It trust you and yours also had a good Christmas.

  19. HenryB says:

    Hi Rico,

It may have been a quickly written Post but it seems fine to me as it captures the essence of the game.

I am of the opinion that it is never a good idea to berate the team, as it is perhaps only helpful for the individuals concerned to let off steam but it never helps the team.

That said, it is also self defeating to pretend that a pretty dire performance was a good one. (Not that anyone on HH has done so).

What does matter and I think you have covered it, is that even when we do not play well collectively there are individual players like Kos, Mert and Rosicky who pulled the team through, and Theo and Giro, who did not have their best days, pulled off a piece of magic that landed the points.

The ability to come away with the points against any opposition when the team are not at their best, is at least as important as winning when all is going well.

  20. tsgh says:

Unfortunately, I am not so big on christmas and so mine was not as lavish as yours Cg. lol

I visited family 24th and 26th; and then had a lovely lunch at home on 25th. My lil boy seem to have enjoyed so…

  21. Canadian Gooner says:

DG – Yes, I think too many fans expect too much. It is great to watch the team play open flowing football, but some of the other teams do their best to stiffle us and prevent us from playing that sort of game.

If I’m forced to make a choice between playing attractive football and winning, I’ll choose winning every time. As you pointed out, in previous seasons we have played beautifully, but lost. The “one nil to the Arsenal” chant took me back to the George Graham era.

I also had a good laugh during the Chelsea game when the Arsenal supporters started chanting “Boring Boring Chelsea”.

  22. devilgunner says:

Regarding AW’s obsession with number 10’s………I have said it more than ten times I think…….

…..AW’s aim is to create a forward 5 of highly technical and footballing players who are not positional specialists. His aim is to have 5 hybrids FOOTBALLERS who can play in any position in the AM/F sector. They must be highly skilled individuals who combine physical speed with the speed of thought in the creation of footballing artistry couple with spatial awareness. Cazorla, Podolski, Ozil, Rosicky, Arshavin etc are all number 10 simply because the clubs they were in usually play them in that position. however, like AW, I feel that a proper footballer can play in any position in the W attacking sector of the team.

As always there is a flaw in this…….the Centre forward. He must be a position specialist, because the way we play we do need a big player as the spearhead.

  23. Canadian Gooner says:

Ginge – Ours was as more of a family gathering and celebration than a orgy of gift giving. Except for gifts to the young children (i.e. grandchildren) most were modest gifts.

My kids gave gifts to their own spouses, but noy to their siblings and their spouses. The emphasis was on family not commercialism. However, for me, it was great to have youngsters to lavish attention on. It’s great to have good reasons to shop in toy stores again.

  24. devilgunner says:

CG…..you waited all those FEKKING years to shop in toy stores again????? 😀 crazy maaaaannnnnn!!!!!

I used to do it even when I did not yet have the little one around. Especially toy model cars, lego and model aeroplanes. Blimey mate…..you only have one childhood. I am still stretching mine. 😆

  25. rico says:

Hi Hb, would have been all too easy to be very critical of many yesterday… But away and at St James Park, the points matter. If we can do the same at the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and the neighbours, I’d be happy 😉

  26. Canadian Gooner says:

Ginge – Maureen Yo isn’t nearly as cocky as he was the first time round at Chelski. He seems to have one eye looking over his shoulder most of the time.

One of the pundits on the Barcodes vs. Gunners broadcast mentioned that after Arsene, Pardew is the longest serving manager with their current teams. How times have changed, it looks more like the mangerial merry go rounds they have on the continent.

  27. Canadian Gooner says:

DG – I’m entering my second childhood with my grandchildren to play with. My kids might say it’s my third or greater, but I’m sticking with second and intend to enjoy it.

I’m as young as my grandchildren make me feel. I’m looking forward to the years of fun and games to come.

  28. devilgunner says:

When Maureen yoyo first came on the scene I told some of my friends that he is not a good coach and manager. They laughed at me and told me that it was all sour grapes. I told them……what if you put him in charge of building a team from scratch without that much money being available???? they still sneered at me.

they told me that he is the ultimate modern coaching manager.

Then CG comes up with an answer……Maureen Yo isn’t nearly as cocky as he was the first time round at Chelski. He seems to have one eye looking over his shoulder most of the time.

that explains what I saw the first time around. the ultimate modern coaching manager will never have …..one eye looking over his shoulder most of the time.

  29. tsgh says:

😀 Cg… was just teasing. You must be proud and grateful to have the good health to play with your grandchildren and still be on excellent terms with your own kids…

Not many people do these days so…

Not aiming to air someone’s news, but one of my neighbours will give an arm and a leg to see his grand kids but with all the money and all his 2 kids hate him so…

Being only in my 30’s I always pray I have the blessing to enjoy the richest of family gathering one day… seeing as the world is F’ed up. 😉

Dev- you have in fact made that observation frequently re. hybrid forwards. I agree with you a CF needs to be a CF etc…

  30. tsgh says:

Dev- what do you think of Laudrup as a manager?; as a footballer he was as good as they came in the no.10 role…

I always thought he was a nice man but he was too hungry for success as he was very successful as a player…

It appears he has or is suffering from the 2nd season syndrome again at a different club in a different league.

7 wins out of 29 since the CoC win is bordering on sack-able, seeing as he was fell out with Swansea owner last summer over spending…

  31. agirlagunner says:

    Boo!! Hello, all!

rico, I’m becoming less convinced that AW will get anyone in January. Would be a shame though as we have done well so far. Certainly better than what most pundits predicted.

Hello, ginge, dev, and CG!! 🙂

  32. devilgunner says:

there is only one AW replacement. And I have been banging the drum for him these past two years and this season has seen his stock rising. He plays the ARSENAL way, he has made a step up every year, has taken like a duck to water to a far hotter seat and has never had the luxury of working for an oiler, sheik or baron.

    Step forward MARTINEZ.

He should be the one to lead the club after AW.

Laudrup???? He is good. but I am not convinced.

  33. agirlagunner says:

January, Ginge. 🙁 They’re the last of the lot until I find a job. 😛

CG, great to hear about your Christmas celebrations; plus you are all Gunners so that is a plus. 😉 Imagine if one of your kids took a fancy to Yanited or the Totts. Eurgh.

  34. tsgh says:

😀 Agag… is that what you are telling yourself? …’ the last of the lt’ . 😛

Dev- I am all for Martinez too… I like Diego Simeone too but he looks like a ‘capo’ than a football manager. 🙂

    Rijkaard is another option too…

  35. BrainwashedKev says:

Rico, I’m sure I saw him shopping in Heal’s on Boxing Day…

He was walking ok if it was him…

And if it wasn’t him, then Abou has a ‘double’…

  36. BrainwashedKev says:

Ginge, Diaby’s return negates the need for the Arse to go for a Bender…

    Where’s my Grandson?
In the Hawley Arms upsetting everyone I suppose?! 🙂

  37. Wavy says:

Martinez for me. Swansea, Wigan, Everton he has improved all his clubs exponentially. He could improve Arsenal stratospherically, post Wenger, of course. If Le Chef signs a new one for 3 more years then, unless Everton are more successful than us, move to a new ground and win the CL, I think we could prise Roberto in our direction? However, if that is not possible perhaps we could turn to Bentner! I should think he will be ready to take on the role of becoming the worlds greatest coach by then!!

  38. devilgunner says:

    lol

what do you think of MArtinez KEv???

a couple of years ago I talked to you about him and we agreed that more time is needed.

Do you think that that time is near???

  39. potter says:

Weather report in Norfolk , very windy , fence panels down and trees a rocking about. Still they don’t put windmills where the wind don’t blow.
Yesterday’s game was a case of getting the job done . Sure we can play with a lot more panache but as has been said 3 points are 3 points and points win prizes. We have a few games coming up against some of the lesser lights but those points are just as important. Time to capitalise and stretch the lead at the top and if we keep winning we can’t be caught. With the squad so obviously tight knit we will have to be very circumspect about who we bring in. We don’t want to upset this particular apple cart.

  40. tsgh says:

Diaby’s return is like the masses awaiting the return of Elvis or 2Pac. 🙂

He is definitely an option in midfield when/if FIT

  41. potter says:

Diaby was recently photographed in Mecca , not the bookies or bingo hall, probably went for a divine healing package at a discount from Emirates tour operators.

  42. devilgunner says:

we dont want shadows of Asprilla haunting us. but we would do with squad players who can give breathing spaces during rotation.

  43. Canadian Gooner says:

Sister AGAG – I’m surprised Santa &/or Santi didn’t bring you any stylish footwear for Christmas.

As for your comment “Imagine if one of your kids took a fancy to Yanited or the Totts.”; are you trying to make me laugh or give me terrible nightmares?

  44. Wavy says:

Potter, are the trains running normally out of Norwich, do you know? Daughter’s there and supposed to be coming home today. Need to know cos if she is stuck then I can open another bottle of Cava!!
If you can’t help, it is of no consequence.

    Martinez plays our way, too!
Or will we employ Diaby as next manager/coach??? He would FIT the bill, surely!

  45. Canadian Gooner says:

Kev – You seem to be suffering some after effects of your cranial cleansing. Either that or the after effects of liquid ‘Christmas Chear’.

How are you? Did you have a good Christmas?

  46. Canadian Gooner says:

DG – Diaby will injure his leg(s) by tripping over his tongue and will be off to the specialist for major reconstructive surgery and a tongue trim.

  47. BrainwashedKev says:

Coach, re:Martinez, he has won a trophy with an unfashionable club, as has Laudrup…

He has a great opportunity, at Everton, to really show his quality as a Coach and Manager.
Not sure if he ‘The Man’ to replace Wenger…?!!!

And, tbh, we don’t know how long Arsene is gonna stay anyway…???

It could be 2 or 3 years. It could be 5 or 6…?
If Wenger has success this season, the contract he signs, may not be the last one Arsenal offer him….

But both Martinez and Laudrup are doing good jobs, one with a Provincial club, the other on limited resources…
I’d like to see Pellegrini at Everton and Mourinho at Swansea…

Then we would see how really ‘special’ they are?!!!

  48. devilgunner says:

    Mourinho at Swansea?????

if you said that in the morning I would have choked on my cornflakes or spluttered while drinking milk.

He would take to the job like a stewed chicken.

  49. Canadian Gooner says:

Kev – Pellegrini to Everton and Maureen Yo to Swansea would be very interesting to say the least. I doubt they would be able to keep them out of the relegation zone without the deep pockets of their current owners.

Just look at Maureen, letting Lukaku go on loan to Everton so he could keep Ba.

  50. BrainwashedKev says:

CG I am well, thank you, I guess you must be as well…?

I had a very nice Christmas, enjoyed several glasses of sherry.

Now I’m looking forward to the New Year where I may well treat myself to a couple o’ bags of crisps and some Twiglets…
A glass or two of Cream soda may pass my lips…

You know CG, sometimes you’ve just gotta let yourself go… 😉

    How’s your head btw? 🙂

  51. devilgunner says:

    hmmmmm Adam. that we understand.

But does Martinez stand you???? that is the million dollar question 😀

  52. Wavy says:

Thanks. Have they finished laying the 4′ 8″ track? I know they are very ‘go-ahead’ in East Anglia! 5.30 train I just got a telegram, Norfolk has yet to be fitted up with the new fangled telephone. Everything still done by hand or semaphore – apparently.

Wonder if Wenger will stay until he is 72, just to cock a snook (or snood) at SAF? Nothing would surprise me!
I’ve just heard that Diaby won’t be the next Manager as he has taken a fall and smashed both his hands and cannot sign the as yet, stii wet Contract. “After reconstructive surgery the position will be reviewed’ , a spokesman reported!

  53. rico says:

    Afternoon all..

potter, the weather has been similar here in Berkshire and we also have a couple of fence panels in dire need of some attention….. 🙁

Thankfully, things are calming a little at last….

  54. Wavy says:

Some of my fencing needs reconstructive surgery, like Diaby, 2 posts broken and the panels lying on the sod! Same old story. It happens every year, usually during the sprout season. You would think I should do more to secure assets, but ……you know…..I’m reactive not proactive, so it ain’t going to happen. As with Diaby you just learn to live with it! Or rather without it/them!

  55. devilgunner says:

That was one hell of a super pillow fight between me and the little prince. Two men….four pillows. and the bedroom nearly wrecked 😉

  56. tsgh says:

Dev- how did your pillow fight end? You got smashed by your prince again?

Next you will be going all american on us by having a slumber party. 😛

  57. devilgunner says:

we smashed each other to bits mate 😀

it was enjoyable. That was the 2nd one after the first one took place on sunday.

righto. off to buy the lotto tickets. I need to get rich 😆

  58. Adam says:

One who does the Quenelle Devil.
Rico. I think the problem is that Anelka wasn’t thoughtless and that he knew well what he was doing but believed that his gesture would not be understood on the terraces and TV studios.

  59. rico says:

Hasn’t he been in trouble before for something similar Ts?

Always irks me when a Frenchman does something like this…

  60. agirlagunner says:

CG, mind the grandkids, they may fall astray and support Barfa or Munich or whatever team is currently in “fashion”. 😉

Ginge, I did say “…until I get a job…”. Hello, Adam, I only ever understood quenelle in terms of dessert. This is so much less savory.

rico, I wish they would leave race/religious beliefs out of football.

  61. Adam says:

Rico. Agreed. The gesture has well-known connotations in France. To claim that he didn’t understand it is ridiculous. I hate this sort of stuff impacting sport and those that use their position within football to promote their ideologies. This is nothing new though. Remember Di Canio’s charming salute to the crowd?

  62. rico says:

Ts – both Adam and I believed Moyes would go for Barkley, we talked about it…. Shame AW isn’t thinking about him, the ideal solution to Rosicky’s departure…

  63. agirlagunner says:

Not yet, Adam. 🙂 I will earnestly start looking for one in January. 😉 I agree that Anelka and Nasri knew exactly what they were doing.

  64. tsgh says:

I agree Rico but a bridge too far now re. Ross to us; imho

We should have gone for him last summer when the world was talking Fellaini and Baines… He was very good last season but the media and motd were bigging up MF instead…

    You did Agag- lol

  65. agirlagunner says:

I agree re Viviano, rico. What on earth was AW thinking?

It would be a shame if Lew was to move to Bayern. He should just choose us. He’d be a star at AFC.

  66. Joaquim Moreira says:

I read somewhere , a few days ago, we are interesting in Batshuayi (Standard Liege) i Morata deal (?) break down.
Do anybody know something about this?

  67. tsgh says:

    Interesting stats….

    Sai ‏@gunnerthoughts 55m
    Long passing accuracy: Szczesny – 53%, de Gea – 39%, Mignolet – 35%, Hart – 36%, Cech – 37%. Improvement from 48% in 12/13 and 39% in 11/12.

  68. devilgunner says:

So mates…..the above translation of the Viviano situation is that he is not happy not to have played and is considering returning to Bologna.

  69. devilgunner says:

Max Kruse can play the false 9 to perfection. He is a very technical centreforward who can play the DB10 role as well. Personally I think he is better than RVP at the same age. however I am a bit apprehensive if he can adapt to the rigours of the EPL……

but I wish AW tries to get him.

  70. tsgh says:

    Night Agag…

Indeed Kruse has come along leaps and bounds.. seeing as he was sold by Freisburg for under £3M pounds 6 months ago…

  71. agirlagunner says:

Night, ginge. 🙂 I hope you didn’t forget to buy some good bubbly!

rico, haha. I hope you enjoyed your dinner. Tomorrow, everyone would be cooking up a fest, I’m quite excited.

  72. BrainwashedKev says:

    AdamAdam………..

So good, they named you twice… 😉

Yeah, I thought for a long time that Barkley will end up at Old Toilet…
He’s a Northerner & they have an aversion to the Bright Light’s of London.
He’ll stay Oop North, and anyway, Everton are ManUre’s ‘Feeder’ club….

  73. BrainwashedKev says:

Baines will eventually go the same way…

Martinez will sell Barkley to ManYoo, and then replace him with McManaman from Wigan…
    And so it goes!!!

  74. BrainwashedKev says:

AdamAdam, I was wondering if you was ever a fan of DjembaDjemba, DoubleDutch, or Neville Neville???

Ok, enough of that nonsense and frivolity, nightnight… 🙂
