One out, two in! Podolski & Sagna to Milan? All eyes on the FA Cup!

Morning all.

Having snapped up the signing of Nemanja Vidic, Inter Milan want to make Lukas Podolski their second signing in the summer. The Mirror report that Arsenal want to recoup much of the £11 million we paid for him. Not only do they seem to want our striker, well, winger under Wenger, they want Bacary Sagna as well. That’s if we are to believe the rumour mill of course…

News we didn’t want to hear yesterday wasn’t it. Jackie boy is out for six weeks with a bone fracture and yes, we all know that in reality means his season is over and all thanks to Daniel Agger. The same player who tried to batter Yaya Sanogo during our FA Cup victory over them. Nasty player!

Update: Arsene Wenger has confirmed Laurent Koscielny could also miss tomorrows fixture through injury.

Jack’s had a fair amount of criticism from a certain section of fans this season, some of whom believe he is responsible for slowing our attacking game down, well he’s out now, so we’ll see if his critics have been right.

But, as he heads into the physio room, both Kim Kallstrom and more importantly, Aaron Ramsey are set to leave it. Not sure if either are ready to play tomorrow so my guess is that either Flamini and Arteta will start, or the manager will play one of them alongside Oxlade-Chamberlain or Tomas Rosicky.

Talking of the Everton match, Arsene Wenger has been asked whether or not he still looks forward to the FA Cup as much as he did 15 years ago?

Yes, I have been lucky enough to win it four times, but unfortunately we haven’t won it for a long time now, so in fact I’m even more focused to do well in this competition. I would love the Club to win the FA Cup again.

Unfortunately sometimes the scheduling clashes with the Champions League. For example last season we had Blackburn at home in the FA Cup just before playing Bayern at home in the Champions League, so it was difficult to focus the attention completely on the Blackburn game.

Hopefully we have learnt from that though, and this year we won’t be distracted.

So, it’s quite clear from that comment that Arsene Wenger and Arsenal haven’t always been 100% focused on the FA Cup when a  Champions League fixture looms..

Why though I am not sure because I bet most Arsenal fans would love to see us win this old favourite English competition. I know I would.

1998 was a good year.....
1998 was a good year…..

We are set up to win one of the Domestic Cups as we only have a small and relatively weak squad when it comes to depth in strength so for me, trying to win the big European jug is a long long way from being a reality.

Of course Arsenal FC shouldn’t be in this situation, not now that we have oodles of cash locked away in the safe but until that is spent and we have the kind of squad which is capable of truly being able to win the Champions League, for me it’s a competition which should make way for the domestic challenge.

This season we have a similar situation in which we have an FA Cup fixture at home followed by a Champions League fixture just three days later. However, the difference this time around is that our fixture against Bayern is away from home and we are already 2-0 down.

Whereas last season their was hope for progressing through to the next round of the Champions League, this season, our task in hand is an almost an impossible one.

So, when Arsene Wenger says he won’t be distracted by the Champions League fixture this weekend, I hope he means it because the reality is, the FA Cup is our best chance to finally break our trophy drought and he and the players go all out to win in.

And of course, one eye won’t be on Bayern Munich…..

Don’t muck it up Arsenal!

That’s your lot, have a great Friday…..

For a grey old Friday, that is a nice footbally update, Rico. 🙂

I have seen the challenge on Jack by Agger a number of times and also a still photograph of the incident.

    So I have a theory.

Jack almost exclusively uses the outside of his left foot in all of his passing, and that means he always presents his unprotected foot to the studs of someone making a tackle, and risking the sort of injuries he is becoming known for.

There are no studs on the outside of a boot, and ill minded players know that and have no worries about getting a studded sole of the boot back when they make a tackle.

    Change your style, Jack.

    Morning Rico and all…

Where are Kev and Kev this morning? If I were you I would put them in the sin bin for awhile… 🙂

Good read…. section of fans criticizing Jackie boy? Not me… I only say he is over rated and all that you said in the post… 😛

Anyway, I wish him a speedy recovery as he is Arsenal true and true… we can’t afford to allow those types to not have a chance in the squad going forward…

England needs him too so hopefully he consults with the lady with the horse inside… 😉

Latest news Koscielny doubtful, Ramsey & Källström back next week.

So I guess it is Flamini and MA08 plus Ozil this weekend…

  3. tsgh says:

    Agree Hb…

I don’t like to criticize JW but I have been saying for awhile that he needs to change his style…

He can learn a lot from Edu’s old video if he does not want to watch the likes of MA08 in CM…

  4. rico says:

Ts, sorting deals out outside the transfer window has always taken place.

Just not very often are we that proactive….

  5. rico says:

Exactly Ts, our proactive starts 2 days before the transfer window shuts and it’s shocking and embarrassing….

I’m ok thanks, you ok after your train journey? 😉

  6. rico says:

Arsène Wenger has given an update on the latest team news ahead of Saturday’s game against Everton:
    on the team news…

Apart from Jack, we have a doubt about Koscielny who has come back with a hamstring problem and didn’t play for France. All the other players came back in a good shape.

on the chance of Koscielny playing…

His scan is clear but we will have to test him today.

on Wilshere playing again this season…

Yes [I expect him to]. There are 11 weeks to go, he will be out for six before he can absorb normal training. His injury will not stop him working on fitness so two weeks after [the first six weeks] he should be competitive. That means the maximum for him to be competitive in a game is eight weeks.

on the return of Ramsey and Kallstrom…

Aaron Ramsey is one week away. I think the next two games are coming too soon for him but for the weekend after [against Tottenham] he should be available. Kallstrom as well.

  7. tsgh says:

ha ha I am not to bad after the train journey…

The funny thing is I was telling a lady and her grandson to be cautious of the route and I ended up making the same mistake…

  8. tsgh says:

Have you read we are trying to get the FA to pay JW’s salary for the next 6 weeks?

We do not help our case do we???

  9. rico says:

A German reporter on SS’s has just called Per ‘The Big Fucking German’ live on TV…

Ooo Err, SS’s had to apologise 😛

    Morning All, Nice post Rico,
You know me and you often disagree Rico, and again today i’m afraid. Daniel Agger went for a 50 50 ball Jack kicked Aggers foot, Now no doubt Aggers a dirty B—–d but i don’t think in this case just my opinion. Jack has been out of sorts this season, and i for one am not to disappointed that he sits out, not a nice thing to say i know but he does have a few faults that get up my nose, Jack has a habit in my mind that he looks for fouls and i have to say that he does see a lot of ground, many may disagree and say he is trying to push forward, if he wants to know how to do that properly he only has to watch my old woman in a que, I had high hopes for Jack but his injuries for me has been far to many for what i feel he gives us. Jack being out for the rest of the season is typical, he isn’t robust enough in my opinion, enough said. Ramsey returning is another that likes the treatment table, and just before he got his injury he looked burnt out, his form had dipped and what with jacks form, having two in the team was a bit much, hopefully Aaron has had a good holiday and rejuvinated himself, as if we are going to win anything we need his form more like at the start of the season. Kalstrom i know nothing about but apparently he is handy and is fairly big, hope his back holds out. As for turning all our attention to the FA cup i disagree again, i think we should go hell for leather at everything were still in and give them all everything we have. Putting all your eggs in one basket is a recipe for disaster you should know that. Apart from that i loved the post. 🙂

  11. rico says:

    Thanks Sp.

The FA Cup is the next big game for us, all I am saying is focus on that and nothing else for one day.

Then worry about the Bayern game.

No way should AW be making tomorrows selection with Tuesday in mind, he should field the strongest and best equipped side to beat Everton and nothing else…

  12. stevepalmer1 says:

Fraid not Ginge, Looks like i may have misunderstood you again Rico, I’ll have to read slower 🙂

  13. tsgh says:

I was trying to imply you see things differently like Scott … 😛

Sp1, hopefully with Lukaku missing TV and BFG cxan handle Traore who is less mobile…

  14. rico says:

    Everton’s injuries:

Antolin Alcaraz could return for the visitors, but Phil Jagielka’s hamstring injury means that Roberto Martinez will continue with limited defensive options.

Joel Robles is set to continue in goal as he has throughout the competition, while Romelu Lukaku could return to the starting line-up after scoring off the bench in the win over West Ham last weekend.

Lacina Traore, who scored on his debut against Swansea in the previous round, misses out with a hamstring problem, as do full-back Bryan Oviedo (broken leg), Darron Gibson (knee) and Arouna Kone (knee).

  15. snaparse says:

nice read Rico…….wilshere should have asked to be substituted IMO…anyways I expect a dynamic side tomorrow so I hope to see the ox and gnabry in the starting eleven it’s not too much to ask for pace is it???

  16. stevepalmer1 says:

All i think we need Ginge, is for the team to turn up focussed. I think we can beat anybody on our day, but i have to say that Wenger is unsettleing players with contracts and whether he intends to keep others. Sagna for me has been a stalwart for years and he hardly misses a game and he works for the full 90, if i was him and i saw a guy like Theo getting a hundred grand for maybe 2 bursts and i have just run the full length of the pitch and back for 60 grand, id’e have the hump as well. Poldi on 80 grand plays one out of 10 games and a few others has to make a little unrest in the side. Pay him what his worth or fcuk him off.

  17. rico says:

Thanks snap. I hope we see both of those too….

And Sagna at right back to snuff out Baines, I wouldn’t play Jenks tomorrow…

  18. tsgh says:

Sp1, we share similar views on these topic re. team ethics and Sagna…

JW on 100k whilst Sagna is averaging 60k.. a bit on fair…

I know several on here did not rate Song but he was always making 40+ appearances per season but was lucky to be offered 55k… when he asked to be paid 70k, AW fell out with him… typical

  19. tsgh says:

When pundits claim JW is the best prospect since Gazza it makes me laugh…

When Stevie G though a bin-dipper was 21 or 22 he was playing LB. RB, RW, DM for liverpool…

He also learned his train from Hamman and helped the dippers to CL win…

What has JW done for us in all honest?… 4 good games in 3 years I think…

    Hi Snap…

  20. rico says:

40+ average performances though for Song.

A few balls for RvP wasn’t worth a huge pay rise, not when at the wrong end of the pitch he was giving away the ball and committing sloppy fouls which gave away far too many free kicks in dangerous areas….

  21. stevepalmer1 says:

Good points Ginge, yes i believe we share the same Views, The Is he an out and out Winger No, is he a powerhouse Midfielder no. Is he a CF No what the fcuk is he for a hundred grand its taken him 8 years to head a ball. And i reckon if you asked Sagna to go up front i bet he would and do a better job than the others coz the guy has heart.

  22. tsgh says:

”i have to say that Wenger is unsettling players with contracts and whether he intends to keep others. ”- I have to agree…

Players talk like the rest of us and it must be disheartening if the club will pay TR07 80k a week for playing 18 games a season whilst Sagna can’t get 90k for 3 years…

As I have been saying for awhile… lets do the maths… can we get a player who can play CB, LB and RB on less than 80k in this current market? This is not even taken into consideration, agents fees plus transfer fee of lets say 10M…

Everton did not even want to sell a 30 y.o Jagieka for less than 20M…

  23. tsgh says:

You have a point Rico re Song but I tend to disagree with the lob part.. 1 is by luck 3 or 4 times is no fluke… the issue was tactics on AW…

Aw wanted him to play the Yaya Toure role by winning the ball in the opposition half but he was playing next to JW/Cesc or out of form Ramsey and a newly signed Arteta. JW who averages just over 1 tackle per game but was meant to be the no.6 like Edu or Petit…

JW always run with the ball and when he gave it up… fans expected Song to be the one doing a 2 or 3 man job to track but just because sky said he was the DM…

Song was the box to box player in most games… when he played with a debutant Frimpong when Cesc and Nasri left Frimpong played DM…

Also when fans go on about MA08 being slow when on the other hand JW is 8 years younger and even slower and gives the ball away more than most in the team…

Saying that JW played his best game when Song was in the team… so he was not that bad.

I have been to games where fans will moan about Sagna being lazy and slow and all and then I am thinking are these guys being serious?

No top team even uses our Rhs when Sagna is playing because he is that good… moreover he covers for the likes of Ox and Theo on most occasions…

  24. tsgh says:

Don’t get me wrong I like Theo and he has his use…

I remember when I posted some stats here last year to say Theo’s stats were comparable to Mullers I was laughed at but now those same people say we miss Theo…

I just want him to work as hard as Gotze or Robben the diver or even Navas that is all…

  25. stevepalmer1 says:

I honestly think Sagna should go, He needs to spend the last 2 or 3 years where he is appreciated. I hope he leaves and finds a club that pay him well and let him build a few quid for his retirement. I would be sad to see him go but he is not appreciated for long service. As for Song i liked him, many on here didn’t but given a bit more time he could have been our Ya Ya and we kept Diaby Madness

  26. rico says:

I just think RvP was so so good he got himself in a position to get to the ball…

A hoof up front and the rest was down to RvP….

  27. rico says:

Sp, how can you praise Sagna as you did earlier and then say he should go?

Or do you mean if you were him you’d go?

  28. snaparse says:

hi ts…..like you I think if we let sag a go regardless of age would be foolish IMO..I don’t go to games always but watching on TV and stats u can see that he almost always c rivers the most grounds Even at 31…sagna is a very tactically disciplined player just as cafu was…they can always adjust with time imo

  29. tsgh says:

In my view Song was much better than how fans perceived him…

Yes he made stupid tackles but it may be due to being over played…

  30. rico says:

Ok, I’ll give him the odd one or two but that’s not enough to have ever convinced me he was anything more than average.

Anyway, he’s a Barca now and I bet the fans love him…..

  31. snaparse says:

it’s funny how people think walcott is not all that but he still outperforms every winger in the pl and most in Europe?? Im not saying Walcott is the best around mind u as I think he is kinda limited technically but the boys always turns up when we need him especially against the big boys but like ts I think he should word harder in the smaller games dou

  32. tsgh says:

Snap, it is sad when grafters are not appreciated imo…

The worst case for me was when JW was given someone else’s distance covered data after the BM match…

I use to collect stats data for a sports database that sky and co. use in my spare… when Sp1 brought up the idea of counting the number of times JW went down in a game, I susgested it to the senior analyst and he told me no because no one will but that info… lol

  33. stevepalmer1 says:

Joking aside, i would have kept Gervinho rather than Theo, because Gervinho would take on players granted he missed a few but most of the team are doing that now but at least he tried and i like a tryer. Theo pulls out of every tackle and the only tackle he made put him out for half a season, so thats the last time we see him make a tackle.

  34. tsgh says:

😀 ha ha Sp1.. you crack me up… I said similar after the game against the sperds…

well Gerv was an enigma… playing next to Pjanic, Totti and Strootman he is a different animal… albeit Serie A is slower and allegedly inferior… but then they always do better than the English players in Internationals so…

  35. rico says:

I’m off to slit my wrists. Just the very thought of Gervinho instead of Theo has done that too me….

    Laters…

  36. stevepalmer1 says:

Sorry Rico Just seen your comment, Sagna in my mind has been assessed as a defender he gets wage wise defenders money. which is usually less than strikers but is usually more than goalkeepers Sagna is probably the lowest paid Senior player but has a vary important roll. He is a full back come winger he can play inside should the need arise he can play LB as well in fact he can play almost anywhere. I believe players should get what they deserve and Arsenal have not done that with a player who has proved himself over and over again. I said i would be sad if he left but if Arsenal don’t know by now what they have then Sagna needs to improve his money for his family and his future. He’s in his last few years where Theo and Jack have plenty of time.

  37. tsgh says:

Sp1-Scez even earns more than BS now apparently…

re Song the fans do not love him but he is earning more paying less tax, living in the sun and winning trophies and playing less games… can’t be too bad…

I just think the club needed to re-assess how contracts are awarded…

Fans may be happy with TR07’s contract extension but the fact is he could only have gone to bvb or the MLS imho…

He won’t suit most teams and at his age he is a winner with his deal…

  38. stevepalmer1 says:

Ginge i know, and Czez ow gord i would have Flappy there if i was in charge Latters all keep up the good work Ginge. 🙂

  39. snaparse says:

true Rico I like grafters too..,lampard was/is never a bergkam iniesta xavi ozil cesc kinda midfielder but what he has was efficiency and that’s why he has been so successful IMO…I doubt Wenger would have promoted him if he was in the academy just as he has overlooked some of them recently

  40. tsgh says:

    Later Sp1…

I agree again Snap… look at Eisfield he is hardly ever allowed to train with the seniors…

But 2 senior appearances against 2 EPL team in the CoC with 1 assist and 1 goal is not bad imho…

  41. snaparse says:

true ts i like grafters too..,lampard was/is never a bergkam iniesta xavi ozil cesc kinda midfielder but what he has was efficiency and that’s why he has been so successful IMO…I doubt Wenger would have promoted him if he was in the academy just as he has overlooked some of them recently

  42. sean potter says:

hi rico and all,i have been following hh for over one and half years.i like discusions sparked by your posts daily.hh is my number one place for arsenal news……sp1,i tend to agree with you most of the times.am kenyan btw.

  43. BrainwashedKev says:

Are Arsenal performing better without Gervinho and Song in the team/squad?

Is Arsenal a stronger unit for the addition of Ozil and Flamini?

Is Adam eating penne for lunch???

These are the questions that I’m considering…

  44. BrainwashedKev says:

    Afternoon All….

Afternoon Rico, from both of us 😉
    That was a good post….

Afternoon Ginge, still banging on about Gervinho and Song….
    You gotta let it go….

  45. tsgh says:

    ha ha kev…

Just to let you know I prefer the other kev who you were chatting to this morning.. 🙂

  46. potter says:

One thing is clear and that is whoever is the man in charge of contracts and player budgets at The Arsenal is seriously letting the club down . Too many get out of contract and those that have long deals seem to be abandoned until it’s too late. I am not necessarily advocating better deals for all but it always appears that we have a never do today what you can put off until tomorrow scenario.

  47. rico says:

potter, totally agree but I think Sagna is the last who we will see run down his contract..

Any others I suspect will be told sign up or be sold during the previous season….

  48. rogerbij says:

I get the reasons Song gets stick… but if I think back I was pretty p*ssed the day I heard we were selling him. Love Sagna too, dont mess him round, I believe we can get 2-3 more good years from him! Poor Jack, get well buddy. Surely Wenger was throwing a Hail Mary when he got Kim in, but with Jack injured now he might just make a fraction of a difference. Maybe. Lets win the FA cup, we have a real shot!

  49. potter says:

Alex song was a good squad player as is proven by his time in Catalonia , Barca play him sparingly as Spain do with Cazorla , both are good players but neither are the best players the respective teams have. Cazorla and Song are good enough for The Arsenal but needed better players around them to step up a notch and that’s our failing , since Henry , Vieira and Bergkamp we have always got the not quite theres albeit a team full of very nearlies. It worries me that the same fate will befall Ozil and like so many before he will not fulfill his potential with us due to the players surrounding him..

  50. rico says:

You have a good point Potter about Song, problem is, AW thought he was good enough to be the main man in midfield…

I share your concerns over Ozil…

  51. potter says:

Even the greats :- Bergkamp , Henry , etc had Pires , Ljungberg , Overmars, Vieira had Petit and Seaman , Dixon , Adams , Bould and Winterburn were a unit with Keown as back up. and Despite as much as I love them Rosicky, Cazorla , The Ox , Wilshere and Ramsey don’t cut it in the company we need. They are all good and some have potential but whilst the team is set at this level :- it’s close but no cigars.

  52. rico says:

Not a bad selection for the subs bench though Potter 😉

Not sure I agree on all you name but that’s just my own view…

  53. rico says:

Also, there are one or two I’d add to your list…

Imo, if we add a top winger, top striker and a top ‘DM’ to the squad, sell two or three and replace them with better, we’d be there…

  54. potter says:

I am talking about the young ones because they are not getting a proper chance to develop . They all have suffered injury because of overplaying and because instead of being the nurtured ones they should be , they are thrust into a position of total responsibility. When Cesc came into the team life was easy , get the ball and give it to Bergkamp or Vieira or Gilberto as time went on he developed and became the main attraction. Our young ones now come into the team an are expected to carry things from day one.

  55. Wavy says:

And what about Ted Drake, Cliff Bastin, Alex James, jimmy Logie, Denis Compton etc etc. remember them well!!!
Just one or two really outstanding players would make all the difference. One of the reasons I was so pissed off when the greedy badger started playing the little boys card! He was the difference for us during his one full season and even better for manure during his second. I mean look at him now, no quality around him and no goals or glory. Shame! The grass at old toilet never was any good and its certainly not greener now! Is it Robbie?

  56. rico says:

Ah, I see, and who said project youth was long gone..

You are right though, too much expectation is being placed on the younger players and I am guilty of that.

Probably because I know they lack fear and have far more energy and pace to their game which is something we seriously lack…

Too many players, especially Wilshere, Ramsey and even Giroud have played far too many games on the trot.

Mind you, if we had the right depth/strength in our squad, they wouldn’t have had too….

  57. rico says:

Welcome Sean, sorry for the delay in letting you out of moderation, all your comments will go straight on now…

Hope you pop back again and join in…

  58. Micko says:

rico, I’ve finally sussed Arsene out, he wants to sit at the top of the table but doesn’t want to buy the lunch.

  59. stevepalmer1 says:

    Evening all,
Any news on our walking wounded, have we got a team for tomorow, Jack can play on a broken foot in a friendly for England but can’t turn out for an important game for an Arsenal trophy, i suppose he’s alright to knock another kid out while his recouperating. Players should be busting a gut to play in this game, i used to realy enjoy a cup game and manys a time i played injured , didn’t win much i must admit but the cup i did win stays with me till this day. Aaron and the Sweed need to step up and be counted Diaby should be prised out of his bed and thrown a pair of boot if he still knows what there for. I expect a win from our boys were at home and their breakfast should have bee well digested Giroud should have got his legover i just hope he’s in bed asleep by 3 oclock. Ozil will moan about jet lag but he is a 42 million player and should have a blinder COYRRG’s

  60. stevepalmer1 says:

I’ll drink to that Rico 🙂
Our mamby pandy team needs to step up and be counted, Theo should be made to work as a ballboy and exercise his injury as all he seems to be concentrating on is his pundetry for England the boys a nancy boy and if he thinks being a pundit is his future he could be right as lasting a full season would see him crying to his Mother.

  61. stevepalmer1 says:

Cup game, early start, all the ingredients for a bit of food poisoning, just hope its Everton that has the symptoms

  62. BrainwashedKev says:

I see that Greg Dyke is blaming Arsene Wenger for the fact that there are not enough young English players for Roy Hodgson to pick from…

And that’s the fcuking tool who is in charge of the FA……

  63. stevepalmer1 says:

The FA are quite happy to allow all the top teams to have foreign Managers, who in turn want foreign Players, the English premier league is only called that because we all speak English. I like Arsene Wenger but i can understand him buying from all over the world because he is not responsible for England football team. He works for a business that just want to make money, it also seems that the money is more important than results. Thats business and Arsenal like all the other clubs are working within the rules, If the FA want England to be a major player in future world cups it need to employ more English players and that means restrictions on foreign players. but of course its easier to blame Managers like Wenger,

  64. rico says:

Forget how average you have been of late, get up and get at them and go get to Wembley!!

    COYRRG’s….

    Morning all..

Sp, never in a million years would I want to see Arsenal lose!

There is a big difference between fearing they might lose and wanting them to….

  65. rico says:

Kev, this is what Dyke said:

”It comes down to two basic arguments, the Arsene Wenger argument which says your boys are just not good enough and the other says they are, but there’s a blockage.

”There clearly is a blockage at certain clubs of getting young boys enough experience to get into the best leagues in the world.”

    What an absolute plank!

  66. stevepalmer1 says:

I know that Rico, Just trying to get you worked up, this is a big one, positives all the way, after the game we can talk about all the Arsenal goals. 🙂

  67. Adam says:

Morning Rico and all. I really can’t be bothered to lay it out for Dyke. Suffice it to say that I believe him to be a moron whose only real problem is that he breathes.

  68. Adam says:

I am Rico. Full of hope, expectation and desire, though I have caught a nasty head cold and had a very rough night of sniffles and snuffles.

  69. rico says:

Glad to see you are in the right frame of mind Adam. 😉

Man flu strikes again then, not so good… Hope you feel better as the day goes along….

  70. Adam says:

Thank you Rico. I think I caught it when I was in the local deli the other day. I was pinned in an aisle by a huge woman who sneezed in my face.
