No Giroud, Bring back the old times & That's what you call an impact substitution

No Giroud for Borussia Monchengladbach, they have had second thoughts about trying to sign him as they know they can’t compete with us when it comes to wages etc, so it seems it’s just us in the race to secure his services. Surely we can’t muck it up can we? Ok, he didn’t shine last night but he wasn’t on the pitch that long so let’s not be too harsh.

Yann M’Vila, well he showed just why he is rated so highly, we really need to pray that the rumours of a done deal are true!

What a night for England and especially Theo Walcott. With England 2-1 down to Sweden and looking like they were going to have to book an early flight home, Roy Hodgson played a master-stroke.

With 60 minutes on the clock, James Milner was replaced by Walcott, just three minutes later the ball landed at Theos feet and from 25 yards he fired home to bring the scores level. He played his part for the winner too, after a good break down the right, he crossed into the box for Danny Wellbeck to somehow back-heel the ball into the net.

Now that’s what I call an impact substitution!

3-2 and England just need a draw in their last game against Ukraine who were beaten 2-0 by France.

Steve Palmer is not impressed with the Euro’s though, here is his post for the day…

So, the Euros are in full swing, and transfer rumours are rife.

I have been watching the competition and I have to admit that I haven’t been overly impressed with what I have seen.

Much of the talent on display, one or two of which have been linked to Arsenal, are yet to shine.

So far I have not missed a game, much to the annoyance of my wife, but I intend to keep that up right through to the final.

One of the things I have noticed is how the officials must have been instructed to keep the play flowing at all times, many a time there has been a blatant foul committed on a player who makes a break away but nine times out of ten the referee waves play on.

I’d say that this has happened in nearly every game I have watched and I actually started to wonder if the laws had been changed…!

Another thing I have noticed, and it is happening in our own league and that’s when corners are being taken, many defenders slide their arms around the back of the attacker and grab a handful of his shirt. As soon a the corner is taken, defenders pull on the oppositions shirt as if their lives depend on it.

Not once as far as I know has a free kick/penalty been given for that foul, has that rule changed as well?

Has anybody noticed how many penalties there has been?

We have some of the best divers in the world out there and they have been performing very well but so far, this competition has only produced one penalty and that was awarded against our own club keeper Chesney and that had to be given after incompetent trip from a keeper that was having a bad night.

Even so, with teams like Italy and Spain and even our own England, who can dive as good as the rest, it appears that the officials have followed their instructions to the letter and not awarded a spot kick.

Surely these games are proving that football results can be manufactured by the officials as blatant fouls are not being penalised. Professional fouls are going unpunished and even when all the players have stopped the play, the ref still waves play on.

I have also noticed how offside’s are called early, sometimes it even seems that the decision is made before the pass, I’m sure I have seen two or three goals that I considered good goals adjudged to be offside.

Even the amount of free kicks awarded from the start of the game to around seventy minutes are down from normal, but I have noticed that from the latter point of the game, everything changes and the referee is less stringent.

Is this to ensure that Mr Stat Man doesn’t pick up on anything?

I believe the reason behind all of this is to keep everybody happy,  keep the football flowing which is more pleasing on the eye, but it could very well change the way you look at football in the future. You see a blatant professional foul and you won’t be surprised that your club/country has not been awarded a free-kick.

I’m wondering why there are any rules at all just let the referee decide who wins but that is happening now isn’t it?

Give me back the old days when it took a tank to stop a player, shoulder to shoulder and the toughest man won, where a player felt guilty if he went down and if a player had blood spurting from his body he would be up on his feet wanting to play on.

Nowadays a player gets brushed off the ball and he rolls over five or six times and he dives when there is no contact.

Footballers today are professional cheats and the refs are no better!

Who do we blame for this, well I blame John Terry. 😉

  1. Scott From Oz says:

    Who’s this John Terry dude??
He cops the blame for everything from adultery to global warming.
    I thinks he’s just misunderstood 🙂
    Evening all.
.6 of a degree today in the snow…..lovely.

  2. rico says:

    Morning All…

Thought provoking post Steve but not sure I am convinced by your theory of ‘cheating’ by the refs 😉

  3. Romford Pele (HC) says:

    Morning guys.

Steve, I could disagree more – I’m enjoying these Euros immensely. I’ve also not missed a game. I love the contrast in styles between the teams and very few games have been boring IMO.

Spain and Germany are starting to flex their muscles. England entertained yesterday but you can see why they absolutely have no hope of winning the tournament.

  4. frednerk says:

The thing that I’ve noticed more of with the Ref’s is 80% of the stoppage’s,when a player go’s down holding his leg/foot the Ref’s being stopping play.

    Has the rule’s been change.

  5. rico says:

I noticed that too fred, guess they are not taking any chances on injuries, quite strange though….

  6. ktr7 says:

Good read steve but am enjoying the Euros so much.the contrasting styles have made it very entertaining.

  7. Potter says:

More than the obvious fouls that are going unpunished , it’s the off the ball ones that annoy me most. As we are a pass and move team it affects us more than most.

  8. rico says:

    Hi Kt, Potter

Competitions like the WC and Euros often start a bit slow, but the last couple of games have improved – like you Kt, I am enjoying watching the games i can get to see…

  9. rico says:

Not sure Kt, all that stuff a while back about M’Vila, no smoke withouth fire… onle a couple of weeks to go and we’ll soon find out, he could be ours as long as Citeh, Chavs or Barca etc don’t take a shine to him…

  10. ktr7 says:

Prinz Poldi at 26 years old will win his 100th cap for Germany tomorrow against Denmark.he has 43 goals to show for it.he is a very good player and am sure he’ll be even better under AW.

  11. ktr7 says:

Prinz Poldi will win his 100th cap for Germany against Denmark tomorrow at the age of 26.he has 43 goals for the Germans.he is going to be immense for us.

  12. rico says:

Some think he has not played that well Kt, I thought his first game was his best, his workrate was really good, the second game was a quiet one but I’m not fussed, its what he does in red and white that counts 😉

  13. Scott From Oz says:

    Rico,we’re having a great time.
Sean’s seen snow, played in it,tobogganed down it,thrown it and fallen over on it!!
Podolski is doing a job,and plenty raise the issue of our players not tracking back….we should be grateful he is willing to do it.

  14. Joaquim Moreira says:

I’m enjoying The Euro 2012. We have goals in all the games. We come to the last round and only two teams not have any chanches to go ahead. What we want more? The matches have quality, goals, the stadiums are full, the environment is fantastic. I’m quite sure will be the same until the end.

  15. ktr7 says:

Rico I explained yesterday tactically why Poldi has been rather quiet.despite that he is keeping out the superkids like Götze/Reus.Löw is no mug;he values Poldi’s contribution to the side.

  16. ktr7 says:

Speaking of Mata I still think we’ll probably splash on an AM.Last summer we tried to sign Mata;we were so close but we all know what happened.we even tried to get Götze but in vain.we were so desperate that we took Benny on loan.Wenger likes having an AM that can play on the wing to add creativity especially in difficult away games.we even tried Ramsey there and he struggled.i wouldn’t be surprised if we were hot on the trail of one.

  17. Romford Pele (HC) says:

The thing I like about this tournament is that there are very few dud teams. With due respect to countries like Togo and Costa Rica, they really shouldn’t be at a national tournament. Euros > WC for me in terms of football played – that’s why I’m opposed to the next Euros having 24 teams. I don’t really want to see sides like Armenia/Norway in the tournament – they’re just not good enough at the end of the day.

  18. Romford Pele (HC) says:

I don’t think we’re after an AM either KTR. If we get M’Vila and Giroud, I’m pretty sure that’s our transfer activity over.

  19. Satan says:

    @Scott

About Poldi, its very true. He’s tracking back is just amazing. When we signed him, I had worries about that. Like Arshavin, he’s a flair player(just not that much flair, Arsh is class above most). But he’s work rate for a flair player is just amazing. Not many flair players are that hard working.

P.S. Btw tell me folks, how long before we start rumors about Theo, that he’s leaving and not going to sign a new contract after last night’s performance??

  20. Lewis says:

Morning all! Good post Steve, I too haven’t thought much of the euros so far. Finding it all a bit boring really, I despise most of the players on display, all the diving and just generally being pussies! Guess that’s why the prem is so popular, although it still goes on its much better than any of the continental leagues in that respect. Unless its arsenal these days I don’t really give a s**t, too many money grabbing scumbags i.e.nasri, terry, cole, adebayor….. I could go on.

  21. Lewis says:

Taking Milner off last night must have been the easiest sustitution ever, just bemused as to why it didn’t happen sooner or in fact how he gets a game at all.

  22. Scott From Oz says:

Seem to recall Costa Rica giving Spain a workout not too long ago lol.
    Good post Lewis…..both,actually.

  23. Bruce lee says:

I was just thinking the mess the Spuds are in right now, it may be a good time to nick Vertongon from under there noises, if we can sign him along with M’vila and Giroud then I’m sure we can win the premier league next season…that includes keeping RVP

  24. Scott From Oz says:

I’d love to see Keisuke Honda at the club.
After seeing him for Japan v the Aussies,he looked better to me than Kagawa.

  25. Charlie George aka AK says:

I have not seen Podolski, M’Vila, Giroud, Afellay or the Russian guy play, so i cannot pass a comment on them.
But what i do know, is that Wenger won’t base his transfer business on one tournament.
So if M’Vila & Giroud are pants. I will actually be quite pleased. Because Arsenal then have a better chance of getting them. And getting them at a realistic price…

  26. Charlie George aka AK says:

If Podolski goes through the entire competition, and doesn’t score, then so what?
I want Poldi [yes KT, that is rubbing off :-). ] to save all his goals for Arsenal…

  27. Charlie George aka AK says:

As far as Afellay is concerned, i think that Wenger was interested in him when he was a Bosman, but since then he has added Ryo & Ox to the squad, so maybe that ‘interest’ is more in the mind of Afellay’s agent?

  28. Charlie George aka AK says:

    The Russian guy?!
Not seen him, but do we really want another inconsistant Ruskie???

  29. Adam says:

Hi Rico and Kev and all. Theo hype a bit ott for me but I think we should try and keep him. I can see Chelsea waving a few quid around for him though.

  30. Charlie George aka AK says:

    No rain Rico.
    Lots of road closures…. grrr
Hi Adam. What’s on the menu today? 🙂
I’m certain that Walcott will stay.
Borehamwood, Stevenage, Dartford, Chesham, i’m looking forward to seeing 3 or 4 of those games.
Hurry up with those bloody fixtures….. 😀

  31. Adam says:

Hi Kev. The order of the day is a great bottle of wine given to me by a client a few years ago and ready for drinking now. Are you in town?

  32. rico says:

    Afternoon all…

Any news apart from no rain in the city for Charlie and Adam has a nice bottle of wine lined up for later 🙂

  33. adam says:

Then we are having the same old problem Rico as i haven’t received anything from you again. Could I ask you to buzz it through again perhaps?

  34. adam says:

No Rico. There is something odd going on with me receiving mails from you. I have 23 unread mails but you are not there. I can’t seem to see a Spam folder in Entourage. How about smoke signals?

  35. rico says:

Does anyone here have an idiots guide to using excel? I haven’t a clue but Merlin has sent me a couple of posts which have tables in and i can get them to post properly 🙁 🙁

  36. rico says:

I used to use Excel at work every day Adam, but can I remember how it works, no, just like most things to do with a computer 🙁

  37. rico says:

Nothing JM – not sure we will hear much until the euros, but i did read that once france have secured the 1/4 final place, Giroud is going to fly to london and sort the deal with us out….

  38. Adam says:

Beats me why people like Clichy feel the need to be so incredibly disrespectful to Wenger and Arsenal. If it wasn’t for Wenger where would Clichy be now? Arrogance like his has a nasty way of biting people like him in the arse. Oh, I hope so. His sense of entitlement is galling.

  39. rico says:

Couldn’t agree more Adam, AW made him what he is today and brought him to England when I doubt any other manager would have….

  40. Scott From Oz says:

@Lewis 11.38,I think every big club was looking a Honda after the last WC…he was dynamite.
Our boys fought tenaciously to draw v Japan the other day,but this guy stood out.
He would suit Arsenal down to the ground, and vice versa.
Admittedly,it was one of the few times I’ve seen Kagawa, but there was no comparison.

  41. Scott From Oz says:

Clichy and Nasri….left us for the same reason, went to the same club and now acting the same way…..should we be surprised?
Grubs, the pair of them, and we’re better off without them.

  42. Dominic says:

f the refs have been told to wave play on then I say great. How many time have we seen players fall down, roll over in agony until they realise they are not getting a free? Suddenly they’re back on their feet chasing the ball.
Hope it is introduced into the Premiership next season.

  43. rico says:

Dominic, thats good when its justified, but when cheats take a tumble and the ref waves play on, he should book the diver after the play has broken down… that may not be happeing in the euro’s but yes, i’m all for letting the game flow….

  44. stevepalmer1 says:

    Evening all.
Any news, have we brought or sold anyone or are we just ticking over.
Rumblings down the lane, would like to know what has happened down there, love it when there in confusion, i heard that Arry’s phoned Portsmouth and they told him his ships sailed.

  45. Scott From Oz says:

Any Honda will have an efficient engine,Rico.
Next time Citeh come knocking,we should ask for payment in a fuel voucher 🙂

  46. rico says:

    Evening Steve –

😆 re the pompey ship, they all sail from there…

Scott, i hope you picked up on my irony 😉

  47. stevepalmer1 says:

Hi Rico Thanks for your help as always, didn’t know this was going up as i’ve been out all day, so sorry to leave it to you all day.

  48. rico says:

Oop, sorry steve, i thought i emailed you about it going up today 🙁

    And don’t worry, it’s no probs 😉

  49. stevepalmer1 says:

Tim Sherwood is looking to be the interim Manager Scott and AVB and Klinsman have been linked

  50. stevepalmer1 says:

Although Levy does most of their transfers, they may have to wait till a full time manager takes over before they complete the Vertonghen deal just to make sure he fits into the new Managers plans, i suppose it all comes down to how much Vertonghen wants to go to Spuds we may just sneak in

  51. rico says:

No prob Steev, takes me all day sometimes to check my mail…

I’m not surprised Ches hasn’t walked straight back into the squad…

AVB and Tim Sherwood are favs for the Spuds job…

  52. stevepalmer1 says:

Will you must be earning a fortune the hours you do 🙂 Not a lot oing Will bit of upheaval at the lane but no proper news, Szez has been dropped and Rosiski is struggling with his Achilese

  53. Will says:

Not at all, just a crappy shift. I have a feeling there will be a lot of news the day after the comp finishes.

  54. rico says:

So that means Ches and Rosicky should be fit and well rested for next season 🙂

Can either of these two still go through?

  55. Charlie George aka AK says:

Rico, they kick off at the same time to stop any rigging of the results.
Adam, yes mate i’m in town. Up till Weds. Then home.
That wine very tempting. Not sure that it would have lasted as long in my house…

  56. agirlagunner says:

Booo!! Off to read the comments. Back in a bit! 🙂

The match skeds are terrible for my side of the planet! Kick-off for the matches I wish to see are always 2:30 am. 🙁

  57. rico says:

Thanks Chalrlie, annoying though as we don’t get to see both 🙁

    Thanks Steve..

Will, I’m watching AA and the guy who we are meant to be linked with,,,,

  58. Charlie George aka AK says:

Let’s hope that Rosicky hasn’t picked up another two week injury that turns into six months…!!!

  59. agirlagunner says:

Steve, this is the first of the Euros I haven’t seen much of! 🙁 🙁 This has always been my favorite of the big sporting events. I have been underwhelmed by the matches I have seen so far.

Boo, rico!! Hi, Charlie and Will. 🙂

  60. stevepalmer1 says:

Hi Agag, i think the standard will improve once this round is over, i am hoping that Poland can make it through as i quite like the look of this Lewendowski, would like to see a bit more of him

  61. agirlagunner says:

Yes, he was!! I was just about to bring that up and tease you abot forever being Theo’s Great Defender. :))

And God, that Clichy should shut up. I can’t imagine why I was ever a fan. Ick. The Mancs for all their mad money spending barely won the league!!

  62. agirlagunner says:

Netherlands has surprised me. In a bad way. 😛 What do you make of England’s chances, Steve?? I can’t manage to make myself support England because I find the players generally ick; I only watch because of Theo and Oxo!

  63. stevepalmer1 says:

I am liking what Hodgesons doing he ha been changing the team for who we are up against and at least he’s trying i can only see England improving after every game. Hodgeson seems to be educating the team and making them change and the longer we stay in the better we should get a bit like 1966

  64. rico says:

    1-0 Greece Will

agag, but you are not so naughty 😉

Steve – I absolutely admite Woy, to do what he has done in just a few weeks, credit to him….

  65. stevepalmer1 says:

I would use Theo more as a sub, but Roy seems to have it under control, i just hope he uses Rooney as he would everybody else it strikes me that he is going to invest a lot of faith in him

  66. stevepalmer1 says:

Carrol is a bloody handful for any team he should feature in most line ups as he works bloody hard up an down liking him more and more

  67. rico says:

I actually agree there Steve, with this current England crop – they need a few experienced ‘steady’ heads in there as its early days under Roy – but, now he has two years to take us to the next WC, players like Theo, Ox, Wellbeck, Sturridge etc will become better and more settled in the camp…

I say we should all judge Roy Hodgson on the 2014 WC and it could be special….

  68. rico says:

Carroll is a baddie though Steve, as long as he stays out of the Courts, his game will improve but sadly, I am not convinced he will….

  69. rico says:

I’m off for the day guys and gals – going to watch the rest of footie and then sart the feathered ones out…

Nighty all, and thanks again for todays post Steve, just sorry its been a bit quiet…

    Stay safe all

    Til tomorrow…

  70. Will says:

I never get on here now except for Monday’s and late in the evening and I know I am lazy but when you see 150+ replies, you really don’t want to read them all.

  71. stevepalmer1 says:

No i can understand that Will Specially when you read the same comments, everybody is a bit frustrated but once this is all over proper news should start again and supporters will actuall have something to talk about

  72. Moris says:

i want to see M’vila, Giroud + a good attacking guy; Dzago/Gotze at Emirates, all trophies will b hm

  73. stevepalmer1 says:

Got a feeling we will have a couple more signings will, the post i wrote the other day about the owners is not far off i feel Stan will allow some spending but will expect to clear a few as well. I feel that Walcott will stay but i’m unsure about robin, I n all honesty Will we don’t have a bad squad hopefully the bad injuries will be behind us Bouldy should make a difference and i am expecting a very good season, i have felt we have been close for a few years but just lacking a few finishing touches but now i have my fingers crossed

  74. Will says:

We have a squad that when all fit, are the third best in the league. That said, we will have to add to it to even stand still as I think there will be three or four clubs that are ready to spend BIG this summer.

I agree that we need to offload the dead-wood, free up some wages and get the much needed top talent in and then we can add the youths from the reserves when needed which gives them time to grow and mature slowly.

  75. stevepalmer1 says:

I know Wenger gets stick, but i feel that he has been kept on a leash, and the injuries that we have had has killed any chance we had, i honestly feel that had we not had so many injuries in certain positions we would have realy pressed them at the top, after all no team ha been that far infront and if i speak honestly am a bit surprised how tight it was at the top

  76. Will says:

Look at the start of last season, we basically played for two months without a defence and a new midfield. To finish third was a testament to Wenger and his abilities. All these fans that want the cheque book managers have no idea what we have in Wenger and when he does finally retire, we could well be screwed.

I do hope the board and owner give the great one some money to spend.

  77. stevepalmer1 says:

I am getting excited thinking about the coming season, we are used to seeing Arsenal and i dont think many realise just what a squad we have, Sagna Kos and Vermin Gibbs i dont think that is a bad back line, Arteta Wilshere Rosiski Song Diaby Ramsey, thats not a bad midfield. Robin Pod Theo Ox Gerve Ryo Campbell Park afobe we have some talent and a few good backups as well. Keeper wise i feel we have a problem we need another and perhaps a M’vila apart from them i feel we could win anything with decent coaching both back and forward and we could be a massive force.

  78. Will says:

All we need in a top class DM and maybe Giroud and I honestly believe we will have a team that will challenge. As you say, look at the talent we have with some of that youth coming through,.

    A team of:

    Ches

    Sanga – Verm – Kos – Gibbs

    Walcott – Arteta – M’Villa – Gerve

    Van Persie

    Giroud.

    With a bench of:

    Fab
    Santos
    Merte
    Bartley
    Wilshere
    Jenks
    Ox
    Pod
    Afobe
    Song
    Ramsey
    Rockicky

    How does that sound?

  79. stevepalmer1 says:

sounds good to me Will, hopefully Bould will gell them together as they need a bit of sorting but we definitely have the foundations

  80. Will says:

Yes we do and as we all say, just 2 more top class players will make a difference and I really do believe we will get nearer the top.

  81. Scott From Oz says:

Will @ 10.00, the most accurate and honest post I’ve read on an Arsenal forum, but still, plenty just don’t see it.
    Well done champion.

  82. s j little says:

Best refereeing I’ve seen. Should shake the Premier league referees up. No refs hugging, kissing or putting up with thugs like Rooney.

  83. Merlin96 says:

Loook like a repeat of Nasri-Cesc Saga this summer with Juve wanting Robin-Theo.

Like Nasri, rumor said Theo is willing to sit tight, see out his contract and sign a pre-Bosman contract in January with marquee clubs.

Is that what an “eocnomics professor” all about?
Paying obscenely high salary to dross that no other team can afford and letting your prized asset be sold for a song or free to go?

    Song?
    Pretty quiet.
I think his contract expires in summer 2014, and not summer 2013.

Funnily, after 20-minute cameo appearance in Euro2012, Theo had suddenly become a most wanted player. 😆

Sell Theo for 20+ mil, Wenger, you do not trust him to play centre forward and that is his natural role which suit his pace like Michael Owen. Theo will flourish under any permeirship manager who is not afraid to play him as centre forward.

Wanna bet that Wenger wil go into panic mode this season to cater to Theo’s demand like a french poodle and allow Theo to play anywhere he likes as long as he signs the contract extension?

SO much for player’s loyalty to the badge.
Time to get rid of all these dross, including Theo, and start anew with players committed to Arsenal FC.

  84. Scott From Oz says:

Merlin, didn’t he start that last year by selling Fabregas and Nasri…..players who,as you say, weren’t committed to Arsenal FC??
Come on mate,be fair about it.
I’ve said it before…..RVP and Theo AND Song for that matter ought to be given a date to sign by,and when we get to that day, they should be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
No stuffing around letting them choose where they want to go,sell them to bloody Russia or China if that’s where the biggest money is.
There is no way you can say with any certainty that Theo will flourish under any other manager…that is a crock and a guess,at best.
He may well do,but he may also stay inconsistent.
If RVP goes, keep Theo and give him his chance up front.
Or,play RVP in the hole if both stay.
Either way,we all agree Theo is no winger,so either try him as a striker,or sell him NOW to the highest bidder.
I’m tired of the situation already, and I do agree with you that I only want guys wearing the shirt whose heart is in it.
Here’s your offer, sign by the 30th of June,or You’ll be sold on the 1st of July.
    Done,no comeback,no shuffling of feet,…GGGOOOOOONNNNNE.
Let’s see them and their agents on the back foot for a change.
These guys need to realise that they’re but a small part of what makes Arsenal tick, and each and every one of them can be replaced.
Even RVP has a bloody hide, imo.
He’s been a crock for years.
The clubs put up with him,and paid him a bloody good wage to sit in the stand.
Now,after one undoubtedly sensational season,he sees fit to demand the club buy players because he wants to win trophies.
Bullshit…….repay the faith and loyalty the club has shown you Robin.
Oh,and don’t forget us feeble minded fans who supported you through thick and thin as well.
There’s my post for you Rico lol!!!!!

  85. Will says:

My only point on Theo is, sticking him on the shoulder of the last defender, put the right ball through and watch him race away.

  86. Lee says:

Morning all, I’ve just read your 10.14 Will, and when put on paper that starting eleven and bench looks the bollocks to me!!!!!
And if RVP doesn’t want to be a part of it, thanks for your one season but remember the grass is definitely not greener!!

  87. rico says:

You are up early Lee 😉

Just read that Theo is waiting to see what RvP does before signing his contract, looks like both will be out of Will’s line up…

  88. Will says:

I think Wenger smiling at every interview is a good sign and the Russian kid is stating he wants to come to us.

  89. Scott From Oz says:

I still believe RVP will stay too guys.
I must admit that we are assuming he’s holding the club to ransom over new signings,so maybe my comments are harsh.
Evening all……I’m back at home, tired and looking forward to my own bed!!

  90. rico says:

    The smiling assassin Will ….

I’m not sure re the Russian, I read a couple of stories but haven’t seen anything form him saying he wants to join us…
