New big money contract on offer for midfielder – not Alexis! Are Arsenal heading towards a crisis?

Morning all.

The pre-season overseas tour is over and we are left with just The Emirates Cup and Community Shield before the season kicks off on Friday 11th August with a home fixture against Leicester.

Do we as a club look anywhere near being prepared enough? A big fat no from me and I don’t draw that conclusion simply because Chelsea battered us 3-0 but because the ever present frailties were on show and the same old style of football. Admittedly, the team selection against the reigning league champions barely resembled the one which beat Chelsea in the FA Cup Final.

After snapping up two pretty early signings, certainly for Arsene Wenger, our transfer activity has been zero, yet of all the clubs fighting for the title this coming season, I’d say we are the ones who are in desperate need for changes. Players need to be moved on for the sake of their own career as much as Arsenal and new faces need to come in.

I know we shouldn’t and most of us are sensible enough not to, believe what’s written in the back pages, certainly when it comes to new signings but as the old saying goes, there’s no smoke without fire. Not even if it’s just the odd puff which could so easily be mistaken for a a bit of dust blowing up in the breeze.

Reading the quotes from Lucas Perez left me seething, not with the player, but with the way he’s been treated by a club who lives on the reputation of doing things the right way. Well as far as the Spaniard goes, what he’s endured since becoming an Arsenal player is nothing short of disgraceful. The first half of the season he barely played, he asked to move in January but was then offered more playing time, no, assured he get more playing time but did he? No! Now he can’t wait to get out of the club and frankly, who can blame him? I’d understand if when he did play he was rubbish, or he had a stinking attitude but all he did was give his his best on the pitch and imo, looked good. Very good, yet still he was overlooked as Arsene Wenger slotted his little favourites into the team…

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Well goodness only knows what’s happening with him but again, the media suggest he wants out this summer. Chelsea and Liverpool are reported to be sniffing around him and as much as Wenger tells us he’s going nowhere, I bet by the time the transfer window closes, he’s gone. Same with Alexis Sanchez. Too much has been written in the press to know what’s fact or fiction but general opinion seems to be he’s had enough. He’s stuck around long enough to realise that under Wenger and Kroenke, this club just isn’t on the up anytime soon.

Another player who sparingly last season was Mohammed Elneny. I really like him and I know that’s just my opinion and other Arsenal fans might strongly disagree but he’s a no nonsense, no fuss footballer. He keeps things simple, keeps the ball moving and so often goes unnoticed because of he doesn’t really do a lot wrong. He might give the ball away on the odd occasion but if I had to choose between him or Aaron Ramsey, the Egyptian would get my vote. However, he’s being linked to an exit with Turkey being his destination.

Jack Wilshere – well he could be gone too and just like Elneny, Turkey, or better still for him, West Ham could be the place for the young man once tipped to be the ‘next’ Liam Brady or Paul Gascoigne. Injuries and probably other issues appear to have ensured he’ll never hit such a level. It’ll be a sad day if he does go because he’s been at the club since being so young but for footballing reasons alone, being at Arsenal won’t help him. He’ll always be the first name on the oppositions team-sheet each week – to be kicked!

Gibbs, Debuchy, Jenkinson, Ospina, Chambers, Giroud and Ozil have all been linked with a move away this summer, the latter because of his contract situation which is the same as Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alexis Sanchez, the others, well apart from Giroud, won’t really be missed, not by me anyway. Chambers is an odd one though and if he goes, it’ll be a surprise especially as he starts ahead of Holding for his country and he did have a good season for Boro, despite them being relegated.

As said, those who leave, well they leave but IF all those linked with a move, actually move, our squad will be short, very short as far as numbers go. I’m not advocating they should stay, well, apart from Perez and Elneny but as I wrote yesterday, either Arsene Wenger has seriously lost the plot, he’s ready to turn to a few younger players or lastly, ready to spend big, this squad will be far from able to cope with four competitions this coming season.

Then this time next year Aaron Ramsey, a player who according to the Transfer Market, will be out of contract in 2019 so it’ll be his turn to steal the headlines as other clubs circle for his signature. No, of course Arsenal won’t let that happen, especially after this summers fiasco. They’ll learn from this current situation, just as they told us they would after Bacary Sagna departed for Man City for nothing.

According to The Telegraph earlier this month, the Welshman is set to double his money and sign a new contract and I bet that news will help us all to get over the impending loss of the Ox and Alexis Sanchez…….

Ramsey won’t be the only one either as Walcott and Welbeck’s contract expire in 2019 too…

Crisis, what crisis….?

Morning Andrew, thanks and no it doesn’t. I know there’s still time for many things to happen but fears are we’ve been here before.

  2. gnarleygeorge9 says:

If Sanchez leaves, it will be Groundhog Day……..again!

If he stays, even if he doesn’t sign a new contract yet, The Arse are still in the race to win the Title. But there needs to be an emphasis on getting together a solid defence. With The BFG as mentor & a couple of good young guns in Holding & Bielik could see a good 2nd half of this campaign for The Arsenal.

Sure Arsene Wenger should go, but there needs to be a proper contingency that eases in a new gaffer. At this stage there is no use in just getting rid of the old fella coz he gives us the shits.

But as for Pep, he had Messi @ Barca & a big fish in a small German pond with Bayern. Even after spending upwards of a £1 billion on players in the last few years the Northern Chavs will struggle to win the Title this season. Fact! So how good is Pep really? I mean really? The blow torch is on him, & I will point the finger @ him if he fails, oh yeah?

  3. George says:

    Hi Rico

Have to agree with you that we are very under prepared and our transfer window has been so far underwhelming.

I can see multiple departures and no new faces coming in other than the odd youngster.

Wenger will look to make 52m to cover the Lacazette fee.

Sanchez is definitely going , cant see him staying. As for the Ox, Walcott, Ozil and Giroud, they will stay in another year.

Chambers gibbs Jenks and Wilshire definitely gonna be sold. Wouldnt surprise me if we sell Perez and Ospina too, perhaps Akpom and Campbell as well.

The youngsters will get loaned out and it will be same old predictability.

We should scrape 4th as we wont have champions league to worry about and we will get knocked out of EL playing the likes of Ben Sheaf….

I really hope I’m wrong but cant see it Rico

Mahrez and Lemar? hahahaha…not happening while Stan is about..

  4. George says:

    Hi Adam,

Things going well here, i am over to London for first time since 2014 to see my nipper…2 weeks at good old bognor! butlins….

Was looking at getting tiuckets for the stoke game away but i dunno if i wanna take ny 12 year old there to watch us get done over…we still have modgets in midfield, should Granit get red carded again

    Hows things with you?

  5. Bondex says:

Great post Rico. Your concerns are well noted but I feel most of these are just media speculations and player agents doing their stuff….. I feel a lot more will come to light by the time the other players return for training.

  6. rico says:

    Thanks Adam, Bondex.

    Hi George.

It’s such a sorry state of affairs guys. When we nabbed the two early signings I thought this was it, finally the old man had turned. As said, there’s still time but as far as the football goes, have we seen anything to give us hope for the season ahead.

Nelson is the bright light from pre season imo

  7. ScottfromOz says:

180 million Euros is the figure Real are rumoured to have paid.
So, which big gun will they be selling?

  8. Wavy says:

A glimmer of hope! The superannuated one will also be going in 2019, hurrah!! However, the mess that will be left behind as his legacy may well be irreparable for a generation! The future is none too rosy now, but if we lose the players that have been mentioned, albeit only squad players but all fair EPL quality and the old duffer males few if any more significant purchase then we really are doomed, imo.
Presently I just can’t see any light at the end of this time limited tunnel.

What a sooty state of affairs. Wenger promises to change his ways, where is the evidence. It’s just going to be more of the same old, same old!
Running Report, “no progress made” = Special Measures!

I wonder where we will finish next season? Somehow I don’t think we’ll be even close to the top six leave alone top four. We are heading backwards at great speed and out of control. Will no one step in and stop the rot?? Please.

  9. potter says:

They will try to unload Benzema on us , who frankly is just a slight upgrade on Giroud but not so much that you would notice, This really is becoming a distinctly poor pre season . Not much hope about, with a club that is more split than the Tory party , unfortunately we don’t have a Rees Mogg to just calmly tell tell the truth and walk forward knowing what he is talking about. A few early defeats and social media will be up in arms but in the stadium it will be business as usual as the less virulent will still hold sway and the more passionate will be in the pubs or at home..

  10. ScottfromOz says:

Barca and PSG have just announced they are both holding Press Conferences later today, 30 minutes apart.
When is Arsene holding one 🙂

  11. Bondex says:

There a quote on sky sport that Pep says he’s not in for Sanchez because he has Gabriel Jesus and Aguero

  12. potter says:

Winger ( Wellington Silva ) fails medical after buy-back deal,
Not bad that’s another crock on our hands , we bought him back for £3 .5 million and were selling him on for 4.5. But now Bordeaux have pulled out.

  13. George says:

wellington silva was another nearly man….Bordeaux dodged a bullet appears…i think we were trying to get one up on them for allowing Chamakh to come to us hahaha

  14. George says:

If Ox goes to Stoke Rico, i will change my name to Georgina lol

I dont think Wellington has the Vis , its likely he will spend another season with Fluminese in Brazil

  15. allezkev says:

I think that Wellington Silva will just return to Brazil…

Afternoon Rico, nice post, when are we signing Benzema then? ?

  16. allezkev says:

I was interested to see Ronald McDonald leading out Real Madrid and ManUre in the USA.

The brave new face of football eh?

  17. allezkev says:

Yep Rico, Karim is one of many…

Real Madrid might be releasing a few interesting players now they’ve got Mbappe.
Wonder how many games he’ll get with Cristiano about?

  18. Wavy says:

Apparently not Kev, Rico et al. Monaco and Real have both said that no deal has been made! So old mother Wenger still has a chance of grabbing himself a ‘meal ticket, Mbappe is still on the go! Hurrah for that, eh?

Our presser will be on 1st Sept 17 and it will involve the resignation of the geezer as a result of continued death threats made by members of the anti Wenger para military arm of the official supporters club! The reason being his total lack of signing or releasing any players since June 17. In fact he kidnapped the whole squad and kept them holed up somewhere, address Unknown, in Hertfordshire!

    I wish?

  19. frednerk says:

    Not sure if this true…
But someone has reported on the internet that
two old geezers were wrestling outside Barclays Bank
One was a bald american and the other was a skinny frenchman.
Spokesman for Barclays Bank has explained what happened.
Well the bald american was dragging the frenchman by his hair
    into the Bank,
Shouting Draw out what you Like You Idiot
    with the frenchman screaming back,
You will not Change me You Spineless Tosser.

Could Someone could be making this up?

  20. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Thanks for the post rico. I admire your emotion for the club and your negativity encourages me to tonight seek the company of female companionship. Its a well know fact that pissed off geezers take there eye off the ball allowing me to move in on there bird.

Elneny for Ramsey rico? Perhaps you under the spell of the evil Queen Nephitity who demands that unless Elneny plays, Peter Cushing will get very very angry, seeking to kill Ramseys ancestors and some poor innocent sheep.

And why so angry about Perez? The bloke was obviously bought as cover for Wellbeck and to comfort Santi on the sidelines. Now Danny is fully fit and with Santi now discovering the comfort of women is preferable, the bloke is surplus to requirements. His only hope is if Jack stays and gets a bit confused.

rico, as i said, your passion for the club is admirable, but its still July for gods sake. Give the thing time to pang out before rushing to conclusions.

  21. rico says:

Each to their own Terry. I prefer Elneny to the flicks and tricks king. As for it ‘being July for god’s sake’, haven’t those famous words been muttered many many times during a summer transfer window??

It may be July, but we are just three weeks away , no, less than that, from the season kicking off and as we know from last season when Liverpool rocked up to face a depleted squad, three points were dropped…

  22. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Not at all rico. I have never uttered those famous words in my life. Tell a lie, I may have something said something similar to my first wife when attempting to escape her sexual overtures, but apart from that i have never said them.

i agree about last seasons start, that was painful.

  23. rico says:

Why the caps Terry? We don’t feel the need to shout on here, perhaps you do on the site you normally post on… lol

Last seasons start was avoidable though, just as it is this time around. If and I know it’s a big if, all those rumoured to leave and who want to leave do actually depart, we are in a pickle imo.

  24. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

When i first stated posting rico, the geezer before me used the caps so I thought it was the done thing. I did not wish to admit to my mistake or virginity, so continued using them.

We have some issues but my gut feeling is we will start off strong this time. i like the signing of Lacazete and feel he will give us another option in that three at the back can allow the pairing of two orthodox strikers.

The only downer for me is the Sanchez issue. He stood out so much last season that it reminds me of another Brady or Van Persie situation

  25. rico says:

My guess is you’re pulling my leg Terry, or attempting to…

The good old gut feeling, funny enough I used to suffer from the same illness but it cleared up around five years ago…

  26. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

rico, since the early seventies I have gone into every season thinking we can win the league. And when we don’t, i maintain to others, mostly Totnumb fans, that we have. When they attempt to argue back i insist they are suffering from some mental disorder that is confusing reality and must seek urgent medical attention.

  27. Lee says:

I’m not denouncing the FA cup but, wasn’t the move from Highbury supposed to have us competing with the big boys??? The PL and the CL are what we should setting our sights on….let’s not use how much the other teams are spending to hide Wenger’s inadequacy.

If Wenger had shown some ambition by adding to the squad in previous seasons we may not be discussing Sanchez leaving…

  28. allezkev says:

Wavy, that means that a deadline day swoop by Arsene is still on the cards.

    But not for Mbappe ?

  29. rico says:

Wenger better get his pound out then for deadline day… All trolleys need one these days apart from Waitrose and there’s little chance of him shopping in there…..

  30. ScottfromOz says:

Sanchez left Barca-weren’t the winning things?
Pep had them at the time, and he wins everything, so that doesn’t add up.
Then it’ll be how he wants playing time.
He gets plenty at Arsenal, yet is aiming at a move that’ll see him get less, so that arguments blown.
Then his “demand” for 400k a week.
Well, there’s is no debate against that, so it’s obvious that it’s about the money!!!!
I’m not sure how people don’t get that Alexis is all about Alexis.
He couldn’t give a crap about the fans, the club or his teammates.
Amazing how we ask has he actually stated he wanted to leave, did he really ask for more money??
Well, one thing we know for a fact is he has not extended, so common sense tells us he wants something lol
Trophies-3 of the last 4 FA cups.
    CL?
    Should’ve stayed at Barca.
League titles-same, or head to Celtic.
No, he’s never extended so don’t have fnore rhat single fact.
    I’ll bet he’s never copped a pay decrease,either.
There, I’ve finally made my mind up-sell the greedy bastard 🙂 🙂 🙂
Off to Paris with him, and for whatever we can get.
Then, this epic saga that he’s been can be put to rest, and not before time.
Morning all and yes, I feel much better now

  31. Meerkat says:

I agree Scott. Laughing from the bench when his team were being beaten. I bet his teammates loved seeing that captured by the TV cameras.
He wasn’t wanted by Pep at Barca. I think he will be put in his place if he goes to City and starts slating the team.He will be warming their bench.
We don’t need mercenary pot hunters who cause bad feelings amongst the team.

He has always been going, He doesn’t care about Arsenal, or the fans. I just wish Le Prof had accepted that and sold him for top dollar before now. Then we might have brought in a replacement.

  32. rico says:

Personally Scott, I think your last comment is rather odd. How can you assume Alexis is all about the money when he’s said nothing relating to money?

Footballers move to different clubs, it happens all the time as they go for a new challenge, Alexis did that when he moved to Arsenal but I strongly suspect he was told, or thought we were an ambitious club. Hasn’t quite worked out that way has it?

Alexis all about Alexis? Disagree there, he’s just someone who appears to want to be involved in everything and wants to win..

Celtic?? That’s really a daft suggestion imo.

FA Cups are great, but top top players don’t move to England for an FA Cup. Yes, they’ll enjoy winning them but we all know that the PL and CL is top of their agenda, just as it is for top top managers and they build a squad to really challenge for both.

Perhaps if Wenger and the club shared the same views and had the same ruthless attitude as Alexis, he’d have signed a new contract long before now….

  33. rico says:

Meerkat, how foamy of us know what Alexis was laughing at that day? Mind you, I strongly suspect some of us fans were laughing watching the comical display of football which was dished up…

I’m far from convinced Alexis cares nothing for the fans….

  34. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, I hope you’re right on Lemar.
If we do further strengthen, though, I still don’t believe Alexis will extend-just my opinion.
I think he will either leave now or at seasons end on a number deal.
My comment is just an opinion, and no more odd than any other opinion being offered up by others, because none of us know the facts, and are all guessing at what’s happened.
Celtic was tongue in cheek and I’m sure you know that 🙂

  35. Herb's Army says:

Before your fellow-countryman financially doped the English Premier League, Scott, Celtic were considered a much bigger club than Arsenal, mainly because of their European Cup in ’67, but they also have a huge fan-base, which is historically linked with their religious origins.

  36. Meerkat says:

Rico, I’d be surprised if you were laughing that day. It was horrendous. No, perhaps we don’t know exactly what him and Cech were having a laugh at, but it was inappropriate all the same, and had me spitting nails to see them at the time. They should have been bollocked there and then by the manager for being so unprofessional imo. They were still part of the squad and should have behaved accordingly.
I know I seem a bit OTT about this, but that’s how I feel, and I haven’t liked Sanchez or Cech since then. (He needs replacing too, lol)
If that had happened during any games when we used to run youth sides, there would have been hell to pay. They would have been out!!

  37. allezkev says:

We all like to think that the players have some kind of affection for our team, but in most cases it’s just a job for them.

I’ve loved watching Alexis, it’s been great but I’m under no illusions that he sees Arsenal other than as just one more step along the way during his career.
Most players are manipulated by their agents and agents don’t give a fcuk.

  38. allezkev says:

The days when players got the tube to Highbury along with the fans and chatted football are in the dim past.

Now you have contact with players via Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat, but is it really them or some PR geek pretending to be whoever?

  39. allezkev says:

Look at Thierry Henry, now he did love the club and was making his way on the coaching side, but in the end he took the Sky coin, because it’s about the money, it’s always been about the money all the way back.

  40. rico says:

Trouble is Meerkat, the media made that whole thing bigger than it possible/probably was…. Both players could have been chuckling at something totally innocent but the press made it look bad… imo of course…

  41. rico says:

Ok Scott. Just didn’t understand really what you were alluding to, other than slating Alexis, oh, and Pep.. I’m beginning to think you’d rather Pep was at Arsenal rather than City… 😉

Kev, maybe Henry didn’t want to break his contract with Sky…. lol

  42. allezkev says:

Maybe Rico, it’s just that I thought he loved Arsenal so much…

I see that Deportivo have offered £9 million for Lucas Perez, that a depreciation of £8 million in 12 months, almost 50%, it’s good to see how high they value him.

He’s been making it clear that he’s wanted to leave since January, rather than getting his head down and working, a bit like Debuchy.

Well I’d be very happy to see him stay rather than give him away.

  43. goonster says:

I love how some people ll rather turn on players, slate them and run them off but the same twat who has been ruining the club is celebrated. God in heaven. First it was Ashley then samir and cesc. Then van persie (adebayor got what he deserves fuck him) now it’s Sanchez and perez. Tsk tsk tsk. These are the same guys who blamed arshavin when his form dropped. The same arshavin that tore defenses a new one at the euros. Keep kissing up to lefraud. We ll get our club back eventually. Night guys.

  44. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, if Alexis stays and extends, he will prove me wrong, and I’ll change tack on him totally, and do so happily.
Pep to Arsenal-i’d have loved hom to join us because it would’ve shown whether the guy can actually manage or not to the level plenty think he can.
I still say he can, but believe he has to prove it.

  45. rico says:

His record speaks for itself Scott. Surely he has very little to prove?

He may spend money to win trophies, but that’s sport, certainly football… Not spending money on addressing a clubs needs is what I’d consider to be a massive failing, especially when that club is rather wealthy….

  46. Herb's Army says:

If it were up to me, Rico, Arsene Wenger would be arrested for fraud and deception.
In all my years watching football, I can’t ever remember another manager constantly getting huge rewards for continued failure.
Arsenal are the only football club I know who flatly refuse to take advantage of their huge financial muscle.
Even the tiny Tott’s have a better business model than us.
Levy is doing a fantastic job compared to Gazidis. He and Pochettino are schooling Wenger and Gazidis.
I’d imagine that Arsenal’s Old Etonians find City, Chelsea’s, United’s, Liverpool’s and Everton’s spending quite distasteful and vulgar, without ever seeing the irony of paying a fortune for a manager routinely out-smarted by his much lower-paid peers.
We have the worst owner we could ever imagine, and a weak, complicit manager, who has rinsed Arsenal for a fortune, all the time putting his ego before the needs of the club.
Lacazzette (*sp) may be a good signing, but it’s four years too late. Where were we when City were buying Aguero, or when Liverpool bought Suarez? Signing the likes of Chamakh and extending the contracts of duds like Bendtner.
I’d love a proper Accountant to comb through all Wenger’s financial activity during his time at Arsenal, because he has wasted eye-watering money without ever being held to account.
The wrong owner allied by the wrong manager is tail-spinning the club in a downward trajectory and it’s only going to get worse.
We are light years behind Chelsea and the two Manchester’s in terms of our footballing structure, and that gulf continues to widen.
We have an identity crisis, because the stadium move is looking more and more like a red herring.
The Arsenal people are witnessing since the stadium move is the very opposite of what the supporters were promised.
Both Kroenke and Wenger need chasing out for Arsenal to ever have any hope of competing at the top level again.
Arsenal fans should be extremely concerned about the club’s future.

  47. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning all.
Rico, I do not agree at all that his record speaks for itself.
At both Barca and Bayern, he had ridiculously talented squads and in largely uncompetitive leagues.
He did bloody well in his first season at both clubs but won nothing with City, so either we dismiss the first season argument, or we concede he had it easy at Barca and Bayern.
    There’s no in between, surely.

  48. frednerk says:

    Morning Rico and All

Think scotts could be right rico…Lemar could be here for friday
    Sanchez..Must be off.
    Putting 2+3 = 4 That is.

  49. rico says:

    I was Adam, although I hadn’t gone to sleep…. 🙁

    Morning to you all…

We’ll have to agree to differ Scott, a manager inherits who he does and builds on it, after all, didn’t Wenger do the same? Would we/he have won the league without inheriting such a strong back five? We’ll never know….

  50. rico says:

Morning Fred, I wouldn’t be at all surprised. If Alexis wants out at all costs, it makes sense to let him go, although only to Psg….

  51. rico says:

Spot on Herb although at least Ivan had the decency to resign to show his unhappiness at the situation, albeit it wasn’t accepted. I feel his hands are tied to a great extent. Kroenke and Wenger are a match made in heaven for everyone and everything bar Arsenal FC

  52. Bondex says:

Morning all…. I honestly believe Pep is realising this is the most demanding league he’s been. If Mancity don’t win anything this season it will be difficult to say he’s as good as we believe him to be… He always had the foundations laid for him. He met ready made teams at Barca and Bayern Munich.

  53. ScottfromOz says:

Fred, I’m glad you can count-very impressive and the tutoring is doing wonders 🙂
Rico, did he manage the Incincibles with said back 5???

  54. rico says:

No Scott, he bought that back five, or certainly some of them. Just as he bought many of the other players at the time. So really, he too bought a team to be successful didn’t he?

  55. ScottfromOz says:

But I thought he never spends 🙂 🙂
We could go around In circles, but regardless of the rubbish people say, of course he spends.
    Every manager does.
Some spend a lot more because they can’t produce results without it.
Others buy younger guys and mould them.
A top manager will do a bit of both.

  56. rico says:

Many do don’t they Fred? Just as many successful managers spend lots of money to be successful or at least strive to be. That’s the game as it is today and with so much money awarded to PL clubs through a TV deals, the prides have vastly increased.

  57. rico says:

Rubbish is a bit harsh Scott, it’s all about opinion, not rubbish..

Yes, he spends, or he did when Dein was around but as you and all of us know, he’s often failed miserably during a transfer window.

Wenger can’t win the league by spending or moulding youth which says it all really.
