More Petit than Vieira. Gazidis offering his hand?

Morning all.

The international break is a pain but for once it might have come at a good time for Arsenal. Certainly the players as it’s their chance to get away from what has been a tough time for the club. Not all I know as a number of them remain in London to suffer more of Unai Emery’s coaching skills.

According to The Daily Mail, Granit Xhaka is busy house hunting in Italy, Milan to be more precise as Ivan Gazidis is rumoured to be offering him a chance to get out of north London. If it’s true, I hope he takes it for his sake as much as ours.

Arsenal FC are at the stage where everyone and anyone once associated to the club are having their say on what the board should do now with the majority leaning towards change.

‘I believe it’s time for Unai Emery to leave Arsenal.’ ‘The results are not good at all. I don’t recognise this team anymore and I don’t recognise this club any more. ‘Now they look like an average team without any inspiration or creativity – and I don’t think that’s solely down to the players. My opinion is that most of the players have given up on Emery, so it’s time for him to go.’

‘What the club came out and said about Emery’s job being safe is not true at all. Everyone knows this, the typical official language clubs send out to the press and fans when things are not going well, when they sense tension. ‘This is a political answer and most of the time when I hear officials or shareholders talk like this it’s proof for me that they’re already thinking about sacking the manager.

‘I want to see passion, emotion. Someone who, when he takes your hand, you can feel the electricity. I want someone who can bring that to the Arsenal dressing room, because they need to wake up.’

His view is probably no different to any of ours here on HH and I certainly believe he’s right about the public support for Emery offered by the board. Every club says something similar when the pressure is mounting on a manager. I still think his sacking is imminent, perhaps more so now that the words ‘must’ and ‘improvement’ were included in the clubs comment on the Spaniard.

Petit reckons Henry, Vieira or Ljungberg should be given the job, someone who’ll bring back a bit of passion and pride for the shirt they wear. Something like that anyway and I’m right behind him there too.

Patrick Vieira of course is one of very few who have publicly offered his support to Emery by suggesting he deserves more time to turn things around. Tony Adams did too just after watching an average Leicester performance give us a hiding.

Well, it is election time so perhaps both our previous ‘proper captains’ fancy a return to the club and are simply saying the right things at the right time just to be seen and heard and who would blame them if that’s their game? Not me that’s for sure.

If Arsenal FC want ‘The Arsenal’ back, I couldn’t think of two better people to be given the task. I’m sure big Tony would soon let the players know what the club means to him and us, Paddy too, and with Freddie already in place, there’s half a managerial/coaching team done and dusted. Lol

A bit of heart, soul and passion goes a long way in life and for most football clubs out there, certainly the ones without a multi millionaire with a bottomless bank account, it what keeps them afloat…

For Arsenal FC though, the lack of of it might turn out to be its downfall.

Just do it Raul…..

    Good morning Rico.

Tony Adams as manager? At Arsenal? You’ve got to be kidding. Much as I admire and respect him as a former player and captain at Arsenal I don’t see any evidence, since he hung up his boots, that he could manage his way out of a paper bag.

  2. rico says:

Morning Cicero. I didn’t suggest Adams as manager, just part of a team which helped restore some pride into the club.

Vieira would have to be up there as an head coach option.

  3. Le Coq Monster says:

    Morning all and thanks, Rico.

Nice rumour that Xhaka is house hunting in Milan, but an even better rumour would be that Emery is Castle hunting in Transylvania.

Yep, agree with Petit, the Raul Emery blessing is just what the club would do, they cant say anything else can they until they have had a good browse around who is available.

I`m so disallusioned with this current Arsenal that I`m worried that whoever takes over wont be able to turn it around, pessimism is hard to get rid of when things are so bad whether in our Arsenal or in our personel lives……………..life can be a bitch and last November to this November has been the hardest year I can think of from a personal point of view.

  4. potter says:

Liverpool had the famous ” Boot Room ” which kept the club at the peak of it’s success , The king is dead , long live the king . The mantra stayed the same but faces changed within a select group.
The Arsenal have lost this over time . Wenger had the good sense at the beginning to keep George Armstrong , Bob Wilson and of course Pat Rice in his inner circle it embodied THE Arsenal in his early days .
Obviously we don’t have those people to call on but the 1996 – 2005 players group has any number of players that we know through their T.V appearences as pundits hold the club’s traditions close to their hearts . The club should reach out to them , From Seaman , Keown , Wright , Petit , Vieira , Dixon , Winterburn , Overmars and of course Dennis , the club has a deep well to draw from , Bould and Ljunberg are already there .
To me this is as important as the figurehead afterall Shankly , Fagan , Paisley had the club in their blood only Paisley I believe played for them .
As some of you know I lived in Catalunya many years ago . In one of the Penyas I visit when I go back on the wall it says ,

    Wherever we are from.
For so many years we have felt it.
And for 120 years, it’s deep within us.
    More than a club.

  5. rico says:

Wenger also had players to keep Arsenal living too in Adams, Dixon etc. We cite the invincible breakup as being the beginning of the end but imo, it was a lot to do with the players like those above retiring too…

  6. Adam says:

Morning Rico and all. When things are going wrong, as they surely are it’s always tempting to cite what you don’t have as the obvious solution, but I don’t get this ex-Arsenal player thing myself. None of the oft-quoted figures, great players though they may have been, are really ripping it up as coaches or managers. We perhaps have an over-romanticised view of “What it means to be an Arsenal player”. That’s all done now for me. Surely what we need is to either get an established, quality manager who understands the demands of high-end football and has shown that he can get the best out players. I’d put Rodgers in this category. Or take a punt on someone who might work out despite their limited experience. Perhaps Arteta fits here.
We really have to move forward I reckon.

  7. rico says:

Morning Adam. My rationale is down to the club having lost its heart and soul. With the game, transfers etc seemingly all about who pays most, a bit of passion can make all the difference. Imo anyway..

  8. potter says:

Adam not touting for anyone to be manager , just to keep the “”DNA “” within the club . As is often touted we had our 2006 run to Paris with Keown advising the defence , he wasn’t the manager but apparently he butted heads with Wenger and left as did Seaman who Wilson wanted to take over keeping duties .
As I said Shankly played for Preston and I don’t think that Fagan played for the club either but they were part of a smooth transition. Something that 22 years of one person allowed to slip by.

  9. Adam says:

Hi Rico. I just think the game has moved on and so should we. From what I see, there is no heart in Arsenal football anymore. Just success and money. Look at the way that the club, our Arsenal, has treated long-term supporters. They don’t give a damn where the money comes from as long as it pours in. All the old school Arsenal team at the club have gone. Somehow hoping that it hasn’t is painful, but unfortunately real. To any player, not previously associated with the club, we are a possible step towards a really elite club. We aren’t elite and we won’t be until we get a proper manager and become successful again and then top players will join and perhaps even buy into the club’s history and values.
. Everybody knows that Emery isn’t that man. He talks incessant cobblers and makes awful decisions. He is getting eaten alive every game by other teams and their managers. Players like success and money. The rest is just irrelevant to me. I don’t like that fact, but looking at the club today all I see is a complete nonsense. I had high hopes of Raul and Edu but actions speak louder than words and until something big changes, then nothing will change.

  10. Adam says:

Potter. I see what you mean and I wish the DNA thing was real, but I just think it was all too long ago to really matter. Believe me, as an Islington boy, I don’t want to think that, but I do. Perhaps I’m just protecting myself from the hurt I fear is coming.

  11. rico says:

Adam, I guess that makes me wonder why I or anyone bothers to support the club anymore. If the club no longer cares about us, why do we care about it…

  12. Adam says:

Rico. Because it’s in our DNA perhaps as we’re lifers in a way that players aren’t.
We continue to be a sleeping giant with a huge fanbase that just doesn’t believe any more. I haven’t heard anyone even suggest that Emery is the right man. With every passing day of inactivity from Raul etc. The fans grow more despondent. It can and must change, but right now, things are awful. Managed by a bloke who isn’t a very good manager and who, after 18 months(?) still can’t speak the language. It’s a joke.

  13. rico says:

It is a joke Adam re Emery’s waffle, it’s all bollox isn’t it? I just can’t believe the board don’t see what we do. Or perhaps they do as I’m sticking with. Lol

Yes, we don’t really have a choice I suppose although my interest is reducing rapidly, just waiting for the day the club opts for someone different.

  14. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi All I have been trying to think of a coach ( out of the box ) who has some experience but is not the first name you think of and I have come up with one he is one of the best Australian coaches who has won local league and taken Australia to the world cup. his name is Angelos “ANGE” Postecoglou at the moment I believe he is coaching in Japan I know Australian soccer is not the same level as English but he has coached some of the best Australian player that have played or are still playing in the Premiar league

  15. Adam says:

Arsenal have been a reactionary club for a long time. If the board want to re-energise the club and get the fans back onside, they have to act. If their choices don’t work, they’ll have to go again until it does. Regardless of cost.

  16. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning all.
Geoff, I mentioned Ange about 2 years ago as 1000/1 shot but he’d not cop egotistical Prima donnas, and would have us playing bloody good football but he will be seen as a joke as he’s an Aussie.
We both know he’s a sensational coach.
Forget players “passion” for the club.
    You can’t manufacture it.
It’s too late for most of our guys.
Passion for the game and professional pride is something they need to be reminded of, but passion for the shirt, for the badge is something that takes time.

  17. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, how can you say he’s the last thing we need if you’ve never heard of him????????
I’d place as much money as anyone would like to bet that Ange would have the club ticking over pretty damn quickly.
“Arsene who”…….wasn’t that a headline, once?

  18. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi Rico you should look him up and watch some of his coaching he does not care who you are if you don’t put in 100 percent you are out and that includes his coaching team

  19. ScottfromOz says:

Ange is damn close to winning the J League.
    The stars are aligning hahahaha
Aussie coach smashing it at the Arsenal?
Oh, wait a minute-the club’s Women’s side has already gone to the next level with one of our boys in charge 🙂

  20. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, You advocate Paddy and Freddie over a gent with an already fantastic career where he’s succeeded at every club, in different leagues, At the international level, and he’s the experiment?
He may be a risk-any new manager is-but he is certainly no experiment.

  21. Aussie Geoff says:

don’t forget that Arsenal took one of our top Aussie rules Physio because our players at Arsenal kept braking down

  22. Limey says:

Just seen Arsenal are top of a green survey of Premier League clubs, yay so Arsenal win something, and Alex Scott and Ian Wright could win their reality shows!
Seriously I’ve never known an International break where it’s a good thing there’s no Arsenal to watch.
Maybe in a few weeks Emery will be gone, the election will be over, and I have a feeling Freddie will be in charge. This season is looking like a write – off though.

  23. Mike says:

    Thanks Rico , hello all.
Scott and Jeff………I like the idea of an Aussie being our manager, with a no nonsense , bloody minded , winning Aussie attitude……BUT,can you imagine the uproar from the fans, pundits etc. The club would be accused of taking the cheapest option etc ,etc ,etc……If it didn’t work Raul and his mates would be finished.
However, if they employed a big respected name,if it all went belly up,they wouldn’t be left with so much egg on their faces.
Times have changed since Arsene first came to the club. Now people want instant fixes no matter how hard or expensive that may be.

  24. Le Coq Monster says:

I`m sure that if this Aussie coach is as good as Geoff and Scott say he is then he will be on the radar and not just Arsenal`s one !

Some great comments by Adam again, especially the ………..” he talks incessant cobblers” bit.
    😆

Thing is all the ex-players do talk a good game and I`m one of those who loves listening to Keown on Talksport and would love him to have a crack at our defense, but will the players buy into it ?

These players today who hold all the cards being multi-millionaires can have an attitude of I`m wealthy and being paid and I dont care if I spend my time on the bench as I can buy a super car next week if I want to. We need a manager/coach who the players are in awe of and will run through brick walls for !…………………………..we have a coach who is having the piss taken out of him , the players are not stupid and will ahve heard of rumours that he could not control the dressing room of PSG and if that is true then he should have never been interviewed let alone given the job, just because he knew all the players from a dossier !……………fcuk me, I have Panini Cards going back years of every PL player, that makes me more eligible than Emery and not forgetting my London Colney Subbuteo pitch where if any player is out of hand then I re-paint their face to look like Ian Dowie !

  25. Mike says:

Yeah LCM , players these days hold all the cards. It seems that if you you tell them they’re not pulling their weight they can just get a sulk on {eg Ozil} and are quite happy not playing while still coining it in.
I guess it’s as much about man management as game management.

  26. Le Coq Monster says:

More detail needed, Kev, the fruit or the bird ?……………..although either will be better than Emery !……………………..next we will have our Aussie boys saying make a Kangaroo the manager or that massive big red monument in the middle of Australia, no, I`m not talking about Dame Edna Everage`s knob ……….. Ayers Rock I think it`s called !

  27. Andorrabyte says:

    Hi Guys.
Have we forgotten that Arsene Wenger was the coach of Nagoya Grampus in the Japanese J League before he joined Arsenal in 1996.
We have some good young and established players so why not this Ange, who Geoff suggests?
Our Europa League side plays with more verve and are prepared to run their legs off so why not give them a run?
Do any of you know if Wenger made any contribution to the board who he would recommend to take the reins?
The fact that the board gave him ANOTHER two years ( two years too long – that was bound for failure) perhaps indicates their feelings about Emery?
    Surely not?

  28. Andorrabyte says:

I read that Henry was suggesting the fans give Pepe a break as it will take him time to adjust.
When Arsenal were on the verge of buying him Pepe’s dad suggested that Pepe be “more serious”. I think that’s the gyst of what he said, but, seriously, what utter nonsense for his father to suggest that, when his son was scoring glorious goals and playing with a freedom we have yet to see.

  29. ScottfromOz says:

You’re a cynical bugger, Rico hahahaha
I think Arsene is perfect for the gig, to be honest.
He lives and breathes the game and this is a good way for him to help on a large scale.
Kev, imagine Arsenal players rolling out the Haka before each game hahahahaha
Mike is right-fans would go ballistic if a no-name was made manager.
As good as Ange is, very, very few in Europe know him.
One press conference though, and most would be sold.
He’s so much better than any other Aussie coach I’ve seen, it’s not funny.
Won’t happen, but it was a decent call, Geoff.

  30. Le Coq Monster says:

Great opportunity for Wenger to scout some players for us , to have them developed by Steve Bould……………………

  31. rico says:

Must be honest, right now I don’t care who replaces Emery, but deep down I know it does matter. As much as you guys suggest Ange and compare the situation with us appointing Wenger, I think it was different back then as there was just Fergie to compete with. Now there Klopp, Pep, Poch, Rogers and a few others who have had time to get used to the PL.

  32. Le Coq Monster says:

He`s Greek !……………………them Aussie lads are taking the piss !……………………it`s like us saying Sven Goran Erikson and Fabio Capello are English !……………..cheeky fcukers !
    😆

  33. Aussie Geoff says:

don’t worry were some one is born lets look at his coaching career and that you will see started with a small team in Australia working his way up to coaching the Australian team to know coaching in Japan and lets face it the way the Japan league are spending money if he was no good they would not have gone after him. but remember what I said at the start I was thinking out of the box for a coach that people don’t straight away think about . sorry but can not think what club it was but I do remember him being interview for a coaching job in the premier league but turned it down as he wanted to finish his contract with Australia as for the arsenal players not wanting to put in 100 percent don’t pick them as soon as they realize that there name is no longer under lights and people stop talking about them and fans starting cheering on young players who just want to play the game there attitude will soon change AS my Grandfather used to say you may not like your boss or his idea’s of how things are done but all ways remember he pays your wages.

I must say, I am delighted to become FIFA’s new Chief of Global Football Development. It is an exceptional challenge and I look forward to correcting all the wrong decisions against Arsenal from 22 years. Firstly, we have now won the 2006 Champions League Final. Congratulations!

  35. allezkev says:

    Wenger Knows Best
    @wengerknowsbest
I can tell you, now that I’m FIFA’s new Chief of Global Football Development, Man Utd’s win to end Arsenal’s Invincibles in October 2004 has been overturned. Overall, as we have mostly been exceptional ever since, we are now little bit 592 games unbeaten.

  36. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, to add to what Geoff has said, Ange is a guy that players adore-they play for him.
He doesn’t cop rubbish from anyone, and his teams always play attractive yet disciplined football.
Put it this way-he is far too good for Australian football, and imo, will make it in Europe but as with any manager, we won’t know for sure until he’s given a chance but I reckon he will get that chance at some point.
You know who my first choice is and I’ll stick with that, but damn, I’d happily see Ange given the job!!!!
He’d surprise the hell out of people/

  37. Aussie Geoff says:

Breaking News Arsenal sign new coach who guarantee will have the referees on our side and now More yellow or red cards and even The VAR will be on our side. Arsenal are proud present our new coach ex referee Mike Dean on a 5 year contract

  38. kelsey says:

    Good afternoon Rico and all.

Our club has lost it’s iconic identity with in fighting at Board and executive level and a split dressing room which accounts for a number of things mainly no balance or consistency in the team and Emery doesn’t know his best team and he has his favourites. .IMO the job is far too big for Emery but will Josh act.
For those who take the piss out of Emery he has a speech impedement be it Spanish or English which doesn’t help his cause.

  39. Wavy says:

Afternoon all. Kelsey, what is his speech impediment? Is it that he can only think in “spinash”? ( that’s a sort of green leafy or verdant style of “inglach”😊.

Different manager? Should be immediately, now, this minute. However, we’ll just have to wait until the end of the season because, we don’t want to waste money on the severance fees! Same old Arsenal!

  40. Le Coq Monster says:

Nothing wrong with an impediment, I have a brain impediment and it doesn`t stop me from being fcuking stupid !

  41. Le Coq Monster says:

Not being funny, but I read a lot of Arsenal sites and it seems like every Australian blogger has to have the name “Oz” or “Aussie” in their name ! 😆
    😆 😆
Well apart from Gnarley George, he had some imagination, then again he was from Taz`…………………now if I was on an Australian site, would I be calling myself…………….English/England/Blighty/Pommy Le Coq Monster !

Come on lads, a bit more imagination, at least put something like G`Day/Bruiser/Bruce/Sheila/Barbie/Ripper/fair Dinkum/Dingo ate my baby in it ! 😆 😆 😆

  42. Le Coq Monster says:

Must admit after Kelsey`s revelations about Emery`s speech impediment I do feel sorry for him, but it hasn`t changed my mind about him and still want him gone by this ebening…………..

  43. rico says:

    Afternoon Kelsey and all.

Matters not re Emery’s speech impediment imo, it’s the rubbish he speaks. None of which makes sense imo.

  44. Cicero says:

I see that the PGMOL (Mike Riley) and the Premier League have kicked the VAR can down the road. No changes in the way the system is used until the end of the season. More info about what is happening to be made available to fans at the match and to the TV audience.

  45. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning all.
LC, I added the Oz because there was another Scott, and he was such an arsehole, even I didn’t want to be associated with him 🙂

  46. Le Coq Monster says:

Honestly sounded like the commentator called one of the Montenegro players names as Shutupyoubitch ! hahahaha

  47. Cicero says:

Personally for the most part I don’t think we need the assistant referee part of VAR. The on pitch ref should, if he has any doubt, be able to call for replays on a pitch side monitor. Only in the case of serious off the ball incidents or where there is a very obvious error by the ref should the VAR get involved.

  48. Mike says:

I wish our players tracked back and tackled like the England team did tonight.
Oh CRAP……. You watch, someone will come on calling themselves MikefromOz now you’ve said that Scott!

  49. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi all just read a story were Santi Cazola would like to come back to arsenal either as a player or after he career finished in some sort of coach roll what do you think I would have him back tomorrow just to build the morel around the club as a player of the bench then into coaching, by the way LCM I use Aussie for two reasons 1 Geoff is a popular name and 2 I like to see were country fans are from and what they think

  50. kelsey says:

Too many rumours coming from the press not to believe that the club are near to getting rid of Emery to be replaced by one of our old boys. This week alone Freddie,Arteta and Viera have all been mentioned. Not many profile managers available but it’s safe to assume Emery is on his last legs. What disturbs me is the backgroom team are just as split as the squad is divided. United have tried profile managers and now the norwegian and IMO it might take a number of managers and players to get amonst the elite again.Kroenke did via the club invest quite heavily in the Summer but I wonder who actually selects the players be it Emery or Raul as clearly it’s not working out.
What has happened to our iconic club ?It is hardly recognisible from a few years ago.

  51. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi Kelsey The problem I Believe comes down to one word ( Kroenke ) to him Arsenal is just another business and he does not care if we win or loose as long as we finish around 4th every year and make him money that all he cares and now I feel the players have adopted the same attitude if the owner don’t care why should we.

  52. rico says:

    Morning all.

Kelsey, I reckon there’s too much ‘we’re behind Emery’ coming from the board and players with Lacazette being the latest.

If all is rosy I’d have thought a keep quiet and carry on attitude would be a better option. But that’s just me.

Southampton beat us 2-1 in my dream last night. Lol

  53. allezkev says:

Afternoon Rico, nobody has mentioned the O’Leary situation…

Chips Keswick wanted him on the Board.

    Raul wasn’t happy about that.

    Raul speaks to Josh.

    Josh decides.

    O’Leary not on Board.

    Keswick not happy.

    Discuss?

  54. allezkev says:

I was speaking to a passenger yesterday, a West Ham fan whose son is also a Hammer but who works at Highbury House in the PR dept. He told me that his son said that Arsenal was a fantastic place to work, a great team of people in HH.

Well I could have told him that. 😀

  55. Adam says:

Afternoon Rico and all. Not a lot to enjoy as an Arsenal supporter these days.
Personally and after the way he carried on when he was Leeds manager against us, I wouldn’t want O’Leary either.

  56. kelsey says:

I agree Rico and I wish the players walked the walk instead of talk the talk, every day it’s someone else.
Aussie Geoff in principle you are right but I see no way we will makr top 4 this season.

  57. Potter says:

I think Chips is realising that since KSE got the whole shooting match his position and that of the old board is now mainly redundant. His attempt to get O’Leary on board was to bring some football knowledge within to his side and to rein in Raul’s power base .Seems that it failed spectacularly. .

  58. rico says:

You could be right Kev, and meanwhile the club drifts further away from those at the top.

Perhaps Chips looked to the wrong guy Potter, as Adam said, O’Leary was hardly thinking of Arsenal when he was at Leeds.

Someone like Dixon, Winterburn etc might be a better choice.

  59. Adam says:

Rico. If you remember, O’Leary gloated over Leeds beating us and actually went out to the Arsenal team coach and blew kisses at Pires just for spite. Robert leapt off the coach and an unpleasant scuffle happened. The players dragged Robert off of him and it was all very wrong. O’Leary wasn’t welcome at the club for some time after that.

  60. allezkev says:

Apparently Pires and O’Leary work together now in their ambassadorial roles, whether they’re mates, I don’t know?

I see that Frankfurt have been banned and Arsenal have limited ticket sales for our Europa tie, whenever that is? So the club already has its excuse in place to explain the reduced attendance at the Emirates, especially if we fail to beat Southampton.
Or am I just an old cynic?

  61. allezkev says:

I know what you say about O’Leary is true Adam and it showed very poor judgement on his behalf at the time. Whether he was trying to curry favour with the Leeds fans, I really am not sure, but it wasn’t great I’ve gotta agree?

I certainly went off of him for a long time and was surprised when he rocked up back at the Arsenal, didn’t he used to do Legends Tours, I’m not certain tbh?

I wonder what skills and experience he brings to the club or is he just mates with Chips?
We could do with a player or two, of the right ability and quality, on the Board and maybe someone who can bring a sense of observance over the empire building that Raul is currently indulged in, you know someone who knows the game and can question if certain policies and the business with certain agents is the wise course to take?

I don’t if this could have been O’Leary, or another ex Arsenal player with business experience?

What I will say in his favour is that he stayed loyal to Arsenal at a time when he could have buggered off like Liam Brady and Frank Stapleton!

Liam Brady returned and had a long career running our academy despite deserting Arsenal at 24 for Italy, when we badly needed him to stay.
    Just saying….

  62. rico says:

But won’t we still have the same number turning out as we usually do for a Europa fixture Kev?

The away section shouldn’t make much difference should it? Their empty seats are down to the ban, not the club. Or am I getting this totally wrong.?

  63. allezkev says:

I think it’s all to do with any tickets that season ticket holders return so they can be sold on ticket exchange to red members.
    Something like that Rico…

  64. allezkev says:

If we flop against Southampton the crowd vs Frankfurt could be below 40,000, despite the tickets sold nonsense the club indulges in – and makes themselves look very stupid in doing so.
