Mikel Arteta who?

Morning all.

Much has been made of the way Arsenal have gone about trying to entice Mikel Arteta away from Man City. All sorts of big words have been used to condemn our behaviour but I just can’t see Arsenal not doing things right. No official statement of complaint has been made by City, in fact Pep Guardiola has often expressed his support of his side kick becoming a manager. He wouldn’t stand in his way he said eighteen months ago when Arsene Wenger needed replacing and similar things have been said this time around too. In real life, you or I would simply resign, leave, and start a new job. But I guess in football, there’s a contract so a transfer fee/compensation whatever it’s call, to be agreed. Some sports outlets suggest that amount is £1 million, others £2 million but either way, it’s a drop in the ocean for City, Arsenal too if one considers how much money that lazy German number ten earns each week for doing practically nothing.

Mikel Arteta is our future, or at least that’s the plan I’m sure.

Talking of futures, I’d imagine for a few Arsenal players, theirs will soon be elsewhere. Aubameyang’s brother hasn’t done our strikers career much good with his social media comment on our new head coach and if he’s sharing it, no doubt the siblings have discussed it. Aubameyang is out of contract in eighteen months time but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he was out of the club next month. The chances of Mesut Ozil suddenly becoming a footballing workaholic are slim to none so I can’t imagine he’ll be hanging around stinking the club out for too much longer either. In fact Turkish newspaper Takvim, report that Fenerbahce have opened talks with Arsenal about a loan deal and say the “dream move can come true in January.”

Anyone who thinks they’re bigger than Arsenal Football Club or that Mikel Arteta isn’t a big enough name for the club, we’ll they can bugger off too.

Anyway, after postponing yesterday’s prematch press conference, the Arteta to Arsenal done deal story stepped up a gear, no doubt in anticipation of grand announcement today. That might sound sarcastic but for Arsenal Football Club, this move is big. Huge even.

The board have turned their back on experience. It’s like they’ve gone back in twenty three years in time and gone with a guy who we know very little about. Mikel Arteta the player we know very well. Consistent, decent, well respected and the nearest thing we’ve had to a captain since Vieira left. But Mikel the head coach is unknown because this will be his first time. Man City ‘people’ speak highly of him, similar to the Monaco players all those years ago when ‘Arsene who’ arrived in England. But when it comes to coaching at City, he’s surely just be carrying out the ‘Pep plan’ with a very different kind of player to who he’ll have at Arsenal. However, if what’s been said/written about Arteta being the one responsible for the way Raheem Sterling has improved his game, then watch out for Pépé next season. Martinelli, Nelson, Saka too.

Arsenal could have fought tooth and nail to get Allegri, Ancelotti, Benitez, Rogers, Pochettino, Mourinho even but no, they’ve opted for a guy who knows the club inside and out, the importance of the fans and respects both. A guy who worked closely with Per Mertesacker on the pitch, who will now work just as closely with him off the pitch. A guy who is right at the beginning of his career rather than someone whose glory days are behind him. Rogers and Pochettino aside that is. Perhaps.

Arsenal are a club stuck in a rut, not a good rut either. The job ahead for Mikel Arteta won’t be easy, nor will it be quick. As I said a couple of days ago, this is another new beginning. A different one I hope and certainly a better one. There’ll be player sales and new signings I’m sure but this all takes time. I’d imagine the starting place for sales will be those whose contracts are soon to expire along with anyone who isn’t prepared to get on board with Arteta. I’m sure we could all think of a few we’d like to see gone although I think I’d find it easier to list those I’d like to stay. But I base that on what’s gone by and who knows, Mikel Arteta might be the guy who through his approach to the players, changes my/our opinion on two or three of them. The signings, defensive ones must surely be the priority starting with a midfielder. But that’s for next month and the transfer windows to come.

It’s a new day, a new dawn as the saying, or rather song goes and yes, I’m feeling good about the future of The Arsenal.

Bublé can have that effect though. I hope Mikel Arteta can too…

See you in the comments guys..

  1. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, I love that line about Arteta not being a big enough name, after all, it’s the man who manages the club, not the name.
    Great post!!!
    Morning all.

  2. rico says:

    Thanks Scott.

I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next that’s for sure. Such a big job for a guy in his first managerial appointment. Last chance I think for a few, not including Ozil, who imo needs ridding of.

  3. ScottfromOz says:

I’d usually not advocate wholesale changes, but I think it is what’s needed right now.
Arteta should sit them all down individually and leave them in no doubt as to what’s expected, and what’s acceptable.
Any player that flinches or rills their eyes is out the door!!!
I think he’s got the backbone to handle the players quite easily.

  4. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi Rico and All The latest news I have read was that Man City are thinking about making Arteta for fill his contract out because of the way Arsenal officials have not spoken to them. If this happens then Arsenal officials head should roll P.S Rico how do I get rid of santa on my screen

  5. ScottfromOz says:

    Hi Geoff,
I can’t say your info is right or wrong, just how ironic it is that I just read the “latest” rumour that says we did in fact speak to City through the past week or so, and they’re just playing silly buggers about it.
Who knows what the truth is mate hahahahaha

  6. Bergkamp2Wright says:

    Morning all,

Wouldn’t be arsenal unless there was a saga regarding a signing of a new manager, player…….fill in the blank.

We are such a badly run club, it’s laughable and I think everyone in the football world is laughing.

The job Arteta has is going to be tough to say the least.

  7. rico says:

B2W, assuming it’s Arsenal holding this deal up of course?

This board is different to the one which haggled over signings isn’t it? Certainly personnel wise it is..

  8. Cicero says:

I hope the signing gets done but I’m not exactly over the moon about Arteta, it’s easy dealing with big names and bigger egos with the looming presence of one of the world’s top coaches behind you.

Another problem on the immediate horizon is coaching staff. Emery had his own crew and when he left they all jumped ship.

Freddie has pointed out how difficult he found it to work without a team of assistants. Presumably our new man will not be bringing half the coaching staff of Manchester City with him so he will be in the same fix.

I do hope there is a plan in place to remedy the situation but on present form I doubt it.

That said, good luck Mikel you’re certainly going to need it.

    Please Rico dump the Santa.

  9. Adam says:

    Morning Rico and all.
The board being stingy and disrespectful? Arsenal behaving inappropriately- again?
It’s all part of the usual Arsenal bullshit narrative isn’t it? We all know the press and the click-bait sites love to peddle this crap at every opportunity. I am just surprised that so many lap it up and regurgitate it on sites like HH.
    Get over it ffs.

  10. Bergkamp2Wright says:

I have zero faith in this board and ownership.

In my opinion we are in this mess because of them. Allowing the Emery shambles to drag on as long as it did has put us back another 18 months to 2 years.

  11. rico says:

I’d imagine Arteta will recruit his own team Cicero.

Morning Adam, we do like to kick our own. Or rather ‘some’ choose to.. Not for one minute do I think Arsenal are being anything other than professional in the way they are going about the Arteta move.

  12. ScottfromOz says:

I’m sure City have done their share of tapping up over recent seasons and again, the report I read a little earlier suggests it’s a lot of rubbish to say we haven’t been in contact with them over the negotiations.
    Who to believe?
    What to believe?
Why waste our time on what might or might not have happened but surely we, as fans, should at least give our own club the benefit of the doubt.
Good things are slowly starting to happen.

  13. Adam says:

Rico. We do and in this regard things have been getting worse for years. We know, or should know, that the press generally love to wind Arsenal fans up by spouting off any old bullshit. It has dragged the level of debate down and down as far as I can see to the current situation where someone, looking for some hits, says something ridiculous and people take it as the truth and re-cycle it as such. Remember the ‘rumour’ a few years ago that Arsenal were about to sign Carlos Fandango, or some player? People went crazy about it and it even made it to the U.K. daily papers before anybody bothered to check if the bloke actually existed.
    He didn’t.

  14. Wavy says:

    Morning all

All will be revealed at about 1.30 this afternoon, I expect.

I’m not sure we’ll see much coming or going this transfer window. Arteta, despite ‘knowing’ the squad will take time to make up his mind about off loading any of them, until he knows in his own mind, from the evidence of his own eyes, who stays and who does not. There may well be a mass clear out during the summer, but any movement will not be reactionary or on the advice of the powers that be! ( Their ineptitude is clear to see, but some of the players we complain most about have real talent and not to be discarded too casually).

Really, Mikel arrives this afternoon, we shall just have to wait and see what he brings to the table and, how he delivers ……….

Lovely day again here…so xmasy! Oh for a bit of old fashioned snow😂

  15. potter says:

Firstly showing my age :- Nina Simone was much better.
As to Arsenal , it’s all been said we can only wait to see what comes of it.
Change players , go with youth , buy in a few more or just coach the ones we have .
Arteta has a huge job on his hands .

  16. rico says:

I don’t remember that Adam but it doesn’t surprise me. It seems to me that this board are damned if they do or don’t. It’s clear they’re trying to sort things out but it won’t happen overnight.

I’m even warming to the idea of Arteta. 😆

  17. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi All Question if Arteta takes over this week and Aubameyang tells him I wants a transfer in January should we strip him as captain or leave it until January Me I would leave it until January and worry about other thing what do you think

  18. rico says:

Wavy, agree to a degree but he’d have seen how dismal some of these players have been. I doubt he’ll need too much time to make his mind up on them. Plus, Edu and Raul might have plans to axe one or five. Lol

  19. rico says:

But not as nice on the eye Potter. Lol

I think that’s one thing we’ll all agree on, Arteta has one heck of s job on his hands. At least Raul, Edu and Merts are footballing men.

  20. andrewh1313 says:

Morning all, good supportive post rico. What I hope, is that Arteta includes the fans in the journey, in a way that we live every success, every problem, players booted out, along with him. As one family as it should be.

  21. andrewh1313 says:

Geoff, I’ll be very disappointed if Auba remains captain for even one game under Arteta.
We need someone involved in the thick of the action, either at the back or midfield, galvanising those around him. No club more than Arsenal needs this type of captain at the moment.

  22. andrewh1313 says:

Adam, I also wanted Poch or Allegri. But I doubt either of them wanted us, why would they with little funds and a poor atmosphere?

So what better than taking a gamble on an astute tactical young coach who has shown he is a very decent human being. He will give his best. Fans who don’t give him every chance can clear off like some of the players. If it doesn’t work out, ok, in 18 months we start again.

  23. ScottfromOz says:

    Hi Adam,
I’ve got no issue with people having a question over Arteta as it’s obvious he is unproven, but many have written him off already.
I’m very confident he will be a brilliant manager but am I certain?
    No way lol
If we’d gone with Ancelotti, Allegri or anyone else, I’d support the man 100% but we have a lot of fans who simply like to moan and criticise, no matter what.
Hopefully, he can turn them around quickly but then, 2 or 3 poor results, and they’ll turn again lol

  24. rico says:

Thanks Andrew, the way Arteta spoke in his final Arsenal interview, I think the fans will be very much in his mind through this. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick. Lol

  25. ScottfromOz says:

Common sense isn’t that common though, Adam lol
Passion, ignorance and even arrogance can take over and I’m sure fans all want what’s best, but when things don’t go their way, surely acting out and criticising the choice isn’t the way to go.
I’m sure some will be hoping he fails just so they can say “told ya so”.
I’m hoping Arteta succeeds because I want the club to succeed.
As you gents said earlier, the only certainty about Arteta is the size of the job ahead.
May the force be with him 🙂

  26. Apangu Iddi Amin says:

Arsenal really need a clear out of the fringe players because players have got safe heaven at Arsenal where by flop player in any league can get his chance of joining the club and make one good performance to buy priority and sit down to enjoy his weekly wages knowing that in Arsenal there is no fight for position and thats all what it is in this club.

  27. ScottfromOz says:

Did anyone read the comments from DeBruyne on Arteta?
Seems he’s almost Mikels biggest fan on the planet lol

  28. ScottfromOz says:

    Rico,
I hate to say this about the man, but Merson sounds an absolute goose at times, and this was one of them.

  29. S says:

    Thanks BT.
    That’s one bit I read.
I also saw another where he was discussing Artetas personality and temperament and how we could really use his type as a manager.
He really seems to rate Arteta massively.

  30. ScottfromOz says:

I don’t think he is capable of that, Rico lol
I’m off for the night and hope to wake up to the big news.
    Night all.

  31. Mike says:

Hi Everyone, Fine post Rico thanks!
I’m catching up again (poxy migraines) I’ve missed some good stuff.
There was no way that everybody was going to be happy with the Arteta appointment. We all have our own views and ideas and that’s good. One thing we should all be together on is to support whoever comes in completely.
I wasn’t sure about Arteta, but then I wasn’t sure about any of the others either. The board have taken a bold step .and maybe for once we should congratulate them for showing a bit of backbone. They could have gone for a recognized old experienced head but I think they’ve stuck their necks out and trying something fresher.
We have to remember that Unai . as hard as he tried could not get this team to play. Freddie has had a good try and he can’t get the players up to scratch. These two men are no idiots, it’s not the style of play , tactics etc letting us down, it’s the players themselves.
We must remember this, and not be too harsh on the new manager. I think he has very little to work on and hope that the first thing he changes is our spineless attitude.
Football fans are very fickle(me included) but I hope our new manager can get a good chance at turning things around for us.

    I like the Santa Rico!

  32. Limey says:

    Afternoon Rico/everyone,
well said Scott @ 11.41 Mikel’s first job will be to decide who stays/who goes.He must have an idea already but the smart thing to do will probably be to take a few training sessions.
I had to laugh at Ozil having a knock ahead of the Everton game, maybe it’s a tactical injury ahead of that rumoured loan move, that would be a Christmas miracle.
Duncan Ferguson will have Everton wound up for tomorrow’s game
    Fingers crossed COYG

  33. rico says:

Thanks Mike, I don’t think Freddie had enough time to make an impact but in any case, too many of our lot are living in a comfort zone. A zone Arteta needs to get them out of from day one.

    I hope h3 brings a big stick with him…

  34. rico says:

Mikel said: “This is a huge honour. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game and that’s been made very clear to me in my discussions with Stan and Josh Kroenke, and the senior people from the club.

“We all know there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that but I am confident we’ll do it. I’m realistic enough to know it won’t happen overnight but the current squad has plenty of talent and there is a great pipeline of young players coming through from the academy.”

  35. allezkev says:

Great post Rico, thanks for that…

Spot on Adam, you just have to read between the lines and from where the stories are coming from, for example if it’s a story written by John Cross, you know it’s going to be a load of bollocks.

  36. rico says:

Talking of which Kev, Sky sports went straight to Souness who says he’d have preferred to see an manager with experience at Arsenal. Does he not realise Arteta will be a head coach? Anything to knock the club I guess..

  37. Mike says:

    Great ! It’s done.
Now if Ozil won’t train , Kick the poisonous skunk out !
Let’s start as we mean to go on………Good luck Mikel !!

  38. Wavy says:

Kev, didn’t Queen write a song that included him in it? “Doova Fandango” great player.

‘Head Coach’ not Manager. Fundamental difference he only has to concentrate on the players and improving their performances. They’re at rock bottom at present so, you would think the only way is up!

I believe he will be like a breath of fresh air to most of the squad. They have completely lacked any sense of direction and I think it won’t be long before we see improvements all round the club and the levels performances on and off the pitch.

    At least I hope so…..😀😀

  39. Cicero says:

The deed is done, for better or worse Arteta is our new Head Coach. Everybody needs to get behind him for the good of the club.

I don’t think there is any quick fix, he must be given time.

  40. andrewh1313 says:

    Agree rico.

Hopeless on Sky, one question and answer, then repeated by presenters word for word what he said rather than showing rest of conference.

Switched to Arsenal.com and saw whole thing, bright young man, let’s wish him the best.

  41. Wavy says:

    The very same Cicero.

I like Arteta. I liked him as a player. I like him as thoughtful human being and I think I’m going to like him as a successful coach. I’ve got a feeling in my………?
    …….water!

I’m not sure how we’ll fare on Saturday though. A win would be outstanding, a draw, given the present state of things would be okay but a loss would be par for our present course, so………Freddie will be either hero or villain but fingers will be pointed at Mikel. Perhaps not the best of places to begin ones new career!

Still raining….another weather event. Gaia is reeking a terrible revenge on the world and mankind everywhere. Imo.

  42. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning all.
I’m glad it’s finally done and we can all move on.
I think I’d speak for most fans when I say we just want to see an improvement on effort and endeavour because if we get that, the results will follow.
I do believe we have a decent squad that’s open to a hell of a lot of improvement if Arteta can find the trigger.
It’s for some big holes in it but it’s also got some massive quality, so for now, I want Mikel to try and get the very best out if what he does have, rather than try and make them play a game that suits players we do not have, and I believe that was Emery’s biggest failing.
Why can’t Ozil and a few others be reinvigorated?
    Can Arteta do that?
Let’s all hope so, even if it’s just to improve players value in the market.
I think we should all be very excited, or at least, intrigued and eager to see what’s to come and ask yourself the last time you felt this way about the club.
Imo, he is the perfect candidate for us here and now.
    Let’s all hope he is.

  43. Le Coq Monster says:

    Great post Rico.
Was listening to talksport all day waiting for the news and nothing, went to gym for 2 hours and yippeee!

No guarentees, but I am really excited about this appointment and think Mikel is the next best thing, he wont get the money Pep gets from his owners, but imo tactically this is the best for us on a tight budget.
Watched everything since on Arsenal.com and everywhere else and impressed is an understatement!
For all those wanting experience , Allardyce, Warnock, Pulis and countless others incluing Poch` have it and no trophies either and remember technically we dont need an experienced manager!…………as technically Arteta is head coach not manager and he has now had experience as a assistant head coach!
Not to tempt fate, but an anagram of Mikel Arteta is……………..A Title Maker !
I dont know about getting my Arsenal back, but I have definately got my Arsenal excitement back!…………….and I`m ready to give him years to try and rectify over a decade of multiplying decay.

    Good read…………………….

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50827317

  44. ScottfromOz says:

    Great read, LC.
The article, not your 10 minutes of drivel hahahaha
    We have our man, mate!!
Let’s hope he’s up to it!!!
I love the last part where Santi spoke, as it’s just another reference from a fellow player who speaks in glowing terms of Mikel, and these are people well qualified to comment so it really does point to the man being more than capable.
    Can I say it again?
    I am genuinely excited!!!!

  45. ScottfromOz says:

At a glance, he’s won a lot of fans over with his press conference.
That’s only a start, of course, but a damn event one.
Let’s hope he’s taken the best of those two gents, throws a bit of himself in and bingo, he will be a genius 🙂

  46. rico says:

Thanks Lc. But who is near Reading, Santa? Lol

I must have misunderstood then Andrew..

Still, he’s in now and I’m really looking forward to watching the next few weeks and months of Arsenal.

  47. ScottfromOz says:

Just saw the Press Conference in its entirety and my goodness, it was impressive.
No cliches, everything was articulated and explained brilliantly.
He was calm and confident without being cocky and when he spoke of the Arsenal approaching him, you really could see his eyes light up.
This is a man unlike Ancelotti, Allegri, Poch and others because he truly wants to be at our club, and clearly, it’s not just another step in a career.
I lived one line where he said his job is to understand the players, find out what’s going wrong and remove all their excuses.
Common sense and simple, right, but also absolutely brilliant!!!
He’s the man for the job.
    I’m even more adamant now.

  48. ScottfromOz says:

Even more exciting is the fact that I finally have bloody WordPress working, and I don’t have to punch in my username and email address every time I comment hahahaha

  49. ScottfromOz says:

Rico, it just seemed so natural and honest.
I’m going to stop now…….I’ve said enough on the man lol
Time for him to prove to us all he’s the right man for the job.
Freddy remains in charge tomorrow but Arteta had a word to the players telling them what he wants to see so let’s hope there is a change for the better immediately.

  50. Limey says:

I think Steve Round has a reputation as a long ball Charlie,he has worked with big Sam, still no bad thing to mix up styles, positivity reigns !

  51. andrewh1313 says:

He listened intently to the questions, then without too much thought, just gave honest answers how he sees it. With many managers being like politicians these days, and we’ve had enough of that recently, it was refreshing.

Of course it’s only first day, but he had a twinkle in his eyes that wouldn’t leave. He will probably soon get worn down, let’s remember this is a team that hasn’t looked like it can beat anyone in the last 6 weeks.

Also watched 20 minute Raul and Edu video about the interview process and how they chose Arteta. Quite open of Arsenal to show that. The main thing coming out of that was how Edu and Arteta immediately connected, and how they can work together.

  52. ScottfromOz says:

Andrew, I honestly do not believe he will get worn down, mate.
I think the exact opposite is the case-he will simply remove anything or anyone that’s not buying into what he wants to achieve and they’ll be out the door before they can do any damage.
I can’t wait to find out, either way 🙂
That breath of fresh air hanging around the club right now is just beautiful!!!

  53. andrewh1313 says:

I’m trying not to get carried away Scott. Most of us were pretty enthusiastic about Emery after his first interview. But I know what you mean, although Arteta feels one of us, I think he has a certain steel, and won’t be afraid to use it. The way he wouldn’t commit to Ljungberg’s role, might be interesting. If he has a number 2 lined up, would be surprised to see him back with the Youth team.

PS, I still have to put in email every time, them Name and gravatar complete. Have you managed to get all three saved?

  54. ScottfromOz says:

Andrew, ilogged into WordPress, deleted HH from my account and just started again.
Worked immediately-no idea why though lol
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with his coaching staff for sure.
The one thing I’ve always believed is that Arteta had real steel in him, which was always a concern for many but it does seem his PC has already changed a lot of opinions.
It’s oniy words, admittedly, but I doubt he could possibly have been more impressive.
I’m absolutely buzzing and I mean that.
It’s been a damn long time.
I did have a laugh when I read critics (elsewhere) saying they were disappointed he couldn’t manage wearing a suit on his first day.
Some will always find something, but I watched a clip a few minutes back showing him walking in wearing a suit, and being handed the shirt to wear for photos and the PC.
    Gotta laugh lol
Sorry Rico-I am trying to tone it down hahahaha

  55. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi Scott looks like Santa not coming to me this year. Arteta and Edu can talk the talk as much as they want but can the walk the walk now its time to prove he can coach, As for me I admit I did not want Arteta but I will support him because he is our coach now let see what happens over the next 12 months

  56. ScottfromOz says:

Geoff, I’ll be very happy when Arteta proves you wrong, and I know you hope that’s the case as well 🙂
We will start playing better football.
Our individuals will start enjoying their football again.
Fans will be excited about the club.
It’ll take time, some people will never be happy but those with genuine feelings for the club will just want to see slow and steady improvement.
Sit back and enjoy the ride mate.

  57. allezkev says:

I’m not sure as I’ve not had Sky myself for over 10 years, but I wonder, has their reporting become less factual and more sensationalism in recent times, because I keep on reading from blogs at how appalling their output is now.

    Click baity even.

  58. Mike says:

I think he might need all of that Twelve Months Geoff.
I’ve got to admire him, he really does look like he means business.
He’s got a shite group of players to work with, and he’s taken on one hell of a job.
Some of you are hoping for miracles with Ozil, I’ve given him too many chances already and every time he disappoints.
I can’t wait to see what Arteta does with all our slackers , from what I’ve seen already he won’t put up with it.
Bloody Good Luck to him, I really hope everyone gets behind him.

  59. Mike says:

Hi Kev, I won’t get Sky anymore, I watch it at my Sons if I’m there and it is just Crap.
Seems the presenters are more important than everything else.

  60. allezkev says:

Holding, Bellerin and Özil “being assessed” ahead of Everton. Ceballos returning to training next week.

  61. ScottfromOz says:

    Mike,
    Arteta at least knows Ozil,
So either he will try and mow the most of him, or he will get rid of him so either way I see a positive result.
    Kev,
The media has a lot less credibility in the world now than it ever has, imo.
Maybe we are just waking up to them, maybe they’re changing, in general.

Hi Mike, same with me, I see it at my sons’ but it’s less about news or information and more about the models they have presenting the programmes. All very odd to me mate…

  63. allezkev says:

Yes Digger, we access our info so differently now that the old outlets are becoming less and less relevant and more and more click baity

    They’re all crap now…

    It’s nauseating…

    Night all…

  64. Mike says:

Yeah Scott, I’m sure you’re right about Arteta sorting Ozil one way or another.
I go on about it because Ozil could be such an amazing player if he put himself out a bit. But time and time again his attitude gets in the way.

  65. ScottfromOz says:

    Later, Kev.
Mike, I just watched the PC again-3rd time around lol
Arteta’s comment about it being his job to get the best out of each player seems to go exactly against what Emery was doing.
He wanted everything done his way and that’s fine, a manager lives and dies on his decisions, but at the risk of repeating myself, he didn’t seem to make any effort to adapt his style to the squad he had available.
The best managers always make best with what they have and then change the squad and playing style over time but Emery tried to change the style all at once, and it was never going to work.
18 months ago, Emery should’ve done whatever was necessary to sell Ozil, because asking him to defend was just never going to work.
Mikel will have an idea how to get Ozil’s best out of him and as he said, he will find out the problems, remove any excuses and if in 3-4 months time Ozil isn’t performing, then there can be absolutely nobody to blame but himself.
Arteta isn’t passing the buck, he’s taking the responsibility to get the best out of the players and that’s exactly what we should want to hear, imo.

  66. Aussie Geoff says:

Hi Scott and Mike if he keeps this team I will give him 12 month to prove him self how ever if he comes out and say’s I am getting rid of the older players and starting from scratch with our current young players and we will bye some more young players I am happy to give him 2 years it would be great either way to make top 4 but all I want to see in the first 12 months is our team to stop giving up so easily and stop running away from other teams strikes then I would be happy to finish 5th or 6th for a year or two while the young players mature

  67. Cicero says:

If the papers are to be believed, and they do occasionally get things right, first out of the door will be Freddie to Malmo as Head Coach. Next Xhaka to Hertha Berlin. Then Aubameyang to anywhere so long as he can play in the CL.

There is talk of Ozil going on loan to a Turkish club but we’ve heard that before and nothing came of it then.

Somebody mentioned a new member of our coaching team being a long ball advocate. With our strikers it won’t work as they are truly reluctant to fight it out with centre backs and head the ball.

If Arteta succeeds in cleaning out the Augean Stable that our squad has become he can rightfully change his name to Hercules. 😉

  68. ScottfromOz says:

Guys, we do need to understand that it’s not just a matter of saying we are selling a player-we need someone willing to buy him.
Yes, we need a clean out but at the same time, some players we fans might like to see gone will remain.
