Morning all,
I’m still thinking about how well Bacary Sagna played in the centre of defence on Saturday.
This has been a funny old season so far for our French right back. He’s gone from being one of the best right backs in the game, to being the most inconsistent in the Premier League. Not the kind of performances we have been used to witnessing.
But on Saturday, we all watched the performances of old from him. he was here, there, everywhere. Whether that be with foot or body, he let nothing by him and with body came soul, and he sure had that.
He was immense!
So should he stay there?
Koscielny has been having a mare in the middle and we all know he can play right back and regardless of that, we have Carl Jenkinson and Nico Yennaris who are both good right backs.
No doubt the Jenkinson critics will now jump on and bleat on about how he’s not good enough, he could have cost us the game on Saturday, he should be sold etc etc etc…
Poppycock I say.!
He was hard done by on Saturday if we are to compare the other fouls which were allowed to go unpunished and this guy is a Gooner, he’ll give his all for Arsenal. Don’t ever forget that as it’s something many fans call for quite often.
Seriously though, if playing central gets Sagna back to playing at the top of his game, the team will only benefit. Wenger likes manoeuvring players around the pitch. This one could actually work!
This coming Saturday Jenkinson will be serving his one match ban in any case but we can expect so see a couple of changes to a side which will face Blackburn. Not too many though I hope, I want us to win this cup….
Personally I feel these next few few matches are huge and will play a huge part in how we finish the season. I’m not overly fussed about the Champions League fixture against Bayern, I’d rather we focussed on the FA Cup, winning our next two league matches and push on from there. Of course, if we happen to beat Bayern I won’t complain!
Sky Sports reported yesterday that the Vasco da Gama youngster Indio is heading to us for a trial.
I haven’t a clue who he is and I couldn’t find anything on Wikki about him either, all I could find was ‘the highly-rated teenage midfielder will spend a few days training with the Gunners and is determined to make an impression’.
Talking to Globo Esporte he said:
I’m anxious for this new stage in my life, I’ll spend a week at Arsenal. It will be cool, I hope I enjoy it.
Of course I have the dream of playing for a European club, but everything has its right time. It will be a good experience. I want to learn.
Do you know any more about this kid, if so, do share with us all……
That’s it for another day, have a good one..
Morning Gooner’s
Morning Rico.
Re:Jenkinson, I couldn’t agree more. As he matures, his game will improve and those rough edges will be smoothed off. But you cannot coach heart and desire into someone if they haven’t got it, and he has if in spades for the Gunners.
I seen quite a few, very technical players at Arsenal in recent season’s, who frankly couldn’t give a toss, whether we won or lost…
Every team needs a balance, a Parlour, a Winterburn or a Keown, for every Pires and Bergkamp…
Indio? Sounds like a character out of a Spaghetti Western!
Morning Ak and all…
I’m a huge fan of his Ak, and how long ago was it when he last played??
Like you say, he’ll learn….
😆 re Indio….
Anyone knocking Jenks needs to take a good hard look at the kid….he is a long term player for sure.
We fans too often write off a player too quickly.
Sagna needed a change, any change, as he was looking disinterested and flat.
No need to bomb forward meant he had plenty of legs during the weekend game, and it showed, he looked fresh and happy.
I throw my hand up to suggesting he was bloody terrible a few weeks back, but also can spruik that i suggested he play central v Sunderland.
I hope we go after Bayern as we have very little to lose.
The FA cup must be a priority.
Morning all.
Santos could complete his loan switch today…
Just read that TV could need an operation again…..
i also want to know who that is!!!!!!!???????
There were two heavy challenges( possible yellows ) just prior to Jenks first booking one on Jack and the other on Theo I think. I remember thinking that the ref was losing it and that he would book someone soon. Sadly the next foul was Jenkinsons’ made it easy for him.
Hi Scott – the match against the neighbours means more to me than BM, but yes we have nothing to lose, other than players to injury…
But that can happen any game….
Indio – or a friend of Indiana Jones. Hope he has the same guts and determination of a Jones!
We will mash the Spuds, Rico 🙂
Santos will only go if they can get some sense out of Rio , As I said the other day it’s Fat Tuesday and Rio comes to a business standstill throughout Mardi Gras , and that’s the last day of the window to approve the papers.
Still at least he will be partying whilst he is out there so that should be another few inches on the waistband.
That ref should have set the right tome from the off Potter. He mucked up big time with Cattermole, from that moment on he had lost it….
Morning All,
Lets not forget Jenks is also a little ring rusty… he needs games to improve, sitting on the bench doing him no favours at all, start of the season he started off slow made mistakes but got better and better with each game. He’s only had a few games in the last few months since Bac came back from injury.
Bale is on fire, stop him and we could Scott….
Apparently is done Potter, should be confirmed today… Fingers crossed
Reserves play tonight, hope to see Miquel in the side, he needs game time ahead of the weekend…
Bale….can’t stand that bastard.
Maybe if we loan him an Arsenal shirt for five minutes we can kick the shit out of him and the ref will allow it….especially if it is one of Jacks shirts!!
I was hoping they’d play Fulham and Frimpong faced him Scott….
He could do a shirt swap with Diaby. He likes white ones apparently.
Back in a bit, got to pop out….
Morning all. I do agree about Jenkinson but, he is an Arsenal player and should be bright enough to work out that making that challenge was dumb. Therefore I think he should be punished with the application of electricity.
Adam your so spiteful…..
No internet for a few days and your all vindictive and nasty to people……!
I take it cattle prod for Jenks in the ice bath then…?
Wath. Dats wot all me bitches say….
But, yes. That would seem appropriate. If we hadn’t got the 3 points I would have added some water boarding. I’m told that is very nice at this time of year. 🙂
Squillaci then………
Lee. Now you’re talking.
I hear you’ve had tinternet problems my old China?
Ridiculous situation we find ourselves in with Le Squil being close to a start…..another bit of Wenger negligence! Ho hum….
I have mate. I lost connectivity on Wednesday night and got it back on Saturday night. I am considering changing to another provider but find that I hate them all equally.
I’m with BT and they are fairly efficient….
I have heard this Lee. I am on a fibre optic at the moment.
There’s cream available for that Adam…
Lee. 🙂
Copper cable here as provided by the GPO! Works ok with the new fangled BT provider.
Not cheap though! We’ve been promised fibre optics in the next millennium! Can’t wait!!
As for Santo – perhaps he needed a bit of copper cable attached to his temples to make him move a little faster. Lucky old Grimmeo! Another gremlin in their team. But good luck to him despite his lack of ability at least he was always cheerful! In defeat especially!
Has the Pope taken Rafa’s job??
My word the snow is falling well here, that’s me home for the remainder of the day…..
Wavy says:
‘But good luck to him despite his lack of ability at least he was always cheerful! In defeat especially’!
😆 😆
Changes are taking place in arsenal for sure. Players with poor/low mentality are being shifted out either on loan (Santos, Djourou, Chamakh, Bendtner Park, etc) or they are on the last 4 months of their contract (Arshavin, Squillaci). For those on loan it’s an opportunity to prove that they have a future with the club. Jury is still out on Gerv. Get rid of those bad eggs and we will be a force to reckon with next season.
Looks like the team is now coming together. It’s good that Wenger tends to tweak the team and keep opposition guessing who will be in the starting line-up aka Stoke and Sunderland
I love the way Jack is developing, but wouldn’t want to compare him to messi yet. But there are traits of that manifesting already. Messi didn’t peak until he was 23 and Jack lost a season through injury
The way Jack runs at opposing players and glides past them is a joy to behold. Am glad Jack is a gunner through and through(DNA)
Jenks will come good, lets not forget he has being sparingly used since sagna returned from injury. Apart from the 2 challenges he made that got him sent off, he was solid. He was only lacking match practise
Cattermole is a vile idiot who should have being sent off in the first 10mins for some atrocious fouls on Ramsey, Wilshere and Cazorla. The referees in EPL are too lenient compared to the ones in LaLiga
for other news, Pope Benedict resigns, I hope the little boy(RVP) inside him won’t tell him to sign up to become the next pope
You’ll be snowed in for the week Rico….. Rest that poorly heel…!
About time too though emma. This should have all taken place a couple of seasons ago, unless of course AW really did have to make do as no money was being given to him…
Just hope it’s not a case of too little too late….
Agree on Cattermole, he wouldn’t have got passed, (or is it past Adam), 88 seconds had a stronger referee been in charge…
Ha ha Wath, every cloud eh, the cut has still not healed over you know. Darn thing!
rico – I think its the resources available to him at that time that made him to put up with some of these players. Who would have thought Squillaci’s place would have being taken up by Miguel or Nacho would have being brought in for the injured Gibbs when Fatty fish and chips Santos is there. There is an overhaul taking place now which is good for the mentality of the entire squad.
Think how much we will get off the wage bill when the following get jogged on…
Fabianski,JD,Squill,Santos,Arshavin,Rosicky,Chamakh,
Park,NB! To start with…….
Afternoon all,
Good post Rico. No comment on B.Sagna because he is a sloid player and looking at Debuchy, Sagna is still class as form is temporary.
CJ25 will come good but this just shows that he needs Sagna around to still learn off for at least another year.
Emma, the boy M.Sissoko looked like a deer caught in the headlights (something like that) on Saturday. I am not sure why Pardew is using him as the 2nd striker but hey their problem 😉
Indio? Another Latin American who will not relish a winter in Stoke is not the answer imho. We still have wellington and Bothelo (spelling) who have contributed jack all to us and are stillstruggling in 2nd tier Spainish football… Vasco da Gama is not the same team it use to be 10 to 15 years ago so I am not sure about the talent pool even though they are sitting 5th in their league..
Rico. I hope the heel has not been assessed by Wenger, “eet will teck 2to3 wicks to ‘eal.” And then there will be a re-assessment, “wi gurt eet a liddle wrong, zee ‘eal vill teck maw lyk sree munfs” zen eet vill bi lyk noo,”
Or will it be a JW injury – the never ending story? No more walking Fido, no more nipping off to cook lunch, dinner or tea! Just anchored to the keyboard for our entertainment?
tsGH_ Pardew doesn’t know what he is doing I guess. Sissoko is best utilize as a box-box midfielder. Playing him behind the striker is just plain stupid
Thanks Ts, I hope Sagna stays too, I’m sure he will
🙂 Wavy, it’s ok now thanks, will teach me to remove my foot from the door before trying to shut it….
I doubt Indio will join, he’s just having a trial but I suspect he’ll go elsewhere, he won’t get a permit for 5 -10 years of we signed him…
Wish we’d have signed him emma…
Same here rico especially at that price… another Michu?
Emma on Pope resigning, isn’t it interesting that May 2013 is the 100th anniversary of Fatima that the Bishop of Fatima prophesied as the day Rome gets destroyed which is the revised judgement day a few months after the second to last pope leaves office.
I think Debucy will come good Ts, same old with those coming from another league, he needs a few months to get used to it…
Really thought Newcastle would get something from SHL…
https://twitter.com/gremiooficial/status/300747946578829314
You tease Syg 🙂
André Santos will be presented on Monday at 14h, in the conference room of the Olympic.
The buffet will be interesting…..that is if anyone can get there in front of him!
Phew Syg …
They won’t get by either side of him Lee, that’s for sure….
That’s funny Lee …. really funny
Santos man-marking the vol-au-vents! 😆
Santos man-marking …… That will be a first……
I thought that Fatima was pretty good with a javelin all the same.
I don’t think Jenks was hard-done by his red card. I would say Lee Wackamole got off easy. Every tackle should be taken on its own merit and not judged in comparison to others. His two yellows were deserved.
Sessegnon caused both our full backs problems all game. He got past Nacho easily a couple times too. Jenks first yellow should have been in the back of his head. It’s not a mistake I would have expected him to make.
And in the jungle apparently Ak……
https://twitter.com/DesKellyDM/status/300924071124799489
😀 Kev
The Olympics one or ‘… Get me out of here’ ?
SYG… my vote will go to Munchini if I was invited to the next papal conclave. At least Roberto managed to take some of his super stars to church last May to pray before the injury time win of the league.. 😉
Afternoon All.
Nice one Rico, Sagna’s form i felt dropped when Theo started his Plight for a central roll, A full backs job is tough enough but when you defend then sprint down the field to support your forwards it becomes a tough ask when your winger cuts inside and leaves you on your own. I believe giving Theo a free run is making Sagna’s job more dificult. We play Giroud up front and although Theo is scoreing goals i feel its at Sagna’s expense. Playing Jenkinson at right back and Sagna at centre back appears to be solving the problem as Sagna still backs Jenkinson up. The trouble with giving Theo a free run is that there will be times where players are out of position.
Will, in it’s own right no, but compare what he did to some of the other tackles which went unpunished. Then he’s hard done by.
Had we not won though, he’d have been lambasted no doubt….
Thanks Sp, but what about the midfield player in a 3, he too should be helping out…. Cant blame it all on Theo 😉
Afternoon Gooners,
Jenks will be more dexterous after last weekend’s event. Sessegnon gave him a stern test as well, arguably their best attacker and probably cause a few right backs in the league a headache. Dare I say I liked the look on him.
Pope Smeagol gives up his preciousssssss
Not blaming anyone one Rico just expressing my views thats all. I just dont understand why a player lines up on the wing then leaves that position as soon as the ball goes there.
last week my doctor told me to watch what i eat.
just been out and bought a ticket for the grand national.
Hi Dg, he’ll learn that’s for sure…
I know Sp, hence my 😉
I strongly suspect AW has given TW that kind of free role though. Vermaelen lines up as a CH but how often is he up playing centre forward.?
It’s the way Wenger plays the team….
That’s bad mog 😉
Mog 😛
SteveP I find my view in your Sagna assessment. Spot on imho. Though I do think there’s a weakness in frequency making forward runs. Given the few headers we score from crossings.
Dg – go 442, that would solve the problem.
Ginge my buddy, you must be gutted given the rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana.
Btw what’s the Ghanaian dish called I had the privilege to taste, it was some kind of stew with a ball of rice? Had a friend’s father made it for me a few times way back but forgot the name.
Hi DG, dosn’t mater who plays down the wing really as none of them can cross a ball. Mertsacker only goes up for corners to keep fit. 🙂
Rico I would love that system to be mixed with our current, changing setup to requirements on the fly. Many opponents take too much heart from penetrating our half at will.
Sp
‘Mertsacker only goes up for corners to keep fit’.
😆 You don’t rate him too highly either then….
Findus have struck a sponsorship deal with West Ham on the basis that they’ve been pony for the last 7 years too…
Mertsacker helped us out when we needed somebody, but i wouldnt want to keep him. Wenger likes him so he’ll probably stay.
As would I Dg, always say we should change things around a bit, be less predictable….
🙂 Lee. Big Sam the next to go I reckon…
I’m not sold on him either Sp, but so many think he’s a rock for us so looks like you and me are wrong 🙁
SteveP LOL
Here was me thinking Mert could do a few Crouch-ones for us.
seriusly the doctor said i should be on a stable diet.
do you think i should start with findus ready meals.
BFG missing urgency in his play, tactical awareness in abundance. Rarely see him trying a long haul pass to skip midfield.
Hay mog, carrots are good for you…
Maybe he should try a hoof once in a while Dg 😉
Santos has gone, confirmed on afc.com 😛
rico and fizzy drinks contain to much shergar apparantly.
do you have the carrots with hay or on there own.
Our entire back line should Rico. We allow opponents to organize a packed crew with Wenga-ball. Our fullbacks pass in, then approach the player they picked to receive it back to either have a pass-and-go executed or deliver it central midfield from close range.
Watching the football on Sky yesterday I alternated between amazement and disappointment before moving through several stages of boredom, eventually emerging from this torpor, filled with a sense of irritation which slowly bloomed into anger. This of course was me, viewing through the irritating portal and tinted specs of an Arsenal supporter.
Aston Villa are a really awfully bad team, managed by a puffy red-faced Scot who isn’t called Ferguson. But I do sense a proto-Sir Alex through the sweating, blood-vessel ravaged face that currently belongs to Paul Lambert. His inept team of “yoofs” are taking money under the false pretence of being a PL club from a bunch of supporters that I have always found to utterly sickening. I remember, only a few weeks after Eduardo almost had his leg amputated by a Birmingham player called Taylor, that Villa came to play at the Emirates. Leaving the ground that day we were treated to the full gamut of Brummie humour as a number of the most moronic individuals the world has ever seen began their gut-wrenching tirade of abuse aimed at Eduardo, who was probably undergoing his 4th operation aimed at reattaching the limb that the creature named Taylor had tried so hard to remove. It was a horrible day, not only for Arsenal, but for football. Only the sound of Adrian Durham pleasuring himself over the whole incident could have been worse.
As a fair minded individual myself I made a silent wish that day that both Villa and Birmingham be destroyed by a carefully aimed and adequately-sized asteroid that landed squarely on Alex McLeish’s horribly freckled head at something approaching terminal velocity before spreading outward with a seismic shock wave that destroyed all things that both those clubs represented. And if a small chunk of that heavenly body should break of during entry to the Earth’s atmosphere and find its way towards Stokes ground then I might believe that there is a God after all.
Yesterday they played the team that is called West Ham although these Hammers bear very little resemblance to the Happy Hammers of old, who used to have a reputation for playing good football. These people are lead by half-man, half-Walrus Sam Allardyce, a slobbering creature from some industrial town oop North where men are men and drooling from the side of your mouth onto a bronze polyester shirt and a striped kipper tie, as you are extolling the virtues of physical football and denigrating Arsene Wenger is applauded.
Quite what Allardyce has done to West Ham is unclear except for the fact that very little football is being played. Fat Sam’s coaching manual is the world’s shortest book and comprises of only five words. Boot it high and long. Thus, as this horrible man slithers around the touch line clapping his slimy flippers together, the Hammers faithful stare skywards, waiting for the ball to drop from the heavens onto the forehead of either Andy Carroll or Carlton Cole. How he got to the Boleyn ground is painfully clear. That he should leave as soon as possible for somewhere else is the fervent wish of the majority of West Ham supporters.
The other game featured better football certainly but the question as to how a team as uninspiring as Manchester United are running away with the PL is as depressing as it is shameful. As Arsenal count out the money they got for Van Persie and we reflect on the news that negotiations had been going on for so long plus of course Arsene’s recent announcement as to the fact that he knew that Van Persie would give them the championship (thanks for that PR masterstroke)), we can but ponder where we are and where we are heading.
breaking news the squillster is definately leaving in the summer transfer window.
he’s going to be the face of findus in a new advertising campain as they try to regain there reputation.
BUT RvP was sold for “footballing reasons!”
You couldn’t make this shit up, could you?
Funny read Adam, btw!
Lee. I was, as you say, off on one. 🙂
Wenger’s disaster-buy waddles home…Andre Santos, Arsenal’s portly panic-signing from 2011, has been sent on loan to Brazilian club Gremio.
In what has been yet another example of Wenger’s inability to judge/integrate or improve a defender, Santos has been nothing short of a laughably expensive disaster – the latest poster boy for Wenger’s brainless economic model.
Purchased from Fenerbahce for £6.2m on the last day of the August transfer window (oh how they must have laughed), the Brazilian has cost Arsenal another £1m in wages, despite a series of dismal performances and his inept failure to oust the player he was designated to replace, Kieran Gibbs.
The rotund Santos, who defends like a bull in a china shop, pined for his former club back in October, but although Fenerbahce are in desperate need of a full back, they declined Arsenal’s loan offer. Instead Santos has agreed to join Brazilian club Gremio, who I can’t imagine are paying a significant amount, if any, of his exorbitant £60k a week wage. The Brazilian league – although growing healthily – is relatively poor compared to the Premier League. Their TV deal last season brought in around £126m, compared to the Premier League’s upcoming £3.018bn deal for 3-year domestic rights.
So, Santos joins Arsenal’s long list of economic calamities. Fabianski, Denilson, Bendtner, Arshavin, Rosicky, Chamakh, Djourou, Squillaci, Ju Young Park, Ryo Miyaichi and Frimpong all remain employed by the club, yet are either stuck out on loan/never play/can’t be got rid of and are theoretically costing Arsenal £2.3m a month (£27.6m per annum) in wages.
Although doubtless a few of those will at least be having a portion of their wages subsidised, the profound stupidity of Wenger’s ‘socialist wage model’ and it’s continual damage to the club’s finances remains glaringly obvious.
One has to wonder for how long Santos will now drain Arsenal of resources considering he must have at least 2½ years left on his current deal and therefore a further £1.8m wage expenditure to satiate. Assuming any club is stupid enough to buy him, and let’s face it there’s no way a waste of space like Santos will take a massive pay cut to move elsewhere, by the time he departs on a free transfer in 2015 he would have cost Arsenal somewhere in the region of £9m, despite only playing about 2 decent games out of 25.
I’ve been quiet the last few weeks, as January only confirmed by deep-seated resentment for the inane practises of monseiur Wenger. There’s been no meaningful games since, and won’t be until Bayern Munich on the 19th February – and with Monreal cup-tied, Gibbs injured and Vermaelen struggling, Arsenal might have to go into that tie with no left-back.
Funny how a little old blog writer like me can successfully predict potential calamities weeks (nay years) in advance, while the man who is paid £7m per annum just trundles zombie-like towards failure, having done nothing to rectify the cavernous holes in his squad.
By the way, here’s an excerpt of what I wrote about Santos before he’d kicked a ball in my post, “Wenger’s desperate trolley dash” – dated 02 Sept 2011.
“More of a wing-back than a left back, Santos definitely seems like a panic buy. Why Santos? Simple. Wenger quickly scoured Europe looking for teams in the shit that might let an international go on the cheap. Fenerbahce fitted the bill perfectly. By all accounts Santos likes to party, is great going forward, but doesn’t particularly like defending. I have my reservations…”
The only thing I got wrong was: he wasn’t cheap.
From Arsenal Truth.
Back in 20, it’s stopped snowing a Fido needs a quick walk.
Then I’ll be back to read your ‘war and peace’ Adam 😉
And Luis Enrique was available at the same price.
Monreal and santos = Baines! Less salary p.w too…
Enrique would of been a good shout too….PL experience etc.

Joey Barton currently having a mega rant on Twitter …. re Paul Gascoigne ……

Tnx Lee razor-toothed piece by AT.
Adam WATH was right, you turned vile…lmaof 😛
SYG hope the wife is entering her recovery. I took control swallowing some anti-oxidants like enriched cranberry and highly concentrated Q10.
What’s this Gaza vs Barton rift?
Barton shouldn’t be playing football and i dread the day he retires and the knobs in talk sport would employ him as a commentator or something like that
Is Coquelin fit? Sure that he can fill in at left-back…
Meade is out for about 2/3 weeks…
Tbh, as much as I like Baines, he’s always struck me as your archtypical northern footballer, who would always prefer to stay up north…
If Arsenal ever moved for him, I think it’s a dot on the card, that he would almost certainly join ManUre or Shitty, even if the finance was the same…
Adam re 4.01
Allardyce would have gone up with your astroid, well aimed or not at Birmingham. He is a brummie by birth and upbringing!? It could have been a triple whammy!
Nice thought, shame t didn’t actually happen.
4.01 Adam.
You should have been an author….. or even a journalist 😉
Luis Enrique for me too Adam… Dippers got him for as cheap as chips didn’t they…
Rico. Thank you. I take that a great compliment coming from a country girl like yourself. 🙂
It was certainly meant that way Adam. I am glad…. 😉
😆 SD, but we know he’d look great alongside Hanson and Linekar…
Jamie Carragher has been signed up by Sky Sports too, I can’t even understand him 😮
Popping off to eat…
Carragher will have to have subtitles…..I suppose they could use Dalglish’s!
Adam, my mate tried this and said it was really good….
http://www.provenderlondon.co.uk/?page_id=18
I can’t even understand him 😮
That’s probably a bonus if he spouts the same crap as those other two Liverpool stalwarts Hanson and Lawrenson
Since I’m relatively new here, I was wondering what happens here when the season is finished and the transfer window isn’t opened yet… If interluls can be so slow I can’t even imagine the off-season!
🙂 Lee and Potter.
Morning all.
Pissing down nere, and is expected to continue for two weeks.
It is a strange country.
Same old Will, I write a load of rubbish and you all log on and talk about something totally different 😛
Will, we battle on 🙂
Full of strange people Scott 😉
I know Rico.
There is always a new plane full of poms arriving 🙂
It’s always good to introduce sanity Scott 😉
Rico, Wills post has given me an idea.
To take the pressure off you, we all must come up with a post for you during the off season….well, the regulars.
I know you’d agree with that idea lol
Touche Rico……
Remember though, the sane ones simply stole a loaf of bread a few hundred years back to come here, now it costs ten grand 🙂
Ha ha Scott…
That’s a lot of money for a bit of sun, sand and a plank of wood that floats…..
“Ten pound poms”
Plenty of sun……well, usually.
Created in 1945 during the government of Ben Chifley as part of the “Populate or Perish” policy by the first Minister for Immigration, Arthur Calwell, the scheme was designed to substantially increase the population of Australia and to supply workers for the country’s booming industries. In return for subsidising the cost of travelling to Australia — adult migrants were charged only ten pound sterling for the fare (hence the name), and children were allowed to travel for free — the Government promised employment prospects, housing and a generally more optimistic lifestyle. However, on arrival, migrants were placed in basic hostels and the expected job opportunities were not always readily available.[2] It was a follow-on to the unofficial Big Brother Movement and attracted over one million migrants from the British Isles between 1945 and 1972, representing the last substantial scheme for preferential migration from the British Isles to Australia.[3] In 1957, more migrants were encouraged to travel following a campaign called ‘Bring out a Briton’. Coming to an end in 1982,[4] the scheme reached its peak in 1969; during this year over 80,000 migrants took advantage of the scheme.[5] The cost to migrants of the assisted passage was increased to £75 in 1973.[2]
While the term “Ten Pound Pom” is in common use, the scheme was not limited to just migrants from the United Kingdom. Persons born in the Irish Free State or in the southern counties of Ireland prior to the establishment of the Republic of Ireland in 1949 were also classified as British subjects.[6] In fact most British subjects were eligible and, at the time, that included not only those from the British Isles but also residents of British colonies such as Malta and Cyprus. Australia also operated schemes to assist selected migrants from other countries, notably the Netherlands (1951), Italy (1951), Greece (1952), West Germany (1952) and Turkey (1967).[7]
Assisted migrants were generally obliged to remain in Australia for two years after arrival, or alternatively refund the cost of their assisted passage. If they chose to travel back to Britain, the cost of the journey was at least £120, a large sum in those days and one that most could not afford.[4] It was also possible for many British persons to migrate to Australia on a non-assisted basis before the early 1970s, although most travelled as Ten Pounders. This was part of the wider White Australia Policy. A quarter of British migrants chose to return to the UK but half of these—the so-called ‘Boomerang Poms’—returned to Australia.[4]
Prior to 1 December 1973, migrants to Australia from Commonwealth countries were eligible to apply for Australian citizenship after one year’s residence in Australia. In 1973 the residence requirement was extended to three years, then reduced to two years in November 1984. However, relatively few British migrants—compared to other postwar arrivals, such as Italians, Greeks and Turks—took up Australian citizenship. Consequently, many lost their Australian resident status later on, usually through leaving Australia.
Cheers Wikipedia! My wife’s uncle was a £10 Pom!
Not many move back once they’ve sampled the life here though…….it is only Arsenal that’s missing 🙂
I’d never heard of a ten pound pom…….
That means little Scott, many who come to England never leave either 😉
😀 DutchGooner10 re 3:05 pm lmfao…
One of my old buddies has not spoken to me since B. Faso beat the good old Ghana. I didn’t even know the Burkina’s played football… lol
Ghana is like England or the Oranges… habitual QF.
On the food, there are a few dishes like that, so it is difficult to tell as it depends on the part of Ghana the person is from. 😀
An acquaintance of mine from your land emailed me today out of the blue about the Malachy predictions. Strangely you crossed my mind then… hehe
On Arsenal, it seems Miguel may get the nod tomorrow as he is not featuring tonight me think.
Evening all… how uncouth..
Did they all arrive in Botany Bay?
Hi Scott, re at 7:43 pm. Hope you are not going to claim you are related to Robin Hood. he he he
DG, on the BFG… him always goes route 1 i.e a dangerous pass to the goalie scares me the most about his play. His pace is an issue but it only affects us maybe 1’s every game so we could live with that if the others around him show some positional awareness.
Manchester21 vs arsenal21 live here: http://nutjob.eu/njtvx1.html
I never knew that manutd dont only get favoured by referees in the epl even in u21. The manure keeper should have gotten a red for foul on akpom.
true Emma. I didn’t realise we were playing the bavarians n ext week. Miguel and Hadrojvic (spelling) seem to have a decent understanding
what is Primorac doing on the bench?
tsGH-They are kicking our players all over the park
Manure are Manure emma… Manure!
love Yennaris ‘Future arsenal DM’
The linesmen look like they have shared a bottle of Johnny Walker during the interval. lol
I am still waiting to spot you on take me out, Emma 😉
Defo Emma, he is Dev’s fave player I think. Flappy is still flapping at the grand old age of 27 and at the u-21 level…
What has happened to Conor Henderson though… he, JET and Frimps were meant to be the future but?
tsGH – 🙂
Flappianski… I guess some people never gain composure
Conor henderson might be one of those that would be let go sooner than later
his contract ends in June so… He was doing very well before he went on loan in september
Agree on Henderson emma. he won’t be alone either imho…
Flappy will be gone in the summer, his contract is up isn’t it. As is Mannone.
Yes. So I guess Martinez and Shea get promoted. The battle of the egos will be too grand for the goalie coach.
Burton seems to have introduced some work ethics into the reserves. Something Banfield struggled with I think during his time.
I’m done for the days folks…..
Night all and have a good one…..
Til tomorrow…..
Miguel has become a very good leader… Nico is also a leader. I think the future looks very promising for us
Night Rico and Emma.
Take care.
tsGH – You are right on Burton, the lads did put in a shift
nighty night rico.
Good night everyone.

I, under normal circumstances, wouldn’t be fussed if Sagna moved on, but under the unusual circumstances that are Arsene Wenger, I’m not sure he would be replaced by a better version.
So, in short, he should stay.
That defensive effort v Sunderland with 10 men, etc to hold out away 0-1 was so, so, so, so refreshing to see.
I see Gazza is in a bit of trouble. The fella almost handed England a 2nd WC in 1990. Good to see Jacky & co are helping out.
And what about the Mansfield Town CEO 😯
I see 99% of the under 40’s Arsenal blog are still whinging about Arsene Wenger. Its funny really, coz what have they got to compare him with, none of them are old enough to know anything else other than him 😆
Where is everyone? Oh! watching the Poms V South Pacific Poms in the hit & giggle cricket
Morning gg9 and all…
They are not doing to well 🙁
Re Sagna GG, the move I was suggesting was to CH, not away from the club 😉
Oh!
I think Sagna is too short to be a permanent fixture @ CH.
There was talk earlier in the season that he may be a wannaway, from The Club.
…….Evening rico
I’d be better if England weren’t getting battered 😉 Can’t wait for the ashes GG9….
Think he was a bit narked that RvP was sold and then Song. Can understand re the Dutchman but Song …. pfff
New Post up…
I spose it goes without saying rico that RvP will get his PL trophy, but if there is any justice in footie world, wouldn’t it be nice if The Arse won the CL. That would fit nicely in the part of RvP where the sun doesn’t shine 😆
Real will knock them out. I just hope The Arsenal can get a result against Bayern.
