Many linked to join, but big sale agreed!!

Morning Gooner’s,

Well are we a selling club aren’t we? It happens almost ever transfer window….

Henry, Cole,  Fabregas,  Nasri, RvP, Song, Clichy, Petit, Vieira, Overmars, Anelka…. the list goes on and on!

As reported by fellow Arsenal Blog LadyArse – It seems the ‘worlds best striker’ Nikki B is soon to join that list:

Arsenal have agreed with five clubs, so now it’s up to me to make a choice.

Like within the next 14 days, when I then go out and travel. They are good clubs where I more or less have talked with the coach at all of them.

Good, now like Ivan, stop talking and start doing! Choose a club and get off of the Arsenal books once and for all.

Sorry, back to Steve’s post…..

Most of those players have gone on to win things at other clubs but as an Arsenal fan through and through, that must stick in your throat as it has mine over the years.

Many Gooners believe that we let these players go because we needed the money and along the way, those sales have earned us the label of being nothing other than a selling club.

I don’t really know if that’s true of course but the more ‘better’ players we sell, the more that label will stick.

Arsene Wenger gets a lot of stick from supporters, unsurprisingly they want to know why we have sold so many players after turning them from ‘unknowns’  when we signed them, to being household names across the world when we sold them.

I was reading about one of our youngsters a little while back and I noticed that when we let him leave, there was something written into his contract which specified that should his new club earn promotion – Arsenal would be awarded £5 million. (Jay Simpson I think)

Thinking about this made the penny drop for me.

If all our players had something similar written into their sell on contracts just imagine how much that much that may have been worth to us over the years. Fabregas for instance a selling price of around £35 million, we all know he has a 50% sell on fee included in his.Van Persie was sold off for around £22 million and suggestion is that he had a a clause written into his contract which earned us a further £1 million after his sale.

Pretty much all of our top players who left have gone on to win either a league title or another trophy, so maybe there is other money due.

If this is how the contracts are written up and I think you can see where I’m going with this, then these ex players are really little gold mines when you think about it. Not only would we get a decent transfer fee, we go on to earn more money a season later.

When I thought a little more about this situation, I began to realise that selling to the clubs around you who appear to have better chances of winning  silverware seems to be the way to go.

Selling Fabregas to Barcelona went against the grain for me but at the end of the day – but the player was adamant that they were the only club he wanted to go to so we were only able to get around £35 mill for him. Van Persie’s transfer probably hurt me the most. We waited eight for him to come good and the moment he did, we sold him to Manchester United, a truly bitter rival it has to be said.

Still, as already said, he earned us more money by helping old Scotch Nose win the PL….

We have to understand that today’s professional football, and footballer is only about money.

We fans are the ones with the passion but they see it as a business and at the end of the day it’s that which keeps the wolves from the doors.

So next time you hear that we intend to sell somebody and to one of our rivals,  think about the profits for the future!!!

I know, I don’t like it either…….

    Morning all…

    Good read Sp..

Those selling days have to be over, especially after IG’s mighty words about who we can afford to sign etc etc…

Gutted Nikki B looks set to leave, wonder if we will get £30m plus for him, the worlds best players cost dear ….. 😉

  2. S2S says:

Good morning to all of you in U.K. and SP.

A nice post with some enlightenment. And the point that stuck me most was Hull are to pay us 5 Million for Jay Simpson whom they have released to after gaining promotion. Can it get any weirder than this?

    Welcome to Arsenal F.C.

  3. Lee says:

    Morning all, good read SP.
This evening the Q&A with Ivan Gazidis will it be even more enlightening or pre-scripted shite?

  4. Wavy says:

I hope there isn’t a penalty clause in Bentner’s contract of a couple of million, viz, when he turns out for his new club they discover he contravenes the trades description act ie he claims to be a footballet, but he isn’t , and they want their money back!?

    Morning all

  5. rico says:

Couldn’t have put that better myself Lee.. You old cynic 😉

Always quite liked Simpson S2S, another who never really got a chance with us…. Will be interesting to see how he does in the PL next season.

  6. S2S says:

    @Rico,

If I am not wrong Hull have released Simpson. You won’t get to see him in PL. I think his last match was between Hull and Cardiff which was a dramatic one.

  7. SD_UK says:

    Hi al
    Hi Rico

This is SD London but I have not been able to submit comments using my SD London username because it keeps taking me to this website : http://en.gravatar.com/ruxwells

Asking to log in which looks suspicious so I refuse to log in.
So I have changed my username to SD_UK which is boring but will take it.

Can you look into this because I am sure I am not the only one with this experience.

  8. rico says:

    Oops, I didn’t know that S2S… thanks.

Hi SD, that happened last year too and creating a wordpress account seemed to get over over it…

  9. EastSidePaul says:

My first thought when I woke up was… “I need to get online and see what developments have happened over night!”
So I got up ambled sleepily over to my laptop and once I sat down I said to myself “What am I doing… this is not how living is done.”
Getting up, checking NewsNow every 20 minutes to see if someone has the inside scoop on who will more than likely not be joining. I’ve been like a man possessed over the last few days with all the gossip of returning home, Wenger in Paris and release clauses being meet!

I gotta take a large step back and get off the internet for my own good! All this free time after finishing up in Uni could be spent a tad more productively!

So i’ll catch up again with everyone sometime into the transfer window to see how everything is going.

    Later everyone!

  10. S2S says:

Don’t you love ‘Special one’? First he gets Modric for real reportedly for 35M and rejects Santi and Nacho combined at 25M and when he leaves he wants to take Luca for cut prices.

And people complain about Arsene buys.lol

  11. rico says:

Wonder if Ronaldo would join him…

Take it steady Esp and catch you in a few days after Rooney and Lewandowski have signed 😉

Or just catch you 2nd Sept for DD….

    Enjoy your summer….

  12. Kosta says:

Nice post SP if Mr Gazidis is right we are a chance for a trophy this season but if he is wrong……… we may turn into the next Liverpool and the clubs history will go down the toilet. But if we are to spend this summer I suggest we hunt down Higuain fabregas and adil rami from the get go, any left over cash should go toward youngsters. If the Higuain deal is not to happen then maybe Demba Ba is worth looking into he is only worth around 5-7 mill and if on song is one of the best in the prem.

  13. George says:

    Morning all,

    Good post.

Re: Jay Simpson, once we shift those journeymen park, shisha and pinkboots , i’d have him back personally. He weren’t that bad actually.

  14. Wavy says:

Wasn’t the “special one” some kind of anti-constipation breakfast cereal?
He sure is full of shit!

  15. S2S says:

Btw, Rico no word on Rafa? He’s the best Spanish athlete of his generation. For me he’s ahead of both Xavi and Iniesta.

Rafa to French open is what Pete was for Wimbledon and what my love Steffi Graph was to all grand slams. I still so love her.

  16. Adam says:

Morning Rico and all. I feel that the need for Usmanov to take over at Arsenal grows by the hour, day and week etc. We are still walling around, no doubt caught in several negotiations where gunslinger Wenger is trying to shave a few quid off here and there. What will happen is that other clubs will take those players by paying the money. It has happened before more times than I can remember. Surely Jabba would instruct his man, whoever that might be, to go and buy the player and do it now. It’s about time Arsenal started setting the agenda, like they do when it’s time to get the ST money in.
Q & A? Please. Gazidis will sit there, indulge in no-speak and say that he can’t and won’t discuss individual players.

  17. rico says:

    What Benitez S2S 😉

Morning Adam. The more we hear from IG, the less I think that will ever happen…

Words are grand, but actions speak louder eh…..

  18. SD_UK says:

    Good post.

Don’t you find it intriguing that nobody seems to be after our players this season, not even a simple rumour.

Then it made me think that , was AFC, board and Wenger actually send word out to other clubs or agents that hey guys, RVP , Fabregas, Clichy , Toure, Song are available if you want to buy ?

Because going by Bendtner’s comments, he said Arsenal has agreed with five clubs that he will have to chose one.(Lets take Bendtner word for it right now)

5 clubs, did Arsenal make a classified ADD in the European Football Clubs Association Gazett ?(made that up) tha hey who wants to buy Bendtner ?

Have they been doing that over the years because how did Barcelona know that Song was available because kid you not , we did not even fight to retain him so he must have been available and Barcelona knew some how.

  19. Adam says:

I read somewhere that Gazidis is thoroughly pissed off that Arsenal fans think he is little more than an idiotic talking puppet, wheeled out to take the flak. His rather grand speech last week has really ramped up the pressure on Arsene who might be more than happy to see it backfire on Ivan.

  20. SD_UK says:

but you feel there was no real backing to the rumours because one, nobody has mentioned that they like Verminator as a defender.

When Walcott didn’t sign Chelsea or Man shity didn’t say they would like him if he is available.Paper rumored that he might go to Liverpool but nobody in Liverpool said anything.

Koscielny, Wenger is not even commenting and Guadiola has not said hey I admire him as a player but we have other players here ; just to suggest he was looking at him at some point.

We all knew that RVP was leaving it was only where that we didn’t know and he ended up breaking our hearts(had to chip that in)

I hope you get my point that those rumours above are not even worth considering.

  21. sube says:

Its the same thing in every transfer window. We are linked with Ronaldinho and we get Chamakh…or ….no one at all.
Can’t believe people fall for such rubbish talk every time.
While our rival fans celebrate their clubs signing players we celebrate players getting linked to our club!

  22. Jay says:

Lets not panic yet ,there hasnt been much movement in the transfer market just yet. There will be the usual merry go round soon, just hope that we are on the ride.

  23. Kosta says:

That is another option Rico he would fit perfectly into our gameplan and he could well become the world class striker us fanatics are vying for. He could easily feed off of carzola and wilshire’defence cutting passes and has proven he is lethal in from tog goal.

  24. rico says:

sube, do you think anyone has honestly fallen for IG’s words?

I live in hope that he is truthing, but…..

  25. SD_UK says:

I think most of the players are on holidays therefore not ready to talk about transfers at the moment.

Which is not a good thing for us because when they are back , their WAGs would have emptied their pockets therefore they will definitely be in the business mode and ready to take advantage and get the best out of any transfer move

  26. Kosta says:

Another suggestion would be to attempt to purchase Mario mandzukic if bayern are to get dowski as he is as lethal as the pole if not more prolific. Top scoring for bayern this past season. And what about Huntelaar?? He is also more than capable of finding the back of the net and has shown that this season.

  27. Lee says:

Dortmund have said they won’t sell Lewandowski to their bitter rivals Bayern, wonder if they will buckle like AFC?!?!?

  28. proffetic says:

Good luck to the audience tonight. When I watched previous meetings.Mr G never stops talking. Tells the gathering that we are doing things the “Arsenal way” so it has to be O.K. doesn’t it? By the time he has nearly finished the floor is littered with crumpled paper and the audience have chosen not to continue all efforts to sustain life. Mr G catches his own reflection from his shiny suit and thanks his converted following who respond with exaggerated applause borne out of pure relief…

  29. rico says:

    🙂 Lee..

Kosta, there are many options out the, AW/IG just need to make sure they get the right ones…

Bet they buckle, how can Dortmund afford to lose out on so much money? They are more tight than Arsenal….

  30. Adam says:

Huntelaar is the day before yesterday’s news surely. We have to be aiming a lot, lot higher than him.

  31. rico says:

    I thought you were Lee …. 😉

Off out with Fido before the rain comes…. Back in an hour or so…

  32. George says:

Darren Bent on a freebie anyone??

Sell TV5, Sagnza, Gerv. Release deadwood ie Denilson way at a loss(no one will buy that Sh1t), and roll on same as last year, scrape for 3rd/4th.

Until Jabba overthrows Walmart, its pretty much bargain basement shopping again

  33. frednerk says:

    Morning All,
    Hi Steve,
It’s official we are not a selling club anymore,
    well not to the mancs..anyway.

Your right…….arsenal is a business..one of the best.

    It reminds me…
when arsenal applied for the loan to build the new stadium,
the banks insisted we invested in the player’s.
    Don’t know about you..
but I thought we were about to sign new players,
Instead the club/wenger decided to give everyone a,
    pay rise.

  34. SD_UK says:

Sometimes I am proud of the way Arsenal did their business and even Alan Sugar (The Apprentice) who is a stounch Spuds fan admired the way Arsenal runs the club.

But damn we should have won at least 2 Carling Cups , probably the last one if our players had woken up before the got beaten.

  35. devilgunner says:

  36. Scott from Oz says:

    Morning all.
    Nothing new happening, i see.
Bloody transfer season…..and it hasn’t even kicked in officially yet 🙂

  37. Lee says:

Yeah Scott, the journos are fucked all they keep doing is re-hashing their negative AFC stories…..all bloody tedious tbh!

  38. Lee says:

I’ve still got a feeling that we will be happy when the transfers arrive….. like buses they’ll be three at once!

  39. tsgh says:

    After all,

    Another good post SP1…

Last night Ginter showed his class and versatility for the German u-21’s as a CB for most of the match against Spain. Spain only scored after Ginter was pushed to CDM and Leno conceded a poor goal on his near post..

A lot of people rate Tello of Barca, but to meTello must watch Gervinho a lot…. his end products are dire… I guess he is young 😉

So where is the Higuain deal going to be announced?

  40. SD_UK says:

Carzola scored for Spain by the way and Fabregas as well who know both might be playing for us next season then the PL league will e shaking in the knees:D

  41. Raz says:

Morning. If looking at English player, can buy rooney as supporting striker to walcott.(main striker) put santi on the left and ox on the right. Cm will be wanyama and jack. Ramsey rotation. Buy ashley williams to compete with defenders. Laurent on the right will suit ok. Play 4-4-2.

Alternatively serious contenders will be higuan up front with walcott. Giroud and posolski rotation. Cm will be as above but get nicholas gaitan from benefica to rotate with ox and play right mid. Defenders get matt hummels. Gd catch too. Keeper no problem only lack consistent. Can get better.

Loan or sell the rest like gervinho etc..!

  42. Lee says:

So what would your question be to Ivan tonight?
    When’s Diaby back?
    Like a new signing….
Where’s the world class players we crave?
Have you eaten fish and chips at the Emirates?
    Answers on a postcard please….

  43. rico says:

When is Stan going to sell his shares to Jabba…???

    That’s my question Lee..

What time are you all off out, have a great evening….

  44. tsgh says:

    Spain struggling against Tahiti…??

Its funny how Abu Dhabi is considered dead wood by sections of fansd but the ‘Le Blue Cockerels’ cant seem to win a match without him in the line-up…

  45. Lee says:

The bleacher report is saying “Gunners Must Take Over Race for Toby Alderweireld!”…….as long as Dennis Irwinkle and Stewart Hobson think it’s ok! Wankers.

  46. Lee says:

Diaby, back running within a month…..get fit just in time to sell him! Or will he be like a new signing???

  47. rico says:

    Hi Ak..

😆 Lee – look out for the The Daily Mail in Rocky’s pocket, he loves that paper 😉

  48. rico says:

Welcome Raz, sorry for the delay in letting you out of moderation, hope you come back and join in…

  49. Lee says:

He loves that Daily Fail…..although they ran an article saying Ebeneezer Wenger was going to smash our transfer record three times!!! Fingers crossed!

  50. potter says:

tsgh : – It’s purely his fragility that has turned people off. It’s not his fault but you can’t keep throwing money into the street . I remember the audible deep intake of breath last year every time RVP went down . With Diaby it comes when he steps off the team bus.

  51. allezkev says:

    Ah the Daily Mail…
    That is an interesting read.

But I must recommend Hi-Fi Weekly.

It has a facinating piece on Woofers and Tweeters this week.

Evening all, thanks for your comments, and thank you Rico as usual.:) What’s the latest who have we brought and who have we moved on.

  53. rico says:

Oh dear Ak, not again 😉

Hi Sp, my pleasure and no, everything is just as it was yesterday, the day before and ……..

  54. stevepalmer1 says:

Does that mean at this particular moment we still have all that £70 mill still sitting making profit then Ricolicious.

  55. devilgunner says:

    Good evening Lady and Gentlemen

This made my brow full of sweat………

…………Nicklas Bendtner has revealed that he expects to leave Arsenal within the next two weeks.

A week is bloody long time in football. How are we going to face two more weeks of this?

It makes me sweat with fear.

  56. tsgh says:

    Hi Rico,

I meant Haiti… who are even a worse team that Tahiti who managed to qualify for the Confederation Cup.

re 5:21… its the senior team with the likes of Cesc and SC19… both scored as previously stated above. Spains XI were: Casillas; Azpilicueta, Albiol, Ramos, Monreal; Cazorla, Javi Martinez, Fabregas; Navas, Torres, Mata

  57. rico says:

Evening Devil, I’ll believe he’s gone when he’s gone, until then, he’s all b****x……

    Ah, I see Ts..

  58. tsgh says:

😀 Potter… I am told insurance companies will not consider insuring Abu Dhabi’s just in he pulls a ligament whilst sneezing…

  59. tsgh says:

So how was Mauren-hoes press conference today…? I bet all the idiotic sports writers were creaming like goonie watching Gerv score a goal…

  60. tsgh says:

I hope he is well though… He will be here when the first major signing is announced…

  63. rico says:

Ivan “we have an owner with vast experience in sports, and some of our commercial deals has been down to his knowledge”

Really, is he having a laugh???

  68. tsgh says:

ha ha ha Rico… so no one is qualified to negotiate purchases… or as DD said last week, our scouts are busy watching youtube compilations…lol

  69. rico says:

Joking aside Ts, AW shouldn’t be negotiating transfers, he should be on holiday. He should have already done the ground work and left a list of those he would like us to try and sign with IG.

    Well, that’s how I thought clubs run….

  70. tsgh says:

Exactly Rico, but comments such as ‘we are chasing the very best’ fills me with no confidence at all… especially when DD also said AW and AFC can only sign who is available… paraphrase of course

  71. Scott from Oz says:

  72. Scott from Oz says:

Ivan Gazidis Q&A Review: “There’s No Better Person Than Arsene To Manage Arsenal”
Posted on June 11, 2013 by Phil

This evening was the annual Q&A with Ivan Gazidis and members of various fan groups and small shareholders. There will be many blog posts about this – quite a few were on laptops during the event – not to mention the tweeting. Personally I was writing notes on paper, tweeting and listening to @DarrenArsenal1 tutting next to me at the same time, with occasional outbursts of indignation from Pedro of @LeGrove in the row behind me. It was a sensory overload.

Here’s my summary anyway. There is some paraphrasing.

As last year we had a short film of season’s highlights (no comment), followed by a personal video message from Arsène, who loves every one of us and values our support (translation: he’ll be signing a new contract).

Ivan’s intro was also shorter than last time, as he attempted to head off criticism of him using all the allocated time before a question was asked. He also said “I’ve been told to keep my answers short,” at which point Darren applauded and several of us laughed.

IG stressed that AW has “seen us through what could have been a very difficult period”; “We (the Board) don’t believe there is anyone better than AW for his role”; talk about a new contract for the manager “will be done quietly”.

After just a few minutes we were into the questions, firstly from shareholders.

Q1 – Since you have been employed here Ivan, our first team has turned into a second rate team. Will super quality players want to join us? What evidence is there of us being able to make super signings these days?

IG: “We haven’t got better or worse in the last few years we have held steady.”

Well, we’ve managed to cling onto top four, but I think most would agree we’ve got a bit worse. Ivan continued his answer with comparisons to Bayern as our turnover increases. To be fair, there was no direct way of answering the question unless he was going to bring Wayne Rooney out from behind a curtain.

Q2 – Why did we ‘hand the title to United’ by selling them RvP?

IG: “There were no good choices in that situation. It hurts everyone, me included, to see him score for Man U. It is possible to hold players to contracts, but they all react differently, some you can do it with, some you can’t. Now we need to look forward.”

Question dodged really. Personally I don’t blame RvP for going to Utd, though his statements rankle. But why Utd? Sell him abroad or keep him a year.

The questioner seemed to think it was all about money with RvP, so why not incentivise him with £10m to get to a cup final? Ivan disagreed that it was all about money.

Q3 – Can you guarantee AW will spend big this year?

IG: “AW isn’t scared to spend money, but it’s up to him to get the players he believes in. AW has done a very good job with this overall. He wants a cohesive squad that he believes in.”

So basically IG can’t guarantee anything about spend, because it’s AW’s job. Which anyone who listens to anything I say would know already.

Q4 – You’ve previously said the wage structure needs attending to, but AW has come out this year talking about how he likes the ‘socialist’ model – are you doing anything about it or not?

IG: “Where we start with every player is an assessment of talent. AW makes decisions on talent. Once he identifies talent he wants then we talk wages. The right decisions on wages follow the talent assessment.”

To translate: In my years here I have not managed to wrest an ounce of control of team spending from Arsène. He does what the hell he likes and will continue to do so, whether anyone agrees with it or not.

Q5 – Why can’t we seem to do any major business early in the transfer window?

IG: “We strive to do business early, but have a disadvantage compared to the clubs with basically unlimited funding. There is less uncertainty this year on funds we have available. With several top clubs changing managers it’s unclear how transfer business will go, and also most clubs are taking FFP into account, and the effect of that is unknown.”

Again, what else can he really say? He’s waiting for AW to make a decision.

Follow up: Do we need to wait to ensure we are in the CL group stages?

IG: “No – no player has made that a condition.”

But he avoided the club angle here: is the club prepared to spend before it confirms the CL place?

Q6 – How long will it be before FFP takes effect?

IG: “The wage cap is already in place (wages can only go up in line with commercials). We are okay because our commercials are increasing and can cover wage rises.”

Q7 – What is your role, and that of Stan Kroenke and Dick Law?

IG: “I’ve been asked this question rather less politely! I am responsible for everything off-field, including developing revenue streams, the reputation of the club, supporting the manager however he needs it. SK as an owner is mindful of not treating the club as an extension of his ego, is respectful of tradition. Some of our commercial successes have been as a result of SK’s vision. Dick Law has decades of experience in professional football. He speaks five languages and continually flies round the world negotiating deals. The division of responsibilities is very clear: AW is in charge of everything on the field, but we help with analysis of what he needs.”

Everything you would expect him to say, plus Stan is apparently helping us win commercial deals! Is he? What exactly is he doing then?

Q8 – Some fans turned against you and AW mid-season; how does that affect you?

You have to ask if this question is for real. Darren next to me nearly fell of his chair, and the explosion of air from Pedro behind nearly blew me onto the stage.

IG: “We all give everything we have to put this club at the top of world football. All our time and energy goes into it. We all get frustrated with losses, and angry – particularly matches like Bradford and Blackburn. We are building a football club to compete at the top of the game.”

I think this answer went on a fair bit longer without telling us anything useful.

Q9 – Do you and will you actively support initiatives to help away fans and stop them getting ripped off?

IG: “We’ll do all we can, in conjunction with other clubs, though this isn’t easy to resolve.”

In other words, “I can’t promise anything”.
