Mahrez an Arsenal bench warmer? Arsenal going big with double swoop?

Morning all.

So the big news yesterday, well, the big rumour yesterday was all about Riyad Mahrez and how Arsenal are hoping to sign him this summer. Leicester boss Ranieri has said his player is going nowhere and in any case, if he moved to North London, he might find himself on the bench. I totally disagree. Yes he may get rotated and rested but if by some miracle we sign the winger, he’d be one of the first names on the team-sheet on a match day.

Personally, I’d love Arsene Wenger to sign him and if he scores as many as he did last season whilst playing on the wing, our attacking unit will be greatly improved.

There’s stuff in the back pages this morning which suggests Mahrez is not the only player Wenger wants as Alexandre Lacazette could be part of a swift double swoop over the next few days. Hang on, Arsenal don’t do swift do they…..

If it’s true though and we do get both players in, would you all be pretty happy with our forward line?

Matthias Ginter is the defender Arsene Wenger allegedly wants but Dortmund have said he’s not for sale at any cost.

In other transfer news, David Ospina is rumoured to have submitted a transfer request which could mean Arsenal would have to find another keeper to deputise for Petr Cech. Maybe Szczesny will be the guy, maybe Martinez is ready to step up. Matt Macey is another option – who knows, the joys of a transfer window eh….

Pull your shirt out Arsene!!
Pull your shirt out Arsene!!

He’s aged hasn’t he and he certainly looks a worried man in the above picture. Perhaps that’s because Mourinho is back and will no doubt try to ridicule him the more the season goes on, especially if Arsenal have a bad start to the season. Maybe he isn’t looking forward to coming up against Pep and Conte, or Klopp on the opening day of the new campaign or could it be he’s just worrying about spending a bit more money this summer…..

It’s hard to believe that new new season kicks off in just three weeks time and we’ll be without Koscielny, Giroud, Ozil, Alexis and probably Ramsey. Where will our goals come from and who will be in defence in front of Petr Cech?

If the match against Lens is anything to go by, Akpom and Walcott aren’t going to get many goals between them but if young Chuba had better service, it might be a great help! But then we said that last season too about the service our striker (s) get and it’s all too often quite poor. We have a big guy who can use his head but we have no-one to find him with a cross apart from Ozil at times and instead of whipping the ball into the box, it’s pass pass pass. That won’t help anyone this season if that style of play is to be repeated, certainly not Akpom. That’s if he’s still at the club when the season kicks off which is looking likely..

As for Walcott, there’s no point in playing the ball to his feet as once he’s got it, he doesn’t know what to do with it. If he’s still here come September the 1st, he needs the ball playing in front of him so he can use his pace and then hope by some miracle he’s got his shooting boots on….

Still, if Arsene snaps up Mahrez, Walcott could very well be on his bike…..

I won’t even mention Sanogo.

Enjoy your Sunday guys and gals….

    Nothing…………….. yawn yawn yawn………….!

We all know the media circus Rico, stories are merely that until a bloke has signed the contract and the ink is dry, mostly all this stuff is about the agent purely looking for a decent pay rise for his client which as we know boosts his own pocket.

  2. Wath says:

When you look at where we fell short last season Rico so far only Xhaka makes the midfield stronger but the problems exist at centre half with a lack of pace and top quality. We all know the scoring issues as well and yep for me there are a few that need to be shown the door who are merely stealing a living..!

  3. rico says:

Agree again Wath, I’m surprised it’s taking the club so long to get the issues sorted. Perhaps a few exits will take place once he’s signed the players he needs….

  4. scottfromoz says:

A top class DM and the pressure is off the backs, IMO.
When Coquelin was on song, we hardly looked like getting broken down.
Xhaka is superb, and will instantly make our backs better.
Get us a WC striker and winger…..watch us go.

  5. Canadian Gooner says:

Good Morning to The Lady of the House and all fellow Gooners in residence.

Rico – May I have a croissant with my coffee please.

There is no sense in selling players, unless you’re offered a very good fee, until you have someone to take their place. the team is thin enough as it is.

As for Ospina, maybe that is why Szczesny’s nearly signed, sealed and delivered deal has fallen apart or maybe Roma are just trying to get him on the cheap. They obviously don’t know Arsene very well.

  6. Le Coq Monster says:

    Thanks Rico.

I should copy and paste this all the time………………………unless it`s on Ornstein then it`s rubbish, always look on Orstein before even Arsenal.com !

I have this theory on the method of how our transfer dealings are thought out !………………….it`s a meeting at Stans £501M ranch where the inner sanctum 4 of……….. Wenger, Kroenke, Gazidis and Dick Law discuss players whilst they are naked and masturbating over a pole dancing duck !……………..they call it the……………Four Spunk Duck Technique !……………………….please remove if that was to near the mark !…………but !…………Wenger is in his own words……”very very active !”……………so there`s no ducking the issue !……….well, there is a duck in the issue if you know what I mean !. 😀

  7. rico says:

Morning Cg. You may, with jam?

I’m not convinced Szczesny would stick around to play second fiddle to Cech, not after having been our number one for a while.

  8. rico says:

Hi Scott. I guess it depends on what happens with both Chambers and Holding, if one or both go out on loan, we’ll certainly need another CB..

  9. Canadian Gooner says:

Le Coq – You have a very perverse and vivid imagination. Learn to lie with a straight face and you could be a journo. Any truth in your articles would be strictly accidental or a gross oversight.

  10. rico says:

Arsenal have agreed to extend Wojciech Szczesny’s Roma loan for another year, according to Sky in Italy and Il Tempo.

The goalkeeper spent last season in Rome on loan and the club have been trying to negotiate another deal over the summer.

  11. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – A little Seville marmalade please.

As for Szczesny, where would he go if his beloved Roma aren’t willing to pay a pittance for him. They have already bought another goalie. Even if they do finally sign him he will still have to compete for his position.

  12. Wath says:

As the Lens game pointed out Scott, a simple hoof down the middle and we get caught out, a def mid won’t stop that less he’s gonna play so deep he becomes a centre half..! The obvious lack of pace with our centre backs is a huge problem and needs to be addressed or they need to wise up to it as well which v Lens they didn’t. If Lens can create problems with a hoof ball then we bang in trouble.

  13. Le Coq Monster says:

Thanks CG……………I`ll take that as a compliment……………..obviously I say that with a straight face !.

  14. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – That is part of the torture of the transfer window; one source says says black, another says white and yet another says gray.

Higuain is coming to Arsenal, Higuain has already had a ‘secret medical’ with Juve, Mahrez is coming to Arsenal, Mahrez is staying put with Leicester, etc. ad nauseam. Bring on September and the new season. This annual Chinese water torture or death by a thousand cuts (journo/ITK lies) is too too much. In any trade or profession with the performance rating of commercial sports journalism, if you can call it that, you would be dismissed and your certification revoked.

  15. Canadian Gooner says:

Le Coq – Keep it up, we Arsenal supporters need all the laughs we can get in these trying times. A little comic relief is greatly appreciated.

  16. Le Coq Monster says:

Anyone see that Lens player Ba ?……………..commentator kept sayoing how big a unit he was and how Walcott couldn`t get around him !, but I thought this was an injustice to Ba as he may have been a big unit, but he was fcuking fast as well………….or maybe Walcott has lost a bit of speed !……………………if only Mertsnailer was as fast as Ba !……….he`d probably got a 100 caps for Germany !.

  17. rico says:

I know CG, which is exactly why I dismiss so much of the stuff written, it’s just journo’s trying to get glory headlines…

But I suspect Higuain is heading to Juve as they spend a huge chunk of the money the Glazers will give them for Pogba…. lol

  18. ScottfromOz says:

    Wath, Kozzer wasn’t there.
Is still take a CB for sure, but I still think we will be more solid at the back simply by signing Xhaka.

  19. Canadian Gooner says:

I can’t see Arsene keeping Chambers and Holding in the first team. One of them, but not but not both, has to go out on loan, unless Arsene does sign another experienced CB (Ginter, Koulibaly?).

Arsene needs to decide which position Chambers is going to play and get him some regular playing time in that position as needs to rebuild his confidence. If that requires a loan for the season, so be it.

  20. Wath says:

So what if Kozzer is out for 3/4 months… a defence ain’t built on one player mate, our lack of pace and nous to deal with it against a 2nd rate side shows we not sorted it out and as said easy to bypass a midfield with hoof ball..!

  21. Canadian Gooner says:

Scott – Yes, but if Gabriel, Chambers or Holding can’t start to step up to partner Koscielny this season we will need a replacement for the BFG. He is becoming a liability.

  22. ScottfromOz says:

Wath, if the guys up the pitch put in a shift, it doesn’t matter.
When we are at our worst is when the forwards and midfielders do little defensive work-it exposes our backs.
When they work up the pitch, we are solid.

  23. Le Coq Monster says:

Rico……….I reckon a traffic cone could tackle Theo and do a defence splitting pass !.

  24. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – You may well be right about Higuain to Juve, but Napoli will be loathe to sell him to their biggest rival. However, if so, Napoli will squeeze almost all of the Pogba fees out of them first. Pity?

  25. Canadian Gooner says:

Le Coq – Is that a fast traffic cone or is its bright colour going to dazzle Theo into losing the ball?

  26. Wath says:

Scott, the midfield can do all it wants and the strikers, you cannot stop a team hoofing from the back and that’s my point, a simple hoof ball catches us out hence the deficiencies at centre back need to be sorted pronto..!

  27. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – I thought that was Euros. We’ll just have to wait to see if one of the teams confirm the figure.

Strange and comical to think that Sir Anal let him leave ManUre on a free four(?) years ago and now they are buying him back for a world record fee. He better work out or Maureen will become the Gullible One. I see Paul Scholes being quoted as saying Pogba isn’t worth that high a fee. He should know as he did play with him in his first stint at ManUre.

  28. Canadian Gooner says:

Rico – It’s past dawn and obviously time for me to go to bed. So it is Good Afternoon to most of you (Good Morning? Scott) and Good Night from me.

  29. Obi says:

Hi All: I have no doubt that we will get a positive result against Pool on opening day even with a limited squad. And there in lies the problem because if AW don’t strengthen before that he will not, which will be a big mistake. Btw I watched Maherez is some games were he was horrid, such as against us and that is with LC playing to his strength.

  30. rico says:

    Per Mertesacker:

“The way last season went, we were quite lucky to finish second,” the 31-year-old told The Sun. “We turned things around at the end but it was kind of a miracle we finished runners-up.

‘A lot of transfer business has already been done and it won’t be easy for us this time, especially with all the signings going to the other clubs.’

Spot on Merts, now go and tell Le Stubborn one!!

  31. Obi says:

Rico, I guess Per is not going to be around? Don’t he know AW by now…lol. Holding on the clock.

  32. frednerk says:

    Reading between the lines
    The pressure on The Arsenal
    to make another big signing
    has now got me thinking.
    Mahrez…will he..won’t he?
    Draxler…Lined up just in case?

It looks like a striker is not happening
    width maybe what wenger wants.

  33. ScottfromOz says:

    Morning Rico,
Both parties are better off then.
Who will we spend the cash on???
    Bank interest 🙂

  34. Hell Raising Devil says:

why didnt they do an U21 Emirates cup then??? They could have assembled an u21 team and invited 3 other teams like for ex PSG, Bayern, Juventus.

It would have been good for the youngsters and also for the coaches. And the fans would have had the chance to watch the young ones

  35. Wavy says:

I think they cancelled the Emirates Cup because they didn’t want to start the season with a series of defeats!

Morning all. Devil I was once a lovely hunky, sadly I’m I’m not really either, any longer! But my memories, oh, my memories!

  36. Hell Raising Devil says:

Wavy, your body may not be anymore, but your soul will remain like that.

I still think its wrong not to have played the Ems cup. Even at U21 level it would have attracted a good crowd. And many clubs would have jumped at the chance to participate.

  37. Rick says:

    Morning Rico and the House.
The Emirates Cup was cancelled because the pitch had a major overhaul after the end of the season. The new Turf was laid about 10 days ago and they don’t want any games on it until the start of the season.
    see you latta

  38. potter says:

I wonder if the texture of the pitch is being changed ? Less muscle pulls and ankle turns perhaps if the nylon support strands are removed.

  39. Obi says:

    Hi All:
The Ems cup was cancelled because of the US tour, it requires more dates, that what I read. So because of that they laid the new turf.

  40. Le Coq Monster says:

    Morning all.

Never to old to be a hunk !……………………I may talk some extreme crap, but the 1000+ sit ups and 3X5 min planks every day are true and have a six pack at 60 !……..it takes in all about 40 mins and unless you`re all bedridden or in real bad health then it`s easy once you get used to it, it will hurt at first, but honestly, your body will soon find it easy !…………right, anything else I say is the usual crap ! 😆

  41. Le Coq Monster says:

PS…………………….obviously, you will to have a controlled diet !……….otherwise the six pack will just be lurking under the fat !. hahaha

  42. Le Coq Monster says:

Not quite Rico, basically eight different ab exercises done three times, plus I do leg raises with weights around my ankles which is another 120 on top………………..then there`s the chin ups of over 100, then there`s the hyper extention for lower back….normal weight training……………….4 runs per week and 5 a side on thursday night !…………………it could be said I`m a fit fcuker !………………my daughter is sports scientist and shakes her head at me ! hahaha

  43. Hell Raising Devil says:

Well done Le Coq. I admire people like you mate. Keep on going Hunky fella.

I am with Scott with regards big Sam. I think that he will be the coach that England is in need of right now. He will kick a few arses in the England camp…….and will teach the English team how to whack a team like those Spanish kunts.

  44. Hell Raising Devil says:

I can guarantee you that teams like Germany, Spain, France, Brazil Belgium etc will not relish coming up against Big Sam’s team especially if the team plays a Bolton style football in their faces.

Only Italy will not be fazed as they play a similar style.

Expect feisty games with some big results

  45. Hell Raising Devil says:

planking is a great way to get a great body LeCoq. But I hate situps. And push ups. Give me jogging, running and walking plus weight lift reps any day.

Oh….and at 48 years I still do the ladder agility exercises.

Wait till you see KEv…….he has got awesome biceps and triceps……he does around 10k circular movements a day with the steering wheel of his cab. 5K with the right and 5K with the left.

  46. Le Coq Monster says:

hahaha Next time your passing in Cornwall, pop in and the gyms free to HHers !.

It`s probably why I have no time for lazy footballers…..Arshavin types… as they are young and should be able to run all day and with the sports science, fatigue should not be an excuse !…………………..why the spuds can run further than us is down to harder training !………..teams who work harder with less skilfull players are makingg it a level game, get the best players to work harder and you have got it spot on………success will follow imo !.

  47. Le Coq Monster says:

Funny you should say that Devill………………….remember all the long distance lorry driver years ago before they had power steering etc`……..the had enormous biceps !.

I started off only doing one chin up, but your body get used to it and I do 3 different variety`s of it……..it gets easier believe me !………soon you will be Hell Raising Hunk Devil 😀

  48. Hell Raising Devil says:

Aye Scott. I agree. I feel that many will have to up their game ….. knowing fully well that Sam has an extensive knowledge of which type of player he wants for a particular position. And Sam will not be fazed to put on a player with few to no experience at international level if he gets him playing with commitment and within his limits.

Many often comment on how England need the Butcher/Adams type of British bulldog mentality. Well they got one….in the shape of the manager.

Yes, we used to loathe him and dreaded playing his Bolton team. But be honest….who would you prefer beside you in a trench….him or Mourinho???

    I would go for Sam

  49. rico says:

I’m with you there Lc. Lazy players frustrate the heck out of me, especially when you know they have so much talent…

  50. Le Coq Monster says:

We have a 73 year old at our running club who does 7 minute miles over a 10 mile distance………………….10 miles in 70mins !………………and footballers think they are doing too much if they do 12K in a match of 90 mins plus 5 mins+ injury time !………………………..no way does Merts do even 10K………..I`d be gobsmacked if any central defender did that………………and as for the Goalie !……………………………….

  51. Le Coq Monster says:

No excuse whatsoever Rico for not putting in the hard graft !…………..like Devil says and love him or hate him…….Ronaldo is a truly dedicated footballer !…………………………..loved Geordie Armstrong……….perpetual motion !.

  52. Hell Raising Devil says:

During one of England games at the Euro I went on the treadmill did a fartlek of walking, jogging and running, from the first whistle till the the game ended. I stopped at half time as well. And when the game finished I found that I did 14km 600mtr.

No England player exceeded 10K that day.

  53. Le Coq Monster says:

There is probably stats somewhere but take the goalie out and the 2 CBs, maybe the DM and you are left with others who may do a bit of milege ………..probably the B2B and wing backs do the most running……..only an opinion though !………………….who`s the HH stat person ?

  54. Le Coq Monster says:

Nice one Dev`…………….you nearly did in one game what Merts ( according to Rico) does in ten years !. 😀

  55. Hell Raising Devil says:

Gabriel is mean and determined Rico. He has an aggressive streak in him. Put him in with a tactical coach and we will be raving about him.

Alexis puts in a shift yes Rico. But he does it for himself not for the team. He does not have a charisma which coaxes that extra 10% from the team.

  56. Hell Raising Devil says:

Aaron did well in the Euro Scott…..because his coach built the team around him and Bale. So its obvious he works his socks off

Put Aaron in the hole and rotate him with Ozil…..and you will be seeing a different animal

  57. Rick says:

    Afternoon all.
Team on it’s way to the us of a minus Merts knee injury and Gabby Tonsillitis.

Now we will see how good Chambers Holding and Bielick are

  58. Rick says:

Any of you fitness fanatics on here today applying for the post the Club are advertising.
Its as follows Academy Strength and conditioning Coach ( U9-U16) with Arsenal FC.

Having seen the Job Description the Education Qualifications and the Abilities required its not a young mans job Lol

  59. allezkev says:

Hey, afternoon all you lovely people… ?

Afternoon Rico, it’s another warm day, the perfect weather to be out in the garden doing sit-ups, press-ups, star jumps and all sorts of interesting, muscle pulling exercises…

I’ve actually just returned home from cycling to Brighton and back and I feel fantastic…

Adam was going to join me, but he had a pressing engagement that he couldn’t get out of…

Well, how’s things in the wonderful world of scintillating Arsenal transfers?

Ok, nothing as usual, so back to the cricket.
Ben Stokes is a bit of a worry Rico, I’ve heard that he’ll be doubtful for the next Test…

  60. Rick says:

Kev has Ginge got a BSc Degree in Sports Science or Strength and Conditioning or equivalent as this is a basic requirment.
Have you ginge come on give it a go LOL

  61. Wath says:

Rick, I was most upset they not looking for an “assistant to assist assistant manager” I was most happy to throw my hat in the ring to help out Bouldy and possibly effect a coup and kick out le stubborn… Alas…!

  62. Le Coq Monster says:

My daughter has a BSc in Sports Science from Exeter University and I take her advise !…………….that`s why at 60 I`m fitter than Arshavin ! ……….mind you, Geordie Armstrong is fitter than Arshavin from his grave……………….RIP Geordie !. 😀

Can anyone think of a Greatest Lazy Bastard Arsenal VI……………starting with Hands on Hips Arshavin. 🙂

  63. Le Coq Monster says:

So what you are saying Wath is that it`s probably easier to make an Arsenal VI of work horses !. 🙂

  64. Gd10 says:

We have a right mixed bag at arsenal

I’d say Ramsey, coq, bellerin, nacho, Alexis, Campbell, Chamberlain, el neny (from what ive seen) even ozil albeit doesnt really put his foot in really put a fair shift in.

Of course then you have your Walcott’s whos only decent asset is his pace and he rarely seems to run at anyone or make any off the ball and doesn’t really track back either.
Yet this twat is among our highest earners.

    New concept
    Contracts, paid per mile.

  65. Le Coq Monster says:

Agree there Gd10 and also on Theo……………..he is a lucky bastard, good looking, rich, doesn`t sweat and with pace to burn to get away from any girls boyfriends………the complete shagging machine !.

  66. Le Coq Monster says:

Oh and he`s an author of childrens books !…………….what cant that boy do……apart from dribble ?

  67. Le Coq Monster says:

I was thinking Rico and yes it hurts !………………….but when you think that we will have no Welbeck, Alexis, Ozil, Giroud, Ramsey, Koz and then there`s the historical possibility of injuries in pre-season……………what will our actual team look like for the season opener ?…………………..fcuking scary if you ask me !……………….like to try and predict a team ?

  68. Wath says:

Guarantee…………. I’d say it guarantee’s nothing Rico not the way our Arsene thinks and works..!

  69. rico says:

He can’t start the season with one experienced central defender Wath, surely? And Gabriel looks like rabbit in headlights having been coached by our lot..

  70. Hell Raising Devil says:

    Good Evening Lovelies and Hunkies.

Per is out folks. For 5 months. So in AFC terms that would be 9 months.

I hope he does not do as WATH said and buy a Silvestre.

We need a good one…..who hits the ground running.

At least that means that Chambers will not be sent on loan now.

We should thank God that the injury happened now…..and not on 2nd September.

  71. Wath says:

If i am honest Dev i have zero faith in Wenger to bring in the right player or players from now until the window ends…! I’d love to be proved wrong.

  72. tsgh says:

With Koscielny already out of Liverpool opener due to international exertions. First game not played in anger yet and we have a CB crisis

  73. tsgh says:

Bordeaux are playing hard ball with us on Debuchy…

The old lady must be certain Pogba will be sold to consider buying Higuain for best part of £79m

He has to show his hand now
if he wants to get someone in.

Why is it we cant make a bid for Stones
    yes..will be outbid..But
Let’s be fair we would all have bit more
    respect for him..wouldn’t we.

    Wenger likes one horse races
where he gets the poker playering
    rubbish from is beyond me.

As soon as the cat is out the bag
    wenger throws in the chips.

Lets hope the panic within him
    is a bit controlled..this time
The thing we don’t need is a ball-watcher
who couldn’t tackle a full English.

  76. rico says:

    Morning Fred and all..

Five months out for Merts is a big concern, nearly as big as five months with him in the defence….

Striker and CB please Arsene, and quality ones too!!

  77. allezkev says:

    Morning All

    Morning Rico

I don’t know why everybody is getting in a tizzy over BFG being out for 5 months, and it’ll probably be longer, we have Chambers and Holding, as well as Koscielny and Gabriel, so relax.

I’m very relaxed about it as it goes…

    Rico, any news on Stokes?

  78. allezkev says:

I wonder how Alexis and Ozil will react, after a summer of rumour, with Arsenal linked to Higuain, Icadi, Vardy, Mahrez etc, to end up watching Chuba Akpom leading our attack against Liverpool…?

  79. frednerk says:

    Hi Kev
If the BFG is anythink like he is
    on the pitch.
I can’t see him being a Quick Healer
    Can you..

  80. rico says:

Arsenal have held transfer talks with Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, according to the Daily Star.

The Gunners are believed to be in the market for a new centre-half with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny both set to miss the start of the season.

Arsenal are said to have held initial talks with the agent of Mustafi over the possibility of a summer move.

Reports also suggest that Arsenal remain keen on Inter Milan defender Jeison Murillo.

  81. allezkev says:

Hiya Fred, well he’s never been quick mate, but I’ve seen plenty of quick players at Arsenal, who’ve been useless…

It’ll be interesting to see how Chambers and Holding perform in the US, wasn’t they the England centre-backs when the U21’s won their recent tournament?

  82. allezkev says:

Ben Yidder, never heard of him till today Coach, but from what I’ve read the source is unreliable – yeah really… ?

Hard to believe ami, but there ya go, ?
