Lewandowski wants to get to Arsenal! Will Arsene have two reasons to celebrate tonight?

Morning all.

Mikel Arteta:

We have two very difficult games coming up against Dortmund. After that we will know exactly where we are in the group. They are a very good side and they are doing well in their own league.

Winning the first two games makes a difference and now we have a massive game at home. If we win that one we are almost there. I think this is going to be a crucial one.

We currently sit top of our table with just three points between us and both Dortmund and Marseille.

Arsene Wenger says that win this at we are nearly through to the knockout:

It’s not a decider but an important one. It’s an 80% game for the qualifying.

If we win the game, we know that if we win the other home game we are there.

A win tonight will see us push Dortmund further away from us and getting 9 points from our first three CL group matches would be fantastic, massive.

Mikel Arteta is right though, tonight we face the toughest opposition we have so far this season, and by miles. Ok, Napoli managed to beat them 2-1 but the Germans went down to ten men just before half-time. They also had their manager sent to the stands which probably didn’t help matters either.

We breezed past the Italians with great ease and were privileged to witness a first half display which surpassed any kind of football we have seen for many years and the second half, although very different, was calm, collected and very very professional.

We need that again tonight, start with pace and directness and be clinical in front of goal.

We’ll have to do it without Mathieu Flamini though, he’s been ruled out after suffering with concussion on Saturday. There’s a ‘5 day rule’ after such an injury and the doctors won’t allow him to play. Very sensible, not even a match like tonights is worth taking such a risk on a players health. Nothing is.

As said earlier, Dortmund have some fantastic players, Reus, Lewandowski, Aubameyang, Bender and some may be concerned over Sahin, but he was pretty average when he was at Liverpool.

Szczesny says that his good friend and Polish team-mate can’t wait to get to Arsenal tonight, but their friendship will go out the window for one night only.

But look at the players we have.

Aaron Ramsey, who can’t put a foot wrong in 2013, Mesut Ozil who was born to play in the Champions League, Olivier Giroud whose flicks are more precise than those in his hair, Bacary Sagna who looks to get younger each game, Per Mertesacker, Kieran Gibbs, Laurent Koscielny who together, look the most organised they ever have. Tomas Rosicky, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla… the list really is endless and those players have absolutely nothing to fear ahead of tonight, nothing!

Respect Dortmund but show no fear, start as they did against Napoli and give nothing away.

Most importantly, we have the home fans on our side and they count for a lot when in full voice and they need to be tonight.

From beginning to end, The Emirates has to be buzzing and the players, whoever get to play need to give them a lot to be buzzing about…

Finally, Happy Birthday to Arsene Wenger who is 64 years old today.

Let’s hope he has two reasons to celebrate tonight…

  3. bradster says:

    Morning all,

I would like to see how we come out for this one. I feel we need the experienced cool heads of Arteta and Rosicky in the pivots.
Try Gnabry on the left seeing that wilshere played well on the right in the last game. The rest pick themselves.

  4. Scott from Ozil says:

Just warming up for the game with the Batle of Britain.
Of course, i can not remember any Welsh aces in the movie, but let us hope the result is the same 🙂

  5. Tim says:

    Bring them on.

  6. AndrewH says:

Just don’t know what to expect! Our expectations have been raised but don’t want to tempt fate by expecting too much. Wont be overly disappointed with a draw and 7 points from 3 in this tough group. Win would be luvly though 😉

  12. rico says:

Thanks Ah. I don’t either, we are in great form, up against a very good Dortmund side, but who Klopp said was very tired at the weekend after their 1-0 victory…

Sure hope they are more than tired tonight…

Thanks again re the post guys..

I have changed it back Wavy. Re his contract, I read somewhere that AW said it can wait but he kind of knows what he’s going to do. My hunch is he’s keeping the players on their toes 😉

Seriously though, as Adam has said before, surely a player like Mesut Ozil would have wanted to know whether AW is staying or not before signing…

  13. bradster says:

Even though we seem to concede in almost every game, I’m much more confident in our defending.
Of cause that means we need at least 2 goals tonight.

  14. Iragaba Gilbert aka fatgun-uganda says:

    happy birthday to le’ prof.
    up gunners.
wil be posting under new name fatgun-uganda.
IG is often used to refer to some CEO who……….

    good day all!

  15. rico says:

🙂 Bradster, 2-1 would do me just fine. We just need to come out of the blocks all guns blazing like we did against Napoli..

Great shame Flamini isn’t playing though, think we’ll miss him tonight.

  16. Xr!s says:

With God on our side,we will win convincingly with no occurrence of injuries. That’s all we need to do for Wenger.

I think we might wait till the new year to know about his contract,Rico

  17. BrainwashedKev says:

    Morning All..,.

    Morning Rico, nice post Madam…

Yes, we will miss Flamini, that’s for sure, as Dortmund look very dangerous on the break, like ourselves…
I still recall our last meeting (2 seasons ago?) it was a fantastic, breathless game of attack and counter-attack… One of the best European games I’ve seen involving Arsenal.
Gotze was brilliant that night, before going off injured…

But we have one of the best teams in Europe atm, both in terms of technique and currant form…
    Arsenal to win 3-1

  18. angel may says:

heavenly father i just want to celebrate with a treble winning team this year….i know u only can make that happen.greetingz frm an angel….d epl or bpl is all ours….mwahahahaha

  19. potter says:

when the draw was made we looked at the other teams and said wow that’s hard. However when they looked at their groups and saw us they felt the same. Time tonight to stand up and believe , we might be worried about them but they sure as hell are worried about us.

  20. rico says:

    Morning Kev. Thank you..

I’m going for 2-0, with Ches on fire tonight…

Got to dash guys, back later this afternoon…

    Night Scott 😉

  21. Nashuagunner says:

    Good Afternoon Rico and All

Good Read and let us put the same performance we did with Napoli. We beat them before and now we have a better team than two seasons ago even though we sold the best CF and DM (RVP& Song) in Europe, we can still make it happen. They too have lost key players in their team (Gotz and Kagawa)

    http://youtu.be/fdC9Kj8iz3k

  22. potter says:

Nashua :- I can agree about RVP but I can’t let you get away with the Song comment. From where I stood at The Bowl I saw a man that gave away too many free kicks was slow tracking back , abandoned his back four whilst he ran forward to make a few marquee passes to Van Persie. I thought getting the money that we did for him was good business.

  23. Adam says:

Potter. I agree. That clip against the Germans last time out was one of the better things he did. He did give away far too many free kicked in dangerous areas too.
Wasn’t that goal we gave away typical too?

  24. Nashuagunner says:

Potter, I can’t disagree with you on Song’s giving away balls in dangerous areas, but he was one of the best defensive midfielders if not in Europe but the EPL. The main thing about Song, he was improving and could have been better as the days go by. There was no teamwork in covering for each others then as compare to now, where we have each others covering and working as a team. But as always, Song divide opinions.

  25. BrainwashedKev says:

    Hey Nasher, great vid, thanks….

My feelings on Song is this, we got a very good fee for him, and since he left I have never once felt that we missed him and don’t really want him back, despite the rumours…

  26. Nashuagunner says:

Adam, even PV4 abandoned his back four to score goals or to make needed passes that gave us goals but the difference then others were covering for him.

  27. Fatgun-Ug says:

game reading!! Song was so poor that his mistakes made the whole team look bad.
Merts is slow, makes runs forward once in a while but is disciplined enough to read the danger in time to position himself well enough. Song on the other hand, left our back four naked when it mattered most and tried to stop the damage by committing silly fouls in dangerous positions in an attempt to salvage the situation kozzer-style. we got the best deal for him…
what were they smoking over there at the camp nou?

  28. Adam says:

The rather unpleasant stench in the air is coming from the putrid re-writing of history rising from the pages of Ferguson’s book. The bits I have seen quoted are monumentally egotistical and dripping in self-righteousness. What a truly classless thing that man is.

  29. Adam says:

Potter. Me neither. I just read a few clips just now on the net.
It really is putrid. Pathetic really.
    Are you going tonight?

  30. BrainwashedKev says:

I was actually hoping that I could get Ferguson to autograph my copy…

I hold that Scottish wanker in the highest of regard…

I feel that he is a humble God fearing man, who helps old ladies across the road and makes sponge cakes for the local Hospice…

    He is very misunderstood…

Excuse me, I forgot to take my tablets today… 🙁

  31. Adam says:

There has been surprisingly little comment over Halsey’s disclosure that Ferguson would regularly texted him. Still, he accepted a holiday from Mourinho too and saw no harm in it.
I guess that onanists tend to stick together.

  32. ozgunner says:

right then off to bed for 3 hours then up for the big one – really looking forward to this sighter as to where we are – hopefully we turn up and turn it on!! See you at half time

  33. BrainwashedKev says:

Adam, the EPL is bent, we all know it, but it’s in the interests of the TV companies and media to cover it up….

For Arsenal to win anything is a minor miracle…

  34. Adam says:

I agree Kev. I am always surprised at how far people will go for money. Even multi-millionaires like Ferguson just cannot pass up the chance to earn more, regardless of who they may hurt or how many lies they have to tell in order to ruthlessly promote themselves and get a few extra quid. When I think of the way that he, in collusion with Riley cheated us and just about every other club in the past it makes me angry and the way the footballing powers and lily-live red journalists ignored it and let it happen is an enduring disgrace.
I think that the PL feels a lot cleaner without his malevolent influence though Mourinho is still an unpleasant stain and Riley still operates from behind a cloak of obscurity and secrecy.

  35. Joaquim Moreira says:

Flamini not playing tonight and the team organization is completely different Let’s see and wait
Hope we win. Come on Arsenal!

  36. potter says:

Even with the turbo charger and a couple of bovines pulling it ,it’s still bullocks Kev. I usually use the A11 / M11 but the road works at Elveden can add 1/2 to 3/4 hour to the journey down. So it’s about 2 1/2 hours to the parking spot and then a 2 mile walk in as Hackney council have got restrictions everywhere. Anyone would think they don’t want the extra income from tourists spent in their area.

  37. AndrewH says:

Evening rico. Got an ultrasound on my frozen shoulder at hospital 7.30pm! What a time, please don’t be running late. And I thought it was 8pm but its 7.45 eek.

  38. tsgh says:

    Evening all…
Good read and a happy birthday to the one and only AW.

Bvb has won 1 out of their 11 away games so unless AW messes up we have huge chance…
Who he plays on the rhs and in the deep role against Bender will be crucial… Klopp normally moves Sven further upfield to win the ball when they do not have the ball…
A test for Ramsey vs pierre Aug and Blas’ ski…

  39. rico says:

Adam, no doubt you are soon departing for The Emirates. Hope it’s a great game with a good home win..

    Back after dinner.

  40. ozgunner says:

one hour to go – come on lads. Agree tsgh, big chance tonight to make a statement against the finalists

  41. DutchGooner10 says:

    Hiya evening GoonerdomWorshippers,

My sincere apologies for Saturday Live Stream Service. My connection spiraled in total meltdown. Service will be restored tonight.

Just a glitch in the consistency you’ve come accustomed to here on Highbury House. No worries.

Rubbing my hands on tonight’s game.

  42. rico says:

    Team in full:

Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Ramsey, Arteta, Wilshere, Ozil, Rosicky, Giroud.

    Subs:

Fabianski, Vermaelen, Monreal, Cazorla, Bendtner, Jenkisnon, Gnabry.

    COYRRG’s

    Evening again….

  43. Micko says:

Surely not another one going over board about Flamini rico !

Rushing about like a mad man, just in time for the game.

    C’mon Arsenal.

  44. DutchGooner10 says:

Peeps there is server trouble at the live stream center. Solving the issue is pending as we speak. Be patience please.

  45. tsgh says:

    Typical
Shite set-up.serge should have started instead.less options when the pivots get the ball.
Second f up of the season…too cautious with this formation.
Ng, he did.klopp told AW to write to him…

  46. BrainwashedKev says:

Some of our passing looks nervous…

    Dortmund are playing very well.

    Arsenal are looking sluggish.

    Long way to go.

    COYFRRG

  47. Micko says:

Lewis, we have to string a few passes together first, our game has gone to pot.
Dortmund pressing the ball much much better.

  48. rico says:

Come on – simple football, play the simple ball, simple passing – Dortmund are closing us down too quickly…

  49. tsgh says:

    Dear oh dear…
    Will Maurenyo accept this?
You wouldnt think we are playing at home…maybe TR07 and jack should swap…

  50. rico says:

    Ng ??

I’d love to see him at Arsenal Kev, super player and Sahin is playing so much better than he did for the dippers…

  51. Scott from Ozil says:

Our donkey is turning into a handsome stallion 🙂
Who was the git that gave up the ball for the goal though…bloody welshman 🙂

  52. BrainwashedKev says:

Rico, tbh we could take 6 or 7 of their players and they’d be perfect for us…

We could be over critical, but Dortmund are a top top quality team…

But remember, they scored from a mistake, other than that Szczesny has had very little to deal with…

We’ve had one off of the line from Rosicky, a near penalty and a really English type goal…

  53. Scott from Ozil says:

Agreed Kev….the game is there to be won, i reckon.
Rico, i guess he had to stuff it to make us remember he is merely human 🙂

  54. DutchGooner10 says:

    Rico

Problem was after possession was lost defensively they were too eager to correct. Stepping into the threat over hastily.

Had they tracked the man on the ball it would’ve probably been blocked.

  55. tsgh says:

Scott, you know he has a goal in him.lol
Klopp will now try to expose our rhs in the 2nd half I am certain…
We are fortunate Reus is tucking in field otherwise, we could have been under more pressure.
    Come on gggg’s

  56. DutchGooner10 says:

Notice how Dortmund receive, touch once and pass crispy. Nice to see such meticulous retention and ball distribution. Seamlessly I might add.

Break up the receivers Gunners! Don’t chase the man on the ball.

  57. tsgh says:

All of a sudden Ozil in the game…
Strange or just some tactical awareness after sub…
    They dont even have Gundagun…
    Rico Ermirates?

  58. BrainwashedKev says:

I’ll tell ya what, that Lewandowski is a flippin’ hard bastard…

He’d be perfect in the EPL…

    Really hope we get him…

  59. tsgh says:

Lewis, to meet Arteta is world class.its a shame some fans never took to a player who took a pay cut to join us but warm to flamini so easily even though none of his stats tacking success etc compare to Arteta…
As I mentioned earlier only Arteta won 6/6 tackles across the whole europe.
Flamini’s highest tackle in a match is 4…

  60. Micko says:

    Sucker punch Kev.

Now lost 2 games this season and flamini didn’t play in either, oops there’s me going over board now.

  61. tsgh says:

Its simple tactical games drop JW.
Its no coincidence Ozil plays better without jw…
Nothing again jack but he needs to work on his positioning.

  62. GunnerDNA says:

How can an AFC 11 taken the field against 1 of the top teams in the Europe without SC19 in the starting line up?

  63. Joaquim Moreira says:

three teams with 6 points but we had two games home. Now, we have two games away and Napoles and BD have two games home

  64. DutchGooner10 says:

Consistency is the hallmark of true champions. We lacked the extra bit of pace, assertion and creativity today. At this level these things get to small margins to determine a winner.

Bring back their scalp I say to put it right on the return match.

  65. Lewis says:

Only a handful of players were at it tonight, Giroud, arteta, Kos and rosicky. The rest were poor. You cant turn up against a team like dortmund with half the team playing shite. You get mugged, as Kev put it!

  66. DutchGooner10 says:

Look peeps I’m not in the CL for a pack of crisps and a can of soda.

Better to have a reality check now than going to the quarters-,semi- or final on complacency.

  67. Nashuagunner says:

Borussia Durtmund were determined and played like their lives depend on this game. Arsenal, not so such what’s to make of it. They played us on high field, make us work to get into their half of the pitch. Most of the time BS had no help on the wing and when he got caught up-field there was no one to mark or challenge RL on the second goal.

  68. BrainwashedKev says:

I make you right Dutch, it’s disappointing, but the EPL is my priority…

A reality check to our players who may have started to believe all the hype.

Like you Dutch, I kinda think we can win in Dortmund, whilst we’d have a great record in Italy…

  69. BrainwashedKev says:

Dortmund got lucky tonight, fair play, maybe next time it’ll be our turn?

This Group will go to the last game for sure…

Flamini and Cazorla for Wilshere and Ramsey in the return and we’ll be ok…

Gotta say that Bendtner looks like a New Age Traveller with his daft hairstyle…

  70. GunnerDNA says:

We need a better/mobile player than MA08 in the middle of the park, AW made a mistake and left SC19 on the bench, there is no way Barca is going to leave Messi on the bench. AW SC19 is a first choice once fit…..

  71. tsgh says:

I am very disappointed with AW today.Even I suspect Blas’ki will start on their the to track back.we were out thought all over the pitch because the side is unbalanced.if only santi and Serge had come on earlier.

Interesting comment about our goals conceded.its a worry IMHO;my question is always that if flamini balanced us that well how have weconceded more goals this time round compared to this time last year when we had played shitty, chavs and Liverpool?

  72. Nashuagunner says:

Do we honestly believe that This BD team is better than the one we beat in The Ems?? Or the previous Arsenal team is better than this Arsenal team that beat or draw with them in Germany, don’t forget that Santo played???

  73. tsgh says:

Note bvb has beaten Bayern this season 😉
DNA,I disagree about Arteta.he was our best player today…
Jack should not have started IMHO…

Even Serge would have offered a better tactical balance.

TR07 and Ozil improved instantaneously JW went off imo…

  74. AndrewH says:

Can’t remember ever agreeing with Roy Keane before, but if we didn’t qualify we would have a better chance domestically. We don’t have the quality of squad to beat the Madrids, Barcas, and win the EPL. Just trying to find some comfort from tonight!

  75. GunnerDNA says:

Flamini might not be good in possession, but every time he wins the ball he is plays it forward at 1 of the attacker feet, MA08 dwells on the ball and allow the opposition to get a better shape defensively, MA08 should come on when we are leading. i’m not even upset because BVB is better than all teams in the PL.

  76. Nashuagunner says:

This is a wake up call. We’ll go back to the drawing board and try too figure out where we went wrong. No more complacency.

  77. tsgh says:

That team is better individually but this batch are more experienced I think…
That team were 2 time bundesliga champions too…

  78. GunnerDNA says:

It is not about what Arteta does, ii that it’s all he can do, he didn’t make a mistake because he never let himself get close enough to really be seen as at fault, BVD simply passed him by and he was left chasing shadows trying to make up ground, and the worrying thing is he’s not going to get much better, he shouldn’t be a starter in such a big tournament.

  79. BrainwashedKev says:

Maybe Gnabry will get his chance at the Palace this weekend?
Freshening things up with a bit of pace and trickery on the flanks.

Wilshere looks to be out for a week or so, we need a couple of the injured players returning, in fact, I wonder if Walcott and Podolski will be available for the return in Getmany?

  80. tsgh says:

    You are being serious Dna?
    Rosicky a sub at best?
I am not going to get into a debate but I am not sure how Arteta has played less games this season but has made more successful tackles than flamini

dont get me wrong I agree Arteta is slow but so is Pirlo,Busquet and Carrick..

  81. BrainwashedKev says:

To me, both Rosicky and Arteta were two of our best players on the night…

I’m not gonna slit my wrist over this result, we got mugged, it happens in European football, it’s the nature of the beast. We’ll hopefully learn from this and next time settle for the draw if we can’t win it…

  82. BrainwashedKev says:

Have to say that BFG had another impressive game tonight, never mind Flamini, I’d shit myself if he got injured…

  83. BrainwashedKev says:

We need experience in Europe Ginge, how far away is Walcott?

Akpom in the League Cup, Miyaichi I like, but he ain’t ready for Europe either, Gnabry is good from the bench, I would have liked to have seen him come on sooner. Two minutes from the end is a waste of time IMHO.

  84. Nashuagunner says:

T’s, I don’t know about tactics and all but this Arsenal team suppose to beat BD today. Today it seems BD wanted this game more than us. And they have a plan; hold us up in our half.

TR07 is one of the matchmakers in today’s match. He tried to open up their m-field every chance he get and take it to their defence.

  85. tsgh says:

    Offer• even
I agree, its good to get back to the drawing board again.
Ramsey became a player being a box to box maestro after the break I think he has become too attack minded.
Bender after being dropped early season is back to his best…
Bvb’s captain kehl is not even getting games.

  86. tsgh says:

    I agree Kev,
This is one reason why I want a Reus or Muriel instead of an out and out striker.
when Serge did not start last weekend i was king him to start tonight.
I have nothing against jack but i think he needs to sit out a game or 2 and watch how games develop.

What do you think of Olsson and Nici getting a run in the CoC?

  87. Scott from Ozil says:

Honestly, i couldn’t care that we lost that.
Brings us back down to earth, and it is ten times better losing that than a PL game.
This weekend, we need to redeem ourselves.
We were beaten by a very, very good side.
The ref…well, he did not cost us the game, but damn, he was shit.
Sme of the frees he gave against us were very soft while he seemed to miss a few.
That is a sideline to the result though.
    Our boys were flat.

  88. potter says:

1 – 1 with 8 minutes left still topping the group and we let it slip. We are not pragmatic enough , chasing two more points, getting too far forward in too many numbers . We get caught on a breakaway. Naivety ? You bet.

  89. potter says:

Worrying isn’t it that they can look tired and leggy so early in the season. It’s going to take a monumental effort to stay in the hunt until the new year. I fear a spate of fatigue injuries around Christmas time.

  90. Scott from Ozil says:

I will alter my comment….i don’t care about the result, but the way we lost was, as Potter said, naive at best.
Why chase a goalwhen leading the group?
Why give 3 points when 1 was a decent return?

  91. tsgh says:

I agree a bit of naivety and poor judgement from AW.playing your best team in the CL hardly gets result.Mauren and Rednose always played their most efficient team.

The reason Fletcher was always played by Rednose in Europe and Torres started ahead of Eto.
Even Klopp dropped his best player Pierre Aug because he can’t defend.before the game I talked about our rhs.
Its a shame we lost the game without BVB trying at all and with the manager in the stands…

  92. BrainwashedKev says:

Still cannot believe how we lost that game last night…

Two moments of slack defending and we lost…

Should have won that game 3-1, but that’s European football for ya, one moment you seem in complete control, the next you concede.

No doubt those mugs in the Press will have a field day, telling us that we failed our first big test….
    Really?!!!
