Jorginho is better than no one, right?

Morning all.

Jorginho has landed at Arsenal on an 18 month deal. He followed Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior through the door, not literally of course and whilst Arsenal handing Chelsea £12 million to take a player who was clearly deemed surplus to their requirements, doesn’t shout ‘ambition’ now he’s wearing the Arsenal colours, I hope he proves to be smart purchase.

If he’s the player to bring calm, experience and confidence to the team when we’re hanging on to a 1-0 lead at The Etihad, Anfield, St James Park and Goodison Park etc and succeeds, it’ll be £12 million well spent. Jorginho joins a list of Chelsea players who’ve crossed west London for north. David Luiz, Willian, Gallas, Yossi Benayoun, Petr Cech and Lassana Diarra. None were a great success. We’re due a change in fortune so hopefully Jorginho will be different and he’s left his pipe and slippers in the Chelsea dressing room.

I’m very excited for this new challenge, and I just can’t wait to be on the pitch to be honest! Everything has happened so fast. I was a bit surprised, but I took the opportunity of this amazing challenge. It’s an important shirt. It’s an amazing club, a big one, and I’m really excited and happy to be here.

I’ll try to just bring positive energy, hard work and my experience to help the team. It’s what I always bring with me. I try just to help with the experience I’ve had in my time with the other clubs and anything I can do just to help the team to achieve more and more, that’s my target. All I can promise is that I’m going to give my all to represent this club.

Thinking about this move logically, perhaps the arrival of Jorginho isn’t as bad as it first seemed, especially if one takes Chelsea out of the equation. Is another youngster what we need really for the next five months? If the answer is yes, then perhaps Arsenal could have recalled Charlie Patino, or just stuck with Sambi Lokonga but instead, Mikel Arteta has gone for experience, just as he’s done with Leandro Trossard instead of Mydryk.

We want to win the League so isn’t better to have a player who knows what it’s like to achieve that than a younger player who might not even fit?

Many of us have often said that new signings need to be made early so they can have a good pre-season, well in January, they don’t get such a luxury. They simply have to hit the ground running and in my opinion, there’s more chance of Jorginho doing that than a player coming from another League. Admittedly, Caicedo might have been more appealing but clearly, Brighton weren’t prepared to sell him. Let’s not forget, they are in a good position in the League and have a good chance of securing European football for next season.

I think the club have had a really good transfer window and the squad is definitely stronger than it was on the 31st of December. Whether it’s strong enough to win the League, or Europa Cup is something only time will prove. But, if Thomas Partey does breakdown for any reason, I think I’d rather see Jorginho on the pitch than the struggling Sambi Lokonga.

That’s my best attempt to put a positive spin on our deadline day signing…..

A comparison focusing on 22/23 only would probably be more meaningful, to check if Jorginho is actually ageing or not, to see better Partey’s contribution in the current system of Artetaball at its best, and to be fair to Caicedo who was an unknown teenager at the beginning of the 21/22 season.

Good morning Rico, I don’t think there is a need to put a spin on our January transfer dealings. Yes there is a feeling of disappointment that a deal for our primary target, Caicedo, proved to be a step too far. However, on reflection I think the signing of Jorginho may well turn out to be a good bit of business, particularly as we get to the later stages of title chase, his experience and professionalism will outweigh the youth and energy of Caicedo.

With our two other signings, Trossard and Kiwior bulking up our squad I reckon the Edu/Arteta partnership has done pretty well and, what’s more, they have mortgaged our future like that clown at Chelsea.

All in all, we have a stronger and more experienced squad.

Hello HHers. While younger Caicero was ideal, let us appreciate the role of an experienced and balanced head around our very young squad. Granit anyone? We have focused a lot on Partey getting injured and forgotten what of Xhaka is injured/ suspended? This is far better than 15mil spent on Joao Felix for 6months loan. Did I forget what a stinker he had for a first game? Up gunners

Not sure that better than no-one is the best greeting but obviously he is not first choice , we know it and he knows it . He has been given a lease of life because Boehly was about to break the bank again to sign Fernandez and he was told that he was dropping down Potter’s starting or even playing list.
We set our stall out for a player to give us cover for the possibility of a Partey injury our first choice for whatever reason did not come . It is quite smart of the player to say that his club would not sell him as it hikes his price for the summer and leaves the door open for a bidding war in a few months time .
We however needed something now and we have got an Italian international on a limited contract whilst we can cast around for a player to purchase or buy time to allow Patino to mature a little bit longer and come in during what could prove to be an even more busy season next time.
Chelsea supporters are saying that getting shot of him is great because they are dazzled by Boehly’s check book and that they have a new shiny toy to look at. However their need is different to ours .
Taking into account what we need Jorginho is probably as good as we were going to get on a short term contract ,his experience will be a great asset when the Europa comes round . Sometimes a grateful reserve is better than a new club record superstar that expects to start more often than not.

    Mornin All

We needed cover for Partey. We now have that.

I think the couple of displays from Sambi in the FA Cup convinced Mik that he wasn’t able to fill the same role. In fact he looked well off the pace. I can’t see him at the Club much longer.

Having watched Jorginho a number of times I worry that he’s slow, and can be pressured into mistakes. But he’s clearly better than Sambi.

PS: Chelsea can stick their money where the sun don’t shine. Something mighty fishy going on down there.

Morning Rico, a well balanced post lacking in some of more ‘the end of the world is nigh’ rhetoric I’ve seen across multiple blogs over the last 24 hours. Arsenal made two bids this window for close to club record fees for two players, we were played by Shakhtar and we respected Brighton’s wishes, hopefully they’ll reciprocate that respect next summer, lets see?

Arsenal have behaved like a proper football club this summer and pretty much like everyone else barring that despicable mob in Fulham Road and we’ve come out of the window with all the positions we needed strengthening strengthened and if that causes you to meltdown as I’ve seen on other blogs then the problem is probably more at home than at Arsenal.

Who knows what the next few months will bring and whether the business we’ve done in January will make any difference or not, but I’m sure as hell going to enjoy the rest of this season whatever the consequences we face, but if some fans can’t then maybe it’s a bigger problem than simply football..?

I am of the opinion that even buying one Caicedo or Mydrick, wouldn’t have guaranteed our winning the League this season. The same applies to the current 3 new signings. I think it’s fair to say that the club’s hierarchy has tried their best to strengthen in key areas. I am personally content with the job job Arteta/Edu Gasper have done in this transfer window, quite smart signings.

    Tongue in cheek Potter. Lol

    Morning Kev.

I just see Jorginho as being an experienced player who Arteta clearly thinks can do a job for us and as others have said already, he’s a squad player and not first choice. If his attitude is right, we might get to the end of the season and think the £12 million spent was more than worth it.

He is slow, but perhaps his steadiness will prove to be what’s needed. It’s the fact that we’ve paid Chelsea for him which annoys me most.

    Afternoon Rico and all.
Pbarany if I read it right according to the Premier League Site, Jorginho states show:
    season 20/21 games 28 goals 7 assist 1 fouls 32 yellow cards 2 tackle won 53%
    season 21/22 games 29 goals 6 assists 2 fouls 30 yellow cards 5 tackles won 52%
    season 22/23 games 18 goals 2 assists 0 fouls 12 yellow cards 4 tackles won 55%

  10. potter says:

What we have paid Chelsea is a mere bagatelle in comparison to what they have spent and if the authorities were serious about FFP , it would hardly pay for the stamps for the letters to the legal team. Win the league and get Champions league and it pales into insignificance .
Kev is right , Chelsea are becoming pariahs in the national game , their actions since Abramhovic wiped their debts and have fuelled the inflation that every other club has to pay for any player they try to buy. We have been known as treasure island for a long time but now every agent knows that to squeeze the last iota out of a buying club , all he has to do is bring Chelsea into the equation.
For years they have been a club with no standards worth speaking about and their self discipline has spawned such paragons of virtue as Mutu, Terry and Cundy ,not to mention Mourinho and his many outbursts and his laundry basket
. I see Mudryk is now getting the clubs guidance and has posted a video of himself singing a rap song using the N word .
    They will never change.
    .

    Afternoon Geoff.

Totally agree with the points about Chelsea. How can it be deemed right that in less than a year they’ve spent nearly £600m on players.

  12. Aussie Geoff says:

All that money and they still haven’t won that much.
From what I have seen of Kiwior, I am looking forward to see how he does under Arteta.
Good luck to all our young players who have gone out on loan.

Saudi’s money has spoken, and FIFI has taken it and run.
Ex Socceroo’s player Craig foster has blasted FIFA, after they have allowed Saudi Arabia to advertise at the women’s world cup.
