Joachim Low the leading candidate to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal…

With Arsenal stuck in what is looking increasingly like a lost season, manager Arsene Wenger may finally be out the door. The most successful manager in the history of the club has been much maligned in recent years, and the Gunners’ disappointing 2017-18 campaign is looking like it could be his last. Wenger’s contract with the club runs into the summer of 2019, after he signed an extension having Arsenal toppled Chelsea in last year’s FA Cup final.

Arsenal had lost four straight matches in all competitions until Thursdays defeat of AC Milan. Two of those defeats came at the hands of Manchester City, one of which was in the Carabao Cup Final. The losing run in the Premier League has a good chance of coming to an end this weekend against middling Watford, but wagering on the Gunners to win at this point in the season would be a fools errand. Avoid that sucker bet at all costs.

Obviously, a club like Arsenal won’t settle for an also-ran replacement when it comes to replacing Wenger and reports suggest the Gunners are setting their sights high. ESPN FC believe that Germany manager Joachim Low has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Wenger at the Emirates. Although they ESPN cite Low as being the favourite, current Celtic and former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and Monaco head man Leonardo Jardim are also names being taken into consideration.

Low’s contract with Germany runs through the Euro 2020 tournament. He remains committed to the German side through this summer’s World Cup, though he would reportedly consider a move to the club once the tournament has concluded. Low has been in charge of the German national team since taking over for Jurgen Klinsmann in 2006. He came up as an assistant under Klinsmann and has proceeded to help turn the side back into arguably the world’s best. Germany won the 2014 World Cup and 2017 Confederations Cup under his watch. But he hasn’t managed a club since Austria Vienna, where his tenure ran from 2003-2004 which could be a sticking point. Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis is expected to oversee the coaching search if Wenger does leave after the season.

It is believed that some of the club’s more established players no longer believe Wenger is the man to lead the side forward, so a change at the top will be necessary. ESPN cited a source that said, “A lot of the players don’t want Wenger. They are not happy with his tactics and the training.” Certain players are reported to be upset that Arsenal sold Alexis Sanchez to rival Manchester United during the January transfer window.

Players come and go though, that’s football. What our current players need to do is focus on their own game and their team-mates. Get on with what they’re paid to do because maybe quite soon, they’ll be trying to prove to a new manager that they’re worth keeping and right now, there’s a big question mark hanging over a few….

Heard that Low is just a smokescreen – am hoping so as I don’t think he is up to the task of full on Premier league management. Jardim all day long for me.

  2. Goonster says:

Still think we ‘ll be rid of Wenger this season ma’am??? Alright we ‘ll see. Anyway back to yesterday’s post I love the look of AMN God we could have a beast of a player on our hands if he gets the right coaching. The way he wins the ball off the opposition without fouling them reminds me of maldini plus the kid really can play. His ball retention skills is better than anyone on our payroll bar santi. Watching him win the ball and gliding forward is such a joy to behold. My chav mates all say glowing reviews about him. There’s a player there just hope he won’t get wengerized like all before him. Morning Rico and all.

    Morning all
My name is not there? How is it possible?
Low maybe good, but be a coach of a national team during many years it’s not very fortunate.
Training a club is very different from coaching a national team. In all aspects.

  4. Begeegs says:

Please God – no Low! When was the last time that someone made the successful jump from international management to club management?

    Jardim please

  5. Begeegs says:

Goonster – Sacchi was unsuccessful coming back to club management (Parma). Del Bosque made the jump from club to International. Lippi went from international mgmt to club management in China. Aragones went to Fenerbache, finished 4th, and was sacked. I’d say that Advocaat has a rather journeyman-look to club management. Van Gaal was similar. He won the Bundesliga with Bayern one season and that was it. Rijkaard did well at Barcelona, but after that faded. Koeman has a career similar to Advocaat.

So out of that bunch – Rijkaard probably was the best with Barcelona. The rest more or less underline my point which was who made a successful jump from international management to club management. I guess I should qualify that with success meaning major honours at the club level, not finishing 3rd with AZ, for example. 🙂

If you look at Lows club managerial career……actually don’t 🙂

  6. Goonster says:

Just screwing with you begeegs of course I don’t want loew he’s been away from the rigors of club football and would flop big time. I ‘ll rather take a punt on a young upcoming manager. Someone who can rival pep and maybe give him a run for his money. I like jardim a lot if we get him I ‘ll be stoked but I think Germany is the hotspot for emerging world class managers. Hassenhuttl, nagelsmann, tuchel etc. I ‘ll even take sarri over jardim but then again Wenger ‘ll still be here till 2021 So why get my hopes up.

  7. potter says:

Wenger for life! ? Seems that way , I just can’t see him letting go and I can’t see Kroenke senior doing the deed.

  8. Joaquim Moreira says:

Aragones RIP. A Dutch coach? whre is Holland now? ? where are Dutch teams? They were outdone!
Jardim is a good choice. But first, Joaquim Moreira

  9. Wavy says:

    Afternoon all.
Sadly I can’t see us finishing second now. If manure win today I think we can resign ourselves to finishing 6th or 7th!
I said the other day that I thought they would carry Wenger out of the Emirates wearing a wooden box, circa 2026 or even, 2030. By which time of course we’ll be playing League 2 however, the attendances will still be verified at 56,500 despite having closed the north and the south banks!

    Wenger for life, literally.

Woe is me! In fact thrice woe!

    Raining here, again.

  10. Obi says:

Two names for me: Maurizio Sarri of Napoli, a master tactician and motivator and Massimiliano Allegri of Juventus master tactician and superb in-game manager. Both an upgrade than our current manager

  11. BT62 Gooner says:

    Just checked Wavy…

Fergie 71 and 26 seasons at Manure..

AW 68 and 21/22 seasons at Arsenal.

I think we may have to endure a few more seasons…

    I hope i’m wrong, in fact i think i’ll take up praying…lol

  12. BT62 Gooner says:

Apparently when Arsenal post their final financial figures for the year, it’s predicted there could be a loss of around £54m..

  13. Wavy says:

    Irony Rico.

Presumably we’ve got another 4 years and a day to endure! Oh joy!

A 54m loss? I suppose that’s the missing CL money. The cash that we wouldn’t miss.

The club just goes from bad to worse. Quelle surprise!

  14. potter says:

Cech, Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Holding, Kolasinac, Xhaka, Elneny, Iwobi, Ozil, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang

Subs: Ospina, Chambers, Willock, Nelson, Nketiah, Wilshere, Welbeck

  15. Wavy says:

Thank god for Iwobi! We must be going for a high scoring or goalless draw!
    Still we’ll see.

    Afternoon all

Au a just missed 1 on 1. Still we’ll see!!!!!!!

  16. Goonster says:

God what does nketiah have to do to get a game. I ‘ll bet he’s 10 times the player iwobi is.

  17. Adam says:

Rico. I can’t work it out. What’s he supposed to be doing out there?
    Second half hat trick perhaps.

  18. Goonster says:

We ‘re all over the place since the 33rd minute. Get off your arse arsene and switch it up. Take off both xhaka and iwobi. They te running through us with ease. Jesus Christ in heaven. Anyone can see we ‘re barely hanging on.

  19. potter says:

Basic win if you stand up to Watford’s niggles and shoving they colapse. Bought time he stood up for a penalty

  20. Goonster says:

Elneny by a long shot is my man of the match. He was imperious in the middle. Started all our attacks and sprayed some delicious passes forward. Emphasis on the word forward here. Great game wish we can do this for 37 of 39 games a season but that’s Wenger’s arsenal. One week we ‘re shit the next we ‘re barca at their prime.

  21. Meerkat says:

Two good wins like these will signal to Kroenke and his band of merry old men, that all’s well. That it was a mere hiccup.
If we trounce Milan at home, that will further convince them.
Us fans are in between a rock and a hard place, of course we want the team to win, but when they do, those hammered in nails in AWs coffin, will be yanked back out,

  22. Meerkat says:

Right now. Hypothetically speaking, if we were to go unbeaten for the remainder of the season, how could Stan the man even consider sacking AW. It would be unheard of wouldn’t it?
I agree with Goonster that Wenger is Teflon coated and could avoid it again.
He’s got his shirt and trousers on at the moment, whatever that frickin means.

  23. Wavy says:

Nah, he only has his shirt half buttoned up! (Keown on MOTD)

Got to keep the faith………..his trousers may yet disintegrate. Here’s hoping.

  24. Lee says:

Dublin,Teflon Wenger at his best… that coupled with a favourable draw in the EL paving his way to the final where we snatch a victory!! It’s written in the stars I tell you….
