Ivan Gazidis confirms transfer plans, or rather lack of them. Season finally kicks off with a trip to France.

Morning all.

The pre-season finally kicks off today with a friendly against Lens in France. A few players are missing like Ozil, Koscielny, Alexis, Xhaka, Cech and Bellerin but the rest should be ready for tough fixture in the heat. Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Matt Macey, Krystian Bielik, Reiss Nelson, Marcus McGuane, Ben Sheaf, Julio Pleguezuelo, Stephy Mavididi, Chris Willock and Gedion Zelalem all trained with the first team yesterday according to Jeorge Bird.

The match kicks off a 7pm Uk time and the Arsenal Player are showing it for free if anyone is interested.

Pre-season should be interesting with players like Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gnabry, Chambers all hoping to prove they have have a future at Arsenal but with three of them being English and one who I believe is classed as home-grown, I doubt Arsene Wenger plans to offload any, other than a loan perhaps for Gnabry and Chambers. Then of course there are the youngsters, all who will be hoping that it’s their time but further loan spells could be in store for a few. Out of all the younger players involved in training, perhaps Krystian Bielik and Jeff Reine-Adelaide have the best chance to make the step up. I thought Jon Toral would too, but he’s already gone out on loan. The rest are all still very young. Bielik may just turn out to be Wenger’s plan in central defence after the young defensive midfielder has been playing in that position for the under 21’s and let’s be honest, our central midfield defensively, is looking pretty darn strong.

I haven’t seen any pictures of Santi Cazorla back in training which is odd as he hasn’t been involved in any international competitions over the summer. Perhaps he’s still sunning himself on a beach somewhere, perhaps he’s injured, or perhaps he’s off. I sure hope it’s not the latter.

Elneny

I love this guy, I really do. He plays with a smile on his face and he’s darn good. For just £5 million, he was a real steal. I reckon he’s going to have a great season and just get better and better.

As much as many Arsenal fans would like to see big money spent on big players, it seems it’s just not going to happen as in an exclusive interview with ESPN FC, which is worth reading, Ivan Gazidis has made it quite clear that spending big money isn’t key to achieving success:

“The big clubs can’t financially bully the smaller clubs in the way they used to, so I think a lot of the differentiators between clubs become more subtle now.

“It’s how well you can identify talent. It’s how well you can develop talent. It’s how strong your club philosophy is. It’s how together you are as a football club, what your support services are like in the medical field, fitness, analytics, psychology. All of these things become differentiators.”

Has Arsene Wenger been truly successful in identifying and developing talent over the last 6/8 years? I’d say no, not really, in fact not at all as it wasn’t until Debuchy suffered injury did Bellerin get his chance. Francis Coquelin was on his way out of club just before injury to others saved his Arsenal career and other than Alex Iwobi last season, who has come through the youth scheme and made a real impact on the first team? Answers on a postcard please.

But funny enough, I kind of agree with what Gazidis is saying, spending huge amounts of money doesn’t mean success is guaranteed but when a team has a manager and a team around him who are unable to spot the talent in a way Leicester did, then spending more money on individual players is the only way the squad will improve.

Mind you, I’d be happy with 2/3 more like Mohammed Elneny, and if they only cost the club £5 million each then so be it…

I’m off to get my tin hat….

    Morning Rico…

    Morning One and All…

It’s difficult to get too enthused about comments from within the club at this stage of the season, most of it is either PR or some kind of misinformation whilst transfer discussions are on going…

I didn’t pay much attention to the Icardi rumours, maybe his wife, if she ever did visit London, was on a shopping trip?

What I’d like to know is, why has it taken a week to sort out Holdings contract..?

These transfers just drag on and on and on and on and by the time they’re concluded, any excitement you may have had, will have turned to boredom…

Interested to see how Jeff Reine-Adelaide performs this evening.

  2. Wath says:

Kev, the problem is as Adam alluded to “why” do the hierarchy even feel the need to comment on such things..?

It serves no purpose what so ever apart from annoying the fans and making out yet again that we are paupers..!

Stop moaning and making excuses about the money in the game and other “rich” clubs and get on with your jobs and strengthen the bloody team, not difficult is it.

Maybe Wengers now wrapped Ivan round his little finger…!?!?!?

  3. Malaga gooner says:

    Morning all

What gets me, is the club think we’re stupid

Do they really think we believe the shit they come out with.

There was not one mention of life without Wenger

He’s going to sign a new contract

  4. americangunnerfan says:

Gazidis isn’t going to tell Arsenal fans why the club is reluctant to spend money this off-season, but I will: the key to player signings in all professional sports today is how much money the owner of the club will have to pay up-front in order to get the deal done–an owner who is dealing with a cash-flow problem in his finances either can’t or will be unwilling to lay out a lot of up-front money to consummate a deal, while one who has a lot of liquid cash (money) available will be in a much better position to get it done–and, right now, Arsenal’s owner, Stan Kroenke, is in a position where he has just had to pay out a big bonus to sign the Colorado Avalanche’s best young player and is in the process of not only building an expensive new stadium for his NFL football team in Los Angeles, but also having to pay the other clubs in that league a multi-million dollar “relocation fee” in order to be allowed to move the Rams from St. Louis to L.A. Kroenke is a multi-billionaire, but even a multi-billionaire can find himself in a position where, for a time, his cash reserves are severely depleted because there is significantly more money going out than coming in and it may be difficult for him to convert any of his assets into cash without taking an unacceptably large loss in the process.

While Arsenal fans might point to the club’s significant financial surplus and ask why Kroenke’s personal finances should have any impact on the club’s ability to buy players, but not understand that part of the surplus may have been set aside to provide the club with sufficient cash-flow to cover expenses before its coffers begin to be filled by its primary receipts. In that situation, the club might be in a situation where it would have to turn to the primary owner to provide it with the up-front money needed to consummate a big-money transfer deal (such as the amounts being demanded for a top striker), but Kroenke is not in a position to provide the up-front cash needed to tide the club over until its coffers can be refilled. The club might have the cash on hand to get 20- or 30-million pound deal done without having to turn to Kroenke to help with the up-front money required by the deal, but it might not have enough cash on hand to consummate a 50- or 60-million pound deal without Kroenke having to kick in money–money that he might not have on hand at the moment–to cover the up-front money needed to get it done.

If that’s the case, Gazidis isn’t going to say so. Instead, he can be expected to make the kind of BS statement that he just made. The fact that he just did make that statement (combined with the news of the signing of the hockey player) is a pretty good indication that the real issue is that Kroenke isn’t in a position to help the club make the kind of big-money signing that Arsenal fans have been calling for and expecting.

  5. Malaga gooner says:

    Americangunner

If we don’t take into account the clubs cash surplus, we still have the new TVs money, which is worth 100 million, plus the 60 million we get from the Emirates and puma every year.

    Money is not an issue

We have a manager that’s not willing to spend the going rate on world class players

  6. Wath says:

Amercangunner, I hear what your saying and yes technically your correct “but” we are not talking of Krunkies individual money here we are talking about finances that are on the books of Arsenal Football Club… “IF” for any reason those finances have been used as security or collateral for any separate financial package outside of the modus operandi of AFC then the board and the hierarchy are in dereliction of their duties as they should not be allowing a majority shareholder to use the Clubs finances to broker other such deals. I cannot see that this would be allowed to happen either under UK financial laws but i could be very wrong. His buyout although with funds from Deutche Bank wasn’t the same as the Glazers where they used the clubs as security to borrow against… Then again did he and we are not aware that’s what happened.

  7. Federico says:

I’d think that if Arsenal were used as collateral that would need to be used in the public accounts.

  8. allezkev says:

Just so we’re clear about this, let me quote from Swiss Ramble’s examination of Arsenal’s finances from February of this year:

Everything else being equal, Arsenal’s cash balance will again be significantly higher when the next set of annual accounts is released. Depending on when transfer fee stage payments come due, it should be around the £225-250 million level. Arsenal have more cash than any other club in world football….

    From Arseblog….

  9. allezkev says:

So is Stan dipping his sticky fingers into the Arsenal pie?

Is this an example of what we’ve always suspected..?

Stan certainly doesn’t have cash flow problems when he’s living out his fantasies and purchasing another cattle ranch…

  10. Malaga gooner says:

3 weeks tomorrow the season starts and we still don’t have a forward and a CB

This is just typical of Wenger

I’m waiting for the usual shit, that we tried but couldn’t find anyone of special quality

  11. Gd10 says:

Were going to finish 7th at highest this season.

Hope what’s left of the akbs finally wake up (you just know they were remain voters in referendum) and finally hound Wenger and gazidis out of this club

At this point fuck Wenger and his legacy. He s about to destroy the coast thread of it.

  12. arsenal11730 says:

    Good day Rico and Gang.
I found this closing comment re the Holding announcement on AFC website intriguing: Never saw this before. Seems we are in final stages of closing a striker deal…..

We remain in the market, so stay close to Arsenal.com for any further transfer news.

Maybe Mario Gomez as a punt………..

  13. Wath says:

What pisses me off on dotcom is they state “versatile England Under 21 international” why don’t they say centre half who can also play anywhere in defence… is this another Wenger square peg round hole experiment…??? Think after Chambers he’d of learnt a lesson, lets hope so for all concerned.

  14. arsenal11730 says:

HRD – You are right Mate. Same old nonsense different Summer as a Gooner.

I believe AW understands if we start poorly, and no striker signing, the fans vitriol will be excessive.

It could be untenable for him to finish season.

With Pep, Kloop, JM, Conte and Poch competition is fierce – Will be fascinating season.

I do agree with Gazidis comments that the playing field has narrowed between the big 4 and the other 10 teams in PL. Now they all have dough for big wages.

My gut is telling me a striker is coming.

Expect TW14 to have a good season 15 goals 10 assists. Ego was severely bruised by the Euro 2016 snub.

Losing DW23 was harsh and fell for the lad.

Onwards and Upwards – Come on You Reds. We bleed red, being Gooner tough gig. With Our dictator at the helm.

    Cheers Mates and Lassies

  15. Hell Raising Devil says:

I do not mind if we do not get a striker provided the attacking department gets these goals…..Ollie 16, Alexis 15, Theo 15, Ozil 8, Aaron 8, Iwobi 5….any other who plays there 5. That makes a total of 72 goals.

    Then I expect the midfield to get these……Xhaka 2, Coquelin 2, Jack 2, Coquelin 1, Cazorla 5

That makes a total of 12

    And the defence…..Bellerin 2, Per 2, Kos 3, NAcho 1. That makes a total of 8.

    Overall total 92

And don’t tell me I am not realistic. Because they are realistic targets for each player.

Last year was not Ollie’s fault. He got his quota.

The fault lay with Ozil, Aaron., Alexis, Cazorla, Coquelin and throughout the squad. Had these players contributed we will be singing a different song

  16. allezkev says:

Cheers Coach, I’m quite pleased about that signing, not seen Holding play but I’ve heard and read some good things about him…

It might be too late for Lens, but I guess he’ll be going with the squad to the USA

  17. Marshall says:

Money is not an issue imo. The club has a bucket load if it in the bank. We are just cheap!

I get your arguement HRD but in a system where we don’t shoot I don’t see the midfield esp Ramsey and Ozil coming up with the goals.

15 goals for Feo. I give him 7 at most.

  18. Wath says:

Having seen the comments by Wenger as to why he let Hayden leave it beggars belief that “Wenger” never game him a chance yet I click on the AFC squad and I see the name Sanogo there….! Enough said.

  19. Hell Raising Devil says:

put it another way……..I expect 16 goals from the CF position. 15 goals each from the lateral strike positions whoever gets to play there. 8 goals from each of the AM positions (Aaron and Ozil or whoever gets the nod.

its irrelevant whether Theo or Iwobi gets them however I feel that based on wages and experience its logical that I expect Theo to be that man. That is why I would have loved Mhitaryan or Draxler or Mahrez or Payet. They would have got between 12 and 15.

  20. Wath says:

Devil, If Theo stays fit and that’s a very very big if… You’d expect him to be scoring at least 10 league goals as a bare minimum, the fact that we all look at him and we’re saying he won’t score 5 is indicative of the problem we have up front. For all his faults Giroud is consistent in scoring us 15/20 a season across the board, the problem is no support. I think Alexis is wasted out wide and have said all along he should be through the middle but our style dictates otherwise so how do we solve the scoring conundrum…? As pointed out we try the walk the bloody ball into the net so shooting is out of the question so how else…? Giroud isn’t going to score 30/35 a season the way we play in a month of Sundays…. I don’t see where there is a solution as it currently stands.

  21. Hell Raising Devil says:

I agree Wath. As I said…the problem does not lie with Ollie but on those behind him namely…Alexis, Ozil, Aaron, Theo or whoever plays behind him….Iwobi, Campbell, Ox etc.

  22. kc says:

Interestingly, in the website statement, Arsenal say ‘We remain in the market, so stay close to Arsenal.com for any further transfer news.

  23. Obi says:

AmericanGunner that assessment is well and good but NHL salaries must come from NHL revenue generating activities and NFL stadium finances are pre approved, so Stan need to show the cash sources. But never mind all that, Arsenal was the top earner in EPL last season all cash. As a matter of fact it has been on the top 4 EPL earners for over 10 years in a row; so it’s not a money problem.

  24. Rick says:

    Afternoon Rico and the House
Cook 100 not out 29th test hundred. Lets hope the other batsman don’t let him down

  25. Dean Williams says:

Arsenal11730 TW14 should be sold. He was snubed by England because he’s just not good enough… We’ve been waiting a long time for him to do something but never has!

  26. Rick says:

Rico , Arsene said he left Isaac leave .so he could continue to progress and not risk standing still.

However I have seen an Hayden interview which I do not like one little bit.
In it he stated I just had to get away from there. I will quote more later when I have found my tin hat.

  27. Adam says:

Vince has no solidity to his game Kev. I am not sure that he can make the step up to test level where you don’t get bowled half volleys every other ball. Question marks over Ballance, Hales and Moeen too I would say.

  28. rico says:

Can’t wait too see those big fat cheeks chomping on a few Wrigleys Adam…

Super batting from Cook and Root…

Hales test career must be hanging in the balance too. Great one day player but struggles in the test…

  29. frednerk says:

    The England selection committee
must have been looking around a
    wood-yard.
    Steve(Fat) Bruce or Fat Sam?

Who do you think can carry the
    most Timber.

    Great adverts for healthy eating.

  30. Wavy says:

We’ve only had two half decent England managers since Sir Alf, imo, being Sir Bobby and the FA sacked him before the World Cup started! They were anticipating abject failure and they got to the semis. The other was Terry (I’m a geezer) Venables he did well whist he was in charge euro 96? I think. Tall the rest were carp! Yes, carp! All a bit fishy! Well so was el Tel! But he was a good coach.
Allardyce? Have had no time for him since he walked out on Notts County, leaving them in the crap! Nah, he’s a Brummy lump and that largely says it all! Sorry don’t mean to be regionalist, but we all have our opinions!

Hayden obviously was ill treated at Arsenal! As are many of our trainees. All told they’re brilliant then they’re loaned out, then they come back and are left out, as all and sundry have forgotten who they are and then they are sold!

  31. Wavy says:

I suspect he doesn’t know where his off stump is! And has a tendency to chase down the wrong line! Will he improve, probably not, so England career is likely to be toast by the end of this test. Imo, of course!

  32. frednerk says:

Not sure how we got Holding
    for only 2.5mil.
    Wenger told the bar-codes
    Issac was worth 5mil
Puzzled no other clubs made a bid
    for Holding.
The way he played for Bolton at
the end games and the England
    games were quiet good.

    Has anybody heard the rumour
Chambers is going on loan to
    Watford?

  33. Hell Raising Devil says:

I don’t agree regarding Sam Allardyce.

Yes his football at club level bordered on the brute force…..but don’t you think that the English primadonna selection needed a dose of that????

Remember when in 2003 we lost the league at Bolton and Fat Sam was in charge??? if he can replicate that type of solidity not only at qualifier level but also during the proper tournament.

Hodgson and other coaches were softies and I believe that the players ruled. I don’t think that will be the case with Fat Sam. He will soon put the primadonnas in their place if they don’t pull their weight.

I believe that you may be surprised…..maybe football at the helm of the English team is made for him.

I may be mistaken……but who knows

  34. allezkev says:

Yeah, Vince has the shots Adam, but I wonder if he has the mentality, a bit like Graeme Hick…

Rico, Compton got dropped for a lot less, but I like Hales, I think we’ve gotta stay patient with him…

Have we actually got any other openers of international quality who could come in…

Personally I’d prefer Root back at 4 and an opener at 3…

England should put on 500/550, but I fear that we’ll collapse when Root goes…

Bairstow and Stokes could be interesting…

  35. allezkev says:

Fred, could be that there’s add-ons on both Hayden and Holdings transfers, I heard we got £2.5m for Hayden, I guess it could raise to £5m and maybe we have a sell-on clause?

  36. rico says:

Yes Fred, I saw that rumour about Chambers. Could be good for him. Looks like Holding will get the nod ahead of him…

  37. Hell Raising Devil says:

Not much to shout about. Players need to up their level.

The game is a preseason one….however, the attack leaves a lot to be desired.

chambers did himself no favours with that mistake.

  38. rico says:

I’ve given up watching…. Not a good first half at all but then it’s only about getting match fit with half a squad…. Lol

    Night guys…

  39. Hell Raising Devil says:

I expected better from NAcho and Per when Chambers went to head the ball. Both of them stayed flat when infact they should have been covering him at an angle. Yes it was Chambers who made the mistake but for 2 other defenders to neglect their duties in covering does not bode well.

    Morning all.

  43. allezkev says:

    Morning One and All

Morning Rico, come on, up you get, those chickens need sorting out… ?

I know it’s very early in pre-season and Lens are further down the line in preparations as they start their campaign next weekend, but you gotta be worried by how ineffective, so I’ve heard, was both Akpom and Walcott. Especially as our problem is up front and the opportunity to stake a claim is there if any player has the gumption to grab it…

  44. allezkev says:

Interesting to read that Debuchy had quite a good game, got stuck in and earned himself our first yellow card of 2016/17…

Was he trying that extra-hard to oust Bellerin or to earn himself a transfer, my guess is the latter.
I also read that Zelalem had a good game…

Chambers made a mistake for the Lens goal, but I’ve read that he had a good game other than that one error.
    Poor decision making? Bad luck?
Whatever the reason, I would not let him leave permanently, but as many on here have suggested, a seasons loan, at another EPL club could be the making of the lad.
Some guys can come into a team and perform straight off, others need a run of games but then once into their stride are consistent…
Maybe he is one of them?

  45. rico says:

Both were pretty average from what I saw Kev, Debuchy looked decent….

Agree on Chambers, send him on loan to play every week, even it’s just until Christmas…

  46. potter says:

Nice goal from the Ox but Theo looked just the same as last year, can’t take corners or cross on the run but it’s early days and the whole thing was pretty lacklustre. Gibbs however looked really good but Chambers needs different coaching this any port in a storm policy really doesn’t do him any favours. Now we are off to America to raise Stan’s profile ,who knows what will happen ? more of the same probably until the big names reappear and then last season’s deficiencies will rear up again.

  47. allezkev says:

With Gabriel, BFG and Koz, you can’t see Chambers getting much game time, so Holding can slip into his spot as No.4 centre-back and Chambers can go and get the regular games he needs at this stage of his career Rico…

I can’t see Arsenal signing another defender tbh, if there is to be another signing then it’s gotta be up front, that’s the overriding problem that I can see in this squad…

  48. Adam says:

Morning Rico and all. I watched the first half of the game but it was terribly tedious so I didn’t bother with the second. However I saw enough of Theo to last me a while yet. He really needs to go and be replaced with someone who actually looks like he has the will and the quality to attack the opposition instead of looking like he really didn’t want the ball. There are plenty of candidates or perhaps even the Ox could step into that role with a bit of coaching? Carasco looks like he could do a job for us though I have no idea of his contract situation at Athletico.

  49. rico says:

I always thought he should have gone out on loan last season, seemed crazy that Chambers was just left to rot in training when he could have been learning how to be a solid centre-back somewhere else. I can’t stand Pulis or Big Sam, but I bet either of those two would have got more from him…

Kev, but how good is Holding? I’ve no idea and as I’ve never seen him play. The right thing to do would be to sign an experienced and bloody good central defender and send both Holding and Chambers on loan, especially if Debuchy stays..

Let them improve and gain experience and then next season, we may just have two really solid defenders to replace Merts…

  50. scottfromoz says:

Chambers needs game time….give him a loan spell then make a call.
Try Ox at striker and make a call on him, as well.
He can finish and he does take defenders on, so why not?
No point keeping him in limbo.
Theo will never be any better than he has been for the last 5 years, so cash in and buy a top grade striker.

  51. scottfromoz says:

    Interesting point/theory…..from a mate.
Ivan has just told the world to stop upping the price of players, as we aren’t in the market……..maybe a smart tactic.
    Maybe 🙂

  52. Adam says:

Rico. I have watched him and haven’t seen any potential that suggests he is anything special. His lack of game time tends to confirm this. I just do not see Arsenal as a club for him myself. Mind you, I thought the same about Theo after a couple of seasons at the club. 🙂

  53. Malaga gooner says:

    Morning Rico and the house

We need to have a clear out. Walcott , AOC, jenjinson and chambers, are not and will never be quality players.

This latest squad that Wenger has built is just not good enough
